An ongoing problem for industry in Korea is effective removal of heavy metals from and safe disposal of spent power plant fly ash. This research endeavor attempts to develop selective separation of Ni from leach liquor using a selective chemical precipitation method. The research was conducted by changing two variables, the pH and the concentration of ions in solution. The effect of other ions present in the system on the separation efficiency of Ni species was also investigated by adjusting OH and NH3 concentrations. In the pH range of 7-9, the chemical precipitation method produced a high yield of Ni by precipitation from the fly ash leach liquor.

Research and Development (R&D) departments in the mining sector are essential for creating new solutions on productivity, safety, and sustainability. Nevertheless, the selection of R&D projects is complex, often influenced by subjective judgments and uncertainties. This paper explores the application of the Multicriteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) as a structured approach to evaluate and prioritize innovation projects based on various criteria such as safety, cost, environmental impact, and social acceptability. By assigning weights and quantifying criteria, MCDA enhances decision-making transparency and objectivity. This study aims to show a method that facilitates strategic thinking, resource optimization, and stakeholder engagement, ensuring that selected innovations align with the company’s long-term objectives and commitment to responsible mining practices.

Silver bearing bulk sulfide concentrates from several Peruvian mines were autoclaved in a 19 liter (five gallon) laboratory autoclave in Lima, Peru. Cyanidation of autoclaved concentrates following a hot lime jarosite destruction step extracted over 98 percent of the silver and over 95 percent of the gold. Autoclave operating parameters such as time, temperature, pulp density and autoclaved solids recycle were investigated and reaction rates determined. The problems of excessive heat generation, silver solubility during autoclaving, and formation of pellets containing unreacted sulfides were addressed. The data presented will be used to design a continuous autoclave pilot plant to pro-vide reliable scale up data for a 50 -100 ton per day facility.

Drilling underground in the Grasberg De-watering drifts has routinely hit water aquifers with high flow rates and pressures. Two types of holes are utilized; pilot-holes to probe ahead of the tunnel development to intersect aquifers ahead of the face; and de-watering holes to de-water rock formations that will drain water from the Grasberg pit and allow tunnel development to proceed safely. Recently, rates of 1050 psi static pressure have been recorded with flows from a NQ hole measured at 1350 gpm (US). The water flows can be slightly acidic, necessitating the use of stainless steel collar gear to resist corrosion. These rates were anticipated and contingencies were planned early to deal with these conditions. The collar gear is used to control water flows whereby the water is treated as an important resource. As a result, pm has established procedures to maintain safety of the drill crews, enable coring of the rock and to maintain safety of the miners who are driving the drifts.

While the late 1960's are known as the years of the public recognition of impending environmental crises, the 1970's will be known as the decade of public concern for improving the quality of that environment. One of the present major environmental concerns is the temporary disturbance resulting from coal surface or open cast mining. To realize that this concern will continue in the future, one need only observe the daily news media. Increasing energy demands in the U.S., a doubling of electrical power consumption each decade during the present century, and the projected needs for the remainder of the century are indica¬tions that coal surface mining as a major extractive industry will continue. Coal and lignite, prime energy resources and extremely abundant in these United States, in the face of seemingly limited gas, oil and uranium reserves, are both destined for expanded future use. Presently some extremely serious techno-logical and environmental problems are associated with the develop¬ment and use of nuclear power. It is true that the extraction and use of coal as an energy fuel poses disruptive problems for the environment, but the solutions to many of the problems are known or can be solved within a reasonable time framework. Certainly our national well-being and continued survival, as a free nation within the world community, automatically dictate the continued use of the coal resource for energy. Concurrently, those engaged in coal surface mining, with the temporary disturbance of the land and water resources, must also realistically conclude that public concern for maintaining and improving the quality of the environment will not diminish. Selective removal of mercury from cyanide leaching solutions while retaining silver has been a long-standing problem, due to the chemical similarity of mercury and silver. In order to be practical, a mercury removal process needs to be both highly selective and use inexpensive materials. This paper reports the use of zinc sulfide (ZnS) as a precipitant for mercury. The mercury cyanide complex (Hg(CN)4 2-) undergoes a replacement reaction with the zinc sulfide, forming insoluble HgS, while the silver cyanide complex (Ag(CN)2 -) remains in solution. Under appropriate conditions, the separation of mercury from silver is nearly quantitative, with close to 100% removal of mercury, while nearly none of the silver is precipitated.

