Despite the wealth of information available on phase equilibria of oxide systems there remainmany gaps and inconsistencies in our knowledge base. From an industry perspective there is anongoing need to adequately describe the phase chemistry of slag systems in order to optimizeprocess performance and improve productivity. Since this chemical behaviour cannot be predictedfrom first principles it follows there is also an ongoing need for accurate experimental data. The advances made in recent years in the capabilities of sophisticated analytical and measurement equipment have made it possible to develop new experimental techniques for the direct determination of phase equilibria in low order and complex multi-component slag systems. In addition the development of powerful computer modelling tools makes it possible to provide more comprehensive descriptions of the phase chemistry, to present the information in a range of perspectives, and to critically analyse the various types of related thermodynamic and structural information available. This review provides an overview of the types of information that can be used to determine phase equilibria in slags systems, analyses the influence of uncertainty and the relative importance of these types of data, and describes the advantages and limitations of the various experimental techniques that can be employed to obtain this information. Examples of recent studies are provided that demonstrate how an integrated approach to the determination of phase equilibria in complex systems, involving the use of targeted experimental studies and systematic thermodynamic model development, can lead to a better utilization of our current research capabilities and resources and more accurate descriptions of these systems. In recent years development of instruments and equipment for determining subsurface pressures and temperatures in. gas and oil wells has made it feasible to obtain information that eras not available in the past on many gas-production problems. The material presented in this report illustrates particularly the value of subsurface-temperature data in the study of subsurface leakage from gas wells. An abnormal decline in the shut-in pressure of the Lone Star Gasoline Co. A. Jones No. 1 gas well in the southern part of the Buffalo (Tex.) field was observed during an interval when a negligible volume of gas bras being withdrawn from the reservoir. Wellhead-pressure readings indicated that the shut-in pressure of the well declined from 2,295 pounds per square inch gage on February 3, 1937, to 1,445 on February 12, 1935. Tests conducted by engineers of the Lone Star Gas Co. suggested that the subnormal pressure gaged on February 12, 1938, probably was not caused by a head of liquid in the well.

September 2005, Northern Dynasty Mines announced the discovery of a new, high-grade deposit at its Pebble project in southwest Alaska. The product of insightful geological investigation, Pebble East, as it is now known, is quickly growing into one of the most significant copper deposits in the world. Preliminary analysis shows it could reduce the U.S. copper supply deficit by a third. The new deposit has also altered Northern Dynasty’s view of how Pebble should be developed. This article describes the Pebble project as it is currently understood and outlines the work planned for the next several years.

Electrowinning metals from solutions leached from low-grade ores is becoming an increasingly important extraction method as the metal industry turns to pollution-free recovery processes. Lead-alloy anodes are used industrially in the electrolytic recovery of zinc and copper. However, associated with the use of these anodes are the inherent problems of stability and lead contamination of the cathode. In an effort to eliminate these problems, the Bureau of Mines has developed a relatively inexpensive lead dioxide anode for electrowinning metals from strong acid solutions. The anode was prepared by depositing Pb02 directly on a titanium blank in a strong HN03-Pb(N03)2 solution at 2.15 to 6.45 A/dm2 and 60° C. This anode was tested in zinc and copper electrowinning cells containing 200 gpl H2S04 and 35 to 100 gpl metal ions at the current density of 3.23 to 6.45 A/dm2. Contamination of the cathode by lead was =0.005 pet. A 30-day test at 6.45 to 12.90 A/dm2 in an electrolyte containing 200 gpl H2S04 and no metal ions resulted in a slight change in surface morphology of the Pb02 anode but no measurable change in anode weight or dimensions.

The present develop­ments in the design of deep foundations lead to the design approach of the Combined Pile-Raft Foundation (CPRF) which offers a lot of new possibilities, e.g. the utilisation of the CPRF for horizontal loading or the use of the subsoil as a geothermal storage system.

