There are many risks associated with the storage of nuclear or other toxic wastes. One of the major risks is the escape of material from the repository. No matter how well a storage facility is engineered, the potential escape of dangerous material must be studied. This kind of study will include some estimation of the "travel path" of the particles. The travel path of a radio-nuclide particle will depend on the geological and hydrological parameters of the surrounding rocks. These parameters must be estimated from a limited number of samples available within the study area. Any estimation will -of necessity -contain a certain amount of uncertainty or "estimation error". This uncertainty will be carried through to the analysis of potential movement of particles, so that the estimated travel path itself will be subject to some error. This paper discusses an approach which may lead to a quantification of the uncertainty on the predicted travel path.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) studies show that 43.5% of surveyed coal preparation plant workers had noise exposures exceeding the Mine Safety and Health Administration Permissible Exposure Level. Sound levels around vibrating screens in these plants often exceed 90 dB(A). NIOSH is currently developing noise controls for horizontal vibrating screens. To characterize noise sources, NIOSH researchers performed sound pressure level (SPL) measurements on a vibrating screen at their Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. The results show that the entire screen contributes to noise below 1 kHz and the vibration mechanism housings are most significant above 1 kHz. Constrained layer damping (CLD) treatments and an enclosure were used to reduce mechanism housing noise. These were evaluated using sound power level measurements according to ISO 3744. The CLD treatments reduced the A-weighted sound power level by 3.1 dB in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands. A panel-on-frame vibration mechanism enclosure using various types of panels further reduced the A-weighted sound power level from the CLD configuration in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands by 3.7, 4.0, and 3.9 dB for aluminum, steel, and Dynalam panels, respectively. The combination yielded a 7 dB reduction from baseline in A-weighted sound power for the same frequency range.

The reaction kinetics of sulfuric acid leaching of brass foundry flue dusts were studied. As received flue dusts were separated into two size fractions, a coarse fraction (median size 103.5 microns) and a fine fraction (median size 3.4 microns). Experiments were performed on both fractions al-though most results are reported for the coarse fraction. Leaching experiments were conducted in a stirred reactor to determine those factors which govern the kinetic response of the sys-tem. The kinetics were followed by determining the increase in the concentration of dissolved copper with time. The effects of temperature, concentration and oxygen partial pressure on the rate of copper dissolution were examined. In addition, reaction residues were examined by SEM, EDAX and X-ray analysis. An activation energy of 4.8 kcal/mole (20.08 kJ/mole) was calculated. The rate was found to be significantly dependent on oxygen partial pressure and acid concentration. The order of the reaction with respect to oxygen partial pressure and hydrogen ion concentration was approximately 1.50 and 0.37, respectively. The Tacubaya subway tunnels form a link in the Sistema de Transporte Colectivo (Mass Transit System) of the Federal District of Mexico. One tunnel 327 m long lies to the north of Tacubaya Station, the other 811 m long, to the south. The tunnels are designed to accommodate two subway trains, one inbound and one outbound, within the inside diameter of 8.5 m. The designers of the tunnel lining and tunnel driving equipment were faced with the problem of driving two subway tunnels 9.0 m outside diameter through water-bearing soil, directly beneath a high speed limited access highway, a main drainage sewer, structures including residences and office buildings, on an alignment curved for 67 per cent of tunnel length, and on grades as high as 7 per cent, within a limited budget, with minimum damage to property and disruption to the community. Planning The following decisions affecting tunnel design and construction were made at an early stage of planning: Shield. To enhance safety, a tunnel shield would be used for tunnel driving. Dewatering. The water-bearing soil could be effectively dewatered; consequently, tunnel driving could be performed in free air. Hand Mining. To minimize investment in equipment, hand mining would be used to excavate and support the face.

A fairly complex analysis is required to select, or evaluate a piece of excavating and bulk handling equipment and obtain its performance. At present there is little agreement as to what specific points should be considered, and even less on what procedure to follow. This paper provides both of these in a consistent and direct form. The analysis applies to all types and sizes of equipment from the bulldozer and the continuous miner, to the B.W.E. The importance of the equipment characteristics, job activities, and work conditions are stressed and separate analytical stems are established in a flow chart for these. They are combined using suitability tests in the following steps: 1) problem statement, 2) natural conditions, 3) suitability guidelines, 4) appropriate equipment types, 5) operational activities, 6) encumbered space, 7) geometric design, 8) equipment sizing, 9) failure and limits, 10) performance and consumption, 11) public policy checks, and 12) costs and profitability. Public policy and economics while considered throughout receive emphasis towards the end. The procedure is iterative, containing distinct feedback loops. Specifying the steps and sequence provides a necessary structure which has long been overdue.

