National income originating compared to physical production for an enterprise or an industry reflects its ability to strengthen the national economy. For a single industrial sector or for an industry this comparison can be useful to reflect changes that may occur in this ability to contribute because of changing supply-demand-income-investment equilibria. A favorable relationship can be postulated by specified economic incentive, and the accompanying technologic input required can be shown. The new index proposes the use of the Federal Reserve Board indexes of production divided by the constant dollar income originating in the petroleum industry which reflects increases or decreases in performance. When compared with other mineral industries and with, total industry, an approximation of relative strength is evident. By constructing three different hypothetical conditions for future petroleum imports, assuming a constant excess capacity requirement for domestic production, and providing an estimate for future domestic demand for petroleum, the impact on the performance index can be shown. Thus, a strong position for the petroleum and natural gas industry can be stated. If this is done, it becomes evident that because of restrictions on cost-price relationships, a drilling program that would provide enough domestic oil to meet demand may not be practicable. By difference, the amount of improvement in methods of production and processing through technologic advancements can be stated explicitly.

The mining engineer must be able to predict the structural behavior of the rock around underground openings so that he can answer questions relating to safety and economics. With the present status of rock mechanics knowledge, exact predictions cannot be attained and approximate idealizations are made. As a first approximation, structural design makes use of theory, laboratory testing of rock properties, and available experience from excavations in similar rock formations. However, realistic design can usually be obtained only after in-situ observations and measurements are made. After all the information is collected, judgement and experience play a most important role in the final formulation of the design. This paper describes part of a geotechnical program which was instrumental in obtaining information for the design of large oil shale pillars. The work was carried out during 1971 and 1972 in the experimental mine of the Colony Development Operation. Colony is an oil shale venture formed between Atlantic Richfield Company, Operator, The Oil Shale Corporation, Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, and Sohio Petroleum Company to conduct research and development in mining and retorting of oil shale, The property is located in the southern edge of the Piceance Creek Basin in northwestern Colorado, approximately 250 miles west of Denver (Figure 1) . Mining was conducted by the room-and-pillar method in a 60-ft high portion of the Green River Formation at a depth of 600 to 850 ft, Pillar dimensions are approximately 60 ft by 60 ft. The mine site is in the eastern face of the canyon containing the Middle Fork of Parachute Creek, The distance from the mine to the side of the mountain varies from 500 to 1,200 ft, and its height above the stream floor is approximately 700 ft.

An AFM has been applied to study in situ the adsorption of oleic acid on fluorite in aqueous solutions. The AFM images show that fluorite surface becomes smoother with the adsorption of 7 × 10-5 M oleic acid solution at pH 9. Force measurement shows that fluorite is strongly positively charged in water at pH 6, suggesting a neglectable surface carbonation of fluorite. The adsorption of oleic acid at pH 9 renders fluorite more and more negatively charged. The surface morphology change of fluorite as shown by the AFM images suggests that oleic acid chemisorbs on fluorite at pH 9. Increasing temperature can help increase the adsorption of oleic acid on fluorite. It may also improve the lateral polymerization of unsaturated oleic acid on fluorite as suggested by the smoother mineral surface in oleic acid solutions at an elevated temperature.

However, the coal industry's historical management practices must change to remain viable? The practices of the current day efficient coal mine manager are reviewed and examined using W. Edwards Deming's definition of management. The statistical tools, including Pareto Charts, Control Charts and Scatter Diagrams, which identify the problems management must approach differently to increase productivity at a coal mine, are discussed.

Scope of the Courier 300 System The fact that reliable on-stream analysis is a prerequisite for effective flotation control is hardly disputed today. Nevertheless, up to now no system has been available that includes all the equipment necessary for successful analysis. However essential an on-stream analyser is in itself, reliable and accurate assaying can only be assured after techniques for sampling, handling the slurries and computing the X-ray data have been developed for the purpose. The Outokumpu Company's Courier 300 System is a complete package that can be installed and handed over with the key. It includes the equipment needed for sampling and handling the slurries. It has been developed from the start to meet industrial demands. Obviously an on-line system must comply with far stricter standards than one designed for a laboratory. Assays are computed by an Outokumpu 316 digital data processor, which is an integral part of the system and controls its entire performance. The computer software is programmed as a standard package, including a highly advanced new model for assay computation. Analysis output is available for a process computer, report typewriter:, and recorders. The package also includes calibration for slurry assays at our pilot installation before delivery. A complete Courier System can analyse up to 4Z slurries and six elements in each slurry. Thanks to its modular design, it can be dimensioned initially to the customer's requirements and is easy to expand later at low cost. Being a mining company itself, Outokumpu has been able to utilize its own long experience in non-ferrous metallurgy - an important factor contributing to the success of the Courier system. Cyanide (CN) is used to recover gold from its ores in many locations worldwide. In spite of the established history of gold mining in Alaska, modern cyanidation methods have been used at only one location, the Ryan Lode Mine at Ester Dome, near Fairbanks. Ore was processed by heap leaching between 1987 and 1989, when permitting issues caused operations to be terminated. Those issues have since been resolved, and plans to reopen the mine are currently being discussed. Plans are also proceeding to develop several other ore deposits in the state, all of which include the use of cyanide for gold recovery [6]. Since tailings and effluent water produced from these mines will require treatment, it is important to develop detoxification methods suitable for the Arctic and sub-Arctic conditions found in Alaska. Several methods exist for removing cyanide from mining wastewater. However, most industrial users prefer chemical treatment systems, and typically use sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, or sulfur dioxide/air/copper to oxidize free and complexed cyanides [9]. Biological treatment has been used successfully at two sites in the United States [30,32] and field tested at several others [20,27,28]. In addition, one mine uses "natural processes", which include natural oxidation, photodegradation, and degradation by naturally occurring bacteria [33].

