A detailed kinetic study of the flotation installation at the Metcalf Concentrator revealed a rougher flotation circuit operating under less than optimal conditions. Based on these results, a project was initiated to approximately double the rougher flotation capacity by increasing the installed volume from 780 cubic meters to 1,560 cubic meters. This project, which was completed in early 1991, replaced the existing cells with larger capacity cells. A comprehensive analysis of results demonstrates significant metallurgical benefits. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND The Metcalf Concentrator is located in Morenci, Arizona and is part of Phelps Dodge Morenci, Incorporated. Sumitomo Metal Mining of Arizona is a minority partner in the operation with 15% interest. The Metcalf Concentrator is the newer and smaller concentrator and operates in conjunction with the Morenci Concentrator. Operating capacity at Metcalf is currently 48,000 TPD of ore on a 365 days per year basis. The Metcalf Concentrator was commissioned in 1974 at a 30,000 TPD operating rate for the purpose of treating ores originating in the Metcalf Mine. The mine takes its name from the former town of Metcalf which was named for Robert Metcalf who was credited with discovery of the mineral district. The predominant ore mineral is chalcocite which occurs as a secondary enrichment closely associated with iron pyrite. The host rock is largely granodiorite and quartz monzonite. The original rougher flotation circuit consisted of a total of six rows of Wemco 8.5 cu. meter (300 cu.ft.) flotation machines treating pulp from the two grinding sections (Sections A and B). Each row was configured in a 4-4-4 arrangement. Shortly after startup the throughput rate was increased significantly without sustaining a recovery loss. This increase was achieved by raising the target value for the particle size of the cyclone overflow which is the rougher flotation feed. Shortly thereafter, the capacity of the pump and cyclone began to restrict further increases in throughput. After testing, two 66 cm. (26-in.) cyclones and a 12-in. X 12-in. centrifugal pump replaced the original classification equipment. As a result of these modifications, the grinding section could routinely process in excess of 42,000 TPD. Due to the increased tonnage rates, limitations in the rougher flotation circuit performance were observed. In an effort to improve the performance of rougher flotation with this higher throughput, the speed of the flotation mechanisms was increased from 230 RPM to 250 RPM. This change improved the suspension of the coarser feed and induced additional air into the pulp. It did, however, apply additional strain to the motors, shortening their life. At these elevated processing rates, it was found that the dart valves operated almost entirely at the top end of the control range and could not efficiently handle upsets from the grinding section. This was remedied by lowering the end overflow weir and allowing some of the tailings to overflow the end weir. However, in order to obtain acceptable recovery levels, the flotation pulp was maintained at a high level, adversely influencing the rougher concentrate grade.

The anomaly ratio is obtained by dividing the analyzed value of an element by the anomaly threshold value of the element. The sum of anomaly ratios for all anomalous elements in a sample may be compared with similar sums for other samples, so that the samples having the greatest anomaly-ratio totals can be recognized easily. In partial or full-suites-of-ore-elements the use of anomaly ratios is more meaningful than analyzed values because the ratios quickly indicate anomalous elements and call attention to samples and localities that should be investigated.

The theoretical requirements for the flotation d large particles are discussed. A flotation machine is described which has components which meet many of the theoretical requirements for the flotation of large particles. The machine's salient features include multiple fine-bubble attachment, froth level feeding, quiescence, shallow depth, and short flotation time. Test conditions and results are presented for the laboratory flotation of 10 mesh phosphate, 4 mesh potash, and 1/2 inch coal. In addition, test conditions and results of pilot plant flotation of minus 14 plus 35 mesh phosphate and minus 14 plus 150 mesh phosphate are also presented.

The currently known and used plastics and rubber recycling or sorting processes cannot be applied efficiently and economically due to large amounts and different numbers of plastics types as well as of fine bulky materials (<4mm). These wastes are mostly given to land-fill sites. Thermal adhesion seems to be a great means to efficiently separate plastics mixes. Tests carried out at a special lab-scale testing unit (TaA1) confirm the effectiveness and feasibility of the separating mechanism. The thermal properties of the individual types of plastics differ from each other to a sufficient degree so that special products or product mixes of high material purity can be obtained according to the respective requirements. For this reason, plastics mixes such as PE and PP can be sorted with very good results. The separation efficiency is influenced only by different contact surfaces. The contact period can be adjusted to a short period of time so that sorting large amounts of fine dispersed plastics seems feasible. Sorting processes in feed streams were shown to be technologically effective when applying appropriate technologies. For the time being, the technological application of a thermal adhesion drum separator (TaTr1) is suitable. First tests on such a pilot-scale unit provided good separation results.