Traditionally the mineral and mining engineers have characterized particles by sieving and-settling. Within the last decade, with the advent of the scanning microscope, entirely new experimental and theoretical approachesl-10/have been taken to minutely define the particle surface. This approach depends upon a hypothesis which takes advantage of the recent developments in automatic micro-scopes which can acquire large amounts of information in a short time and the new computational techniques which rapidly reduce the information to meaningful, practical data. Historically sieving and settling are the oldest sizing techniques known. Sieving by square screens, shown on Figure l-A is a common, current practice for sizing particles both in the laboratory and in production. A woven cloth is used which usually has square openings. The size particle that will pass through the opening dependent on a complex relationship of its morphology. As can be seen in Figure l-A, neither the width nor the height of the particle is determined by sieving. From square screens one and only one parameter characterizing the particle size is obtained, that parameter is the radius of the sphere that will just pass through the given sieve opening. A variation of square mesh screen is the slot screens, shown in Figure 1-B. Here another measure more closely associated with the height of the particle is obtained. Once again, one and only one parameter is associated with the particles' shape.

Sustainable Development is a very broad initiative in the mining industry, with major components running over the entire life of the mine. It likely commences with pre-exploration permitting and continues to post-mining final closure and possible land reuse. Most major mining corporations embrace the sustainability initiative, either out of a sense of social responsibility or out of necessity in order to continue doing business. But many may view the overall initiative as an added ?cost of doing business.? In many elements of sustainability, there clearly can be added cost ? some as simple as complying with self-imposed sustainability reporting. Fortunately, one major element of sustainable development can clearly be shown to reduce costs ? energy resource management. This paper will describe how the mining industry sustainable development effort differs from other industries, but can benefit from their experience in energy resource management. The mining industry can utilize proven methods from other industries to further their energy management efforts. In addition, many of the resources developed and employed to promote better energy resource management in non-mining industrial settings will be listed.

One of the critical challenges facing the mining industry ? and not just in the United States ? is the looming labor shortage. A significant percentage of the industry?s professional workforce is, well, getting old, and many will be retiring in the next 10 years or so. This is not a new issue to the industry. It has been discussed at various industry meetings and conferences for many years. How does mining, with its largely negative public image, attract young people to mining schools? And, equally important, who is going to teach them? Mining schools, what?s left of them in the United States, are beginning to lose qualified faculty to retirements, and no one is available to replace them. SME addressed this issue during the keynote session at its annual meeting in February in Denver, CO. This year?s theme was ?Mining: It?s About the People.? Despite a blizzard that blanketed the city on the day most attendees were to have arrived, the meeting still attracted a record 7,202 people. And the accompanying exhibit sold 822 booths, also a record. The U.S. Department of Energy?s National Energy Technology Laboratory contracted with the National Academies? National Research Council to complete a study concerning the availability of skilled workers to meet the energy and mineral security requirements for the United States. The National Research Council, in turn, asked SME to collect and analyze workforce trends in these industries. The result of SME?s analysis is the report ?Emerging Workforce Trends in the U.S. Energy and Minerals Industries.? It is available on the SME website, www.smenet.org. Click on Government Affairs. While the report did not paint a completely dismal picture, there were some disturbing results. It concluded that within 20 years there will not be a sufficient number of skilled professionals to satisfy the labor demand. That said, the report said that most of those positions would likely be filled. However, the U.S. mining will go through a period of time when the workforce will be made up of very young and senior workers.

The probability of a particle passing through a maze is predictable and consistent. This principle may be utilized to effect a particle size separation of materials by presenting a physical maze to a stream of material that will allow the fine particles to pass, while deflecting the coarse particles. A maze is effective even though all apertures encountered are many times larger than the particles being separated. By designing a machine that allows the probability parameters to be controlled and varied without changing physical dimensions, probability sizing becomes a useful tool for the separation of granular materials.

This chrysotile asbestos orebody is located near the northern tip of the Province of Quebec, Canada. It is some 1818 km (1130 mi) north of Montreal; 480 km (300 mi) north of the tree line and is situated within the zone of continuous permafrost. The open pit ore zone is approximately 0.4 km (1/4 mi) in length some 61 m (200 ft) in width and plunges at 25-30 below surface to a vertical depth of at least 610 m (2000 ft). The orebody was originally evaluated by programs of surface mapping, diamond drilling and bulk sampling. The fibre is semi-crude, possesses excellent strength, and good fibre length distribution.

Pima Mining Company has recently completed their expansion tripling the plant capacity to 18,000 tons per day and now is in the process off expanding to 30,000 tons per day with completion scheduled for the summer of 1967. This paper briefly discusses the additions to the mining department and support areas with a more detailed report on the complete new crushing plant and additions to the concentrator. The crushing plant includes a 54-inch gyratory crusher, three 7-foot standard and seven 7-foot short head crushers along with necessary screens, feeders, and conveyor belts to produce a minus 1/2-inch rod mill feed. The concentrator consists of ten milling sections, each containing one 10-foot by 16-foot rod and two 10.5-foot by 13-foot ball mills, classification is done with cyclones. Pulp from each section is floated in 50 cells of 66-inch Fagergren flotation machines to produce a rougher concentrate which is cleaned in six stages of Denver cleaners to produce a final concentrate The various mill products are thickened with disposal made in conventional manner. Plant instrumentation is discussed in the paper.

