Meramec Mining Company, owned 50% by St. Joseph Lead Company and 50% by Bethlehem Steel Corporation,- is engaged in the mining, concentrating and pelletizing of iron ore from the Pea Ridge Mine which is located in the rugged, wooded Missouri Ozarks about 15 miles from the town of Sullivan or 75 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the middle 1950's by the St. Joseph Lead Company during the Company's intensive exploration program to discover new lead orebodies to replace the declining reserves of the famous Southeast Missouri Lead Belt. An airborne magnetometer survey was run by the U.S. Geological Survey, the Missouri Survey and several mining companies, (of which St. Joseph Lead Company was the principal supporter). The survey was published in 1950 and disclosed an anomaly in the vicinity of Pea Ridge. In 1950 test drill holes disclosed that under some 1300 feet of sediments there did exist an iron deposit of probable commercial significance. No further action was taken until 1956 when additional drill holes confirmed beyond reasonable-doubt-that this was a major iron ore discovery.

European industrial policy seeks to provide the right framework conditions to allow companies to develop and innovate and to make the EU an attractive place for job creation. This includes providing the basis for a competitive manufacturing industry which provides around 20% of EU economic output and employment for about 34 million people. The EU non-energy extractive industry with an annual turnover of around ?40 billion and a direct workforce of about 270,000 people is considerably smaller, but it plays a vital role in providing much of the manufacturing sector with raw materials. It also supplies very large quantities of minerals such as aggregates and natural stone to the construction industry, facilitating the development of modern infrastructure such as roads, railways, houses, schools and hospitals. However, despite an active extractive industry, Europe is increasingly dependent on imports of raw materials and particularly metallic ores and concentrates. In 2005, the trade deficit for minerals was in excess of ?11 billion, of which ?10 billion related to metallic minerals. Such import dependency is not a new phenomenon, but the rapid industrialisation of developing countries such as China and India has significantly increased global demand, resulting in large price increases for downstream industries and at times, bottlenecks in supply. The impact of this and other competitive pressures on some sectors of the European manufacturing industry, including the possibility of them being lost to lower cost countries outside Europe, has moved the issue of industrial policy and access to raw materials up the political agenda. A number of measures have already been announced by the European Commission to address these issues including: - The analysis of the competitiveness of individual industrial sectors, in order to understand their specific needs and take account of the particular opportunities and challenges they face.

The Research and development review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. The competitiveness of the US mining industry in a world market depends on many factors. The introduction of new and innovative methods, though, can have a significant, long-term impact. As industry cuts back its own long- term research and development efforts, the federal government continues to provide the major support for mining and minerals research. The US Bureau of Mines works with the mining industry and the academic community to develop innovative concepts for the mining and processing of non-fuel minerals. The Bureau’s research focuses on exploration and mining technology, minerals and materials science, processing technology, health and safety and environmental technology. Mine design A conical caving system, being designed by the Bureau, would allow the development of low-grade ore bodies, early startup at lower initial capital costs and increased safety and versatility in development and production. This method is a form of mass caving that allows the ore to be drawn from a central loading point at the bottom of the cone- shaped caving zone (Fig. 1). A simulation laboratory model and computer analysis show initial promise for predicted performance. For tabular, flat-lying ore deposits, the Bureau is investigating a version of the Finnish slot-and-fill system. For this total extraction method, a pattern of rectangular panels is laid out. One panel is extracted in a series of parallel slots and is replaced by alternating-row pillars of backfill. After one panel is mined, equipment and operations are transferred to another panel. By transforming this rectangular layout to a curvilinear geometry, one continuous spiral can be mined without re positioning equipment. Instead of parallel slots and pillars aligned in a rectangle, the slots and pillars are arranged in a spiral.

Enhanced concern for protection of the environment and attendant actions by environmental regulatory authorities in support of this concern are influencing to varying degrees the demand and supply of a range of industrial minerals in a number of jurisdictions. These influences take a variety of forms. In this paper, the author seeks to delineate certain broad trends which are occurring relative to industrial minerals and the environment and then, through a series of examples, outline opportunities, developments, and impacts respecting a number of industrial minerals produced and consumed in Canada and the United States.

Major gaps in understanding hydro- thermal systems remain after a century of studying fossil ore deposits and active geothermal areas. The periodically rejuvenated concept of "stacking" ore deposit types has never been verified by a continuous sample. Basal and marginal regions of both “fossil" and "active" hydrothermal systems normally lie beyond the limits of economic exploration, remaining inadequately exposed. Incomplete scientific under- standing of he vertical transitions clearly limits the efficacy of exploration programs for hydrothermal ores of all types. The Continental Scientific Drilling Committee's (CSDC) Panel on Mineral Resources has defined dedicated research objectives and add-on experiments to industry or government drill holes of opportunity.

