According to Darcy?s law, the rate of filtration should increase with increasing pressure drop across a filter cake. In centrifugal filtration, the driving pressure is created by the centrifugal forces applied in the free water on the surface of a filter cake. However, the pressure drop can become negative when the free water surface disappears, which makes it difficult to achieve low cake moistures. In hyperbaric centrifugal filtration, this problem is overcome using air pressure to restore the pressure differential. In the present work, various mineral and coal fines have been subjected to hyperbaric centrifugal filtration tests. The laboratory tests show that the moistures of various mineral fines, such as copper and zinc concentrates, phosphate, talc, kaolin clay, and precipitated calcium carbonate, can be reduced substantially below that achieved by conventional centrifuges. Similar promising results have also been obtained with various coal fines in laboratory and pilot-scale test programs and in full-scale plant demonstrations.

This paper presents an analytical technique for prediction of the damaged rock zone (DRZ) around a circular drift subjected to an anisotropic stress field (analytical solution exists only for the case of hydrostatic stress field). The method can readily be adapted to micro or personal computers. Stress concentrations around the drift are calculated at the centers of small rock elements, using the analytical solutions for a hole in an infinite plate. Potential failure of a rock element is assumed to be governed by the Coulomb failure criterion. When the failure condition is exceeded for an element, the excess shear stress is transferred to the neighboring elements. Progressive failure is allowed to occur until convergence is obtained. The final configuration of the damaged rock zone so obtained can be used to assess rock support requirements, as well as modified modulus and permeability of the DRZ.

The Silver City mining region is located in Grant County, southwestern New Mexico (Fig. 1). This area is well known, having produced large tonnages of base and lesser amounts of precious metals over the past several years. Mining within the region continues today, as well as exploration activity, which seems to have been on the increase since the recent discovery of a large skarn-associated Zn-Pb-Cu replacement deposit near Pinos Altos, a mineral district within the region (McKnight and Fellows, 1978). Because the Silver City area contains a number of mineral districts and retains promise for additional deposits, as suggested by widespread hydrothermal alteration and favorable igneous rocks, it was selected as the focus of two independent geochemical studies, both seeking to enhance anomaly-to- background contrast in order to improve our abilities to detect blind metal deposits or subtle manifestations of near-surface occurrences. The first of these independent studies involved the systematic sampling of those secondary Fe-Mn oxides that occur within coatings, selvages, and fault fillings, and then the selective extraction of these oxides from the host-rock matrix by chemical methods. The second study sought to isolate clastic Fe-Mn-rich materials from the heavy fraction of stream alluvium. The ultimate source of the clastic Fe-Mn oxides is presumed to be the same coatings, selvages, and fault fillings sought by the direct sampling of joints, but has been transported as a result of lateral erosional processes.

The refractory materials industry provides the largest commercial market for nonmetallurgical grade bauxite. Refractory grade bauxite is prepared from bauxites having low iron, titania, and alkali content by calcining at temperatures near 1,650° C. Although there are substantial bauxite reserves in the world, premium grade bauxite ores suitable for use in refractory applications are limited to only a few specific sources, primarily in Guyana and the People's Republic of China. Consumption of bauxite for refractory use is closely associated with the production and consumption of primary metals, in particular iron and steel. Barring major disruptions within the principal producer nations, sufficient supplies of refractory bauxite will be available to meet world demand well into the next century, and raw material costs will continue to determine the availability of markets for bauxite-based refractory products.

Simulation as a mathematical technique is not new. However, recent increases in digital computer speeds and the ease of programming with languages such as Fortran have centered a good deal of attention around simulation in the last few years, Many sophistications of the method have been developed during this time. However, the ability to simulate mathematically still hinges on the ability to ignore unimportant details which would complicate the mathematics and make simulation impractical, Thus, with this attitude in mind, it becomes very easy to design a pseudo- simulator which will predict average conditions very well, but can not truly allow a detailed study of the system being simulated. Most simulations fall into this category, along with the case mentioned here. This paper is not intended to be a critical treatise of the simulator used to study a particular mining system. Instead, it will be used to illustrate the aspects of simulator development. The steps in the development of any simulator are described, along with same detail of the phosphate mine simulator itself.

