During the last century the importance of coal as a natural re- source has frequently come to the attention of the general public, but never before nave circumstances combined to focus as much attention on coal as it receives today. There is the ever increasing demand for energy that can be met only by coal consumption, coupled with a growing awareness of man's potential for despoiling his own environment. Society monitors the use of the remaining resources with an increasingly critical eye and, for obvious reasons, surface mining operations tend to draw an unusual amount of public attention. While the surface mine is a successful economic competitor with other uses of the earth's outer skin, one of the unrewarding results of such activity is tile simultaneous destruction of two of our most important resources--the coal seam and the surface soil. In a relative sense the coal seam is a nonreplaceable resource but the surface soil can be restored. Unfortunately, little attention has been given to land reclamation and even less has been devoted to the restoration of a productive surface soil. The research reported in this paper was de- signed to test the relative productivity of newly reclaimed surface mine spoils in western Illinois. The results are preliminary in nature but may aid in the future redevelopment of mine spoil soils in the Illinois Coal Basin.

"INTRODUCTION Shield tunnelling is often used in constructing underground infrastructure in cities due to the ability to limit settlements and damage to existing buildings. However, in an urban environment with soft overburden and buildings on pile foundations such as the North-South Line project in Amsterdam, there is a tendency to design the tunnel well below the surface and below the pile tip level in order to reduce interaction between tunnelling process and piles. This results in deep tunnels and deep station boxes. When the tunnels are located close to the surface and above the pile tip level, this would reduce the required depth of the station boxes and the construction cost. Moreover, other benefits of shallow tunnels are the low operational cost in the long-term and shorter traveling time from the surface to the platforms. Still, the tunnels should be constructed in such a manner that existing buildings are not structurally damaged, which results in a minimum required distance between tunnelling process and existing buildings. In this paper, the extent of the area that is influenced by tunnelling will be investigated in order to determine the limit distance from tunnelling to existing foundations without inducing too large building deformation. From analysing empirical data of many shield tunnels, Peck (1969) firstly presented the settlement trough on the surface induced by tunnelling in soft soil as a Gaussian distribution. This is also confirmed by other authors (Cording and Hansmire, 1975; Mair et al., 1993; Ahmed and Iskander, 2010). In this study, the Gaussian curve is used to investigate the ground movement when tunnelling in order to find the effects on existing structures. Based on the results from centrifuge test and empirical data, Mair et al. (1993) showed that the subsurface settlement profile distributes as the Gaussian curve also. The width of settlement trough at the depth z depends on the depth of the tunnel z0 and a coefficient K depending on depth. Other studies by Moh et al. (1996), Grant and Taylor (2000) and Jacobsz (2003) based on Mair et al. (1993) proposed a limited change of K in various kinds of soil."

"INTRODUCTION The vision for a “Mine Escape Vehicle” (MEV) is to provide capabilities to better enable underground travel to allow miners to escape to safety in the event of a major mine emergency such as a fire or explosion. Enhanced transportation and survival capability such as a MEV may have minimized or eliminated the loss of life associated with several of the mine disasters that occurred in 2006, which together resulted in the deaths of 19 miners. Although the most desirable response in an emergency is for the miners exit the mine, if escape proved to be impossible, the miners could use the vehicle to proceed to an underground point of refuge to await rescue. Under a NIOSH contract issued in April 2008, Raytheon developed a conceptual vehicle design including (1) the capacity to provide life support functions for a number of miners, (2) operate in a reduced oxygen atmosphere with little or no visibility, and (3) travel at speeds faster than miners could walk out of the mine. The proposed MEV concept envisioned modification of a personnel carrier (a.k.a. a “mantrip”) that would be used every day during normal mine operations, not a specialized vehicle reserved only for or dedicated solely to escape. The MEV concept also included escape aids that are detachable from the vehicle in the event that the vehicle must be abandoned on the way out of the mine and the dismounted miners had to proceed on foot. To advance MEV development, NIOSH awarded a second contract in 2010 to Raytheon to build, test, and evaluate the performance of a proof-of-concept MEV that culminated in a 7-month performance evaluation of vehicle in an Eastern Kentucky coal mine (Figure 1). User feedback and lessons learned from the proof-of-concept vehicle evaluation provided support for the general MEV approach, guidance related to the practicality of MEV capabilities, and indication of specific technology shortcomings for this application."

