The Indentation Fracture technique is being developed as a tool for use in comminution and mineral liberation analysis. Fracture toughness measurements for a number of mineralogical materials were made and comparisons were drawn between these and properties measured with the Ultrafast Load Cell drop weight apparatus. The technique has also been used as a probe to quantify differences in fracture properties at different areas in the microstructure of a material. In both a Utah limestone and a South African quartzite, material near a grain boundary fractures very differently to that in the bulk. Ongoing work is ultimately aimed at producing a comprehensive fracture model for a multi-mineral system based on its micro-fracture characteristics.

As part of a larger study to identify factors influencing the practical operating life of wire rope used on large draglines in surface coal mining, field trips to operating surface coal mines were made during late 1975. Wire rope performance information was obtained from personnel at thirteen mine sites west of the Appalachians. Seventeen pieces of equipment, utilizing buckets ranging from 30-to 220-cubic-yard capacity, were documented. We have judged that U.S. surface coal mining draglines, 30 yards and larger, can be represented as 120 machines having 60-cubic-yard buckets, moving 1.8 x 10 yards of overburden during 6,650 hours of productive availability per year. Based on our limited field study, we have calculated that downtime resulting from rope-related causes averages 105.6 hours per year for each (typical 60-yard) dragline. The total lost production from this source alone is thereby estimated at about 25 x 10 yards annually. Although study findings did not reveal anything about dragline rope life that wasn't known or practiced by one operator or another, most operators could expect improved rope life by periodic review of their practices and by adopting or adapting one or more life-improvement measures employed at other sites. Since rope productivity was found to vary by about five to one, among the sites studied, we believe considerably improved average performance is possible. As little as ten percent overall improvement would mean increased national productivity exceeding two million yards of solid overburden removal, and associated savings in rope costs alone of some two million dollars annually, not to mention any reduction of labor-related expenses. This report outlines preliminary findings which may prove useful to many operators in extending wire rope life, thereby lowering expenses and increasing surface coal mining productivity. Pennsylvania Power & Light Company is an investor-owned public utility which was incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on June 4, 1920, with general offices at 901 Hamilton Street, Allentown, Pennsylvania. At the present time PP&L is operating five coal-fired steam electric stations, two hydroelectric stations and one steam heat plant which is being converted from anthracite to oil fired. In addition, PP&L is a partner in both the Keystone and Conemaugh mine mouth bituminous coal-fired steam electric stations in Central Pennsylvania and also part owner of a company which operates another hydroelectric station. PP&L plants, other than the two mine mouth stations, are located in Central Eastern Pennsylvania. (Figure 1) The company derives about 99% of its operating revenues from supplying electric service, while the balance is from the one steam heat plant serving the city of Harrisburg. The entire service area covering 10,000 square miles in 29 counties, has a population of approximately 2,300,000 people. The area served is mostly suburban. It includes 109 communities each having a population in excess of 5,000 people. The largest cities served are Allentown, Bethlehem, Harrisburg, Hazleton, Lancaster, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Williamsport which range from 50,000 - 120,000 in population. So you see our service area does not include any major cities. The area has industrial, commercial, residential, agricultural and recreational activities that are linked with the Eastern Megalopolis by an extensive interstate limited-access highway system and railroad networks. We consider this Central Eastern Pennsylvania area we serve as the "heart of the market" -- an area with great growth potential.

The Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) Combined Sewer Overflow Abatement Program is a major effort to address and mitigate discharges from combined sewer overflows in the Providence, Rhode Island area. The proposed system consists of three deep rock tunnel segments totaling 17.8 km (11.1 miles) in length that will provide 860,000 cu m (227 million gal) of storage at depths up to 99m (325 ft). This paper discusses 13.5 km (8.4 miles) of 6.64m (21.8 ft) finished diameter tunnel, four construction shafts, 19 dropshafts and one large diameter pump station shaft tapered from 1 5.2m (50 ft) at the surface to 27.4m (90 ft) at depth. All facilities are in preliminary design.

As the total cost of labor has significantly increased over the past ten years, older underground mines have found it more difficult to compete- in a limited demand coal market. Many of the older mines were developed extensively into a reserve requiring a large number of workers to maintain and rehabilitate extensive track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, a large number of fans were required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. This paper focuses upon problems which beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability.

