The American Concrete Institute defines "shotcrete" as "mortar or concrete conveyed through a hose and pneumatically projected at high velocity unto a surface." This definition thus includes what is traditionally known as "gunite," which is a pneumatically applied mortar. In mining practice, the term shotcrete is restricted to pneumatically applied concrete, and this differentiation will be used in this paper. In 1914, following the invention of the mortar gun in 1907, the then Chief Engineer of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, George Rice, developed the guntie process for underground test work at the bureau facility at Bruceton, Pennsylvania. After World War I, gunite was used extensively in American mines and was also utilized for underground civil works such as the San Jacinto Tunnel in California. The greatest development was In Europe where, as early as 1911, gunite was successfully used as an overlay for deteriorated tunnel linings. In 1951, the Swiss firm Aliva developed a pneumatic gun capable of handling coarse aggregate, thus making possible the first use of shotcrete at the Maggia hydropower development. Intially, shotcrete was used to reduce manpower requirements for forming; and placing conventional concrete. However, by 1954 Sonderegger was reporting that the structural advantages of shotcrete were derived from its flexibility and from the fact that it could be applied almost immediately niter the opening had been made. The incorporation of wire mesh into the shotcrete led to the New Austrian Tunnel Method, or NATM. The use of shotcrete in American mines has been implemented more recently. This delay seems to be due to previously unsuccessful experiences with gunite as a structural material and to the U.S. reliance on wood or steel supports in main line haulageways. The long experience with the apparently more substantial rigid supports led mine operators to be reluctant to the new and seemingly unrealistic lighter shotcrete support.

The purpose of this study was to seek and evaluate possible relationships between the composition of coal refuse, as expressed by washability data, and factors affecting the product ion of a lightweight aggregate from refuse by bloating. The study was related to an intense program in the Department of Mineral Preparation at the Pennsylvania State University to study the possible elimination of air pollution from coal refuse fires by producing a low- carbon secondary refuse. Another phase of this program is considering possible uses of such a secondary refuse. Thus one study was to determine if a lightweight aggregate could be produced from this new refuse material and what effect the nature of refuse beneficiation would have upon the characteristics of a commercial aggregate product.

Recent developments undertaken to improve mine productivity are also dealt with together with some notes on proposed measures to obtain further gains in productivity.

A microbiological flotation system that facilitates the removal of pyritic sulfurfrom coal is reported. The chemoautotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is utilized as a pyrite-selective biological surfactant that augments the flotation-mediated rejection of pyritic sulfur. The bacteria were produced by continuous cultivation in 50-L tanks, where it was possible to produce 3.8 x 1012 cells/day when the dilution rate was optimal and the pH was 1.6, a condition that prevented ferric precipitation. Prior to flotation, the bacteria were mixed with coal, which allowed cells to selectively adhere to the pyrite. The adherence of bacteria made the pyrite surfaces more hydrophilic, which facilitated separation by increasing the tendency of pyrite to sink, while the hydrophobic coal floated. When a synthetic coal/pyrite mixture (10.1 % sulfur) was subjected to microbial flotation, the level of sulfur rejection was stable during the entire period of operation (i.e., one hour). In the absence of bacteria, flotation reduced the sulfur content of a coal/pyrite mixture to within the range of 6.7% to 7.4%, with the combustible recoveries ranging from 93.9% to 99.0%. In the presence of bacteria, the sulfur content of cleaned coal was in the range of 1.3% to 1.4%, with the combustible recoveries ranging from 80.8% to 86.3%. Bacterial activity accounted for 57% of the total sulfur rejected through flotation. The desulfurization capacity of the system was further confirmed by testing it with run-of-mine coal. The pyritic sulfur content was reduced from 2.9% in the feed coal to around 1.2% in the froth product, while 80% of the combustible recovery was retained. Microbial flotation removed 60% of the pyritic sulfur from the feed. These findings demonstrated that micro¬bial flotation could be utilized for the removal of pyritic sulfur from coal in a semicontinuous system.

