Resource figures for bentonite clays are generally based on stratigraphic, sedimentary geologic data and drilling and sampling. Estimates of bentonite resources and/or reserves commonly found in the literature report on bentonite occurrences in specific localities or areas but none on any documented comprehensive estimates of bentonite resources. From 1974 thru 1977 the Bureau of Land Management conducted extensive studies of the resources of commercial grade bentonite in the three state region. These investigations consisted of: 1. Stratigraphic and geologic sampling with supplemental drilling data, followed by geostatistical analysis. 2. Data compiled from a systematic search of county and state records on mining locations, leases and acreage filed for bentonite. Estimates of resources of commercial grade bentonite using industry parameters were calculated from these data sources. It is concluded that there exists from 1.5 to 2.4 billion tons of in-place bentonite in Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota. Assuming a 5 percent annual growth rate for the industry, this would indicate a life of 62 to 73 years.

The notion of achieving limitless productivity produces peak levels of enthusiasm in today's mining leaders. Highly-productive mines do not happen by chance --they are created by progressive leaders. The quest for productivity improvement, exclusively through capital investment and technological advances, is an incomplete process. Improvement, through capital and technology, is often not achieved because we fail to energize the true potential and commitment in our employees.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop safe practices for the use of shotcrete as ground support in underground mines, particularly mines operating in weak host rock. As part of this research, tests were conducted with a commercial poly-fiber reinforced shotcrete mix to develop a practical means of measuring shotcrete adhesion strength. Full-scale tests were conducted in a test frame equipped with concrete panels having three distinct surface roughness profiles. Adhesion test fixtures either embedded or epoxied in the shotcrete were overcored into the underlying concrete, and direct tensile tests were conducted to determine the bond strength of the shotcrete cores to the substrate after a selected shotcrete curing interval (1, 3, 7, 14, 28, or 90 days). Measured adhesion strengths typically ranged from 0.5 to 2.0 MPa depending on the curing age of the shotcrete samples. This paper presents the results of these tests, describes the portable test system components, and addresses some of the design issues encountered in the development of a rugged and reliable method for determining shotcrete adhesion strength in underground mines.

"The current paper presents the results of a study designed to explore the types of practices that are fundamentally important to developing and maintaining comprehensive risk-based health and safety management systems (HSMS) in mining organizations. Eighteen practicing health and safety (H&S) executives, managers, and professionals from a variety of mining commodities were asked to assess the fundamental importance of 20 distinct elements and 133 different practices assembled from a review of several HSMS consensus standards. The research approach assumes that developing and maintaining a robust HSMS requires unwavering attention to activities designed to either: 1) directly contribute to a risk management system’s plan-do-check-act cycle; or 2) build an organization’s internal infrastructure without which the cycle cannot be sustained. The results of this study suggest that the following areas require consistent focus and attention: Leadership Development; Accountability; Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Development; System Coordination; Culture Enhancement; Behavior Optimization; and Risk Management Studies. Each element and its corresponding top-ranked and top-rated practices are discussed.INTRODUCTION Since the time of the Industrial Revolution, occupational health and safety (H&S) management has been a topic of practitioner thought and academic inquiry (1). In the U.S., decades of regulation and research have resulted in a surplus of prescriptive information (techniques, tools, approaches, standards, programs, practices, policies, etc.). With an abundance of such information, a simple H&S solution to address a problem in the U.S. mining industry may seem straightforward. Counter to this assertion, however, some evidence suggests that the abundance of information may create complexity and cause confusion in the minds of organizational leaders and H&S managers, ultimately discouraging the voluntary pursuit of a sound approach (2). In line with this perspective, in 2006 the U.S. National Mining Association (NMA) formed an independent commission to examine H&S management issues within the mining industry. The findings of the commission called for the mining industry to adopt a risk-based management paradigm. In the presentation of its findings, the commission stated that “…every mine should employ a sound risk-analysis process, should conduct a risk analysis, and should develop a management plan to address significant hazards identified by the analysis” (3). Grounded in the well-known plan-do-check-act cycle, the recommended risk management system allows for mines to ground strategic management choices in their mine-specific hazards and risk profiles"

Joplin, one of the most famous zinc mining camps of a bygone era, is today experiencing a healthy growth in manufacturing enterprises. Manufacturing requires water, and knowledge of its availability and quality often is the main factor in location of industry. For this reason in January 1964, on the suggestion of the former State Geologist, Dr. Thomas R. Beveridge, a study of the water resources of the Joplin District was undertaken as a cooperative effort of the Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources now under the direction of Dr. William C. Hayes and the U. S. Geological Survey. The project area is in southwestern Missouri on the Springfield Plateau and is bordered on the west and north by the Osage Plains of Kansas and Western Missouri, (fig. l). Upland altitudes rise from 900 feet above sea level in the west to 1400 feet in the east. The countryside is rolling to moderately hilly and much is excellent farmland.