The new Los Angeles, California JWPCP effluent outfall tunnel will transport secondary-treated effluent from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson to White Point Manifold. The tunnel will be approximately 7 miles (11 km) long with a finished internal diameter of 18 ft (5.5 m). The TBM is designed to cope with high water pressure up to 10 bar. The geotechnical challenges are due to the heterogeneous subsurface conditions: in the first half of the alignment, the tunnel runs through soils with a low overburden under urban areas, and, in the second half, the tunnel runs through extremely weak, intensely faulted rock masses with high overburden. Following an overview of the project, this paper focuses on the northern portion of the alignment and presents a decision-making procedure developed during pre-excavation phase in order to cope with the expected heterogeneous conditions during mining. The risk assessment and the TBM operational design of the southern portion will be dealt with in a future paper.

The uncertain world conditions of the present time require that the United States be prepared to meet: a. all-out nuclear war with attack on the United States b. limited wars (anything smaller than (a.) c. political, economic, and/or psychological warfare. Our present position as a major world power derives in large measure from our free institutions and our great industrial productivity, and our productivity in turn depends on an ever-continuing flow of raw materials from the earth - metals, minerals, fuels, and agricultural products. The United States, with only about 6% of the world's population, uses from one-third to two-thirds of the world's annual supplies of 'most metals and minerals. The United States strategic materials stockpiling program is designed to enhance our national security posture: as stated in the preamble of the Stock Piling Act, to decrease and prevent wherever possible a dangerous and costly dependence of the United States upon foreign nations for supplies of strategic and critical materials in times of national emergency. In times past, the Good Lord himself has ordered some stockpiling. The Book of Genesis in the Bible tells how Pharaoh of Egypt was directed to set aside one-fifth of the produce of the land in each of the seven good years to meet the needs of the seven bad years that were to follow: this would be a stockpile of about two years? normal use. Our cultural heritage often reminds us of the wisdom of stockpiling, as in the case of the stories about the provident squirrels that gather their nuts in an orderly manner in the f all to prepare for the winter's cold. And the old proverb about a bird in the hand being worth two in the bush points out clearly the value of something that is directly at hand.

Synthetic gypsum is the calcium sulfate co-product of a number of industrial processes. Synthetic gypsum utilization as an alternative to the naturally occurring mineral continues to grow in the gypsum industry. In particular, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum produced by the electrical utility industry has had a significant impact and a far-reaching effect on the gypsum wallboard manufacturing industry. This paper will discuss the various synthetic gypsum sources verses natural gypsum and highlight issues of use in gypsum wallboard and related products.

Very little information is available concerning the magnetic properties of minerals and only recently has there been any attempt to correlate magnetic susceptibility with varying chemical composition1. The work described here covers a study of the relationship and chemical composition of both the rutile and sphene types of titanium minerals. The relationship between the magnetic susceptibility of three selected mineral specimens and the applied field strength is also presented. Experimental: The equipment and procedures used in this in- vestigation for crushing and cleaning the mineral specimens and for determining the magnetic susceptibilities were the same as that employed by Spokes and Mitchell1. The particle size of-the measured specimens was limited to 270/325 mesh.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated flotation hydrodynamics to improve the recovery of coarse phosphate. Fluid velocity profile measurements were used to characterize the hydrodynamics within commercial phosphate flotation cells and laboratory flotation cells. The effects of agitation, aeration, and pH on coarse phosphate recovery were measured in the laboratory flotation cells and correlated with the hydrodynamics measurements. Test results revealed that the agitation energy and aeration level had a significant effect upon flotation response. By optimizing these two parameters, 92 pct of the phosphate was recovered in a rougher flotation concentrate grading 28 pct P2O5?