"When Dr. Joseph A. Holmes was named the first director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1910, the challenge in front of the mining industry was urgent and profound. Just three years before the Bureau was formed, the United States’ coal industry saw a spike in fatalities, as 3,242 miners lost their lives, including 918 miners killed in 18 major disasters. Holmes, who is often called the Founding Father of Mine Safety, was charged with researching and finding new and safer methods to conduct mining activities as well as more efficient ways to conduct mine rescue to educate miners.The U.S. Bureau of Mines was dissolved in 1996, but the mission of the Holmes Mine Rescue Association remains intact, although the challenges have changed greatly.During the 102 years between its formation and the 2018 Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association & Holmes Mine Rescue Association Annual Meeting and Training Seminar in Denver, CO June 5-7, the mining industry has evolved to become one the safest industries in the United States, with an injury rate on par with school teachers and better than retail workers. The work of Holmes and the Bureau of Mines plotted a course for others to follow, and the fatality rate has plummeted to historic lows. However, those who work in the mining safety and health sector remain diligent to their cause and are slow to celebrate too much the accomplishments of the past century, focusing instead on the work that lies ahead.“The nature of mining accidents has changed and it is very difficult to make changes when you get down to the asymptotic part of the equation,” David Zatezalo, assistant secretary of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) told Mining Engineering. He was the featured speaker at the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association annual meeting’s banquet dinner and presented a thorough overview of the mission of MSHA and his goals as its top man.Nominated by President Donald Trump, Zatezalo was sworn in as the ninth assistant secretary for MSHA on Nov. 30, 2017 and brings with him a lifetime of experience in mining. During his presentation, he displayed the chart (Fig. 1) showing the dramatic improvement in safety that the industry has achieved during the past century, but he noted that, as the industry gets closer to its end goal of zero fatalities, it has become increasingly more difficult to cross the finish line."

The San Miguel Mine is owned by San Miguel Electrical Cooperative, Inc. and operated by Atascosa Mining Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc. This multiseam, single-zone lignite surface mine is located near Jourdanton, Texas, 110 kilometers (68 miles) south of San Antonio. Lignite extracted from four closely-spaced seams is used to fuel the 400-MW San Miguel Power Plant. Recovery depths range from 7 to 37 meters (25 to 120 feet). The mine began stripping operations in the spring of 1980 and now produces approximately 2.5 million tonnes (2.8 million tons) of lignite annually. Atascosa Mining Company is responsible for production, maintenance, engineering, and management services. Production responsibilities include topsoil removal, overburden removal, lignite mining, spoil pile regrading and topsoil replacement, as well as ash disposal and construction and maintenance of water retention and diversion facilities.

Technological advances in mine equipment and milling processes have enabled mining companies to exploit ever lower grades of ore. The result has been larger disturbances, greater volumes of waste, a complex web of infrastructure, and an overall trend towards mega-projects that can extend over several square kilometers. This explosive growth in a mining operation’s disturbance footprint provokes an obvious question: What’s it going to cost to reclaim all of this? At face value, this can be an enormous financial liability for a company, but since the timing of reclamation may be years in the future for many operations, these costs can be heavily discounted thereby limiting the burden on the corporate balance sheet. Nonetheless, mining companies are eager to remove these liabilities as quickly as possible, conversely, regulators want assurance reclamation will, in fact, occur. How might one bridge these competing interests? Navigating the practical and financial requirements of a post-closure landscape requires foresight, judgement and assumptions, however, companies who do not adequately plan for these future expenditures when there is no off-setting income stream will likely face some difficult decisions. Simple risk analysis tools and utilizing the time value of money can help bring some clarity to this end-of-mine life phase.

