Twin 8.5 m diameter, 10 km long headrace tunnels under overburdens of up to 1870 m were excavated for the neelum jhelum hydroelectric project in north-eastern pakistan using two main beam gripper tunnel boring machines (tbms). Rock bursts were encountered and presented a significant danger to personnel and equipment. Micro seismic monitoring was installed to analyze rock burst characteristics and to create a database for future reference. Correlation of rock burst characteristics improved the ability to predict the likelihood, location, severity, and number of rock burst events. Although this paper has been entitled "Design of Embankments for Tailings Ponds and Waste Dumps," a better title might have been "Site Selection and Design Planning for Tailings Ponds and Waste Dumps," The procedures normally followed in performing the engineering calculations based upon the measured soil properties will not be detailed. Instead, we shall look at the subject in broader perspective which considers the environmental factors and the fundamental design principles. Disposal of waste materials left from the extraction and processing of mineral deposits has become, in recent years, an important engineering consideration for mine and mill operators. Land occupancy and land values almost everywhere are increasing at a rapid rate. So is the size of mine and mill waste dumps, thanks to our advancing technology in mineral beneficiation. Mining companies are being pressured to "clean up" their operations, both literally and in a safety hazard sense. Once, long ago, the miner could use any convenient location to get rid of his mine waste and mill tailings without being concerned over possible infringement on the rights and well-being of the public. Today, however, he must pay close attention to these matters if he wishes to avoid liability suits and the unfavorable reaction of civic groups as well as local and regional government. Most operators keenly sense their increased responsibility, not only because they are legally vulnerable, but because they realize the necessity for sharing space harmoniously with the rest of society.

Puerto Rico lies within the remnants of a deformed Cretaceous island arc system in the northeastern Caribbean. The Island can be divided into three broad geologic provinces: the Central Volcanic-Plutonic Province (Lower Cretaceous to middle Eocene), and the Northern and Southern Limestone Provinces (early Oligocene to middle Miocene). Known precious metal deposits are generally small and occur in veins and shear zones within Lower and Upper Cretaceous volcanic and plutonic rocks. Some Tertiary igneous rocks are also mineralized. Selected indications of disseminated lithology-controlled mineralization could represent larger deposits. Associated metals in some deposits include copper, zinc, and lead. At present, tax policies, population density, political outlook, and lack of proven significant precious metal deposits discourage the establishment of a metal mining industry.

Rockfall and unstable rock slopes can be effectively controlled by utilizing steel wire rope net systems, either as barriers or as slope draping. The chief advantage of such systems over rigid type barriers is the flexibility of wire rope netting, permitting kinetic energy dissipation, yet providing high strength and consequently low maintenance. A review of the design considerations involved with these systems, as well as a review of several mine and non-mine installations is presented with the hope that the information may contribute to the safety against the dangers of rockfall and other mine hazards in active and abandoned mines.

The requirement for large diesel equipment to be certified for operation in potential gassy mine conditions in western oil shale mines motivated a design engineering project to develop a dry exhaust conditioner system to replace traditional wet scrubber technology. A dry exhaust conditioner for a 600 hp diesel engine was designed and fabricated for retrofitting into a 600 hp underground haul truck. The engine conditioner package was taken through a simulated certification process at the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Approval and Certification Center to refine test procedures and to uncover any flaws in the dry exhaust conditioner technology. The engine/exhaust system was then installed in an underground haul truck to demonstrate mine-worthiness of the system. No inherent features were discovered that would prevent the system from meeting test requirements. However, the tests did point out several deficiencies in the prototype design.

The accurate prediction of mine profitability is essential for success in the present minerals market as is the ability to quantify the influence/of variations in revenues and costs on cash flow. A menu based spreadsheet template has been developed to determine annual cash flow, maintain depreciation schedules, and estimate labor and operating expenses. Sensitivity analyses may be conducted to determine the effect of productivity upon mining costs and the effect of selling price escalation upon rate of return. The advantage of this approach is that it can be used by a wide variety of professionals without extensive computer experience.

