The pH control system at Kennecott Copper Corporation's Nevada Mines Division concentrator consists of two independent systems, lime dilution and lime addition. Lime dilution is accomplished in a mixing tank where slaked lime and water are introduced proportionately. The desired dilution of the milk of lime is determined by the electrical inputs provided by eight pH probes, one per grinding section. The inputs are averaged and applied to a time base generator. The summation output of the time base generator determines the proportion of lime and water that are to be mixed and applies this input to a voltage sensitive switching device. The switching device provides a signal to one of two relays which will add either slaked lime or water, dependent upon the summation output. The entire cycle is based on a two-minute repetition rate to allow for sufficient mix time. Responsivity is controlled by maintaining a limited maxi- mum solution level in the mix tank. Lime addition is controlled independently within each grinding section. The electrical input from the pH probe in a given section controls the solenoid valves which provide lime to each of the ball mills. The valves remain open within a time range capable of maintaining the pH of flotation feed at a given set point.

Aggregate resources should be considered primary factors in urban development. Resource planning is essential because land values, previous construction, or zoning restrictions often preempt exploitation of aggregate deposits within an urban area. Sequential land use practices allow development of areas prior to urban development. Population and aggregate consumption trends in Austin, Texas, indicate that substantial quantities of reserves will be lost to future development. Aggregate materials are present in nearby seas. However, a comparison of transportation and reclamation costs indicates that reclaiming land after mineral extraction can be significantly cheaper than transporting materials longer distances.

The development of larger size flotation machines, which started in the 1950's and 1960's, is still proceeding. The largest mechanical flotation machines avail-able today have unit volumes in the range of 38.2 to 43.9 M3 (1,350 to 1,550 cft). Designs for mechanical flotation cells of unit volumes as large as 70.8 m3 (2500 cft) are available. The development of these "giant" flotation machines has been and continues to be motivated by the increasingly critical forces of higher energy and capital costs, decreasing ore grades, and lower (real) prices for the products. As an expansion of a previous publication, this paper reports the further development of an improved mechanism for these large flotation machines. The starting point in the develop¬ment of a new mechanism was the identification of design and performance features of existing machines where improvements were desirable. The result of this work was a mechanism which s is an improvement over existing designs. This new design is characterized by an efficient overhung stator and a vortex profile rotor. The overhung design of the stator removes unnecessary and undesirable baffling in the lowest parts of the tank, while maintaining a quiescent froth layer. This results in lower power consumption and better pulp circulation and solids suspension. The vortex profile rotor acts as an efficient pump, with higher pulp recirculation rates as evidenced by the increased air dispersion capabilities, good solids suspension, and low power consumption.

During the ongoing research into the possible applications of Virtual Reality in underground operations, the AIMS Research Unit has developed a user-interface driven program which enables a user to input the geometry of underground mines, and add equipment and working processes in order to produce an accurate simulation of their operation. This paper describes the main features of this system (VR-MINE). Virtual Reality is a field which has grown out of three dimensional computer graphics techniques, and allows a user to move freely around a model held within the computer's memory. Movement around this model is carried out by the use of intuitive peripherals such as joysticks, with the user's view from their position within the model being produced in real time on a computer monitor or other device (such as a headset). This enables a user to interact with any three dimensional model and see the results of their actions immediately. VR-MINE is broken into two separate programs, both running under Microsoft Windows 3.1 or above. The first, the editor, allows the user to develop the mine layout and add equipment and personnel. The mine geometry is considered to be made up of various types of objects, for example a straight roadway segment which can be inclined, a junction roadway segment, and a turning segment. The geometry can then saved into a file to be loaded in by the second program of VR-MINE, the viewer. This generates a real- istic representation of the mine, with undulating floors and walls. It also has the ability to display multiple windows on the mine at the same time, which are arranged interactively. The simulation occurs within this program, with the user traversing the model in real time to examine possible areas of improvement in operations. This paper gives a number of examples of how the AIMS Re- search Unit has applied this technology to a range of underground mining scenarios to improve the safety of workers in the under- ground environment. The application discussed include computer graphics and Virtual Reality systems to training, risk analysis, visualisation, simulation, accident investigation and major hazard planning.

