Mining project feasibility is projected from a geological model and a mining plan. Ore grade is assumed to be continuous, based on drill hole assays as much as 80 m apart. Eighty meter is 80,000,000 micron. Base metal concentrators may be said to work at 80 micron, for flotation at least. In short, metallurgical and financial performance in green field metal mining is forecast on rejecting waste after comminuting the ore down by roughly a volume factor of 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 (1018) from the feasibility/banking study parameters. This is the gap between mine and mill, between present sulphide mining practices and mineral dressing capabilities, and ultimately between lenders/shareholders expectations and mine/mill performance. By inserting a new upgrading technology in this gap, new opportunities for reserve enhancement and cost reduction are created, and risk could be reduced. Blast holes for extracting the outlined ore might be 8 m apart. Most ore bodies do not abruptly change composition at 8 m intervals; nor are they homogeneous in grade at the 8 cm (3?) rock size, optimum size for sorting. Mining in 8 m blocks will inevitably cause dilution of the mill feed and ore losses in the waste rock. This is well recognized in the mining industry. Much work is going on applying the vast data storage and manipulation capability of computers to mine scheduling. One only has to consult the SME Annual Meeting presentations. At the 2007 Meeting, Clark and Dagdelen described the challenges faced by Newmont at its operations and the application of sophisticated software tools and methods in its search of solutions to mining optimization. Block models can often contain in excess of one million blocks. Additional complexity exists when multiple grades are modeled for each block. The authors identify the main optimization problem as the system?s ability to cater to large scale problems in an acceptable timeframe; in other words, still larger computers are needed. At the same Meeting, Menabde et al (2007) presented a new pit development planning tool called Blasor, developed by BHP Billiton Technology, and its co-developed Blasor IPD (In Pit Dumping), (Zuckerberg et al (2007)). For purposes of this paper, Blasor/IPD incorporates options on processing capacity constraints and blending targets, eliminating arbitrary up-front decisions about cutoff grades for each block of material in the extraction sequence.

A longwall mining operation went under a tall, self-supporting and free-standing wireless communication transmission tower. In anticipation of that the ground subsidence process might affect the transmission tower, the mining company took a proactive approach to mitigate the expected subsidence influences. The efforts include prediction of surface subsidence process at the location of the tower, assessment of stability, structural integrity and functionality of the tower structures, and design and implementation of mitigation measures. The intension of this paper is to demonstrate the techniques that can be used to assess and mitigate the subsidence effects on tall self-supporting and free standing tower structures.

Based on the geological-geometric characterization of the basaltic rock at the site of a factory for chemical products situated in the Southern region of Brasil, and on results of a significant number of packer tests, the principal directions of flow were estimated, taking into consideration the intersection and the orientation of the joints and the amount of contaminant flow measured in each interval. The tests were performed using the multi-packer hydraulic multitest probe of IPT (HMTP) instrumented with an electric conductivity meter. A method of analysis for three-dimensional evaluation of the amount of contaminant flow in the area was proposed for future mitigation of the problem. Basé sur une caractérization géologique-géotechnique de la roche basaltique existant sur un site dune fabrique de produits chimiques située au sud du Brésil et sur les resultants dún nombre significantif déssais du type packer, les directions principales d´écoulement ont été estimées en considerant l´intersection et orientation des joints et la quantité de contaminant mesurée sur chaque intervale d´essais. Ceux-ci ont été realizes en utilisant une sonde multipacker developée au IPT – São Paulo (HMTP) instrumentée avec un mesureur de condictivité électrique. Une méthode d´analyse 3-D pour l´évaluation du transport du contaminant sur ce site a été proposée pour une future mitigation du problème. Auf Grund der geologischen Struktur des Basalts auf dem Gelände einer chemischen Fabrik in Südbrasilien und der Ergebnisse einer ansehnlichen Zahl von Pumpversuchen wurden die Hauptfließrichtungen bestimmt unter Berücksichtigung des Kluftgefüges und der in jedem Intervall gemessenen Menge kontaminierten Wassers. Die Versuche erfolgten mit dem im IPT entwickelten Verfahren (HMTP) mit Mehrfachpackern und elektrischen Leitfähigkeitsgebern. Ein analytisches Verfahren zur dreidimensionalen Ermittlung der Mengen kontaminierten Wassers wurde für die künftige Befassung mit dem Problem entwickelt.