Lupin is located on the shores of Contwoyto Lake at lat. 65° 48'N, Long. 111° 15'W and lies about 80 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. Since start up in 1982 the mine has produced over 2.15 million ounces of gold from 6.66 million tonnes of ore grading 10.63 gm/tonne. Total remaining reserves at 1993 year end were 5.1 million tonnes at a grade of 9.11 gm/tonne (1.65 million ounces). This is sufficient for 7 -8 years at the present annual production rate of about 200,000 ounces. The Centre and West Zones of the deposit are open to depth. The deposit is in an Archean metaturbidite sequence of the Contwoyto Formation, which has been mapped as part of the Yellowknife Supergroup of supracrustal metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks making up part of the Slave Geologic Province. These rocks have been subjected to regionar and contact metamorphism and to several phases of deformation. Six stages of Archean plutonism have been identified and all Archean rocks have been cut by Proterozoic diabase dyke swarms. Gold mineralization in the Lupin deposit is commonly fine grained and associated with pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite in amphibolitic banded iron formation. The gold-bearing portions of the host iron formations are characterized by the presence of multiple quartz veins and the pervasive replacement of grunerite by hornblende. In sparsely mineralized portions of the host iron formation, zoning of sulfides about quartz veins is clearly seen with the arsenopyrite halo being more restricted around the veins than the pyrrhotite halo. In well mineralized portions, quartz vein densities approach one vein per metre along strike. In these areas pyrrhotite distribution in the iron formation is more pervasive and the rock takes on the appearance of a banded sulphide rock.

To optimize ore quality, throughput, transport logistics scheduling and delivery to contract, planning teams need to model and manage the value chain accurately and achieve a consolidated, enterprise view of operational performance. Planning teams coordinate a complex series of activities to ensure production forecast accuracy. They also negotiate and execute complex contracts often with disconnected and limited visibility of production forecasts, quality, and variability with little ability to accurately market potential product specifications over longer time horizons. This market is becoming increasingly dynamic, with increasing variability and the time for planning teams to react is decreasing. This is driving the need towards using science to generate the necessary scenarios required to support the decisions made by planners on a frequent basis. Resource-to-Market is a highly flexible, user-configurable supply chain management system for the mining and metal processing industries. As part of its program to minimize mineral and metal needs, the Federal Bureau of Mines conducted investigations to determine the feasibility of producing foundry-sand-grade olivine concentrates from low-grade sources. Using a Bureau-patented attrition-grinding technique, concentrates meeting Steel Founder's Society of America (SFSA) specifications for loss on ignition (LOI) were prepared. Studies showed that green strengths and tensile strengths of the attrition-ground olivine were equivalent or superior to those of commercial materials. Metal-casting studies showed that molds of attrition-ground olivine produced better surface finishes. The improved surface finishes were attributed in part to increased grain sphericity.

Uranium is a very mobile element geochemically and is widely dispersed in the lithosphere and hydrosphere. Under oxidizing conditions, it is particularly widespread and appears in all parts of the surface hydrologic system. As a result, this system is a leading candidate in uranium-resource assessments as a new base from which total resources might be estimated. No other sampling system provides the large volume geochemical capture as the continental hydrosphere and is as pervasive and non-selective regardless of rock type. However, the water system as a uranium metal sampler is not without drawbacks as the development of a National sampling program based on it has shown, In spring 1973, the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) was announced by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). The program was conceived to provide an evaluation of the domestic uranium resources and to identify areas favorable for uranium exploration. The specific NURE objectives are as follows (Bowyer, 1974): 1. To provide a preliminary evaluation of domestic resources and favorable exploration areas by early 1976, based on existing data. 2. To conduct a comprehensive evaluation of domestic resources and favorable areas by 1980, based on advanced state-of-the-art information. 3. To conduct an R&D program into new and improved procedures, equipment, and technology for uranium exploration and assessment. 4. To disseminate information on new exploration concepts and technology.