Shallow ore deposits are mined by surface methods but a depth is reached in the case of most deposits after which underground methods are applied for the extraction of the remaining ore. The determination of this depth and its analysis is the subject of this paper. In order to determine transition depth from open-pit to underground mining on the basis of the allowable and economically feasible overall stripping ratios, an economic-mathematical equation is first introduced. Using the achieved equation and an analytical procedure on a particular two-dimensional hypothetical tabulate deposit, an effective formula is then established. The formula introduced here, together with the procedure adopted, could be used in all similar mining situations by the mining design engineer.

The more important factors controlling the design of pit slopes are related to the local geology over which the designer has little or no control. Nevertheless, there are some factors over which the designer does exert some control and these concern the say in which the rock is excavated and supported. They include blasting, face cleaning, water control, and the use of rock improvement techniques. The paper discusses these factors and relates the extra costs incurred to the steeper slope angles that can usually be obtained. It is demonstrated that even a modest increase in bench angle of 5° through improved excavation techniques can pay off in a single push-back.

"This paper takes an in-depth look at the $72 million design-build Norris Cut project, which includes the replacement of an existing 54-inch waste water sewer main to Fisher Island under the Norris Cut Channel. Tunneling through one of the country’s most unpredictable geologies created unique challenges in both the design and construction phases of the project. The paper presents the geotechnical and structural design considerations for the 100-foot deep secant piled TBM launch shaft in the highly permeable Fort Thompson formation limestone and sands. The structural design effort also included the design of the tremie slab, thrust wall and design of the largely unreinforced launch shaft to resist asymmetric loading from partial ground freezing. The retrieval shaft was designed as a deep soil mixed shaft and is thought to be the deepest soil-mixed shaft in Miami. From a construction perspective, this paper discusses the unique challenges of building two shafts with two different techniques and will compare some of the constructability aspects, costs and equipment schedule-considerations related to the use of two separate techniques. INTRODUCTION Nicholson Construction Company (NCC) was awarded a $72.1 million Design-Build contract to replace an existing force main from the Virginia Key Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant (CDWWTP) under the Norris Cut Channel to Fisher Island. The location of the project is shown in Figure 1. The project involves replacing an existing 54-inch diameter pre-stressed concrete sewer force main with a 60-inch diameter fiberglass force main. Arup USA, Inc. (Arup) is the lead designer for Nicholson on this design-build project. Arup is providing design services for the TBM launch and retrieval shafts, segmental tunnel lining, the fiberglass pipe, and the horizontal directional drill component. Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department currently owns and operates the existing 54-inch sanitary force main that transmits sewage collected from Miami Beach and Fisher Island to the CDWWTP for treatment and disposal. The existing force main was subject to a condition assessment in December 2011 which revealed structural deficiencies in the pre-stressed concrete pipeline."

