The authors' company has recently undertaken a development programme aimed at exploring the relationships between the variables of greatest importance in the design of mixer-settlers for metallurgical solvent extraction applications. Such applications vary from relatively small scale plants treating copper mine waters, nickel containing effluents, etc., where the total flowrates may be of the order of a few hundreds of gallons per minute, to very large scale plants treating several thousands of gallons per minute of leach liquors containing copper, uranium or other metals. This paper outlines the physical and mechanical factors which must be taken into account when designing mixer-settler systems for large scam. solvent extraction plants. The performance of the equipment will also be dependent upon the chemistry of the system, including the kinetics and thermodynamics of the ion exchange reaction itself, the effect of impurities flocculants, surfactants, temperature, etc., but these will not be dealt with here. Much of the laboratory work has been carried out using copper containing solutions and either LIX 64* or LIX 64N* as the solvent dissolved in various grades of kerosene. For simplicity, all the graphs and tables of results which are presented and discussed here will refer to the LIX-copper system, although the conclusions will in many cases be generally applicable to other systems also. The LIX-copper process is now sufficiently well known to obviate the need for a full description, however, an outline flowsheet of the process is shown in Figure 1. The ultimate objective of a laboratory programme for a particular extraction application is to provide data upon which a mixer-settler system can be designed to handle a given throughput of leach liquor and extract from this liquor the maximum quantity of metal for the minimum cost. Mr. William. J. Montgomery in his book "Theory and Practice on Mine Ventilation stated "Ventilation is vitally important to underground mining for three reasons: First, it sweeps all workings with a plentiful supply of air and drives to the outside the smoke, gases, and contaminated air which would be injurious to the miners; second, it dilutes and renders harmless the explosive gases emitted from the strata, thus eliminating the dangerous conditions caused by the accumulation of these gases; third, it keeps the mine air as nearly as possible of the same composition as the outside air, thus giving to the miner the healthiest possible condition in which to work...." Specific methods to achieve the above basic reasons for mine ventilation were established in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Sections 303(y)(1); (y)(2), and Section 317(f)(4) of the Act, which can be broadly described as entrapment features, are controversial and debatable in the minds of many mining engineers in their intent and method for affecting, 303(y)(1) in certain cases prohibits the use of belt haulage entries as an intake for face ventilation, This is to say that air traveling in a belt entry will be placed into the returns and not used for face ventilation, 303(y)(2) limits the velocity of the air on trolley haulage entries. The regulations, as published in the Federal Register, have set this limit at 250 feet per minute unless a higher velocity is approved by the District Manager.

The principles of Ore Sorting in general and photometric sorting in particular are discussed with detailed reference to the Model 16 machine. The operating principles and design of the Model 16 are discussed and a case study presented to demonstrate the use of sorters to process an industrial mineral. In addition, an economic study is presented, to highlight the benefits of ore sorting, by evaluating the increased revenue that can be achieved using an ore sorter to process a particular ore body.

Using granular media for removal of soluble manganese from mine water and industry waste stream has the advantage of forming a compact surface layer of manganese oxide coating on the media. This process can avoid the step involving the separation of voluminous sludge of manganese hydroxide by the high-pH method for soluble manganese removal. The removal of soluble manganese is accomplished by adsorption and oxidation. The adsorption of Mn(II) on the manganese oxide-coated media was rapid through the specific adsorption and may be due to the ion exchange of hydroxyl ions on the manganese oxide by Mn(II). In the subsequent step, the adsorbed Mn(II) form the intermediate manganese complex on the manganese oxide product is oxidized with dissolved oxygen or other available oxidant source in the aqueous solution. This paper presents the efficiency of removal of soluble manganese from mine water by using a laboratory fluidized bed and the recovery of manganese oxide coating on the anthracite coal particles. In order to accelerate the formation of the manganese oxide layer on the surface of anthracite media, dilute potassium permanganate solution is used as an active oxidant. The effects of operation parameters on the manganese removal including pH, flow rate, concentration of feed and oxidant dosage are evaluated.

