Oxidation potentials have been measured in the presence of various concentrations of cyanide, ferrocyanide, and ferricyanide and ethyl xanthate at various values of pH and related to flotation response. Eh-pH diagrams are constructed and show that the formation of surface ferric ferrocyanide is probably responsible for depression when cyanide is added. The influence of cyanide in the depression of pyrite with xanthates as collector has been the subject of many investigations (1,2,3,4,5,6), and from these studies several theories on the mechanism of depression have evolved. Wark and Cox (7) and Gaudin(8) have suggested that the depressing effect is due to a competition of cyanide ion with xanthate ion for the surface. Cook and his colleagues (9,10,11) have explained this phenomenon in terms of competition between hydrocyanic acid and xanthic acid. Sutherland (12) has shown that both of these theories describe accurately the relation between pH value and cyanide addition at constant collector addition but fail to describe the relationship, between pH value and the amount of collector required to cause flotation. Taggart(12) suggested that depression in these systems is due to the formation of a reaction product between ferric ion at the pyrite surface and ferrocyanide ion derived from solution. Majumdar(4,6) has attempted to prove this hypothesis by measuring the contact angles of pyrite in the presence of 25 mg/liter ethyl xanthate and different concentrations of potassium ferrocyanide and ferricyanide. In all cases the contact angles were quite high up to pH 10; these results indicate that pyrite should not be depressed by either potassium ferrocyanide or ferricyanide. In view of these facts, Majumdar has assumed that the compound Fe(CN)2 forms at the surface.

"Creating stable, safe, constructible and cost effective support to openings in segmental linings is often an important component of successful delivery of a tunnel project. The many constraints on successful implementation include operational, spatial, geotechnical, structural, and constructability. Failure to address these adequately can lead to significant impacts on cost, schedule, and safety. With reference to past project experiences, this paper provides a guide to the most commonly deployed solutions and their pros and cons to help designers quickly identify the most appropriate solutions for a particular project, or act as a starting point for developing new and/or project specific solutions. It highlights the challenges that designers and contractors must address together for successful support of tunnel openings, and the constraints that arise. It then describes the common structural forms of support, and how each form can mitigate the constraints, allowing an effective opening support system to be implemented. INTRODUCTION While only a small portion of the total excavated volume of a typical tunnel, cross passages are often one of the most complex elements of a bored tunnel to construct. Cross passages in soft ground typically involve ground improvement, groundwater control, and multiple temporary support measures to ensure safe construction in ground that has been overstressed due to the construction of the running tunnels. Permanent lining construction requires careful detailing of waterproofing and reinforcement to support both long term ground and water loads and support the broken out rings of the main lining. While there is not a great deal of literature specific to cross passage construction, the main issues are discussed in some detail by Lawrence and Taylor (2011). However, the temporary support of the running tunnel segmental linings during cross passage construction is not always given the attention it deserves. The authors have been unable to find much literature on the design of such systems, much less the considerations that have led to a particular solution. Lawrence and Taylor only mention two potential methods of support. It may be easy to dismiss the opening support as an inconsequential item, but selection of the wrong support type can have significant impacts on both cost and schedule."

