Introduction A new technology is evolving as a result of growing industry and government concerns over the potential impacts of possible airborne emissions from uranium tailings piles. A major component of the technology is the use of earth covers to stabilize the tailings after mill operations have ceased. While various analytical models have been used to predict the thickness of required covers, experimental validation of the models has been necessary. This paper presents the results of a field program to select and test cover material to determine its suitability for eventual reclamation of a currently active tailings pile. The two main criteria guiding the study were the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission radon flux requirements (reduction to less than twice background pre-1979, and to 2 pCi/m2 -sec above background post-1979) and the desire to employ locally available material. The methodology chosen for this study consisted of three main elements: o Determination of the background radon flux. o Determination of the radon flux from the tailings pile. o Experimental determination of the cover material diffusion coefficient and and calculation of cover thickness. The first two elements of the study are relatively straightforward, the last phase is discussed in detail. Background Radon Flux Measurements of radon-222 emanation rates from the surface of the ground were taken at three sampling locations. Samples were collected by means of the accumulator can method described by Wilkening, 1977. Both morning and afternoon samples were collected at each site to obtain an average. The measured fluxes were fairly uniform and did not differ greatly among sites. The overall average flux for all sites was 0.63[+]0.28(o) pCi/m2 -sec. This value is equal to the average radium-226 concentration determined in the soil, thus yielding a one to one ratio of radon-222 emitted (in pCi/m2 -sec) to soil radium content (in pCi/g). The solute-transport model OTIS and the reactive solute-transport model OTEQ were used to simulate geochemical conditions in Cement Creek, a tributary to the Anirnas River in Colorado. OTIS was used to depict instream zinc concentrations, and to simulate the effects of two remediation scenarios on zinc concentrations at the mouth of Cement Creek. These simulations do not account for effects of changing stream pH on metal concentrations. Preliminary simulations using OTEQ to account for instream pH changes were unsuccessful due to the spatial nature of mixing processes, and insufficient information about the thermodynamic properties of precipitates forming in mixing zones.

A statistically-designed exper¬mental study showed how gangue minerals, flux additions, fineness of grind, firing temperature and time affect the properties of acid pellets made from a Western Australian hematite ore. Alumina has less effect than silica and lime, but various interactions between the six variables occur, which influence abrasion index, reducibility and cold compression strength. Finer grinding has little influence on reducibility but improves the other two properties. The major variable is firing temperature. It interacts with all other variables in its effects on pellet properties. Calculations based on the data show the implications for straight-grate pellet plants and optimum hood temperature range.

In addition to this, it has wide industrial use in the manufacture of many products - detergents, baking powder, carbonated beverages, steel, matches, munitions, glass, insecticides, dyes, water softeners and innumerable others. This paper presents the results of an application of the PSU/USBM Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (1) to a large stripping mine in the Southwestern Coalfield. The specific objective of the study was to demonstrate the application of the simulator to a complex multi-pit operation, with emphasis on simulating short term and long term production plans recommended for the mine by Theodore Barry Associates (2). Mine Description The mine is located in the Southwestern Coalfield, which encompasses parts of the states of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. The lease area presently covers 121500 x 103 m2 (30000 acres) in a strip 37.007 x 103 m (23 miles) from north to south and up to 1609 m (1 mile) in width, located at an elevation above 1525 m (5000 ft). Three gently dipping coal seams are present, of which the upper seam (#3) averages 0-5.5 m (0-18 ft); the intermediate seam (#2) averages 0-1.2 m (0-4 ft); and the lower seam (#1) averages 0-2.4 m (0-8 ft). Overburden is mixed sand, gravel, calcareous clay, caliche and sandstone, with calcareous shale and sandstone burden between seams. Where the seams are covered by less than 6.1 m (20 ft) of overburden, they are generally weathered and oxidized and are not extracted. Stripping ratios have ranged from 3.5 to 6.0 with an average of 5.4. All future plans were based on a stripping ratio of 5.3.