This paper describes two independent building underpinning projects during the construction of the Los Angeles Metro Rail System. The first project involves pinpile underpinning of a building along the Red Line which is the main heavy-rail portion of the system. Vertical and inclined friction pinpiles were constructed, using drilling equipment in a low-overhead height space, to support underpinning grade beams. This underpinning permitted the demolition of the building caissons so that the subway tunnels could pass beneath the building unimpeded. One of the piles was statically tested in compression. The second project involves the use of traditional pit piers for the underpinning of historic buildings along the Pasadena Blue Line, which is one of the light-rail branches from the Red Line. The piers were designed for various loading conditions and to minimize differential settlement of adjacent foundations. The piers will be internally braced with steel struts to be designed by the contractor.

The Gilt Edge Superfund Site is a former heap-leach gold mine that currently is being remediated in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Mine runoff water is treated before release from the site. The field pH, before treatment, is about 3, and the water contains arsenic and some heavy metals, in addition to sulfate concentrations of about 1400 to 1500 mg/L. In the Keystone area of the Black Hills, naturally occurring arsenic has been detected in ground-water samples from wells. Keystone City Well #4, which is not used currently, showed arsenic concentrations of 36 parts per billion (ppb) and sulfate concentrations of about 19 mg/L. With field samples of water from these sites, a limestone-based method was successful in reducing arsenic and heavy metals concentrations. The results are significant because previous research with the limestone-based method mainly had involved samples prepared with distilled water in the laboratory, in which interference of other ions such as sulfate did not occur. The research indicates the potential for broader field applications of the limestone-based removal method.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory study to determine what effect use of water-jet-assisted cutting has on frictional-ignition suppression. A single bit with a steel tip, installed on a rotating drum, repeatedly made 22-in-long cuts in a block of Berea sandstone. The drum was operated in an enclosure that contained an explosive methane-air mixture. High-pressure front-mounted water jets operating at 2,000 to 5,000 psig and low-pressure rear-mounted sprays operating at 80 psig were used; the number of ignitions that occurred with each type of spray was compared. The rear-mounted spray was more effective for preventing frictional ignitions than the front-mounted water jet.

The Tamano Smelter of Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co. Ltd. was commissioned in 1972. Since start up, the anode production capacity has increased from 101,000 tpy to 290,000 tpy, as a result of the application of continuous improvements at each phase of the expansion projects. The Tamano Smelter had developed several innovations, including the original coke combustion technology for Flash Smelting Furnace operations (T-FSF), and has also been able to extend the operating life of the Peirce-Smith converters. This paper will present several improvements implemented at the Tamano Smelter, and will discuss relevant P-S converter operation.

Metal-slag phase compositions of molten iron and ilmenite smelting slags or solid titanate phases were determined between 1500° and 1700°C. The influence of oxygen partial pressure and impurity oxide additions including Al2O3, Cr2O3, MgO and SiO2 were investigated along with amount of reductant-carbon. The XRD revealed that the quenched slag crystallized as pseudobrookite (M3O5) solid solution in equilibrium with iron. Silica additions formed separate silicate phases because of its immiscibility in the titanate phase. Under strong reducing conditions iron oxide was almost completely reduced and the slag phase solidified as a consequence thereof. Cr2O3. SiO2 and MnO were also reduced to a high degree. Under weak reducing conditions the slag was fully molten and non of the impurity oxides were reduced. A significant portion of manganese, some magnesia and silicon, in the form of SiO gas, were removed via the gas phase due to their considerable vapour pressures. Alumina was not reduced under the applied conditions. A comparison of the experimental results with industrial data clearly suggested that industrial ilmenite smelting process operated under non-equilibrium conditions.