The gold ores in the Jerritt Canyon district have been recognized as refractory since they were first encountered by FMC geologists in 1976. Upon obtaining managing rights as joint venture partner, Freeport McMoRan Inc. developed an operating plan featuring carbon-in-leach gold recovery techniques for the oxide portion of the ores and a patented sulphide oxidation step followed by chlorination for treating the organic carbon constituents of the refractory ores prior to CIL gold recovery. The plant was successfully started up in 1981 with the first gold poured on July 4, 1981. Initial plant throughput was designed to be 2495 MTPD (2750 STPD) total through the dual processing trains.

Friction Rock Stabilizers, trade name II Sp 1 it Sets'" have been under research and development by the author and the Ingersoll-Rand Company since February of 1973. The United States Bureau of Mines and the Mines Enforcement and Safety Administration as well as many mining companies have cooperated in field testing the device. Split Set rock anchors are distinctively different from the widely used mechanical rock anchors or fully grouted rock anchors. They control ground movement internally in a manner that allows controlled deformation during the early phase of the ground reaction curve but then, as secondary creep develops, anchorage per unit length increases and they serve to strengthen and stabilize the opening for long periods of time. The history of research and development of the Scott Split Set rock anchor system with accompanying laboratory and field test data is presented in this paper.

That?s automation in the truest sense of the word, but we call it automatic and think nothing of it. The use of diesel engines in underground hard-rock mines dates back to the late 1940s. For the first several years, they were used only occasionally, being limited to a few metal mines that experimented with crawler¬mounted front-end loaders, tractor-trailer hauling units, a few tractors for drill-compressor mounts, and utility cleanup machines. By the mid-1950s, track loaders had become commonplace in limestone mines and uranium mines on the Colorado Plateau in the United States, as well as in Canada. Use of crawler-mounted tractors as drill and compressor mounts also increased. By the end of the 1950s, rubber-tired loaders and some haulers began to replace the track-type machines and rail-mounted cars that had been in use. About 1960, the rubber-tired machines brought about a new era of underground mining mobility and flexibility, centered on a method commonly known as "trackless mining." Ultimately, many of the underground rail-type systems for loading and hauling were replaced by the trackless mining technique. ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS The size and nature of mineral deposits, plus ground control techniques, historically had dictated small open¬ings to the surface from many underground mines. The small mine openings led to the development of special rubber-tired loaders and haulers designed specifically for access through the small openings. However, some mines, particularly those in massive mineral deposits, are able to excavate and maintain very large openings, and some use modified room-and-pillar systems. With the large mine openings, the use of larger, more produc¬tive equipment such as that commonly found in surface mining becomes economical. In fact, productivity gen¬erally increases at a more pronounced rate than machine size increases because many of the larger machines were designed for heavy-duty shot-rock applications in surface mines and construction sites where the handling of blasted rock is common. Combining greater productivity often inherent in larger machines, with reduced downtime resulting from using fully developed machines with fast parts and service backup, some mine operators have been able to reduce material handling costs appreciably while reduc¬ing manpower requirements for operators and main¬tenance men. Large mine openings increase the amount of rock that must be handled in the development work, and they sometimes increase the dilution in stopes or rooms, de¬pending upon the dimensions of the ore zone. Providing adequate space for the unrestricted operation of large surface mining machines could, therefore, lead to more waste segregation and handling costs. It could also cause greater ore dilution that would result in a lower grade of ore being delivered to the processing plant. The tradeoffs between opposing cost factors must be reconciled and balanced to achieve the best overall cost of the crude ore, concentrates, or product. EQUIPMENT MODIFICATIONS Loaders and haulers designed for surface mining are seldom used underground in their standard con¬figurations without some modifications. If done, the modifications generally are made by the equipment dealer and/or the user, and the modifications usually include one or more of the following items: 1) The exhaust stack is lowered, and its direction is changed. Usually, it is repositioned horizontally to the rear, or it is fed into the engine fan to diffuse the exhaust gases. 2) The operator's position is lowered by either lowering the seat or changing the seat to a side mount. 3) The operator controls are adjusted to fit the new operator position. 4) Other components, such as the radiator and loader tower, are lowered. 5) Special bumper guards are mounted at the base of the radiator area. 6) An exhaust conditioner is mounted and con¬nected, using either a catalytic or a water-type condi¬tioner, or both. The formation of surface films on pyrite has been studied through electrochemical techniques of cyclic voltametry and AC impedance measurements. The characteristics of the surface films depend upon the conditions of oxidation and the source of pyrite. At potentials near 0.0 V, some pyrites have large values of polarization resistance showing a certain degree of passivity. Some pyrites show more passivation than the others, however. On oxidation, metastable phases of Fe(OH2) and Fe(OH3) form which transform to more stable 3 phases on aging. The growth of surface films near the corrosion potential of pyrite follows a linear kinetics which is attributed to a chemical (or an electrochemical) reaction as the rate determining step. The surface film is considered to be a hydroxide or an oxide rather than sulfur because the later is expected to be limited to a monolayer in alkaline solutions. This study has also demonstrated that AC impedance measurements can be used to study the growth characteristics of films at mineral/ solution interfaces.