INTRODUCTION The authors, by means of this paper, will attempt to show the role of Induced Polarization and Resistivity surveys in the discovery of the orebodies of Gibraltar Mines Limited (N.P.L.). In this paper, we will also attempt to show the importance of conducting large enough surveys in order to properly evaluate the results obtained from these surveys. LOCATION The orebodies of Gibraltar Mines Limited (N.P.L.) are located on the western slope of Granite Mountain, central British Columbia (52°30' north, 122°16' west) (See Fig. 1). The property lies approximately 28 miles north of Williams Lake, B.C. and can be reached by way of 10 miles of newly improved road from McLeese Lake, on the Cariboo Highway. The area in and around Gibraltar Mines has a moderate topographic relief with elevations between 3,500 and 4,100 feet. {EARLY HISTORY AND GEOLOGY The present Gibraltar Mines property before amalgamation consisted of the Pollyanna property (Duval-Canex) and the Gibraltar property (original Gibraltar Mines) as well as some Coast Silver and McLeese Lake Copper claims (See Fig. 2). The Pollyanna property was first described in the 1917 B.C. Minister of Mines Report which referred to it as the "Rainbow Group". The development at that time consisted of several open-cuts on copper bearing quartz veins.

INTRODUCTION The Magma mine, located at Superior, AZ, some 100 km (60 miles) east of Phoenix, was discovered in 1875, and was originally mined for silver. The property was acquired by W. B. Thompson who formed the Magma Copper Co. in 1910. Prior to 1965, square-set mining and cut-and-fill methods were used to mine steeply dipping veins at Magma. Ore was moved to the chute by gravity in the square-set stopes and by slusher in the cut-and-fill stopes. The stopes were gobbed with waste from the surface and development headings in the mine. The original square-set method of mining was modi¬fied in order to extract replacement ore bodies in limestones that dipped at 0.52 rad (30°) and varied in thick¬ness from 4.6 to 38 m (15 to 125 ft). Mining of these ore bodies was done by starting at the upper lateral ex¬tremities and retreating to the access openings. The timber square sets and cribbing were used as temporary support, the ground being allowed to cave as the mining retreated. It was found, however, that mining in such a manner was very inefficient; safety hazards increased be¬cause of the blocky and fractured characteristics of the ore and the weakness of the hanging wall. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The undercut-and-fill method of mining is now the primary stoping method used at Magma, and no pillars are left for later extraction. Four ore bodies are pres¬ently being mined. These ore bodies (see Fig. 1) dip conformably at 0.52 rad (30°) to the east with the host limestone and shale sediments, their average strike length is about 122 m (400 ft), and their thickness varies from 9 to 38 m (30 to 125 ft). The ore bodies are separated by varying thicknesses of barren rock. Three of them come together at various elevations primarily in the area of the main feeder fault, but there is an apparent horizontal displacement of about 23 m (75 ft) on the main feeder fault which complicates stope layout. The method as originally applied has been modified in order to mine more efficiently ore bodies that are 9 m (30 ft) or more in thickness. The modification was made to mine all the ore at a given elevation before dropping down for the cut below. The advantage of this is that mining is done on a horizontal plane and there¬fore muck removal can be mechanized. Also multiple faces are made available, thereby improving overall min¬ing efficiency. Another major change made was to carry a 6.7-m (22-ft) face when mining the top sill and a 6.4-m (21-ft) face when mining under fill rather than the former standard 3.35-m (11-ft) high face. This change lengthens the mining cycle and cuts mat prepa¬ration costs in half. Stopes are laid out (see Fig. 2) so that maximum mining panels are available and yet one stope crew will not tie up too much of the ore reserve. One stope might consist of as many as 20 panels, and these panels are divided evenly on opposite sides of the extraction cross¬cut. The stope layout is planned so that the maximum tramming distance to the orepass will not exceed 30.5 m (100 ft) on the crosscut and 38 m (125 ft) in the panel. Computer-aided control of a mining machine pl aces its operator in a safe, remote location, thus reducing health and safety risks, Sensing systems that provide machine position (xy coordinate) and heading (yaw), are extremely useful in aiding remote positioning of mining machines. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has developed two sensing systems for position and heading information: A scanning laser system based on the Lasernet sensor and a mechanical position and heading system based on linear-position transducers. The Bureau is also investigating a system from Honeywell, the modular azimuth and positioning system that employs ring-laser gyroscopes. This paper presents a brief background and status of these sensing systems as applied to the remote positioning tasks of a continuous mining machine. Included are field test results of each system operating in a room-and-pillar research section at a cooperating mine in West Virginia.

