The goal of the program is to develop a dust collector system mounted on a ranging drum or arm shearer which will: 1) reduce the respirable dust level of the shearer operator by at least 75 percent; 2) be easily and economically mounted on an existing shearer; and 3) will not, through modifications to the shearer, reduce its safety or productive capability. The development program consists of three phases covering the activities of the design of the dust collector system, fabricating and installing it on the ranging arm or drum shearer, and conducting underground field tests on the modified mining machine.

Disasters are often tragic outcomes of high-risk technologies such as mines. In Australia, more mines are being developed every day, and the risk of disasters is ever increasing. No matter how effective our conventional safety devices are, there is a form of accident that is inevitable. These relate to accidents that result from æinteracting failuresÆ in a way that could not be foreseen by the designers. In so-called ætightly coupled production systemsÆ (processes that happen very fast, such as on a high producing mine) the risk is even higher and our risk controls mostly introduce some sort of a technological fix. While we are at the one hand attempting to control the risk, we are also introducing another level of complexity. Are we really controlling the risk? This is one of the fundamental questions that will be addressed in this paper: Do we have the ability within the mining industry and other industries to effectively prevent these catastrophes, or are we, on the contrary, faced with an increasing risk as a result of increasing complexities of our technology, management systems and practices. This paper will contend that perceived improvement in risk control is an illusion of activity, and that the likelihood of mining catastrophes may be exponentially increasing. Although the paper focuses on the mining sector many aspects may be applicable across a range of industries. This paper will further contend that we are applying the right solutions to the wrong problems. Our focus is technological and procedural, while our problem is one of production cultures ripe for error and failure.

A Discrete element computer program named DMC @istinct Motion Code) has been developed for modeling rock blasting. This program employs explicit time integration and uses spherical or cylindrical elements which are represented as circles in 2-D. DMC calculations have been compared with measurements on bench blasts in the field with relatively good comparison. Structural rock mass characteristics have a significant impact on any blast and DMC has not, until now, included these effects. This paper discusses a recently added DMC capability for treating joints and bedding planes in bench blast simulations.

"INTRODUCTION By far the greater part of the high-grade manganese ore used in the United States is imported from overseas. During the early part of the recent World War importations of manganese ore were seriously threated, and it appeared that it would be necessary to utilize low-grade domestic ores to the fullest possible extent. Among the processes that appeared to offer the best possibilities for beneficating low-grade domestic oxide manganese ores, which ordinarily are net readily amenable concentration by ore-dressing methods, were those involving leaching with sulfur dioxide. The Bureau of Mines therefore investigated the amenability of a large number of such ores to sulfur dioxide leaching.Several sulfur dioxide processes for beneficiating low-grade oxide manganese ores have been proposed. 3/ One of these, based on a patent by Van Arsdale and Maier, 4/ was used recently in a plant constructed to treat 1,000 tons per day of 20-percent manganese ore from the Three Kids deposit near Las Vegas, Nev. 5/ In this process the ore slurry is leached with sulfur dioxide gas, the resulting solution is evaporated to crystallize the manganese sulfate, the crystals are decomposed thermally to produce high-grade manganese oxide and regenerate sulfur dioxide, and the manganese oxide product is nodulized. The Bureau of Mines has recently developed a process 6/ in which a suspension of the ore in calcium dithionate solution is leached with dilute S02 gas, the manganese is recovered from the resulting solution by a simple lime precipitation, and the precipitate is nodulized or sintered to form a high-grade manga¬nese oxide product."

Phelps Dodge Mining’s Bagdad, AZ copper facility uses a large series of cone crushers and ball mills to reduce copper ore to very fine particles. The solids are mixed with water to create a slurry. Milk of lime is added to this slurry to raise the pH. Small amounts of reagents are also added, including a frother to make bubbles, as well as a collector chemical that causes the copper minerals to stick to those bubbles. This material is pumped to a series of froth flotation cells to concentrate the copper. Air is blown into the flotation cell tank and the pulp mixture is vigorously agitated. Rising bubbles carry the copper particles over the edge of the flotation tank. The bubbles break after they flow over the edge.

