Introduction The separation of minerals from complex sulfide ores by flotation requires careful control of the surface chemical behaviors of the minerals constituting the ores. When the minerals in the ore are finely disseminated, extremely fine grinding is needed to liberate the minerals. Fine grinding is not only an energy-intensive operation, but also influences the flotation behaviors of liberated minerals. Steel balls are commonly used for grinding. Galvanic interactions occur not only between sulfide minerals and grinding media but also among the different sulfide minerals themselves. The electrochemical characteristics of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite when they are independently coupled with steel grinding media and the relevance of these characteristics to the flotation behavior of these minerals have been exten¬sively studied (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992: Li and Iwasaki, 1992). These studies dealt with reactions in two electrode combinations, simulating mineral-grinding medium and mineral-mineral interactions. In practice, however, it is more common to involve more than one sulfide mineral. In a study of a pyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system, Pozzo et al. (1989) provided evidence that a mineral having an intermediate potential could behave differently, depending on the condi¬tion of galvanic contact. This investigation was undertaken to study a chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system to gain better in¬sight into the mechanism of multiple galvanic interactions. A three-electrode system was chosen to simulate a typical copper sulfide ore. The sulfide minerals were represented by chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The grinding medium was rep¬resented by mild steel. The nature of galvanic interactions involving these minerals and grinding medium in an oxygen atmosphere was investigated in a three-electrode combina¬tion, and an attempt was made to relate the laboratory flotation results of pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ores. Possible implications to the differential flotation of complex sulfide ores are discussed. Key words: Electrochemistry, Flotation, Sulfide ores Experimental The pyrrhotite (57.74% Fe, 0.09% Cu, 4.84% Ni and 36.54% S) sample was obtained from Falconbridge Ltd.'s Strathcona mine, Ontario, Canada, and the chalcopyrite (26.00% Cu, 28.57% Fe, 0.05% Ni and 31.52% S) sample came from Transvaal, South Africa. Mild steel (AISI 1020, 0.2% C) was chosen to represent grinding media. A conventional three-electrode cell was used in the elec¬trochemical measurements. The working, counter and refer¬ence electrodes were, respectively, sulfide minerals or mild steel, graphite rod and saturated calomel electrode (SCE, 0.245 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). The exposed areas of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium electrodes were approximately the same (0.17 to 0.19 cm2). The preparation methods of working electrodes, the reagents used, the experi¬mental procedures and the instrumentation were the same as those described previously (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992). Rest potentials of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and mild steel were measured individually in 0.05-M sodium sulfate solu¬tions. Combination potentials and galvanic currents of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium were measured in short-circuited two- and three-electrode systems. With the depletion of easy-to-treat phosphate resources, low quality phosphate ores with high carbonates, particularly dolomite impurities have to be mined to meet the agricultural demand because of the continued growth of world population. The separation of dolomite from phosphate has been recognized as one of the most difficult subjects in mineral processing due to the similarities in their physical and chemical properties. Flotation is considered the most important approach for beneficiating both easy-to-treat and high impurity phosphate resources. There is no doubt that the development of reagents is the key for achieving satisfactory separation performance through flotation process. In order to separate dolomite from phosphate, Arr-Maz Custom Chemicals has made great efforts in developing flotation reagents for removal of carbonates from phosphate ores of different origins worldwide. This paper describes some flotation reagents and processes for the separation of dolomite or/and calcite impurities from phosphate in the ores from different locations.

Although it is apparent that porphyry copper deposits may have formed in the Andean orogen from Permian time onward, commercial deposits thus far developed appear to have Cenozoic ages only. Following Chilean useage, the porphyry deposits are divided into either: (a) a stockwork, or (b) a tourmaline breccia model. Stockwork type deposits tend to occur on major strike-slip structures which may be either transcurrent or transverse faults related to plate movements, while the tourmaline breccia type may more frequently form independently of regional faults. Stockwork types may be conjugate fractures that intersect and ramify as a network of veins and veinlets, cutting altered rock, and genetically related to a major regional fault, or in other cases they may reflect the intersection of two large fault structures. Circular fracture patterns may more rarely occur in stockwork deposits in response to a specific intrusive. Tourmaline breccia types are characterized by circular and radial fractures genetically connected in some way with tourmaline breccia pipe development or an intrusive piercement that preceded it. Each structural model contains mineralized intrusive8 which have a close time-space relationship to ore and in each model, mineral paragenesis is similar, regardless of age or location in the plate. Also, each model contains the same type of alterntion halos (phyllic, argillic, prophllitic) as are developed in intru- sive centers in porphyry copper deposits found in North America. The potassic zone is exposed best in the older deposits. Examples of each type of deposit are illustrated, demonstrating the feature evolved.