With the advent of the resources boom in the late 1960s most of the larger scale resources projects in Australasia were commissioned on an æowner miningÆ basis, where the mine owners owned and operated the primary mining equipment. Then, in the 1980s with the arrival of the gold mining boom in Western Australia and elsewhere, a change occurred û most of the mining activities were carried out on a contract mining basis. Over recent years, however, there has been a marked trend amongst larger Australasian open pit mining operations back towards owner-controlled and operated mining operations. The reasons for this are many and are addressed in the paper, but centre on the concept of the owner being prepared to assume more of the mining risk in exchange for the advantage of not having to pay a contractorÆs profit margin. Where mining contracts are entered into, the older æschedule of ratesÆ format is being replaced with less adversarial and more entrepreneurial contract alternatives involving operating cost and risk sharing in a spirit of æfair dealingÆ. Leasing and maintenance issues have also been influenced in recent years by the advent of more flexible contract arrangements with equipment suppliers. Group purchasing has also had some influence for project operators. For many mine owners, the optimal risk management profile involves a practical offsetting of the assumption of mining risk on the one hand, against the removal of litigation risk and potentially reduced operating costs on the other. Potential pitfalls may arise where equipment size and type requirements vary with time or where manpower management, mining flexibility, job skills or safety exposure factors are relevant. These issues are commented on in the context of some well known examples, and an update is provided on contract mining versus owner operation in large scale Australasian open pit mining generally.

"The concrete overbreak estimation for bored piles provides the quantification of the shaft’s expansion beyond its theoretical volume. There are stability analysis methods that can be employed before and after concrete pour but as for the moment of decision, during pile cast, the most common method still consists in measuring the rising of the concrete level in order to compare its poured volume with the theoretical pile section volume. This is a determinant parameter to monitor, not only because it assesses the bored shaft stability but also because it represents a direct cost. When analyzing the estimation methods commonly applied on-site it becomes evident that these are often affected by human errors that lead to misleading results. The objective of this paper is to identify those errors and discuss a subject which is usually overlooked. As a general conclusion, it was ascertained that most errors derive from inaccurate volumetric data, working procedures and gauging equipment. By acknowledging these widespread practices deep foundations contractors will be in a better position to make informed decisions on how to correct and improve bored pile stability.GENERALBackgroundWhen executing bored piles, the estimation of its concrete overbreak allows a swift appraisal of the excavation stability during the drilling process. This is simply obtained from the proportion of the poured volume of concrete over the drilled shaft theoretical volume, as shown in equation [1].Where CO = concrete overbreak percentage, Vc = volume of poured concrete, Vr = pile’s theoretical volume. This calculation not only provides a general idea of the shaft’s expansion from its theoretical volume, but also the outline of the excavated column’s geometry. For the latter, the outline will be as accurate as the number of measurements taken for each partial known volume of poured concrete. This means that for each load placed inside the excavation there is a corresponding rising of the concrete level. The profile of the definite pile is then plotted (see Fig. 1) and allows inferring about how stable remained the shaft walls up to the moment of casting.The technological developments in this area have provided other methods for determining pile stability before and after pile cast, such as ultrasonic echo sensing, cross-hole sonic logging or thermal integrity profiling systems. Notwithstanding, concrete overbreak assessment remains as common practice and confers the advantage of providing stability information during the process of pile casting."

In the last two years the Commission for the Environment has received four Environmental Impact Reports (EIR) for Audit and has been or is involved with at least four environmental impact assessments (EIA) related to mining. The EIRs have included Weavers Coal Mine, the Monowai-Maratoto mining proposal, the Martha Hill mine and the Wainui Road Mill. The EIAs are related mainly to coal fields in the Waikato but also included a further EIA on Martha Hill.