The leaching kinetics of chalcopyrite in ammonium iodide solutions with iodine has been studied using rotating disc. The variables studied J include the concentrations of lixiviants, rotation speed, pH of the solution, reaction temperature, and reaction product layer. The leaching rate was found to be independent with the disc rotating speed. The apparent activation energy was measured to be about 50 kJ/mole from 15°C to 35°C, and 30.3 kJ/mole from 35°C to 60°C. Conveyor systems persist in being a source of injuries and fatalities in the mining industry. To reduce these incidents, better methods are needed to enhance the monitoring of probable hazards and improve situational awareness during the normal operation and maintenance of conveyor systems. To address these issues, researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) continue to investigate emerging technologies that show the potential to improve miner safety around conveyors. This paper presents a feasibility assessment by NIOSH researchers of a fully integrated, commercially available wireless Internet of Things (IoT) system to improve situational awareness around conveyor systems.

"Froth flotation is the most widely used method of separating fine coal, especially coal with coking properties. However, froth flotation is not efficient for treating ultrafine coal and coarse coal particles. Our previous fundamental test results demonstrated that cavitation-generated nanobubbles around 700 nm in diameter can significantly improve coal and phosphate flotation performance over a wide particle size range. In this study, the effect of nanobubbles on the flotation performance of different particle size fractions of coal was investigated using a bank of 10-L flotation cells, a specially designed 50-mm inside diameter column and a 152-mm inside diameter column. It was found that nanobubbles that were either directly formed on or subsequently attached to the surface of coal particles during the froth flotation process improved flotation efficiency. The use of nanobubbles in a bank of mechanical cells flotation and column flotation significantly increased the flotation recovery at a given product grade. Nanobubbles increased the flotation rate constants of different coal particle sizes. The presence of nanobubbles in flotation slurry could extend the lower and the upper particle size limits for effective coal flotation.IntroductionFor minus 0.6 mm fine coal or minus 0.15 mm ultrafine coal particles, froth flotation is known to be the most efficient and the most cost-effective separation technique. However, flotation efficiency decreases sharply with ultrafine and relatively coarse coal particles. Studies have shown that the low flotation efficiency of ultrafine particles is mainly due to the low probability of bubble-particle collision (Yoon et al., 1989; Ralston and Dukhin, 1999). Enhanced flotation of fine and ultrafine coal can be achieved by increasing collision and attachment probabilities.The top size of particles that can be recovered by flotation depends on the combination of mineral properties and flotation devices. Turbulence in flotation devices is an important factor that affects the stability of bubble-particle aggregates. Even in the flotation of fine particles, bubble-particle detachment can significantly influence the kinetics of flotation taking place in mechanical cells, which provide intensive turbulent agitation (Deglon et al., 1999). Coarse particle flotation is more difficult, because increased agitation is required to maintain particles in suspension and coarse particles are more likely to detach under turbulent conditions (Mankosa and Kohmuench, 2002; Soto and Barbery, 1991). More efficient attachment of particles and improved flotation rate has been observed when tiny bubbles coexist with conventional-sized flotation bubbles (Attalla et al., 2000; Tao et al., 2010; Fan et al., 2010a, b, c, d; Fan et al., 2012)."

One of the analytical problems in exploration geochemistry is the choice of a method of sample attack which would be rapid, simple and reliable in terms of precision and discrimination between different concentration levels of elements sought. The wet sample attacks currently used in analysis of silicate rocks vary from total decomposition to leaching by weak extractants. The total decomposition of such materials is usually achieved either by alkaline fusion or hydrofluoric acid attack. The first method requires the use of platinum vessels which is both expensive and slow for batch operation. The second type of attack is more widely applied in rock geochemistry1, but it is still relatively slow for exploration purposes and requires extra care (especially when hydrofluoric acid is used in mixture with perchloric acid). Considerable improvement in speed can be achieved by using the sample attacks which release only part of the metal present in a rock.2,4 One of such attacks is the leaching of pulverized rocks by hot aqua regia.3 Another technique widely used in geochemical prospecting involves fusion of the samples with potassium pyrosulfate (or bisulfate) followed by an acid leach of the malt .5 One of the advantages of these techniques is the use of glassware in decomposition stage which considerably increases the analytical productivity. It should be noted that partial chemical attacks tend to extract from a rock mainly the non-silicate metal which may give results more significant for exploration purposes than the analysis for total metal.