The Inter-Island Tunnel is a 7.7 kilometer (25,160 foot) long by 3.5 meter (11.5 feet) diameter concrete lined tunnel through the Cambridge formation below Boston Harbor. Constructed as part of the Boston Harbor Project, this tunnel will bring untreated wastewater from the MWRA’s South System headworks facility at Nut Island in Quincy, MA to the new Deer Island treatment plant. A myriad of problems delayed the construction of the tunnel. These problems included salt water inflows of over 22,000 liters (5,812 gallons) per minute, a major fire in the access shaft, weak rock and soil collapsing on the tunnel boring machine, and hand mining operations.

This paper describes the innovative procedures employed during the construction of 3 deep shafts within the confines of New York City. The shafts, which varied in diameter from 1.8m (6ft) to 7.3m (24ft) and had an overall depth of 199m (650ft), were excavated by both mechanical and conventional methods. These were subsequently concrete lined, clad steel riser pipes installed and associated surface structures were constructed. Tricky surface rock blasting coupled with the unearthing of unexpected obstructions caused constant uncertainty during the excavation phase. In addition, the necessity of handling men and material in restricted yet deep openings required the development of a safer and more productive shaft construction procedure.

"The prediction of surface deformations due to underground mining operations has been a long recognized practice with case studies documented as far back as 1556 in Georgius Agricola's De Re Metallica (Latin for On the Nature of Minerals). There is currently increased public awareness and regulatory scrutiny on the potential impacts of underground longwall and second mining operations, but this time the focus is placed on environmental impacts to overlaying bodies of water such as streams, rivers, wetlands, lakes, etc. (Karmis and Agioutantis, 2015). Community residents and environmental groups, as well as federal and state regulatory agencies, have often cited adverse stream impacts and demanded stronger measures and scrutiny in issuing mining and reclamation permits (Booth, 2006). Mining companies are required to focus on the protection of sensitive bodies of water through the monitoring of stream flow and water quality, management and rehabilitation techniques, as well as the adoption of ""no mining zones,"" which potentially sterilize large portions of minable coal reserves. This paper examines the use of an empirical modeling approach for the protection of surface streams based on evaluation of ground strain magnitudes. Utilizing enhanced features of the Surface Deformation Prediction Software (SDPS), ground movements can be predicted accurately in the vicinity of surface bodies of water. The modeling of ground movements can aid in establishing optimum extraction sequences, while the magnitudes of anticipated subsidence can be used in the evaluation of mitigation plans when undermining surface bodies of water. INTRODUCTION When utilizing high recovery underground mining methods, such as longwall or room-and-pillar mining, the movement and deformation of the overburden propagates toward the surface and may affect the integrity of overlying surface streams (Peng et al, 1996). Published studies cite three major mechanisms of subsidence as most likely to impact streams: displacement, slope, and strain. While subsidence-induced vertical displacement cause little structural damage to the stream bed, it may create adverse drainage and stream flow issues as the subsidence trough allows for ponding (Dawkins, 2003). Subsidence initiated changes to the slope, or tilt, of a stream may have adverse effects on water flow. As the stream enters the subsidence trough, the gradient increases providing potential erosion control problems. When exiting the subsidence trough, a reduction of the gradient may inhibit stream flow, causing localized ponding (Peng, 2008). While vertical displacement and tilt both may have detrimental effects to surface streams, subsidence induced strains have been documented as being the most damaging to surface streams and structures causing distortion, fractures, or failure (Singh, 1992). When stream beds are subjected to high tensile strain, tensile cracks may form at the surface level allowing for the direct loss of stream flow through fissures. When stream beds are located in areas of high compressive strain, rock layers forming the stream bed can fail as the stream bed, ""ruptures,"" upward blocking stream flow or having the stream diverted into the facture zone at the base (Iannacchione, et. al., 2010)"

A review of the advantages and disadvantages of plasma technology for metal and mineral wastes is presented. Examples of the use of plasma systems are given and possible future uses are outlined. Among the potential uses are treatment of electric arc furnace (EAF) dusts, the vitrification of nuclear wastes and the removal of toxic metals. Over the past few decades, plasma technology has been studied for potential applications over a wide range of metals/materials processing areas. One promising area of plasma technology applications is the treatment of industrial hazardous waste. The potential generation of hazardous and toxic waste by various industries has become a matter of public and political awareness. Environmental regulations have put stringent toxicity emission limits on disposable waste streams. An intensive research effort is currently underway in the area of hazardous waste treatment.

