A comprehensive, site specific water management plan is of primary importance to the successful implementation, operation and decommissioning of any mining project. Formulation of a plan requires an orderly planning process consisting of identifying problems, establishing planning criteria based on the guidelines and requirements of regulatory agencies, and an iterative procedure of identifying, investigating, and evaluating plan elements and alternative plans. A typical uranium surface mine operation consists of a mine pit or pits, spoil pile areas, crusher, processing plant, and tailings disposal area. A water control plan addresses the problems of diversion of natural runoff from undisturbed areas around the mine; and diversion, collection, and treatment of runoff from within the mine area. A water control plan is required to determine the location and size of appropriate control and detention structures; their cost; and the schedule for permit activity, design, and construction. The plan must be formulated to meet the requirements of both the State and Federal regulatory agencies.

Predictive maintenance technologies including vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection, and electrical measurements have been applied to large electric mining shovels at Cyprus Sierrita. The predictive program was initiated by Cyprus Sierrita and P&H Mining Equipment at the Cyprus Sierrita Mine in Tucson, Arizona during August of 1996 on the P&H model 2300 and 4100 electric shovels. The utilization of these technologies has shown the potential for improving electric mining shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition based prioritization.

My presentation is from the viewpoint of the industrial mineral geologist, which is a relatively rare breed. Very few geologists become involved with industrial minerals for two reasons, I think: (1) Much of the industry utilizing non-metallic minerals has developed without the use of geologists in the begin¬ning and many of the management people, who generally derive from the processing plant supervision, tend to take raw materials for granted; and (2) non-metallic minerals are a very insignificant part of the curriculum of virtually all colleges granting a geology degree. One learns about the geology of industrial minerals by working with it. This "on-the-job-training" is probably best because it brings the geologist into close quarters with the production people and the production process. And the industrial minerals field has a distinctiveness when compared with the petroleum or metal mining field in that each deposit can yield a material differing in some aspect from that in any other or within the same deposit. The petroleum from a well in a given field will be similar to that from any other well, but a limestone on one side of a hill can differ signifi¬cantly in elemental composition, calcinability, soundness, specific gravity, or some other factor from the same ledge on the other side of the hill. This characteristic of almost certain variability creates problems sooner or later and provides for much of the employment of industrial mineral geologists. My job seen from the viewpoint of management is "Find us some rock we can extract and process at a profit." The industrial non-metallic geologist has much the same problems and approach as a detective. I do not mean the TV variety with the big mouths and the unfailing knack of spotting the wanted criminal immediately in a city of ten million people. Any real detective will tell you it takes leg-work, knowhow, and persistence to make a case. The same is true for the geologist who finds rock which can be quarried at a profit. The SIMAN (SIMulation ANalysis) computer language is a general-purpose, discrete-continuous simulation language for modeling a variety of multi-component systems. The language has been described by its author in a textbook (Pegden, 1985) and in a paper (Pegden, 1986) and is available in a mainframe version, a minicomputer version and a microcomputer version. The language was designed for and has been extensively used for modeling manufacturing systems but possesses many features that are advantageous in the modeling of mining materials handling systems. Consequently, the authors have applied the language to the simulation of an open pit shovel/truck operation to test its usefulness for simulating mine materials handling systems. This paper presents a short background on simulation languages, the capabilities and modeling framework of the SIMAN language, a description of the application of SIMAN to a shovel-track operation and some results and conclusions on the use of the language for mining materials handling systems.

