Certain roof shales in coal mines deteriorate upon exposure to the atmosphere, causing difficulties in the mining operations and adding to the cost. This report presents the results of both field investigations, in a West Virginia mine, and laboratory studies on the effects of atmospheric moisture on roof shales. Based on these observations, a conceptual procedure is presented on how shale deterioration might be predicted during exploration, and guidelines are given as to how air tempering or conditioning chambers may be designed to reduce moisture effects. Recommendations for further studies are included. An annotated bibliography of the literature constitutes the second volume.

Fully mechanized longwall mining with large mining heights (LMHs) in shallow-depth thick coal seams has been widely applied in Shenfu coalfield, China. Dynamic loading and rib spalling is serious when the LMH working face experiences periodic weighting in shallow coal seams. The advanced breaking position (fracturing ahead of the face) in the roof affects the strength of the mine pressure (weighting) when the roof is broken. Based on the theory of the “elastic foundation beam,” this paper presents a mechanical model for the advanced breaking of the roof, including a predictive formula. In an attempt to verify the formula, a field program consisting of multiple-point borehole extensometers installed in the roof in advance of the longwall face was performed in the No. 22201 working face of Zhangjiamao coal mine in the Shenfu mining area, China. The field measurement results show that the roof movement of the LMH working face is detected prior to roof pressure increase, and that the roof breaks approximately 5–8 m ahead of the face. This compares with a calculated value of 6.9 m, indicating that the formula developed in this research is reliable and should have application in predicting roof pressure associated with LMH working faces in shallow coal seams.

The laws of throwing and heaping of engineering blast are important for making use of throwing and heaping of thrown body to form certain shape, such as building dams by directional blast. The article is to apply Ballistic theory of single thrown body to take the throwing course of thrown body as the movement of particle system, and then delimit the total of thrown body into units of thrown bodies, and regard the heaping shape of single thrown body as a perfect triangle, and found a quantitative relation between macro-geometry parameters of perfect triangle and designed parameters of explosives. The theory has been adopted in blast practice and gotten good effects.

In the present work a ceramic body, fabricated using a mixture of clays and sand, for roofing tiles, produced in Campos dos Goytacazes, north of the State of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, was characterized. Characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction, thermo analysis, chemical analysis, particle size distribution determination and plasticity. In addition, technological properties related to water absorption, linear shrinkage and flexural rupture strength were determined in samples fired at 700, 900 and 1100oC. The results showed that the investigated ceramic body has satisfactory plasticity and presents a refractory behavior during firing due to the predominantly kaolinitic nature of the clays.

"A graphical method to assess the size reduction by grinding is presented and illustrated with data collected from laboratory grinding tests and industrial grinding circuits. The method lies between the graphical comparison of size distributions and the population balance model. The method is easy to apply and provides a quick way to compare grinding mill performances under various operating conditions and processed ores. The application of the method to industrial mills shows that a grinding mill operation could present an invariant behaviour that can be exploited for simulation purposes.INTRODUCTIONThe size reduction of particles by grinding has been studied for decades and several books were published on the subject. Most of the recent studies focus on the modelling of the ball, semiautogenous and autogenous grinding mills operation (Napier-Munn et al., 1996) because accurate simulators can be used for design, optimization and control. Although the development of realistic simulators is progressing, the trial and error method is still used by many operators to identify optimum operating conditions for a grinding machine.Laboratory tests allow the characterization of the material submitted to grinding and the analysis of various operating conditions, such as ball size or shape, mill speed and slurry concentration of solids, on particle size reduction. Similar tests can be conducted in a plant, but results are often difficult to analyze due to errors associated with sampling and sensor accuracy. This paper presents a graphical method to assess the degree of size reduction carried out by a grinding machine. The paper consists of three sections. The first section describes the method and the following sections illustrate the method with data taken from laboratory and industrial grinding machines."

Microorganisms are directly or indirectly involved in many chemical alterations and in the decomposition of minerals required for their growth. Microbial dissolution of sulfide minerals under acidic conditions can produce over 1,000 times more Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) than chemical action alone. Microbial actions can cause precipitation of minerals, adsorption or release of metals, and formation/destruction of organic-metallic complexes. Soluble minerals can serve as oxidizing substrates, electron donors/acceptors in redox reactions, and can be directly involved in cell metabolism. Microorganisms and microbial oxidation-reduction reactions and their contribution to mineral mobilization and stabilization will be discussed.