North American railroad locomotive operators (engineers and conductors) are exposed to multi-axis vibration and shocks (1, 2). A recent epidemiological survey showed a prevalence of serious type of neck and lower back disorders nearly double that of a control group (3). Ergonomic working conditions are important co-factors in a vibration and shock exposure risk assessment (4, 5). The goal of this study is to illustrate typical work stations (cabs and seats) in US/Canadian type locomotives and assess shock related exposure risk by calculations of the new proposed shock risk indicators according to the new ISO 2631-5 (2004) (6). Methods Locomotive cab and seat inspections were conducted and operators’ activities were assessed by a trained observer. Field measurements (n=50) were obtained during normal revue service following generally accepted guidelines (ISO 2631 (1)). A sub-sample of n=20 locomotives were selected for the calculation of proposed shock indicators (ISO 2631 (5)). Results There has been little change in basic locomotive cab and seat design in the U.S.. Two locomotive cab design concepts are used: the Association of American Railroad (AAR) Control Stand and in newer series wide-body locomotives the “Control Consol” (Figures 1-2), with varying seating conditions, but frequently subjecting the operator to an awkward body posture in addition to the vibration and shock exposure. Without an adequate data sample there can be no Reliability Analysis (RA). Without analysis there can be no systematic, verifiable improvement in reliability or in operational economy. A sample is a collection of life cycles. A beginning and ending event define a failure mode life cycle. Well known obstacles impede the reliability engineer in his role to analyze maintenance data. The main problem lies in the difficulty to obtain analyzable data samples. Although modern Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMSs) should provide the needed information they rarely deliver samples of adequate quality. Cerrejon, an integrated mining operation in Colombia, South America solved the information management problem by applying a "Living Reliability Centered Maintenance (LRCM)" process to its fleets of Trucks, Graders, Dozers, Loaders, and Shovels. This paper describes a method wherein completed work orders capture reliability analysis enabling information. The 'right' maintenance observations reference significant failure modes. Work orders link to records in a continuously growing Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) structured knowledge base. Grouped and filtered knowledge-to-work order links, being instances of failure modes, provide the samples required by reliability analysis software tools and methods. LRCM software and related procedures facilitate the growth of knowledge, manage the work order-to-RCM relationship, and generate samples for subsequent reliability analysis.

With a price slowly rising above US$35 per ounce gold became a mineral worthy of prospecting and mining endeavour in the early to mid 1970s. Fortune therefore appeared to smile onNew Zealand with its favourable geological environment for gold and past record of major gold production from both hard rock and placer deposits. This was a particularly welcome development as the post war years, including both the base metal exploration boom of 1967/1971 (which produced major nickel, iron and bauxite mines in Australia) and the earlier period of uranium exploration failed to produce any mines in New Zealand with the exception of the small Tui Mine and iron sand mining. Whilst hard rock mining now appears imminent it is 15 years further along the track since the 1967/1971 exploration boom and eight years since the upsurge in prospecting for gold in 1978. New Zealand still has no hard rock base or precious metal mining. This is not for want of proven or potential gold mining situations for these clearly exist at Waihi, Monowai Reef, Golden Cross, MacRaes Flat and elsewhere.

Slags have been produced as by-products from pyrometallurgical processes for thousands of years, and have generally been regarded as waste. Many of these slags are no longer seen as residues merely to be discarded, but as potential economic sources of metals, or as useful by-products in their own right. Slag cleaning can enhance the recovery of valuable metals in existing pyrometallurgical processes, or can produce economic value from recycling old slag dumps. For example, a process has been developed and implemented industrially for recovering cobalt from copper smelting slag in a DC arc furnace. The relatively non-leachable behaviour of glassy slags allows them to be used as a very safe means of disposal of metallurgical waste streams, including many that are classified as hazardous. The high temperatures, reducing conditions, and good mixing that can be achieved in a DC arc furnace enable the effective functioning of this environmentally beneficial means of disposal. Lead blast furnace slag can be rendered safe for disposal by treating it using the Enviroplas process, which strips most of the hazardous lead from the slag (and traps the rest in an insoluble glassy slag) and recovers economic quantities of zinc by absorbing (in a lead splash condenser)the zinc vapour that is fumed off in the furnace. Another example can be seen in the recovery of a chromium- and nickel-containing alloy from stainless steel plant dust, while producing a disposable residual slag. The examples presented here illustrate that it is possible to develop processes that are both economic and environmentally beneficial. Deep sewer tunnels are required to meet future growth demands of the City of Austin?s down-town redevelopment. The tunnel is 18,000 ft long and varies in finished diameter from 54 inches to 96 inches. The tunnel crosses under Austin?s Town Lake three times and there are four main work shaft sites. Geology, groundwater, foundations, downtown redevelopment, and an active, healthy community put significant constraints on the design. This paper discusses a major underground project for downtown Austin and discusses the risk considerations and the opportunities the design team took toward optimizing the project design for the construction phase.