"Tunnel safety is evolving as science, engineering and technology make advances. Applicable safety codes and standards simply do not cover all the potentials of design, construction and operation. This paper reviews a series of tunnel projects code gaps in Seattle USA that were uncovered during the design and construction of a new highway tunnel, conversion of bus tunnels to combined road and rail tunnels, new rail tunnels using TBM and NATM, conversion of a road tunnel to light rail, and retrofit of an existing road tunnel to add lanes and improve safety systems. The perspectives of the ‘fire code official’ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) on methods to identify and resolve gaps in safety code and standard regulations, while garnering the consensus of the owner, designer, and contractors are presented. Additionally, the emergency responder command perspective on safe tunnel design, tunnel rescue during construction and operational safety is explained TUNNEL SAFETY EVOLUTION The underground has become nearly the only option to provide essential transportation corridors to continue our economic growth in key global areas. Tunnels are not built on a whim. Often significant portion of a regions wealth are invested to meet current, and hopefully future transportation demands. There are more transportation tunnels being built now than at any time in the planets history. The location of these tunnels is often selected for us based upon regional demand. Most commonly under densely populated urban centers and between populations’ centers to bypass geologic conditions like mountains and water bodies. Tunnels are being built in unforgiving soils, between tectonic plates, in extremes environmental conditions and often, under the very heart of the highest density population centers on the planet. All of these locations can bring with it conditions that challenge our common assumptions about safety. These extraordinary locations and soils create risks for both those constructing the tunnel, and in design engineering to meet the ‘minimum’ requirements at the lowest costs. There is lengthy history of above ground safety. Most countries and major local jurisdictions have adopted, or created safety requirements for the construction of above ground buildings. Through decades of use, these safety requirements have evolved, changed and been expanded to cover a wide gamut of actual and potential safety risks. However, the use of the underground for tunnel transportation corridors has grown exponentially with limited attention to safety requirements."

Due to inefficiencies of the flotation process, significant effort has been recently provided to develop gravity separators for treating ultrafine particles. As a result, several enhanced gravity concentrators have been developed and commercialized. The Altair Centrifugal Jig is an enhanced gravity separator that provides relatively efficient separations on +25 µm size fractions. An experimental program conducted on -600 µm coal found that the Altair Jig reduced the ash content of the 600 x 44 µm from about 30% to 10% with an 86% combustible recovery value. The pulse water pressure, feed volumetric rate and ragging volume were found to be the key operating parameters affecting the separation performances obtained from the process. An extremely low density cut point of 1.54 and an Ep value of 0.08 were indicative of the high process efficiency values achievable by the Altair jig.

Rock salt has been mined by the solution method for many years in many countries. Attempts have been made in the past in Canada and various other countries to produce potash by the' same method. However, only Kalium Chemicals Limited (1) has been successful, possibly because the conditions in Saskatchewan are the most favorable conditions to be found so far for the development of a solution mining method for potash. There are significant differences in solution mining of rock salt and solution mining of potash. First, rock salt deposits are relatively pure in respect to soluble minerals, whereas potash is never found in the pure state and contains Substantial amounts of other soluble minerals, particularly rock salt. In comparison to rock salt, much less potash is dissolved and brought to the surface for the same amount of water circulated through the orebody. The amount of water to be evaporated per unit weight of product is a major difference. Much greater amounts of water must be evaporated when producing potash and the treatment of the brine is more complicated because other dissolved salts have to be separated. Secondly, the rock salt deposits, particularly the domes, are much thicker. Bed thickness is of prime importance because it determines the yield of a well and consequently the economics of the process. Furthermore, as rock salt provides a strong roof structure, larger cavities can be developed and this prolongs the life of the rock salt well.

The University of Kentucky Mine Ventilation Manager (UKMVM) is a system that contains Level Five knowledge bases and comprises an expert mine ventilation management system. The package uses production rule language (PRL) to interpret data monitored from sensors, e.g., for airflow, temperature, and concentration of gases, in an underground mining environment. Activated from the PRL knowledge bases are Pascal subprograms which (1) organize the monitored data to set up emergency consultations, (2) display graphic representations of a mine's ventilation network with the latest sensor readings, (3) provide interactive updating of mine ventilation parameters, e.g., resistance changes, revised flow requirements, and new regulator and fan settings. Also activated from these knowledge bases are programs which (1) monitor airflow, temperature and gas concentrations from a physical mine ventilation model and (2) adjust regulator openings and fan rpm's. Thus, as an expert system the UKMVM not only presents advisory consultations for underground environmental emergencies, but also serves as an interface between the monitoring and responsive control aspects in the continuous maintenance of normal mine ventilation.