The recession that took hold of the domes-tic mining industry in 1981-82 finally abated somewhat in 1987, resulting from increases in many commodity prices, especially in the metals sector, and from continuing success in lowering operating costs. By no means was the work finished; the mining industry was in a sense entering a new era. The struggle for survival was still very evident for many companies and various commodities, but increasing productivity and profits were accompanied by indications that these trends were more long term than short term. Raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1987 had an estimated value of $26.3 billion, an increase of $2.9 billion over the 1986 value. This is the fifth consecutive year that the value has increased. Except for a decrease in 1982, the value each year has increased since 1971, or 15 of 16 years. The value of raw metals production increased by an estimated 28%, an impressive improvement since the drastic fall in 1982. Industrial minerals growth was comparatively flat, with an estimated in-crease in value of 0.1 %, continuing a trend of the previous 2 years. Metal mine production dropped considerably in 1982 and maintained its resultant lower level until 1987, when production significantly recovered.

Heap and valley leach operations rely on solution collection piping placed within the heap to enhance both solution recovery and to assist overall solution management. The most common piping used in leaching operations is solid or perforated High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe and Corrugated Polyethylene pipe (CPE). These pipes are widely used because of their low cost, ease of installation, durability, and flexibility. The typical recommended maximum design depth of burial for HDPE and CPE pipes is on the order of 30 meters (100 feet). However, ore heap heights at many facilities exceed 30 meters and some are now approaching 180 meters (600 feet) in height. At very high ore heap heights, the stability and performance of HDPE and CPE pipes becomes a critical issue for leaching facility design and operation. Failure of solution collection piping can lead to poor solution recovery, high hydraulic heads on the liner system, and in some cases, unstable ore slopes due to high solution pressures near slopes. This paper presents a review of methods that have traditionally been used to evaluate pipe stability under high normal loads. A common shortcoming of these methods is the inability to account for beneficial effects of ore arching around pipes and the time-dependent creep (stress relief) behavior of polyethylene (PE) materials. A new analytical approach is developed and presented which includes the effects of ore arching around pipes and creep of PE materials. The results of the new approach show that PE pipes will deform under high heap loads, but can remain stable and functional. Pipe stability is shown to be dependent on the type of pipe backfill and initial backfill compaction. The new approach represents a useful tool for designing applications for PE pipe under high normal loads.