Recent re-classification of crystalline silica as a potential human carcinogen has resulted in a new limit of 0.1% free silica in bulk powdered minerals. Detection of silica at this level can be expected to severely challenge or exceed the capabilities of existing protocols for x-ray diffraction, the traditional method for free silica determination. Automated SEH-EOS analysis provides an attractive alternative method, with direct analysis of individual particles for the determination of the concentration of free silica, and a direct measurement of silica particle sizes. This paper will discuss automated SEH analytical procedures, sample preparation, and statistical considerations.

Recent advancements in computer hardware have led to the development of new ventilation planning software for PC&apos;s. These programs now can be run more quickly and can display their outputs with graphical techniques. Only a few of the existing programs have the capability to display the output data graphically on plotters. Graphical presentation of ventilation simulation data is essential for quick and sure comparisons of alternative analyses. Recently a noticeable growth has occurred in the application of graphics for display and interpretation of the data that have been developed by simulation procedures. The process of mine ventilation network analyses used for planning and design can benefit from this development. The authors describe and present graphics-assisted software that has been developed to work with a mine ventilation simulation program. This software has some of the following features: - graphic editor on screen, - graphical display of output data on screen (EGA, VGA), - graphical display on plotter or printer, - scaling capability (desired part of the entire schematic can be displayed), and - such values as flow, pressure loss, gas concentration for branches, and pressure and elevation at junctions can be presented as labels.