Distribution of minor elements in sandstone-type uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau is being studied by the USGS on behalf of the A EC. A primary objective has been to provide basic data which could be useful in geo-chemical exploration for new deposits. The basic statistical measures — similar to those used in sedimentary petrology—are described. The underlying principle is that the frequency distributions fit or approach the log-normal form. Since 1952 the U. S. Geological Survey on behalf of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission has conducted a study of the distribution of minor elements in sands tone-type uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau. A primary objective in this study has been to provide basic data which could be useful in geo-chemical exploration for new deposits. Among the basic data considered important are estimates of the abundance and habit of each element in the ore and in the host rocks. It has been found that a few basic statistical techniques, and variations of these techniques, are useful in this type of study. Some of the basic techniques have been used to advantage by researchers in geochemistry and in other fields of geology, especially sedimentary petrology; others have been used to only a limited extent. Among the latter is the linear correlation coefficient, which has proved useful in assessing the element associations in a particular rock type without analysing individual mineral separates. In computing the basic statistical measures a scale has been used which is, in some ways, similar to the phi ($) scale used by sedimentary petrol-ogists in grain-size studies.' FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS It has been recognized for some time that the results of analyses for a given minor element in a suite of samples of rocks or ores yield frequency distribution curves which are approximately normal when the curves are plotted on logarithmic or geometric scales. In other words, the analytical results give an approximate lognormal frequency distribution. A classical example is given by D. G. Krige2 in the study of the distribution of gold values from a mine on the Witwatersrand. Another example is shown in Fig. 1, the distribution of barium concentrations in samples of uranium ore from the Chinle formation. The geochemical data are analogous to grain-size data gathered by the sedimentary petrologist. Both types of data, after simple logarithmic transformations, may be treated by conventional statistical methods based on the normal distribution. This is not to say that other types of transformations may not serve equally well or better for particular element distributions.3 Spectrographers and other analysts are quite aware of the dependence of their precision on the concentration of the element present.4 For example, in the part per million range the variation may

While some countries in the Andean region have resorted to outright or creeping expropriation of natural resource contracts under the guise of resource nationalism, others such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), have claimed international best practice in the review (and setting aside) of important concession contracts.

The Bureau of Mines receives frequent requests for information on the treatment of mercury ores, but as its own and almost all other publications on mercury are out of print, the Bureau has prepared this circular on the metal for the prospector and operator of small mines and plants. Mercury, commonly though improperly termed ?quicksilver?, is the only common metal that is liquid at ordinary temperatures. Mercury is used in the amalgamation of gold and silver, in power boilers, explosives, friction-less bearings, laboratory apparatus, lamps, medicine, paint, rectifiers, and for ?silvering.? The last mentioned is being superseded by silvering with silver. The use of mercury boilers may increase when they are thoroughly understood, but amalgamation is -being replaced to some extent by the use of corduroy and other collecting mediums, such as jigs and flotation cells.