In this investigation, the changes in the grindability of both ulexite and colemanite related with the different structural modifications created by the heat treatment were examined with respect to work index (Wi). The effects of the heat treatment temperature and time on grindability index were also investigated. It was observed that, heat treatment significantly affected on the grindability of ulexite. The work index of original ulexite was found 7.11 kWh/shton and decreased to 3.5 kWh/shton level within 200-480°C for 60 minutes. On the other hand, the work index of original colemanite was found as 6.48 kWh/shton and no appreciable change was observed when heated up to 320°C. Thermally assisted comminution can be used to improve the grindability characteristics of ulexite. Besides, the different behaviour of ulexite and colemanite under heat treatment can be used for their separation. The artificial mixture of ulexite and colemanite could be separated with over 90% recovery by utilizing their different grindability characteristics by thermal treatment, semi-autogeneous grinding and screening.

"INTRODUCTION As we push further into the 21st century and closer to a more efficient mine, safety and operational enhancements are the two major keys towards attaining success. The Crusher Vision Automation System (CVAS) is a technological advance that will allow an operator to achieve higher safety and higher operational goals in the same piece of equipment. The CVAS is a patent pending system and method for measuring and maintaining the closed side setting (CSS) on gyratory crushers. In the same equipment and technology package, the CVAS will also allow safer placement of main shaft pieces for maintenance and replacement. This technology yields multiple uses and allows a site to significantly enhance safety and operational efficiencies. This measurement technique is used to provide more accurate data and faster data collection times than current techniques used today. It will give crusher operators accurate and reliable measurement for the CSS in a live, operating environment. Measurement data can be collected in five minutes allowing for fast adjustment of the mantle position and subsequent enhancement and streamlining of a crusher and downstream flowsheet. The advantage of this system is that it is permanently mounted at the crusher location, where the operator can turn the system on and off as many times as they like throughout the day with a goal of maintaining a constant CSS gap based on production and maintenance criteria to help streamline operations and enhance safety efficiencies.Regarding its other main functional area, mainshaft maintenance, it allows this work to be performed remotely while keeping personnel safer and out of harm’s way. SAFETY ENHANCEMENT The safety factor enhancement with this system is extreme. It does not require the use of overhead cranes, cleaning out the crusher, lowering people into the crusher or having the operator lower paint cans or lead balls into the crusher pocket while the crusher is in operation for measuring the setting. In order to perform the CSS measurements, the operator only needs to operate the laser through manipulation of a joystick while watching the video feed. Danger of a person falling into the crusher while trying to take measures is eliminated, as are the effects of handling lead balls and tracer dyes."

The quality of our environment is of great importance to all of us. Today, there is a great public concern about the degradation of our air, land, and water and the resultant slow death of our planet Earth. The miner has always been concerned with his environment. Historically, mining has been a part of the frontier. As a result, the miner has pioneered and developed many parts of the world. In the beginning, he had to hack out a place for his mine, himself, and his family. He was given accolades and praise for his accomplishments. Now, however, he is attacked as a ravager of the landscape. It was and is no different on the Marquette Iron Range in Marquette County, located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Iron ore was discovered in 1845 and mining was begun by 1848. Over nearly 1 ¼ centuries, a total of 379,197,000 tons have been shipped to market. Ports, docks, railroads, and towns all had to be built in order to get that tonnage out to iron and steel makers. In those early days the environment had to be mastered, not pampered.

