In 1997, 92.3% or 235.7 Mt (259.8 million st) of coal produced in Wyoming came from the Wyodak coal zone in the eastern Powder River coalfield. The mined portions of the zone consist of one to three beds of coal with an aggregate thickness between 15 and 33.5 m (50 and 110 ft). The thickest expression is 61 m (200 ft). The delivered coal from this zone averages 0.33% sulfur, 5.12% ash and 19.98 MJ/kg (8,590 Btu/lb.). This coal zone occurs at or near the top of the Paleocene Fort Union Formation, which is overlain by the Eocene Wasatch Formation. There is also production from two coalbeds in the lower portion of the Wasatch at the southern end of the basin. Production of coalbed methane derived from the Wyodak coal zone is currently an estimated 289 Mm3/a (10.2 billion cu ft/year). This production is occurring west and downdip from the coal mines and is increasing each year.

Steel consumption forms a significant part of the operating cost of a minerals processing plant. An estimated one-quarter billion kilograms of steel in the United States and over one-half billion kilograms in the world are consumed each year in wet grinding alone. The depletion of ore grades and the necessity of finer grinding of abrasive ores are expected to increase the steel consumption even higher. Through continued research and development by the mining industry and the suppliers of steel products several remedies to reduce steel consumption have evolved. This paper critically reviews the mechanisms involved in steel wear, and currently available methods, materials and operating conditions for reducing steel consumption. Particular attention is given to liner design modifications and substitution of steel liners with rubber liners.

According to accident statistics (l, 2), roof fall accidents occur quite frequently at the intersections of underground? openings and account for up to 30% of the roof fall fatalities. But this figure will certainly go up considerably if roof falls not associated with any fatal accident are included in the analysis. Unfortunately, nonfatal roof falls are seldom documented. In the underground coal mines, there are two types of entry intersections. One is the three-way (V type) and the other is the four-way (T type) intersections. A three-way intersection occurs whenever the mainline track haulageway turns at an angle into a section haulageway. The four-way intersections by far the most common type in the U.S. under-ground coal mines are formed by the intersections of two entries which are oriented perpendicular to each other or by the intersections of entries and crosscuts. However, crosscuts are frequently driven at an angle to the entry to facilitate machine movements. The four-way intersections formed by this method of crosscut development are angled. At the intersection of two underground openings, the diagonal roof span is wider than the width of each individual opening. This is one of the major reasons why roof falls occur more likely at the intersections than in the entry between pillars. Consequently, special intersection support plans are usually employed (Figs. 1 and 2) for intersections. The most popular practices are to decrease roof bolt spacing 1 ft. less than or to increase roof bolt length 1 to 2 ft. longer than those employed in the entry between pillars (3). The increase in bolt length or decrease in bolt spacing can be applied to all of the bolts in the intersection or employed only for the strategically located bolts depending on the individual mine practices. These rather generalized practices seems to be adequate for some areas but in many cases inadequate for others. Occasionally, the neighboring two lines of chain pillars are staggered such that the crosscuts in one row of chain pillars face the centers of the chain pillars in the neigh-boring rows. This layout forms T-type three-way intersections which are also inadequate for most weak roofs (3, 4). A study was therefore initiated to develop special techniques for intersection supports. The first phase of the study was the analysis of the stress fields for the underground entry intersections. A three-dimensional stress analysis was necessary for this purpose. Unfortunately, the three-dimensional problems of complicated boundary conditions are beyond the existing analytical methods. The three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) was therefore employed in this study. In the analysis, square pillars of 40 feet wide and an entry height of 8 feet were assumed while entry widths varied at 14, 20 and 26 feet. This model was selected to simulate the mine where roof falls data were collected. The second phase of the study was the collection of field data. The sizes of the roof falls including heights, lengths and widths were collected and analyzed. In the third phase study, the results of the first and second phases were compared and discussed. The analysis of field data revealed an arching zone within which roof falls occurred. The arching zone above an entry obtained empirically was compared with the calculated stress contours. Assuming that the bolts must be anchored in the rock strata outside the arching zone, the preferable systems of bolting were proposed. Also the amount of pretension required to inhibit sliding between layers was discussed.