The financial implications of environmental liabilities are becoming staggering, particularly for mining companies. The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Record of Decision (ROD) list for Superfund mining sites has some pretty hefty financial commitments, such as the $10 million operable unit remedy for the Yak Tunnel at California Gulch (in Colorado) or the $40 to 60 million remediation at Bunker Hill (in Idaho). These costs are driven by the large volume and areal extent associated with historical waste management practices at mining sites. (It's difficult to have a low-cost remedy for a 20-square-mile site.) Unfortunately, there are other ways of generating environmental liabilities besides Superfund, such as non-compliance with Clean Air Act provisions, stormwater permits, or National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits. In the last 2 years, EPA has increased enforcement in its regulatory programs, which has resulted in increased fines and criminal actions. Leaders in other industries (primarily the chemical and manufacturing industries) are viewing environmental liabilities as a strong motivator to select engineering approaches carefully based on technical, legal, economic, and philosophical perspectives. Industry interest in waste minimization programs comes from the concept that it is economically advantageous not to create waste in the first place. Waste minimization programs typically balance increased front-end capital investment with the minimization of potential long-term environmental liabilities as a way to achieve the lowest total-or life-cycle-cost. A side benefit of waste minimization programs is that they tend to improve overall regulatory compliance. Waste management practices are also becoming philosophical, as evidenced by a May 11, 1992, Business Week article: Companies that incorporate innovative thinking on sustainable development will do more than clean up or prevent their own pollution. They'll make and distribute a product more efficiently than ever, worry about its lifelong environmental impact, plan for recycling, and get their suppliers on the bandwagon. This type of approach will require a new mind-set, new tools, and adjustments throughout the organization. A key aspect of waste minimization or life-cycle waste management programs is the incorporation of environmental costs into economic analyses that compare various waste management alternatives. However, the incorporation of environmental costs into an economic analysis can be more difficult than initially thought. As noted above, new tools-or even a new toolbag-are needed, such as new accounting methods that track and assign the true lifetime environmental costs of a particular product. One piece of the new toolbag is life-cycle cost analysis, which is discussed in this paper. To simplify the discussion, this paper looks at the total costs associated with a given mining site. The concepts presented in this paper, however, can be applied to any mine waste management decision. The ultimate extension of life-cycle costing, as presented in the Business Week article, is to include the potential environmental costs throughout the life of a metal. At this point, I am perplexed on why, let alone how, to include the potential downstream environmental costs (i.e., the costs associated with smelting, manufacturing, use, and recycle or disposal) throughout the life cycle of mined copper, lead, or zinc.

NTRODUCTION Surface subsidence monitoring is the most effective means for investigating the nature of, and developing the techniques for pre¬dicting the surface movement and deformation process. However, because of imperfection in survey equipment and field practices, the surface movement data collected from field survey are not error-free. Also due to lack of proper numerical techniques for computing surface deformation from the measured surface move¬ment data, a relatively large portion of the subsidence data col¬lected could not provide information other than surface movement. In a paper by Luo and Peng (1992), the sources and magnitude of errors in the measured surface movements using an electronic total station in subsidence survey are discussed. If the errors in the measured surface movement components are left untreated before calculation for deformation indices (i.e., slope, strain and curva¬ture), the errors will be carried over to the deformation indices and enlarged if improper numerical procedures are used in the calcu¬lation. It should be noticed that in protecting structures affected by ground subsidence, accurate surface deformation indices are much more important than surface movement. In order to improve the accuracy of the collected surface movement data and the calcu¬lated deformation indices, a number of numerical procedures are also proposed in the same paper. The proposed techniques include: a data smoothing technique for data pre-processing; and a number of numerical methods and/or procedures for calculating surface deformation indices from the measured surface movement data. DATA SMOOTHING Because of various factors, the measured surface movement data always contain errors, small or large. In order to better utilize the collected data, a data smoothing method is proposed to correct the errors in the measured movement data. The method uses the same concept as the influence function method (e.g., Knothe, 1957) on which many existing subsidence prediction methods are based. The data smoothing method makes necessary corrections on the measured movement for the point of interest according to not only the measured movement at this point but also those at the surrounding points. The contribution of a surrounding point in making the correction for the point of interest is inversely propor¬tional, in exponential form, to the distance between them. At the risk of belaboring certain facts which have so often been stated in the past, please bear with me while I set the stage. What are the projected electrical power needs of the nation and of the Northwest during the next 15 to 20 years? No one who has researched the subject over its historical past has reached a substantially different result than the following simple conclusion: electrical power requirements are doubling every decade. There are some who question the necessity of a power company's need to install capacity every ten years equal to what it has done during its entire previous history; there are even those who would argue that such growth should be arbitrarily curtailed. We are not here today to decide who should have light, heat, jobs and comfort, for we know that a power company must, by law, meet its responsibilities of providing the energy the public expects when the switch is thrown. The Northwest area (the States of Oregon and Washington), for which I speak, has the same case history of electrical power need as does the nation as a whole, and the requirement boils down to roughly an average of a million kilowatts of new capacity each year over the next ten years and we can estimate an average two million kilowatts per year in the 1980's. This is simple arithmetic, but the problems of meeting this exhausting schedule are a real challenge. The subject to which I address this paper is the role that Western Coal will play in the 6 billion dollar investment in these power generation stations. That 6 billion dollar figure represents today's dollar value and you may wish to apply your own escalation - frankly, I haven't the courage.