"INTRODUCTION Wright Engineers Limited is active and has extensive experience in the design of pressure oxidation plants for the treatment of refractory gold ore and concentrate. In addition to the Mercur oxidation facility, similar projects undertaken during the last few years include the 3000 ton per day acid oxidation plant for the Getchell Mine, Nevada, a concentrate treatment autoclave for Asamera in 1984 and a feasibility study of a 50-tons per day autoclave plant for Consolidated Professor's Duport property in Ontario. The Equity Silver antimony and arsenic precipitation autoclaves, and the low pressure autoclaves at Key Lake Uranium in Northern Saskatchewan were also engineered by Wright in recent years.In August 1986, Wright was retained by Barrick Resources (U.S.A.) Inc. to add a 750 tpd pressure oxidation circuit to the existing mill at their Mercur Gold Mine, Utah. This paper describes this facility and outlines the start up in the spring of 1988 and subsequent successful operation. MERCUR OPERATION The Barrick Mercur Gold Mine is located at the south end of the Oquirrh Mountains in Tooele County, Utah. The carbon-in-leach (CIL) process plant camnenced operation in 1983 with a design throughput of 3000 tpd and has since been expanded to handle rrore than 5000 tpd. 'IWo ore types are mined, an oxide ore and a refractory ore, which is by Barrick's definition ""an ore from which less than 60% gold extraction is achieved by a standard CIL amenability test."" Typical of many sulphidic/carbonaceous ores, the refractory gold does not respond well to the cyanidation process. As a result, refractory ore has been stockpiled since the start of mining. As of June 1987, Mercur had about 570,000 tons of refractory ore stockpiled and 5.7 million tons of proven and probable reserves, grading 0.06 oz/t including approximately 3.5 million tons of tailings from the previous operation grading 0.55 oz/t. In 1986, Barrick decided to build a 750 ton per day pressure oxidation plant to process these ores. The process, for which a patent was granted, comprises pressure oxidation of the sulphides in an alkaline environment. It was developed in 1981 but was set aside in preference of a CIL plant treating only oxide ores by the previous owner of the property, Getty Oil. This process is capable of increasing gold recovery from the refractory ore from as low as 35% by conventional CIL processing to more than 85%. In 1986 Wright Engineers was engaged to undertake a feasibility study based on batch testing. This lead to a decision by Barrick Mercur later that year to build the commercial pressure oxidation plant. Wright was awarded the contract for engineering, procurement, construction managernent and commissioning in March 1987. The plant was mechanically complete in January 28, 1988, and was in operation by February 1988."

While Russia continues to be a worldwide leader in asbestos production, the environmental and health status around Russian asbestos mines is not well known and understood, internationally. A literature review was performed to evaluate the potential impact of Russian mining operations on mesothelioma incidence rates in the Ural region where the majority of the asbestos deposits are located. Asbestos that has been mined in this region includes chrysotile, crocidolite, and anthophyllite forms. The Nicholson-Peto (1986) model was applied to published exposure data and mesothelioma mortality statistics in different cities and villages of the Ural region to estimate mesothelioma potency factors (KM) for the various associated fiber types. It was demonstrated that mesothelioma potency factors, as determined by Berman and Crump (2008), could be used to predict mesothelioma risks of non-occupationally exposed individuals in locations where either pure chrysotile, or both crocidolite and chrysotile, are mined and milled. A mesothelioma potency factor was calculated for anthophyllite that appeared to be higher than expected based on previously published studies. The highest incidence of mesothelioma was identified in a community close to a crocidolite mine. The study confirms the validity of utilizing current risk models for non-occupationally exposed populations near asbestos mining activities where asbestos exposures are relatively low and provides methods of characterizing mesothelioma risk in the former Soviet republics (FSRs).

This paper addresses the challenges experienced by the designer and three government agencies during implementation of major improvements for the Turkey Creek Tunnel in Kansas City, Kansas. The tunnel serves as a vital stormwater conveyance system for upstream flood control. Major structural deficiencies were identified within the tunnel including complete loss of sidewall and invert. Without immediate attention, complete loss of the tunnel arch could lead to blockage and extensive remedial repairs under difficult conditions. Considering that tunnel flows must be maintained during construction, a phased design and construction process has been implemented to expedite stabilization of the erosion cavities followed by tunnel liner repairs.

The prospect of utilisation of phosphate ores which contain high P2O5 values associated with Al and Fe has produced a great deal of interest over many years. Processing options have generally been based on the utilisation of by-products which were required to offset the processing costs.   This paper presents a range of processing options which have been investigated at laboratory or technical scale on phosphate ores which predominantly consist of crandallite, CaAl3(PO4)2(OH)5.3H2O and millisite, Ca(NaK)Al6(PO4)4(OH)9.3H2O. Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) and Mt Weld (Western Australia) phosphate ores are good examples of such feedstocks. It is expected that these processes may also be applicable to such phosphate ores from other locations.

The only significant iron ore deposit in Hungary could be found in Rudabánya. The mine was closed in 1986. The area of Rudabánya was always the home of heavy mining activity. In former times, mainly silver and other non -ferrous metals were excavated.
