In 2007, Rosebud Mining Company (RMC) opted to extend the reserve base of Tracy Lynne Mine by developing through a sandstone channel. The extension provided access to approximately 6 million additional recoverable tons (approximately 8 years of mining) which originally had been deemed inaccessible. An evaluation of the mine?s existing ventilation system, which was designed to meet the needs of the original limited reserve, concluded that two ventilation shafts would likely be required to adequately ventilate the projected workings in the expanded reserve. To assist in the evaluation, a ventilation model of the mine was developed using Ohio Automation?s ?ICAMPS MineVent? software based on field data from Tracy Lynne Mine, prior ventilation survey experience at similar RMC mines, and relevant published sources. Model results suggested that the most economical shafts would be an 8-ft diameter return and a 4-ft diameter intake. Unfortunately, issues related to property leasing and shaft site permitting caused construction delays. Therefore, the model was also used and proved to be effective in prioritizing interim ventilation upgrades which could be implemented in order to maintain coal production. Model results indicated that the best interim upgrades included rehabilitating restricted entries and damaged stoppings and replacing the main fan with a higher pressure fan. From late 2010 to mid-2012, all interim upgrades and shafts were implemented. Current models and mine experience indicate that ventilation will not be the limiting factor for mining the additional reserve.

Reliable ore reserve estimates for deposits with highly skewed grade disributions are difficult tasks to perform. Although some recent geostatistical techniques are available to handle problems with these estimations, ordinary kriging or conventional interpolation methods are still widely used to estimate the ore reserves for such deposits. The estimation results can be very sensitive to the search parameters used during the interpolation of grades with these methods. This paper compares the ore reserve estimates from ordinary kriging using several cases in which certain search parameters are varied. The comparisons are extended to different mineralizations to show the changing effects of these parameters.

Cemented rockfill (CRF) is being used to backfill primary and secondary stopes at the Eagle Mine, an underground nickel and copper mine operated by Lundin Mining. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers from the Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) are conducting cooperative research with the mine staff to determine if the size of a CRF sample affects its measured strength properties. Based on previous research by NIOSH, cylindrical samples of CRF ranging in size from six to eighteen inches in diameter were cast at the mine and cured underground. The samples were later transported to the SMRD laboratory and the Michigan Technological University where tests were conducted to determine the strength and elastic properties of the CRF. To further analyze the relationship between backfill density and compressive strength, different ASTM International compaction techniques were used to cast the samples. For comparison, tests were also conducted on in-situ core samples that were drilled from a stope which had been backfilled with the same CRF mix. The data collected from this study not only improves our understanding of CRF in-situ properties but also helps optimize Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) methods for backfill preparation and testing.

"The objective of this study was to develop a laboratory-scale method to rank the ignition and fire hazards of commonly used underground mine materials and to eliminate the need for expensive large-scale tests that are currently being used. A radiant panel apparatus was used to determine the relevant thermal characteristics of the materials: time to ignition, critical heat flux for ignition, heat of gasification, and mass loss rate. Three thermal parameters, TRP, TP1, and TP4, were derived from the data, then were developed and subsequently used to rank the combined ignition and fire hazards of the combustible materials from low hazard to high hazard. The results compared favorably with thermal and ignition hazards of similar materials reported in the literature and represent a simpler approach to quantifying these combustible hazards. INTRODUCTION The potential fire hazard from combustible mine materials is a major concern that can impact the safety of mine workers. Combustible materials tend to be solids and within this category there exist degrees of flammability and fire resistance. These materials may be readily ignitable or they may be able to withstand high temperatures and high heat fluxes. Presently, no simple methodology exists to assess these possible fire behaviors and quantify the resultant fire hazards. Thus, better knowledge of the thermal properties and chemical characteristics of combustible materials is of great importance to the safety of mine workers. Tewarson [1994] developed a methodology which he subsequently used to evaluate the ignition and fire resistant properties of combustible mine materials, but these efforts are more than 20 years old, and do not include many of the new materials used in mines today. The standard practice that has evolved for a combustible material to be approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration for use in underground coal mines is to conduct extensive and costly large-scale experiments on each new material that is used in a particular mine operation. Results of such tests provide pass/fail answers to the questions of a material’s flammability or fire resistance, yet they provide little, if any, information that will lead to a better understanding of the basic mechanisms involved. Therefore, there is a need to quantify material flammability properties and to develop a methodology to rank the ignition and fire hazards of commonly used underground mine materials. During the heating and ignition stages of combustible materials, properties such as smolder susceptibility, minimum surface temperature for ignition, thermal conductivity, heat capacity, density, and heat of gasification are known to be important [Apte, 2006]. During the flaming stage, additional parameters, such as the heat of combustion, heat release rate, flame spread rate, yields of soot/smoke, and toxic gas production become more important as the flame is sustained and spreads. In very general terms, the heat flux incident on the surface of a solid combustible not only controls the rate of temperature increase of the local fuel surfaces, resulting in expulsion of fuel vapors that sustain the flaming process, but also the heating of other combustible surfaces that subsequently ignite and spread flame."