Artificial sulphides have been produced on the surfaces of heavy metal-oxide, minerals at elevated temperatures (1) and these sulphides gave consistently similar flotation characteristics as the respective natural sulphides. In the case of tin, the only natural tin sulphide known is herzembergite (SnS) which is found only in minor quantities, and its flotation behavior is not known. Balberyszki, Dorenfeld, and Carmi reported (2) tests with artificial tin oxide and pure cassiterite treated with hydrogen sulphide at temperatures above 750oc. They confirmed that the product could be floated in acid pulps. However, iron sulphides derived from pyrite, limonite, and hematite which are generally the major impurities in tin bearing ores could not be separated from tin sulphides under the conditions used by previous investigators. As a practical matter, if complex tin ores or complex low grade tin concentrates are to be treated by this process, it is necessary to be able to separate sulphidized cassiterite from other sulphidized minerals in the feed. The major metallic minerals, by weight, in complex tin ores are the iron minerals--pyrite, hematite, limonite, magnetite and pyrrhotite. These minerals become (or remain) sulphidized during the sulphidization process.

The term sustainable development shortly appeared in international use in the run of UNO Environmental Protection Conference held in Rio de Janeim in 1992, bears the concept, that evolution process ( associated either with a region or society) should provide mutual interests concern in three aspects - environmental, economic and social ones, admitting as well the fact , that environmental protection should become an integral part of each process and cannot be regarded separately. In this connection it seems quite reasonable to employ the principal of sustainable development, while creating the model of industrial mastering the territory constraint lands viewing their future, for a example, in rich mineral deposit's development. In Kuznetsk coal basin in Russia ( west Siberia) the development of a big coal deposit Erunakovsky is now being underway. The major part of coal will be mined with open cast method, resulting the number of local environmental adverse impacts' occurrence. In such a situation mastering of sustainable development model is given the top priority, demonstrating the essential result of its application in a form of possibility to define the best correlation between economically expedient and environmentally tolerable loads during coal mining. The given paper is an attempt to work out the main principals to approach the creation of sustainable development model in regard of the definite region case. To simplify the presentation of employed approach's main idea, the given below accepts as its component only one of many actually existing environmental profiles, that define mining pro- cess impact on environmental situation -the size of infringed (de- graded) lithosphere surface. Basically, the actually existed correlation between spheres. grounding the model of sustainable development - economic, environmental and social- is given in a form of nomogram under Fig.1. Separation of geochemical anomalies from the background using various methods for identifying areas of higher mineral potential is a critical first step in Greenfield and Brownfield programs. There are several methods for differentiating anomalous regions from the background. The U-spatial statistics is an effective technique that provides the opportunity of reaching this goal by considering the geochemical sample locations in the separation of geochemical anomalies. In this study, a developed form of the U-spatial statistics method is introduced, which not only considers the existence of anisotropic spatial variations in input data but also reduces the computational (CPU) time. While the previous method is based on the isotropic assumption in the study area and a set of search windows at different times, here, the geochemical anomaly is determined by pasting only one ellipsoid window, effectively combining the flexibility of the U-spatial statistics method with the advantages of geostatistical approaches. This paper compares various approaches (the previous and developed version of the U-spatial statistics method, concentrationarea (C–A) fractal model, and probability diagram modeling) for the separation of anomalous areas in the presence of heterogeneous spatial variations. This is done with an application to a Baghqloom porphyry copper deposit located in southeastern Iran. The high potential areas identified via different approaches show an anomalous region in central parts of the Baghqloom area, which partially coincides with an intense potassic alteration area. Compared to other methods, our algorithm separated the high potential areas at a greater spatial resolution.

The study investigates the influence of water migration on the fluidity of fresh cemented paste backfill (CPB) with and without flocculant under variable shear rates. The research utilizes nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), rheological tests, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to analyze water migration, rheological properties, and microstructure evolution. The findings reveal that water migrates to more stable states as shear rate increases, and the addition of flocculant enhances water migration and increases shear stress and apparent viscosity. The study establishes relationships between water content and rheological parameters, providing insights into the flow characteristics of fresh CPB for pipeline transportation.

Peabody Coal Company is the nation's largest producer of coal and is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1978 Peabody divisionalized its operations to establish more responsive and effective mine management. Peabody Coal Company's Arizona Division operates two large surface mines, the Black Mesa and Kayenta Mines. Both are located in northeastern Arizona, approximately 30 miles from Kayenta, Arizona, on the Navajo and Hopi Indian Reservations. The Black Mesa Mine produces 4 to 5 million tons of coal per year and the Kayenta Mine produces 7 to 8 million tons per year. Coal from the Black Mesa Mine is transported 274 miles by coal slurry pipeline to the Mohave Generating Plant located on the Nevada/Arizona border at Bullhead City, Arizona. This plant is jointly owned by Southern California Edison, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Nevada Power Company and Salt River Project Agriculture Improvement and Power District.