To properly analyze and apply mining equipment, a systematic, current, inclusive, and simple classification scheme is required. This paper provides such a classification for Roadheaders. This Roadheader classification is based on factors, such as the rock cutterhead, the boom type, and the chassis configuration. It first assigns Roadheaders as an equipment type within the larger group of Integrated Excavators. The Roadheader type is then delineated into the following subtypes: the standard, the extended boom, the tunnelers, and the miscellaneous. Next, these subtypes are devolved into kinds, and finally variants and attachments are considered. To resolve inconsistencies in characterizing the Roadheader, cross-referencing is employed within the classification scheme.

An overview is provided of Franklin Industrial Minerals mica mine and plant operations located near Velarde, New Mexico. Operated by Franklin Industrial Minerals since July of 1990, several process and product modifications have been developed and instituted to improve the operation. In addition to a brief history of site operations, descriptions of the mining, beneficiation, delamination grinding, and product classification processes are reviewed. Supportive topics discussed include equipment modifications and improvements, product application diversification, and specific product characterization. Also reviewed are the key areas of safety, environmental responsibility, and programs pertaining to process quality control and product quality assurance.

Precambrian granitic pegmatites on the west, south west, south and southeast slopes of Storm Mountain, Larimer County, northern Colorado, were explored and mapped geologically 1956-1959. The area between Crystal Mountain Mining District on the north and Hyatt pegmatite mine area on the south was nearly inaccessible until a company built an access road, which was completed in 1959, into Roosevelt National Forest and its jeep-type roads. The area is extremely rugged, rising from some 6,000 feet on the highway at Drake, on Big Thompson River, to an altitude of over 10,000 feet at the summit ridge of Storm Mountain. Almost innumerable pegmatites of every possible type of granitic pegmatite intrusion infest the Precambrian gneisses and schists of the southwest-tilted fault block of Storm Mountain. The major bodies stand at least 100 to 200, feet high above the surrounding forest floor. Core drilling has shown that some extend to at least 200 feet below the surface. They blunt out at the southwest, some keel out below and others are faulted out at their southwest ends. Strike length ranges from 200 to 600 feet. The massive bulky bodies have nearly vertical walls. Contents are zoned or ribboned and layered. They consist of local commercial bodies of beryl, potash feldspar, mica, uranium minerals and quartz. As yet no lithium minerals have been encountered.

If you don't know a gauss from a grasshopper, you may be better off than you, think, particularly if you're an ore dressing engineer charged with the responsibility of selecting magnetic equipment for minerals separation and beneficiation. Gauss is a unit of measure for a magnetic field. It indicates the number of imaginary lines of force per square centimeter or per square inch radiating from a magnet. In discussing the strength characteristics of a magnet, we have come to speak of a magnetic field of 800 gauss, for example, meaning 800 lines of force per square centimeter. Gauss became the standard for selecting drum type separators many years ago under an arbitrary set of circumstances. The standard has continued to this day even though magnetics applications engineers have long considered it inadequate. The configurations of the older gauss meter were such that the most accurate and convenient readings on a drum type separator could be made at distances greater than one inch. So, an arbitrary distance of two inches was established and that two inches became the standard. Since then, it has become commonplace to specify magnetic strengths for drum separators according to average gauss readings at two inches; for example 500 gauss average at two inches, 750 gauss average at two inches and so on, even though gauss readings at two inches have much less to do with the separating and beneficiating function of a given application than was formerly believed. The standard was adopted as a means of gauging the strengths of electromagnetic drum type separators, for they were the only ones around at the time. These machines were usually designed with no magnetic considerations other than that the material to be separated should be agitated vigorously and the magnetic fields should be deep and strong. Drums built this way performed well enough, so it seemed logical to measure their magnetic strengths. Hence, gauss at two inches. Now, new improvements in magnetic techniques have made average gauss measurements at 2 inches positively obsolete.