Nine western states contain significant barite deposits, but most deposits are in Nevada, which has been the principal western producer for more than three decades. Nevada produces about 85% of the total United States production, but about one-half of the barite consumed in the country is imported. Approximately 95% of the barite is used in drilling muds. Sharply decreased oil and gas drilling, starting in early 1982, severely depressed the domestic barite industry. Other problems for western barite include long distances to the areas of major drilling, high railroad-freight rates, and increased barite imports. Bedded deposits, formed by submarine exhalative processes, account for almost all western production, and reserves are large.

An analysis of an iron-ore processing plant showed that its performance was affected by seasonal temperature variations, resulting in reduced grinding efficiency during the winter months. Laboratory and pilot plant studies were conducted to determine the cause of the observed loss of efficiency at lower temperatures. Two types of experiments were performed: drop tests and wet grinding tests. Drop testing was performed to determine the effect of brittleness and frozen pore water on the breakage characteristics of the ore. The wet grinding tests were divided into laboratory tumble tests and pilot-plant tests. The combined results of drop testing and wet grinding were used to make predictions on the performance of plant-scale autogenous grinding. From the drop tests, it was determined that dry iron ore, basalt and sandstone did not change in brittleness over the temperature range studied (-25º to 25ºC). However, when the rocks were water-saturated, the highly porous sandstone became considerably more fracture-resistant upon freezing, due to "grouting" of the pores and preexisting cracks by ice. This effect was not seen for either the iron ore or the basalt, because they were considerably less porous than the sandstone. Tumble tests on both laboratory and pilot scales showed that both the addition of fines to the test charge and a reduction in temperature caused a decrease in the amount of new fines produced. This reduced fines production was the result of increased slurry viscosity when either the fines content increased or the temperature decreased.

Northwest Boring, Inc. (NWB) deployed a skinned up AVN 2000AB Microtunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) to install 7.5-foot long, 118-inch outer diameter reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) sections along an alignment between the Fremont (FRS) jacking shaft and the 3rd Avenue (3RS) receiving shaft for the Ship Canal Water Quality SCWQ Project. The alignment includes: a 67-foot long straight section, a 367-foot long curved section excavated along a 650-foot radius curve, followed by a 182-foot long straight section. This paper describes the project including planning and design, manufacturing, equipment installation in the 90-foot-deep FRS jacking shaft, egress through the secants and microtunnel operations required to complete the shaft and install the required casing pipes.

The computer program "Spike" is an "expert-rule based system" designed to fulfill two requirements. 1) acquaint unfamiliar personnel with big hole drilling techniques and 2) to stimulate the "old hands" in solving drilling problems. "Spike" will not make anyone a drilling expert The best way to understand a computer program is by example, but first some explanation of an? "expert-rule based system", As the name implies, the program tries to imitate a human expert. Unlike a normal computer program which uses a list of instructions to follow in a set order, a rule-base program has a collection of independent rules without an explicit list of things to do, one after the other. This type of program was mandatory to accommodate the ever changing situations and corrective actions that more accurately duplicate actual drilling operations and the advise of an experienced drilling expert.

A study was conducted to examine the potential of diesel emissions control strategies based on retrofitting existing power packages with exhaust aftertreatment devices and repowering with advanced power packages. The retrofit systems, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF), were evaluated individually using a US EPA tier 2 (ter 2) engine operated under four steady-state conditions and one transient cycle. The DOC effectively curtailed emissions of CO, and to some extent organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and aerosol number concentration. The DPF system offered substantially higher reductions in OC and EC mass and aerosol number concentrations. Both, the DOC and DPF achieved reductions in the aforementioned emissions without adversely affecting emissions of NO2 and nano-sized aerosols. The strategy of repowering with an advanced system was examined using a US EPA tier 4 final (tier 4f) engine equipped with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system and diesel exhaust fluid-based selective catalytic reduction system, but not with a DPF system. The tier 4f engine contributed substantially less than the tier 2 engine to the EC and OC mass, aerosol number, and CO, NO, and NO2 concentrations. The tier 4f engine was very effective in reducing aerosol mass, NO, and NO2 concentrations, but it was not equally effective in reducing aerosol number concentrations. The implementation of viable exhaust after treatment systems and advanced diesel power packages could be instrumental to the underground mining industry to secure a clean, economical, and dependable source of power for mobile equipment.