Death and injury rates in mining have been the highest of any industry; the injury severity rates in mines have also been the highest. Tentative figures reveal that 1971 was the best year yet for the bituminous coal indus¬try with the lowest number of fatal accidents. Nevertheless, 177 men were killed at a frequency rate of 0.76 per million man hours. Coal mine accident statistics have been described at various times as unacceptable and intolerable and recently resulted in the enactment of massive legislation. The 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act was passed by Congress "to improve the working conditions and practices in coal mines and to prevent accidents and occupational diseases originating in the coal mining industry." The prevention of accidents in coal mines is the statutory responsibility of mining engineers and the moral responsibility of all who have any part to play in mining coal. The questions to be answered by these men may well be - What are the reasons for the high accident rate? Are the mines as safe as they can be? Are our mines sufficiently manned to insure proper supervision of production cycles and safety requirements? Are our plans for safety committees, safety campaigns, and safety inspections sufficient? Are they producing the results intended? If not, how can these be reorganized to have a greater impact? What is the real cost of an accident? What are the immediate and long-term plans for further improvements? These questions are in no way exhaustive, and the answers are not easy. There are many aspects of mine safety, and any one of them can be the subject of a lengthy discussion. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to limit the analysis to documented fatal electrical accidents in mines so that meaningful conclusions for improvement in electrical accident-experience statistics can be made. In doing this, it is also the intention to emphasize areas of missing information and propose a few suggestions for better hazard analysis.

The effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on growth and respiration of Thiobacillus, thiooxidans, and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, organisms involved in acid leaching of copper sulfide minerals and uranium oxides, was examined. Oxygen uptake and growth by T. thiooxidans were inhibited after contact with 0.82 mM H2O2. Inhibition of oxygen uptake by T. ferrooxidans occurred at 8.24 mM H2O2, and growth was inhibited after 6 hours exposure to 2.06 mM H2O2. Higher concentrations of H2O2 can be used without detriment to thiobacilli if it is dissipated prior to reaching the oxidation pond or dump surface. "The City of Ottawa’s Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel consists of two interconnected tunnels totaling 6.2 km with a diameter of 3m including access shafts and hydraulic structures which connect to the City’s most critical sewers. This tunnel will be built 15m to 30m below ground in the downtown core adjacent to, and crossing below, the Light Rail Tunnel, which introduces additional considerations in terms of sequencing and risk mitigation. The City embarked on a unique Procurement Process to address the risks involved with a large tunnel project and those associated with tunneling below downtown, underneath and adjacent to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and connecting to live critical sewers. This paper describes the unique procurement approach employed and the contractual risk mitigation measures developed to provide the best value while minimizing risk. Specific features include Market Sounding, using a Fairness Commissioner, Contractor Prequalification and Risk Mitigation Measures in the Tender documents. INTRODUCTION This paper describes how the City of Ottawa (the City) and the project design team developed a strategic Procurement Process and Tender that incorporated industry best practices for technical and contractual risk management for the Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) project. The process was unique in that, while it employed a systematic review of project risks, it also solicited input from industry, stakeholders and provincial and federal partners to develop the request for Tender for this traditional design-bid-build project. Key drivers for this approach were initiated from the City’s concerns for cost control, cost certainty and overall project risk mitigation. To address these concerns, the City implemented the risk review and mitigation process right from the project design team selection. It was critical that the project design team embraced this risk management philosophy and carried it through each phase of the project. This paper serves as an excellent resource for municipalities or other owners embarking on a similar tunnel project, on how to properly apply industry best practices and the benefits of using them."