In 1995 I was asked to participate in a litigation matter between a corporation and its insurance carriers concerning insurance coverage for remedial costs at a large, environmentally contaminated closed-down former industrial facility. One of the buildings on this site became known to the lawyers representing the company as “the infamous Building 8”. This building housed millions of documents retrieved from various locations at the facility while it was being shut down. It became apparent that the facility management had no document destruction policy, and thus Building 8 contained internal memoranda, notes, copies of correspondence, permits, operating records, inventory records, and the like from fifty years of operation. Needless to say, some of these documents, all of which were subject to discovery by the insurance companies in the litigation, contained material that was less than helpful to the company’s case. Of course, there were also a few helpful documents, but the overall usefulness of these records was outweighed by the negative impact they had on the conduct of the litigation. A second example involves e-mail. Several years ago, acting on an anonymous complaint that we later discovered was made by a disgruntled former employee who had been fired, a small army of federal environmental investigators descended on a client’s operating facility and, armed with a search warrant, literally commandeered the facility’s EH&S department. The investigators impounded the computers of the EH&S personnel and extracted all of the data from the hard drives of those PCs, as well as all EH&S related files from the hard drives of several servers used by the facility. These computers contained many years’ worth of stored e-mails, draft letters and memoranda, and other documents that provided grist for a four and one-half year criminal grand jury investigation of the facility and its EH&S staff. Both of these companies would have benefited from following a rigorous, enforceable, corporate records policy. Here is a third problem. My client had, during the 1960s, made a brief, and unprofitable foray into the nuclear fuel processing business. It ultimately sold the subsidiary, and was forced to give the purchasing company a broad indemnity against future liability. As might be expected, years later the facility was found to have considerable soil and ground water contamination both by chlorinated solvents and low-level radioactive material. Several years into the remediation program, my client discovered a tractor-trailer load of files, apparently removed from the subject facility, sitting in a parked trailer in a company-owned lot 300 miles away from the facility, where they had been for nearly thirty years. These documents were not helpful to the client, but had to be reviewed, at considerable cost, by paralegals. Moreover, several of the boxes turned out to have been mildly radioactive, setting off a chain of health and safety issues that consumed tens of thousands of dollars of legal expenses before they were resolved. Today, formal, enforceable corporate records management programs have become an extremely important element of overall corporate management. What was for most of the last century little more than a low level warehousing function is now a critical, actively managed, operating function that affects every level of corporate management. The rapid assimilation into corporate culture of electronic document management and the prevalence of e-email as the primary means of internal communication have created records management complexities the likes of which were not even conceived of fifteen years ago. Record preservation and destruction are no longer matters that can be handled on an ad-hoc decision making basis. Because of regulatory requirements affecting various classes of documents and the litigation consequences of ad hoc retention and destruction of corporate business records, and the need to have the ability to quickly retrieve documents in either a litigation or business negotiation context, a set of records management norms have evolved over time that have become the core elements of virtually every corporate records program. Construction of the drilled shafts for the Brightman Street Bridge Replacement Project were not only challenging due to working over the water but were also challenged by changed soil conditions, concurrent work being performed by an adjacent contractor on the same project, environmental restrictions and severe winter conditions. A total of 36 x 8 feet diameter drilled shafts with 7.5 feet rock sockets were installed for the East and West bascule piers. This project also included Osterberg Cell load testing on two production drilled shafts at each the East and West bascule piers. The results from the load test program were used to fine tune the design of the drilled shaft rock sockets. From a constructability standpoint the reverse circulation drilling method with a pile top drill rig proved to be an excellent choice for drilling the overburden and rock sockets of the large diameter deep drilled shafts.

For 11 years, under authorization of the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of April 5, 1944 (30 U.S.C. 321-325), and amendments, the Bureau of Mines has carried on an extensive research and development program to establish methods for producing oil from coal and from oil shale. This act was passed by the 78th Congress primarily because of the stress of wartime demands for liquid fuels to supply our armed forces during World War II. The act was progressively extended by the 80th and 81st Congresses, as later peace-time demand for oil and oil products continued to increase.

Fully-grouted roof bolts comprise more than 80% of the primary roof supports used in U.S. coal mines. However, nearly 1,500 MSHA reportable, non-injury roof falls occur each year, and most of these are attributable to failure of the roof bolt system. Anchorage failure is one failure mechanism for fully-grouted bolts. As roof deformation works its way upward, the bolts can become heavily loaded near their upper ends. If the applied load exceeds the anchorage, the bolts will simply pull out. Research dating back 30 yrs indicates that this type of anchorage failure is most likely when the roof rock is weak, just where roof support is most critical. In soft shale or coal roof, the small amount of data available in the literature indicates that 20-30 in of resin anchorage may be required to achieve the full capacity of the bolt. In other words, the “full resistance zone” of a 60 in bolt may actually be just 30-40 in. Despite its potential importance, there is no widely accepted anchorage test for fully grouted bolts. Standard pull tests have sometimes been employed, but they provide no information on the anchorage near the top of the bolt. An alternative, first described more than 25 yrs ago in the U.S., is the short-encapsulation pull test (SEPT). With this test, the bolt is installed with only a short (1 ft or less) tube of resin. Increasing interest is being expressed in the development and availability of Electronic Delay Detonators throughout the world. Particularly in open-cast mining, the benefits associated with precise, reliable initiation systems are perceived to be considerable. Many of the systems currently being developed have sophisticated programming requirements associated with them, or are numbered systems that require predetermined layouts to determine timing patterns, and importantly are far more expensive than existing initiation systems.

