Atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) is an improvement in coal-fired boiler design that offers several advantages over conventional boilers. AFC can meet sulfur and nitrogen oxide emission regulations without the need for add-on flue gas treatment equipment. The relatively low combustion temperature inhibits ash melting, thus reducing slagging and fouling which can, in turn, increase a boiler's fuel flexibility. This report discusses, in general, AFBC technology and, in particular, progress at the 20-MW Pilot Plant built by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) at its Shawnee Power Station near Paducah, Kentucky.

"INTRODUCTION Istanbul is a unique megalopolis connecting two continents. Population growth and economic development require permanent solutions and continuous investments on the transportation infrastructure. While the average population growth rate in Turkey is around 1.3% per annum, Istanbul is growing at an even faster rate of more than 1.5%. Even more striking is the fact that car ownership in Istanbul is increasing 5% a year, which is four times faster than the population growth. Although Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) has worked persistently to improve the quantity and quality of the public transportation system in the city through, in particular, extending the available rail system network, the need for extra roads has always fallen behind demand. To make things worse, Istanbul is divided by the Bosphorus Strait, the large waterway connecting the Black Sea to the north and Marmara Sea to the south, which leads to the Mediterranean. This waterway is crossed via two suspension bridges, the Bosphorus Bridge built in 1973 and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge built in 1988. Current daily traffic across the bridges is around 450,000 vehicles per day. Ever increasing cross-Bosphorus traffic demands require other routes to be in place a soon as possible. While a third bridge farther north is currently under construction, yet another tunnel crossing is coming to the end of construction and is planned to be in service by December 2016. Being implemented under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, Istanbul Strait Road Tunnel Project (ISRTP, the Project) has been under the spotlight not only because of its distinctive technical characteristics but also because of its robust business model, exacting financial and legal arrangements, diverse stakeholders and challenging organizational management structure. The following paragraphs offer an overall view of the Project from inception to where it stands now and extend to the imminent operational phase, touching lightly on all major aspects of this challenging journey."

GENERAL INTRODUCTION The object of this paper is to discuss those aspects of open pit mine design which are affected by geotechnical factors. The temptation exists for some practitioners of geotechnical engineering to believe that this relatively new engineering discipline is the ‘be all and end all of mining.’ In the opinion of the authors, this is fallacious but, as our ability to put numbers to the behaviour of rocks and soils improves, it is clear that geotechnical engineering will become an integral and important part of designing and operationg mines success- fully. Open pit mines in the context of this paper also includes open cast mines, where the 'ore" is extracted and the waste material is immediately replaced or ' backfilled in the mined portion of the pit. Open pit mines operating today move from very small tonnages a day to in excess of 400,000 tons per day. Several mines are operating and are being designed to capital expenditure for such projects in some cases exceeds five hundred million dollars and in a few cases will exceed one billion dollars. The size of this investment means that financing will have to be provided from banks or joint partnerships. This financial environment means that planning will be carefully scrutinized by experienced representatives of financial institutions or other mining companies. All too often a project has been put in jeopardy because the personal desire of one or two men to make a project proceed has caused incomplete planning or perhaps in some instances deliberately leading observers 'down the garden path.’ In our opinion the day is rapidly arriving when the quality, logic, practicability and completeness of the planning will make the difference between securing financing or not and, in the cases of existing open pit mines, of the difference between survival and closure.