"It is now possible to use 3D X-ray tomography analysis for plant-site characterization of coarse particles at a sampling rate of about 3 kg/min for particles which range in size from 150 mm to 1 mm at a voxel resolution of about 150 microns. This is quite a significant advance in X-ray tomography technology and should be useful for plant-site coarse particle characterization (size, shape, composition, density, texture, grain exposure, mineral liberation) with a response time of minutes after receiving the sample. Applications in the mineral industries are discussed including the coal industry, aggregate industry, metal mining and the processing of industrial minerals. INTRODUCTION Plant-site characterization of coarse particles at coal preparation plants, crushed stone/aggregate plants, and mineral processing plants is needed to improve plant capacity, product quality, and/or process efficiency. Not much on-line coarse particle characterization is done at these plants. Some limited information regarding particle size is obtained on-line from reflected light images using systems such as the OPSA, Split, and WipFrag analyzers. Even laboratory analysis of coarse particles has been difficult because of the large amount of sample required to insure statistical significance of the results. During the past decades laboratory 3D characterization of particles from energy and mineral resources by X-ray tomography has been demonstrated and used to good advantage [1, 2]. 3D X-ray tomographic analysis had its origin in the medical services industry; it is used to provide internal images of the human body and now has also been developed for non-medical applications [3]. Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram for the cone-beam geometry micro-CT system. In our case X-rays from a microfocus X-ray generator are partially attenuated by the sample (a packed bed of particles) that is made to rotate in equal steps in a full circle about a single axis of the particle sample. At each rotational position, the surviving X-ray photons are detected by a planar two-dimensional array (image intensifier) large enough to contain the shadow of the specimen. These two dimensional projection images are collected using conventional video technology. The video signal for each projection is then converted to a two-dimensional digital array by an image processing system. Finally, a three-dimensional image is reconstructed from the collected set of projection images. With the availability of automated high speed X-ray tomography [4] it now seems possible to do plant-site particle characterization at a sampling rate of about 3 kg/min for particles which range in size from 150 mm to 1 mm at a voxel resolution of about 150 microns. To address coal refuse tailings storage needs for a mine operation in western Canada, a feasible solution was to convert excavated open pits into tailings cells. A slope stability investigation and design study were completed to determine the necessary width and slope geometry for in-situ native plugs as the impoundment embankment. The native plugs separate the previous open pit from the current active open pit. This configuration allows for the deposition of refuse tailings in the previous pit while allowing mining to safely continue “downstream” of the temporary impoundment. As mining progresses, each subsequent pit will be filled with refuse tailings; thereby, buttressing the upstream slope of the previous native plug. Although these cells are excavated, and the timeframe for downstream exposure is relatively limited, the native plugs are classified as dams and must be designed to meet applicable safety of dam standards since they impound water and tails above mining personnel in the subsequent open pit. The presentation and paper will discuss the investigation and analysis conducted to develop the geotechnical and hydrogeological design recommendations.

Chain pillar design formula under weak roof condition was developed by statistically analyzing the results from the three dimensional finite element parametric analyses. The parameters such as mechanical properties of the roof and floor strata, overburden depth, panel width and length, and coal strength were incorporated in the formula. A conversion formula which transfers a rectangular chain pillar into a square chain pillar of equal strength is proposed. The influence of high in-situ horizontal stresses, which are often encountered in the coalfield, on chain pillar stability is also discussed.

Suboleski and King (1990) analyzed the reasons for the dramatic increase in underground coal mine productivity during the last 10 years. This paper examines whether this increase can be extended. The paper forecasts whether the mix of technological, procedural and other factors that produced the increase will change in the future. The forecast is based on the base case and spreadsheet production model described in the previous paper.

Geostatistical literature has been dealing with recoverable reserve estimation techniques for the last 30 years. There have been well established support correction techniques (Le. affine correction, indirect log-normal correction, etc.) to deal with volume -variance relationship globally in determining what will be the reserves above a cutoff grade during mining. Kriging has become the accepted technique in the mining industry for ore reserve estimation. Many large companies are using this method for gold and copper deposit modeling. In general, the estimates coming from kriging are smooth. The variances of the block grades estimated by kriging are often lower than the material that will be mined selectively. As a result, kriging tends to under estimate reserves at high cutoff grades and overestimates them in low cutoff grades. It is necessary to perform additional steps after kriging if the goal is to determine recoverable reserves at some cutoff and not the in situ resources. In the mining industry, it is becoming more and more common for the low grade heap leach projects to consider whether the higher grade portion of a deposit may be processed by a mill at higher profits. Similarly, a concentrator -refinery operations are implementing heap leach -SX-EW option for the lower grade portion of their deposit. These options are making it very critical to estimate the low and high end of the grade distributions more accurately. Ore reserve estimation is normally done by using widely spaced exploration data which has very small size support (Le. core samples). Selective mining is carried out on ore control that is based on closely spaced blasthole data normally averaged into larger polygons based on some cutoff grade. Estimated grades from exploration data need to reflect the variability of the grades of the selectively mined units if they are used without further adjustments to predict recoverable reserves.