Silver-copper-zinc mineralization is confined to metasomatically altered late Paleozoic and Cretaceous sediments consisting predominantly of limestone, siltstone and sandstone units. Mineralized alteration halos are spatially and presumably also genetically related to the emplacement of a Cretaceous quartz monzonite stock. Several generations of ore formation and alteration took place. Distribution of skarn and ore was influenced by intrusive contacts, calcareous horizons and by relatively less permeable rock units which served as barriers. Most of the ore bodies form conformable near horizontal mantos but some follow steeply dipping monzonite dikes. Structurally controlled alteration pipes connect the mantos locally. The deposit is strongly affected by mineralized fault and breccia zones.

Open Pit Mine Production scheduling under commodity price uncertainty suffers from an exponentially increasing problem size as simulations and real options flexibility are used to generate and evaluate multiple production schedules. Robustness evaluation techniques attempt to evaluate a production schedule that is generated on a single set of economic parameters against several varying prices and sources of uncertainty. This approach is invalid as the corresponding optimal LOM mine plan will change for each set of evaluation parameters. Using commodity market futures and treasury bonds as production schedule economic input parameters provides fully price and time-value-of-money risked scheduling parameters that maintain a deterministic problem size. This paper will provide comparative analysis of project NPV’s coming from traditional price uncertainty evaluation based on a single fixed LOM mine plan using varying prices versus evaluation based on varying LOM plans that are both generated and evaluated using varying prices. When cross evaluating constant price mine plans against simulations, the upside potential and downside risk of a project are significantly misrepresented. INTRODUCTION The life of mine (LOM) production scheduling problem seeks to answer the question of from where and when to extract a given block within the ultimate pit limit as well as where and when to process it. Solving this problem takes into account the constraints of extracting any particular block while seeking to maximize the net present value (NPV) of the mineral asset as a whole. A direct driver of the value of a block, and there for the entire asset, is the market price of the commodity in question. Complications arise when an optimal production schedule is attempted to be solved under price uncertainty. Many solution methodologies have been proposed in an attempt to optimize under this criterion, yet there are three salient aspects that are overlooked during this process. They are: • Generating a single production schedule and evaluating it against many simulated price paths. • Failing to understand the mechanism describing particular commodity price behavior • Inappropriate risk adjustment In an effort to address these aspects of production scheduling under commodity price uncertainty, we propose a methodology to define the economic parameters as input that is applicable to most if not all production scheduling approaches. This methodology will not only simplify the production scheduling process in terms of establishing block value but utilizes the risk adjustment of real options valuation to avoid the arbitrary blanket risk adjustment of traditional discounted cash flow valuation. Our findings conclude that attempting to optimize around individual price paths is futile and using a market risk adjusted single price forecast provides a justified economic basis for production scheduling while maintaining the same problem size as a deterministic production scheduling problem.