"Experience from Australia has identified what is referred to as non-conventional surface subsidence behaviour. This occurs under irregular surface topography, resulting in valley closure, valley floor uplift or “upsidence”, and far-field horizontal movements – even occurring beyond conventional “angle of draw” limits. This paper discusses such behaviour recently observed in Pennsylvania and focuses on the 2005 case of Duke Lake Dam in Ryerson Station State Park. In July 2005, there was a significant increase in water leakage through a number of growing cracks in the dam leading to the dam being breached to avoid an uncontrolled failure. An underground longwall mine was located approximately 900ft to the north, mining at depths of 330 – 720ft. Investigations (including a subsequent ground movement monitoring program) found a range of evidence in the vicinity suggesting that valley closure and far-field horizontal movements may have occurred resulting from the adjacent mining. The paper discusses the phenomenon of non-conventional subsidence behaviour and the Ryerson State Park case study, including an assessment of mining, geology and subsidence impacts and suggested ground behavioural mechanisms. INTRODUCTION Non-Conventional Subsidence The conventional understanding of coal mine subsidence on which most current subsidence understanding and prediction techniques are based, includes the concept of angle of draw which effectively limits the lateral extent of subsidence effects and impacts. Within this zone – above and marginally beyond the boundary of mining – downward vertical subsidence is the dominant component, together with localised horizontal movements towards the mined region, with related tilts and strains. However, more recent experience from Australia over the last two or three decades has identified what is referred to as non-conventional surface subsidence behaviour. This is found to occur in areas of irregular surface topography or variable terrain, and is characterised by phenomena such as valley closure, valley floor uplift or upsidence, and far-field horizontal movements, all of which can occur beyond the conventional angle of draw limits. Originally, the term solution mining applied to a dissolution, washing, or "brining" of soluble salts such as halite (common table salt), potash or trona. After the mid-sixties, however, the definition has been expanded to include heap and dump leaching, in-place (in situ) leaching, removal of oil from tar sands, extraction of sulfur from deep wells by the Frasch process and the recovery of metalliferous solutions from geothermal sources. Solution mining is also known as borehole, non-shaft, or chemical mining; the extraction of soluble mineral values from a variety of ores using appropriate solvents and chemicals. Solution mining frequently involves chemical changes; for example, copper usually goes into solution as copper sulfate, gold and silver as a cyanide compound, and uranium as a sulfate or uranyl tricarbonate. The valuable constituent is removed from the solid body of the ore by mass transfer to a aqueous solution.

Decision-making in exploration deals with experience, knowledge, and sometimes faith, but very often financing and profit, mineral resource aspects, employment, and general political ambitions are parts of the scene. At one end of this spectrum, there is the prospector and his decision on the actual project. The exploration business now expands from its pioneering phase for the benefit of a single company to a wider spectrum which includes the benefit of the large mining consortium and a national development program. Its objectives are also to maintain employment and to favor long-term stability in a mining district or a mining company. The prospector then has new aspects and questions to consider such as, what to do in mining districts where there is a shortage of ore resources but there are still useful investments in mines, processing plants, etc. To analyze the exploration process, therefore, seems to be of great importance in a time of rapidly changing conditions. As in other areas of complex decision-making, for example, in the fields of investments, of production, and of the armed forces, computers most certainly have an important role to play in future exploration decision-making systems. However, we must first analyze our own business as closely as possible to find out what kind of information we need, i.e., why we recommend an exploration program as a good or a poor one. An important part of the debate about exploration is the case study. Case studies on exploration are few and most of those written are only about successful exploration programs. Where are the case studies of the failures and the not so successful programs? Every prospector knows that the majority of exploration projects fail. Consequently, the most important experience seems to be hidden in the failures.

This paper will explore the technology behind and applications of smart motor control centers (MCCs) being used today in mineral processing facilities. The two technologies to be discussed are solid-state motor controllers that can be installed in MCCs and the complementary digital communication networks that can transmit operational parameters of the solid-state devices to the supervisory system. The toughness and reliability of solid-state technologies have led to a dramatic increase in their usage throughout the mining industry. Products such as solid-state motor protectors, controllers, and variable frequency drives have demonstrated greater flexibility and performance in a variety of applications than their electromechanical and mechanical counterparts. The three key trends apparent in the solid-state devices are: 1. A shift to smaller, smarter, more integrated devices, which allows a single solid-state device to serve the purpose of multiple electromechanical devices but in a much smaller form factor. 2. Distribution of control logic in motor control devices rather than conveyed through a hard wired connection to a central automation system. 3. Embedded network communication that allows supervisory systems to have an expanded view into critical loads and sensors. In applications, the use of smart actuators and sensors with integral local intelligence and communication allow a supervisory controller to send high level commands and let the smart device coordinate its own work The ability of smart field devices to return noncontrolled, nonpoled information opens a whole array of new capabilities for preventive maintenance and diagnostics and forms the basis for an effective motor management program. The smart motor control devices this paper will explore are the smart motor protectors (SMP), smart motor controllers (SMC), and variable frequency drives (VFD).