Gravity separation techniques were used in the early years to extract native metal nuggets and flakes from placer gold deposits. This was relatively easy for visible metal grains. As the size of the grain becomes smaller traditional gravity separation techniques become inadequate to recover native gold. Cyanidation was invented as a solution to the problem. According to it, gold and other precious metals are dissolved in water by sodium cyanide. The result was a drastic increase of world gold production but at the same time environmental issues were raised. In Greece gold mining has become equivalent with the absolute destruction of the environment and is under extinction. In the last years a new type of gravity equipment have been produced which create a gravitational field up to 200 G and can separate gold from gangue minerals at sizes below 50 µm. The strong gravitational field is created by centrifugal forces and the separation occurs in a fluidized bed, formed by water flow. Accumulations of finely disseminated native gold are found in the sedimentary sequence of the Flysch of the Ionian Zone. The main gold minerals are gold and electrum present as free metal flakes and micro nuggets in the size range between 5-250 µm. Test work, using the Falcon SB40 centrifugal concentrator, at the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering at the Technical University of Crete, has shown that this particular type of gold ore can be processed by gravitational methods that require no reagents and are environmentally safe.

PROJECT The Walgautunnel is the heart of a new hydro scheme in Western Austria, which is supposed to go into operation in 1984. With it's length of 21,4 km, a bored diameter of 6,25 m and an internal operating pressure of 13,5 bar it will be the largest water conducting tunnel in Austria. Even compared with some of the country's world-famous highway tunnels like 'Tauern' or 'Arlberg' it has to be regarded as a major tunneling project. Owner is the Vorarlberger Illwerke AG, a power corpo¬ration founded in 1924. In the course of the past 6o years this company developed the 'Werksgruppe Obere Ill - Lünersee', consisting of 6 major power plants and 4 large reservoirs. The installed capacity is 1.114 MW in the generating and 529 MW in the pumping mode. The total power output amounts to 1.916 GWh. The water for power generation comes from the glaciers of the Silvrettagroup, as this corner of the Austrian Alps between Vorarlberg , Tyrol and Switzerland is called. The Walgauwerk utilises all the water accumulated by the existing schemes as well as the so far unused run-off water, passing by in the river Ill. The intake to the Walgau-Tunnel is situated right beside the lower reservoir of the recently completed pump-storage plant 'Rodund II' at an elevation of 64o m above sea level. Though the head is a mere 162 m, 1 billion m3 of water will generate 356 GWh per annum. The power-output of the two Francis turbines is 86 MW.

This paper assesses the current status of computing education in ABET-accredited mining engineering programs in the United States. The hardware and software being used are reviewed. The extent to which computer applications are incorporated into mining engineering courses is also surveyed. Today's capabilities and practices are compared with those of the past to establish, trends in computing education. The concerns of mining educators regarding computers are addressed, as are views on the direction in which mining engineering programs appear to be heading in preparing students to meet the computing needs of industry.