Division Andina has considered in its long range planning, the exploitation by panel caving method of "Third Panel" mine, which was started its production stage during the second half of 1995. This mine has two production levels, the first is grizzly level and another is L.H.D. level. Both sectors use the same haulage level where mineral is recollected through ore pass. For mineral loading and haulage its use 50ton diesel trucks combined with electro-hydraulic chutes. The automation has permitted what this operation is carrying out with remote control by driver's truck, in concordance to short range planning.

The industralized nations of the world have already established industries and economies which are greatly dependent upon the availability of energy. The underdeveloped and developing nations of the world are slowly and surely moving to the same utlimate requirements. The world wide need for distribution of energy sources is continuing to grow. At the present time there is a great imbalance between the sources of energy and the consuming economies In order to bring about greater equality between supply and demand major efforts and large capital expenditures are constantly being made. Industralized areas are seeking their own independent sources of energy whereas those areas of the world which contain great reserves of energy are limiting its export as well as developing its own industralized capacity. Nevertheless, energy bearing materials are still transported great distances in order to satiate the appetites of power hungry economies.

The entire subject area of micro-seismic events due to stored strain energy, as distinct from gas-driven coal outbursts, can be readily sub-divided into firstly events with their energy source from within the coal seam (termed “bursts”) and secondly, event with their energy source outside of the coal seam in either the overburden and/or floor strata. The reason for sub-dividing micro-seismic events in this manner is that if the causation mechanisms and associated geotechnical conditions are materially different, then effective pre-mining predictions and subsequent operational controls may also differ. Attempting to explain a multitude of micro-seismic event types without consideration of varying source mechanisms will inevitably lead to inadequate causal explanations and effective controls.

This paper describes the performance of a modern compound trough profile spiral that is optimized for fine coal cleaning. Reduced performance (Tromp) curves are presented to compare these new spirals with older designs, as well as with other commonly used coal cleaning equipment. As an aid to equipment selection and circuit design, data are also presented to show how variables, such as flow rate, pulp density, and particle size affect efficiency and the separation specific gravity.

In the exploitation of porphyry-type deposits, the quality of the ore is mostly defined according to its grade. Besides the simplest distinction, ore-waste, several grade categories may exist and they correspond to the different ways in which the ore is further processed. At the time of mining the selection of the different categories is done from extensive information available from blast holes. But planning has to be done before this information is available and it is necessary for the geologist to forecast, from exploration and development data alone, the possible outcome of the selection done later on a block, a level, or the whole deposit and ultimately predict the ore reserves and value of the deposit. A good statement of this problem has been presented at the 1976 AIME annual meeting by Williamson and Hueller (1976). They have shown that, if the cut-off values are directly applied to the estimated grade of blocks, a gross overestimation of the recovered tonnage of ore (14%) will occur. This problem, now termed "the vanishing tons problem" (DaVid, 1977) seems to be common in many open-pit operations and it has been explained several times (DaVid, 1972; Huijbregts, 1975). In order to solve it l.Jilliamson and Mueller proposed a solution based on compiling masses and masses of blast hole data available from mined-out portions of the deposit. They derived empirical correction factors which provide for every block, given its estimated grade, the expected tonnage and average -grade of each category of material within that block. The purpose of our work is to repeat the same exercise but ignoring the blast holes data i.e. we want to derive the correction factors from the only DOH data. Doing this, we are more in the real conditions where the valuation of the mine and are reserve analysis has to be made before production actually starts. Crystallization of ammonium paratungstate (APT) is frequently the last effective purification step in producing high-purity tungsten. However, crystallizer mother liquors are often several times higher in tungsten than predicted by the solubility of APT. The formation of heteropoly anions, particularly those containing phosphorus and silicon, is largely responsible. Solubility of tungsten in APT mother liquor can be linearly correlated with the concentration of these and other impurities. The problem can be overcome by direct treatment of the crystallizer feed solution with alum. By appropriate treatment, the aluminum hydroxide flocculates and is easily filtered, resulting in a purified low-aluminum crystallizer feed from which high APT yields can be attained.

Recent advances in Virtual Reality (VR) technology have resulted in major opportunities to improve safety training of mine workers, supervisors and managers. The hazardous nature of both surface and underground environments limits the type of safety training that can be carried out. VR offers the potential to expose mine personnel to hazardous situations in a safe, highly visual and interactive manner. Customized simulations of mine layouts, dynamic operations and mine environment can be set up and mine personnel can be allowed to move around the virtual mine, making decisions at key points. The consequences of both correct and incorrect decisions can be immediately fed back to the trainee.

Exploration of new resources and development of new equipment and designs are an ever changing facet of mining. New equipment to handle specialized operations is being developed and new techniques for its use explored. One such system is reviewed. Another is a potential system for handling the thinner stray coal seams between the more profitable thick seams. The availability of federal coal leases in the West is reviewed and current planning discussed. Gulf Coast lignites have been of much interest in recent months and are overviewed.
