The Dents Run Demonstration Project near Morgantown, West Virginia, was a cooperative venture involving the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Water Resources Division (WRD)(1) of the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and the Christopher Division of the Consolidation Coal Company (CONSOL). The object of this project was to demonstrate pollution control methods and to clean up a 37.8 sq km (14.6 sq mi) watershed severely polluted by coal mine drainage. A study entitled, "Water Infiltration Control to Achieve Mine Water Pollution Control" (EPA-R-2-73-142),(2) was conducted by the Cyrus Wm. Rico Division of NUS Corporation for the grantee to determine the feasibility of utilizing remedial techniques to improve the Dents Run water¬shed. This study showed that the Dents Run watershed was discharging as much as 6,870 kg/day (15,100 lb/day) of acid; 1620 kg/day (3,560 lb/day) of iron 17,250 kg/day (38,000 lb/day) of sulfates; and 29,500 kg/day (64,900 lb/day) of total dissolved solids into the Monongahela River near Morgantown, West Virginia. This pollution was caused by the combination of borehole pump discharges from active underground mines, runoff from abandoned strip mines, and runoff from refuse dumps.

In this study, the effects of various extraction and stripping parameters, such as equilibrium pH (7.0, 8.5 and 10), extractant concentration (5, 10 and 20 volume %), organic-to-aqueous (O/A) ratio and stripping agent type and concentration were studied on chromium (VI) recovery from chromium electroplating rinse bath wastewater using Aliquat 336. Results showed that these parameters all had significant effects on chromium (VI) recovery. A pregnant strip solution from a chromium electroplating rinse bath wastewater with 33.4 g/L chromium content, suitable for sodium dichromate production, was generated by 20 vol. % Aliquat 336 in commercial kerosene. The O/A ratio was 1/4 and the equilibrium pH value was 0.87, the as-received pH value. The wastewater was treated with a two-stage countercurrent extraction process to produce a loaded organic phase, which was later stripped at the O/A ratio of two with a 4-M NaOH solution in a two-stage countercurrent stripping process using Taguchi?s optimization technique.

The Optimum Production Rate (OPR) is one of the most important parameters in the evaluation of a mineral deposit. The OPR cam also be expressed as the Optimum Mime Life (OML) in years since the expected mime life is determined by dividing the OPR per year into the estimated ore reserves. Unfortunately, very little time and effort has been directed towards the determination of the OPR. Instead, "rules of thumb" are often applied to select a mime life without due consideration of the economic implications of such a selection. A "justification" for a particular production rate is often based on a pre-conceived arbitrary requirement for a mime life of 5, 10, or 15 years, for example. In this paper it is demonstrated that such arbitrary selections for high-grade/low¬-tonnage mines (such as many underground gold/silver deposits) often lead to sub¬optimal results. In fact, am apparently uneconomic deposit at am arbitrary production rate may be economic at the OPR. Consequently, investment opportunities may be overlooked if one analyzes mime' properties based on arbitrary production rates.

A 16.5-kt/day underground molybdenum mine is being developed at Questa in Northern New Mexico by Molycorp, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Union Oil Company of California. Construction of the underground mine began in 1979, and first production is scheduled for early 1983. A gravity block caving method has been selected for mining the ore. Access to the mine will be through a service shaft, development shaft, and a conveyor decline. The shafts are being sunk under contract and the conveyor decline is being driven by Molycorp. The driving of the decline began in February, 1979 with a 10-man mining class. By the first of May, enough men had been trained to begin a continuous operation and by March 1, 1980 the face had reached the 1500 m mark. The heading is being driven with trackless rubber-tired equipment using a three-boom drill jumbo, 2.7 m3 LHD units and 7.3 m3 trucks. Ground support has been by rock bolts and wire mesh, followed by Fibercrete. A 16.5-kt/d underground molybdenum mine is being developed at Questa in northern New Mexico by Molycorp, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Union Oil Company of California. The new $200-million underground project will revitalize mining and milling activity at Questa, where small scale underground mining first began in 1920. Large scale open-pit mining was initiated in 1965 but now, because of the high stripping ratio, surface mining is being phased out. Construction of the underground mine began in 1979, and first production is scheduled for early 1983. The company expects full capacity - 9 Gg of molybdenum per year - to be reached in 1984.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the response characteristics of commercially available gas, smoke and flame sensors to fires of common combustible mine materials. The experiments were conducted in the large-scale fire gallery located at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory in Fairchance, PA, using ponderosa pine, red oak, Douglas fir, high and low volatile coals, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) conveyor belts, No. 2 diesel fuel and diesel exhaust. All the experiments (except those using No. 2 diesel fuel and the diesel exhaust tests) were conducted in a similar manner, with combustible materials heated rapidly by electrical strip heaters, producing smoldering fires that quickly transitioned into flaming fires. The sensors included a diffusion-type carbon monoxide (CO) sensor, photoelectric- and ionization-type smoke sensors, a video smoke/flame detector and an optical flame detector. Simultaneous measurements were obtained for average gas concentrations, smoke mass concentrations and smoke optical densities in order to quantify the levels of combustion products at the alert and alarm times of the sensors. Because the required sensor alarm levels are 10 ppm and 0.044 m-1 optical density for CO and smoke sensors, respectively, the different sensor alarms are compared to the time at which the CO and smoke reached these alarm levels (Litton et al., 1991). In addition, the potential impact of using smoke sensors that have met the performance standards from accredited testing laboratories is also evaluated using the response of an Underwriters’ Laboratory (UL)-approved combination photoelectric/ionization smoke detector. The results are discussed relative to fire sensor needs that can have a positive impact on mine fire safety.