INTRODUCTION In order to understand the transport and deposition of radon daughters in mine atmospheres, it is necessary to know the variation in the attachment of the daughter atoms to particles as a function of particle size, composition, number density, relative humidity, temperature, and radon concentration, the free gaseous diffusion coefficients of the daughters, and the variation in the mass transfer of the activity, both free and attached to particles, to mine surfaces as a function of particle size distribution, surface roughness of the mine walls, and the flow conditions. If all of these parameters are known in a model system, it should be possible to understand the transport and fate of the airborne radioactivity in real mines under certain well-defined flow conditions. There have been a number of recent investigations of the attachment of radon decay products to particles 1-4, but there are still a number of unanswered questions regarding the process. However, it is clear that for most real mine atmospheres, the vast majority of the activity is attached to particles. The size distributions for the activity-bearing airborne particles have been studied 5,6, and it has been found that most of the activity resides on particles with diameters in the range of 0.05 µm to 0.3 µm with an average mass median diameter between 0.1 and 0.2 µm. The behavior of the unattached radon daughter species has also been recently studied[ 7], and many of the previous problems regarding the value of the diffusion coefficient for Po-218 have been resolved. A major problem in the understanding of the airborne transport of radioactivity in mines is the lack of detailed knowledge of mass tranfer to and fluid flow over rough walls under fully developed turbulent flow conditions. This paper will report the progress on a project that is designed to obtained that information. MATHEMATICAL MODEL DEVELOPMENT Deposition of particles on smooth surfaces in turbulent flow has been extensively studied. A comprehensive review of these results has been prepared by Sehmel 8. There has not been such a comprehensive study of particle deposition on rough walls under such flow conditions. In recent years, only a single model has been proposed to explain such deposition 9,10 and in both of these papers the flow structure in the rough walled pipe was not taken fully into account. As part of the work being conducted on this project, a more complete model was outlined in a previous report [11]. The basic theory will be reviewed to provide a context for the flow measurements to be reported. The flux of particle deposited on the walls of a pipe in a turbulent flow is derived from the one dimensional form of Fick's law as given by [N = Dpdpp/dr (1) where N is the flux of particles deposited per unit area per unit time, D is the total eddy diffusivity of the particles, p is the airborne concentration of particles, and pr is the distance measured from the center of the pipe. The rate of deposition is best expressed by a deposition velocity Vp = NIP pb (2) where P b is the mean particle concentration in the sulk flow. The shear radius, V/ut and the shear velocity, u , are used to calculate a nondimensional distance, and velocity, respectively, where v is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. The nondimensional form of equation 1 is given by Vd = DP dpp(3) V dr+ where Pp = Pp/ Ppb(4) By integrating equation 3 from the rough wall stopping distance, S , to the center of the pipe, the deposition velocity can be obtained. In order to make this calculation, it is necessary to have accurate descriptions for the particle eddy diffusivity, stopping distance, and shear velocity in order to insure that the influence of the flow structure has been properly accounted for. Horizontal stresses are caused by global plate tectonic forces. During 1995 alone, they were largely responsible for closing two U.S. longwall mines. This paper presents six case histories from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Alabama. In each case history, a mine encountered roof falls or difficult ground conditions in the headgate, caused by horizontal stress concentrations. The problems are detailed, and the control measures adopted are described. In most cases, nearby longwall panels without stress concentrations were trouble-free. The paper also discusses detailed measurements made at two adjacent Pennsylvania longwalls. One headgate was oriented to avoid a horizontal stress concentration, and the other was not. Eliminating the stress concentration dramatically reduced roof support loads and roof deformation. The paper concludes that proper panel orientation and sequence is the key to maintaining headgate ground control. The optimum orientation is not parallel with the maximum horizontal stress, as previously thought, but rather 20° in the stress shadow of the gob. Other stress control techniques, including artificial support, are briefly discussed.

I am not a member of AIME, and this is my first annual meeting. As a lifelong member of the non-ferrous metals industry I have enjoyed listening today to speakers point with pride and view with alarm the public relations activity or lack thereof in the halls of government, as well as at the grass roots. There is much to be alarmed about, to be sure, but also some accomplish¬ments to be viewed with pride. Other speakers have given a broad overview of our industry's relations with their several publics. I will be specific about two incidents in which The Anaconda Company faced the loss of confidence of a large portion of its publics: the nationalization of our properties in Chile in 1971 and the closing of our under¬ground mines in Butte, which was announced last October. If I have a minute left over, I will speak about our concern for the loss of confidence in business institutions which has been re¬vealed in recent public opinion polls.

The first successful heap leach of silver ores in the State of Arizona has been under continuous operation since early 1976 at the State of Maine Mine, two miles southwest of Tombstone, Arizona. The silver produced from leaching old mine dumps at this property vas the first in the Tombstone mining district to achieve a 999+ purity. While cyanide leaching of silver and gold ores is a time-proven accepted practice, a relatively new method of treatment called "heap" leaching was employed. Heap leaching is a comparatively inexpensive fast way to recover precious metals from low grade material.