In this part of the two-part paper we discuss briefly the adaptation of the comminution model to describe the observed behavior of an industrial grinding circuit. Although reported verification of comminution models for continuous systems is limited, some interesting work has been reported 1,2 recently. The data acquisition and modeling efforts are described first, followed by discussion of some of the simulation results. Observations pertinent to steady-state operation are presented followed by a description of the application of a dynamic model of the grinding circuit for synthesis and evaluation of grinding-circuit control. The pilot-scale work indicated the comminution model should be capable of describing an industrial size-reduction process. Recognizing the broad utility of a process model based on first- principles, the Industrial Nucleonics Corporation of Columbus, Ohio, embarked on a joint program with the Duval Corporation of Tucson, Arizona, to evaluate the industrial applicability of the models described in Part I. This program was conducted in a grinding circuit, which included a rod mill 12.5 feet in diameter and 16 feet long and a ball mill 12.5 feet in diameter and 14 feet long, at Duval Corporation's Esperanza property3. The rod mill was operated in open circuit and the ball mill in closed circuit with cyclone classifiers.

Discussion by Dan Plazak The authors are to be congratulated for presenting a simple and practical tool for quick estimates of ground water flow rates. At the risk of detracting from the simplicity of the method, I would like to suggest a slight refinement to the equation as presented. As the authors noted, the Jacob-Lohman equation (1952) assumes confined-aquifer conditions. To use confined-aquifer equations in water-table aquifers, Jacob (1963) presented a correction to convert water-table aquifer drawdowns [Ahw] to equivalent confined aquifer drawdowns [Ah,: 2] [Ah Ah = Ah - w(1) Cw 2H where: Ah, = Drawdown in confined aquifer: Ahw = Drawdown in water-table aquifer and H = Original saturated thickness of aquifer] Substituting the above in equation ( I) of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson [4nT Ah - 2H ) Qj2.25 T t(2) 1 nr2 S W] Since the above expression predicts lower pump rates, it causes the Jacob-Lohman equation to agree more closely with appropriate analytical and numerical models. Figure 1, adapted from Fig. 5 of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson, illustrates the closer agreement of the modified equation to their numerical model, as reflected in Qm/QJL ratios closer to unity. The agreement improves particularly as drawdown [Ah] becomes large in relation to aquifer thickness H. An additional advantage of the modified equation is that Hanna, Azrag and Atkinson's correction factor C is much more stable as pit depth increases. Mining companies have been very interested in the presence of a number of small but high-grade ore bodies of base metals in northern Wisconsin and the west/central section of the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan. The region is rural with outdoor recreation/tourism and lumbering being the key industries. The economy of the region is based on the use of its natural resources, and mining is not a new activity to the region, especially the UP. The western UP was historically a key mining district for copper and iron, and today the central UP has a significant iron-mining district. However, all efforts to develop the base metal ore bodies have been met with a storm of controversy involving the local community, regional activists, Native Americans, and the state government, and only one mine has gone into operation. There is concern by some stakeholders about the sustainability of mining in communities that depend on the environment for tourism, recreation, and other commercial activities. There have been four attempts to get the necessary approvals to mine in this region: the successful Flambeau Mine effort (Wisconsin), the failed Crandon project (Wisconsin) and Lynne project (Wisconsin) efforts, and the continuing effort to get the Eagle Project (UP of Michigan) approved. The cases are presented to illustrate the project situation, the history of the permitting effort, and the opposing parties and their concerns. The case of the Eagle Project is looked at in detail by using the method of discourse communities and discourse analysis. Results of the analysis provide insight into the communication efforts to address community concerns about sustainability and what more can be done to improve this dialogue.