Repairing and replacing equipment damaged by corrosion and abrasion is a major cost throughout industry, especially in the coal mining industry. Careful study of corrosion and abrasion, and their causes and effects, often leads to the selection of alternative materials which can provide economies. What, actually, are corrosion and abrasion and how do they contribute to the cost of operating a coal-preparation plant? Furthermore, what can be done to alleviate corrosion and abrasion problems and thereby reduce operating costs? These questions will be answered in the following discussion, which will describe the destructive action of corrosion and abrasion and give several methods for controlling corrosion and abrasion losses, These methods include the substitution of stainless steel for carbon steel, the use of corrosion inhibitors, and the use of design to eliminate corrosion and abrasion. Examples will be given illustrating the benefits that have resulted in plant tests when these methods of controlling corrosion and abrasion were used.

This paper presents the process methods of beneficiating various copper-cobalt and copper-zinc ores mined by Gecamines in Zaire. Geology and mineralization of both sedimentary and vein type deposits are described with special emphasis on the production of oxide, dolomitic and sulfide concentrates. Description of different types of concentrators and their treatment methods are discussed for the production of sulfide, oxide and dolomitic concentrates. Production of concentrates, their consumption and stocks are briefly reviewed. Modernization of the concentrators with substantial investments on grinding, classification, flotation methods and tailings treatments are also discussed to improve the metallurgical efficiency of the concentrators with a view to improve the production of concentrates both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Oxidized sulfide minerals, commonly formed by weathering, increasingly are becoming important resources as primary sulfide deposits are depleted. Oxidation, in general, reduces selectivity and recovery in flotation. The objective of this research was to determine the mechanisms of oxidation and collector adsorption in sulfide systems as a step towards developing improved technologies for beneficiation of oxidized sulfides. Data from microcell flotation tests are combined with electrochemical and spectrophotometric measurements. The adsorption of ethyl xanthate (EX) on oxidized sulfides was characterized using AC impedance techniques and correlated to flotation response. The floatability of chalcocite, chalcopyrite and pyrite was dependent on the extent of oxidation. Oxidation for 1?) d at 65? C inhibited flotation of chalcocite, and chalcopyrite even after the addition of a large amount (1 x 10') M) of collector. Heavily oxidized (27 d) chalcocite remained unfloatable. However, longer oxidation of pyrite and chalcopyrite restored the floatability. Oxidation resulted in an electrically resistive, nonporous surface layer.

In 1989 an Autogenous Grinding Task Force was formed to study potential autogenous grinding circuits to replace the existing semi-autogenous grinding at the National Steel Pellet Plant located in Keewatin, Minnesota. Pilot plant test work performed by the Hanna Research Center (HRC) indicated that fully autogenous grinding with pebble extraction and crushing could feasibly be incorporated into the existing circuits. In 1990, one of the existing ten grinding mills was converted for an in-plant test incorporating pebble crushing. The full scale test work conducted in 1990 and 1991 verified the pilot plant projections with primary mill throughputs from the fully autogenous circuit utilizing pebble crushing being greater than throughput of the existing SAG mill circuits.

Geochemical prospecting method using stream sediments, soils and rock chips has been tested to see the applicability for the typical Kuroko field in Japan. Three independent anomalies have been detected in maps being shown by grav densities of cells which are represented by the results of factor analysis as well as distribution of minor elements scaled in logarithm. A small vein type mineralization which has outcrops could be attributed to the origin of them whereas the one near the surface of known Kuroko deposit to a coincidence. The addition of drill core geochemistry is required to complete the interpretation.

In most operating coal-cleaning plants, a significant amount of pyrite is recovered in the froth during flotation of high-sulfur coal. Reducing the pyrite recovery first requires that the primary recovery mechanism should be Identified, as different measures are required for reducing entrainment, locked-particle flotation, or true hydrophobic flotation. In this paper, evidence is presented which suggests that hydrophobic flotation is not an important mechanism for recovery of liberated pyrite from freshly-ground coal when the collector is a neutral oil, and that the bulk of the floated pyrite occurs either as a result of simple entrainment or by mechanical locking with floatable coal particles. Column flotation results are also presented which show that significant sulfur reductions can be achieved by reducing levels of entrainment.