This is an introductory paper on a new method of prospecting for mineral deposits which has been developed by Scintrex Limited. The method, which we call Luminex, for luminescent mineral exploration, is based on time- resolved mineral luminescence created by an ultraviolet light source. It has the ability to detect and resolve a group of key minerals which are either ore minerals themselves, or more often, are accessory or pathfinder minerals for certain types of economic ore deposits. Fortunately, these minerals are commonly found at the earth's surface, even in areas of considerable weathering. The method extends the range of mineral deposits which are remotely detectable from the air to include those such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, gold and bedded lead-zinc deposits and, is therefore, a natural supplement to our three classical methods of airborne geophysics.

The effect of various constituents on the pyrolysis and combustion of a pulverized coal in an entrained-flow reactor has been inves¬tigated. Predicted time-temperature histories of the coal' particles and experimental weight loss data indicate a strong coupling of heat and mass transfer to the pyrolysis and combustion rates. A higher combustion rate following ignition was observed as particle size was increased to 112 µm. This is related to a higher particle temperature after ignition for the larger particles. Although the heating rate prior to ignition decreases with increasing particle size, higher slip velocities and surrounding gas temperatures for the larger particles promote early ignition. The presence of liptinite in the coal increases the weight loss rate before and immediately after ignition. Similar behavior was observed for pyrolysis. Fractions of a HVA bituminous coal which were rich in mineral matter or semi-fusinite were found to have a higher heterogeneous char combustion rate than vitrinite rich samples.

My subject today is "Drilling-and-Blasting of Small Rock Tunnels". I am sure that there will be some people, primarily college students but perhaps Consulting Engineers, who will say: "Drilling-and-Blasting? I thought that went out with the invention of the Tunnel Boring Machine". A few years ago I talked to Dick Robbins and he told me that they did not try to sell a "Robbin's Mole" unless the tunnel was two miles long. For easy calculations I use 10,000-ft. (3km) A Mole today costs about $2 million which works out to $200 per lineal foot. This is "front money". You cannot place the order unless you are the uncontested low-bidder and then you must wait at least six months for delivery. Of course you can use that time to square up your portals, ready to turn-the-eye, or maybe you have shafts to sink to reach the tunnel grade. But this is "dead-time" and it is a heck of a feeling to have a job and cannot get started on it until you get the Mole. I do not have the American figures on lengths of tunnels but there was an article a few years ago in a British magazine: NEW CIVIL ENGINEER, on this subject. This stated that 75% of the jobs in Britain which were bid were for small tunnels, 10-ft x 10-ft (3m x 3m) or smaller, and that they were less than 5,000-ft (1.5km) in length. This does not mean that 75% of the footage in Britain was less than 10-ft in diameter. It means that 75% of the jobs being bid were less than a mile in length. From my experience in the U.S. I believe that we have substantially the same ratio: so many of the jobs with which I was associated were short, 1,000-ft, 2,000-ft and sometimes 3,000-ft and the bores