Sustainability of plant operations in a rapidly changing mining environment requires a well-trained workforce to ensure smooth running of operations. To ensure availability of trained labor, Mopani Copper Mines PLC set up a training facility in 2013. The school offers training in Engineering, Mining and Process. The engineering section enrolls grade 12 school leavers for artisan training. Mining section offers comprehensive safety induction program to employees and contractors to meet the Mopani zero tolerance accidents safety policy. The process training section offers advanced training programs for plant operating personnel and university graduates. The program includes needs analysis, theoretical metallurgical modules, practical plant training and e-learning modules. The school also offers assaying and sampling courses. All the above courses are extended to individuals and other mining houses outside Mopani wishing to have their personnel trained. The Mopani sustainable development academy ensures that contractors engaged on the Mopani sites are fully registered, comply with all relevant regulations and have undergone induction program before they can be allowed to work on the mine. INTRODUCTION “Sustainable operation of the mining industry requires a continuous supply of trained human resources” (Kapobe et al., 2018). The publication by the Asian Development Bank (2014) argued that there was a mismatch between the demand for high-level skills and the oversupply of low-level skills. Globally, the mining industry requires continued supply of skilled manpower for its complex operations and long term projects whose sustainability is absolutely necessary. Implementation of newer technologies in plant operations to ensure cost effective and efficient operations requires trained and skilled labor at various levels to handle ever-changing challenges. Dutz (2007:152–156) made three recommendations for Building Worker and Management Skills in India: Strengthen enterprise - based training. The government should help ensure that the benefits of in- service training are widely recognized by enterprises, while simultaneously providing strong financial incentives Improve vocational training - Vocational education and training systems have been unsuccessful in preparing graduates to meet market needs, particularly because of a lack of interaction with industry. Public and private vocational education and training providers should be strengthened to make them more responsive to industry demands. Curricula should be updated to reflect modern technologies. Strengthen business, management education, management of research and commercialization - business and management education should be strengthened through public-private partnerships. Innovative management courses should be introduced. Although these recommendations were made for India, they also apply to Zambia and other low and medium income nations.

The choice of ventilation schemes in the Northern Mujsky railway tunnel and definition of the nec-essary quantities of air ensuring regulated radiation conditions in the tunnel system has been accomplished. The influence of natural draught on the stability of tunnel ventilation has been estimated. The design of a portal venti-lation gate allowing minimal influence from natural factors is described. The dependence of pressure loss in the sliding ventilation gates on their spanning value of the vehicle tunnel section has been determined. The selection of parameters for an atmospheric air heating system in winter has been carried out. The operation regimes of air heaters, dependent on the temperature of atmospheric air, have been established.

More than 11 Moz of Au and 50 Moz of Ag have been produced from epithermal deposits in New Zealand, almost entirely from 50 deposits in the Hauraki goldfield. Since the 1980s, new deposits have been discovered at Waihi (Favona, Trio, Correnso) and nearby at Golden Cross. Feasibility studies into reopening the Talisman mine at Karangahake are continuing, and advanced projects with preliminary inferred resource estimates are reported at Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Muirs. In the Taupo Volcanic Zone, 11 prospects have been drilled, resulting in the definition of large but low-grade Au-Ag resources at Ohakuri. In Northland, several Au, Ag and/or Hg prospects are known, and small quantities of Ag and Hg have been mined. Six prospects have had some drilling, with the most advanced exploration at Puhipuhi. The application of Taupo Volcanic Zone geothermal systems research to the modelling of former hydrothermal mineralising processes in some epithermal prospects has enabled better targeting of exploration.CITATION:Christie, A B and Barker, R G, 2015. Nevertheless, in very gassy coal seams, this methane released at the face can pose a problem because the shearer is a ready ignition source. Preventing methane ignitions at longwall faces requires four actions. The first is to provide better ventilation around the shearer to eliminate the ventilation eddy zones at the drums where methane builds up. These eddy zones are eliminated by mounting additional water sprays on the shearer to direct air into them. The second action to prevent methane ignitions is to install a water spray behind each cutter bit and regularly replace worn bits. Water sprays behind each cutter bit act to quench the hot metal streak that follows a worn bit when it strikes rock. The third is to ensure that no ventilation eddy zones are inadvertently created by poor placement of water sprays. The fourth is to ensure that the methane monitor on the shearer is in the best location to detect methane accumulations. ADDRESSING METHANE ACCUMULATIONS AT LONGWALL FACES3 Cecala et al. [1985a, 1989] and Denk and Wirth [1991] studied methane emission and ventilation patterns at longwall faces to find where methane accumulations are most likely. Although not always the case, the major source of methane at longwall faces is usually the breakage of coal by the shearer. Stress-related fracturing of the coal seam at the face, called bumps or bounces, can cause the release of additional gas (Figure 4–1).