"The deposits of the east end of the Mesabi Range cover very large areas, and consist of the same taconite that produces the hematite of the central and western Mesabi. It is not deeply covered with drift, but outcrops boldly in large masses. It is not concentrated locally into enriched bodies separated by leaner areas, but is all a fairly uniform, hard, banded, unaltered chert, carrying about 25 to 30 per cent iron as magnetite.The Mesabi Iron Company, organized by Hayden, Stone & Co., and under the direction of D. C. Jackling, has taken over these deposits and is building a Concentrating plant at the new town of Babbitt, about fourteen miles east of Mesaba, Minn. This plant is to have a capacity of 2,000 to 3,000 tons per day, and is based on the application to this low grade material of the methods which have made the so-called porphyry copper properties so successful.In 1916, an experimental mill was built in Duluth; containing full sized machinery and capable of handling from 100 to 200 tons daily. A considerable tonnage of material was concentrated here during 1916, 1917 and 1918. The work showed that the resulting product could be varied, almost at will, between 60 per cent and 70 per cent iron and .006 per cent to .030 per' cent phosphorus, and that this could be made on a large scale well within the limits of cost set by iron trade conditions. A small special cargo was sent down the lakes, late in 1918, assaying 63.27 per cent iron (natural and dry) and .008 per cent phosphorus; but it is assumed that large scale shipments will normally be of a Bessemer' grade carrying about 63 per cent iron and .020 per cent to .030 per cent phosphorus. This material is a sinter, carrying only traces of sulphur and titanium, with silica between 6 per cent and 10 , per cent, and alumina, lime, magnesia, and manganese, each below 1 per cent. Some of the iron in this sinter is hematite and some is magnetite, the percentages varying according to the treatment given on the sintering machine. Like the analyses, this hematite percentage is within reasonable control. Sinter made from finely ground magnetite has much the structure of coke, being firm yet porous, and gives good account of itself in the blast furnace."

Over the past twenty years people throughout the world, but particularly in the United States, have been taking an increasing interest in the environment, sources and causes of pollution, and pollution abatement. Air quality in the United States has been and continues to be an area of primary emphasis. In 1970, the US Congress passed the Clean Air Act and subsequently revised and strengthened it in 1977 with the issuance of the New Source Performance Standards. The Act has been further strengthened with the passage of the 1990 Amendments. By far the largest single source of sulfur dioxide (SO,) pollutants are coal fued electric generating power stations. Hence, a substantial portion of the flue gas desulfurization (FGD) research and equipment installation has been geared to the utility industry. Several competing FGD technologies were touted during the period 1970 to 1990 with varying degrees of success. Subsequently, the more successful technologies have been accepted, revised, and improved to the point that by 1991 third and fourth generation technology is available. A second area of emphasis for FGD has been coal fired industrial boilers. While individually they are much smaller than any electric utility generating station, they do represent a significant source of sulfur pollution. However, due to the size of industrial boilers and their location within industrial and educational complexes, the wet scrubber technology being employed by the utilities is not appropriate for these applications. Hence, fluidized bed combustion (FBC) technology has been developed for the industrial boilers. Since the installation of the first full scale test unit at Georgetown University, several equipment vendors have come forward with an increasing array of more sophisticated FBC units. Currently, FBC technology has matured to the point that the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), in cooperation with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), has installed an FBC system on a 250 MW test unit at the Shawnee Power Station in Kentucky.

A process has been developed for increasing the grade of chalcopyrite concentrates from about 25 percent copper to about 60 percent copper. The concentrates are treated with two steps of autoclaving and then by flotation. Because of the lower associated weight, copper in the concentrates could be shipped and smelted at less cost than untreated concentrates. Use of the process can also increase overall yield from an orebody if a lower grade concentrate is sent to enrichment than would be sent to a smelter. Potential applications of the process would be for treating concentrates that must be transported a long distance for smelting or for treating concentrates so as to increase the capacity of a smelter.

In vertical airways, falling material - solids-or water - may cause undesirable disturbances in the ventilation in the airway itself and also in neig¬bouring airways unless precautions are taken to stabilize the air flow. Such cases can occur, for example, - in shaft sinking by drilling from a pilot hole, - during the filling up of shafts, and - during the introduction of water into shafts in the case of mine fires. In an airway with upward ventilation the falling material will reduce the air flow and may even re¬verse its direction. In an airway with downward ventilation the air flow can only increase, but a reversal of the direction of ventilation may result in a parallel airway. These disturbances in the normal ventilation are undesirable as it must be the aim to have ventilation that is stable in quantity and direction throughout a mine. In order to be able to prepare suitable stabilization measures one must know the pressure generated by the falling material; this pressure will henceforth be called "aeromotive" pressure. The main factors determining the influence of falling material on the ventilation are - the amount of falling material and its height of fall, - the cross sectional area of the airway, - the pressure. difference prevailing in it, - the-position of the. airway in the ventilation. network, - the air velocity, and - other parameters, e. g. the density and grain size of the falling material. To determine the aeromotive pressure-measurements have been made underground during the sinking and filling of shafts and systematic studies have been carried out during the supply of water into a staple shaft. The present paper deals first with some fundamental theoretical considerations and then describes the measuring arrangements and the results of the series of experiments that have been carried out.