And, if there is enough growth in the moss and lichens and arctic grass to support a caribou herd, the "tender tundra" can heal after it has been disturbed by mining. Another myth is that Alaska is an ice box. Actually, many areas In the state---particularly the Interior---have a high agricultural potential. Nevertheless, the fact remains: whether it is reclaimed by advancing the productivity from forest to agriculture or is allowed to remain a wild-life habitat, Alaskan land will revegetate. Reseeding speeds reclamation, but left to nature, native species will reclaim the land whether it was disturbed by forest fires, roads, villages, or mining. In fact, it is impossible to find many of the old gold mining camps.

In 1986, Gold Fields began negotiations with a large Nevada electrical power utility to supply power for its Chimney Creek Mine In northern Nevada. After the long negotiations reached an impass over various costs associated with the power line, a decision was made by Gold Fields to generate its own power. Self-generation is not uncommon overseas, but it is rare for any but very large or very small operations in the United States. Surprisingly, under certain conditions a mine can generate its own power profitably and Gold Fields has found that the associated operating and maintenance problems are minimal. The following report details what factors went into this decision and how it works. Hopefully, it can serve as a guideline for those who may find themselves in a similar position.

Recent EPRI research on utilities? likely strategies to reduce sulfur emissions differs sharply from policy analyses showing all- switching or all-scrubbing choices. Energy Ventures Analysis, with Stearns-Catalytic and A. T. Kearney, estimated sulfur-removal costs for scrubbing or switching at virtually all affected plants in the 31 Eastern States. Cost tradeoffs occur between $30 and $40-plus per ton FOB mine in Central Appalachia ($33-44-plus per tonne). 1/2 to 3/4 of total sulfur reductions comes from scrubbing, whose costs act as a cap on low-sulfur coal prices. In a severe environmental scenario, low- sulfur coal demand evaporates, replaced by very low-sulfur (0.7%) coal demand. Additional findings and implications of EPRI coal supply and market studies will be reviewed.

"Advanced data acquisition and process modelling technology provides online data and decision support about different aspects of the resource extraction process. Real-time approaches have recently been applied to utilize the value of this information for improved production control in mineral resource extraction in different operational set ups including coal, polymetallic ore and gold deposits. The key concept of these approaches promotes the change in paradigm from discontinuous intermittent process monitoring to a continuous process and quality management system in the resource extraction process. The framework includes a real-time feedback control loop that rapidly links online material characteristics data acquired during extraction at the mining face, during material handling and processing with a sequentially up-datable resource model. This will allow near real-time optimization of decisions related to long-term planning, short-term sequencing and production control. The contribution reviews recent developments in the three main constituents sensor based material characterisation, rapid updating of grade control models and simulation based optimization for improved production control. Technological readiness is assessed and critical gaps for further technology development are identified. The value added is illustrated by means of selected case studies. INTRODUCTION With the depletion of known and established mineral reserves, the decrease in head grades and the continuing demand of mineral raw materials by the modern society, future exploitation will move towards extraction of deposits under geologically more complex conditions. Complex deposits are characterized by a low continuity in grade, presence of deleterious elements such as arsenic and high irregularity in the geometry of the ore boundaries. The profitable exploitation of such deposits becomes significantly more challenging. To be able to better utilize such unconventional mineral resources of the future, smart autonomous mining systems are needed, which integrate local exploration of spatially varying material characteristics in–situ and have the ability to follow and extract the pay zones in the ore body while minimizing dilution (Buxton and Benndorf, 2013). The main barriers to overcome for the successful economic exploitation are: • effective grade control which will maximize resource potential along the whole value chain, • minimization of handling zero-value material introduced by dilution, thus • reducing unnecessary expenditure of energy and financial resources and • management and control of the geological uncertainty due to limited information available,"

Autogenous grinding, broadly defined as the self-comminution of ore in a cylindrical tumbling mill without using auxiliary grinding media, was first applied in the early thirties in the so-called Hadsel mills (Figure 1) mainly used in gold mines on the U.S. West Coast. A number of these mills were built in sizes of 20 to 24 ft. in diameter and five-six feet in length but were later abandoned because of operating and maintenance problems. Further development of autogenous grinding led to the Hardinge wet grinding mill (Figure 2), the Aerofall dry grinding mill and others. A tabulation of all known autogenous and semi-autogenous installations around the world was sent recently to the authors by Hr. G. J. Kushner of the Koppers Mineral Processing Division. In the size range of 24 to 32-ft. in diameter, it lists a total of thirty mills used in the processing of copper ores. An additional 120 units are listed in the same size range for the processing of iron ores and other minerals. The largest mills in existence are 36-ft. dia X 15-ft. long mills in Minnesota, powered by 12,000 hp. motors and used in taconite beneficiation. It is indicative of the phenomenal growth of this technology that none of the above one hundred and fifty mills was in operation prior to 1964.