The Minera Ojos Del Salado (MINOSAL) concentrator is located 20 km (12 miles) southeast of Copiapo, Chile. It processes copper ore provided by its Santos and Resguardo mines at a capacity of 4.2 kt/d (4620 stpd). In 1982, Phelps Dodge acquired the majority interest in MINOSAL to explore the property's potential. At that time, the concentrator plant was a small, antiquated installation with a capacity of 674 t/d (740 stpd). At the time of the pur¬chase, the majority of the ore was produced from the Santos and Resguardo mines, but custom ores of copper, silver and gold were also treated. The acquisition occurred at a crucial time in the copper business, since the price had fallen to nearly 50 cents/ lb. In 1985, Phelps Dodge purchased the outstanding interest in MINOSAL and acquired 100% of the property. Today, after numerous improvements and two expansions, the concentrator is a combination of old and new equipment. The regrind mills, for example, have been in service for about 50 years, while the ceramic concentrate filter represents the latest technology.

"INTRODUCTION “Sampling is the process of taking a small portion of an article such that the consistency of the portion shall be representative of the whole” (Baxter and Parks, 1939) “An orebody is a mixture of minerals in proportions that vary in different parts of the mass. As a consequence the proportion of contained metals also varies from place to place. Therefore, a single sample taken in any particular place would not contain the same proportion of metals as does the orebody as a whole except by a highly improbable coincidence. The probable error, which would be very large if only one sample were taken, decreases with the number of samples, but it never disappears completely unless the samples are so numerous and so large that their aggregate is equal to the orebody itself, in which case the orebody would be completely used up in the process of sampling. Since carrying sampling to such an extreme would defeat its own purpose, some probable error is always present in actual cases and the practical objective is to reduce this probable error to allowable limits. This means balancing the number of samples against the desired accuracy; if there are not enough samples the result is unreliable; if there are too many, the time and expense of taking them is excessive.” (McKinstry, et al., 1948). In an actual orebody, the accuracy of sampling depends not alone on the number of samples but also on proper distribution of them throughout the orebody, for it would obviously be incorrect to take all of the samples either in a rich part or a lean part. Therefore it is important to select the places in such a way that all parts of the orebody will be represented. “For those who cultivate land which is alike arid, heavy , and barren, and in which they sow seeds, do not make so great a harvest as those who cultivate a fertile and mellow soil and sow their grain in that. "The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently developed a series of models utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to study gas distribution around a continuous mining machine with various fan-powered flooded bed scrubber discharge configurations. CFD models utilizing Species Transport Model without reactions in FLUENT were constructed to evaluate the redirection of scrubber discharge toward the mining face rather than behind the return curtain. The following scenarios are considered in this study: 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face on the off-curtain side of the continuous miner; 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face, but divided equally to both sides of the machine; and 15% of the discharge redirected toward the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, with 85% directed into the return. These models were compared to a model with a conventional scrubber discharge where air is directed away from the face into the return. The CFD models were calibrated and validated based on experimental data and accurately predicted sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas levels at four gas monitoring locations. One additional prediction model was simulated to consider a different scrubber discharge angle for the 100% redirected, equally divided case. These models identified relatively high gassy areas around the continuous miner which may not warrant their use in coal mines with medium to high methane liberation rates. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models, and the validation of the models based on experimental data.INTRODUCTION Methane gas and respirable dust are two hazards frequently encountered at continuous miner (CM) operations. An accumulation of both methane gas and coal dust may lead to massive explosions underground [1], and overexposure to respirable coal dust can result in pneumoconiosis (commonly referred to as “Black Lung Disease”) in coal workers [2]. Current U.S. federal coal mine regulations limit concentrations of methane gas to below 1% at the face area and require exposures to respirable coal dust to be at or less than 2.0 mg/m3 for an 8 h shift average. Begin on August 1, 2016; the overall respirable dust standard in coal mines is reduced from 2.0 to 1.5 mg/m3 for full shift sampling. If the quartz content of the dust exceeds 5% by weight, the dust standard becomes more stringent, reducing the allowable concentration to the value of 10 divided by the % quartz."