"INTRODUCTION In carbonate rocks, it is difficult to characterize due to the high degree of heterogeneity in pore geometry. Carbonate rocks have various types of pore systems such as fractures and vugs, and this heterogeneity should be considered for more realistic prediction of oil production in carbonate reservoirs. This study carried out water flooding experiments using five carbonate rock samples in order to observe the change of physical properties. Firstly, qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted for each carbonate samples by use of XRD and XRF to evaluate the mineral content. All samples are mainly composed of CaCO3 and after that, the ICP experiments were carried out for the water passing through the carbonate. As a result, it was possible to measure the quantity of CaCO3, MgO, Fe2O3 component in water and due to this effect, the permeability of carbonate was altered especially in the front part of the core. Finally, after the carbonate was saturated by 30 API crude oil, water injection to enhance the oil recovery was repeated and it was confirmed that the oil-producing characteristics are different depending on the dissolution characteristics of carbonate rock samples. CORE SAMPLE ANALYSIS Porosity and Permeability Experiment Porosity and permeability were measured. The procedures are as follows (Figure 1). 1. Measure the diameter and length of the dry core using Vernier caliper. 2. Put the core in the core holder, run vacuum pump until the inlet and outlet pressure gauge equal. 3. Saturate the core using ISCO pump to inject water at 650 psi 4. Measure the amount of water and calculate the porosity 5. Set up the outlet pressure at 500 psi. 6. The flow rate measure when the equilibrium 7. Calculate the permeability through Darcy’s Law. 8. Cutting of core upstream and downstream about 13cm, and measure the each of permeability."

The US coal industry has been using continuous room-and-pillar mining (CRPM) machines for more than 30 years for longwall development. This equipment has also been used for production mining in areas that are not appropriate for longwall mining. From 1977 to 1987, the portion of annual US production mined by continuous miner (CM) sections grew slightly from 65% to 70%. Over this time, mine operators and manufacturers have made some advances to attain the full production potential of this method. This is evidenced by the fact that average tons per eight hour shift for continuous miners in the US grew from 180 t (200 st) in 1977 to 431 t (475 st) in 1987. The authors (1990) reported that the increase in productivity was due to several factors: • a drop in prices; • a more mature workforce; • union stability and incentive programs; •procedural improvements; and •technological advances. The authors estimated that about one-third of the increased production came from the first three and other unaccounted for factors and one-third each for the last two. Even though improvements were considerable, continuous miner capacity is much higher than 431 t/shift (475 st per shift). For example, the machinery is capable of mining more than 9 t (10 st) per machine for the 6.5 available hours per shift or 3.5 kt (3900 st). However, this has never been attained on development. Over the past few years, the use of fully grouted bolts to support the roof of underground openings has increased dramatically. While conventionally anchored bolts effectively reinforce the strata of over 80 percent of mine workings, the use of resin grouted bolts in areas of severe roof conditions has resulted in a substantial reduction in roof falls and an overall improvement in both safety and production. The Roof Control Group of Pittsburgh Technical Support Center, Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration, has conducted numerous field and laboratory investigations to isolate parameters which contribute to the effectiveness of both conventional and resin bolting systems. Specially developed strain-gamed resin bolts, compression pads and differential sag stations installed during the mining cycle have generated data reflecting the loading characteristics and resulting roof stability associated with each type of support. Additional investigations have produced optimum installation parameters of the two systems including the effectiveness of thrust/torque controls for conventional bolts and various bolt/ hole diameter combinations for fully grouted rods. Theoretical analyses, coupled with the actual field and laboratory findings and numerous installation observations have facilitated basic comparisons of the working mechanisms and failure modes of both resin and conventional systems.

High speed stirred milling is a relatively new method of grinding in the metalliferous process industries. However it has been it has been in wide spread use in the industrial mineral field for over 30 years for various minerals. Many existing metallurgical operations are looking to maximize economic return from existing deposits, requiring new thinking and technologies. The operating experience of two existing copper operations will be covered to show the effect of the introduction of the Metso Stirred Media Detritor (SMD) a new type of high speed stirred mill. Both operations have derived significant metallurgical benefits from the introduction of this new technology. The benefits and process difficulties are covered and explained.