INTRODUCTION The Idarado mine lies high in the San Juan Moun¬tains on the divide between the Uncompahgre and San Miguel Rivers and consists of a consolidation of a number of old and prominent mining properties through which course some famous and very produc¬tive veins. Among the better known are the Smuggler, Tomboy, Montana-Argentine, Black Bear, Liberty Bell, Virginius, Flat, Barstow, and Japan, as well as many others. Most of these veins have been extensively mined over the past century and in the last three decades the Montana-Argentine and Black Bear veins have been the backbone of the Idarado mine; therefore, the descrip¬tion of the veins is limited to them. Access to the mine is through either the Treasury tunnel, whose portal is below Red Mountain Pass on US Highway 550 at an elevation of 3244 m (10,643 ft), or the Mill Level tunnel entrance 3.2 km (2 miles) east of Telluride, CO, at an elevation of 2761 m (9060 ft). The Treasury tunnel intersects the Black Bear vein 2643 m (8670 ft) from the portal and the Mill Level tunnel intersects the Argentine vein 2179 m (7150 ft) from the portal. Mining is by shrinkage stoping from slusher sublevels. The size of the scope blocks varies somewhat, but the standard size is 67 to 76 m (220 to 250 ft) long and 61 to 76 m (200 to 250 ft) high. The mine ranks either first or second in Colorado in yearly production of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc. It is 9.6 km (6 miles) from the Red Mountain plant to the Pandora plant, via interconnecting drifts and raises. There are engineering offices at both plants as a matter of convenience. The Red Mountain plant in¬cludes the company general offices, warehouse, carpen¬ter and machine shops, and mine change room. The Pandora plant consists of the mill and assay office, ma¬chine shops, and mine change room. The flotation mill has a capacity of 1632 t/d (1800 stpd), making a bul¬lion product and separate concentrates of lead, copper, and zinc. HISTORY OF THE MINE The Montana-Argentine vein was first extensively worked by the Tomboy Gold Mines Co., Ltd., a British concern. This company mined the stoped areas above the Ophir level between 1910 and the late 1920s and most of the stoped areas above the 2100 level between 1900 and the late 1920s. Gold was the principal ore metal mined. The area between the Revenue and Ophir levels was mined chiefly by the Revenue Mines Co. between 1900 and 1910. The ore was worked from the Revenue tun¬nel, which portals in Canyon Creek. Gold and silver were the chief metals recovered. The stopes between the 1700 and Revenue levels, as well as some higher stopes, were mined by Telluride Mines Inc. during the 1940s. The Mill Level tunnel was driven by that company from 1945 to 1948. Lead and zinc then became economically more important than the precious metals. In 1953, Idarado purchased Telluride Mines, which merged with the parent company in 1956. The Black Bear vein was first extensively worked by the Black Bear Mining Co. in the 1900s and by the Colorado Superior Mining Co. from about 1914 until snowslides at the mine camp [altitude 3750 m (12,300 ft)] terminated the company's operations in 1924. Leasers operated at intervals until 1934. The Treasury tunnel, formerly the Hammond tunnel, had been started before 1900 and reached the 1646-m (5400-ft) mark early in the 1900s, at which time activity lagged until the late 1930s. In the early 1940s, Idarado extended the Treasury tunnel from its heading at 1646 m (5400 ft) to the Black Bear vein and established a raise connec¬tion with the 600 level, the lowest level in the old mine. Since completion of initial work in the mid-1940s, systematic development of the mine, both in the driv¬ing of new headings and the utilization of older open¬ings, has resulted in the present extensive network of workings. GEOLOGY Introduction The oldest rocks of the area are the Precambrian metamorphic rocks, the Uncompahgre formation which are massive quartzites, some phyllites and slates, and dolomitic or limestone beds. West-dipping Paleozoic and Mesozoic strata lie on the Uncompahgre formation. These units are separated by a major angular uncomformity from overlying, essentially horizontal, Tertiary formations that include the basal Telluride conglomerate and several thousand feet of overlying volcanic rock. Intrusive rocks, mostly Tertiary in age, are common in the area, and are in the form of dikes, stocks, and sills. Dikes are very closely associated with some of the ore veins (Mayer). Description of Veins The Black Bear and Argentine veins range from 0.6 to 7.6 m (2 to 25 ft) in width, but in most places are 1.5 to 2 m (5 to 7 ft) wide. They vary in character from a well-defined tabular structure between sharp "frozen" walls, or gouge seams, to an irregular zone of quartz and quartz-sulfide stringers. Many gouge seams within the veins make the veins blocky and loose. Common gangue minerals in the veins include quartz, pyrite, rhodonite, chlorite, sericite, clay minerals, epidote, calcite, adularia, rhodocrosite, fluorite, and specularite. Quartz constitutes 60 to 70% of the veins and varies widely in character, ranging in color from clear through white, gray, and green, to amethyst. Chlorite, sericite, the clay minerals, and fine-grained quartz are common alteration products of the vein walls and of wall rock fragments in the veins. The alchemists of old are remembered well for their tireless efforts in attempting to convert various common metals, such as lead, into gold. Not so well known generally, but no less intense, have been the efforts of certain individuals who attempted to manufacture diamonds over the last 100 years. Diamond, the most glamorous and permanent of gems and the hardest industrial abrasive, is carbon in a high-density unique crystalline form with a cubic structure and a density of 3.5. This contrasts with graphite at a theoretical density of 2.2 and possessing a hexagonal structure. Diamond is the hardest natural, material known and until very recently had no close competitor, natural or otherwise, with respect to hardness. The hardness of diamond exceeds that of any other industrial abrasive by a factor of approximately five. The early theories of diamond synthesis were rather vague. Since diamonds occurred in nature, man then looked to nature for clues as to how this might be accomplished. The original known diamond deposits of India are alluvial in character and provided little insight as to how diamond had been formed by nature, for in, these locales the diamonds have been washed by streams or carried by the glaciers long distances from the areas in which they occurred originally in the earth's crust. As a matter of fact, we are told that even today the locations of the mother ground for the Indian alluvial deposits are not known.