Little did I know, in 1977, that when the A. P. Green Refractories Raw Material Manager showed me 5-6 burlap bags with samples of calcined high alumina bauxite in their testing lab that this was the start of China moving to be the number one user and producer of calcined refractory bauxite. According to Ted Dickson in his August 2008 Industrial Minerals article China produced about 4 million tons of calcined bauxite in 2007 using 2 million tons themselves. They imposed an export limitation of 970,000 tons in 2007 and 940,000 tons in 2008. A 10% growth will take up the difference between exports and production in 4 years. Two of these years are gone. It will take only 4 more years to eliminate the export quota in home use. Then they will be importing unless they increase production. Guyana was exporting over a half million tons in 1975 and sold less than 70,000 tons in 2002. Basai Metals Group bought Guyana?s deposits and is rose to 250,000 tons in 2007 and expects to produce 280,000 tons in 2008. PRICES According to the USGS Prices dropped from $172/per ton for Guyana calcines in 1980 just after the start of Chinese production to $122 in 1985. Guyana prices averaged around $120/ton from 1985 to 2005. China?s price dropped as low as $45/ton in 1995 undercutting Guyana and making it virtually impossible for anyone to get into the market. The price suddenly escalated to $550/ton FOB China in the summer of 2008 when China actually cut its exports in half. The price dropped in the fall as orders dropped. This is a four to five fold price increase. Is this a shortage of bauxite or a monopoly? Australia dropped out of the market in 2008 and Surinam, controlled by Alcoa, is not participating right now. Will these two come back in to make up the difference? Will the price hold up so they can make a profit? [ ] The low prices have undoubtedly affected the prices of the 60 and 79% alumina bauxite which can hold down the quantity of 80% plus calcined refractory needed in the world market. China is starting to upgrade lower quality bauxite up to 90% alumina. With high prices kaolin alteration to high alumina comes into play. The calcined bauxite is also used for proponents, Brown fused alumina, and abrasive grades which compete with Refractories. These and the tightness of supplies needed for metallurgical will hold prices up. TONNAGE China is the number one supplier and consumer of high alumina calcined bauxite in the world. Basai Metals Group Guyana (BMGG) is owned and controlled by Basai Minerals Group of China. This appears to be the second largest supplier. Australia has dropped production and Brazil is just starting to expand. It appears China is going to replace some of exports caused by the Export License 940,000 ton maximum in 2008 by raising Guyana?s (BMGG) production of calcined refractory grade bauxite. Companies exceeded restriction in 2007. Fines have been imposed for 2008. In August 2008 they appear on line to meet the 2008 quota. After August prices have dropped off as orders dropped due to the recession. Guyana was the largest producer in 1975 with 769,000 tons which decreased to less than 79,000 tons in 2002. The U. S. is a small part of the world production. I have used the United States charts to represent world imports because I have little data on what other countries import and pay FOB for their bauxite. China started exporting calcined 80% plus refractory bauxite to the United States in 1979 with 24,000 tons. By 1985 they were the number one importer with 169,000 tons. Guyana who had been number one in shipments to the United States gradually decreased to 36,000 tons in 2006. Guyana has been purchased by China BMGG and will increase there production to over 200,000 tons in 2009. Australia shut down production in 2008 and Surinam has elected to not send any Calcined bauxite to the United States. Lynn lake, Manitoha, where Sherritt has operated a copper-nickel mine since 1954, is located north of the 56th parallel approximately SOO miles north of Winnipeg. Sherritt&apos;s new, 3,000 tpd, copper-zinc Fox Mine is situated 30 miles southwest of Lynn lake. This paper focuses on the Fox Mine concentrator, hut first some background information. Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited started mining operations as a copper-zinc producer in 1931 at Sherridon, Manitoba, 150 miles south of Lynn Lake. As Sherridon fizzled out development of a series of nickel-copper orebodies commenced at Lynn Lake. The Forward process was developed to treat the nickel concentrate from the Lynn concentrator. Sherritt&apos;s ammonia leaching process is now history and is expected to gain more prominence as pressure is applied to the mining industry for closer environmental control. But few are aware of the fact that the present Lynn Lake crushing plant and concentrator were dismantled in the autumn of 1951 and freighted from Sherridon by tractor train during the winters of 1952 and 1953. The copper-zinc orehody at Fox Mine was discovered early in 1961 by geophysical methods which included both airborne and ground surveys. It is part of a ,large body of massive and semi-massive sulphides consisting chiefly of pyrite; with chalcopyrite, sphalerite (containing 7-9% iron) and pyrrhotite in varying proportions which occur within a series of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The total mineralized zone is a lenticular body with a minimum average length and width of 1,350 feet and 66 feet respectively, to the explored depth of 2,000 feet. The average sulphide content is 67%. Higher zinc zones are masses of pyrite grains cemented by sphalerite with lower than average copper content. Zones higher in copper and lower in zinc are slightly more quartzose. Gold and silver are present in small amounts roughly proportional to the copper content.

Real-time GPS position monitoring of mining equipment is becoming more and more commonplace. Digital mining plans can now be used onboard properly equipped earthmoving equipment and excavation status is available in real-time via high bandwidth data radio systems. These systems provide a closely integrated link between operations and planning. No longer must operations wait for or be hindered by insufficient survey marks, nor is engineering delayed by lack of timely mine status information. Unprecedented efficiency gains become feasible -from the engineering office, to drilling and mucking, to reclamation, as well as in mine construction projects. Direct economic benefits of these systems will be explored as will the less tangible, but very significant, indirect operational efficiency gains.

One of the challenges of mining is the concentration of heavy metals it releases into the environment through a phenomenon called Acid Mine Drainage. Freiberg is no exception due to its long mining activities. The European Union proposes that all rivers and streams must be in a good ecological status by the year 2027 but this would be difficult for large water sources as it would be economically unviable. Consequently, the approach of treating these waters at point sources would be of immense help and hence this column experiment on mine water treatment with carbon sorbents to remove zinc form the Rothschönberger Stolln. For this experiment three resins namely, APTsorb, activated coke, charred fermentation residues (which was produced by the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology) were analyzed through a simple column experiment to determine their sorption capacities. Through their sorption capacity as this experiment seeks to ascertain: we are able to make suggestions scientifically on the best material among the three for the future design of a treatment plant for the RSS. After the experiment whereby a 10 ml peri glass column was used, material A: APTsorb showed the least adsorption capacity (0.01 meq/g) and this could be attributed to the fact that the resin works well under pre-determined parameters such as pH and surface area. Material B: Activated coke showed a better sorption capacity (0.53 meq/g) in comparison to the basis value used for this experiment. Material C: charred fermentation residue which was produced by the University showed the most efficient capacity of (1.69 meq/g). This in comparison with the value used as the basis for this experiment showed that material C (charred fermentation residue) is very efficient for zinc sorption. pH values measured at the effluent of all the experiment were slightly higher than the pH measured in the initiating water.