The Robinson Mining District near Ely, Nevada, is one of the major porphyry copper districts in the world. Within the district is an east-trending zone of altered porphyry, metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, and sulphide mineralization surrounded by Paleozoic limestone, dolomite, shale and sandstone, Tertiary volcanics, and Quaternary alluvium. Six major disseminated ore deposits have been exploited in this eight-mile zone. About 20% of the district production has come from disseminated ore in metamorphosed sedimentary rocks found adjacent to altered quartz-monzonite porphyry. The following brief statements summarize the inter-relationship of porphyry, alteration, metamorphism, and mineralization: 1. Disseminated copper ore does not occur in unaltered porphyry or in unmetamorphosed sedimentary rocks 2. Sedimentary rocks have been only weakly metamorphosed where intruded, by unaltered porphyry. 3. Intensely metamorphosed sedimentary rocks are found only adjacent to, altered porphyry. 4. Many hydrothermal minerals are common to both altered porphyry and adjacent metamorphosed sediments. 5. Disseminated ore is found in altered porphyry and adjacent meta¬morphosed sedimentary rocks. 6. In general, there is a direct correlation between grade of ore in porphyry and copper content in the adjacent rocks. 7. The control of soils has been found to be one of the highest priority factors influencing the return of reclaimed prime farmland to production. The compaction of soil is primarily a result of the movement of high ground pressure wheel scrapers and dozers over soils during the soils replacement and regarding process and occurs to a maximum depth of about 1.2 m (4 ft) The deleterious effects of soil compaction can be controlled by deep soil loosening to a depth of 1.2 m (4 ft). Most farm tillage equipment can only loosen soils to a maximum depth of 0.33 m (1.0 ft). Deeper soil loosening equipment, in the 0.33-1.2 m (1.0-4.0 ft) range is currently avail- able in the U.S. and abroad which may have potential for application on reclaimed prime farmland. This study has appraised such available equipment and the results indicate that a few manufacturers in the U.S., West Germany, and England market static and vibratory soil loosening equipment which have potential for deeper soil loosening of reclaimed prime farmland.

The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica's future agricultural productivity. "Gold-mine effluents are often characterized by high concentrations of copper, ammonia and cyanide derivatives (mostly cyanates and thiocyanates). While not acutely toxic to birds, this water can be acutely toxic to fishes and invertebrates. In many jurisdictions, the effluent requires further treatment in order to pass a mandatory requirement to be nonlethal to species like the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) or Daphnia magna. Using actual mine water, it has been demonstrated that aerated moving bed biofilm reactors will biodegrade the ammonia, cyanides, cyanates and thiocyanates, thereby removing the toxicity associated with these components. By removing copper by precipitation the water can be made to pass acute toxicity tests. Tests have demonstrated that the process is stable between 4 and 25°C, with no significant changes in the treated water composition. Once the biomass is acclimatized, the process is resistant to upsets and requires very little inputs except for phosphorus and air. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that an anoxic reactor can be added downstream of the aerated reactors to remove nitrates if required.IntroductionThis paper will demonstrate that gold-mine effluents, which are toxic to fishes and invertebrates, can be made nontoxic by using a combination of chemical precipitation and biological oxidation.The typical composition of gold-mine effluents will first be described. The applicable legislation will then be introduced, with its requirement that the treated effluent be nontoxic. The toxicity of a typical untreated effluent will then be confirmed, and the sources of the toxicity identified. After that, a number of toxicity reduction treatment methods will be presented, and the selected method will be described.The lab tests that confirmed the efficiency of the treatment method will be presented, with three phases of testing as the understanding of the process gradually improved. Toxicity test results showing that the water is nontoxic after treatment through the temperature range will be presented."

High performance sprayed concrete equipment installed on two 9.4 m diameter hard rock TBMs enabled a continuous sprayed concrete lining for the entire contour in both tunnels to be performed concurrently with the advancing TBMs. Innovative layout of the sprayed concrete arrangements comprised ring beam constructions each with two independent spraying robots. Each of the spraying robots were independently connected to sprayed concrete pumps, as well as a high capacity concrete logistics system on the backup. The mix designs focused on long open-time, excellent pumpability and tough requirements on strength development. The achieved output capacities of the sprayed concrete amounts to an average of 15 m3 per hour. Peak capacities of 24 m3 per hour have been realized.