Mining can be categorized as a hazardous activity, considering some factors such as environmental conditions with a considerable presence of humidity, suspended particles, or falling rocks have affected the severity and number of accidents compared with other economic sectors. The industry analyzes incident reports to narrow the rate of severe injuries and fatalities, conducting root cause analysis and identifying leading indicators. As the International Council on Mining and Metals noted, the vast trove of incident data is not analyzed as much as possible due to a lack of analytics expertise at mine sites. However, machine learning could solve the problem of analyzing all the incident data in a no-timeconsuming way, considering the abundant data, and without using expert personnel in data science. Thus, a Convolutional Neural Network and a Naïve Bayes model were introduced to perform classification in the MSHA database. The database from 2020 consists of 60 fields to describe safety incidents; these fields include mine I.D., accident date, subunit (mill, surface), material extracted, and other metadata.

An effective elution technique has been developed for recovering uranium from ion exchange resins loaded in the carbonate leaching process. The procedure employs direct elution with acid. In comparison with conventional base elution, the procedure yields eluate of higher uranium concentration, results in a more complete elution, keeps the performance of the ion exchange resin at the fresh stage, reduces acid consumption, eliminates carbonate consumption and reduces waste for disposal. The technique has been successfully demonstrated in the field and patented. It lends itself to commercialization.

This paper summarizes results from an investigation into possibly the largest coal pillar failure in the USA. The newly opened coal mine worked an 3.35 m (11 ft) seam under overburden depth that ranged from 91 to 671m (300 to 2200 ft) . The mine main entries, and the enclosed pillars, experienced a massive slow squeeze. The squeeze could not be controlled and the mains were lost. A new set of mains were driven. Entry convergence (closure) measurements were carried out behind the advancing face to monitor stability. Pillar stresses were also measured under four different depths of overburden: 229.433, 472.579 m (750,1420,1550, and 1900 ft). The strength of pillars in the new mains was calculated from the loads that triggered the failure in the old mains, using three pillar strength formulas. The stress measurements showed that the new pillars supported more load than their predicted strength, indicating that current strength formulas are inadequate under deep conditions.

The magnetite orebody at Pea Ridge strikes NE-SH and dips at about 800 to the SE. The ore is high grade magnetite with a strike length of over 600-m and a maximum width of over 180-m on some of the levels. The shape and the mineral content of the iron orebody have been fairly consistent so far. The iron ore and surrounding basement rocks are Precambrian in age. These rocks are usually very competent, about 400-m of sediments lie over the ore.

The ever-increasing demand for steel and the subsequent depletion of high-grade ores requires the massive utilization of low-grade iron ores. In the present study, an iron ore slime sample containing 56.1% Fe was investigated using physical beneficiation, carbothermal reduction, and a microwave-assisted process; however, physical beneficiation and microwave exposure were found to be inefficient as they yielded lower iron recovery. Using coconut shell as an alternative reductant was found to be promising and does not lead to the formation of higher iron oxides, such as fayalite and wustite phases. The microwave-assisted carbothermal reduction was found at par with conventional reduction, saving time and heating. The optimum magnetic concentrate obtained in both carbothermal reduction routes (microwave and muffle furnace: Fe grade, Fe recovery, and yield of 64.3, 97, and 84%, and 67, 99, and 83%, respectively) are suitable for alternative iron-making or blast furnace units.

The solvent extraction of gold cyanide from alkaline cyanide solutions with monosubstituted guanidines, bis disubstituted guanidines and a tetrasubstituted guanidine was investigated. The guanidine functional group is protonated in alkaline solution and the guanidinium cation is stabilized so that the aurocyanide anion can be extracted even at -pH 12 if an appropriate carrier is used. Typical aprotic carriers including both aliphatic and aromatic solvents limit gold extraction by guanidines to pH 10; whereas the presence of an alcohol extends gold extraction to pH 12. UV spectroscopy suggests that the alcohol facilitates protonation of the guanidines, stabilizes the guanidinium cation, and facilitates gold extraction at high pH.

