The control of pH in solvent extraction circuits is an old technique (1,2) but one which has a large potential for future use. The equilibrium position of any reaction which has hydrogen or hydroxide ions, either as products or as reactants, can be controlled by pH adjustment. Several examples of reaction types which are important in solvent extraction systems and which also show a pH dependence are shown in Figure 1. The examples were chosen to show the wide variety of reactions which fit the above criteria, but it is not meant to be a complete listing of all the possible reaction types, Some of the reactions are presented in a simplified form. It is the intent of this paper to discuss pH controlled solvent extraction reactions for some relatively simple systems through more complex ones.

INTRODUCTION Ambient concentrations of radon and its daughter products have been measured and analyzed by a number of investigators for a variety of purposes. Principal among these purposes have been: (1) descriptive, to characterize the distribution and changes in concentrations under various conditions; (2) research in the use of radon as a tracer gas in the study of atmospheric characteristics and motions, such as eddy mass transfer, diffusivity profiles, large scale circulations, and the like; and (3) the use of radon as an atmospheric tracer in exploration for uranium deposits.* This information forms the basic data for this paper and for its placing the ambient natural, or non-anthropogenic, radon concentrations into the perspective of ambient radon health standards and lung cancer risk calculations. To enable better understanding of some aspects of the ambient radon data, review and analysis is also performed on selected measurements of radon emanation or flux from the surface of the earth into the atmosphere. These measurements have generally been made for purposes similar to those for ambient radon, i.e., (1) description of radon emanation characteristics; or (2) to support and justify the use of ambient concentration measurements in atmospheric research; or (3) in exploration for uranium. Interest is also developing in the use of such measurements for earthquake prediction. In addition, to complete the perspective, brief examination is given to anthropogenic ambient and flux radon measurements related to the mining and milling of uranium, so that comparison can he made with the values from natural sources. As a frame of reference we cite here previous summaries of studies which have presented representative values and ranges of ambient concentrations and emanation rates. H. Israel, in the Compendium of Meterorology (1951), cites eight studies of ambient radon concentrations which we have selected as representative of non-anomalous continental values. Their means generally range from [0.06 to 0.15 pCi lit-1 with the smallest reported minimum of zero and the largest maximum 0.53 pCi lit-1. The overall mean is 0.10 with a standard deviation of 0.03 pCi lit-1. Means over oceans are much smaller, and the data scarcer, with only three values ranging from 0.0004 to 0.003 pCi lit-1 and a mean of 0.0016 pCi lit-1.] Thirteen studies from Israel's list were selected as representative of mountainous terrain. These data, except for the cases of higher elevations, frequently show significantly higher values than the average cases in non-mountainous terrain described-above. The averages range from 0.10 to 0.59 pCi lit-l; the smallest minimum is zero and the largest maximum is 9.2 pCi lit-1. The overall mean is 0.30 with a standard deviation of 0.17 pCi lit-1. Israel also cites five studies of radon emanation (flux) from the earth's surface. These show a mean of 0.40 pCi-2m-2 sec-1 and a range of from 0.21 to 0.74 pCi m-2 sec-1. Data on flux are naturally scarcer in the literature than data on ambient concentrations, because of the greater interest in and utility of the ambient information. In this paper we also give special consideration to observations of the variability in time and space of radon flux rates, and to the impact of these phenomena on the use of such data for a variety of purposes. NATURAL(NON-ANTHROPOGENIC)AMBIENT RADON CONCENTRATIONS We have examined the following reports for the data selected for this category; these studies were generally intended to describe radon characteristics in the atmosphere. Jonassen and Wilkening (1970); Bradley and Pearson (1970); Wilkening (1970); Lambert, et al (1970); Pearson and Moses (1966); and DickPeddie, et al (1974). Another set of studies which was reviewed was selected because the investigators made ambient radon measurements in the course of examining the use of radon as a tracer in atmospheric research. This set consists of: Israel and Horbert (1970); Carlson and Prospero (1972); Subramanian, et al (1977); Larson (1978); Cohen, et al (1972); Hosler (1966); and Shaffer and Cohen (1972). Finally, unpublished data from uranium exploration activities (Milly and Thayer, 1976) was analyzed. [Treating the ocean cases first, the mean values are generally consistent with those quoted earlier from Israel (0.0004 to 0.003 pCi lit-1); they range from 0.001 to 0.011 pCi lit-1, with 0.003 the most frequently reported value. Continental values, from eight studies, range in means from 0.07 to 0.41 pCi lit-1 (not including mineralized areas, or "uranium country", discussed later), with maxima as high as 2.4 pCi lit -l. For comparison, the means from Israel are 0.06 to 0.15 pCi lit-1, with a maximum of 0.53 pCi lit-1. Accurately predicting coal seam discontinuities is an important part of modern underground coal mining. Conventional methods of coal exploration sometimes fail to identify rapid variations that may seriously impact mining and quality. Radio Imaging Method (RIM), a geophysical approach to mapping longwall panels, has been developed where electromagnetic signals are transmitted and received though the coal block. The amount of signal loss for a given distance, when compared to the coal seam characteristics, identifies anomalous areas. A comparison of RIM predictions with actual geologic conditions encountered during longwall mining demonstrates the accuracy and usefulness of the data.

