From 2013–2017, there were over 1,120 documented injuries, including fourteen fatalities, from ground falls in underground mines in the United States (MSHA 2017). The majority of these ground-fall injuries were not caused by a major roof collapse, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Roof screen can significantly reduce the number of these injuries and has been widely used in underground coal mines for surface control. Because of the potential of reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is further evaluating the performance characteristics of welded-wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program using the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in NIOSH’s Bruceton Research Center Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. The load-displacement characteristics of an 8-ft x 12-ft area of 8-gauge welded-wire screen were evaluated using a test frame designed for testing multiple load-pull locations. In previous tests, load-pull contact was always in the center of the bolted screen section. In this study, larger pull contact areas are used to simulate roof falls. The information obtained in this and similar studies can be used to better understand the loading behavior and surface control capability of roof screen in underground mines. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The large majority of ground-fall injuries are caused by falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Various controls are currently being used in mines to control this surface rock, including the use of wire roof screen. In mines where wire roof screen has been installed, injuries from rock falls have been reduced dramatically (Robertson and Hinshaw, 2001). Roof screen has the potential to prevent hundreds of injuries caused by the fall of small rocks between permanent roof supports (Compton et al., 2007). Because of this potential for reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is evaluating the performance characteristics of welded-wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program in the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in NIOSH’s Bruceton Research Center Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. Previous tests to evaluate the performance characteristics of various types of screen have been conducted by the University of Alberta (Tannant, 2001). In this study, the load-displacement properties of welded-wire, chain-link, and expanded-metal mesh were measured by performing full-scale pull tests. A flat steel plate was pulled through a screen test sample that was bolted to a special test frame while the pulling force and mesh displacement were measured. These tests established the general load-displacement behavior of the screen. Peak load capacities and stiffness were determined for each screen type, showing how welded-wire mesh has a much stiffer initial loading response, whereas chain-link and expanded-metal mesh have large displacement capabilities and exhibit significant post-peak ductility.

The inhalation of dust has been a problem in the mining industry since antiquity. Crystalline silica is now known to be the cause of silicosis, a form of pneumoconiosis that is associated with excessive exposure to respirable particles in some mining and industrial environments. Crystalline silica was reviewed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 1986 and classified as a Group 2A, Probably Carcinogenic to Humans in Volume 42 and Supplement 7 of the IARC Monographs (1987). In 1996, IARC reviewed additional literature and studies published in the intervening decade and recommended that quartz and cristobalite, two polymorphs of crystalline silica, be listed as Group 1, Carcinogenic to Humans. Their recommendations and reclassification were published in 1997 in IARC Monographs 68.[2] In both Monographs, IARC classified amorphous silicas as Group 3, Inadequate Evidence for Carcinogenicity to Humans.

In 1968 three historical rockbursts had occurred at Bibai Coal Mine in Hokkaido. At the time they had been observed by several seismic observatories as natural earthquakes away more than 100km from Bibai City. These facts taught us that the occuerrence of failure yielded in underground opening that was accompanied with seismic wave could be observed by seismometer on the surface. After two years from this desaster, the study concerning to microseismic events generated from underground mining panels has been begun by researchers with heart-throb.

The 9th Line / 16th Ave tunnels are part of a $700 million expansion of the York Durham Sewage System, north of Toronto. The 15 km of tunnels presented many challenges, including glacial and postglacial deposits, at depths up to 55 m. Due to high hydrostatic heads, the Owner specified EPB tunnelling, however, an alternate was proposed utilising rib and lagging tunnels, combined with a de-watering scheme. State of the art technology was utilised with a new Lovat TBM, incorporating PLC control, soft start water-cooled motors and a head designed to tackle the mixed ground expected. The 9th Line tunnels were completed in 2002. Subsequently the second section of tunnel along 16th Avenue has been awarded to the Joint Venture. This paper presents a case history of the soft ground tunnelling, including design elements, tunnel systems and TBM operations.

The North Shore 9 Collector System comprised an integral part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District's Water Pollution Abatement Program. The project required the construction of 1,490 m of tunnel, ranging from 1.5 m to 4.6 m in diameter along three separate alignments beneath arterial streets traversing Milwaukee's central business and cultural districts. This paper details the various aspects of the tunnel drives which were accomplished using two Lovat EPB type TBMs in conjunction with pipe-jacking procedures. Shaft configurations developed for the project, including ancillary subsidence mitigation components and portal pressurization facilities are discussed. Anomalies in observed soil behavior at variance with the parameters delineated in the project's geotechnical report are addressed.