A geologic investigation of mineral resources in South Carolina first began in 1825 when the General Assembly authorized Lardner Vanuxen to conduct a "Geological and Mineralogical Survey of South Carolina." Vanuxen, South Carolina's first State Geologist, reported in 1826 on the limestones (marble) of the Piedmont which during those early years, were burned in many shall, scattered kilns in the region wherever suitable raw material was available. He also mentioned the possibility of using marl from the Atlantic Coastal Plain province for direct application and enrichment to the soil. Since before the year 1844 industrial minerals in South Carolina have been commercially produced literally from A to Z, asbestos to zircon. The first pub¬lished reports of actual commercial production, not just an occurrence, are referenced in Table 1 for 33 known industrial minerals and rocks in South Carolina. Known or suspected occurrences of undeveloped non-metallic mineral resources in South Carolina await future verification by geologic mapping, sampling (including coring), possible beneficiation, and market analysis. These industrial minerals and rocks include, but are not limited to, special, clay minerals (e.g. bentonitic clays, zeolites and others), sillimanite, argillite (lightweight aggregate), kaolin (alumina) and marl (underground storage and tunneling medium). In addition other non-metallic minerals, once mined but still worthy of reconsideration, include topaz (industrial), heavy minerals, barite, feldspar, and monazite. Finally, possibilities for new reserves, as an expansion of existing mine output, might develop for fuller's earth, limestone (lime), sericite (finely divided mica), vermiculite, kaolin (paper coating and filling, other filler), and metallurgical gravel. Official South Carolina data from the U. S. Bureau of Mines for 1974 indicated a total value of mineral production of $105.2 million. The primary limiting factor for hoisting capacity from great depths is the self-weight of steel wire ropes. Steel wire ropes are very suitable for mine hoisting due to their high strength and durability, but have the negative characteristic of a low strength/weight ratio. Also, as hoisting depths increase, the service life of steel wire ropes decreases due to the higher stresses and physical effects on the ropes. The significantly higher strength/weight ratio of synthetic ropes offers the primary advantage of hoisting a larger payload with a similar size rope and hoisting plant. The beneficial properties of synthetic ropes could be used to improve the overall economics of deep underground mining both for new deep shaft projects and for existing mining operations expanding to deeper orebodies. A research and development program has been initiated to evaluate the suitability of a fully synthetic rope for the mine hoisting application.

The valuable Maximum Utilization Factor (MUF) concept has been extended to other rotating excavators beyond stripping shovels and draglines. In this concept the boom reach and bucket capacity are multiplied to get an MUF, then normalized by dividing by the equipment weight. Statistical analyses were applied to the remaining shovels (hydraulic and cable), draglines, and backhoes. Positive correlations were found. Stripping shovels and draglines were also re-examined. The results provide an estimate of equipment diggability and encourage versatility by the interchange of the boom and the bucket. The concept further clarifies the existing equipment classification by delineating general excavating, loading, and stripping kinds. The results also forecast trends, and noted innovative advances and possible retrogression. Extension to other boom excavators, such as front-end loaders is recommended. The MUF concept provides one of the few indices of gross external characteristics available to the engineer-user of equipment.

