Schytill and Geldart diagrams were developed for the TiO2-C-Cl2 system at 1 073 and 1 273 K, so as to define the hypothetical relations between particle sizes and chlorine velocity for simultaneous fluidisation of mixtures of anatase concentrate and charcoal for carbochlorination. It was concluded that the operating limits on chlorine gas velocity will be controlled by the behaviour of the reducing agent, mainly because of its lower density. An increase in temperature from 1 073 to 1 273 K will have only a small influence on the fluid-dynamic behaviour of the mixture. For bubble fluidisation, the maximum sizes 0.413-0.478 mm for anatase and 0.529-0.611 mm for charcoal will be adequate. When the particle size distribution is large, fluidisation will be feasible only if conducted in two stages, otherwise the residence time of the small particles in the reactor will be very short. Underground mining is a dynamic art and science with a diverse set of design, production, and economic criteria that must be considered before selecting an optimal method to extract the ore. While all methods can be technically classified as either self-supported, supported, or caving, the multitude of subsystems and existing variations bear witness to the fact that each orebody is unique and, as such, justifies an individual approach to optimize mineral extraction. In this sense, underground mining is an art. The ability to evaluate the unique characteristics of each ore body and utilize sound engineering principles to design the optimal system constitutes effective method selection. The task by no means ends at this juncture, however. Subsequent implementation requires an ability for modification. Very rarely are all the facts available to make a concrete decision prior to development of the resource. As a result, the risk of a wrong decision can never be eliminated. This requires a significant degree of flexibility with each method. Each unit of exploration, development, or exploitation work contributed to a deposit enhances knowledge of the ore body. The best mining methods are those that correctly account for the known parameters but provide an allowance for change at minimal cost and adapt to unanticipated conditions.

SO much has been written recently about the use of silver to replace scarce metals that certain facts about silver and its uses should be of interest. Figures for the production and use of silver, taken from the Handy & Harman annual reviews of the silver market, are given in Table 1. It will be seen that the rate of production has remained fairly constant and has been affected in recent years by the production of base metals, of which silver is a by-product. In each of the years 1937, 1938, and 1939, the U.S. Government acquisitions alone exceeded the entire world production, the difference, of course, being made up by imports of previously accumulated stocks. In 1940 and 1941 the U. S. Government acquisitions plus the United States and Canadian uses in the arts and industries exceeded the Western Hemisphere production. The U.S. Government pays a premium price for silver newly mined in the United States, at present 71.11c. compared with the price of 35'/8c. for foreign silver, with the result that the current U. S. production is not used commercially for the arts and industries. At the time this is written (June 1942) there is much uncertainty as to the future effect of this situation.

ALTHOUGH nickel was in use in alloys long before the Christian era, the metal was not discovered until 1751, when Cronstedt recognized it in niccolite from Sweden. The Chinese apparently used a nickel alloy, known as "pahfong" thousands of years ago and Persian coins dating farther back than 200 B.C. consist of a copper-nickel alloy similar to some of those now in use in coins. The pure metal was first prepared about 1775 and the metal was refined for commercial purposes some years later. The nickel industry did not attain much prominence until the ores in New Caledonia were discovered. Exports of ore from that country began in 1875 and since that date there has been an ever-increasing world output of nickel and a great expansion in the uses of the metal except during short periods of commercial and industrial depression. Previous to 1875, for a number of years, Norway was the chief producer, although the metal was mined also in Sweden, Finland, Italy, Germany, Austria, France, China, the United States and other countries. With the dis-covery of nickel deposits in the Sudbury district, Ontario, a new factor was introduced into the nickel industry and Sudbury has since become the overwhelmingly dominant feature in the world's nickel markets. Although nickel was first discovered in Canada as early as 1848 near the north shore of Lake Huron and nickel-copper sulfides were found in 1856 by surveyors working close to the present location of the important mine at Creighton, in the Sudbury field, it was not until 188.3 that any importance was attached to this field. In that year copper sulfide attracted attention where the main line of the Canadian Pacific railroad was being projected across Canada to the Pacific coast. Mining began near this discovery in 1889 but in the meantime operations had begun in 1886 in other parts of the field and by 1890 about 100,000 tons of ore had been raised. In the Sudbury field, as in Norway and at the old Lancaster Gap mine in Pennsylvania, the ore was first mined for its copper content and difficulty in the refining of the copper led to the discovery of the important proportions of nickel in the ore. This regional report covers the mineral industries of Canada and 40 countries and areas in Latin America and the Caribbean Basin. Also included is a brief description of the mineral potential of Antarctica. The Latin American region encompasses an area twice that of the United States. Latin America and Canada have a rich and diversified endowment of mineral fuels, metals, and industrial minerals. Tables 2 and 3 provide a summary view of the importance of Latin America and Canada's output of its major mineral commodities in world mineral supply in 1989 and 1990.

