The Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) is currently expanding capacity by extending their Metro system from South of the city to the North East end of the island. The scope of Contract 704 involved excavating a long reach of tunnel which had a complex rock/soil interface comprised of fresh granite overlaid by clayey sand. Two 6.5 m diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM’s were used to bore the tunnels. These machines were designed so that both hard and soft rock could be excavated. The cutter head was equipped with a combination of both rippers and disk cutters. Soil conditioning was achieved by delivering foam through a multiple port injection system. This very irregular profile of the interfaces posed many challenges to the equipment and the people.

The principle of microwave drying of fine coal is based on the selective absorption of microwaves by water. Coal is a poor absorber of microwaves. As a result, water can be removed from fine coal by selectively heating water molecules. One of the difficult problems during microwave heating is the exact determination of temperature in the core of the materials. The electromagnetic energy absorption in coal/water mixtures during microwave drying is controlled by several factors including the dielectric properties of the constituents. In this paper, electromagnetic and thermal models of coal are presented that can predict the energy absorption and temperature distribution during microwave drying.

An investigation of the removal of finely divided silica, coal, and alumina particles less than 20,µm in size has been carried out using liquid fluidized and packed beds. The bed particles used included 48x100, 100x150, and 150>200-mesh silica, corundum, and ilmenite particles. Important variables examined included surface charge, flow rate, pH and amount of bed particles. Surface charge has been identified as the most important variable in this system. Van der Waals force also assumes a very important role in the recovery of fine particles in fluidized and packed beds. In addition to interaction between large and fine particles, interaction between fine particles themselves assumes an important role in the overall recovery.

In April. 1990 Addwest Minerals acquired the Phillips Ranch sulfur property. The sulfur deposit, hosted by the Permian Castile anhydrite, occurs as two distinct elongate. parallel orebodies within a series of northeast-trending grabens. After completing a positive feasibility study, based, in part. on successful drilling programs by Addwest Minerals and previous operators, the decision was made to place the property into production. Utilizing an existing on-site kasch plant, plus significant portions of the recently purchased Texasgulf Comanche Creek Frasch plant. Addwest is currently constructing an 800 long ton per day Frasch mining facility.

Arizona, in 1966, has continued to be the site of an extensive and intensive search for metallic mineral deposits. Over fifty separate entities--companies and individuals--have been actively engaged in mineral exploration programs, both large and small, in the Basin-and-Range portion of the State. Certainly, copper has been primarily responsible for the major efforts, although associated gold, silver, and molybdenum mineralization also has been important in the economic evaluation of potential copper deposits. It is not difficult to explain why the Basin-Range portion of Arizona is receiving such attention. Part of the story, undoubtedly familiar to most, can be illustrated by reference to three graphical presentations. For example, Figure 1 shows Arizona's annual copper production for the period 1955-1965, inclusive, and it demonstrates that new records of production have been accomplished in each of the past 6 years and in 9 of the last 11 years.

This paper examines Bolivia's General Environmental Bill recently passed by Congress: a multi-purpose law with two primary objectives: a) the protection and conservation of the environment, and b) the promotion of sustainable development. In this law, environmental benefits are emphasized by stating general principles, not by attempting to define the means. Regulations are left to the writing of subsequent complementary codes. This paper shows that much of the controversy surrounding the legislation disappears when it is seen as guide rather than an operational part of Bolivia's industrial policy. In essence, the law addresses recent environmental awareness in a region more anxious than ever to speed economic growth.

Alkaline solution rinsing for decommissioning of an acid-leached residue was evaluated by column experiments, neutralization tests and solid characterization by XRD and SEM. It was found that consumption of a strong alkali during residue neutralization was much greater than that required to neutralize the soluble acidity. The excess alkalinity was consumed by solid-phase conversions unnecessary for the success of decommissioning. Alkaline rinsing did not reduce the time requirement for decommissioning when compared with plain water rinsing. Since no benefit is gained to compensate for the additional costs associated with excess alkali consumption, we conclude that strong alkaline solution rinsing is in fact inferior to simple water rinsing.

Liquids containing suspended solids are encountered in most mineral processing applications. Solids levels cover a very wide range, from ppm levels in cooling water systems to slurries containing greater than 70% solids. When the aqueous phase is recycled or further processed, a solid/liquid separation process is used. Chemical additives used to carry out this process are called coagulants and flocculants. In other cases, one seeks to control or modify the properties of the suspension. Dispersants are chemicals used to aid in suspending solids in a liquid as well as to control the properties of the resulting suspension. Dispersants find a range of uses in mining and mineral processing such as scale control, filter aids, flotation aids, and slurry viscosity modification. Materials used as dispersants include inorganic salts, alkalies, organic surfactants, and polyelectrolytes. This paper discusses the use of dispersants in mineral processing, with an emphasis on control of slurry viscosity. The mechanism of dispersion and factors that affect the choice of dispersant will be discussed.