Languages such as SIMSCRIPT and GASP have reduced the programming skills required to build simulation models, but not to a level where these can be used by a busy engineer or manager unless he has extensive programming experience. In an attempt to make simulation a more readily available tool, Sanford (1969) structured a generalized materials handling model (UGMHS)* for underground coal mining. The majority of materials handling systems consist of a set of moves and a set of pieces of equipment required to execute the moves. UGMHS gives a technique for describing and classifying the elements in these sets and then a technique for simulating the interactions of these elements as the materials handling system operates. To apply the model, the user simply furnishes data parameters and a fixed set of orders to the computer for his own problem. This new philosophy of dynamic simulation as applied by UGMHS was demonstrated in the paper by Sanford and Manula (1973). A dynamic model of underground coal mining was presented for the purposes of systems design and selection of equipment for a completely new operation and the analysis of existing ones for possible alterations, additions, and general improvements. The main differences between this application and its predecessors is the ability to transport material from multiple mine faces to multiple mine destinations and the ready adaptability to a wide variety of mine layouts. The second difference that characterizes the model is the deterministic simulation of equipment moves according to their mechanical capabilities and the physical profile of the mining scheme. Here, the computer generates performance data in the absence of time studies to compare equipment rather than operator performance.

The thermal conductivity of rock surrounding the airway is one of the most important thermal properties for estimating strata heat transfer into the mine air and for designing the air-cooling strategies. Several laboratory methods are available for the determination of thermal conductivity; however, most of them are complex and cumbersome. The present study explains the working principle of Lee’s apparatus which is relatively simple, easy to fabricate and use, and provides consistent results. In the present study, thermal conductivities of sandstone cores obtained from an Indian coal mine are determined using Lee’s apparatus. An approach is discussed for determining the temperature gradient of sandstone specimens while cooling and used for calculating thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of different sandstone specimens attains values between 2.37 and 2.59 W m− 1 °C−1. For different sandstone cores obtained from the field, properties including specific gravity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and porosity, along with thermal conductivity, are determined and highlighted in this study.

A variety of approaches have been used in the recent literature for the estimation of pre-mining (or natural background) metal concentrations in areas affected by mining. The following is a list of some of these approaches: (1) historical and anecdotal data, (2) remote analogues (other similarly mineralized areas), (3) proximal analogues (nearby mineralized areas), (4) sediment sampling (streambeds, lakes, estuaries, floodplain deposits, and soil profiles), (5) stable isotopes (hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and carbon), (6) geochemical modeling (forward, equilibrium-based), (7) geochemical modeling (forward, kinetic- and transport-based, and inverse), (8) statistical analyses, (9) mass balance on oxygen flux, (10) mass balance with age determination of weathered material. Examples of each approach are described, and the strengths and limitations of each approach are discussed.

Soft ground tunneling poses major challenges to the underground industry. Most of soft ground tunnels are in highly urbanized areas, often include limited cover, and include a strong trend of increasing diameters. Therefore, soft ground tunneling works can sometimes cause inevitable ground movements and settlements that may lead to damages to adjacent buildings, roads, structures or utilities; many of these being “lifeline” infrastructure assets. Tunneling operations, Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) advance rates, and face pressure control can significantly increase or decrease such risks, depending on how well the TBM and operational parameters are applied to the ground conditions. Additionally, the risks of impacting existing infrastructure are heightened in many parts of North America because of cobbles and boulders. To date there is no standardized guideline that determines appropriate tunneling rates nor operator’s guidelines, to ensure safe tunnelling in soft ground. The paper analyzes tunneling records from completed soft ground tunnels to determine a relation between ground conditions, tunnel cover, TBM cutters maintenance and TBM advance rates. The records are discussed to draw several mitigation measures to be adopted during tunnelling, to reduce risks of settlements, over excavation or sinkholes.