A bearing isolator is a noncontact, nonwearing, permanent bearing protection device. It has a rotor and a stator, and the two are unitized, so that they do not separate from one another while in use. The rotor turns with a rotating shaft, while the stator is pressed into a bearing housing. The two components interact to keep contamination out of the bearing enclosure and the lubricant in. Bearing isolators do not require lubrication or any particular shaft finish or condition. The best bearing isolators are made of metal, usually bronze. They use a vapor-blocking feature that inhibits the free transfer of vapor contamination when the rotating equipment is cycled on and off.

At coal mine working faces, simultaneous application of three basic elements reduces the methane explosion hazard: (1) adequate ventilation, (2) regular monitoring of gas concentrations, and (3) the elimination of ignition sources. This paper reviews the application of these elements in a manner relevant to Chinese coal mines. Adequate ventilation is provided by using the mine entries to convey air for the long distances between the mine portal and the working sections (main ventilation systems) and then using line brattice or ventilation duct (face ventilation systems) to convey air the last hundred meters to the working face where coal is broken and removed. The air quantity provided is enough to safely dilute methane and the air velocity is enough to prevent layering. Gas concentrations are regularly monitored in accordance with regulations using knowledge of the circumstances under which the highest concentrations are likely to be found. Ignition sources are eliminated by ensuring that electrical equipment does not ignite methane, that sparking from cutter picks is minimized, and that smoking by workers is strictly forbidden. Risk-reduction studies using fault-tree analysis have shown that large reductions in explosion risk only result from multiple preventive actions. For example, a ventilation upgrade or a methane monitor upgrade by itself offers risk reductions under 50 pct. A risk reduction of 90 pct. or more would typically require much more. Other studies have shown that the everyday vigilance of those working underground is as important as engineering design.

The fire assay process for the quantitative recovery of platinum group elements (PGE?s) prior to subsequent analysis traditionally is a time-consuming process. Samples derive from various ore types and contain PGE?s at the ppm or ppb levels, making concentration of the elements mandatory before assaying. Traditionally sample turn-around times are of the order of 24 hours. The whole sequence of sample preparation, fire assay and subsequent analysis of PGE?s have been automated by Anglo Platinum. Some of the major challenges on the road to automation will be discussed and the novel solutions that were implemented. The engineered solution included robotic automation of the whole sequence, from sample preparation, up to the final element by element assay. The final system allowed for rapid (less than one hour) and accurate analysis of PGE?s even in streams containing very low levels, such as flotation tailing streams and drill core samples.

CIS countries are home to some of the world's largest producers of chrome, manganese and silicon ferro alloys and leading suppliers to world export markets. The region's ferro alloys production is rising faster than demand from its domestic steel industry - unit alloy consumption in domestic steelmaking is in fact falling as process efficiencies improve - and there is significant spare capacity available to increase production. CIS producers enjoy certain strategic advantages in the production of ferro alloys - for example, captive ore sup-plies, low power and labour costs - but must also meet certain challenges - such as lower labour productivity and greater distance to market than some of their competitors. CIS producers are ambitious but new investment is needed to upgrade some aging plants and overhaul outdated process technologies if they are to be more competitive with the world's leading producers and address the environmental issues that are now moving up the agenda. This paper describes the structure of the region's ferro alloys industry and discusses its advantages and disadvantages by alloy and by country. It considers how the ongoing process of restructuring and new investment in the industry might move forwards, based on its strengths and weaknesses, technical and environmental factors and the strategies of the main players. It asks how the industry might maximise its substantial potential - in particular, for the production of chrome and manganese ferro alloys - and examines the implications this holds for all global ferro alloys players.

This paper describes a newly developed Surface Remote Blasting System (SURBS) for electronic detonators, which is currently being introduced into surface blasting applications. The rationale for developing the SURBS was to meet key needs of mine operations, such as minimizing the shutdown time and the capability to conveniently initiate blasts in difficult terrain from a safe distance. Increased distance from the blast site, combined with a good overview of the site enables maximum safety during blasting. The system also removes the inconvenience of running long firing cables. The SURBS consists of the field-proven detonator and equipment technology of an existing electronic detonator system, a Surface Remote Blasting Box and a Surface Remote Blaster. The Surface Remote Blaster is the Master unit and controls the Remote Blasting Box via encrypted radio communication using a sophisticated safety technology, which guarantees that the highest safety standards are maintained.