The coal company Minerales Monclova, S.A. (MIMOSA), the owner of the Mimosa R Line, is a subsidiary company of Altos Hornos de Mexico, S.A., the largest steel plant in Mexico with an annual capacity of 2.5 million metric tons of steel ingots. The raw material's which are used in the steel plant are provided by the following companies: La Perla Minas de Fierro, S.A., iron ore; Cia. Minera de Guadalupe, S.A., Cia. Carbonera La Sauceda, S.A. Cia. Minera La Florida, S.A., and Minerales Monclova, S.A., which provide the coal used for coke, and altogether constitute the industrial group AHMSA. The coal property of Minerales Monclova, S.A. is located in the Sabinas coal area in the northwestern part of the Sabinas basin.

The Tenmile Range is a north trending zone of high relief within the central Colorado porphyry-mineral belt, located between Leadville and Breckenridge. (Figure 1, the Index Map of the area surveyed.) The Climax mineralized zone is located at the southern end of the range on the northwest side of the Continental Divide. This portion of the total area surveyed will be discussed in detail today. A fixed wing aeromagnetic survey was flown over this range and mineralized zone in the fall of 1957. The survey was run as an experiment to see if a useful geophysical tool could be applied in the exploration for similar type deposits. The purpose of this paper is to describe the results of this survey and the approaches used to aid in the interpretation of the total intensity data.

My reaction when first asked to present this paper was; "What could I possibly say that would hold the audience?s attention for 15 minutes? What could I offer that anyone familiar with the Nevada Barite Industry wouldn't already know?" Well, quite frankly I can't. The industry has certainly been anything but exciting for the past 10 years and, in fact, quite depressing. The challenge, for those few of us left in it, has been to keep it alive. At times it has felt like a doctor must feel with a terminally ill patient. All I can do is recap the past ten years, review the present state of the industry, and offer a few personal opinions and observations as to where I think we are headed.

The growing national concern over energy has aroused a great deal of interest in the most efficient and least costly way to use our remaining fossil fuel reserves. A number of studies have been published which compare the overall thermal efficiency and cost of gas and electric energy. These studies have been carried out by a wide variety of organizations including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, The Rand Corporation, The Stanford Research Institute, and The Institute of Gas Technology. This paper is an attempt, by PGandE, a large combined gas and electric utility serving most of the northern and parts of central California, to compare the cost and efficiency of gas and electric energy for certain residential appliances using actual operating data and financial statistics for the year 1974, and thereby develop some guidelines for future energy developments utilizing these limited fossil resources. The appliances chosen for the study were kitchen ranges, clothes dryers, hot water and space heaters. These appliances were selected because they can be served with either gas or electricity and they account for approximately one-third of PGandE's total residential electric sales and nearly all of PGandE's residential gas sales.