Asbestos is a broad term embracing a number of fibrous silicate minerals. These minerals look extremely fragile, yet their fibers have a tensile strength equal to that of piano wire. Chrysotile asbestos is the only mineral that can be woven into cloth, and its fibrous structure is, if anything, even more amazing than its remarkable ability to withstand heat. Because of its unique physical properties asbestos has achieved great industrial importance, and more than 3,000 current uses are known, ranging from use in the kitchen to use in space missiles. Because their minuscule fibers are eminently respirable, asbestos minerals have also found their way into the lungs of humans, where they apparently produce serious biological effects such as asbestosis and lung cancers. 1, 2,3 Because of both their usefulness and their hazardous properties, these minerals have attracted a good deal of attention from research workers during recent years. For example, the surface properties of asbestos minerals have been studied by many investigators. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 However, even for the important mineral chrysotile, the literature data are more or less conflicting. Pundsack4 measured a PZC (point of zero charge) of 10.1; Martinez and Zucker5 measured 11.8; Chwastiak reports 10.8-11.0; and Raddick measured three sepa-rate apparent PZCls at about pH 8.3, 10.0 and 10.9. More recently Trivedi8 reports 10.11. Naumann and Dresher9 have studied surface charge enhancement of chrysotile by metal ions, and describe how the mineral reacts with contaminantions. In the present paper, the mode of dissolution of magnesium and hydroxyl ion from asbestos minerals placed in water was studied by kinetic experiments involving rate at which these items leave the minerals. Also, some study was made of interaction between dissolved species.

We studied yttrium extraction from untreated zircon sand processing waste tailings. Xenotime mineral as the rare earth element source with an abundance of yttrium (REY) was detected in sufficient grade for extraction. As much as 9.03% yttrium exists in zircon tailings (analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry). The presence of yttrium was confirmed by X-ray diffractometry in xenotime minerals, which are yttrium carriers (Y-PO4). The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of leaching conditions on yttrium recovery from zircon sand after alkaline fusion treatment. Alkaline fusion was chosen to decompose phosphate into hydroxide in the xenotimemineral,which will reduce further required hydrometallurgical processing.Alkaline fusionwas carried out for 3 h at 450 °C, with a ratio of sodium hydroxide to zircon tailings sand of ~ 1:1. The alkaline fusion product was leached with water, followed by hydrochloric acid treatment to leach the yttrium. Yttrium recovery reached 87% under optimum conditions (60 °C, 1MHCl, and solid-to-liquid ratio = 1/10 for 7.5 min). A suitable model for yttrium dissolution with hydrochloric acid was diffusion through a solid particle ash layer. The calculated activation energy (EA) for this model was 20.21 kJ/mol.

It has been reported previously that dolomite samples from different locations showed varying flocculation behavior with Poly(ethyleneoxide) (PEO). In this study it is determined that palygorskite associated with the Florida dolomite samples is responsible for their flocculation with PEO. A detailed characterization of the dolomite samples from different locations and its relevance to flocculation with PEO is discussed.

"Stainless steel castings are used in abundance in the mineral processing industry. In rotary kiln-based processes, these castings are typically exposed to high loads, corrosive elements, mechanical abrasion and cyclical temperature exposure. In the processing of iron ore pellets, it is typical to use a traveling grate preheater or a straight grate furnace to heat the pellets. Both machines have a conveyor that is mainly comprised of high temperature stainless steel castings. It is these castings which are the focus of this study. The expected life of these castings can be quite short, their cost quite high and the effort to replace them very labor intensive. The goal of this study was to gain a better understanding of the failure modes of these castings. With that basic understanding, modifications to the alloy content could be made to achieve a new operational paradigm. That paradigm could be a cheaper casting, a longer lasting casting or a casting tailored to special operating conditions (for example, highly corrosive gases or sudden temperature shocks). Over the past 4 years, Metso Minerals has sought to achieve a better understanding of the failure modes through modeling, laboratory testing and sampling of used castings from various end-users. In addition, we have tested new alloys in a laboratory setting and also in the field to see how they would perform compared to the existing ""standard casting"". Our testing has revealed interesting data concerning the impact toughness, sigma phase content and formation, chloride attack and other performance attributes of various grades of stainless steel when exposed to cyclical temperatures. Interesting results were also obtained concerning the addition of rare earth elements (Niobium, Boron, etc), nitrogen and manganese to a typical ASTM A297 grade of stainless steel. To date, a few hundred test castings have been installed in iron ore pellet plants worldwide. Many of these test castings have already experienced a year or more of operation with good results.INTRODUCTION Cast stainless steels (ASTM A297 and similar) are a main constituent used in the construction of iron ore pelletizing equipment. A typical straight grate pelletizing machine would contain upwards of 160,000lbs of ASTM A297 Grade HH castings. With a typical casting lasting only two to four years, and a casting costing around $35USD, it is easy to see that the castings are a main contributor to the overall cost of producing the pellets. Grade HH and HI (see chemical composition listed below) became the “go to” materials in the 1960’s and very few changes have been made to this day (the exception being plants that switched to flux pellet production in the 1980’s)."