Accidents that resulted in 16 deaths in three West Virginia coal mines, two in Kentucky and one in Utah have government and industry re-evaluating current safety regulations. Even though U.S. mines continue to improve on their safety records, the deaths reminded the industry and state and federal agencies that mining remains a dangerous business. Even so, data from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) show that new technologies and a highly trained workforce has allowed the nation’s coal mines to increase production while providing safer workplaces. Since 1970, coal production at U.S. mines has increased by about 83 percent. During the same period, fatal injuries have fallen by 92 percent. And more than half of the U.S. coal mines operate each year without a lost-time injury. In 2005, there were 22 deaths in U.S. mines, a record low.

Since it is becoming increasingly important, from an environmental viewpoint, to minimize blast vibrations induced in urban dwellings and improve rock fragmentation in order to reduce costs with loading, transportation crushing and grinding, a cooperative research project was established between Companhia Vale do Rio Doce - CVRD and the Blasting Research Group in the Department of Mining Engineering at Escola de Minas - UFOP to investigate which elements interfere on ground vibration, air blast, flyrock and rock fragmentation related to rock blasting activities at Conceição Mine, located in Itabira city, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This research also involved development of a new explosives formulation in order to minimize the total blasting cost. This paper presents the general scheme of the research running from May 1995 to May 1997 and a summary of the results obtained in the field tests that were carried out in this mine.

INTRODUCTION Shotcrete behavior observed in subway tunnel construction in the U. S. has been primarily in blocky or blocky and seamy rock in which rock loads develop from the self weight of individual rock blocks that tend to loosen from the wall and roof of the opening. Such conditions can be classed as loosening ground, in contrast to squeezing ground in which high pressures are generated on the tunnel lining with time as the ground creeps under the natural ground stresses. In the philosophy often associated with the New Austrian Tunneling method, emphasis is placed on the use of shotcrete and other support elements in squeezing, highly stressed ground, in which the support system is designed to allow controlled movements so that high lining stresses do not develop. The wide use of bulk ANFO in surface coal mines is questionable in our energy conscious environment. At many locations, bulk ANFO is not the proper economic selection. Water conditions, energy requirements, waste and spillage, and vibration control are factors too often overlooked in the proper choice of blasting agents. Cost savings over 20% have been realized by converting bulk ANFO to packaged blasting agents. Future trends suggest greater concern for energy conservation in blasting will limit bulk ANFO applications and promote packaged products where quality can be maximized, waste and spillage eliminated, and water compatibility in wet areas assured.

Although not generally recognized, Arizona has rock salt deposits unique in the United States. This uniqueness stems from a combination of two factors: (1) relatively youthful geologic age and (2) nonmarine origin. Although Arizona shares one deposit with Nevada (Figure 1, No. I) there are three others within the State (Nos. 2, 4, 5) that are believed to be both late Cenozoic in age (less than 15 million years) and nonmarine in origin. The only other recognized nonmarine salt deposits in the U.S. are much older, being in the early Cenozoic (Eocene) Green River Formation of Colorado and Wyoming. According to Johnson and Gonzales (1), the remaining rock salt deposits in the United States are marine and either Paleozoic or Mesozoic in age. Of the seven localities shown in Figure 1, six in the Basin and Range geologic province are believed to represent nomarine late Cenozoic phenomena and one (No. 7) in the Colorado Plateau geologic province is Paleozoic (Permian) in age and marine in origin. The following comments are intended to update the general geologic highlights of these deposits and to summarize the nature of their present utilization.

Miami Copper Company has used conveyor belts underground since 1947, At that time, the draw level for a portion of the orebody was only 25 feet above the haulage level To get the main haulage drifts as far away as practical from under the stoping area, 301, belt conveyors were used for lateral transfer, If the haulage drift was kept in good ground., a satisfactory draw of these stopes could be effected in that repairs to the conveyor drifts could be accomplished while drawing ore from the stopes. Some 7,400,000 tons of ore were mined with the 301d belt conveyor at a belt cost of approximately $0,004 per ton of ore. When the mining plan for a new section of the mine was laid. out in 1953, it was decided to use belts to collect the ore from the higher draw levels, and. move the ore laterally to centrally located concrete ore passes for transfer to the main haulage level (See Cut #1), The final plans used belt conveyors too collect from 3 stopes: on the 570 level, 2 stopes on the 720 level, and one stope on the 900 level. The six stopes to be mined in this manner would produce about 8 million tons of ore, and the sequence of mining was such that not more than four 400 feet conveyors would be in use at one time, Four conveyors using 36 inch, 4 ply belting were designed by the mine engineering office and fabricated at the mine shop, so that no piece was longer than 10 feet, and. the heaviest piece was the 25 horsepower motor, The head drive section, and the tail-pulley-takeup section were of bolted construction so they could be broken down for easing moving, Due to the size of the mine openings, the belt had to be transported into the mine in 400 feet rolls, requiring two splices for an installed belt. A torque arm speed reducer was used with a V -belt drive which made it possible to change the speed of the conveyor by changing the diameter of the V-belt pulley (See Cut #2).