It is four years since the seminal study of demand for rapid excavation by the National Academies of Sciences (NAS) and Engineering outlined this technology's opportunities, requirements and significance to the challenges of urbanization and natural resource conservation. The demand study was quite simple. Opportunities were valued at market while requirements to produce new technologies were valued at cost. The significance of new technology in economic terms was measured by the net discounted gains to users over time. The Academy view in 1968 was that these gains, even most modestly estimated, appeared large enough to justify the bill for research proposed by that Committee (1). In 1970 the question of demands became international in what is recognized as the first international experiment in technological policy analysis, terminating in the Advisory Conference on Tunneling of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)(2). A monumental demand survey formed the basis for its economic assessment. The twenty-two OECD nations also made an impressive attempt to measure the magnitude of existing research and development efforts. In their recommendations periodical statistical demand forecasting and collection of demand data (Recommendation 1) was given central importance for public planning (Recommendation 2), the financing of public construction (Recommendation 3) and the encouragement of technological advance (Recommendation 4). Their program for international cooperation led to OECD's establishment of a Directorate for Environmental Affairs, and influenced the organization of the World Environmental Conference meetings now held in Stockholm under United Nations auspices. The AirBoss*200 is a unique ambient airflow sensor with important improvements in accuracy, especially in the critical low end, 0-61 m/min (0-200 fpm) where MSHA regulations apply. All solid state, its design is rugged, and there are no moving parts or delicate filaments. An on-board microprocessor calculates air velocity, linearizes and corrects for temperature, while driving voltage and current loop analog outputs to .3 meters/minute (1 ft/min) resolution. Recent developments also cover both positive and negative flow directions. Cohesive clay soil poses a significant risk to earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines (EPBM) due to unstable face pressure, clogging potential, high cutterhead torque, poor muck flow, low advance rate, etc. This paper details the performance measures desired when EPBM tunneling in clay soil, and the scientifically-supported conditioning methods to transform in-situ clay to a muck with such characteristics, giving particular attention to ground conditions. The paper then examines TBM data from multiple clay soil projects in the context of these performance measures to demonstrate the influence of cohesive soil conditioning on EPBM performance.