Since time immemorial, Mother Nature has been transporting slurries with both air and water serving as the carrier medium. Consider for example the formation of the continental shelves off our coast lines which are being formed by rivers emptying erroded land surface and depositing it into bays and gulfs. As the erosion processes take place, the fines are suspended in water which flows in streams and rivers and deposits where the velocity of the flow reduces sufficiently to allow the fines to settle out. The same process in some crude form is provided when one hoses his driveway or patio and moves dirt so as to provide a cleaning action. These examples illustrate rather crudely how the formation of slurries allows for the transport of solids. In recent years, this mechanism has become fairly well understood and slurry pipelining of many materials is now a vivid reality. The movement of liquids in pipelines necessarily occasions the use of pumps for the purpose. Those of us who have had some rub with the petroleum industry are familiar with the transport of solids through mud pumps and cementing and fracturing pumps where the movement of slurries is an everyday matter. In the drilling of an oil well the circulating fluid utilized to remove chips which are cut by a drill bit from holes drilled deep in the earth is called drilling mud. This substance contrary to what the name might imply is usually a fairly sophisticated material designed to develop certain characteristics which are desirable in the drilling process. The particles which have been cut by the drill bit are suspended in the moving column of fluid and brought to the surface and deposited. The separation of the cuttings from the drilling fluids is accomplished by the use of shaker screens and settling pits. However, it is impractical to remove the fines completely from the drilling fluid and as a result they are pumped through the mud pumps back into the circulatory stream.

During last year's AIME meeting in New Orleans, Deepak Malhotra and I were discussing some of the topics that would be presented in this Symposium. It seemed appropriate that along with papers on specific reagent and flocculant types, we should address research management aspects of new product development. This development is a long, arduous task that requires a significant technical and fiscal commitment by the chemical company and potential users. A flow chart depicting the research process is shown in Figure 1. The sequence of events are plotted on an undefined time line. Our experience has shown that it takes 3-5 years to complete a typical reagent development project. A new project starts with an idea of how to do something better. The ideas range from relatively simple product modifications to opportunities created by technological change. An example of this is the use of flocculants in tailings operations to close the water recycle loop. The change was brought about by the need to conserve water and comply with environmental statutes. The result was the development and wide-spread use of synthetic polymers to help in solid-liquid separation. More recently the ups and downs of oil prices have led to development of coal water slurries as an alternative to fuel oil. The slurries contain high levels of chemicals (up to 3%) to insure proper stability and burn characteristics. There are technical changes under way right now that may lead to ideas for other new products. One exciting source of new technology is the ability to manipulate genetic material of microbes to select for specific capabilities. This has evolved by leaps and bounds over the past 5 years. Biologically assisted leaching and removal of wastewater impurities are two possible end uses. I'm sure that there are many others. The ideas can originate anywhere and are often half-baked at first, but to lead to new products they must be refined to provide project definition and eventually a research plan. A chemical ,development project cannot be started without approval to commit the company's resources. The internal selling job is often very difficult. The company must see clear financial benefits in order to launch efforts that may not pay off for many years. It is critical to project the total market, profitability, eventual market share, and timing of introduction of the new product. There is much uncertainty in this and the research manager is often skating on thin ice to retain his credibility. Once we obtain support from upper management, the research team is assembled to start the project. The teams generally consist of organic chemists, research metallurgists, and technicians. They have access to analytical scientists and technicians for surface and analytical chemistry. The projects are often augmented by help from university staff and consultants. This is particularly true where there is a need to develop fundamental understanding of the technology in addition to synthesis of chemicals. The project now proceeds along two lines. First, there is an emphasis on understanding the prior art. Extensive literature and patent searches are undertaken to provide research leads and to keep from "reinventing the wheel" and infringing on someone else's patent. The scientists and technologists are qualified to conduct computer-assisted library searches. This process usually uncovers 80-90% of the relevant information. The remainder is very much harder to get and requires the help of professional library search staff with scientific backgrounds. Along with literature searching, the team begins synthesis of new compounds. These are screened by use of techniques such as microflotation or filtration in a Buchner funnel. The scientists are looking for the direction of response as they modify structural features . Inevitably, a large number of candidates reach the next stage, a laboratory bench test. At this point it is possible to set up a research plan and use project management techniques to monitor progress. The bench tests are conducted in larger equipment, usually requiring 100-1000 grams of test substrate. Typical laboratory flotation tests are run in Denver or Wemco cells.

Steady state simulation has become a highly effective approach to the optimization of existing mineral processing plants and the design of new facilities. Accurate phenomenological models imbedded in user-friendly software packages make this advanced technology available to the mineral processing engineer. The new version 2.0 of the USIM PAC software package contains many improved features, and a new Windows 3 graphics interface. The main features include Objective-Driven Simulation, new fields of application, improved data processing algorithms and improvements in the design and optimization capabilities.