The Zagros long tunnel is one of the main components of Sirvan water transfer project in western Iran. It is approximately 48 km in length and consisted of two lots. The second 26 km lot of this tunnel is under construction by a 6.73 m diameter double shield (DS) TBM. The tunnel passes through several formations with wide range rock mass qualities. During the tunnel alignment, changes in rock quality were highly frequent from poor to very good. The encountered geological conditions required TBM operation to change frequently from hard rock to soft, dry to flowing, sticky to nonsticky ground (and vice versa), more often than expected. In the course of tunneling, the machine has encountered nearly many adverse geologic conditions. The most important problems have been sudden high volume water inflow into the tunnel, sticky ground, and gas seepage, all of which resulted in reduced TBM advance rates. This study will high-light two difficult ground conditions including large water ingress and sticky ground and also the related problems encountered by the TBM along 8 km of excavated tunnel. In sticky grounds, cleaning of the clogged cutter head caused many delays and contributed to additional downtime. Application of some operational modifications, including decreased TBM thrust showed satisfactory results in such cases. While reduced thrust resulted in reduced penetration rate, but the overall TBM advance was greatly improved by the increase utilization rate and elimination of down time related to cleaning of the head. To cope with high water inflow, application of preventive measures such as pre-grouting has proved to be a more efficientsolution. The sealing of ground water inflow also decreased seepage of dangerous H2S gas and other chemicals such as hydrocarbons accompanying the groundwater.

An aggregate plant may have difficulty balancing product stockpile inventories if hot mix asphalt (HMA) design engineers do not account for aggregate inventory during mix design. Yet HMA design engineers do not, often, take this into consideration during asphalt mix design. This is due to the lack of tools that enable the lab technician or engineer to optimize the mix for good performance while helping the aggregate plant manage its stockpile inventory levels and reducing the aggregate cost. This work presents a linear programming model of the asphalt mix design problem that helps aggregate plants manage their inventory levels while meeting HMA customer demands. The algorithm is implemented in MATLAB as an Asphalt Mix Design Optimization (AMIDO) program. The program is successfully validated with real-life data. The results show that AMIDO can be used to successfully produce any mix design while reducing the cost of aggregates by using the cheapest stockpile materials. The application of AMIDO will increase aggregate plant profitability when serving HMA customers and could potentially be modified for concrete aggregate customers too.

INAP was formed in 1998 by a number of major mining companies, with a view to sharing acid rock drainage knowledge and experience, and to coordinate global research on the management of sulfidic mine wastes. INAP is now moving to further strengthen its global role by networking with regional organisations that are active in the area of ARD, including MEND 3/NEDEM 3 in Canada, the ADTI in the USA and ACMER in Australia. The INAP-Regional Organisation partnership will be formally launched at the 6th ICARD.

Introduction The science of geometallurgy requires that ore characterization be performed holistically, that is, with consideration of ore quality on plant performance and product quality. Geometallurgy, by definition, requires knowledge of geology, mineralogy, extractive metallurgy and pyrometallurgy. Examples of the ore characterization challenges for the geometallurgist in the production of iron ore pellets from low-grade Proterozoic iron formation are presented here. Ore Characterization Ore characterization, the quantifying of mineralogy, grain size and the texture of ores, is an often overlooked tool in improving process efficiency. Some mineral related problems are not unique to the production of iron ore pellets; e.g. the problems caused by expanding clays in flotation. The negative impact of carbonate minerals in the ore on pellet productivity and pellet quality are unique. The long and complex geologic history of Precambrian iron formations contribute to modifications of grain size and the introduction of complex textures.

Because of price structure, ANFO is normally considered to be the most cost effective explosive used in quarry blasting. Results indicate that bulk smulsion can be more cost effective in applications where hole sizes range up to 6.5 inches in diameter while providing the simplicity of single product loading and storage. This can be accomplished without any fragmentation and/or movement loss usually in patterns which are about twice the size of ANFO patterns, allowing the combined drilling and blasting cost to be less when using bulk emulsions. Examples are presented supporting this concept using actual field results along with some simple calculations which take into account differences in the products such as density, matrix and detonation velocity.

The Bureau of Mines Helium Activity has developed a computer program for use in the reduction of pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) data obtained with a Burnett compressibility apparatus. This program includes important modifications and extensions of some of the methods currently used for treating these types of data and yields statistical information that cannot be obtained from any other published work. The methods of calculation make use of a general nonlinear least-squares technique developed at the Helium Research Center. Because of a need to investigate different functional forms for representing the compressibility factor isotherm, 2, the computer program has been written in such a way that the only additional coding required is the so-called compressibility function subroutine. This subroutine defines the analytical form of Z and certain of its partial derivatives. The program described herein is believed to be the most advantageous for use in treating isothermal Burnett compressibility data.