The network of freight tunnels in Chicago consists of about 62 miles of horseshoeshaped tunnels constructed typically less than 50 feet below ground surface. These tunnels serve as repositories of much infrastructure and should remain serviceable. The tunnels are often impacted by adjacent excavations and the question arises as to the existing state of stress in the final liner. This paper discusses construction of these tunnels and presents the results of finite element analyses which were used to obtain ranges for axial forces and bending moments that have developed in the final liner of the freight tunnels since their construction.

High-intensity wet magnetic separators have been successfully introduced into the mineral processing field over the past ten to fifteen years, due largely to rapid advancements in magnet design. Wet magnetic separation, until recent years, was applied solely to the concentration of minerals of high magnetic susceptibility, such as magnetite, at relatively coarse sizes. Now, however, high-intensity separators are capable of treating weakly paramagnetic minerals and have extended the range of treatable particle size down to about one micrometre(1,2). . One of the more recent-high-intensity separators developed is the Kolm¬Marston Marston type high-gradient magnetic separator (HGMS) (3,4) It consists basically of an iron-clad solenoid surrounding a matrix material - a fine, ferromagnetic steel wool or expanded metal lath. A schematic diagram of the device is shown in Figure 1. Large, highly localized, pertebations of the magnetic field are created by the ferromagnetic matrix. It is these field gradients that are instrumental in developing large magnetic forces which act on the mineral particles. Operation of the separator is simple. Slurried sample is fed through the matrix and, depending upon the mineral parameters of particle size and magnetic susceptibility and. the operating parameters of flow rate, field strength and feed weight, some particles will be attracted to and adhere to the magnetized matrix, while the others will flow through the matrix. The separation is completed by later removing the background magnetic field and flushing the captured mineral particles into a separate container. The process can also be applied on a continuous basis (S).

Based on the research background of 1303 working face return air roadway in Jinyuan Zhaoxian Mine, Shaanxi Province, a method of determining the reasonable spacing of boreholes is proposed based on the stress transfer degree of coal above and between boreholes, combined with the law of plastic zone and energy evolution by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. After drilling pressure relief, the average daily energy of microseismic events decreased by 70%, and those with microseismic energy greater than 104 J decreased by 99.2%. The research has a strong guiding significance and research value for determining the reasonable distance of borehole pressure relief.

Over 2,000 shale gas wells have been drilled in the Pittsburgh Seam longwall reserves. As longwall panels are laid out, some of these shale gas wells must be located in longwall chain pillars. With longwall mining on both sides and the constraint of chain pillar size, gas well in chain pillars are subjected to longwall-induced ground movements and stresses, which could induce deformations in gas well casings Casing deformations are associated with several factors such as overburden geology, surface topography, setback distance, and casing construction. Overburden geology is one important factor that largely determines the locations and levels of deformations in gas well casings Previous NIOSH gas well research has found that casing deformations above the coal seam horizon are smaller under deep cover than unde shallow cover and that casing deformations could occur at the coal seam horizon under deep cover. Recent mine-by cases have provided more insights into the locations and amount of longwall-induced casing deformations as well as the potential occurrence of a large casing deformation at the coal seam horizon. This paper presents three recent mine-by cases with shale gas wells in the chain pillars between two adjacent longwall panels under different overburden depths. Casing deformations were measured by multi-finger caliper surveys and predicted with numerical modeling. With the established numerical model, the effect of overburden depth was further analyzed to investigate the potential occurrence of a large casing deformation at the coal seam horizon under deep cover. These mine-by cases not only provide a general demonstration of how overburden depths can affect longwall-induced stresses and deformations but also give a good indication about the level of casing deformations that could occur under different overburden depths. The study concludes that (1) casing deformations reduce with increase of overburden depths at the gas well; (2) a cementing alternative with production casing uncemented is an effective means to eliminate production casing deformations; and (3) large plastic casing deformation could occur in the production casing at the coat seam horizon under deep cover. The experience and knowledge gained from these mine-by cases would help longwall operators and gaza companies to take appropriate measures to minimize the influence of longwall mining in shale gas wells in chain pillars.