Miners have long known that rock noise, or the popping and cracking of the rock commonly heard during mining, can indicate instability of the mine structure. For many years, miners have "listened" to the rock talk and many times have interpreted changes in rock noise activity to be a warning of failure and have retreated from the potential failure area. Microseismics, or the study of rock noises, was begun in the early 1940s partly because of this historical fact. Microseismics is based on using geophysical equipment to detect and analyze rock noises on audible and subaudible levels. Thus, these systems are much more sensitive than the human ear and "hear" even more of the rock "talk" than do miners. Research has shown that micro-seismics can be used to precisely locate portions of a working area that are generating rock noise, and that rock noise release rate information from each area can be used to analyze its stability. On the basis of research results, microseismic systems are now commercially available and have been purchased and installed in many mines around the world. Introduction When a rock mass is subjected to changing stress conditions, such as those caused by mining, small-scale adjustments occur within the rock that release seismic energy. When this energy is in the audible range it is called rock noise. Those areas where stress changes occur are also the areas of the structure most likely to fail. Individual rock noises can be detected and analyzed to determine their precise location relative to the mine structure. Over a period of time plots of this data provide a pictorial representation of where stress changes are occurring. This is because rock noise activity tends to concentrate in those structure areas most actively adjusting to the changing stresses. Since these areas are the most likely to fail, they can be pinpointed and mapped relative to the structure. Rock noise rates, or the number of rock noises occurring per unit of time, also tend to vary dramatically before failure. Thus, the ability to locate the source of individual rock noises provides a means of determining where failure may occur, and rate counting within each area offers a means of assessing when failure may occur. This information, properly treated, can be used to avoid, control, or warn of impending failure. Successful applications of this technique have provided recent impetus to the effort of developing microseismics into a practical, reliable, and economically feasible tool. The phenomenon of naturally occurring rock noise was discovered in 1938 by Obert and Duvall (1939) who were measuring seismic velocities in mine pillars. Seismic energy other than what they were generating continually registered on their recording equipment. Further study by these researchers showed that the extraneous seismic energy being recorded was from rock noises that were being generated within the rock in highly stressed areas. Pursuing this interesting phenomena both in the laboratory and in the field, Obert and Duvall documented the dramatic change in rock noise rate before failure (Obert, 1941). They also established the fact that, in many instances, rock burst failures could be predicted by monitoring and listening to the rock noise activity in rock-burst-prone areas (Obert and Duvall, 1945). These early efforts clearly showed that microseismics had great potential as a tool for measuring or estimating mine structure stability. Extended testing, however, showed that sometimes rock bursts occurred with no apparent microseismic warning, and that at other times sharp increases in microseismic data were not accompanied by failure. Also, because precise location of individual rock noises was not possible at that time, one never knew where the failure was going to occur, only that failure near the observation point was likely. Thus, while the technique clearly offered promise, it was not considered practical then. In the mid-1960s, the Bureau of Mines undertook a new research effort to improve the microseismic technique. Major improvements were judged possible mainly because new and vastly improved electronic and system components had become available as an offshoot of space program instrument development. Thus, in 1967, development of a multichannel, broad band, microseismic system began (Blake and Leighton, 1970). Application of this system in rock-burst-prone mines showed it worked well and provided the incentive to develop methods whereby the source location of individual rock noises could be easily and directly calculated (Leighton and Blake, 1970; Leighton and Duvall, 1972; Redfern and Munson, 1982). This research work discusses the development of a two-dimensional model that represents the flow that occurs in the inlet section of hydrocyclones. The governing equations are the two-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in cylindrical polar coordinates with primitive variable formulations. In this approach, no assumptions have been made other than independence in the axial direction. The full two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation in the r-a plane is used. The commonly used simplifying assumption of axisymmetry is not used. A numerical technique based on a newly developed spectral-difference method is used to solve the equations. The spectral-difference method is a multi-domain, and multi-dimensional extension of the Jacobi polynomial collocation technique. The computational grid for the inlet section is composed of 25 sub-domains which result from five partitions in the angular direction and five partitions in the radial direction. Several test cases are used to validate the appropriateness of the numerical model.

The heightened concern over the environment which has developed in recent years has caused activities on National Forest lands to come under more intense public scrutiny. This has been especially true for activities oriented toward the production of commodities. Cattle grazing, mining, timber harvesting, and oil and gas leasing and drilling have all been increasingly subject to appeal and litigation. As a result, environmental analyses being conducted by the Forest Service have become more comprehensive, and measures to reduce or eliminate adverse impacts on resources have been given more attention. The costs of such environmental mitigation measures can be significant even when viewed in the context of the millions of dollars a company may spend, for example, to develop a mine. Using the Montanore Project in northwestern Montana as a case study, this paper examines the costs of alleviating some of the detrimental effects which may occur as a result of a mining operation. Although many of the general issues that have been raised about Montanore are common to other mineral projects, the scale of the project, as well as the fact that the ore body is within a wilderness area, the site is in grizzly bear habitat, and the surface waters are considered to be pristine, all combine to make Montanore particularly challenging from an environ- mental standpoint. Much of the information which follows is contained in the most recent version of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) which is scheduled to be published in several weeks. Based on agency and public comments, some of the information presented in the paper will change before the Final Environmental Impact Statement is issued in 1991.