So far my consulting in industrial minerals has been confined principally to carbonate rocks,-salt, coking coal, and glass sand. Much of this work has been for companies either too small for a full-time geological staff or unaware of the value of employing one or more qualified geologists permanently. It gave me considerable personal satisfaction to see several of the latter companies employ one or two full-time geologists after the completion of a consulting contract with them. One possible reason why some companies lack the wisdom to hire geologists is that they are dominated by engineers who still subscribe to the old idea that engineers are self-sufficient in all fields. They could have learned this from their professors. I once knew a Dean of Engineering who got purple in the face when a faculty committee was discussing the financing of a broad gauged engineering project and suggestions were made that assistance be obtained from the Schools of Business and Law and from some of the science departments tie pounded the table and shouted "Engineers are trained to handle all this!" In teaching engineering geology some years ago I used to tell the class repeatedly that the course would not make them geologists, that the purpose was to teach them

The Coteau Properties Company's Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mining operation located near Beulah, North Dakota. As part of the mining process, Coteau removes and replaces thin layers of suitable plant growth material (SPGM) generally ranging in thickness between one and five feet. Historically, tractor-scrapers completed this work; however, rising tractor-scraper costs and increasing haulage distances sent Coteau in search of a lower cost method resulting in the acquisition of a backhoe/truck fleet in 1995.

The Sunro Copper Mine is near the south coast of Vancouver Island about 35 miles west of Victoria. Failure of the roof of a large open stope let a good sized mountain stream into the mine. Broken are, boulders and sand were washed into the underground mill and out through a 7 800-foot adit. The adit became plugged; water burst out an a ridge above the adit, washing out the portal and o trestle by which it was reached, Rock and ore are strong but several systems of steep, pronounced but generally tight fractures are found on and parallel to the walls of the orebody. The stope was started from a slusher drift 390 feet below the bed of the River and brought up to an elevation 155 feet below the River by blasting vertical and horizontal rings of longholes in the nearly vertical orebody. Mining was stopped there and five months were given to grouting and bolting the pillar under the bed of the River, During this time and for several months thereafter sloughing increased the width, length and height of the stope. At the last known observation the stope was 77 to 96 feet wide, 185 feet long and the highest point of the domed back was only 55 feet below the River. The flooding took no lives. In other respects, however, it might be difficult to find in mining lore o more savage example of the application of "Murphy's Laws".

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from primary mineral and metal production account for ~10% of global GHG emissions. One of the main sources of GHG emissions in mining operations is fuel consumption by haul trucks. Given their size and carrying capacity, the fuel consumption of haul trucks can approach 250 liters per hour. An average of 30% of the idle time of the trucks is spent while waiting in the queue. Inefficient truck dispatch planning can waste resources, cause dilution and elevate GHG emissions. In this research, a machine learning based truck dispatch approach was developed to dynamically route the haul trucks based on the loaded material, the road traffic, the estimated wait time, and the maintenance needs of the trucks. The GHG reduction potential of this smart fleet management approach was estimated by calculating and comparing the related carbon emissions versus scenarios using traditional fleet allocation approaches. Results suggest that this dynamic fleet allocation approach can significantly reduce GHG emissions at mineral production sites by optimizing waiting times and the overall distance travelled while achieving the same production levels.

Downtown Bellevue Tunnel (DBT) is part of Sound Transit’s $3.7 billion, 14-mile light rail transit system from downtown Seattle, across Lake Washington, to the cities of Mercer Island, Bellevue, and Redmond. The tunnel was the first Sound Transit East Link project and posed significant construction risk. This paper discusses implementation of design changes to the soft ground tunneling method, implementation of several technologies such as the use macro-synthetic fiber initial shotcrete lining, use of spray-applied waterproofing, and use of shotcrete for the final tunnel lining. These efforts allowed for significant time and cost savings to the project.