"The Earth’s properties, composition and structure ahead of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) should be mapped for hazard assessment during excavation. We study the use of seismic-exploration techniques for this purpose. We focus on a seismic system for soft soils, where shear waves are better and easier to interpret than compressional waves, as has been shown over the last decade. The system is intended to be deployed on the machine’s cutter head, with a few seismic sources and sufficiently many seismic sensors to tackle spatial variability and noise characteristics. An important property of the newly developed system is its ability to process data with very little human interaction. Images need to be available in near real time, without human interactions slowing down the imaging process. This can be achieved by employing Full Waveform Inversion, which minimizes the difference between modeled and observed data. Because this method may suffer from local minima in the cost function if the data lack low-frequency information, we employ a dedicated seismic source that can generate sufficiently low frequencies for the relevant length scales. With data acquired in a number of field settings that mimic realistic TBM configurations, we show that the designed seismic system can successfully look ahead of the TBM and offers a valuable capability to support decision-making during tunnel excavation. INTRODUCTION While excavating a tunnel with a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), the geology and the ground conditions along the planned tunnel trajectory need to be investigated in order to safely and efficiently carry out the underground operations. This entails detecting the occurrence of boulders, foundations, pipes and faults, necessary to prevent hazards and time-consuming delays in the tunnel boring operations. In order to facilitate ground prediction ahead of a TBM, techniques as used in seismic exploration can be deployed. Two components common to seismic-exploration techniques are data acquisition and processing, the latter including inversion. We will discuss each of these for the application to tunnel excavation with TBM, in particular for soft soils."

Back injuries arising from such activities as lifting and handling objects have been and continue to be constant and undiminishing hazards of the occupational environment. Back pain in one form or another is experienced by almost a1 1 individuals. During the past 30 years, a great deal of accident prevention education has been directed toward the reduction of back injuries. However, it has not produced any great change in the incidence of the injury. The human spine remains the most vulnerable area of the muscul o-skeleta1 system. Back injuries account for about 400,000, or 18 percent, of all disabling work related injuries each year according to the National Safety Council estimates. These serious back injuries are estimated to have cost more than 1.9 billion dollars in 1976 in medical and lost time pay. 1

"Longwall shearers are widely employed in underground coal mines. The reliability of such machine has significant importance for successful mining operations. This paper aims at studying reliability of a longwall shearer using failure data recorded for a year. Data was pre-processed, sorted and selected for analysis. Selected data is then examined using statistical models. Distribution fitting of time-between-failure (TBF) and time-to-repair (TTR) are accomplished using three different models. Goodness-of-fit criteria is used to ascertain the best fitting model. Reliability in terms of mean-time-between-failure (MTBF), and mean-time-to-repair (MTTR) are calculated using the model which best represents the failure data. Exponential distribution best represents the time between failure and lognormal distribution the time to repair data. A well-known risk management technique Failure Mode Effect and Criticality Analysis is used to evaluate the critical breakdowns. Critical system/parts, experiencing regular failures is delineated based on this analysis. INTRODUCTION Mining is a capital intensive process, and huge monetary investment is required to develop and operate a mining project. Heavy and expensive equipment’s are employed in development and operation of these projects. In order to ensure timely completion of set milestones, it is mandatory that equipment’s perform their required task productively. Delays are not unusual owing to breakdown of these equipment’s. Breakdown or failure experienced by any of the equipment pose heavy financial burden. Moreover, frequent times, companies have to employ and dedicate additional resources to make up for such delays. Delays in project is not only detrimental to company’s image in market, but it also interrupts customer commitments. Mines having history of not fulfilling their promise usually get lower commodity price. Penalties are also imposed on the companies defaulting its obligations. Especially, in today’s world where competition among the companies are growing, success means keeping up the commitments in a timely manner. Heavy machinery and equipment are instrumental in success of any project. These machinery and equipment’s have to reliable in a sense that they can perform the set task in given time period. Reliability of these equipment plays a pivotal role in success of any project. The reliability analysis of mining equipment has long history. Many researchers have applied different statistical models for analyzing the reliability of mining machines (Samanta, Sarkar [1]. Kumar and Klefsjö [2] demonstrated the use of the power law process model for reliability assessments of repairable mining machines. Barabady and Kumar [3] performed the reliability analysis from failure data of the crushing plants."