Predictive geochemical and limnologic modeling of pit lakes is an important aspect of modern permitting. One of the key assumptions of many predictive pit-lake models is that highwalls and pit backfill become unreactive once submerged by the filling pit lake. Existing pit lakes provide useful data to test this assumption. The Sleeper pit lake (northwestern Nevada) is near hydrologic equilibrium and contains good-quality water that generally meets regulatory requirements for pit lakes. Despite the overall stable geochemical composition, seasonal trends in the hypolimnion indicate the generation of solutes and fluctuations in pH. This work applies mass balance, analysis of subaqueous pyrite oxidation, and trends in solute concentrations to evaluate the potential causes of long-term solute generation in the hypolimnion of the Sleeper pit lake. Results will aid in refining the effect that inundation of highwalls and waste rock has on ultimate pit lake chemistry and long-term closure planning. In the case of the Sleeper pit lake, ongoing solute loading does not substantially change the closure plan at this time as influent groundwater contains abundant alkalinity. INTRODUCTION As mine pit lakes become more widespread, regulatory agencies are increasingly requiring advanced predictive modeling of pit-lake geochemistry during permitting. The end goal of all those involved in these permitting actions (i.e., the mining company, the regulatory agencies, and the public) is to have pit lakes become geochemically and hydrologically stable for the long term, which may then allow mining permits to be relinquished. The modeling endeavors therefore are important to inform long-term closure of pit lakes. The conceptual models and numerical methods used to predict pit-lake water quality are complex and require substantial amounts of data and a variety of assumptions (Castendyk et al., 2015). One of the common modeling assumptions is that solute generation via acid mine drainage is eliminated (or at least decreased) by the filling of the pit lake and inundation of highwalls and any in-pit waste rock. However, few studies have reported on observations that support or refute this assumption. The water-quality record of the Sleeper pit lake is an ideal dataset with which to test these assumptions. The former Sleeper mine is located in northwestern Nevada (Fig. 1), and has been inactive (in terms of ore extraction) since 1996. The mine extracted Au and Ag from the famous high-grade Sleeper vein and associated widespread stockwork mineralization (Nash et al., 1995). Water quality in the pit lake has been monitored since the cessation of dewatering in 1996. The current pit lake actually occupies three separate sub-pits, the Sleeper, Wood, and Office pits (Fig. 1). The Sleeper and Wood pits undergo regular water-column monitoring using a conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) probe, and sampling for dissolved inorganic constituents at several depths (~10, ~130, and ~330 ft. below lake surface). Groundwater quality is also monitored using a series of wells (Fig. 1).

INTRODUCTION Shabanie mine, situated some 180 km east of Bula¬wayo, has been a producer of chrysotile asbestos for more than 50 years. The ore bodies occur in serpentinized dunite, which overlies talc-carbonate schist. A zone of relatively competent rock of varying thickness occurs between the schist and the ore bodies, which are gen¬erally less competent. The hanging wall of the ore bodies is economic, and the hanging-wall serpentine carries a variable subeconomic amount of fiber. It is important to note that, in general, the ore body competence is less than that of the foot and hanging-wall formations. Historical After surface operations ceased, cut-and-fill stoping was used to win ore from underground; this was success¬ful until the increasingly stoped-out area caused insta¬bility in the stope pillars and back. Consequently, dur¬ing the early 1950s, a gradual change to cave-mining methods was made, the ore being won by hand lashing in drawpoints, situated in the basement of the stope blocks, and passed through orepasses under gravity to the haulage level some 13 m below. About this time, interest was focused on the sub¬level caving method in use in Swedish iron ore mines: it was felt that it might be applied economically to the Shabanie ore bodies. Accordingly, in 1958, an experi¬mental stope block was laid out in which sublevel inter¬vals and extraction tunnel spacing were 9 m. The tun¬nels (ring drilling drives) were oriented on strike-in contrast to the Swedish system, in which crosscuts that retreat from hanging to footwall are used. The advantages of the method were quickly appre¬ciated by the operating personnel and, despite the in¬evitable teething troubles pertaining to the introduction of any new mining method, it was not long before sub¬level caving was providing a high proportion of the mill feed. The disadvantages also became apparent at an early stage, however, and, from that time to the present, continuing modifications have been made to mining lay¬outs in an effort to improve ore recovery. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF METHOD The mine is served by a vertical hoisting shaft, in which two skips, a man cage and a service cage, provide adequate capacity for production requirements. The rock hoist is a Ward Leonard control hoist, in which two electric motors drive a common gearbox. The man winder is driven by an a-c motor. Several auxiliary shafts provide secondary egress and intake and return ventilation. Main haulage levels are above (Fig. I a and b). Blasthole fan patterns are drilled by drifters of 100 mm bore, drilling 41-mm holes; when a sufficient strike length has been drilled, a slot is cut in the upper¬most sublevel and the rings are broken into the slot. Initially, a limited tonnage is drawn, since it is essential to ensure that the hanging wall caves behind the retreat¬ing stope face. Once this has been established, maxi¬mum tonnage can be drawn, as described later in this chapter, under the heading "Draw Control." The broken rock is loaded by 0.14 and 0.20-m3 load¬ers into cocopans (rocker-dumping type of tipping truck), which are hand trammed to orepasses, discharg¬ing on the haulage where 11-t electric trolley locomo¬tives haul 3.95-m3 Granby cars to the main shaft bins. As is evident from Fig. 1, the layout is simple, the block is brought rapidly into production, there is a high degree of selectivity and flexibility, and the result is a low-cost high-productivity mining method. DEVELOPMENT Main haulages are developed at 3.2 x 3.2 m, and once the service winze connections have been completed the development of the sublevels is undertaken. The footwall drives are cut first, to obtain access to the block. These ends are of the standard section, 2.4 x 2.8 m, and from them crosscuts at intervals of 70 m are driven through the ore body to the hanging wall. These crosscuts are used to supplement the geo¬logical information previously obtained from diamond core drilling, and they provide additional and more de¬tailed data on fiber percentages and lengths, structural features, and other relevant criteria which are used to build up the geological assessment of the area and to classify it in terms of the geomechanics rock classification (Laubscher and Taylor, 1977). The crosscuts also allow the necessary orepasses to be sited conveniently so that tramming distances from the loading points are not excessive. Development Drilling Once the skeleton development has been completed, the extraction headings are developed at 2.4 x 2.4 m as shown in Fig. 1. Standard development practice is to use crews of a machine operator and his helper, equipped with air-leg mounted jackhammers, to drill rounds of 1.8 m with integral tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. Three high performance TBM's equipped with large diameter (483mm) disc cutters are currently operating in Norway. This paper summarizes the design philosophy, field performance and ongoing technical development of these cutters. Included are discussions of the early problems encountered with their usage and the solutions to these problems that have been developed. Also included are discussions of the penetration rates and cutter usages observed. From this data it is concluded that high performance TBM's with large diameter cutters can produce significant improvements in both overall performance and in cutter costs under hard rock conditions.