The level of steel consumption per capita is one of the principal indicators of a country's standard of living. It is no coincidence that the materially advanced nations possess viable iron and steel industries to provide a reliable and economic source of steal for the manufacturing industries. No other metal is as dominantly important in manufacturing as steel. The blast furnace - steel furnace complex based on coking coal, ferrous scrap and iron ore - continues to be the principal steel-producing method. Less important is the electric furnace method based on scrap, In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the many direct reduction processes that are not dependent on coking coal but usually produce a product for further refining in steel furnaces. No matter which series of processes are used, iron ore is essentially the only source of virgin iron units. Thus, to such a vital and capital-intense industry as steel, access to a relatively inexpensive, long- term supply of iron ore is essential.

This is achieved by creating a shared situational awareness thru incorporating information from a multitude of data generating agents, creating COA, selecting the appropriate and turning it into a plan. The lacustrine Green River Formation of Eocene age in the Green River Basin, southwest Wyoming, contains the world's large resource of natural sodium carbonate in bedded trona (Na2CO3? NaHCO3? 2H2O). In this study, 126 billion tons are estimated to be present in 22 beds, ranging from 4 to 36 feet in thickness. These 22 beds underlie areas of about 50 to more than 775 square miles at depths ranging from about 650 to more than 3,000 feet below the surface. The total resource of trona ore in the basin for which drilling information is available is estimated to be about 149 billion short tons. The undeveloped deeper trona beds in the southern part of the basin may be exploitable by solution mining. Additional unevaluated sodium carbonate resources are present in disseminated shortite in strata interbedded with the trona and in shallow sodium carbonate brines in the northeast part of the basin.

Kaolin samples from Rio Capim resources were treated in conventional and superconducting magnetic separators to study the main variables that influence the color removal process. Coating clays and delaminated clay were tested. Retention time (or pulp injection velocity), magnetic field intensity and matrix type were the' variables studied. The feed brightness ranged from 84.7 to 87.6 % ISO for the coating clays and from 80.7 to 85.4 % ISO for the delaminated clay. The results showed unleached brightness values higher than 88 % ISO for coating products and higher than 87 % ISO for the delaminated product, using a conventional magnetic separator with an applied field of 1.5 to 2.0 Tesla. With a maximum field intensity in the superconducting machine of 5.0 Tesla, unleached brightness values higher than 88.5 % ISO for both coating and delaminated clays were attained.

The importance of factoring mining dilution into feasibility stage ore reserve estimates is discussed. An example that relates the issue of mining dilution to the size of smallest volumes that can be mined selectively is given. Relationship between the size of the selective mining units (SMU's) and the variance of their average grade is presented. The concept of variance reduction and its use in factoring mining dilution into geostatistical ore reserve estimation is described. An approach to estimate variance reduction factor by way of conditional simulation is introduced.

The cleaning of coal by the use of jigs is one of the oldest methods of separating coal from its impurities. Although in many situations jigs have been replaced by other methods, by far the largest percentage of coal today is still being cleaned by some form of jigs. Some piston- or plunger-type jigs are still in use throughout the world; however, the greater number are air pulsated, generally called the Baum jig, named after the original inventor, Fritz Baum of Germany. This standard jig, with slight modifications, has been in use for over 75 years. Up until recently, however, it has had certain limitations in obtaining the high performance and efficiencies required in modern coal preparation practice. TO improve its performance, some radical modifications have been made in its design and operation SO that there is now a Baum-type jig giving much higher performance in terms of capacity, efficiency and sharpness of separation- This new jig is called the Batac, and the purpose of this paper is to describe its characteristics and present data giving its performance in treating coarse and fine sizes of coal.

Requirements of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) for Eastern and Western U.S. coals will not be the same because of differences in coal sulfur content, ash analysis, and beating value. The effects of these differences and of limited availability of water in the West are the subjects of this paper. Eastern and Central bituminous coals are generally high in sulfur and require removal efficiencies in the range of 70 to 90 percent to meet the Federal emission standard of 1.2 lb SO2/MMBtu. Ash in Eastern coals is low in alkali content and is relatively insoluble in scrubber solutions. High sulfur content and market availability make salable product methods more attractive in the fast and Central United States than in the West. Western subbituminous coals and lignites are generally low in sulfur content, however, only a few deposits could reliably meet the Federal emission standard without FGD, Required removal efficiencies generally fall in the range of 0 to 60 percent to meet the 1.2 lb SO2/MMBtu limit. If the standard were raised to 2 lb S02/MMBtu, approximately two-thirds of Western coals could be burned without FGD. Some Western coals contain ash high in alkali, some of which is soluble in scrubber solutions. This complicates scrubber chemistry, but it also provides the meant for displacing some or all of the limestone requirements when only moderate S02 removal is required. Dry areas in the West would benefit from full commercial developement of dry processes of FGD.

Caterpillar introduced 21 new products during Caterpillar Press Days ‘96, held in June at the company’s proving grounds near Tucson, AZ. The event, billed as the largest product introduction ever held by Caterpillar, was attended by press from around the world. Most of the new products were demonstrated at Caterpillar’s Tinaja Hills Training Center in the Sierrita Mountains south of Tucson. Under the scorching Sonora Desert sun, the press was treated to demonstrations of the new equipment. After a display of the equipment’s power and capabilities, the press was given an opportunity to operate the new models and, in some cases, compare them with the old.