The final 1995 figures on industrial sand and gravel have not yet been compiled by the US Geological Survey (USGS). There is usually about a nine-month lag time in receiving and compiling this information. However, USGS estimates that domestic production of industrial sand and gravel will increase about 4% to 28.2 Mt(31 million st). The average unit price is expected to increase as well. The top five producers during 1995 were Unimin, US Silica, Fairmount Minerals, Oglebay Norton and Morie Co. Glass manufacturing for containers, automobiles and buildings was mixed during 1995. Containers, the largest consumer of silica sand, remained steady, with regional increases. However, silica use in glass containers face increased competition from plastic and recycled glass (cullet). It was reported that the Pepsi Cola announced plans to replace glass containers with plastic during 1996.

As a result of the Three Mile Accident and because of evidence indicating radiation protection problems, the U.S Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) undertook a major effort, with the assistance of the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL), to analyze radiation protection programs at 47 commercially operated nuclear power plants. This effort, the health physics appraisal program (HPAP), using a modified management oversite and risk tree analytical logic methodology (MORT) which consisted of analytical trees with applicable questions for each tree, was subsequently extended to include USNRC licensed uranium mills. In the uranium mill appraisal, a team of four senior radiation safety professionals spent a week at each mill evaluating the total health physics program. Prior to the HPAP, the USNRC inspection efforts were designed to determine if the licensees were fulfilling the requirements of the code of federal regulations and the mills source material license. The HPAP, however, was designed and structured to facilitate an integrated look at the total program. It is also directed into areas for which explicit NRC regulatory requirements may not currently exist. The latitude of the HPAP was designed to allow professional judgement in the evaluation of program adequacy, because merely meeting the explicit regulatory requirements does not necessarily ensure an adequate and effective health physics program. The results of the first eight site visits and the generic health physics problems identified within the uranium milling industry will be identified in this paper.

Open-pit mines in the US and throughout the world are typically characterized by increasing operating costs and decreasing ore grades. Thus, companies must continue to improve their use of human and technological resources to remain competitive in the marketplace. Duval Corp. has historically been very sensitive to mining costs, in part because of relatively low grade copper-molybdenum ore bodies. These concerns have resulted in three haulage system generations at the 218 kt/d (240,000 stpd) Sierrita-Esperanza open-pit mine south of Tucson, AZ. Each generation has exceeded the performance of the one replaced. The latest system of portable crushers and conveyors reduces hauling costs by combining both hardware and technique. Savings are achieved not only bysubstituting conveyors for haul trucks, but also by permitting the crusher-convey or system to closely follow mining as the pit deepens and/or mining areas change location. The Duval system is capable of easy and inexpensive relocation in varying site configurations in relatively short time periods. Its implementation in active mining areas results in minimum disruption to both the mine operation and mine design. This haulage concept allows the mining engineer maximum freedom to design an open pit for profit rather than for equipment. Maximum savings with a portable system are achieved by minimizing truck haulage costs. At Sierrita, for example, the yearly estimated operating cost savings for each thousand feet of +10% truck ramp replaced by conveyors is about $1 million per portable crusher. A savings of $30 million could be achieved fora three-portable system overa 10 year period simply by reducing the average truck Iiftto the crusher by 30 m (100 ft), There is also the added capital expense of buying trucks to cover the additional 30 m (100 ft) of lift. Relocation costs are an important consideration in a portable system. Direct costs can become a significant operating expense if frequent relocations are necessary to take full advantage of potential haulage cost savings. A site preparation cost of $375,000, for example, would add an additional operating cost of 2.8¢/t(2.5¢/st) for a system handling 13.6 Mt/a (15 million stpy), assuming one move a year, In addition to the direct cost of site preparation, such as installation of retaining walls, apron feeder slots, and equipment pads, there is the cost of site renovation after abandonment. Indirect relocation costs, while less tangible and more dependent on specific mine design and scheduling, can be of significance. A slowdown in the mining rate or a less efficient mining plan can result from a site not being immediately available for mining after abandonment. Conversely, mining in narrow areas can be adversely affected if two or three month lead times are required for site preparation.