INTRODUCTION Today at LKAB, the primary mining method used is sublevel caving, independent of ore-body size, shape, dip, and geographical location. The mining of small ore bodies with relatively flat dip involves a lot of develop¬ment work, a large initial investment, big dilution, and large ore losses. In 1975 serious investigations into other possible methods, especially for those small ore bodies which do not lie in direct contact with other ore bodies, began. Different methods were studied and a number of in¬teresting ideas came from Russian mines. An analysis was made of one of the proposed methods, sublevel benching, in which mining is carried out from raises, and which uses the throw from the blast to place the broken ore. However, there were reservations about working in big open rooms at great depth, and doubts about the possibility of getting acceptable drilling results in an acceptable environment from raised platforms. Testing was therefore delayed for a time. However the investigations continued and in the fall of 1976, it was decided to try vein mining in a small ore body (Indian) (see Figs. 1 and 2). MINING RESULTS The results are now available from the mining of Indian and are as follows: Ore plan area 1200 m2 Level height 50 m Ore volume 60 000 m3 Ore tonnage 270 000 t Iron content 62% Dip 0.69 rad (40°) Ore thickness 14 m Ore compressive strength 26 MPa Ore C-factor (fracture density) 0.21 Hanging wall compressive strength 28 MPa Hanging wall C-factor 0.27 About 40 000 m of the holes were drilled by ring drills with an average productivity of 85 m/shift; loading of a round (2 rows, 750 m of hole) was usually accomplished in one shift. The total ore recovery was about 270 000 t with an average iron content of 59%, and three to four shifts were required per round (4700 t) to load. The principal of "throwing" the rock during blast¬ing worked well, and no ore remains on the footwall. ROCK CONTROL Before mining commenced at Indian, it was dis¬covered that the rock strength in its vicinity was rela¬tively poor. Since the ore is flatly dipping, and mining was to take place with open rooms, the strength of the hanging wall was of great importance. A supplementary program of exploration drilling was done during the fall of 1976 in order to assess fracture spacing and rock strength from the drill cores. Results showed that the strength of the hanging wall was low because of the many fractures. A decision was made to try cable bolting of the hanging wall by extending some of the ordinary blast¬holes. Cables (20 mm diam) were grouted in these larger holes and the rest of the hole was then utilized for ordinary loading (see Fig. 2). About 100 bolts altogether were installed and, to date, only small falls have occurred and the hanging wall is holding. Its exposed area is 2100 m2 DEVELOPMENT WORK On the 350-m level, four crosscuts (two per mining room), one longitudinal drift, and two elongated drifts (one per raise) for the raise climber were developed as shown in Fig. 1. Of the 230 m of drift, 60 m were in ore and the rest in waste. For mining room A alone, a total of 115 m of drift were needed with 30 m in ore. The drift dimensions were about 4.5 X 5.5 m. In the drifting on the 300-m level, two connecting drifts were driven from one existing transport drift forward to the respective raises. The total development was 93 m, all in waste (Fig. 1). The two raises having a length of 80 m each were driven at an angle of 0.68 rad (39°) from the hori¬zontal. They were driven along the footwall contact with a separation of 30 m and had an area of 10 m2. LONG-HOLE DRILLING The drilling of long holes with the ring drilling unit began in the fall of 1977 in raise A. The equipment consisted of an Alimak raise climber, equipped with a lower platform from which the charging was done.

A systematic, balanced and inclusive formulation of the vast input data for mine design is presented. Since the quality of this statement severely influences subsquent design it is extremely important to senior mining engineers and the profession-at-large. If unfocussed, chaos can result along with serious ommisions. The basic categories, each a traditional one are: 1) Natural Conditions (geology and geography), 2) Company Capabilities (monetary and managerial), 3) Public Domain (regulations, contracts, good will, etc.) and 4) State of Art (mining engineering professionalism). To further reduce the data additional organizing principles were used: the distinctions of mining (vs. civil) engineering, proceeding from the general to particular, the basic engineering dimensions, and separating dependent from independent variables. The results are a unique and unified corpus, which anticipates the mine design procedure.

Indicator simulation allows specification of different continuity of high and low values through the use of grade thresholds. The sequential implementation of indicator simulation has been widely used, but the problem of order relation deviations remains a significant drawback. A new procedure for "Hierarchical Indicator Simulation" is introduced that avoids order relations and offers greater flexibility than the conventional sequential approach. The new implementation simulates all locations at the largest threshold and then considers decreasing thresholds in turn. All nodes with grades that are above the previous threshold are excluded from the domain of the current threshold and therefore, they are not used as conditioning data. The probability of being above or below the threshold is calculated using simple indicator kriging using all conditioning data in the domain, thus the covariance structure is preserved. The theoretical framework of this new approach is fully developed. Practical implementation details are discussed. Application to a copper deposit shows the advantages and drawbacks of the method. Finally, the possibility of incorporating multiple-point statistics is discussed.