Oceana Gold (NZ) LtdÆs, Macraes Gold Operation currently has two tailings impoundments, the larger of which covers approximately 75 ha. When an impoundment is temporarily out of use, the surface dries and dust can be blown from the surface to the surrounding area. At present water spraying is used to stabilise the surface, but this is not ideal as Macraes mine can experience water shortages during the summer. This paper examines an alternative method of surface stabilisation using vegetation as a ground cover. The tailings have a low natural fertility, so it is important to determine what will actually grow in the tailings, and whether amendments are necessary. Also important is the effect of the amendments on arsenic mobility in the tailings as the schist rock at Macraes has naturally elevated levels of arsenic. Three plants species, rye corn, barley, and lupin, were grown in metre-deep lysimeters at Macraes mine site. The plants were grown in unaltered tailings, and tailings with one of two amendments added: Bioboost (an organic fertiliser containing biosolids), and superphosphate fertiliser. The leachate from each lysimeter was collected and analysed monthly to determine the extent of arsenic mobility. In addition, laboratory experiments were set up to determine arsenic mobility in tailings with amendments at the centimetre scale.   All plants grew best with the fertiliser amendment, with rye corn growing the best overall. Plants growing in unaltered tailings either barely survived (rye corn, barley) or died (lupin). Plants in the Bioboost amended tailings grew only slightly better than in the unamended tailings. Laboratory experiments indicate that the addition of phosphate fertiliser greatly increases arsenic leaching at the centimetre scale when compared to unamended tailings. The addition of Bioboost only marginally increases arsenic leaching, compared to unamended tailings. This trend has not been repeated in the lysimeter trials on the metre scale over four months. Current results suggest that of the plant types trialed and amendments used, rye corn with superphosphate is the most practical short-term tailings stabilisation method at Macraes.

The latter half of the 20th century has seen the proliferation of a series of codes to address commodity needs which were brought about by rapidly advancing technologies and the globalization of markets and consumerism. This paper addresses the specific needs and the origin of this surge and presents these codes in the context they were developed. It also compares the main codes or groups of codes and elaborates upon their strengths and weaknesses. Three main categories of codes are identified, namely: codes for reporting to international agencies, codes addressing government needs and, finally, codes for the investors and the stock market. Codes governed by international agencies usually relate to strategic commodities which have highly specialized fields of usage like nuclear power generation where international cooperation is eventually the only viable approach for both the development of technologies and their applications. Codes for reporting to governments address the necessity of each state to exploit their mineral potential profitably and to secure the preservation of wealth for future generations. Reporting to investors is experiencing a considerable popularity as of late because of globalization in mining and the growing need for outside financing of mining projects, whose capital requirements are getting out of reach for the average mid-cap mining company. All these codes have advantages and shortcomings dictated by the specific circumstances under which they were developed, therefore necessitating the definition and implementation of some kind of international standard whereby investments and the spread of information across political boundaries would be facilitated. Though none of these codes might ever become international in the true sense of the word because of significantly different legislations at national level, a step that would greatly contribute to the cross-border disclosure of information would be the reciprocal recognition of competent persons by the major mining countries, including China and Russia. It is also becoming essential that financial institutions and investors be properly advised on mining projects by reporting reserves and resources in a transparent and responsible way with the relevant public disclosures being compiled by professionals who take full responsibility for their submissions. The paper designs an extraction flow for the total recovery of nickel and cobalt and removing magnesium simultaneously from the cadthodic materials of the spent hydrogen-nickel and cadmium-nickel batteries. The separation of Co, Ni and Mg though P507 extraction .The extraction equilibrium pH is 4.5~5.0, ßNi/Co is 140~180, and ß Ni/Mg is 20~25; nickel and magnesium are scrubbed in two steps, in which the equilibrium pH of nickel and magnesium scrubbing is controlled at 5.0±0.1 and 4.4±0.1 respectively. The stepwise scrubbing technique is adopted to remove 94.5% of magnesium and to recover 99.45% of nickel and 95.35% of cobalt. During the integrated extraction and precipitation process the total recovery fraction of nickel and cobalt are 99.99% and 99.95%, and the recovery fraction of magnesium is 94.02%.The recovered NiSO4 and CoSO4 solution are enriched and crystallized.