John C. Greenway was responsible for much of my success in the seven years from what I called the end of my apprenticeship in exploration until I entered the Army in World War I. I first met Green- way on my return from Promontorio and, as he was replacing Powell, he was to be my boss. Even at first glance you couldn't help liking and trusting him. He was tall, well built, and erect-an old Yale athlete. After college he became a captain in the Rough Riders and a friend of Theodore Roosevelt, distinguishing himself in the Cuban campaign. He made good friends in all ranks of the Rough Riders, some later becoming leaders of industry and others following Greenway where-ever he went. After the Spanish War Greenway worked for iron mining companies around the Great Lakes and when the directors decided that Calumet and Arizona needed a new manager the ones who were also prominent in Oliver Iron Mining Co. selected Greenway It was a lucky choice for Greenway and for me. He became the best manager among those who ran the big copper mines He was open-minded in encouraging discussion and even opposition-until he made up his mind. Then, in military fashion, everyone must follow his decision without question. I think this is an essential of good management. Unfortunately a few did not feel this way and they had to leave. It was characteristic of those times that respect for the boss was so great that in the 16 years in which he was one of my best friends I, like all under him, always called him "Mr. Greenway." Soon after he arrived Greenway asked the leading mine operators in the southwest, Dr. Louis D. Ricketts and James S. Douglas, son of the Dr. James Douglas who had made Phelps Dodge great, to do special work for Calumet and Arizona. I found later that the object of the study was to determine the terms on which the half-dozen Warren District properties of Calumet and Arizona were to be joined in one