"Urban tunneling projects are usually extensively monitored. Most of the instruments used rely on benchmarks providing a sustainable datum throughout the life of the project. The monitoring program also is based on a predicted model of deformation induced by specific construction methods. Events can interfere with those assumptions and eventually alter the stability of these datum. In addition, the anticipated ground conditions and hence the theoretical deformation model often differ from reality. Satellite Radar Interferometry provides useful information to overcome the weakness of the hypothesis made before construction. It is also a powerful tool to ensure the continuity of the monitoring program throughout the life of the project, accurately describing the true effect of the project on the surrounding environment. This paper emphasizes the benefits and limitations of this technique for urban tunneling applications, illustrated by examples of major tunneling projects around the world. MONITORING URBAN TUNNEL PROJECTS Why Monitoring? Retrofitting existing tunnels or constructing new tunnels – including access and retrieval shafts, portals and cross passages – implies an alteration of the neighboring soil structure. Excavating, dewatering, grouting, loading tie backs, etc. artificially modifies the natural equilibrium of the pore-water pressure, of the water table level and of soil stability. In many cases, the effects are immediate: ground loss, deformation of utilities, settlements of buildings, and distortion of infrastructure are a few examples resulting from construction activity.Instrumentation and Monitoring Scope To control and mitigate the risks of damage associated with the above effects, tunnel projects usually include an instrumentation and monitoring program. Depending on the level of geotechnical, structural and environmental risk, the magnitude of this program varies. Projects with a low exposure to risk may restrain the program to conventional methods such as limited topographical surveys and intermittent manual readings of geotechnical instruments. On the other hand, iconic projects with high risk or with controversial history may implement complex and extensive instrumentation plans, involving highly technical solutions such as Automated Motorized Total Stations (AMTS – see opposite Picture 1), Multi-Point Borehole Extensometers (MPBX), In-Place Inclinometers (IPI) and a wide series of fully automated geotechnical, structural and environmental sensors. In this case, all the devices are usually connected to field data loggers collecting raw data around the clock at frequencies ranging from days to seconds, depending on the sensors."

Each and every mining operation from a simple sand-and-gravel pit to the largest integrated mine-mill-concentrator-smelter-refining complex has, as its foundation, a quantity of extractable natural resource the reserves. Without reserves, there is no mine, and any concentrating or extracting plant, no matter how sophisticated, is simply so much scrap metal. And, of course, without resources there are no reserves. It is remarkable, therefore, especially in this age of careful planning, high quality engineering, and state-of-the-art financial analysis, that such a fundamental and vital item is so little understood and the subject- of so much confusion. Time and time again it has been the experience of the author, when called in to a mining operation that has run into trouble in reaching projected production targets, to find that the designed-for tons were not reaching the concentrator/extraction plant, and/or the grade of such tonnage was substantially below the forecast and design grade of the plant. The mill blames the mine for delivering below standard tons and/or grade and the mining engineer blames the geologist for overly-optimistic assessment or incorrect interpretation of the deposit. The geologist blames the mining and metallurgy division for wrongly interpreting his data and conclusions, or simply fouling-up a fine orebody.

Over the past five years, the two-fold growth in Canada's coal industry "Figure, 1" results primarily from the coking coal market to Japan and, to a lesser degree, by the increasing use of sub-bituminous and lignite coal for power generation in the Prairie Provinces. This expansion will continue, but production of coal for domestic thermal generation of electricity will grow at a faster rate than coking coal exports "Figure, 2". Half of the 20 million tons of thermal coal used for electrical power generation in Canada during 1974 were imported by Ontario Hydro from U.S. coal companies in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Ontario Hydro's Nanticoke station on Lake Erie which will consume 7.5 million tons of coal in 1977 when fully operative, as well as other future planned projects, could cause Ontario Hydro's coal consumption to rise from 10 million tons today to 20 to 25 million tons by 1985

This paper deals with the daily work of operating geologists and should be of interest to recent graduates. Working with development and production is quite different from exploration and many of the required skills and techniques must be learned on the job. Try to obtain your first position at a mine where good geological work is being done because it is important that you establish a solid foundation by learning valid techniques. Many do not! Those who desire to work in exploration are well advised to spend the initial two or three years at an operating mine where they will deal daily with an orebody during development and mining. Attempt to understand the controls of ore deposition and be interested in all phases of the operation. Learn something about factors which can adversely affect profitability and you will be a better explorationist.