The effect of a surfactant, designated Syntex, on the wetting and spreading of hydrocarbon oil on molybdenite surfaces (faces) has been investigated experimentally through measurements of zeta potentials and factorially designed flotation tests. These studies indicate that Syntex has a positive effect in increasing molybdenite recovery in the rougher flotation circuit at the Climax mill. The analysis of experimental data using DLVO theory shows that the controlling factor in determining the magnitude of the repulsive energy barrier preventing oil from wetting and spreading on the molybdenite faces is the MoS2 zeta potential and the vapor oil droplet size. The role of Syntex in this case seems to be related to the decrease and stabilization of MoS2 zeta potential by Syntex adsorption and also to the emulsifying action of Syntex on vapor oil to provide a more favorable oil particle size.

Outokumpu Electronics has designed a new on-line coal slurry ash analyzer, based on an instrument developed at Michigan Technological University. The primary goal was to build an accurate instrument at the lowest possible cost. The instrument determines ash content from measurements of X-ray backscatter, iron K, fluorescence, and low-energy y-ray absorption. It is capable of measuring the ash content with a standard error of 1.1% ash over an analysis range of 9-21% ash and 7-22% solids. The analyzer was tested on coals from United States, Poland, Great Britain and the USSR.

What does the information age mean to mining companies? The perception of greatly increased access to information is based on modern communications through ‘smart’ fax machines and computer networks. Computer media allow us to `talk' to the President or to a sister in Australia. If we need data to help put together a mining permit, we can find that data somewhere on computer media. The vast amount of easily accessible information quickly overwhelms us. To avoid `information burnout,' we must learn to target searches and be able to discriminate between dross and information that is useful to our goals. If you watch commercial TV, you have learned to screen out most product commercials. A similar screening process must be applied to computerized information sources. You may need to sort through a lot of irrelevant information before finding the pearls you are looking for. ‘Smart’ fax machines can send information with no direct human intervention. MINES FaxBac, for example, from the US Bureau of Mines instructs you to enter four-digit numbers to have particular reports sent directly to your fax machine. Software vendors use a similar system to supply information about their products. You select an item by number, and the related brochure is faxed to your machine. To compete, the industry must maintain access to as many information sources as possible. The availability of computers and software for almost every conceivable application allows us to accomplish work faster than we ever thought possible, even as recently as 10 years ago. Most mining companies have become aware that doing geology, reserves, mine planning and other technical tasks completely by hand is much too slow. The world moves faster, drilling happens faster, mining happens faster, all related activities happen faster. We no longer have the manpower or time to keep all maps. calculations and records up to date.

The Paso Diablo coal project is located in the Guasare Basin in the northwestern region of Venezuela near the border with Colombia. In 1987, Carbones del Guasare SA, a joint venture comprised of Carbozulia and A.A. Antilles Coal (an Arco and AgipCoal joint venture) was formed to develop the Paso Diablo coal reserves for world markets. Regional drilling has indicated a coal resource of more than 6 Gt (6.6 billion st). Further exploration has delineated the Paso Diablo deposit as an area particularly suited for cost-effective surface mining. The calculated economically minable reserves of this area (200 Mt or 220 million st) and the coal quality characteristics are based on extensive core drilling programs. Initial coal mining operations began in August of 1987 and the mine is presently producing at a rate of 1.5 Mt/a (1.65 million stpy). The coal is hauled about 85 km (53 miles) to a barge loading terminal at Santa Cruz de Mara using highway-type haul trucks. This paper summarises the experimental approach to spiral modelling at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, University of Queensland, involving the use of plastic density tracers to determine partitioning performance on three models of coal spiral. This work has led to phenomenological models of the three spiral profiles most widely used in the Australian coal industry. The results from a parallel computational fluid dynamics approach to spiral modelling currently underway at the University of New South Wales are also presented. The computational simulation has been successfully applied to generic spiral geometries and is capable of predicting the fluid phase three dimensional flow fields and corresponding free surface profiles for moderate Reynolds' number and Froude numbers. Simulation predictions are compared with experimental results from a Mineral Deposits LD9 coal spiral.