Aggregate producers nationwide well recognize the numerous problems often faced in securing local approval to open and operate new gravel pits and rock quarries. Similar problems are faced in Colorado, but this region also presents certain political, social, and geological complexities that have become particularly troublesome in the last 10 years. The gravity of the local permitting dilemma can be related directly to the worsening supply-demand imbalance for aggregates in the state's most populated area, the Front Range urban corridor, particularly the Denver metropolitan area. The drive to develop crushed-rock reserves to supplement dwindling alluvial supplies and to meet increasing regional growth demands was somewhat predictable but perhaps more a "last resort" alternative forced onto producers by a hesitant and often apathetic government.

As we move towards the 21st Century there are several factors that will influence the markets and processing requirements for industrial minerals. Traditional markets for many industrial minerals in the developed world are frequently stagnant or decreasing because of their maturity or due to environmental factors such as reclamation, recovery of byproducts, and recycling. Some industrial minerals are greatly affected by these factors, while others are either immune to or have adapted successfully to meet these challenges. In the developing countries of the world, there is rapid market growth and resource exploitation. The future of specific mineral commodities in several markets will be discussed.

The most common method of treating mine drainage to prevent water pollution consists of neutralization and aeration. This process removes the acidity, iron, aluminum, and some other heavy metals, but does not render a water suitable for domestic or industrial use because of the high dissolved solids, hardness, and sulfate in the treated water. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has been sponsoring and conducting research since 1966 on the use of reverse osmosis (R.O.) for the treatment of mine drainage. This process has been found to be highly effective in the removal of nearly all the dissolved solids. In addition, since R.O. is a concentrating process, potentials for recovery of valuable heavy metals are possible. This paper is a review of the state-of-the-art on the treatment of mine drainage by reverse osmosis.

As most of you have probably surmised from the title of my paper, I am here today to talk with you about the use of diesel engines in the American mining industry and whether or not the free choice to use such equipment will continue to be available to mine operators. Of course, I will present to you my prepared remarks, however, these remarks may be essentially academic in light of a news release, parts of which I would like to read to you. Washington, D. C., The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare today announced proposed new regulations to reduce occupational health risks to workers in the U. S. mining industries by requiring the removal of all diesel powered equipment from American mines by December 31st "While we do not have complete and conclusive information to quantify these health risks we feel it is prudent to undertake this restriction on the use of diesel powered equipment without waiting for the completion of studies that are currently underway to identify and quantify these health risks," said a Department spokesman. HEW has been concerned about the health risks of diesel emissions in the underground coal mines for some time and have investigations underway designed to conclusively demonstrate the nature and magnitude of any health risks. However, HEW has decided to proceed with these regulations without waiting for the final results of these investigations. Further, HEW feels there is sufficient probability that diesel health risks do exist in all mining applications and consequently, the proposed regulations will apply to all surface and underground mining operations. It goes on a little further and indicates that due to the necessity of finalizing these regulations without delay, a period of fifteen days has been provided to receive comments regarding these proposed regulations.

The kinetics of atmospheric sulfuric acid leaching from a Brazilian nickel laterite ore was assessed using distinct reducing agents and ore mineralogy. This transitional ore contains 1.63% Ni distributed as 1.27% in coarse size (− 500 + 150 μm), mainly as silicates (lizardite and chlorite—28.6%), and 2.06%in the fines fraction (− 75 μm), mainly as iron oxy-hydroxides (goethite and hematite—49%). The effects of temperature, acid concentration, reducing reagent type, and concentration were evaluated. The − 75 μm fraction limited the leaching efficiency and the use of reducing media with thiosulfate improved leaching and Ni-Fe selectivity. However, at constant Eh of 626–743 mV and a pH range between 0.2 and 1.1, no substantial rise in metals extraction, except for Co and Mn, has been observed. In order to determine the process control at 95 °C, two regions in the extraction curves were used in combination with the shrinking core model. Control by porous diffusion was observed and the kinetic constant was found to be in the order kFe<kNi<kMn<kCo<kMg for atmospheric leaching without Eh control. In reducing media for the first 15 min of leaching, the kinetic constant was found to be kFe<kNi<kMg≅kCo<kMn as derived from Ni disseminated into iron oxides structures.