"Name your poison," wrote Forbes, Jan. 3, 1983, in an article describing the plight of much of the mineral industry as it entered the new year. "To ask which (mining) segment is better these days is almost like asking which of several stones would make a better life preserver." "The scene has seldom seemed darker or apparently less promising," said the Mining Journal in June 1982. And the Northern Miner described the year as the third in a "3-year drought which has completely dried up (company) coffers." Thus, 1982 became the worst year for much of the mining industry since the Great Depression. Low prices, commodity surpluses, output reductions, layoffs, temporary and permanent closures, and financial losses made headlines as the general recession continued to hurl blows at an industry facing strong foreign competition, increased government regulations, and plummeting market demand. At fault were tight US monetary policies and the resulting high interest rates that, while forcing inflation to slow, also threw the economic wheels of the country into reverse gear. Automobile production, housing starts, consumer durable sales, and capital spending all fell dramatically. US industrial production fell about 8.5% in 1982, with the GNP dropping by 1.7%. Production Value Not a single mineral escaped this recession. According to the US Bureau of Mines, US nonfuel production value dropped for all but four out of 21 metals and 14 out of 44 nonmetals. Production quantities increased for only gold, lead, and zirconium among metals and for only six nonmetals. Total nonfuel mineral production value dropped a whopping 21% from 1981 levels, the largest decline since 1938 and the first since 1971. Production value was estimated at $20 billion. Metal commodities showed heavier losses than nonmetals-37% vs. 12%-because of their link to depressed automobile and construction industries. Prices From peaks in early 1980, prices of precious and base metals, ferrous and nonferrous metals, and virtually every mineral dropped to 30-month lows in June 1982. Gold dropped to $9.64/g ($300/oz) compared to a high of $27/g ($850/ oz). Silver was quoted below 164/g ($5/oz) versus a $1.61/g ($50/oz) high. Copper was offered at a five-year low of $1.22/kg (55.5¢/lb) compared with a high of $3.30/kg ($1.50/lb). Lead went for 53¢/kg (24¢/lb) versus $1.21 (554). Nickel begged for buyers at $4.19/kg ($1.90/lb) compared to a high price of $7.72/kg ($3.50/lb). Molybdenum was available at or below $8.82/kg ($4/lb), down from a high of $44/kg ($20/lb). Cobalt went for $11/kg ($5/lb) versus $55/kg ($25/lb). Adjusted for inflation, increased currency costs, and currency devaluation, many of these prices are the lowest reached in decades. Financial Profits & Losses Low prices severely impacted companies' earnings, turning profits into sometimes disastrous or fatal losses. Robert Norton, director of the US Bureau of Mines, noting there has been a recession in the mineral industry for years, said, "Profit rates as related to invested capital have been considerably lower (for mining) than those of other industries. Nevada is primarily known today for its nation-leading production of gold and silver. However, industrial mineral production continues to play an important role in providing construction materials to help make the state the fastest growing in the United States. Aggregate production in Nevada was about 20 million tons in 1991. Most of that was used in construction in the fast-growing Las Vegas area. The state leads the nation in the production of barite and mined magnesite and has significant production of lithium carbonate, diatomite and gypsum. Other industrial minerals produced in the state include specialty clays, silica, lime and dolomite and relatively small production in salt, perlite and dimension stone. Industrial minerals operations are subject to state and federal permitting requirements, especially in the areas of air and water quality and mined land reclamation. As in all segments of the mineral producing industries throughout the nation, the amount and complexity of regulations affecting industrial minerals has increased significantly in recent years. Nevada is no exception.

"The effectiveness of reagent adsorption onto hematite ore particle surfaces is critical during beneficiation to promote effective selective flocculation and dispersion and increase iron oxide recovery. The relationship between aqueous calcium in the process water and the effectiveness of common iron ore dispersants has never before been studied. The nature of common dispersants was studied in the presence and absence of calcium in the process water. The settling behavior of hematite-rich iron ore at pH 11 was assessed in the presence of calcium and inorganic dispersants: sodium silicate, sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) and organic dispersant ethylenediamenetetraacetic acid (EDTA). It was found that inorganic dispersants are ineffective at a pH of 11 without activating the surface sites of the ore particles with calcium. Organic dispersants, however, were found to be effective with and without surface site activation.IntroductionThe United States produced 54 million metric tons of concentrated iron ore in 2011 (Jorgenson, 2013). Over 8 Mt were produced using a process known as selective flocculation and dispersion (CCI, 2011). The grade of this ore is slowly depleting, making it imperative that processing efficiency improves. To increase processing efficiency, a complete understanding of the effects of chemical reagents in the process must be acquired. This process relies heavily on dispersants to disperse iron oxides from gangue minerals in settling processes. The mechanism that these dispersants use to disperse the ore and its relationship to calcium in the process water has never been studied. The following extended abstract summarizes the relationship between aqueous calcium in process water and the effectiveness of common iron ore dispersants at dispersing hydrated hematite ore. These tests were carried out at a pH of 11, as this is a typical pH used to ensure dispersion in selective flocculation and dispersion processes."