Lignite is a kind of easy-to-slime and low rank coal. It is hard to be separated by the conventional wet coal beneficiation technologies. Meanwhile, in recent decades, a large amount of fine coal (-6 mm) is generated as the mechanized mining technology has been progressively deployed in coal sector, which causes a great difficult for lignite beneficiation and upgrading due to lack of efficient technology available. In this paper, a vibrated gas-fluidized bed was used to separate the -6 mm fine lignite particles. Separation experiments of -6+3 mm and -3+1 mm lignite were carried out in a laboratory-scale vibrated gas-fluidized bed. The effects of several parameters including the superficial air velocity, vibration intensity, bed height and exterior moisture content on the separation performance were experimentally studied. The results show that the optimal separation performance was achieved when the superficial air velocity is 0.3, the vibration intensity is 1.4, the bed height is 50 mm, the exterior moisture content is below 4% (-6+3 mm) and 2% (-3+1 mm). And the probably error E values of -6+3 mm and -3+1 mm size fraction of lignite are 0.202 and 0.225 respectively. The results indicate that a vibrated gas-fluidized bed can provide an effective solution for -6 mm lignite separation.

The Ortiz Mine is operated by Gold Fields Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Consolidated Gold Fields Ltd., one of the world's major gold producers. The Ortiz Mine is Gold Fields only heap leaching facility as well as being their first operating mine in the U.S.A. The hydrometallurgical processes utilized for recovery of gold and silver at Ortiz are discussed along with the several practical changes in operation adopted since start-up. Included are heap leaching by cyanidation, concentration of values on activated carbon, desorption, and the final electrowinning steps prior to shipment. Construction costs and pertinent technical data are shown.

The Green Mountain Copper Prospect is an unusual stratiform base metal occurrence located in the California Foothills Copper-Zinc Belt. Mined for rich secondary oxide-carbonate ores since 1863, the first serious exploration of the primary ores was in the 1970's. Unlike typical volcanogenic deposits of the district, stratigraphy consists of greywackes overlain (?) or intruded by an intermediate to felsic volcanic unit. Shales and siltstones overlie the volcanic unit. Massive pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur at the top of the volcanic unit. Later intrusion and deformation metamorphosed the sequence and created a SW plunging anticline. Characteristic magnetic and electrical geophysical signatures are present and reviewed.

In April 1975 Kaiser Steel Corporation and the United States' Department of Energy entered into a cost-sharing agreement for the demonstration of shield-type longwall supports on three consecutive longwall panels at Kaiser's York Canyon' Mine in New Mexico. Under this agreement the Department of Energy supplied 117 Hemscheidt 320 HSL caliper-type shield supports and hydraulic pumps for the duration of the demonstration. The purpose of the demonstration was to educate the U.S. coal mining industry as to the benefits in production, productivity, health and safety, and increased coal extraction afforded by shield-type longwall mining systems and to provide the industry with a working model. A detailed description of this demonstration is given in U.S. Department of Energy Publication No. DOE/ET/12530-T1, entitled "Demonstration of Shield-Type Longwall Supports at York Canyon Mine of Kaiser Steel Corporation," hereafter referred to as the York Canyon Report.

A column flotation system was designed to conduct release analyses of a very finely disseminated, stratiform, copper ore from the Denali Copper Prospect, Alaska. Chalcopyrite is finely disseminated in a carbonate matrix and pyrite is disseminated in both the chalcopyrite and gangue, requiring grinding to 20 microns for adequate liberation. A 25 mm x 2.4 m glass flotation column was designed. The ore and its flotation tailings were repeatedly floated to obtain a rougher concentrate, which was repeatedly floated to produce release fractions. These were analyzed for copper, iron calcium and magnesium. Release curves were plotted. The procedure was replicated at each of two grinds; 99% and 88% passing 37 microns (400 mesh), and should find application for flotation characterization and process selection. Bond grindability work was also conducted.

An analysis was conducted to determine the effects of blasting on slope stability and downstream comminution processes. To investigate these effects, the extent of blast-induced rock damage and the magnitude of induced stress were examined. This analysis showed that damage may extend up to 500 meters (1MPa, tensile strength) in the rock mass, a distance that is sufficient to impact the pit-scale slope over the long term. In addition, the damage zone was calculated using the reasonable assumption that compressive waves are the primary agent in microfracturing during blast fragmentation. The calculated damage zone ? up to 5.6 meters (30MPa, 30% of the compressive strength) ? indicates that microfracturing can occur throughout the entire rock mass in the blasting area. Finally, an economic analysis was conducted by comparing two reasonably assumed blasts in a copper mine. The change in energy required for crushing and grinding was demonstrated using Bond?s law after increasing the blast energy from 180kcal/t to 350kcal/t. A total cost saving of 13.3% ($9.4M) was achieved with the increase. An optimal blast design should consider both slope stability (safety) and downstream comminution energy (production).