INTRODUCTION The prediction of the engineering behavior of a rock mass depends upon the systematic analyses of the results of an exploration program, and upon the recognition of the significant rock properties in the early stages of excavation. The variations in rock properties in different geologic terrains and the state of the geotechnical art preclude complete success in the former case, and we therefore must rely heavily on the experience gained in the latter phase. The geotechnical information obtained from these two phases is only of value to the design engineer when applied to the rock behavior during excavation and subsequent plant operation. Pertinent questions which must be answered include: how does the joint orientation and frequency effect tunnel support and overall cavern stability; how does the depth of surficial soil or weathering effect foundations or slope stability for portal cuts; are there permeable zones within the rock mass that could lead to leakage problems around penstocks and is the material in these zones soluble or likely to pipe in the long term; and does the proposed engineering structure fit the terrain, or will it inevitably lead to problems requiring extensive remedial treatment. Efficient methods for removal of copper from heap leach solutions without mobile organic phases are a current mining industry need. To satisfy this need a selective, high-capacity, durable solid material is required. The INEEL has developed a set of materials based upon current solvent extraction chelates that provide selective copper concentration in the presence of high concentrations of iron. In contrast to conventional solvent extractions, our strategy anchors the chelators to a non-polymeric solid substrate through the use of a custom designed linker molecule. The fundamental synthetic routes to these materials have already been established and attachment to the solid surfaces achieved in an efficient manner. Our continuing research is focused on the optimization of the synthetic pathways to these solid materials and the evaluation of their copper capturing capabilities.

Implementation of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 is negatively affecting production of coal used for generating electric power in Indiana and elsewhere in the Midwest. Required reduction of sulfur compounds from gas streams, or flue gas desulfurization (FGD), as mandated by these laws has encouraged installation of wet limestone scrubbers at many generating plants. Increasingly stringent requirements that will begin in 2000 are expected to necessitate even more extensive use of such scrubbers. Indiana has large deposits of limestone-the major consumable alkaline raw material for scrubbers-that can meet an expected demand of several million tons per year. Limestones are not, however, all the same. Different limestone units behave quite differently when used as scrubbing agents under differing conditions in actual practice. Decisions about FGD scrubber details would be more meaningful if made with thorough knowledge of which rock units contain the most efficient FGD limestones and which sites of suitable stone are located nearest to power plants. Even though abundant carbonate rocks occur in Indiana, their suitability in scrubbing systems has received little attention, and few attempts have been made to match details of stone resources to the needs of various utility scrubbing systems. Optimization of the fit between geologic characteristics of the existing limestones and prospective scrubber systems should allow for greatly improved planning and operation of FGD systems with attendant lower overall costs. Electric utilities have developed computer models to predict FGD system operations (i.e., the FGD-PRISM model of the Electric Power Research Institute). These models require geologic data such as reactivity that are commonly unavailable. We generated data needed for the model during a cooperative effort among the Indiana Department of Commerce, the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS), The Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IP&L), and the Indiana Mineral Aggregates Association. Our goal was to provide missing geologic details of Indiana scrubber-stone raw materials and apply them to the FGD-PRISM model to provide general guidance to determine which geologic units can provide stone for most efficient sulfur removal. Results of the model for selected limestones and parameters specific to one IP&L generating plant were calculated. Geologic data generated may be applied to other generating operations, and our examples should help other utilities optimize their FGD strategies. Several hundred samples from more than 30 active quarries were collected and their physical properties determined. Grindability values ranged from 7.2 to 21.7 for 50 selected samples. Acid-insoluble residues of less than 1% to 13% were found. Dissolution rates as an index of reactivity varied over two orders of magnitude for the selected set of samples. These data plus chemical analyses and Ca/Mg ratios were entered into a generic scrubber model to determine rates of stone use and scrubber efficiency for various stone. Removal of SO2 was projected by this model to range from 89% to 98% with stone utilization rates from 91% to 93%. Excellent scrubber stone sources were found in Mississippian rocks in central and southern Indiana. Rocks of the Ste. Genevieve and Salem Limestones were especially efficient. Even small amounts of dolomite, clay minerals, and quartz diminished a stone's usefulness for FGD scrubbing.

Phelps Dodge Mining Company (Phelps Dodge) is operating a pressure leach vessel (PLV) for copper concentrates at the Bagdad Mine facility in Arizona. This single PLV unit was engineered and constructed based on continuous laboratory testing, reaction chemistry and kinetics, and available pressure vessel technology. The challenge of designing for optimum process retention time, agitation, oxygen mass transfer, temperature and pressure will be reviewed in this paper. The PLV interior lining, agitation equipment and compartment configuration chosen for the PLV will also be reviewed.