"An industrial waste liquor having high sulfate concentrations was subjected to biological treatment using the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) Desulfovibrio desulfuricans. Toxicity levels of different sulfate, cobalt and nickel concentrations toward growth of the SRB with respect to biological sulfate reduction kinetics was initially established. Optimum sulfate concentration to promote SRB growth amounted to 0.8 - 1 g/L. The strain of D. desulfuricans used in this study initially tolerated up to 4 -5 g/L of sulfate or 50 mg/L of cobalt and nickel, while its tolerance could be further enhanced through adaptation by serial subculturing in the presence of increasing concentrations of sulfate, cobalt and nickel. From the waste liquor, more than 70% of sulfate and 95% of cobalt and nickel could be precipitated as sulfides, using a preadapted strain of D. desulfuricans. Probable mechanisms involving biological sulfide precipitation and metal adsorption onto precipitates and bacterial cells are discussed.IntroductionIndustrial effluents from hydrometallurgical and mineral processing operations often contain high sulfate and metal concentrations posing significant disposal problems, which require urgent solution to avoid serious environmental contamination. In such waste liquors, sulfate and heavy metals such as cobalt, nickel, zinc and iron originate from the chemical or biological oxidation of exposed sulfide minerals. Reduction of sulfate and precipitation of toxic metal ions from industrial wastes is essential from the viewpoint of environmentally acceptable waste disposal and recovery of associated strategic metals.Many of these heavy metals are essential for metabolic activity of bacterial cells at low levels. But they exert toxic effects at concentrations encountered in polluted water. Removal of toxic metals through biological reduction of sulfates from industrial waste waters have been practiced for several decades. Metal remediation through common physicochemical techniques such as oxidation-reduction, chemical precipitation, filtration, electrochemical treatment, evaporation, ion exchange and reverse osmosis processes is expensive and not suitable in the case of voluminous effluents containing complexing organic matter and low metal concentrations. Further, strong and contaminating reagents are used for desorption, resulting in toxic sludge and secondary environmental pollution. Biotechnological approaches can be more efficient and cost effective for detoxification of such effluents. Biotreatment/ bioremoval offers several advantages over conventional chemical and physical treatment technologies, especially for diluted and mixed contaminants. Biological detoxification, which involves the use of microbes to detoxify and degrade environmental contaminants, has received increasing attention in recent years (Iwamoto and Nasu, 2001). In addition, valuable metals can be recovered from metal sulfide sludge (Boonstra et al., 1999)."

Fouling is an extremely complex phenomenon. From a fundamental point of view, it may be characterized as a combined momentum, heat, and mass transfer problem. Chemical reaction kinetics is involved, as well as the solubility characteristics of salts in water and corrosion technology. It is a routine practice to over size pumps, piping and heat exchangers to compensate for fouling.

The rare magnesium-lithium clay mineral hectorite occurs at many places in the McDermitt caldera of Nevada-Oregon. Commercial development of several high purity deposits began in 1986. The hectorite was precipitated in a lake environment formed after collapse of the McDermitt caldera. Hectorite beds and lenses are associated with volcaniclastic sediments, limestones, dolomites, zeolites and locally sandy bentonites. The high purity deposits appear to be associated with hydrothermal areas. The hectorite consists of extremely small flake-shaped crystals, and Ca is the predominant exchangeable ion. Its color ranges from white to light green. Commercial uses developed to date include high brightness magnesium aluminum silicate products, organophilic clays, pulp retention, and ceramics. The MAS is used as a suspending agent, binder, stabilizer and thixotrope in aqueous solutions for cosmetics, household cleaners, pharmaceuticals and miscellaneous industrial applications. Organoclays are used in printing inks and paints.