"China is rich in tungsten resource, but they are mainly associated minerals. The similar flotability of scheelite, fluorite, and calcite resulted in the difficult separation by flotation. This work summarized the current situation and the development of flotation reagents, technological process, and mineral processing equipments in China. Fatty acid served as the collector and water glass was the depressant to expand the flotability differences in traditional flotation technology. However the water glass inevitably influenced the flotation of tungsten minerals to a large extend, and the suppressed fluorite was difficult to recover by flotation. Abundant water glass lead to the bad settleability of the tailings and the tail water was difficult to circulate, resulted in serious environmental problems. Recent study proved that the selectivity of benzene armour hydroxyl oxime acid (BAHA) salts was adequate for the separation of tungsten minerals from fluorite, calcite and most silicate minerals without any depressant. By this way, sodium silicate was canceled completely in tungsten flotation, greatly improving the recovery of tungsten and the environmental problems caused by tail water treatment would be solved fundamentally. TUNGSTEN RESOURCES AND DISTRIBUTION IN CHINA China is rich in tungsten resources and the proved reserves accounted for 60% of the world's reserves [1]. However the wolframite has been dried up and the scheelite resources had become the main resource of the tungsten metal. Table 1 showed the most large and superlarge scheelite deposits in China. China has more than 40 large and superlarge scheelite deposits and the total metallic deserves is more than 3 million ton [2]. But most of the deposits were low-grade and the associated relationship was complicated. For example, scheelite was usually associated with wolframite, molybonite, bismuthinite, pyrite, fluorite, and calcite in Shizhuyuan and Yaogangxian mine."

Visible-wavelength and near-infrared multispectral image cubes for the Animas River Watershed from Hermosa, Colorado to the headwaters at Animas Forks, Colorado were acquired on June 18, 1996 using the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's AVIRIS (Airborne Visible and InfraRed Imaging Spectrometer) instrument (Green et al., 1998). These image cubes have been analyzed using the USGS Tetracorder V3.4 implementation (Clark et al., 1995), an expert system which utilizes a database of more than 300 laboratory spectra of endmember minerals and mineral mixtures to generate maps of mineralogy, vegetation coverage, and other material distributions. Major iron-bearing, clay, carbonate, and other minerals were identified along with several minerals associated with acid-generating hydrothermal systems including pyrite, jarosite, alunite and goethite. Additionally, distributions of alkaline minerals such as calcite and chlorite indicate a relation between acid- buffering assemblages and stream geochemistry within the watershed.

The subsequent need for water, coupled with San Diego’s natural attractiveness, has led to significant population increases and the need for the construction of even more tunnels. This paper will provide a historical summary of the progression of mines, tunnels and trenchless technology construction projects that contributed to the advance of current technology, feasibility, and constructability. A bibliography of relevant reports and data is included.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a method for mine planners and engineers to evaluate on a conceptual basis if a shaft or a ramp is most suited for their particular underground access requirements. Mine planners and engineers are often raced with the decision of choosing which method of underground access is best suited for their particular requirement. Underground access can be provided by a shaft, ramp, adit, or slope for either exploration and/or actual production operations. This paper will focus on the construction cost and schedule differences between sinking a shaft and excavating a ramp which are currently the most typical access alternatives used in the western United States. It would be wrong to state that one method is superior to the other in every case. There are many variables to be addressed, and the degree of sensitivity of each of them will eventually dictate which method is the most suited to the particular circumstances. This paper compares the construction cost and schedule or sinking a shaft to excavating a ramp at different depths given different ground and hydrological conditions. This comparison provides mine planners with "rules or thumb" that may be applied to the access selection process.