MDL Rock Lasers has undertaken successful mapping trials of abandoned mine workings using its underground cavity scanning system. The work was being performed for Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), Australia's largest gold producer. MDL Rock Lasers supplies underground surveying systems to the mining and quarrying industry KCGM's Fimiston Super Pit, located in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, is Australia's largest open-pit gold operation. Fimiston's final pit design is expected to be 3.7 km (2.3 miles) long, 1.5 km (0.9-miles ) wide and 540 m (1,770 ft) deep. During the early days of Australian mining, underground operations were labor intensive. Mining was selective and generally narrow stopes were mostly backfilled. Improved processing technology and mine mechanization during the 1970s and 1980s has permitted larger scale operations to adopt less selective underground-stope operations. The "super pit" concept was a logical step for mining companies working toward economies of scale. However, the industry recognized that there was no precedent for excavating a 500-m- (1,640-ft-) deep open pit through ground previously affected by old workings. To appreciate the geotechnical challenge facing KCGM, it is necessary to consider that under the pro¬posed area at the open pit, stoping reached a level of 1 km (0.6 miles) and was supported by more than 2,000 km (1,240 miles) of development headings. The company was fortunate because plans were available for the Golden Mile underground operations. The existing plans were interpreted by the mine's geotechnical team and computer models were constructed of the underground workings. These models can be imported into three-dimensional mine planning packages, such as the Vulcan's Unix-based software, Envisage, to assist analysis and design. This prior knowledge of the workings provided the focus for investigating and confirming ground conditions using probe drilling. After several iterations of drilling, followed by detailed analysis, several decisions were made relating to the nature of the ground and the mining approach to be taken. It was recognized that the stope models were not perfect due to hu¬man error, lack of original survey information and progressive deterioration in ground conditions. It also became apparent that the sole reliance on probe drilling was inefficient in terms of time and quality of information. This was particularly true in complex areas where stopes are in close proximity. A major concern was the presence of open stopes (voids). In many cases, stopes consist of combinations of filled and void sections. The condition of pillars within these underground workings is extremely important. In time, pillars collapse and voids will propagate in upward and lateral directions. So systems needed to be developed that allowed rapid and accurate verification of ground conditions. KCGM was introduced to MDL Rock Lasers while investigating technology for underground mining. The two companies decided to use the C-ALS, MDL Rock Laser's underground laser, cavity scanning system, to improve the management of mining through affected ground. This system was to be used in conjunction with probe drilling and void mapping activities. A field test in one area of the Fimiston Mine verified the capability of the C-ALS system to quickly and efficiently assist in this decision making process. The C-ALS scanner features lightweight, carbon fi¬ber alignment rods from Measurement Devices Ltd.'s (MDL) Boretrak MKII. This is a borehole deviation system that stops the two axis measurement head rotating and lowers the system down a borehole. The scanner is deployed by a 110-mm (4.3-in.) borehole, up, down or sideways. The operator can then carry out vertical and horizontal plan section scans at any user specified ARC (an angular increment of 2°) or the distance between two points on the ARC (CHORD) increments. Windows '95 software enables the operator to control the cavity scanner remotely, surveying the area in real time. The system makes data quick and convenient.

The abstract highlights the impact of flocculants used in the middle thickener of a copper-molybdenum plant on both process water quality and molybdenite floatability. The study investigates the effect of a starch-based flocculant (wheat starch) on the efficiency of the middle thickener and molybdenite flotation. The findings indicate that the presence of starch influences the settling behavior of particles with different shapes, and the dosage of starch affects both molybdenum recovery and the presence of copper minerals in the molybdenum concentrate.

This paper illustrates the application of geostatistics to a roll front type uranium deposit located in Wyoming. The steps involved in calculation of experimental variograms, variogram modeling and verification of the resulting models are described in detail. The resulting spherical variogram models for grade thickness and thickness show strong geometrical anisotropies. The major axis of anisotropy for both variables is approximately parallel to the axis of the roll front and the minor axis perpendicular to the roll. This model confirms the technique of drilling "fences" across the roll front, where the drilling is much closer together than the fences along the roll.