This paper reports on the behavior of mercury and its compounds during the thiosulfate leaching and recovery of gold. Thiosulfate solutions are shown to dissolve Hg0 and Hg2Cl2 to a similar extent as cyanide, but the leaching of HgS is significantly slower in thiosulfate solutions compared to cyanide. Hence, the use of thiosulfate may be an option for treating ores containing high levels of cinnabar, especially since the legislation concerning the discharge or sale of mercury is becoming more restrictive. The deportment of mercury during gold thiosulfate loading and recovery using a strongly basic anion-exchange resin was also studied. Although the mercury thiosulfate complex loads on the resin, the adsorption is weaker than for gold, with an equilibrium constant between gold and mercury of 51. Resin loaded with gold, mercury and copper was pre-eluted with thiosulfate (to remove copper) and eluted with a chloride and sulfite eluant. The majority of the mercury is eluted by the eluant and, hence, its deportment closely follows gold and the eluate would need to be treated to remove either mercury dur-ing or prior to gold electrowinning.

"EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The use of membranes for the treatment of Acid-Mine-Drainage (AMD) water has been a 35 year mining industry quest that has only recently produced commercial scale Zero-Liquid-Discharge (ZLD) plants. The process of development of the membrane treatment of AMD has been defined by the water treatment industry’s efforts to control gypsum scaling of the membranes, an artifact of the concentration of calcium and sulfate ions on the concentrate or “brine” side of the membranes. Improved anti-scalants, changes to membrane surface geometry and a lowered permeate flux rate were all part of solving the calcium sulfate (gypsum) scale formation problem. Whether used singly or as part of a multi-stage membrane treatment process, the production of “left over” membrane concentrate or brine, in any volume large or small, was a second barrier to adoption of the method by the mining industry. The two identified “final brine” treatments were a) solar evaporation ponds and b) mechanical evaporators. Brine disposal by solar means is typically site limited to flat terrains or high net evaporation locations. Mechanical evaporation-crystallization is applicable at all sites but, typically, at onerously high ownership and operating costs. Miwatek, a South African water treatment start-up, has entered the mining AMD ZLD marketplace with two new, pilot-scale tested, processes, both of which are predicated on the innovative treatment of a reasonably concentrated AMD and neither of which produces a final brine that requires disposal. In the Miwatek Brine Treatment, MBT, method the membrane brine is caustic pH adjusted and de-calcified precedent to passage through a second membrane plant. The caustic is generated on-site by a lime treatment of the second-membrane concentrate. The first- and second-stage permeates are blended for discharge. The process usually yields no “final brine” for disposal. In the Miwatek Ettringite Treatment, MET, method a low pH first-stage membrane brine is lime treated in two or three steps in the presence of aluminum in a way that metal hydroxide and calcium sulfate solids are formed and purged from the system. Sufficient aluminum is often present in the feed water to, with judicious recycling, enable operation of the lime-aluminum treatment without the purchase of outside aluminum reagent. The first-stage membrane permeate is blended with the lime-aluminum treated membrane concentrate for discharge. The indications are that the method can comfortably meet the low 250 -500 ppm SO4 discharge water quality standards that have most recently been proposed in South America. The process yields no “final brine” that requires disposal. Projected own-operate costs for the MBT and MET systems are less than the estimated costs for all identified alternative treatments."

Roadheaders offer a unique capability and flexibility for the excavation of soft to medium strength rock formations, therefore, are very attractive in underground mining and tunneling operations. This paper reviews the importance, technological developments and application limits of roadheaders based on the case histories, which are compiled in a database including different roadheaders in various geological conditions. The paper also discusses the database and empirical performance prediction studies regarding instantaneous cutting rates and bit consumption rates.

The Amax Gold Guanaco mine is located in the Atacama Desert, approximately 260 km southeast of Antofagasta, Chile. The 6,000 tpd leach operation produces approximately 90,000 oz of gold, and 360,000 oz of silver per year. Production began in 1987, and the operation has been managed by Amax Gold since 1992. The mine has been plagued in the past by high operating costs and low production. Several significant changes have been made to the operations which have resulted in lower costs and higher operating efficiencies. A review of these changes is presented herein.

With an ongoing concern for safety and health in the workplace, NYCO® requested three medical evaluations be undertaken to study possible health hazards of wollastonite. Two of the evaluations were conducted by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). One was in 1976 (Ref. 1), and the second in 1982 (Ref. 2). The aim of the two studies was to answer the following two questions: 1. Do wollastonite workers exhibit more respiratory abnormalities than workers not exposed to wollastonite? 2. Is there a relationship between prevalence of respiratory abnormalities and accumulated expo-sure time to wollastonite?