The combined study of ground water regime and rock deformations has resulted in the theoretical substantiation of the common principles for analysis of the hydrodynamic and geomechanical processes Within the scope of unique scientific direction -hydrogeomechanics (Mironenko and Shestakov, 1974). The hydrogeomechanical models are widely used now for the analysis and forecasting the extremely important processes connected with the safe and efficient mining operations, as well as with the protection of geological medium. Among these processes are: -deformations of the open-pit slopes and spoil dumps; -consolidation of rocks due to the ground-water pressure drop; -water-end-rock material inrush into mine workings caused by deformations of the undermined rock mass; -geodynamical processes due to the changes in ground water regime; -artificial hydrofracturing in rocks; -transformations of clay linings under the tailing ponds and other technical water basins.

"The overall goal of this study is to develop a suitable flow sheet to extract rare earth elements (REEs) from coal ash. A total of 14 coal samples of different ranks were examined for REE concentration, and an anthracite coal sample with the highest REE concentration of more than 700 ppm in the coal ash was selected for REE extraction tests. This paper reports on the results of the experimental program completed in the first part of the study, which included hightemperature leaching with nitric acid followed by solvent extraction tests using various organic extractants, namely, tributyl phosphate, Cyanex 572, di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and their combinations. A 4×2×2 experimental design was used to conduct a total of 32 high-temperature leaching tests by varying acid molarity at four levels, solids content at two levels and leaching time at two levels. The highest recovery rates of 90 percent for light rare earth elements (LREEs) and 94 percent for heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) were obtained from the optimum leaching test conditions while maintaining impurity recovery to the leachate at less than 40 percent. D2EHPA was found to be the best extractant in this solvent extraction test series, providing an REE recovery rate of nearly 99 percent.IntroductionGlobal demand for rare earth elements (REEs) and other strategic metals is increasing rapidly due to their use in a variety of advanced technological applications, with more than 100 kt of rare earth oxides used worldwide on an annual basis. The United States has less than 10 percent of the world reserves of REE mineral deposits, and in 2013 imported more than 60 percent of its rare earth oxides from other countries, mainly China (United States Geological Survey, 2017). China’s institution of export quotas has significantly reduced supply to the United States, raising the urgency of finding new ways of producing REEs and/ or substitutes. Coal combustion byproducts, which are usually discarded as waste materials, are known to contain REEs in low concentrations that could be extracted with a suitable process flow sheet. This may be a worthwhile route to pursue, considering the short supply of rare earth minerals and the abundance of coal ash in thousands of ash ponds in the United States. More than 110 Mt of coal combustion byproducts are produced annually in the process of satisfying the country’s need for electricity (American Coal Ash Association, 2016), and less than 50 percent of these byproducts are being successfully used in various applications, with the remainder dumped as waste materials in landfills and ash ponds."

A case study of a systematic approach to grinding circuit steady-state optimization is presented. After overall review of the flowsheet, two circuits were prepared for detailed testing. Functional performance analysis was chosen as the primary modelling system, and on this basis a quality assurance program for data gathering was implemented. A number of circuit design and operating variables were experimented with statistical analysis of plant test results revealed relationships previously unquantifiable by any other modelling technique. Improvements in classification system and mill grinding efficiencies were demonstrated and significant energy cost savings thus realized.

INTRODUCTION Background and Objectives Underground coal mining is a vital component of West Virginia's economy. However adverse environmental effects including ground subsidence and aquifer dewatering are often associated with such mining activities. Many families in northern West Virginia still rely on private water wells and springs for domestic water needs. In such areas where underground coal extraction and land subsidence have occurred, a disruption of the ground water flow system commonly exists with subsequent drainage of water to lower levels that may extent as deep as the mine workings; this causes loss of water supplies to landowners and represents a nuisance to mining companies 2 This report represents a summary of an M. S. thesis project in geology at West Virginia University by the senior author (3). The intent for this study was to document the effects of underground coal removal on ground water levels at selected mine sites in northern West Virginia, as observed from water wells, springs, and streams. This research should be useful to coal companies and regulatory agencies and aid in recommendations of future water well locations and specifications in areas of existing or proposed underground coal mines.