An on-line rheometer, suitable for use with slurries, has been developed at Michigan Technological University. This rheometer can be used with both Newtonian and non-Newtonian slurries, and produces complete shear-rate/shear stress curves which characterize the time-independent rheology of the slurry. The sensor utilizes the Hagen-Poiseuille equation and Boyle's Law to calculate the shear rate, slurry flowrate, and shear stress from a series of pressure measurements. The design of the unit allows the measurement sample to be continuously collected from operating process streams in the often-hostile on-line environment. The shear rate/shear stress curves can be used to conveniently calculate the apparent viscosity at any given shear rate, and also to measure any yield stress or other deviations from Newtonian behavior.

This Final Report covers the work performed for Contract No. H0377043, "Cables for Face Equipment" from August 1, 1977 to April 1, 1981. It reports the findings in three areas of research: cable protection, circuit-breakers, and high-voltage cable couplers. Laboratory and analytical studies have been conducted in the three areas to determine proper circuit-breaker settings, cable sizes, and coupler performance. Also, an extensive field-monitoring program was established to relate in-mine epxerience to laboratory findings. Further, various pieces of equipment was designed for laboratory testing, particularly in the area of cable reeling and unreeling.

Charge malfunction problems result from rather universal damage mechanisms and are widespread throughout surface and underground delay blasting. Recent refinements in instrumentation technology reveal a range of charge performance difficulties, not just outright misfires. This report focuses on the U.S. Bureau of Mines research regarding desensitization and malfunction of delay detonators and cap-sensitive explosives, utilized in underground coal mining. Delay blasting generates tremendous shock waves and rifting forces that fracture and heave the surrounding stratum. The shock waves from charge explosions propagate outward in all directions through the coal, impacting neighboring charges with later delays. The impact phenomena have debilitating effects, causing degrees of reduced charge performance ranging from misfires or weak detonations to out-ofsequence detonations. Impaired charges react poorly. fracture less coal, and produce fumes with higher toxicity. Coal-mine, underwater, and simulator tests were conducted to m3re thoroughly understand the shock-wave and rift-compression damage mechanisms. Recently the U.S. Bureau of Mines partially resolved the malfunction problem by demonstrating the feasibility of formulating a rugged explosive, which could pass the requisite tests for certifying an underground coal-mine explosive. The charge formulation was not certified only because it lost initiation sensitivity too quickly from natural aging and had to be rebatched to finish the testing.

Electric furnaces used for smelting and those used for scrap melting exhibit different performance profiles in terms of electrical characteristics. However, the underlying principles are the same for either case. The rationalization of these variables is a major concern for furnace operators and designers. This paper presents the results of a two year study of high speed real time data from a number of electric furnaces around the world, covering a very wide range of design philosophy and product manufacture, to provide a better mathematical insight into rationalizing the furnace operation.

Conveyors are a highly effective means of transporting material over long distances. Recently there has been a trend toward long conveyor systems with high capacity single flights. These conveyor systems are an efficient alternative to costly truck fleets. Also with deeper mines, the use of diesel driven trucks becomes more difficult. Another trend is in underground mining, where conveyors are an efficient alternative to drift hoists or dedicated rail systems.

The deadline for meeting legal requirements relating to the sale of explosives in the European Union was 1 January 2003. The paper examines the range of materials that have already been certified by the different Explosives Notified Bodies as well as recent national and European Commission decisions relating to this work. The implications of enlargement of the European Union are also discussed as is the future role of the Great Britain Explosives Notified Body in certification and assessment.