Refractory gold concentrates often contain sub-microscopic gold that is encapsulated within the crystal matrix of iron sulphide minerals such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite. To recover the gold, the host mineral must generally be broken down chemically, by oxidative processes such as roasting, pressure oxidation or bacterial leaching, which expose the gold for subsequent recovery by leaching in cyanide solution. The focus of attention in these pre-treatment processes is usually the oxidation of the sulphides to elemental sulphur, sulphur dioxide gas or sulphate ions. Less attention is paid to the deportment of iron and the changes in its oxidation state, although this can have a profound effect on gold and silver liberation, as well as down stream operating costs. Iron sulphide minerals break down completely during pressure oxidation, and dissolve in the sulphuric acid solution that is generated from oxidation of the sulphides. This liberates the tiny gold particles that were originally trapped in the sulphide crystals, and gold recovery during subsequent cyanidation is usually very high (>95%). Iron goes into solution in the oxidation process, initially as ferrous sulphate, but this is rapidly oxidized to ferric sulphate, which then hydrolyzes and re-precipitates. The form of the precipitate varies depending on the operating conditions in the autoclave and the presence of certain metal cations. When the acidity in the autoclave is quite low (<20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is high (>200OC) the formation of hematite is favoured. When the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is relatively low (160 to 200OC), the formation of basic iron sulphate is favoured. If the ore or the leach solution contain significant levels of certain cations (such as Na+, K+, NH4+, Ag+ or Pb2+) and the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4), jarosite compounds are favoured. Hematite is the desired iron product in the autoclave discharge, for both metallurgical and environmental reasons, but it is difficult to operate an autoclave under the conditions required for effective liberation of gold without converting some of the iron to basic iron sulphate and/or jarosite. These compounds fall into a category of iron compounds known generically as iron hydroxy sulphates, all of which can cause significant processing and environmental problems in the downstream gold process. This paper deals specifically with basic iron sulphate; the conditions under which it is formed in an autoclave, the problems that are caused by its presence in the feed to a cyanidation plant, and possible remedial strategies that can be adopted, both in the autoclave and downstream.

Fortunately, few mining professionals have dealt with what all mining professionals fear---a mine disaster. Unfortunately, many have dealt with ?accidents? which may or may not claim lives but nevertheless rise to the level of a ?disaster? given the fallout of liability and litigation in today?s society.1 The undersigned authors published an article some ten years ago regarding crisis management2 based upon their collective first-hand experiences in actual disasters to that point in history. Unfortunately, disasters have occurred since that time, prompting legislation, and a fresh analysis and expansion of those basic principles is certainly in order. Without question, no two disasters are ever alike, yet general guidelines for forming an effective plan of action can be formulated?and if a mining operation is to have any chance of survival after a disaster, such a plan is vital. The primary concern as any disaster evolves remains as stated a 2003 SME article3--the protection of human life. From that point, the focus moves to any assistance that may be needed given the magnitude of the situation. Permeating throughout this process is "damage control." The first step in dealing with a disaster, however, begins long before any threat of danger arises?formulation and implementation of an Emergency Response Plan.

Diasporic bauxite from the Mugla-Milas region was mechanically activated in a planetary mill for different activation times and the structural changes were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and specific surface area analysis (BET ? Burnauer, Emmett and Teller). Non-activated and activated bauxite samples were leached directly in alkaline (Na2O) solution at atmospheric conditions and the activation procedure led to the amorphization and structural disordering of the diasporic bauxite structure, which increased the dissolution efficiency. Effects of milling speed, liquid/bauxite ratio and leaching time on alumina extraction in direct alkaline leaching of diasporic bauxite were also studied. The United States continues to be the largest producer and consumer of copper in the world. Table 1 on the following page shows several production statistics for 1974, the most recent year which the non-communist world copper industry might consider a good year, and for 1976 and 1977. In 1974 an estimated 24 percent of the non-communist world&apos;s newly mined copper was mined in the United States, and. 87 to 89 percent of that was from the western porphyry coppers. In 1976 U. S. new mine production was down to 22 percent of the non-communist world&apos;s newly mined copper, and the percentage of U. S. new mine production supplied by the porphyry coppers had risen to 89 to 91 percent. In 1977 the statistics remained the same as in 1976. U. S. porphyry copper production represented about 65 percent of U. S. refined copper consumption in 1974, rose to 75 percent in 1976, and dropped back to 61 percent in 1977 as imports of foreign copper into the United States began to swell.