"The EarthScope Transportable Array (TA) of broadband seismometers (www.usarray.org) was deployed across southwest Wyoming from November 2007 through May 2009. During this time period the Array Network Facility (ANF, anf.ucsd.edu) detected and located a total of six seismic events near the trona-mining district. This lack of seismicity is atypical compared to coal mines employing similar mining methods. In this study, eighteen months of continuous seismic data from several nearby TA stations are reexamined using conventional and correlation-based methods to detect seismic events. Waveform cluster analysis and epicentral locations are used to discriminate between mining induced seismicity (MIS) and seismic energy generated from surface blasts at nearby coal mines. The locations and magnitudes of the 143 newly detected MIS events are compared to regional subsidence as measured by Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR). INTRODUCTION An abundance of natural resources and a favorable political climate have made southwest Wyoming home to multiple large mining operations. Among these operations are five underground trona mines located approximately 50 km west of Rock Springs, Wyoming. The trona mines employ room and pillar, longwall, and solution mining methods over an area roughly 900 km2, and produce a sizable portion of the world’s soda ash (Brown 1995). Historically, in the Rock Springs mining district, several relatively large magnitude seismic events have occurred. These events are thought to have been related to mining activity and have caused notable subsidence (Case 1997). The largest event in the region recorded by seismometers, ML 5.1, has been confirmed as the 1995 Solvay Trona Mine collapse (Pechmann et al. 1995). In addition, blasting at surface coal mines near Rock Springs produces significant amounts of seismicity; approximately 50% of all daytime seismic events in the Mountain time zone from 2007 to 2009 locate near an active surface mine in this region (Astiz et al. 2014). Much of the current research related to surface subsidence and induced seismicity focuses on wastewater impoundment (Ellsworth 2013) and hydraulic fracturing. The observable seismicity in geological injection environments is widely variable and McGarr (2014) has argued that, in such environments, the maximum amount of seismic energy that can be released is proportional to the injected volumes. Like injection environments, in extraction (mining) environments seismicity is highly variable depending on many geological and operational variables (Boltz et al. 2012; Carnec and Delacourt 2000; Fritschen 2010; Iannacchione et al. 2005; Sen 2013) and does not always correlate well spatially with subsidence, a surface expression of extraction at depth."

This investigation included a study of three different methods for the acoustic drying of ultrafine coals. Ultrafine coal being defined as coal which passes through a 100 mesh sieve. The first method employed stationary drying of small coal samples in sound fields having frequencies of 12,000 cps and 20,000 cps. Sound intensities up to 150 db were used. The second method employed the use of rotary drying kilns. The effect of such variables as temperature, sound intensity, coal feed rate, air flow rate, and initial moisture content were studied. The third method employed the use of a multi-tiered, vibrating screen dryer. The effect of initial moisture content and residence time were studied.

Below this part of the aquifer, high chloride water can be found everywhere in the State. The accompanying cross section shows the depth to salty water across central Florida. In the center of Florida, fresh water may be found as deep as 2.000 feet, whereas, along the coast it may extend no deeper than about 200 feet. Chloride concentration in small local areas may deviate from the values represented on both the cross section and the main map. "In Pennsylvania’s rich mining history, various forms of room-and-pillar mining have been in use for over 150 years. Longwall mining, introduced in the late 1960s, occupies only the last 60 of those 150 years and now represents the dominant method of extracting coal in the Pittsburgh coalbed. The introduction of longwall mining allowed larger quantities of coal to be extracted in safer and more efficient manners than room-and-pillar mining. However, the associated formation of subsidence basins have elevated both the number and intensity of watersource and surface structure impacts. When these first longwall panels were mined the factors responsible for these impacts were poorly understood and regulations were focused only on surface structures. Today, with over 600 panels mined under a wide range of conditions, these factors are known and regulations have developed to help mitigate water supply and surface structure impacts.The cause and severity of surface effects are thought to be dependent on multiple factors, including the location within the subsidence basin, overburden, panel width, and orientation of the panel. The changing characteristics of over 600 longwall panels mined in the last 60 years are analyzed to determine factors important in subsidence related surface impacts. This study compares the location of the surface impacts with the longwall panel size, overburden, and maximum predicted vertical subsidence. The data shows that changing these characteristics are impacting surface features in a significant manner as measured by the number of company liable reported effects.INTRODUCTIONLongwall mining has occurred in Pennsylvania for over 60 years, and at the current mining rates, longwall mining is expected to continue in the Pennsylvania Pittsburgh Coalbed until the reserves are exhausted. Figure 1 shows all mining that has occurred in the Pittsburgh Coalbed, as well as the area that is left to mine. It is predicted that there are 40 years left of longwall mining on the Pittsburgh Coalbed, under the assumption that 50% of the total 280,000 acres will be mined at the current rate of 3500 acres/year."