One of the primary areas of computer application in mine ventilation has been the analysis of mine ventilation networks. A variety of network analyzers that are aimed toward the solution of flows in a given network has been developed. These programs typically use the Hardy Cross or other iterative algorithm for solution of any network, even those that are complex. The computer software has become more efficient and sophisticated over time and has thus been widely adopted for ventilation network analysis. One of the shortcomings of these programs is that they have been developed with the idea of analyzing the ventilation requirements at a single point in the lifetime of a mine. This provides the ventilation engineer with an important tool for analysis but falls somewhat short of providing a convenient means to economically com- pare alternative methods for ventilating a mine. The program described in this paper provides such a tool. The principal concepts that were necessary for the completion of a computer program that analyzes ventilation alternatives is the capability of efficiently determining the ventilation requirements at a variety of times during the lifetime of the ventilation system and some method of analyzing the costs of the alternatives on a realistic comparative basis. To accomplish this task, the authors began using Penn State's mine ventilation simulator designated as PSU/MVS, Didyk et al. (1977a, 1977b) and added the necessary additional software to accommodate the need for multi-period, time-dependent analysis of the net- work. The software was then tested on a coal mine ventilation problem with a 23-year life. The problem points out the value of such a program for ventilation analysis.

The bucket elevator is probably the oldest known form of conveyor. Its history can be traced back to the days of Babylon where wicker baskets lined with a natural pitch and fastened to ropes operating over wooden sheaves turned by slaves, were used for the elevating of water into irrigation ditches. It is not unnatural for the bucket elevator to be the first in history, for even today engineers and designers recognize that well designed, correctly applied bucket elevators offer unequaled advantages over other bulk material elevating methods. The bucket elevator's vertical design saves valuable floor space. It provides flexibility of machinery layout with lowest initial capital expenditure, which is its principal advantage. While the advantages of the bucket elevator have long been recognized, there has been a tendency to lean away from its use because of high maintenance without reliability. CHAIN Belt Company found that the bucket elevator, if correctly applied, can be built to be as dependable and reliable as any other piece of machinery in today's modern processing plants. It is not difficult to understand why the bucket elevator is looked upon sometimes as a necessary evil in the material handling system. Very little has been published or written about the specific use or application of bucket elevators other than in manufacturers catalogs. Most of today's elevator application was set forth at the turn of the century by Hetzel (1). There have been many improvements made in the manufacturing techniques of elevator components, improvements in material selections, all which can be used to improve today's bucket elevator. To best understand the improvements which have taken place recently in the design and application of bucket elevators, an understanding of basic elevator principles is desirable. In general, it can be said that bucket elevators are classified into two basic types : (1) centrifugal discharge and (2) continuous. Elevators in use today are either of the centrifugal discharge type or the continuous type, or a combination of both in special applications.

Kaolin is an important industrial mineral because of its unique properties and low cost. Strictly defined, kaolin is the name given to a group of hydrous aluminum silicates of which kaolinite is the most common mineral (1). Through common usage the mineral, kaolinite, is called "kaolin" or "china clay". In 1972 over 4, 000, 000 tons of kaolin will be beneficiated and shipped by domestic producers. By far the largest user of kaolin is the paper industry which utilizes approximately 65 to 70 per cent of the total production. Kaolin is used in paper as a filler in the interstices of the sheet and as a coating to impart smoothness, gloss, brightness, and printability to the paper. The rubber industry is also a large user of kaolin where it is used as a filler because it adds strength, abrasion resistance, and rigidity to both natural and synthetic rubber goods. Kaolin is used as an extender in paints because it is chemically inert, has a high covering power, gives desirable flow properties, and is low in cost. In ceramics, kaolin is used in whitewares, tile, insulators, refractories, and in some face brick where a white color is desired. Kaolin is also used extensively in plastics as a filler in thermosetting and thermoplastic mixes to give smoother surfaces, a more attractive finish, good dimensional stability, and resistance to chemical attack. Many other process industries use kaolin as a filler, suspending medium, or for color improvement.