"The Bypass Tunnel has high head conditions ranging from a minimum of 600 feet (183 m) under the Hudson River to a maximum of 875 feet (267 m) on the west side. The ground cover ranges from 425 feet to 900 feet (130 to 274 m). A two-pass lining is designed for the Bypass Tunnel. The bolted, gasketed precast segments carry the temporary hydrostatic and permanent ground loads. After the tunnel is put into service, the design assumes that the final lining, which varies from reinforced concrete to reinforced concrete with steel interliner, will carry the permanent hydrostatic loads. The design head for the segments is assumed at 775 feet (236 m), and the internal operating pressure head is around 1,200 feet (366 m). This paper discusses the design hydrostatic head and different load conditions considered for the segments, the load sharing between the segments and final lining, and the means employed to control water and hydrostatic pressure. PROJECT BACKGROUND The Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT), a segment of the Delaware Aqueduct, was built from 1937 to 1944 and provides about 50% of New York City’s total water supply. Monitoring and tunnel operations have shown that the RWBT is leaking up to 35 million gallons per day (MGD) (132.5 million L/day). In particular, two locations have been identified as areas of concern: Roseton and Wawarsing, as shown in Figure 1. The Wawarsing reach of the aqueduct will be repaired with an extensive grouting program when the RWBT is unwatered. However, because of the extensive nature of the leakage in the Roseton area, a Bypass Tunnel will be constructed to divert the flow around this area."

Before discussing minicomputer software for the mineral industry, it is helpful to explain some of the computer program terminology. Most of the terms are the same as those applied to large computers. A computer system consists of a machine (hardware) with electronic and mechanical components and instructions (software) that define its operational logic and sequence. This logic is described by sets of commands grouped into programs. Each program has specific objectives related to the computer's operation and to production information from computer data that are input and processed. Software, therefore, is a general term applied to any type of computer program. Instructions to the computer are communicated through languages that convert logical and arithmetic statements into machine operations. The languages may consist of statements resembling mathematical or logical phrases understandable by humans, or they may be coded statements with no apparent resemblance to spoken language but readily understandable by the computer. Computers also translate higher level languages such as FORTRAN or COBOL into machine languages using other programs called Compilers. Programs written in these higher level languages are generally called source code. However, programs written in computer assembly language may also be called source code. The compiled version of the program after it has been translated by the compiler software is called object code. Programs used to "instruct computers how to be computers" are generally called systems software. They relate more to computer operation than to producing externally usable results. Programs producing information for many users-engineers, accountants, managers-are termed applications software. For the most part, applications software is the principal concern of the mineral industry. Programs are developed to fit user requirements as interpreted by programmers. Programs vary in quality, precision, efficiency, accuracy, and complexity, depending on programmer skills and abilities and programming decisions forcing design tradeoffs. A well written program should have speed, efficient use of available hardware resources, accuracy, and an inherently logical structure that aids documentation and subsequent modifications. Programs developed to fit specific requirements are termed customized software. A program organized and prepared for general commercial use is called a package, or a software package, and includes documentation for program use. A form of customized software that takes an existing program or package as its starting point and modifies it is called a customized package. A minicomputer program can be stored on computer cards, standard magnetic tape, magnetic cassette tape, floppy disk, or hard disk. The software purchaser or lessee may select one or more of these media when specifying a program in a software contract. Supporting documentation may include a listing of the program instructions linkages, hardware and storage resource requiremnents, flow charts, and programmer and user manuals. The purchaser must carefully make and clearly understand specifications for media and format of program delivery. This assures that delivered software is compatible with the intended hardware. Mineral Industry Attitudes Toward Computer Software The mining industry has traditionally been conservative concerning computer applications. Furthermore, large computer costs have made these systems accessible only to large companies, for the most part. But in the past few years, mining software systems developed at schools such as Pennsylvania State University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute have gained wider acceptance in the mineral industry. More mining engineers now have academic training in computer application, and computer use is now more acceptable to the mining industry. Mining managers in decisionmaking positions are faced with a new generation of computer technology resulting from the rapid evolution of minicomputers. Not too long ago, manufacturers such as Digital Equipment Corp., Data General, and Hewlett-Packard were considered newcomers. They are now established companies. In addition, Apple, Radio Shack, Commodore, and others have emerged in the growing microcomputer industry. So the mine manager or mining executive now has more options. Mining Software is Limited Along with the rapid evolution in hardware development, much general purpose software is now being developed for minicomputers. The 1981 Apple Software Directory can be obtained for about $14; Radio Shack published the Application Software Source Book in three volumes for $1.95 each. Brochures describing software can be obtained for other minicomputer manufacturers by contacting local sales representatives. Hewlett-Packard software can be obtained and exchanged through HP user's groups. Manufacturers' programming staffs are generally concerned with developing applications software. In some instances, manufacturers will recommend software developed by their hardware users. Until now, however, software development for mining applications has been minimal. This should not be surprising, since software development traditionally lags hardware development by several years. Three years ago, at a reception given during the Steel Institute meeting in New York, I heard the remark, "A new formula must be found for foreign investment." This was immediately following the takeover of U. S. Steel's Matilde operation in Bolivia. Recently, at the World Mining Congress in Lima, Peru, the subject of foreign investment was still a lively topic of conversation. The nationalization of the copper mines in Chile and recent trends in the "Third World" have made all but a few extremely wary of investment anywhere other than in the ?stable? countries. Now, the fallibility of this philosophy has been demonstrated in such "stable" countries as Canada, Australia, and Ireland. Yet, nationalization is not new to us. The events in Chile were classified as disastrous to the affected companies, but so were the effects of nationalization to the majors in Bolivia in 1952. Mexicanization of the mining industry in Mexico was considered impractical by many. Now, those who accepted it are finding it to be workable.