Utah statute defines sovereign lands as "those lands lying below the ordinary high water mark of navigable bodies of water at the date of statehood, and owned by the state by virtue of its sovereignty." The lands within the bed of Great Salt Lake (GSL) are, by this definition, sovereign lands, acquired at statehood in 1896 in accordance with the "equal footing" doctrine, granting each state control and ownership of navigable waters and the lands underneath those waters within its borders. Under public trust doctrine, the state, as trustee for the people, bears responsibility for preserving and protecting the right of the public to use of the waters for navigation, commerce, fishing, recreation, and wildlife habitat. Also by statute, sovereign lands are defined as "state lands," to be managed by "multiple use sustained-yield principles." The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands is given management authority for sovereign lands and, as manager, has responsibility to prepare comprehensive plans, initiate studies of the lake and its resources, implement comprehensive plans through state and local entities, and coordinate the activities of various divisions within the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands also has responsibility for management of mineral leasing on sovereign lands. The many resources on the lake--water, minerals, wildlife, recreation, archeological and historical values--are managed by as many state agencies which occasionally creates conflicts. The brines of GSL contain several ions that crystalize into valuable minerals during evaporation. The major ions in the lake are, in order of relative abundance, chloride, sodium, sulfate, magnesium, and potassium. Mineral products which are currently extracted from lake brines are sodium chloride, magnesium chloride brine which can be sold as flake magnesium chloride or further processed into magnesium and chlorine gas, and potassium sulfate. Mineral products which have potential for extraction include gypsum, sodium sulfate, and trace amounts of lithium, boron, and bromine. The GSL contained an estimated 4.3 billion short tons (st) (3.9 billion metric tons [mt]) of dissolved salts in 1998. Utah Geological Survey (UGS) estimates of the dissolved salt content in GSL have fluctuated from 4.0 to 5.5 billion st (3.6 to 5.0 billion mt) due to the dynamic conditions in the lake as salts are precipitated and redissolved, and due to the diversion of brines from GSL, such as the West Desert Pumping Project. The lake has four areas of varying salinity, separated by dikes or other man-made structures: north arm and Stansbury Bay brines at near saturation (25 to 27 percent total dissolved solids [TDS]); the main body of the south arm with concentrations ranging from 7 to 15 percent TDS as lake elevations fluctuate; the waters in Farmington Bay at approximately 3 to 5 percent TDS; and Bear River Bay at <1 to 7 percent TDS. The percent TDS in Bear River Bay fluctuates with lake level, and changes in Bear River inflow. The transfer of salts from the south arm to the north arm has raised questions about the viability of the mineral and brine shrimp industries. The UGS and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) continue to monitor salinities at designated sites on the lake to document changing lake salinity. A recurrent theme is that placement of dikes and diversions can have significant and rapid impacts on various conditions in the lake. Hydrocarbon resources on the lake are significant, but presently undeveloped. The hydrocarbons are low gravity (4 to 9 degree API) and tar-like, contain high nitrogen concentrations, and up to 12 percent sulfur. The unusual characteristics of the oil have been the subject of studies by chemists at Weber State University and University Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg. However, these resources are difficult, and at present, uneconomic to extract using current technology because of the nature of the hydrocarbons, and production in "an offshore, highly saline environment." Oolitic sand deposits make up many of the beaches and shorelines around the lake. Because of their high calcium carbonate content, oolites have been used by Magnesium Corporation of America (MagCorp) and its predecessors for acid neutralization and dike construction. Oolites are also used in very minor amounts in flower drying. The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining reports up to 130,000 st (118,000 mt) mined annually by MagCorp from U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands adjacent to GSL. Currently, there are twelve producing mineral leases which generated slightly more than $1,000,000 in royalties during calendar year 1998. IMC Kalium Ogden Corp. (IMC Kalium) produces potassium sulfate and magnesium chloride from brines concentrated through solar evaporation in Bear River Bay and Clyman Bay. By-product sodium chloride is transferred to IMC Salt, which packages and sells the salt. MagCorp produces magnesium metal from brines concentrated in Stansbury Bay. Cargill Salt produces sodium chloride from brines provided by MagCorp under a lease agreement. Morton Salt produces salt at the southeast end of Stansbury Island. Lastly, North Shore Limited produces cocentrated brines for use in dietary and mineral/vitamin supplements near Spring Bay in the north arm of the lake. Producers of magnesium, potash, and salt from GSL contribute significantly to the value of metals and industrial minerals in Utah. Together these companies contribute approximately $240 million in gross value, or 18 percent of the value of the state&apos;s nonfuel mineral production. Most of this production is exported.

I have been asked to talk to you this morning about phosphate marketing and distribution. In discussing this I will attempt to answer such questions as: What is phosphate? Where do we get it? What form is it and how do we sell it? How do we distribute it? How is it applied? And last, but not least, What about the future? To start with, phosphate is one of the three primary plant nutrients. It is the element essential for root structure of plants. Plants, like humans, need a balanced diet. Thus, the amount of phosphate required by individual plants is, in part, related to how much of the other nutrients are used. Virtually all soils contain a certain amount of available phosphates. Back at the turn of the century the most common source of additional plant nutrient, including phosphates, was from cattle manure. The use of chemical fertilizers is something that has grown significantly during the last half century, and in particular, the last 20 years.

The US17 Spring/Fishburne Drainage Improvements Project utilizes a stormwater conveyance tunnel system of approximately 8,250 LF. The tunnel system includes two intersecting tunnels of differing diameter at a 40-degree angle. The intersection was constructed in soft-ground conditions. This paper discusses the design, geotechnical concerns, initial ground support, and final lining construction. The tunnels utilized two soft-ground TBMs excavated at 15 ft and 11 ft with ribs & lagging initial support. The final lining consisted of unreinforced and reinforced cast-in-place concrete with polymer fibers. Concrete final lining was successfully completed in March 2020.

This market is threatened by nuclear and other competing fuel sources and by depressed all-rail unit train rates, The first step to develop the rail-lake transportation market consists of rate adjustments and tariff changes to force tighter scheduling of mines, railroad, port and boats, and thus reduce cost. The second step provides a surge pile at the port to eliminate most of the seasonal disadvantage of rail-lake movement and reduce car detention at the port to almost zero.