In June, 1981 the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) issued a report titled "Control Systems in Coal Preparation Plants" to determine the status of instrumentation and automation systems in the coal preparation industry. EPRI concluded that the control systems presently being employed in the U.S. coal preparation plants "are relatively primitive compared with those in other mineral processing industries; and analytical instrumentation is virtually non-existent". Until recently, clean coal has had a low selling price and satisfying the purchasers' specifications required only minimum cleaning. However, it is becoming more apparent that the increases in coalfired utility power plants forced outage rates are relative to the deterioration in the quality of fired coal. Utility companies are becoming aware of the economic value of reducing the variability of ash, moisture and sulfur in steam coal purchase orders. New contracts are currently being negotiated between electric utilities and coal producers that include provisions for increased penalties if the product does not meet specifications. With tighter specifications on the quality of steam coal, interest is increasing in more sophisticated control systems. One type of device that is currently assisting the preparation plant operator optimize and control the coal cleaning process is nuclear based instrumentation. Nuclear instrumentation includes methods for measuring weight, level, and density as well as for performing elemental analysis on coal. This paper discusses the various types and applications of nuclear instrumentation currently in use in the coal preparation industry.

Flowsheet flexibility in new 750 TPH coal cleaning plant provides three unusual capabilities. Two compartment drum coarse H.M. washer can be adapted to provide two stage separation. Coarse section of plant can be operated without fine section when washing surface mined coal. Fine section can operate with flotation cells bypassed if strip coal oxidation kills the froth. Plant can be fed by belt from bulk storage, front end loader from storage piles and truck from the mines. Raw coal and each of four washed products can be fed by belts to three separate loading points on two separate railroads.

Public Relations In describing public relations, a definition which is frequently quoted appeared in the PUBLIC RELATIONS NEWS, and is as follows: "The Management function which evaluates public attitudes, identifies the policies and procedures of an individual or organization with the public interest, and executes a program of action to earn public understanding and acceptance..' As you can see, this covers a "multitude of sins."

"INTRODUCTION Contemporary city is made of layers. Physical structures layers (built fabric, residential, commercial industrial etc. ), infrastructural layers (below and above ground), “green” layers (parks and open spaces), and also informational layers, i.e. connections, links, between sectors of the city and other territories. The “city of layers” concept represents the exercise of “rebuilding the city” per each layer, highlighting those physical built structures that are functional to define a relation. For example, if consider the “connection” relation, the city is re-designed by considering only transportation built structures. The layer obtained in such fashion is hence the “transportation” layer, including below grade infrastructures (subways) and above grade lines (rail, bus, tramways etc.), as below shown in Figure 1.In this sense, the contemporary city is represented by separate constructs assembled together according to a specific functionality (e.g. “connection”). As a consequence, the relation between what is built underground, and the related above-ground development, can be perceived in his most evident appearance. What could happen within the contemporary city if the planning process would begin from below to above and not vice-versa?INTERACTION The question risen in the introduction is strategic when approaching the difficult task of designing (or re-designing) a multi-level organism like the contemporary city. Nowadays, the theme of integration between underground and at-grade master planning has become the subject of many urban renovation projects, where the design process has begun within the transportation layer, underground, and further developed by interacting with at-grade structures already existing or in phase of design.A series of case studies where below/above interaction plays a key role in the project will be further analyzed. Moreover, it is relevant to understand the mechanics of an urban transformation process that originates within the transportation layer and ends up with the design of entire sectors of the city. The Transit Oriented Development approach is a useful tool to clearly understand such transformation process. TOD has become, in particular in the last decade, one of the most effective tools for urban design, in order to solve simultaneously the many different instances related to transit planning, urban design and real estate market."

The critical surface tension of wetting values (Ye) of realgar (AsS), talc [Mg3si401o (OH) 2]' stibnite (Sb2S3), and sulfur (S) were determined by flotation in the absence of conventional flotation collectors as 38.7, 38.0, 35.5, and 30.0 dyne/cm, respectively. The surface tensions of flotation media were arranged by methanol. Separation of binary mixtures of these minerals was performed exploiting their Ye differences-which form the basis of the "ganuna flotation process". One step flotation test showed that sulfur floats preferentially from its mixtures with realgar and stibnite at recoveries of 73.6 and 70.7 % and grades of 81.7 and 91.2 %, respectively. The separation of stibnite from realgar gave a recovery of 4.1 % and a grade of 41.2 % for stibnite, indicate that a minimal Ye difference of 3.6±0.2 dyne/cm is essential for such separation when conventional flotation reagents are not used. This paper presents data and describes the approach employed in these separations.