"The air flow problems in open pit mines are complex. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models provide a detailed knowledge of the airflow pattern and velocity distribution, temperature, and pollutant concentration within an enclosed domain of the open pit. A range of turbulent model can be selected for varying complexity and accuracy. Pollutant transport models, however, differ in their assumptions and structure as well as in the algorithm they use; as a result, prediction varies from model to model. This paper presents a study of pollutant transport in an actual open pit mine under stable boundary layer. The objective is mainly to test two turbulence models using the same input conditions, model constants, and similar geometry. Measured data are used to compare results of the two CFD models, namely, the kappa-epsilon (?-e) model and the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model. Despite the complex synoptic situations, different meteorological input data and the fast changing conditions, the simulation results from both the models are in good agreement regarding the dispersion of pollutants.INTRODUCTION Modeling of contaminant transport under Arctic air inversion is an important step for an assessment of the amount of pollutants within the open pit. The Airflow in open pit mines is of larger scale and does not follow the principles of pipe flow. The air flow problems in actual open pit mines are thus far more complex. CFD models provide a detailed knowledge of the airflow pattern and air velocity distribution, temperature, and pollutant concentration within an enclosed domain of an open pit. There is no known application of CFD in three-dimensional modeling of air flow in large open pit mines. Two equation RANS kappa-epsilon (?-e) and Large Eddy Simulation (CFD) models, however, have been developed to solve the stable boundary layer (SBL) problems in Atmospheric Sciences (Baklanov 2000, Basu and Porté-Agel 2006, Dop and Axelsen 2007, Bandopadhyay et al. 2014). Because an exact flow situation in open pit mines is not known a-priori, it is therefore, necessary to investigate various turbulent models to identify the appropriate model that would simulate the flow phenomena with reasonable accuracy, and predict the contaminant distributions within the pit. Dispersion models differ in their assumptions and structures as well as in the algorithm they use and, as a result, predictions vary from model to model. Furthermore, it is also important to investigate the behavior of a CFD model in simulating a complex phenomenon such as the transport and distribution of contaminants in open pit mine under Arctic air inversion. The simulation of an enhanced period of turbulence in SBL is of particular interest because traditional air pollution dispersion models cannot explicitly treat such intermittent events, and yet the SBL is often the worst-case scenario in an open pit pollution transport"