The mining sector is one of the leading sectors where work accidents are most intense because of the constant change of work environment and heavy working conditions. The losses and the halt of production after the accident negatively affect productivity and production efficiency. It has been found that there are very few studies on the use of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), which is one of the nonparametric efficiency analysis methods, in the evaluation of mining sector occupational accidents. According to parametric activity measurement methods, it has been tried to show that the DEA can also offer the opportunity to interpret work accidents by taking advantage of its advantages. Due to the application of open-pit mining methods along with underground working techniques which increase the risk factors with respect to accidents at work that occurred between 2012 and 2018 of Western Lignite Corporation (WLC) were tried to be analyzed in the present work. As a result of the analytical work using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) for the years 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018, inefficiency has been determined in both underground and surface operations. According to the results obtained, it was determined that WLC could not produce enough production in both the underground and surface coal mining operation, despite the accidents that occurred, while it had the opportunity to produce more. In addition, it was found that the increase in accidents occurred more than the increase in the amount of production during the years studied.

Preliminary design is underway for the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority’s (MWRA) next major tunnel program, the Metropolitan Water Tunnel Program (MWTP). The MWTP is the latest part of MWRA’s ongoing efforts to achieve redundancy for its metropolitan water transmission system including its historic deep rock City Tunnel, City Tunnel Extension and Dorchester Tunnels. The MWTP comprises several deep rock tunnels that will be approximately 10-foot to 12-foot finished diameter totaling just over fourteen miles long and ten connections to existing large diameter surface piping and pumping stations. This paper will present an update on current engineering and permitting efforts, packaging schemes, and the schedule to complete the MWTP.

One of the most important considerations in the efficient operation of an under¬ground mine is the haulage system. Often the determining factor between profit or loss is the quick removal of ore and waste from the working places to secondary and main-line haulage areas, and so on to the outside. Important, too, is moving supplies from the surface to the working faces so that the loading process can continue with little interruption. Men must he transported in a rapid but safe manner. It has been through the efficient use and generally the combination of mine cars, track, belt conveyors and rubber-tired haulage equipment that underground operations have been able to compete with the more popular strip or surface mining. As near-surface ore bodies are exhausted, underground haulage will play an expanding part in economically furnishing the world&apos;s needs for all types of minerals. The choice of underground haulage equipment, wherever possible, should be one that will give the smallest overall cost of ore removal during the life of the mine while meeting necessary safety requirements. The reader is referred to Sec. 12 for equipment such as scrapers and load-dump-¬haul units that perform loading as well as haulage duties. 14.1-MINE CARS AND TRACK NILES E. GROSVENOR Main-Line and Secondary Haulage-Many mines today use a combination of belt and rail haulage. Even if a- belt system is used to carry the product from the face to the surface, track is used to transport workmen and supplies. A track system, when properly installed, will provide interruption-free and safe haulage. Schrecengost 2 lists the following as major advantages of track haulage: 1. Safety in transporting men in and out of the mine in personnel cars. 2. Easy and rapid transportation of supervisory personnel. 3. A temporary shutdown occasioned by a roof fall or power failure along the haulage system will not shut down the production areas. 4. Quick availability of repair parts and supplies. 5. Large pieces of coal or rock can be handled without damage to the haulage equipment. 6. In areas where quality fluctuates noticeably, different cars may be separated out for special preparation. 7. Rock or equipment may be loaded and moved out of the mine without interference with the production or preparation of the coal. 14.1.1-MINE CARS Mine cars with steel bodies are used in all types of present-day mining. Wooden cars usually are more bulky and less resistant to wear and damage, but are more easily repaired. Regardless of the type of mine car selected, it is most practical to standardize on one type or make to simplify repairs and limit the amount of spare parts necessary to stock. Rigid-body flat-bottomed cars are simpler and usually lower than others of equal capacity. Federal regulations require that refuge alternatives (RAs) be located within 305 m (1,000 ft) of the working face and spaced at one-hour travel distances in the outby area in underground coal mines, in the event that miners cannot escape during a disaster. The Mine Safety and Health Administration mandates that RAs provide safe shelter and livable conditions for a minimum of 96 hours while maintaining the apparent temperature below 35 °C (95 °F). The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health used a validated thermal simulation model to examine the mechanisms of heat loss from an RA to the ambient mine and the effect of mine strata composition on the final internal dry bulb temperature (DBT) for a mobile tent-type RA. The results of these studies show that 51 percent of the heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine is due to radiation and 31 percent to conduction. Three mine width and height configurations and four mine strata compositions were examined. The final DBT inside the RA after 96 hours varied by less than 1 °C (1.8 °F) for the three mine width/height configurations and by less than 2 °C (3.6 °F) for the four mine strata compositions.