The design of an underground mining operation requires the integration of transportation, ventilation, ground control, and mining methods to form a system which provides the highest possible degree of safety for mine personnel; the lowest cost per ton of product; the most suitable quality of final product, considering its intended use; the maximum percent recovery of the reserve, consistent with cost and subsidence rights; and the minimum disturbance to the environment. The selection of mining method is generally the controlling factor in overall mine design. Some important considerations in the choice of mining method are : 1) Depth of cover over the coal seam. 2) Strength and thickness of rock strata in the overburden. 3) Characteristics of the coal seam, including thickness, nature and location of impurities or irregularities, dip (or pitch), nature and direction of cleavage, hardness, and structural strength of the coal. 4) Nature and strength of the immediate roof (top) over the coal seam. 5) Nature and strength of the floor (bottom) under the coal seam. 6) Presence and amount of explosive gas (methane). 7) Quantity of water likely to be encountered in the mining operation. 8) Any previous or concurrent mining in seams above or below the coal seam to be worked. 9) Any restrictions on recovery required for subsidence control. Topographical and geological reports and maps of the area are usually available from state and federal geological surveys, and contain excellent general information to guide more detailed investigations. Exploratory drilling, and the plotting and analysis of the information thus obtained, are essential steps in any development program, and aid in the correlation and evaluation of information gained by other means. Other good sources of information are operating coal mines that may be in the same seam in nearby properties. Such mines may indicate in advance much about roof control, drainage, ventilation, and other mining problems.