Silver is an economically important component of many complex, massive sulfide ores. Current beneficiation for these ores is almost entirely by flotation. Silver recovery often is low, but little is known about the flotation behavior of the silver-bearing minerals. Floatability studies were conducted using silver-bearing tetrahedrite and lead-zinc ore. The effects of xanthate collector concentration, conditioning time, potentiostatic control of the mineral potential, and pH on mineral floatability were evaluated. The floatability of the silver-bearing minerals was shown to depend on collector concentration and mineral potential. The effect of controlling mineral potential during the flotation process is discussed.

Agglomeration techniques have been successfully applied to commerical heap leach cyanidation operations for the recovery of precious metals from low-grade ores, mine wastes, and tailings. The major parameters important for successful agglomeration pretreatment of these feed materials are discussed. Several commercial agglomeration-heap leaching operations are described. Two of the operations converted from conventional heap leaching to agglomeration-heap leaching after coventional heap leaching proved unsuccessful. Heap performance before and after agglomeration is discussed. A fairly recent operation that began production using agglomeration-heap leaching technology is also described. Two operations that processed milled tailings by agglomeration are discussed. The tailings feeds could not have been economically processed by means other than agglomeration-heap leaching.

This paper describes the surgical removal of a 24 ft dia. Slurry Shield TBM entombed beneath one of the country’s busiest commuter rail interlockings, the Harold Interlocking in Queens, NY, and the construction of the interface to a cut/cover tunnel which extended the mined tunnel section. A sophisticated SOE was built around the TBM to support active track loads within 8ft. of the excavation. Once the TBM head and guts were removed, a full round CIP lining was installed connecting the existing precast tunnel liner to the C/C tunnel under construction. All this construction was done on a narrow island of land without road access nestled between 7 mainline LIRR/Amtrak rail lines.

Many organizations are realizing that continual improvement in health and safety relies on addressing the potential for various forms of human error. Of these, violations are often the most frequent form associated with accidents. These occur when an individual, or individuals, deliberately contravenes established and known safety rules. They have been associated with up to 90% of accidents and incidents in some industries and yet rarely receive the systematic attention they deserve in the promotion of safety. This paper presents underlying motives which cause violations. These can vary significantly from mine to mine and from job to job. Managers need some measure of attitudes to determine the underlying motives behind violations if they are to determine effective strategies for promoting safe behaviour. Questionnaires form the starting point to address attitudes and the motives behind rule violations. The choice of the most suitable questionnaire, however, will vary from organization to organization. Guidelines on the choice of questionnaire are offered.

Contract practices affect cost and schedule of tunneling works, impacting risk allocation between Owners and Contractors. The Authors compiled a dataset of projects constructed in the Toronto Area between 1990–2020 procured either Design-Build or Design-Bid-Build. Data were analyzed identifying independent cost variables across the two methods. Overall industry efficiency further comparison with historical information demonstrates the costs of engineering ongoing escalation due to rising trends in environmental requirements and public consultations stirred through modern communicative platforms. These hard to predict and estimate costs need to be included in the risks evaluated and managed by Owners and not by Contractors

Efficient flotation of fine phosphate minerals from a deslimed waste phosphate stream (-74 microns) has been achieved by both bench-scale flotation and by flotation with a 2-inch air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) unit. A sample was collected from the waste phosphate slime stream at the SF Phosphate Limited Operations near Vernal, Utah, for flotation experiments at University of Utah laboratories. The collector used was a mixture of fatty acid, petroleum sulfonate and kerosene. Bench-scale flotation test results show that the minus 15-micron particles have a significant adverse effect on phosphate flotation. When the minus 15-micron material was removed by a classifying hydrocyclone, improved flotation recovery and concentrate grade were realized. A bench-scale flotation recovery of 86 % with a concentrate grade of 16% P2O5 was obtained from classified waste slime (74 x 15 microns) feed material containing 11.3% P2O5 In contrast, a 90% P2O5 recovery was achieved with a concentrate grade of 16-18% P2O5 by single-stage ASH flotation. With a second stage of ASH flotation, a concentrate containing 23% P2O5 was realized at an overall recovery of 75%. These results indicate that the industrial application of ASH flotation technology for phosphate recovery from waste slimes is promising.