Most miners dream of finding a gold mine sometime during their mining careers, but not very often do such dreams come true. On the tenth day of September, 1962, our dream of finding gold came true when the results of the third drill hole were received. This was undoubtedly one of the most exciting days of our lives. Little did we realize then that this was the beginning of a major discovery destined to became one of the largest gold mines in the country. Discovering and mining gold is not entirely new, however, to Eureka. County a old Lynn Mining District in northeastern Nevada. Since 1900 there has been sporadic activity, mostly consisting of small lode mines and placers. These have produced totally about $300,000; and existence of our orebody would probably have remained unknown had it not been for the United States Geological Survey. The USGS extensively mapped the Roberts Mountain Thrust and published a paper indicating that mineral occurred along this fault and in some places was gold bearing. Utilizing this information, our Newmont Exploration geologists located an area in which: drills were brought in to test their theories. By keeping flexible in our thinning and working, we were able to bring a raw prospect to a producing mine with ore reserves of eleven million tons in a short three-year period.

Lithium raw materials usable with present technology consist of pegmatite ore and surficial evaporite brine. Those advantageously located now supply world markets. Materials of similar grades and magnitude, but less favorably located, will come into production as present sources are depleted and markets expand. Some of these potential supplies have been explored, and are reserves in the sense of known availability and quality. Reserves herein are of two classes, those proved by close drilling and assaying, and those of only probable status because their scale and grade are unsystematically indicated. Possible resources include similar materials whose bulk can only be inferred on indirect evidence. All figures apply to total materials in the ground. No allowance is made for losses in mining, evaporation, beneficiation, or chemical processing.

In the, West, walking draglines often offer the least cost method of uncovering coal for surface mines. However, with each of these machines costing millions of dollars, a good deal of analysis can be justified by the potenial savings or, conversely, costs associated with the choice of a machine. This has resulted in the recent development of a number of computerized models for dragline selection and pit design. One of the earliest reported models for this purpose was developed by Dunlap and Jacobs (1). Later, Rumfeldt described the computer approach to sizing stripping draglines given the required production rate and mine site parameters (2). This basic approach is probably still the most widely used with models for more complicated mining methods reported by Stefanko, Tomica, Finch, as well as others (3,4,5). furthermore, detailed simulation models useful in this regard have been developed by McDonnell Douglas and Fluor, Utah (6,7)

My comments today are directed toward western coal and its impact on Burlington Northern. I will be discussing three major topics. These are: location and extent of mining activities, the flows of this coal traffic into the various market territories, and finally the interaction of this western coal with coals found in the balance of the United States. When we at BN speak of western coal, we refer to those substantial deposits lying in southeastern Montana and north-eastern Wyoming. This territory covers many different coal formations. For the sake of simplicity, I will be referring to this general area as the Powder River Basin (or the "western" coal fields). This slide highlights the area overlayed by a map of the BN rail system. The U.S. Bureau of Mines estimates the demonstrated reserve base of Montana and Wyoming to be approximately 176 billion tons. Of this figure, about 73 billion tons is minable by surface methods. This is roughly 72% of the total strippable reserves in the western united states, BN does not have sole access to this coal for there are deposits in southern Wyoming near the union pacific railroad. I will say more about this later.

In some ore grinding circuits it is desirable to make separations purely on size. The normal choice for this is vibrating screen equipment. Developments in screening process technology have led to improvements in the capacity and efficiency of vibrating screens, through the adoption "Thin Layer Wet Screening". This process can reduce recirculating loads and equipment requirements in the ore grinding circuit.