History The breaking and shaping of rock was one of man's earliest occupations. In the Paleolithic Age long before the dawn of history, arrow¬smiths and the makers of stone axes, hammers, knives, scrapers, spears, and borers were highly respected members of society. In early historical times stones for building blocks, roads, and city walls were shaped by slaves and convicts, who also did most of the mining. However, great artists erected beautiful stone sculptures, while gifted architects planned imposing temples and monuments. Until well into the 19th century nearly all rock was broken laboriously by hand. The small rock required by John MacAdam for his macadamized roads in England in the 1820s was produced by women and boys seated alongside the roadside with hand hammers and legs wrapped with rags. Eli Whitney Blake, a nephew of the Eli Whitney who invented the cotton gin, developed the first successful jaw crusher before 1870. The gyratory conical crusher soon followed. Comparative tests established its large capacity advantage over the jaw crusher, as well as its greater cost for a given feed size. Both types have been in use for more than 100 years. Crushing rolls appeared before 1900. Thomas A. Edison made very large diameter rolls which were excessively long; they failed because of shaft deflection. Various types of disk crushers and edge runner rolls appeared about this time. The older methods of reducing rock were adaptations of other processes. The stamp battery of dropping weights effected crushing by simulating heavy hammer blows; the much earlier arrastre, in which heavy stones were dragged in a circular path over the ore by animal power, came from the prehistoric method of grinding grain between two rubbing stones, while the jaw crusher was adapted from simple squeezing devices. But the tumbling grinding mill was not just an adaptation; it was an invention, because it required thinking on a somewhat higher order-there was no prototype. Its nearest antecedents were probably the small closed tumbling drums used in England more than a century ago for cleaning and polishing small iron castings. The date of the first tumbling mill actually used to grind rock is unknown, but it was later than the American Civil War (1861¬1865). It was almost certainly a closed or batch mill in which rock was placed and rotated until it reached the desired particle size. It could have been operated either wet or dry. The first published refer¬ence to such a batch mill was one introduced by Alsing in England (1870) for the grinding of calcined flints for pottery work.21 There are several rather indefinite reports of grinding mills in the early 1890s, including an overflow ball mill in the Helena and Livingstone reduction plant in Montana which may have been the first of its kind. 11 Many of the first mills, which were called tube mills, used hard rock both as grinding media and as mill lining. The rock used was preferably stone from the Normandy and Danish beaches, when it could be imported. This remarkable siliceous stone was already widely used for grist mills throughout America, and its resistance to wear was greatly respected. The decade of the 1890s saw the development of tumbling mills with continuous feed and discharge and their extension into different industrial uses. By 1895 some experience had been accumulated. Iron grinding balls were being tested and the proper speed of rotation was being determined. The Clark Patent tube mill was featured in an E. P. Allis bulletin of 1890, which may have been the first published description of a tube mill. More than 1,000 Gates tube mills had been built by Allis-Chalmers before 1913. Many of these were used in gold mining, espe¬cially in South Africa. The 5 x 22-ft size was particularly favored for grinding portland cement; the use of tumbling mills in the manufac¬ture of cement began about 1900. A great deal of attention was paid to the mill lining. Metal was then relatively expensive, and the general approach was to trap some of the rock grinding media into mill lining pockets. This rock would then absorb the wear and protect the metal lining. In the first ten years of the 20th century there were several different types of pocketed liners, with different manufacturers advancing the superior claims of their patented arrangements. The Osborne liner, developed in South Africa, was probably the most successful. 21 Another item which attracted much attention was size classifica¬tion within the mill and in ancillary equipment attached to the mill and rotating with it. The Krupp type, with interior screens protected inside the mill lining, was developed quite early in Germany, possibly before 1890. The Dorr reciprocating rake classifier (1907) had not yet been invented, and many strange and impractical screening and classifying devices were proposed. In these unsatisfactory machines the two separate processes of size reduction and classification were combined into one operation. It was many years before recognition came that a machine is most efficient when it is designed for one specific purpose. There was much industrial wastage before the opera¬tions of grinding and classification were finally separated. After 1900 the grinding of portland cement raw material and of cement clinker required large numbers of tumbling mills. Most of the raw material was then ground dry. This was also the heyday of gold mining. The old stamp mills that were used in great numbers for grinding gold ore did not grind sufficiently fine to liberate all of the gold, and the new tube mills were installed following the stamps. After 1910 larger diameter tum¬bling mills with larger grinding media were developed. These could receive the finely crushed ore directly, and the inefficient stamp batter¬ies were gradually eliminated. The Rand in South Africa was the greatest gold producer, treating immense quantities of rather low-grade but consistently free milling gold ore. The first tumbling mills, or tube mills, went into operation there in 1904. They were so successful that within a few years no new stamp batteries were installed in the district, even though old ones continued to pound away until after 1950.3 The early tube mills on the Rand all employed Normandy or Danish pebbles, which had to be imported at considerable expense. Their reported wear was as low as 4 lb per ton ground. 4 Many of the mills were lined with the same tough Danish stone cemented into place, while others used the pocketed steel Osborne liner. It was in 1907 on the Rand that an important test was made using hard native ore for grinding media in place of the expensive imported pebbles. 3 This ore, called banket, did not wear as well as the renowned Danish pebbles, but the cost per ton of grinding was definitely reduced. Many of the tube mills on the Rand were soon grinding with native ore. This was the beginning of the development now called autogenous grinding, in which the ore grinds itself. This is treated under a separate heading. See Subsection 3C, Chapter 4. Gold mining was important in America also, and its grinding history follows that of the Rand. Danish pebbles were replaced by native ore in Santa Gertrudis, Mexico, in 1913, 4 and in Consolidated Gold Fields, Nevada, in 1914. 5 Other properties followed suit. However, it gradually became apparent that the capacity of a given mill could be almost doubled if rock grinding media were re¬placed by cast iron or steel grinding balls. In order to increase plant grinding capacity many rock media mills were converted to iron grind¬ing media in the second decade of the present century. In some mills the motor size was doubled; other mills were cut in two and another motor was provided for the second half. Grinding mills began to assume a more modern appearance. Crushing rolls were formerly much used following crushing in jaw or gyratory crushers and preceding grinding in ball mills. How¬ever, the roll surfaces wore rapidly, and skilled maintenance was required to obtain even wear. Rod mills could take feed of the same crusher product size and reduce it finer. The first rod mill was con¬structed by Mine and Smelter Supply Co. and was tested in Canada