"The solubilities of rhodium (Rh) in a molten silver alloy in doré-smelting conditions for treating copper refinery slime at temperatures of 1,000 to 1,300 °C were measured using a high-temperature equilibration-quenching technique and direct phase analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The results obtained indicate that the solubility of rhodium in molten silver is very limited: only 0.04 to 0.26 weight percent at 1,000 and 1,300 °C, respectively. The thermodynamic properties of rhodium in molten silver were estimated from the solubility data. The compositions of the solid rhodium alloys in equilibrium with molten silver-rich doré metal were also measured in this study. The excess rhodium in the doré alloy will precipitate during the refining as solid, greater than 99 weight percent Rh.IntroductionSilver refining is a core step of the processes of anode slime treatment and precious metals recovery in copper refineries (Hait, Jana and Sanyal, 2009; Ludvigsson and Larsson, 2003). It separates the oxidic materials, such as nickel oxide (NiO) and barium sulfate (BaSO4), from metallics after the de-coppering and de-selenation steps of the anode slime, and refines the silver bullion from the undesired elements present (Cooper, 1990; Hyvärinen, Lindroos and Yllö, 1989). Doré metal is a silver-rich alloy which after the smelting step will be refined electrolytically, and the remaining constituents of gold as well as the platinum group metals (PGM) will be subsequently recovered in their own processing stages.Because of low concentrations of PGMs in copper, they are typically soluble in the doré metal in anode slime treatment. This can be concluded from their binary phase diagram data with silver (Massalski et al., 2007). One exception is sometimes encountered in the anode slime smelting operations if the smelter feedstock is rich in rhodium, as may be the case if the raw materials contain secondary raw materials such as e-scrap. The solubility of rhodium in solid silver is less than 0.04 weight percent (Królas and Sternik, 1995), and its solubility in molten silver is highly uncertain. The only experimental information in the literature (Królas et al., 1993; Elliott, 1985) suggests that the silver-rhodium alloy system at 960 °C forms a eutectic, which locates less than 2 °C below the melting point of pure silver (Arblaster, 2015). Early observations (Rössler, 1900) propose that rhodium is insoluble in molten silver even if solid silver-rhodium solutions have been recently produced on a nanoscale (Kusada et al., 2010).The aim of this study is to measure experimentally the solubility of rhodium in molten silver at doré metal smelting and refining temperatures. The silver alloy used to mimic the doré alloy contained silver and about 1 weight percent of the alloying elements copper, gold, palladium, rhodium and tellurium. The experiments were carried out in metal-slag equilibria with nitrogen-oxygen mixtures as the atmosphere, employing an equilibration-quenching technique and using direct phase composition analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) (Jak, Hayes and Lee, 1995)."

Since 470 BC Greeks initiated the growth of the fascinating world of the underground Naples, of which this cave belongs. It seems that once here the god Mithras was worshiped. It’s also became a quarry for tuff extraction and in 1600s it became an aqueduct serving the area. In 1853 the Bourbon Tunnel, a project commissioned by King Ferdinand II of Bourbon to allow easy escape from the Royal Palace in case of riots, was connected to this network of tunnels. The cavern became an air raid shelter during the Second World War, then a deposit of cars and motorcycles in the '50s and' 60s, a disposal area and it has been abandoned in the last 40 years before it’s new utilization. INTRODUCTION Over time, the overcrowding and congestion of major cities’ historic centres has led to seeking spaces underground that can accommodate activities and car parks, as in the case of the Morelli cavity, site of the future car park by that name. Before describing its characteristics, design solutions, and executive problems, it is necessary to introduce the site historically into the broader landscape of the cavities present below ground in the municipality of Naples. The province of Naples, which includes the area of the Municipality of Naples, has a large number of cavities. The existence of “Naples underground” is connected with the morphological and geological conformation of its territory, consisting of tuff stone which has entirely special features of lightness, brittleness, and stability. The first transformations in the territory’s morphology, taking place thanks to the Greeks starting from 470 BC, initiated the growth of the fascinating world of Naples underground. These transformations were dictated by water provision requirements, which led to the creation of underground cisterns to collect rainwater, and by the need to recover construction material to erect the buildings of Neapolis. In subsequent centuries, the city’s expansion led to the construction of a proper aqueduct, which allowed drinking water to be collected and distributed thanks to a series of cisterns linked to a dense network of tunnels. During Roman rule, the existing aqueduct was expanded and perfected, but with the rise of the Angevins in 1266, the city saw great urban expansion, which obviously corresponded with increased extraction of tuff from the subsoil to construct new buildings. This confirmed a particular feature of Naples: that of having been generated from its own innards, with buildings rising directly above the quarry that provided their building material."