Summary During the last three years the discovery of gold in the belt of volcanic and sedimentary rocks extending eastward from the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake gold-fields has caused a great deal of excitement in mining circles. The area is heavily drift covered, and every aid to the location of veins is eagerly grasped. A knowledge of the physiographic history of the area is of the utmost importance in the application of many of these aids. Evidence is presented to show that glacial erosion has lowered the general elevation very little below the pre-glacial level, and that many glacial erratics have been carried less than three miles southward. Probably a knowledge of the general geology of a: region was never more necessary to the understanding of the distribution and continuation in depth of the mineral veins than in this area. Four distinct granites occur in the region, and gold-bearing veins are genetically associated with only one of these. Two types of quartz-feldspar porphyries have been found, only one of which has any bearing on the locus of the mineral veins. Many other examples of this complexity of associations might be cited, but everyone goes to show that in most cases the economic importance of the deposits can be realized only after the regional geology is understood. A series of sandstone, limestone and shale intruded by granite lies unconformably below the Keewatin lavas. The latter are intruded by a gneissoid granite and are overlain unconformably by the thick series of Timiskaming greywackes and silts. These are intruded by carbonated syenites and syenite porphyries which have since been rendered somewhat schistose.

"Best practice in the economic evaluation of mining projects and operations is based on the integration of geological, mining, metallurgical, environmental, marketing, economic and corporate information and strategies. Fundamentally, the economic evaluation takes into account mining, blending, stockpiling, processing, smelting, refining and marketing ore resources with grades estimated by geostatistical methodologies.Nevertheless, a realistic economic evaluation consists of a concurrent and integrated optimization process that maximizes the concentrates or products of liberated and selected ore minerals from mineral deposits. The optimum solution is obtained through a trade-off among mining, blending, stockpiling and processing ore reserves with distinct mineralogy and texture characteristics. The concurrent optimization determines both the practical mining sequence of ore reserves and the dynamic and robust mineral processing flowsheet design over the expected life of mining projects and operations.A combined risk-adverse and concurrent optimization process takes into account the spatial uncertainty of the mineralogy and texture characteristics of ore reserves. Additionally, a variety of mineral processing linear, non-linear, additive and non-additive parameters modeled spatially. The spatial uncertainty of these ore reserves characteristics and parameters has a direct impact in the expected mining sequence, mineral processing flowsheet design, concentrates or products quantity and quality, and economic value of mining projects and operations.Geometallurgical domain constrained stochastic geostatistical methodologies and multivariate mathematical models are applied for spatial uncertainty modeling of ore reserves characteristics and parameters. These mathematical models correlate the mineral processing liberation and selectivity responses of the mineralogy and textures within each geometallurgical domain. These models, in turn, are defined based on results of mineral processing and environmental testwork of unbiased and representative samples chosen for their variability. These samples are selected within mutually exclusive spatial geometallurgical uncertainty domains with similar mineralogical and textural characteristics in mineral deposits.Geometallurgical domains are defined by applying and combining multivariate statistical analysis and implicit modeling methodologies. These involve determining and constraining mineral processing liberation and selectivity properties explicitly contained in the extensive and integrated exploration drillhole database."

The Federal Government, as the largest lessor of oil and gas lands in the United States, is vitally interested in the conservation of those resources. This manual has been prepared at the direction of the Secretary of the Interior to call the attention of lessees of public oil and gas lands to the most common oil and gas field wastes and the best methods of preventing them; to outline the policies of the Interior Department on field operations; and to give information as to how the "Operating Regulations" of the department will be interpreted by the Bureau of Mines. The oil industry has progressed steadily. Present operating methods are much more efficient-and less wasteful-than those of a few years ago; moreover, the art of producing oil and gas is continually advancing. Public interest requires that improved methods, which will result in obtaining the greatest possible amounts of oil and gas from the natural deposits, shall be developed and used. Part I of this manual points out types of oil and gas wastes and suggests, in detail or by reference, the most practical and effective methods in current practice for stopping these wastes. Throughout Part I the department's operating policy is given, with interpretations of the "Operating Regulations" for enforcing every practical measure of conservation. Part II comprises the revised "Operating Regula-tions" which supersede all previous regulations and will govern future operations on public lands; it will be found in the pocket in the back cover of this bulletin.