The mineral industry and individual processing plants are large consumers of energy. While energy conservation has received some attention in the present Federal Administration National Energy Strategy proposal it is obvious that the mineral industry should also continue to emphasize energy consumption reduction for important economic savings alone. As indicated by other studies, comminution is the largest single consumer of energy in the mineral processing plant (1.3% of total electrical energy consumption in the U.S.A.).1 Fine grinding is the largest portion of this amazing statistic. While substantial energy savings have been demonstrated by new machine developments and improved control methods, undoubtedly there are additional areas in comminution where substantial progress can be made. Some time ago, the U.S. Department of Energy published a report on "Comminution and Energy Consumption" by a committee composed of experts in the field of comminution from industry and academia. They identified the following potential for energy savings by specific areas? Classification device design 9-13% Comminution device design 3-16% Control 9% Grinding additive 3-6% Materials 3% It is apparent that the classification device had the first or second highest savings potential. Obviously, serious research consideration must be given to this technology area. A series of three papers have previously been written on the subject of two stage classification research work for ball mill operation by the authors. Accordingly, a brief review will be made. Previous Research Results on Two Stage Classification The hydrocyclone was selected as the type of classification equipment for this study as it represents by far the majority of the devices used in ball milling. While four different hydrocyclone circuits have been proposed by others,3 only two were considered in this work as illustrated in Figure 1. Most coal mine roofs in the Appalachian region consist of laminated shale, which is prone to brittle failure. Accurate modeling of shale roofs is vital for studying cutter failures of these shale roofs, and ordinary and formational bedding planes play a significant role in the response off the shale roof to mining-induced stresses. This paper presents a robust method for constructing three-dimensional shale roof models using limited borehole cores and leveraging image processing techniques. The approach begins with image extraction from shale cores. Then, we extract the portions that feature the core and employ image-stitching techniques to merge them seamlessly. Once the images are stitched, they are duplicated horizontally and merged to create a cross-sectional plane image representing a shale roof. This roof cross-sectional plane image serves as an input to our proprietary Digital Image Processing (DIP) algorithm, which is adept at extracting ordinary bedding planes (interfaces that represent color transitions between a single shale unit). The extraction process involves transforming discrete core points (ordinary bedding plane pixels) into continuous lines representing ordinary bedding planes. Finally, extending this method into the third dimension, the model is further extrapolated to form a comprehensive three-dimensional shale roof. Through this process, the geometry information of ordinary bedding planes can be extracted for each type of shale in cores, including sandy shale, gray shale, dark shale, etc. This work bridges the gap between limited core data and comprehensive 3D geological modeling, offering valuable insights into identifying and quantifying the variations in different shale roof geologies.

Introduction Coal is the US's largest indigenous fossil fuel resource and is used to power 57% of this country's electrical generation (NCA, 1986). Congress, however, is focusing its attention on the acid rain issue and public sentiment is leaning toward further curtailments of SO2, NO, and particulates from utility and industrial coal-burning facilities. The Cool Water plant has proven that integrated-gasification-combined-cycle (IGCC) technology can reliably produce economical electrical power while limiting SO2, NOx, and particulates to a rate of only one-tenth of the federal New Source Performance Standards for coal-fired plants. Process water requirements at Cool Water are 40% less than those of a conventional coal-fired utility plant equipped with flue-gas desulfurization units for stack gas scrubbing, thus reducing waste water treatment requirements (Clark and Shorter, 1985). The IGCC technology employed at Cool Water has now been demonstrated to efficiently convert coal to electricity in an environmentally superior fashion. The Cool Water Coal Gasification Program is an unincorporated California association of six partners whose commitment is proving that the integration of gasification with combined cycle power production (IGCC) is commercially viable and environmentally safe. The 120 MW Cool Water plant began commercial production on June 24, 1984. The Program is operating it for a five-year commercial demonstration period.