Of the 15 million tons of glass discarded in municipal wastes annually, about 2 million tons pass through incinerators and can be recovered by ore processing techniques. Although the primary use for this recovered waste glass would be as cullet in the manufacture of new glass containers, this approach is not always practical because of long shipping distances, high freight costs, and high purity requirements. Alternatives to the use of waste glass as cullet would be either as landfill or in secondary products. Although glass is considered a good landfill material, it is still wasteful of potentially valuable raw materials. Secondary products that can be made from waste glass1 include a variety of industrial and construction items. As part of the Bureau of Mines' program in secondary materials recovery, the Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Laboratory has conducted research concerned with the development of ceramic building products from waste glass. Materials employed in this research were obtained from municipal incinerator residues fractionated in the Bureau's continuous residue processing plant, College Park Metallurgy Research center.' The studies reported herein3,4 present research results using waste glass in the formulation and production of clay bricks, not only to produce improved products, but to reduce production costs, conserve natural raw materials, and most important, to reduce manufacturing energy requirements.

Effective control of balling line circuits is a problem taconite companies have been dealing with for over thirty years. The sensitivity of balling circuits to changes in moisture, bentonite, concentrate particle size, and other operating parameters are the main reasons for control problems. This paper presents test results and describes the integration of existing instrumentation with a digital image analysis system on a balling circuit. This work has the goal of developing control strategies to automatically adjust water spray and bentonite addition, to optimize the size distribution on the roll screen and reduce the variability in control between balling attendants, resulting in more consistent greenball product quality.

The title of this paper is "Designing Very Large Bio-oxidation Plants". To our knowledge, only one such plant has been designed and built to date, and that is U.S. Gold's Tonkin Springs plant in Nevada. This plant was commissioned in Spring of 1990 and operated for a short time successfully as a bio-leach plant but U.S. Gold did not have the financial strength to overcome the consequences of construction delays and increased capital cost. The plant has temporarily been 1 put on a standby basis. Recently, < > a potential joint venture between Tonkin Springs Gold Mining Company and Homestake Mining was announced. Homestake will operate the mine with the technology and subsequent improvements would be co-owned by both companies. This paper is not a "how to" type publication because we feel that such an approach could be dangerous if used improperly. Rather, we discuss some of the important aspects of process selection, testing and design that need attention, and some of the lessons learned to date. As with all developments, improvements and new knowledge will accrue as more companies use bio-oxidation technology. The Tonkin Springs plant is fair evidence that bio-oxidation has "arrived" as a technology, and that successful design and operation of plants treating greater than 1000 t/d of feed is possible.

In the past three years there has been a great amount of attention given to phosphates world wide, and in particular to the Florida Phosphate Industry. I would like to relate some of the most recent history of the industry and give you a personal outlook for the future. Phosphate rock has been produced in Florida since its discovery on the Peace River in the 1880&apos;s. Through 1976, approximately 720 million ST of rock had been mined from Florida reserves, and it is my opinion that there are at least 1.2 billion tons remaining which are consolidated, accessible and can reasonably be expected to be permitted for mining. Over half the 1.2 billion tons will be deeper, more scattered, leaner and will produce lower grade rock than the Bone Valley of Central Florida has tradition-ally produced. In 1973, &apos;74, &apos;75 and &apos;76 the Florida Phosphate Industry produced 32.6, 34.0, 38.2 and (38.0) (P) million ST of phosphate rock respectively. This rock was produced by ten mining companies, Agrico, Borden, Brewster Phosphates, Gardinier, Grace, IMC, Mobil, Occidental, Swift, and USS Agri-Chem; mines are located -17 in Polk County, one in Hillsborough County and two in Hamilton County, Florida. Phosphate rock is used by local companies in Florida primarily to produce phosphoric acid from which DAP and TSP is manufactured. Florida acid producers use about 15 million STPY in acid plants in Florida, and another 7.5 million STPY is consumed by acid producers in plants on and near the Mississippi River. Somewhat