"Efforts have been tried to apply the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials. Through the present investigation, a protocol to make construction materials using the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash has been set up. The experiment results of the present work also help set up the working conditions such as activation temperature and time, the concentration of NaOH, the addition of Ca(OH)2, forming pressure, mine tailing to fly ash weight ratio, curing temperature and curing time. The findings of the present work provide a novel method for the geopolymerization of the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials, such as bricks for construction and road pavement. INTRODUCTION In mining activity, after the valuable materials are extracted from ores, millions of tons of solid rejects, i.e., mine tailings, are stored in the tailings dam, which occupies a huge area of land and leads to high monetary, environmental and ecological costs. For example, the impoundment of mine tailings can bring with serious environmental problems such as mine dust and tailing dam failure. On the other hand, the making of general construction material results in a lot of greenhouse gas emission. Therefore, it is of great interest to utilize mine tailings, for which a lot of energy has been consumed during the comminution process, as construction materials using the novel geopolymerization technique. (Xu and van Deventer, 2000, 2002a, 2002b; Pacheco-Torgal et al., 2007, 2008; Zhang et al., 2011; Ahmari et al., 2012) Fly ash is another industrial waste which needs to be carefully impounded because of its potential impact on environment. Many efforts have been tried to utilize fly ash as construction materials because it is a silica/alumina rich aluminosilicate source. In addition, the facts that fly ash is quite reactive to alkali and its particle size is usually very small (< 50 microns) make the specific material an ideal source for the geopolymerization process to make construction materials. Geopolymerization is a process of obtaining a polymeric structure from aluminosilicate by dissolving aluminosilicate sources in a strong alkali (NaOH) solution at an elevated temperature. After being cured at an elevated temperature for a specific time, the geopolymerization product shows a greatly increased compressive strength. Therefore, the product can be used as construction material such as bricks and road pavement. It provides a very promising method to apply aluminosilicate sources such as mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials."

The abstract discusses the issue of mine equipment fires caused by hot surface ignition of flammable liquids. The research investigates the ignition probability of liquid fuels (diesel, engine oil, hydraulic fluid) on different metal surfaces (stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel) under various ventilation speeds. The results show that the type of metal and ventilation speed influence the ignition temperature, with diesel being the most easily ignited fuel and carbon steel requiring a higher ignition temperature. The study provides data for understanding equipment mine fires and developing mitigation strategies.

Tailings (flotation waste) that is formed during copper production may be considered in the class of valuable wastes due to the amount of copper it contains. Owing to the decreasing grade values in copper ores, utilization of wastes such as tailings that carry certain amounts of copper as secondary sources has become a necessity in both the economic and environmental sense. This study investigated the usage conditions of five different ammonia salts as leaching reactants for the purpose of selective extraction of copper from tailings. For this purpose, the effects of parameters such as leaching temperature and leaching time were examined at different concentrations of ammonium hydroxide, ammonium carbonate, ammonium nitrate, ammonium chloride, and ammonium persulfate. "The data from EPB cells located inside the pressurized chamber of EPB TBMs and also the data from the pressure sensors in grout lines are quite important in controlling the EPB operation. However, there have always been questions in regards to pressure distribution along the shield body. Could the pressure distribution data be used to come up with potential locations for ground loss? Does the overcut region, the space between the shield body and the maximum cut diameter, consist of broken material or EPB muck, or does that region consist primarily of void space? During free air interventions, how does pressure distribute along the TBM body? To address these questions, one of the two EPB TBMs used in the Northgate Link Light Rail project in Seattle, WA is equipped with EPB cells in front and rear body to monitor the pressure distribution along the TBM body in addition to the standard 6 EPB cells located inside the cutterhead chamber and pressure sensors located at the grout lines. This paper discusses the results of this study and weighs on the valuable data that can be collected by using the shield pressure sensors.INTRODUCTIONThe cutterhead of the TBM is normally equipped with overcutters on the cutterhead periphery which extend into the annular space beyond the diameter of the TBM shield. Thus, the overcutters serve to disturb and excavate some of the ground in the annular space which reduces friction and resistance around the TBM body. This phenomenon is necessary to help the TBM steer and navigate around curves. Additionally, the shield of an EPB TBM is also often shaped like a cone, with the diameter decreasing from the front to the tail shield. This conical shape also helps the TBM to navigate because material that is cut by the cutterhead either gets pulled into the cutterhead or it gets pushed out of the way – around the cutterhead and into the annular space. In EPB tunneling, the conditioned material from the face that does not get pulled into the cutterhead mixing chamber flows into the shield gap and pressurizes the surrounding ground. Additionally, grout can travel from the segment annulus into the shield gap. The pressure in the shield gap mainly depends on the pressure of the material at the face and the grouting pressure behind the tail shield."