This paper will discuss bentonite deposits in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The discussion will be re¬stricted to a review of the so-called calcium or non-swelling bentonites. In other words the exchangeable cation is calcium. The term "bentonite" is used to describe a clay material, composed essentially of the clay mineral montmorillonite. In addition, bentonites may contain various impurities such as glass shards, feldspar, quartz, muscovite and biotite mica, glauconite, pyrite, hydrated iron oxide, gypsum, organic material, etc, Most of the southern calcium bentonites contain at least 70% montmorillonite, Bentonite as mined may range in color from dark grayish greens through various shades of grays, reds, yellows and browns to nearly white. It is normally massive and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. When air dried, closely spaced shrinkage fractures occur. Moist bentonite has a soapy feel, with little or no obvious "grit". Bentonite deposits were first discovered in Mississippi about 1925, in southern Monroe County. During the thirties and early 1940's, deposits were identified in Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Perhaps the earliest production of southern bentonite was from a deposit in the valley of the Tombigdee River, south of Jackson, Alabama in 1936. Production commenced in Mississippi during the latter part of 1938 at Pontotoc. The growth and development of the bentonite industry in the southern United States owes its beginning to three events. In order to store high-level radioactive waste underground, the German repository concept considers clay, crystalline and salt formations as suitable host rock materials (National Citizens’ Oversight Committee, 2024). The current research projects of the Chair Underground Mining Methods at TUBAF (Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg) in nuclear waste repositories mainly focus on storage within salt formations. In this scenario, the high-level radioactive waste is supposed to be packed into specifically designed containers and then transported underground and emplaced in horizontal storage drifts. The residual temperature of the radioactive waste leads to the question if there are optimization possibilities for waste handling, the storage and the long-term emplacement of such high temperature level waste. A deeper understanding of the heat transmission from the container into the host rock might lead both towards possibly shorter surface interim storage times as well as size optimization possibilities of the repository itself. TUBAF has conducted research that successfully proved that an optimized container positioning yields more favorable thermal patterns and can be achieved with conventional mining equipment.

Judging by the inquiries that come to Battelle, a number of companies have run into problems in determining the size and character of markets for mineral fillers in general and specialty fillers in particular. Usually these problems arise during a project to develop a new mineral filler when management suddenly realizes that a considerable sum of money will have to be spent before any profits are realized from sales of the new filler. What management needs in this case is the odds for or against the success of the development. And these odds frequently are controlled by the markets for the new filler. Basically, the problems involved in gaging markets can be simplified to how much of this new filler can be used and by whom? But there are some potential booby traps in these simple questions that should be exposed. This paper will discuss a few of these problems such as: 1. Describing the filler so that the prospective customer recognizes its possible applicability. 2. Finding; a prospective customer who can verify the filler's applicability. 3. Expanding successful test results to total industry markets. 4. Appraising competitive products, and 6. Discovering all the possible uses for the new filler.

The graphite industry as a whole has gone through many changes over the years. Most of the graphite used in major applications since the turn of the century were basic natural or electrode by-product synthetic materials, processed using simple crushing, screening, or grinding techniques. In the mid 1970's new thermal technology was developed which changed the face of the .graphite industry, and opened up a panacea of new products and capabilities. Materials produced through this new technology have helped revolutionize new products and processes in industries including automotive, batteries, fuel cells, electronics, iron, lubricants and steel. This paper outlines the continued improvements in those industries as well as the as well as the outlook for new technology in this rapidly changing area.

The cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis are located side by side on a double loop in the Mississippi River near the eastern boundary of Minnesota. Both cities lie on both sides 'of the Mississippi River, which in this region describes an S-shaped curve. The two cities together have a population of over 600,000 people, gathered in an area which has grown to be a single urban district inasmuch as the two cities have expanded until they occupy all the territory formerly between them, though the business centers are ten miles apart. St. Paul is located at the head of navigation on the Mississippi River and Minneapolis, farther upstream, at the Falls of St. Anthony. A recent water¬power development below the Falls of St. Anthony, constructed by the Federal Government, has at the same time made possible navigation to the foot of St. Anthony Falls through a lock around the dam which replaces the former rapids. Minneapolis, in 1920, had a population of 380,000 people, and St. Paul, 235,000. The two cities occupy land at an elevation of 700 to 900 feet above sea level. The average elevation is slightly less at St. Paul. Minneapolis has nearly 4,000 acres of parks and park¬ways, while St. Paul has nearly 2,000.