A heap-leach field test was conducted during the 1993-1994 winter season at Carmacks, Yukon Territory, Canada. The purpose of the test was to demonstrate the viability of heap leaching Carmacks oxide copper ore in an arctic setting on a year-round basis. The test itself utilized a 5-m-diam crib loaded with 250 t of composite ore from the Carmacks copper deposit. The ore was stacked to a total height of 7 m in the crib, including 1 m of ore as an over- layer above the emitter system. This matched the plan for the commercial heap at the time when the test was started. The design also replicated an interior segment of the commercial heap. Leaching was done at a flow rate of 0.2 L/min/m2 using leachate at 21 °C. This temperature was maintained with no external heat input other than normal process heat transferred from electrowinning to the leachate via solvent extraction. Winter conditions were quite typical of those expected at the mine site. The temperature reached -54°C, while averaging -13°C over a three-month period. In spite of some flow system problems, leaching continued unabated, and freezing was limited to the insulating ore over-layer and isolated points near the outer crib walls. Thus, the test demonstrated that year-round heap leaching of Carmacks copper ore is practical in an arctic setting.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (FCMHSA) begins with this statement: "Congress declares that the first priority and concern of all in the coal mining industry must be the health and safety of its most precious resource -- the miner; . . ." At the Federal level this responsibility is shared by the Department of the Interior and the Department of HEW. The health research and standard setting activities under the Act are largely the responsibility of the Department of HEW, and with the exception of Title 4, Black Lung Benefits, have been delegated to our Institute, which I will refer to henceforth as NIOSH. In addition, we bear certain joint responsibilities with the Department of the Interior. These include dust sampling and respirator approval. To complete the picture, the Department of Labor has recently assumed Black Lung Benefit respon¬sibilities from the Social Security Administration under Title 4 of the Act.

Several mineralogical prospecting techniques are used in diamond exploration. Most are concerned with identifying indicator minerals such as garnet and ilmenite, which are derived from mantle xenoliths hosted by kimberlites. The first goal of such prospecting is to locate kimberlite intrusions; the second goal is to identify the diamond-bearing kimberlites. Explorationists have worked much less on the indigenous kimberlite phases. The kimberlitic opaque oxides, ilmenite and particularly spinels, promise to be useful in discriminating between intrusion episodes in identified kimberlites, and perhaps in the evaluation and prediction of diamond grades. Several petrologists have showed that spinel compositions and zoning patterns are specific to certain intrusive facies in South African and Canadian kimberlites. Careful evaluation may indicate a correlation between spinel parameters and diamond content.

Wastes in various forms have always been a part of mining, and management of mine waste has evolved from the early days of "push it over the side and down the creek" to today's highly engineered waste facilities. Changes have been brought about not only by technological advances in the ?3M?s? - mining, milling, and metallurgy - but also by environmental awareness and changing social values that have been manifested in an ever-growing maze of regulations. This is a dynamic era, and the debate goes on. So it is that planners have to anticipate permit and regulatory requirements in the site-selection process along with the traditional criteria. The McLaughlin gold project is an example of how one company, Homestake, has met this planning challenge. In August of 1980, Homestake Mining Company announced a major gold discovery in northern California known as the McLaughlin Project. The property is approximately 80 air miles northeast of San Francisco near the junction of Lake, Napa, and Yolo Counties. This is an area where mercury has been mined off and on for over 100 years; gold has never been mined in the area. The gold is microscopic and finely dispersed in a complex geologic setting. Reserves are estimated at approximately 20 million tons at a grade of approximately 0.16 ounces per ton.

Block caving, unlike most other conventional forms of mining relies principally on the natural forces within the rock mass to fragment and transport the ore. Obviously, not every orebody can be satisfactorily mined by block caving. In the early stages of mine planning an attempt should be made to assess the benefits of the block caving system relative to others, and develop a reasonable mining concept that may be used to provide preliminary information to mine planners and financial specialists. It is the intention of this paper to outline some basic geotechnical parameters that are essential to: 1) Assessing the feasibility of block caving an orebody and 2) Providing semidetailed information relative to mine design based on drill hole and other data.