Industrial flotation of sulfide ores is 80 years old. It has gone through many advances to date. However most flotation operations are still struggling to improve performance, which as a worldwide average is at the 90% level. What can be done to push the ceiling to 95% or better without performing finer primary grind, nor without duplicating flotation plant capacity? Such "unique task" can be performed by the low volume high capacity new flotation equipment known as the JAMESON CELL, when used as, "post-scavenger" of final plant tails. Improved efficiencies are obtained mainly from two cases: -Particles which never contacted a bubble. -Particles sheared-off by cell turbulence due to reduced number of hydrophobic sites. The application reverses conventional trend of using large volume mechanical cells by trade-in with smaller efficient equipment: resulting in reduced capital expenditures and operating costs. Outstanding "pre-rougher" applications are also presented.

Namibia is one of Africa's newest nations. A German colony until 1915, it then became a South African protectorate until 1990, when it gained independence after an armed struggle that lasted more than two decades. However, no trace of past bitterness can be found today in the capital, Windhoek, or in the countryside. Namibia is now one of the safest parts of Africa. Namibia's industrial base and infrastructure have been untouched by war. Swapo, the ruling party, has embarked on a successful policy of reconciliation and economic development. The GNP per capita is a surprising $1500 (from the World Bank), one of the highest in Africa. Namibia's population stands at 1.3 million, including about 100,000 whites. Namibia is a very sparsely populated country (1.7 inhabitants per km2). About 70% of the people are farmers. Namibia has a surface area of 824,232 km2 (318,261 sq miles), about the size of France and Germany combined. The semi-arid climate and generally flat morphology make the country well suited to mineral exploration. About 40% of the country presents abundant rock outcrops. The rest is buried under the Kalahari sands. However, this cover in most of the country hardly exceeds 200 m (655 ft), and Australian technology has shown that large mineral deposits (Roxby Downs) can nowadays be found at even greater depths. Mining is Namibia's largest industry. In 1991, it accounted for 22% of the country's GDP, about 70% to 80% of its exports by value and 25% of internally generated government revenues. Starting up a fan or modifying its setting point either by rotational speed variations or blade angle changes, obviously results in new ventilation conditions in the network, which is, of course, the object of the operation. However, since transient phenomena may then occur, particularly in complex networks, there may be a need to simulate these situations prior to any action. This is all the more true, if we are dealing with a multiple interactive fan sys- tem. Simulations with a transient model have shown that the flow in certain airways could be temporarily reversed due to the pres- sure variations that reach both its ends with a different time lag. This phenomenon may cause dangerous situations to occur in cases of fire or outburst of methane. It is also true that the air flow could be reversed in secondary and less powerful fans, while still rotating in the normal direction. The study and the experimental investigation of the extension of the reverse flow characteristic is therefore justified from two points of view : • a numerical simulation model for transient flow conditions must be capable of handling temporary reversed flows, and thus have appropriate fan characteristic curves available over the entire operating domain; • while operating fans, reversed flows should be avoided or at least reduced. Therefore, the design of start-up procedures or real time control algorithms should take these phenomena into account. A particular interesting application is the operating of two fans in parallel. In order to investigate experimentally the characteristic curves of a fan under reversed flow conditions a small scale model was built. This facility was designed in such a manner that it was possible to carry out experiments concerning flow reversions and to try out sequential start-up procedures for two fans in parallel.

The Ireland Mine is located some seven miles South of Moundsville West Virginia, along the bank of the Ohio River. We are mining the Pittsburgh #8 seam. This seam is approximately 60" in thickness, and is immediately overlain by some 10 feet of a conglommerate material. The roof is difficult to control, due to the fact that it frequently is composed of substances not hard enough to be held together with 6-foot roof bolts. In many cases, we must use 10-foot roof bolts, in order to get bolt anchorage in the limestone above the conglommerate. Due to the elasticity of the limestone and its tendency to bend rather than to break, we have been unable to maintain a pillar line. Thus, we have found it necessary to mine by the room and pillar system. Belt haulage is used on room entries to automatic loading stations, thence into 15-ton mine cars, controlled at the loading point by car spotters. The maximum belt length is 2,000 feet. Rail haulage to the slope-bottom dump is by 27- and 50-ton locomotives. The mine produces coal two shifts per day, with 7 production crews on each shift. Mine and machinery maintenance is performed on the Midnight shift. We handle an average of 660 tons per machine shift.