This paper deals with the advances made at Syferfontein Colliery in the calculation and control of dragline methodology. The high capital outlay and operating cost of a dragline necessitates strict control of all aspects of the dragline operation. Before purchasing a dragline, a complete evaluation of all the parameters that can affect the viability, now and in the future, of the dragline operation needs to be completed. Such parameters as thickness of burden, material properties (swell), “castability”, pit width and pit length, etc. need to be considered.

"INTRODUCTION This report embodies the results of a detailed statistical microscopic examination of the ore and the mill products of the Silver King Coalition Mines Co., Park City, Utah.The study was conducted under the joint auspices of the United States Bureau of mines is cooperation with the University of Utah at Salt Lake City, Utah. The work was done in the cooperative Microscopic Service Laboratory, which was equipped by contributions from the following companies: Utah Copper Co., International Smelting & Refining Co., American Smelting & Refining Co., United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co., Tintic Standard Mining Co., Silver King Coalition Mines Co., and Park Utah Consolidated Mines Co. The salaries and the other costs involved in operation of the laboratory were met by contributions from certain supporting companies. "Poor Pb-Zn selectivity during Pb flotation in laboratory tests on a Mississippi Valley-type Pb-Zn ore was traced to apH effect. In the pH range, 9.5 to 11.0 sphalerite floated readily without copper activation. Compared to sphalerite flotation with copper activation this procedure gave equivalent selectivity but reduced flotation rate.Possible mechanisms of this sphalerite flotation without copper activation are discussed. Activation by Fe(OH)2 is suggested, the Fe- + ions being derived from superficial oxidation of pyrite in the ore. IntroductionGalena and sphalerite commonly occur together. A typical procedure, using xanthate collectors, is to float the galena first, at pH - 8, followed by flotation of sphalerite after activation with copper (II) sulphate at pH - 10 (to depress pyrite).Flotation tests following this procedure in an undergraduate laboratory course with a Pb-Zn ore from Polaris failed to achieve consistent selective flotation of galena. Occasionally a considerable amount of sphalerite, even though unactivated with CUSO4, floated. This was traced to accidentally high pH. A systematic study was carried out which revealed that sphalerite floated readily in the pH range 9.5 to 11.0 without activation by CuSO4 This paper describes the results of the study and discusses a possible mechanism of this flotation of sphalerite."

"Manganese ore from Metals Reserve stock piles at Deming, N. Mex., Cushman, Ark., and Philipsburg, Mont., were processed in the Bureau of Mines pilot plant at Boulder City, Nev., to determine their suitability for the production of electrolytic manganese. Manganese was produced successfully from all of the ores.The ores, crushed and ground to minus 33-mesh, were roasted in a Skinner furnace to reduce the manganese and were then leached with spent electrolyte, from the cells, containing sulfuric acid. Acid-leach extractions of 96 percent on Deming, 89 percent on Cushman, and 97.5 percent on Philipsburg ores were obtained. Neutralization of leaches with ammonia results in the highest manganese extraction; but Cushman and Deming leaches could not be neutralized with ammonia, because the amount required was more than enough to maintain the proper ammonium sulfate concentration. A combination of ammonia and calcine was used. However, ammonia was satisfactory for neutralization of Philipsburg leaches. Sulfuric acid needed for make-up was as follows: Deming, 0.380 pound per pound of manganese extracted when neutralized with ammonia and calcine; Cashman, 0.402 pound per pound of manganese extracted when neutralized with ammonia and calcine; Philipsburg, 0.594 round per pound of manganese extracted when neutralized with ammonia alone.All of the leach slurries settled well enough to be separated and washed in countercurrent thickeners.Impurities were precipitated with hydrogen sulfide and removed by filtration. Cushman ore solution contained only- small amounts of impurities and required 0.055 gram of hydrogen sulfide per liter of solution for purification. Deming and Philipsburg solutions contained large amounts of zinc and required 0.55 and 0.65 gram of hydrogen sulfide per liter of solution, respectively.Electrodeposition was satisfactory on all three ores and current efficiencies of 62 to 66 were obtained.A process for the production of electrolytic manganese has been developed by the Bureau of Mines, first on a laboratory scale4/ and then on a semicommercial pilot-plant scale.5/ At first the- pilot plant operated on ore from the Three Kids mine near Las Vegas, Nev., to determine the practical features of the process on ore of this type. Since completing the work on this ore, the pilot plant has been used for processing other domestic ores to obtain engineering data and other economic information regarding the amenability of such ores to the process."