Model pillars of limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite, with length-to-diameter ratios of 3, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 (0.286 for granite), were broken in axial compression to determine to what extent an increase in end constraint increased compressive strength. Radial end constraints of 13 to 23 percent of the average axial stress in the pillar, produced by solid steel rings bonded with epoxy to the ends of dogbone-shaped specimens, increased compressive strength somewhat above that of cylindrical pillars without ring constraint. However, when the results were compared with those obtained by other investigators for straight specimens of several rock types taken collectively, with L/D ratios greater than 0.5, the resulting strengths were not significantly different. Thus, the amount of end constraint produced by the solid steel rings was about the same as that produced by the friction from the steel end plates. In other tests a radial prestress of 3,000 psi or 5,000 psi was applied prior to axial loading by adjustable hardened steel rings to increase the constraint above that obtained for the solid rings. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 3,000 psi prestress, was 54.3 percent for limestone, 40.3 percent for marble, 44.7 percent for sandstone, and 23.4 percent for granite. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 5,000 psi prestress, was 74.2 percent for limestone, 51.2 percent for marble, 61.6 percent for sandstone, and 29.7 percent for granite. These constraints increased the compressive strength significantly above the strength of straight specimens and solid-ring constrained specimens. These results suggest that large horizontal stresses in orebodies mined by the room and pillar method should increase the strength of the pillars and allow an increase in ore recovery by a reduction of pillar size when major structural defects are absent.

The California Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) is the nation&apos;s first legislation establishing a statewide mineral resource policy governing mining activities that recognizes regional needs and retains local autonomy. The Southern California Rock Products Association supported this proposed legislation. It was through our efforts that SMARA was passed in 1975. The local planning and zoning processes, which are so critical to the mining industry, have been significantly improved with implementation of SMARA. Recognition of the importance of the mining industry is now being developed by the State Mining and Geology Board and the California Division of Mines and Geology (CDMG).

"Surface settlement adjacent to sensitive structures is a challenging issue in the tunnel engineering. In this study, 3D simulation of TBM excavation has been performed with the FLAC3D code and then the results compared with real monitoring data. Sensitivity analysis was carried out for all parameters affecting the surface settlement, such as the tail void grouting pressure (Pt), the face pressure (Pf), the tunnel diameter (D), overburden (q), shield thickness (t) and the length of the shield (L). The results show that the face pressure, tail void grouting and tunnel diameter have a considerable effect on the maximum ground displacement.In this paper, the monitoring data from Mashhad Metro was used to verify the numerical simulation. Data monitoring for about 47 sections between A2 and D2 stations was selected and a multiple regression analysis was performed. Based on this analysis, an empirical relationship was obtained for the coefficient of regression relationship which confirmed the sensitivity analysis.INTRODUCTIONThe surface settlement due to tunnel excavation is a complex issue, since the surface displacement is a function of several parameters that they are related to the excavation method, soil characteristics and TBM elements. Prediction of deformation is a very important issue, especially in urban areas, since these displacements may be affected the superficial structures. In recent studies, one of the most popular empirical relationships that is used to predict the surface displacement has gussian curve that it was suggested by Peck [1, 2]. An analytical relationship was proposed by Chow that its base assume was isotropic of soil, that surface settlement can be estimated based on the tunnel geometry and the shear modulus(G) [3]. Besides these methods numerical approaches such as the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the Finite Difference Method (FDM) have been used over the last twenty years, since numerical modeling has a high capability to simulation a complex soil conditions and irregular geometry [4]. In this study, all aspects of the EPB-TBM on Mashad Metro Line 2 were modeled and the most important influences on surface displacement in urban areas were determined [1, 3]."