This chapter on the square-set system of mining em¬bodies the results of a special study of the subject made as a part of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) general investigation of mining methods and costs. Data for the chapter were gathered by the authors during visits to mines using square-set mining, from information circu¬lars prepared by consulting engineers to the USBM on mining methods at individual mines, and from articles in the technical press and the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Al¬though some of the properties discussed are no longer in operation, the methods described are still valid. The square-set system of mining has been very widely applied and is one of the oldest methods in use in the US. It is mainly employed for extracting rela¬tively high-grade ore in heavy ground. It is also useful in taking out pillars left in mining by other methods. It is used to some extent as an auxiliary method with many underground systems and as an alternate with cut-and¬fill, shrinkage, and open-stope methods when heavy ground is encountered. In some cases as much as 50% of the ore may be extracted by square setting at mines listed as using some other method of mining. A large tonnage has been mined yearly by square setting, prin¬cipally in the western states. Due to the high cost of timber and the relatively low average production per manshift, this system generally is not used when the ore can be mined by some other method; it usually is adopted as a last resort. Square setting, however, has a special field in that ore bodies not minable by other methods can be stoped by this system. As square-set mining was widely known, there was a tendency for years to use the method regardless of its suitability. With the increasing need for economy and the development of other methods, square setting has been superseded in many mines by cut-and-fill, top slic¬ing, or sublevel caving methods. The term square-set mining as used in this chapter includes all stoping methods in which the space made by the removal of the ore is timbered with framed sets. The sets usually are square in horizontal section. The stope may or may not be filled with waste rock as stoping progresses. HISTORY OF THE SQUARE-SET SYSTEM Prior to 1860, open-stope methods with stulls for casual support accounted for most of the mineral pro¬duction from underground mines. Attempts to mine large ore bodies that required artificial support resulted in disastrous cave-ins and loss of life. The art of mining received a tremendous impetus following the introduc¬tion of methods for mining the bonanza ore body which was discovered in 1860 in the Ophir mine on the Comstock lode, Virginia City, NV. This ore body was phe¬nomenally rich and eventually proved to be 122 m (400 ft) high, 27 m (90 ft) wide, and 98 m (320 ft) long. The mining of this large high-grade ore body taxed the best engineering talent of the time; the problem was finally solved by Philip Deidesheimer. According to Eliot Lord (1882): "At the 50-foot level the vein of black sulphurets was only 3 or 4 feet thick, and could be readily extracted through a drift along its line, propping up the walls and roof when necessary by simple uprights and cap-posts. As the ledge descended the sulphuret vein grew broader until, at the depth of 175 feet, it was 65 feet in width, and the miners were at a loss how to proceed, for the ore was so soft and crumbling that pillars could not be used to support the roof as in coal mines. They spliced timbers together to hold up the caving ground; but these jointed props were too weak and ill-supported to with¬stand the pressure upon them, and were constantly broken and thrown out of place. The dilemma was a curious one. Surrounded by riches, they were yet un¬able to carry them off and their mass of black sulphurets bade fair to become a white elephant on their hands. The Ophir Company began to wish themselves less for¬tunate, as their miners narrowly escaped burial day after day in their attempts to stope out the ore. "A young mining engineer, Philip Deidesheimer, was in charge of a quartz mine in Georgetown, El Dorado County, Calif., in the autumn of 1860, when this serious check to the development of the lode occurred. At the request of William F. Babcock, a trustee of the Ophir Company, Mr. Deidesheimer left his California mine and crossed the mountains with a letter from the direc¬tors of the Ophir Company, authorizing him to inspect the workings of their mines and make such changes in the method of timbering as should seem to him expe¬dient. After examining the vein he designed, in the course of a few weeks, a system of timbering which proved to be exactly adapted to the requirements of the work. Experiments which he had previously made in California gravel and quartz mines furnished the out¬line of his plan. This was to frame timbers together in rectangular sets, each set being composed of a square base, placed horizontally, formed of four timbers, sills, and crosspieces from 4 to 6 feet long, surmounted at the corners by four posts from 6 to 7 feet high, and capped by a framework similar to the base. The cap pieces forming the top of any set were at the same time the sills or base of the next set above. These sets could readily be extended to any required height and over any given area, forming a series of horizontal floors, built up from the bottom sets like the successive stories of a house. The spaces between the timbers were filled with waste rock or with wooden braces, forming a solid cube when¬ever the maximum degree of firmness was desired. By adjustments of these sets the ore bodies along the line of the lode were extracted with comparative ease and security." Shallow underground voids resulting from early coal mining and other resource recovery activities over the past several decades are now being recognized as a significant cause of ground subsidence problems. Uncertain knowledge of abandoned coal mines also imposes potential hazards in current mining operations since water inundation or the release of methane gas is a serious hazard when mine excavation operations break into an abandoned mine. Requirements for detecting and mapping subversive man-made tunnels in previous work has led to the development of a surface- operated automatic earth resistivity survey system and associated computer data processing system for military applications. Field demonstration tests of this system have resulted in successful detection of tunnels at depth-to- diameter ratios greater than ten to one. Under the sponsorship of the Bureau of Mines, a similar high-resolution earth resistivity system was designed and constructed for use as a potential means of detecting coal mine workings. The hardware and software aspects of the new system are described together with applications of the method to the survey and mapping of abandoned coal mine workings. Field tests are presented showing the detection of both air-filled and water-filled mine workings.