Representative sample s of typical manganiferous iron ores from the Cuyuna Range, Minnesota, were reduced to the metallic iron state at temperatures just short of fusion with an excess of coke in the manner prescribed by the R-N Direct Reduction Process. The magnetic separation characteristics of the reduced ores were determined at several grinds by means of the Davis magnetic tube concentrator. The efficiency of metallic iron concentration by magnetic separation was a direct function of the degree of metallization of the ore sample and of the degree of liberation attained in grinding. Some improvement of liberation characteristics was observed if a small amount of sodium chloride was present in the ore during reduction. Despite the extremely fine -grained structure of the crude ores, iron concentrates containing more than 90% Fe at iron unit recoveries of 90% or more were obtained from well-metallized samples of three of the four ores tested. The rejection of manganese to the tailings corresponding to such separations varied from 80 to 95%.

Giant gold deposits are considered products of crustal-scale systems. Reduced fluids stored in mid to lower crustal reservoirs were discharged into mid to upper crustal sites of deposition. Elements of the architecture include crustal-scale structures, reduced packages of rock and regional seals. Gas-rich aqueous fluids were common but non-aqueous fluids may have been significant in the deeper parts of the systems. Fluid fluxes in over pressured domains were maintained by porosity waves. Abnormal heat input from the mantle may not be required once the systems were perturbed. Fluid-mixing and hypogene enrichment were probably the most significant precipitation processes.

The Red Dog massive sulfide deposit is located in the western Brooks Range of Alaska 100 miles north of the village of Kotzebue. It contains the largest zinc reserve in the world. Reserves were doubled in 1995 with the discovery of the Aqqaluk deposit and significantly increased in 1996, with the discovery of a deep zone of mineralization to the north. At present the global reserve and resource is 143 million tonnes of 16.1 % zinc and 4.3% lead. Red Dog is a silica + sulfide synsedimentary replacement deposit hosted in barite and black shale of the Mississippian Kuna Formation. Red Dog was thrust northward during the late Mesozoic Brookian orogeny. Understanding the setting of the deposit at the time of formation and its subsequent deformation history is critical to current exploration efforts and to future discoveries in the district.

The dewatering of flocculated clay suspensions by compression in a centrifugal field has been investigated. The results are evaluated with regard to both direct applicability to centrifugal dewatering, in solid-bowl centrifuges for example, and indirect applications to gravity sedimentation systems. It is well known that sediment consolidation under gravity depends on structural characteristics such as permeability and on the "self-weight" of overlying sediment layers. An important objective of the study has been to evaluate the self-weight effect using centrifugal forces to simulate consolidation in deep sediments. In this way, small-scale laboratory tests can be used to predict the rates and limits of sediment compression in industrial systems such as thickeners and settling ponds. Experiments have been conducted in which the sediment mass and initial structure were maintained constant while the effective sediment weight was varied by centrifuging at different speeds. The effects of initial structure have also been studied using controlled variations in flocculation conditions.

Nearly three decades of intense research, corresponding with a period of unparalleled discovery and the advent of scientific advances and hypotheses of ore formation, has resulted in a great body process-focused research concerning how ore deposits form. The development of process models and their application has proceeded more or less in step. Discoveries have been made in mineralized regions such as provinces and districts but generally without a comparably developed understanding of why provinces and ore bodies exist and, except in general terms, where ore deposits are within districts and regions. The process of discovery is still referred to as search and exploration budgets are heavily weighted toward exploration drilling.