"The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), commonly known as Superfund, mandates evaluation of remediation alternative using nine criteria: (1) overall protection of human health and the environment, (2) compliance with ARARs (applicable or relevant and appropriate standards), (3) long-term effectiveness and permanence, (4) reduction of toxicity, mobility or volume, (5) short-term effectiveness, (6) implementability, (7) cost, (8) state acceptance, and (9) community acceptance. Many states have adopted these or similar criteria for remedy selection under state laws. Although not explicitly addressed in the CERCLA criteria, consideration of sustainability can be incorporated into these criteria. This paper explores how sustainability can be evaluated for remedy selection using the CERCLA criteria. INTRODUCTION Sustainability considerations can be incorporated into all phases of site remediation: • Site investigation (remedial investigation). • Remedy selection. • Remedial design. • Remediation construction. • Operations, maintenance, and monitoring. This paper focuses on remedy selection. Many have looked at remedy selection using sustainability criteria. However, CERCLA and corresponding State programs require remedy selection using mandatory criteria. This paper shows how sustainability can be explicitly considered using the mandatory criteria. REVIEW OF CERCLA CRITERIA First, we review the definitions of the CERCLA criteria. We then explore how sustainability criteria can be fit into the CERCLA criteria. Overall Protection of Human Health and the Environment This criterion addresses the degree to which each alternative is protective of human health and the environment, considering both long-term and short-term risks. Overall protectiveness is a ""threshold"" criterion, in that alternatives that do not achieve adequate protection of human health or the environment are eliminated from further consideration. Evaluation of this criterion is derived from the evaluation of the other criteria (e.g., long-term effectiveness and permanence, and short-term effectiveness). It is not an independent criterion, but more a summary of the overall evaluation."

Location Xiaolangdi is located in the Henan province of the People’s Republic of China. The distance between Xiaolangdi and the capital of Henan, Zhengzhou, is about200 km. Xiaolangdi is located on the Yellow River at the end of its big characteristic knee. It can be easily found on the map by locating Luoyang. The closest big city to Xiaolangdi is Luoyang (about 45 km). This city has about1 million inhabitants and is well known also to foreigners for its famous historical past. It has been the capital of China through 10 dynasties in former times. Overview The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project is located at the last gorge of the middle reach of the Yellow River. The main purposes of the project are: -flood control, - ice jam control, - sediment control, - irrigation, - water supply, - hydroelectric power generation. The project consists of many structures, these are 10 intake towers, 9 flood &sediment tunnels, 6 power tunnels, 1 underground powerhouse, and 1 zone dearth and rockfill dam with a sloping impervious core, 154m high, with a crest length of 1317m. The powerhouse mainly features 6 turbine and generator units of 300 MW, totalling installed capacity of 1800 MW and annual energy output of5.1 GWH. The total storage capacity of the reservoir is 12.65 billion m³ of which 5.1billion m³ is live storage. Of the Yellow River drainage basin, 694,000 km2 or 92,3percent is located upstream of Xiaolangdi Dam Site. Xiaolangdi is located in a key position for flood and sediment control of the Yellow River. Upon completion, Xiaolangdi Dam and Reservoir will effectively mitigate catastrophic floods, the control level will be increased from the present less than 100-year return period up to 10,000 years. Thunder Basin Coal Company's Black Thunder Mine is located 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Gillette, Wyoming in the Powder River Basin. Surface coal mining operations began in 1977. The Black Thunder Mine has been North America's largest producing coal mine for over 5 years. Production in 1988 totaled 22.6 million mt (24.9 million st) of sub-bituminous coal. Thunder Basin Coal Company is a subsidiary of Atlantic Richfield Company. The mine began as a truck-shovel stripping and mining operation. Haul trucks of 154 mt (170 st) capacity were part of the original fleet. In 1985, 218 mt (240 st) capacity trucks were introduced to the fleet. In 1988 a dragline was added for stripping. A single, primary/ secondary crushing stream feeds either a slot storage facility or dual silos. Three loading points are situated over two rail loops serviced by the Burlington Northern and Chicago North-western Railways. A Near Pit Crushing and Conveying system is currently under construction. It is expected to be completed during the fourth quarter of 1989. During the past 10 years, the conceptual crushing/conveying design has changed several times as technology and commodity markets have changed. The system under construction will have a capacity of 4700 mtph (5200 stph). The overland belt will be 3570 m (11,700 ft) long and 1800 mm (72 in.) wide. The belt speed will be 300 meters per minute (1000 fpm). Two separate crushing streams will feed the overland belt. Each stream will be comprised of a dump hopper at reclaim surface elevation, a drag feeder, a two-stage triple-roll crusher, and an incline conveyor of 2700 mtph (3000 stph) capacity. This article will describe the different concepts and factors that have resulted in the system design now under construction.