Gold Quarry is a sediment-hosted, epithermal disseminated gold deposit located along the Carlin Trend. Gold, hosted by allochthonous Ordovician siltstones and cherts, is localized at the intersection of structures sympathetic to the major Good Hope and Gold Quarry faults. The magnitude of Gold Quarry was discovered in 1979 by surface exploration and by percussion holes drilled near the Maggie Creek orebody. Four years of development drilling delineated an open pit mineable gold deposit that contains 130 Mt (144 million st) of ore at an average 1.68 g/t (0.049 oz per st) of gold and includes a high-grade core of 46 Mt (51 million st) that average 2.64 g/t (0.077 oz per st) gold. Milling of the higher-grade portion began in 1985.

The two types of dryers used in the drying of copper concentrates are the rotary dryer and the spray dryer. The rotary dryer has until recent history been the traditional drying method used, Although spray dryers have been used in the chemical field for many years it is only recently that they have been accepted for drying of copper concentrates. The comparison made here will apply in a narrower sense to the drying of copper concentrates as fed into the reverbatory furnaces of the Smelter. To compare a rotary dryer and a spray dryer, which are two totally different methods and pieces of equipment, it is best to view them as systems each made up of certain elements

Coca Mines Inc. is a medium sized company exploring for and developing precious metal properties in the Western United States. Factors which cause thiourea consumption in gold-leaching systems include adsorption by gangue mineral particles, complexation with base metal ions, thermal degradation, and oxidation by air/ferric iron. Of these factors oxidation by ferric iron is the most significant factor. Of course, ferric sulfate is desired as an oxidant for the gold leaching reaction, but an excess of ferric sulfate leads to high thiourea consumption. In this regard, the rate of gold leaching by thiourea must be balanced against the rate of thiourea decomposition. It is important to note that the thiourea decomposition reaction in ferric sulfate solution is relatively slow in pure solutions and has been found to be first order with respect to both thiourea concentration and total ferric iron concentration. However, when mineral particles from gold-bearing ores or concentrates are present, the decomposition rate can become quite significant. As might be expected, the catalytic activity of mineral surfaces varies with particle composition and size. Experimental results are discussed with respect to the consumption of thiourea.

Barometric pressure changes affect air density, leading to change in the mass of the gas in the gob. When the barometric pressure decreases, the volume of gas in the gob expands, while the volume of gas contracts when the barometric pressure increases, a process which causes the gob to “breathe” out and in. Although the concept of gob “breathing” is simple, its effect on spontaneous heating of coal in the gob area is not clear. In this study, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations were conducted to model the spontaneous heating of coal in the longwall gob area under measured barometric pressure changes. A single longwall panel using a bleederless ventilation system was simulated. If there is no barometric pressure change, the intake airflow rate is equal to the return airflow rate. When the barometric pressure changes, these two airflow rates are no longer equal, and the difference between the two airflow rates represents the airflow rate the gob breathes in and out. The effect of inflow and outflow of gas on the potential spontaneous heating in the gob was investigated using the CFD model developed in our previous study. The effect of barometric pressure changes on the spontaneous heating was found to be dependent on the gob permeability and the coal oxidation rate. The effect of barometric pressure changes on oxygen concentrations in the gob was also examined.

Due to the increases available base of scientific knowledge, increased independent review required by worldwide security exchanges, and the need for accuracy in characterizing mine water resources, it has become necessary to produce a more accurate hydrologic balance. This presentation provides a critical review of the steps and tools to compile a complete hydrologic review of a mine property. The forces of regulation, increased scientific analysis, better tools, and stakeholder expectations have created a perfect storm of accuracy demand. Ausenco has developed protocol to achieve the desired end.