This volume was prepared in support of an evaluation of the Advancing Oil Shale Mining Technology Program performed by The Aerospace Corporation under a Bureau of Mines contract. The evaluation is described in part within a companion volume entitled Benefit-Cost Analysis. The economic mine models outlined herein provide a quantitative basis for the assessment of program benefits. Reference is made to estimated oil shale mine costs to delineate the beneficial impacts that can be expected to accrue for the future implementation of program developed technology. Estimated mine cost data are provided for surface, underground, and modified in situ oil shale mining operations.

"Niobium or columbium, as usually called in North America is becoming a more and more important metal in the industrial world because of its attractive properties.Eventhough discovered in the early nineteenth century, it was not until the 1930's that its use became more widespread. The discovery of large commercial deposits in the late 1950's and the demand of industry for steel with high strength and toughness further promoted its use. To assure its adequate supply new or-e processinr technologies had to be developed. So, beside the traditional gravity concentration, the flotation process was employed for the partial upgrading of pyrochlore concentrate at S8ve (Norway) plant in 1953. The flotation process was equally used at St-Lawrence Columbium plant in the province of Quebec, Canada. The new plants at Araxa and Catalao in Brazil and at St-Honore, Canada, which supply almost of all niobium used today in the non-Communist world, also adopted the flotation process. The processes using long chain aliphatic rnonoarnines, diamines or sulfonates as collectors proved to be difficult especially on weathered types of ores or on those having a substantial content of silicate gangue minerals. They almost completely failed in case of alkaline intrusive rocks as syenites, nepheline syenite, ijolites and pyroxenites, composed almost entirely of silicate minerals. A lot of effort was devoted all around the world on research of new, more efficient flotation processes. So in 1982, Les Services T.M.G. Inc. (Niobec), sole producer of pyrochlore concentrate in North America, developed the direct pyrochlore flotation process from carbonatites. In 1983, at about the same time, the Quebec Department of Natural Resources Laboratories and Les Services T.M.G. Inc. announced a successful recovery of niobium Minera1s from a low grade nenheline syenite ore."

THIS GLOSSARY is published lay the Bureau of Mines as a contribution too the mining literature to fill a long-felt need for a compilation of the terms used by the diamond-drilling industry. The first step toward preparation of the glossary was taken in October 1955 when the Diamond Core Drill Manufacturers Association (DCDMA) proposed that the Bureau of Mines undertake the cons compilation and publication of a glossary of the terms used by the diamond-drilling industry. The work was authorized in July 1956, and a preliminary draft of the glossary was completed in may 1958. Copies of the draft were submitted for review to members of the DCDMA and appropriate personnel of the Bureau of Mines. The final draft, incorporating the many helpful suggestions of the reviewers representing both the diamond-drilling industry and the Bureau of Mines, was completed in March 1959.

Although not immune from the problems affecting the U.S. economy generally, the mineral industry in 1991 contributed nearly $300 billion in the value of processed materials of mineral origin. Supporting this contribution, the Bureau of Mines continued the research and analytical programs highlighted in this annual review. Featured in 1991 were such relatively new programs as minewide monitoring applications in ground control and advances in processing of ceramics and composites, along with more traditional research into health, safety, and mining technology, minerals and materials science, and environmental technology. Under Bureau sponsorship, a National Minerals Policy Forum brought together some 200 executives from industry and Government concerned with minerals policy to begin a dialogue on developipng a policy statement on current minerals issues. A major feature of the forum was the keynote address by Secretary of the Interior Manuel Lujan, Jr.

The Ilo Refinery was commissioned in 1975, with a cathode production capacity of 150,000 tpy. In 1994, Southern Perú Copper Corporation (SPCC) purchased the Refinery from Minero Perú SA. Subsequently, in November 1999, Grupo Mexico acquired control of Southern Perú. The anode production facility is located at the Ilo Refinery. A number of effective operating and quality control practices have been developed that have improved anode quality, as well as increasing anode production capacity to 350,000 tpy. These, and other optimization actions have allowed for a current density increase from 213 A/m2 to 275 A/m2, while maintaining current efficiency at 98% and sustaining the high quality of the cathode. The paper will outline the scope of operational practices in the Anode Plant and provide some discussion on the Ilo Smelter modernization project, and the resulting impact on the existing anode plant.