"A comprehensive analysis of the effect of OH- on various cations in hydrometallurgical systems has been investigated. Cations chosen for this analysis included groups 1A and 2A, rare-earth elements and other common transition metal ions such as Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Ag+, Cd2+, U4+, UO2 2+, Hg2+, Al3+ and Zn2+. The Newton-Raphson technique was used to calculate and plot various metal species over a wide range of pH. This study has clearly shown that by adjusting the concentration of OH-, the separation of Fe from Mn, U from V, Ce and Eu from other rare-earth elements, and In from Sn is possible. The effects of hydrated metal ions on the separation and removal of various metals from each other under various conditions is discussed.IntroductionThe primary purpose of hydrometallurgical processing is to extract, remove and purify various metals from diverse sources. Hydrometallurgists are frequently preoccupied by the extraction of cations in metallic form, but overlook the important role anions play in such processes. A proper choice of anions can determine the fate of successful extraction, removal and purification of metals (Esmaeili et al., 2005; Brbooti et al., 2011; Wei et al., 2005; Jeppesen et al., 2005; Al-Tarazi et al., 2004), and also separation (Farha et al., 2011; Sevenich and Fritz, 1983; Rashid, 1974) of cations from various solutions.In this study, the authors have examined some of the effects that anions play in various solutions. The anion considered in this study was the first hydroxide, OH-. Other anions, such as Cl-, Br-, I-, and CN-, will be dealt with in the second part of the series of two papers."

Introduction One important class of manganiferrous ores is manganiferrous-silver ores. They occur in the oxidized portions of the silver deposits of the western United States. Silver is often associated with manganese oxides, which in some ore deposits are dispersed through calcite, causing the black color of the host rock, known as black calcite. Black calcites can occur in carbonate rocks (0.3 to 50 kg Ag/t) and in volcanic rocks (less than 30 g Ag/t). Silver mineralization associated with manganese oxides and black calcites can occur in veins (Hewett, 1968) or as disseminations (Graybeal, 1981). In the US, silver-bearing manganese veins are located in a broad arc that extends from southern Colorado to southwest New Mexico, southern Arizona, and southeast Califor¬nia (Hewett, 1964). Areas of disseminated silver-manganese mineralization include the Creede and Silver Cliff districts of Colorado and the Tombstone and Hardshell districts of Arizona (Graybeal, 1981). These deposits are also characterized by significant amounts of silver halides - cerargyrite (AgCl), bromargyrite (AgBr), and iodargyrite (AgI). Black calcites are also common in these deposits. Oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. In the past when these ores could not be smelted, they were treated generally by cyanidation at very low efficiency. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) studied the problem of treating silver-manganese ores in the early 1920s (Clevenger and Caron, 1925). It was found that the refractory silver in the original ore was insoluble in all the common solvents for metallic silver and its salts. The conclusion was that to obtain the highest recovery of silver, all the manganese had to be dissolved or the higher oxides of manganese reduced to manganous oxide. More recent results from treating refractory silver¬manganese ores were given by USBM (Scheiner et al., 1973). The silver ores from Candeleria District, NV, and Round Mountain District, CO, were investigated. Electrooxidation experiments recovered only 34% silver with minor amounts of manganese dissolved. Sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation revealed that silver extracted was proportional to the amount of SO2 used. A similar approach, using sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation, was also proposed by Rhoades et al. (1984). Hazen Research Inc. performed extensive testing on silver and manganese dissolutions from Ag-Mn ores obtained from the Candeleria and Round Mountain ore deposits. The methods examined were direct cyanidation, pretreatment with sulfurous acid followed by cyanidation, malonitrile leach, and leaching with ammonium hydroxide-sodium thiosulfate under slight oxygen pressure. The results were not satisfactory. The importance of the vast reserves of Ag-Mn ores and the lack of an efficient method to recover these metals warranted a search for new technologies. One novel method for extraction of these metals is treatment of Ag-Mn ores with acidified thiourea solutions. Preliminary results of the leaching of silver and manganese from Ag-Mn ores were very encouraging (Pesic, 1984a) ; thus, it was decided to examine the new lixiviant in more detail. Experimental Ore from the Round Mountain District was studied. It was crushed, ground, and dry sieved into monosized fractions in the range of 16 to +400 mesh. The ore composition was about 90 g Ag/t and 3% Mn, depending slightly on size. The leaching experiments were performed in apparatus described elsewhere (Pesic, 1982 and 1984b). All experiments were performed at constant temperature conditions. The leaching residues were analyzed for silver and manganese. By using physical and chemical method to increase the bulk density of newly mined coal, the productivity of a mine can be significantly increased. Greater amounts of coal can be placed in fixed volume shuttle car by increasing bulk density. This can increase mine productivity by about 15%. Small, easy to achieve changes in mining operations are required to obtain the increased productivity. This article deals with chemical methods used to increase coal bulk density, the results and discussion are based on experiments performed in the laboratory.