16.1.1-VENTILATION&apos;S ROLE Importance of Ventilation and Environmental Control-Mine ventilation is necessary for the preservation of human life and for the conduct of operations involved in the underground extraction of minerals. It clearly is the most essential of the functions attendant to mining, yet it is auxiliary to the primary objective in mineral extraction. Ventilation in mining thus poses a paradox: ideally, it should be carried out with minimum interference with and cost to production operations, yet it is absolutely vital in providing adequate environmental con¬ditions to support mining. Deterioration of the atmosphere, along with rising ground pressure, imposes the ultimate constraint with depth in underground mining. Ventilation requirements and costs rise rapidly with depth. To preserve atmospheric quality under intense heat conditions, ventilation at great depths must be supplemented by air condition¬ing. Likewise, when mining at any depth under severe or excessive conditions of gas, dust or humidity, supplementary control measures must be employed. In recent years, environmental standards in mines have been raised substantially. While limits are based on human tolerance, increasing concern is being expressed for standards of human comfort. The reasons are economic, as well as humanitarian. Worker performance and longevity correlates closely with environmental quality. Further, adverse accident and insurance compensation rates are a consequence of unsatisfactory environmental conditions. No mining company can afford to be lax in its environmental and ventilation practices. Functions and Processes-Ventilation is the control of air movement, its amount and its direction. As a means of quantity control, it is one of the constituent processes of total air conditioning, the simultaneous control within prescribed limits of the quality, quantity and temperature-humidity of the air. Ventilation is the most common and most. important conditioning process employed in mines for air environmental control. In mine ventilation, air is coursed through the mine workings and openings themselves and, for auxiliary purposes, through vent tubing and ducts. Thus, many interdependencies exist between the mining system and ventilation method. In fact, the two often have evolved ,jointly, as in room-and-pillar extraction of bedded or tabular mineral deposits, such as coal. Ventilation in mines today is provided almost exclusively by large fans, although air flow may result due to natural (thermodynamic) conditions. As mines increase in depth, size and complexity, demands on the ventilation system to maintain more stringent standards of environmental quality likewise rise. On the other hand, never have the technology and resources of the mining industry to cope with environmental problems been so well developed as they are today. In Colombia, more than 15 regions and around 100 municipalities develop gold mining at different scales, and these operations generate mining waste composed of processing fluids and crushed rock with metals and high silica content. Cement production requires clinker, gypsum and other corrective additives. Clinker results from the partial fusion of some minerals including silica. In this study is proposed to evaluate the effect of the use of mining tailings sands from gold mining in the manufacture of clinker. A mineral deposit has been discovered and explored sufficiently to establish the presence of ore in ?commercially marketable quantities," This is the point at which exploration ends and development begins, Of course, when the presence of commercially marketable quantities of ore are thought to be present the deposit had to be evaluated before this decision could be reached. If, on the other hand, it was thought that commercially marketable quantities of ore are not present, either more exploration has to be done or the project must be abandoned. It is this decision with which this paper is concerned, more particularly, the influencing factors behind this decision. The final question to be answered is: what profit can my company reasonably expect to make by developing this property and putting it into production? The answer must be expressed as a figure for final profit per ton, money which can be used to pay dividends or to build up cash reserves. Some acquisition cost has probably been paid and the exploration cost incurred at the time of decision, (abandonment or development). In addition to returning these acquisition and exploration costs, the deposit must pay development, mining, milling, capital expense of new plants and equipment, taxes, and various other related costs.