"The Langmuir model has been widely used for the coal-methane sorption process via an isothermal test. However, even though the temperature-dependent Langmuir model were recognized theoretically and experimentally, the quantitative relationship between the Langmuir’s constants (a & b) and temperature have not been clarified and confirmed by lab test data. This paper collects 158 methane-coal sorption data under different temperatures, which apply the Langmuir model to consider the relationship between Langmuir’s constants (a & b) and temperature (see APPENDIX I). Even though the Langmuir model cannot be used to show the physical state of methane adsorption on coal, it is widely used because of its simplicity and the reasonable explanation of its parameters (a & b). The results from these published isothermal tests confirm that 1) there is no consistent relationship between Langmuir’s constant-a and temperature; 2) the Langmuir model is a temperature-dependent model, and the temperature-dependent feature is mainly shown by the relationship between Langmuir’s constant-b and temperature; 3) The relationship between Langmuir’s constant-b and temperature can be described by both the exponential and linear relationship with dried coal. This paper provides a database for temperature-dependent Langmuir’s model, which can be used for reservoir simulation of coalbed methane reservoir, coal seam degasification modeling for underground coal mines considering the heating effect induced by geotherm and heat injection (via hot water, hot steam, ultrasonic, etc.). INTRODUCTION The isothermal test for gas sorption on coal is one of the fundamental tests in Coalbed Methane (CBM) recovery fields, such as underground coal mine methane degasification, CBM gas-in-place estimation, and carbon dioxide sequestration in un-minable coal seams. Generally, two methods, volumetric and gravimetric, are employed to obtain isothermal data (Bush, A. & Gensterblum, Y., 2012). Based on these two approaches, a series of commercial and self-assembled instruments are built and several calculation methods are used to obtain isothermal data (Bush, A. & Gensterblum, Y., 2012, Gasparik, K., 2014; Goodman, A. L., et al, 2004; Zhang, L., et al, 2013). In the post-processing stage, many models are provided to analyze isothermal data in order to understand the storage mechanism of gas in coal. Common models include the Langmuir model (and its extended forms), the pore-filling model, multilayer adsorption model (BET), and the Gibbs’ model. The coal industry in the United States has undergone significant economic changes during the past six years. The price of coal remained relatively constant from 1950 to 1969 (See Figures 1 and 2). Steam coal prices tripled and metallurgical coal prices doubled from 1969 to 1974. This price structure has created a new economic environment for coal preparation. Contributing factors to these price trends include: ? Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 ? Mid-East oil embargo of 1973 ? United Mine Workers of America contract agreements ? Productivity decrease (tons per man-day basis) ? Environmental Protection Agency regulations The increased value of coal justifies additional capital investment in cleaning facilities to optimize yield. Current trends include recovery of existing slurry ponds and recleaning of refuse. Coal preparation plant product yield and quality must be evaluated in terms of the amount of capital expended and cost of operation. Therefore, it is advantageous to optimize the plant product based on clean coal selling price and rate of return on investment.

One of the critical parameters of any automated coal mining system is the ability to only cut coal and not the rock / waste surrounding it. To do this the system must be able to detect where the coal-rock/ waste interface is. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating a new approach to vibrational coal interface detection (CID) by utilizing an adaptive signal discrimination (ASD) system to perform feature extraction and classification of complex vibrational signals. Accelerometers, geophones, and piezoelectric films are mounted on mining machines and/or strata and are used to monitor vibrations produced during mining operations. Selected data are digitized and the ASD system is trained on known types of vibrations (e.g., "cutting coal" and "starting to cut roof"). A signal classifier is then generated which can be used to identify unknown waveforms. The ASD system can be retrained if mining conditions change significantly.