This paper describes two new gas diagnostic techniques which have been used successfully to determine: 1) the combustion status of underground mines which have been sealed due to fire (Littol1 Ratio); and 2) the location of fires in abandoned, underground mines or waste banks (Kim Ratio). The Litton Ratio makes use of the rate of change of CO, calculated on both an air-free and methane-free basis, from mine gas samples and compares these values with those expected from a normal, combustion-free environment. The Kim Ratio uses the concentrations of total hydrocarbons, C2 ?C5, less the methane, to arrive at ratio values which increase as combustion intensity increases. The details of these two new techniques, their application to real situations, and their limitations will be discussed.

In southwest Wyoming lies buried the world's largest source of natural sodium carbonate, or soda ash. Perhaps a hundred billion tons of trona (sodium sesquicarbonate) are contained in ancient lake beds in the Green River basin'). There the Green River Formation encloses more than 40 extensive beds of trona. At least 25 of these exceed 3 feet (1 meter) in thickness and most of them are more than 300 square miles in extent. Five have been exposed in mines and lie between 800 and 1500 feet below the surface. Others lie at depths of from 400 to 3500 feet. Three companies have underground mines that supply trona to adjacent soda ash plants. These are the FMC Corporation, Allied Chemical Corporation, and Stauffer Chemical Company. A fourth, Texasgulf Corporation, has a mine under development. In 1974, annual soda ash capacity in the Green River area was approximately 4,300,000 tons, which requires the mining of about 7,500,000 tons of trona.

The Chino Mines Co., a Kennecott- Mitsubishi partnership, located in Hurley, NM, recently completed a $405 million modernization of its mine, concentrator, and smelter facilities. The mine/concentrator modernization commenced in 1980, and the smelter modernization began during 1982. Modernization of the mine and concentrator facilities involved increasing the mining rate from 98 kt/d (108,000 stpd) to 152.2 kt/d (167,800 stpd). Ore mining was designed to increase production from 20.2 kt/d (22,300 stpd) to 34 kt/d (37,500 stpd). A new concentrator was con- structed near the mine using semiautogenous grinding. The new smelter uses the INCO flash smelting process, increasing capacity by 40.8 kt/a (45,000 stpy) to 99.8 kt/a (110,000 stpy) of saleable copper.

The Institute of Applied Geology (I.A.G.), a joint project sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippine Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Programme (Special Fund) undertook during 1965-66 a number of field projects in Northern Luzon Island (Fig. 1). These field operations were of a two-fold nature: during approximately six weeks an orientation survey, involving, geology, geophysical surveying, and geochemical prospecting, was conducted over a partly developed, disseminated copper deposit at Sto. Nino (Fig. 1). The Sto. Nino study demonstrated (Hale and Govett, 19677 Govett and Hale, 1967) the feasibility of geochemical prospecting relative to other exploration methods for the location and delineation of disseminated copper occurrences, the major source of metal in the expanding mineral industry of the Philippines. The feasibility of exploiting a mineral deposit by developing a surface mine is closely related to the environmental protection and land reclamation costs. This issue has utmost importance for West Macedonia Lignite Centre (WMLC) of Greece, where there is still a lot of interest for opening of new mines and for further development of the existing open-pits. The decision-making process in these cases can be based on a decision tree that takes into consideration the various cost components of environmental management, the alternative solutions, the environmental permits and the cost reports of environmental management actions carried out so far. Moreover, the mine planning procedure is affected indirectly by numerous uncertain environmental and socioeconomic parameters, such as the delays caused by the bureaucratic procedures and the settlement of arguments in the Court.

A joint research program between the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines and Cyprus-Yampa Valley Coal Company is being conducted at the Foidel Creek Mine, Oak Creek, Colorado. This program goal is to study the effects of state-of-the-art, high-speed, automated longwall mining on health and safety, and primarily, ground stability under various geological conditions. The Bureau installed an automated data monitoring system, known as the Ground Control Management System (GCMS), to monitor in real-time the effect of rapid mining on pillar and face loading, stress redistribution in and around the longwall panel, and caving characteristics of the roof. The Bureau's GCMS, combined with the company's existing monitoring systems, which include environmental monitoring, a computer programmable conveyor belt system, and gamma ray roof control thickness indicators, has been effectively used to improve safety at the face, increase productivity, and reduce production costs.