The stresses in the heads and shell of a grinding mill are largely dependent on the bending moment produced by the trunnion bearing. By using spherical roller bearings in a special narrow housing a short moment arm is obtained and the bending moment is reduced. For large mills a hydrostatic shoe bearing which also gives a short arm, can be used. Spherical roller bearings also require less maintenance and have a long service life. As the bearings are grease lubricated an automatic lubricator is used instead of an oil lube system. Service data from two Swedish mining companys confirm the fact that the above arrangements provide a long service life.

The day after I reached New York, on January 30th, John Ryan of Anaconda told me where they wanted me to go. Late in 1916 the Russian Czar, desperate for money and supplies with which to carry on his unhappy share In the first World War, sent emissaries to the United States to see if our great mining companies might be interested in trying to find mines and to bring them to production in the millions of acres of the Imperial Estates in Russia and Siberia. It looked like a long chance as no one knew whether or where there might be important ore bodies. Even if they found them it might be a hopeless task to equip them under wartime conditions But the American copper companies had plenty of money and they were used to taking risks. They made a supersecret agreement with the Czar's deputies to send an exploring expedition to Russia at once I never learned the names of the other companies but Anaconda was to man- age the venture. Horace Winchell, then the leading mine geologist In the United States, was to be in charge of operations. Charles Janin, an eminent placer and dredge expert, was to study chances for producing gold and platinum. Though at 33 years of age I was much younger than the others, I was chosen to hunt for copper and other valuable metals. Charles Boynton, a business man who had lived in Russia and had married an attractive Russian woman, was to join the party and carry on any necessary financial or diplomatic affairs. He had gone on ahead to arrange for our reception Finally a graduate student from Ann Arbor named Steinberg was to go along as Interpreter. We soon found out that if his Russian was no better than his English his interpretlng couldn't be trusted too much I knew nothing about the millions of square miles In Russia and Siberia, and even less about what mineral deposits might be found, but I was delighted at the prospect. Up to the middle of 19 14, when I had reached what seemed like the advanced age of 30, I had enjoyed far more than my share of success and a lot of minor adventure. But the exciting experiences in distant lands that Soldiers of Fortune had made me long for had not yet materialized. And I had not accomplished the two goals that Mrs. Hughes' geography class at Belmont had set up for me. They were to see In its tropical home the enormous yellow bill of the toucan bird and to ride on a straw "bolsa" on Lake Titicaca. These aims were gratified In the next five years that were the epitome of "romance" in its German connotation of facts seen through the rosy glasses of imagination. Dr. Louis Ricketts was to a large extent responsible for my opportunity. I had been lucky enough to do a lot of work for and with the Doctor, as he was affectionately called by the mining men of the southwest. My association was in connection with his work with John Greenway on the complex metallurgical problems at Ajo. Soon after the Ajo investigation Ricketts had been made chief consultant for the Anaconda Copper Co. When Anaconda decided to undertake a cam- paign of exploration of the west coast of South America Dr. Ricketts thought of me and arranged with Greenway to give me a leave of absence from my Calumet and Arizona job. It took three days in New York in June 1914 to arrange the expedition. Ben Thayer, executive vice president of Anaconda, did most of the planning and I was to report to him. T.H. France, a 45-year-old mining engineer who had been driven out of Mexico by the Madera Revolution, was to accompany and help me. He spoke excellent Spanish and his years of Mexican experience had taught him how to get along with Latin Americans. He went ahead to Bolivia, our first target, to get an idea of the country and the problems. This was lucky as I hardly knew where Bolivia was.
