Semisoluble salt minerals are characterized by their ionic bonding and are distinguished from soluble salt minerals by their limited solubility in water. One group of semisoluble salt minerals being considered is the alkaline earth salt minerals, including fluorite (CaF2), calcite (CaCO3) and apatite (Ca5F (PO4)3), as well as celestite (SrSO4) and barite (BaSO4). Another group of semisoluble salt minerals being considered is the rare-earth salts, which include bastnaesite ((Ce, La) CO3F), monazite (CePO4) and xenotime (YPO4). Surface chemistry features of these selected semisoluble salt minerals are discussed with respect to flotation separations. First, the surface chemistry features of alkaline earth semisoluble salt minerals are reviewed, and then the surface chemistry features of rare-earth semisoluble salt minerals are examined. The discussion includes electrokinetic behavior, wetting characteristics and collector adsorption.

The European climate and energy framework for 2030 is highlighting the reduction of man-made CO2 by increasing the use of renewable energy to mitigate climate change. In this spirit, Germany has decided to erase the coal use as an energy source by 2038 completely. Inevitably, this strategy promises a feasible, responsible, and sustainable post-mining management, because 200 years of coal mining have created numerous challenges necessary to tend to once the mining ends. Thus, the Research Institute for Post- Mining (FZN) at the TH Georg Agricola University in Bochum, Germany, has developed a holistic approach to meet these postmining challenges including further expertise present at our university. Here, the four strategic research pillars are (1) technical geoecology and hydrogeology to avoid and mitigate risks underground, (2) geomonitoring to evaluate and protect the surface, (3) industrial heritage preservation and engineering to secure and reuse brownfields such as mine sites, and (4) economic transformation planning of mining regions to enable a prosper future for generations to come. In all efforts, we aim to achieve the fundamental goals of the UN to deal with the resources of our planet responsibly and sustainably. Furthermore, we are synergizing increasingly with national and international networks in the interest of social, economic, and environmental stakeholders.

Hydrolyzable surfactants such as fatty acids and amines undergo, in addition to micellisation and precipitation, various associative interactions in aqueous solutions to form ion molecular complexes such as acid-soap, dimers etc. depending upon the solution conditions such as pH. The interaction of these collector species with the mineral surface and with other dissolved species in solution will play a significant role in determining the interfacial processes such as adsorption and flotation. Marked differences in the hydrophobicity imparted to the mineral surface depending upon the solution conditions such as Ph can be attributed to possible differences in surface activities of the above complexes. This aspect of solution chemistry of flotation systems is discussed here for two widely used collectors namely, oleic acid and dodecylamine. Equilibrium species distribution diagrams based on the available literature .data and on estimates of energy of interactions between molecules, have been obtained for oleic acid and dodecylamine solutions.

Critical minerals are becoming more important in our technological society because they are used in many of our electronic devices, batteries, and magnets. In New Mexico, low to moderate concentrations of critical minerals are found in Late Cretaceous coal and related strata in the San Juan and Raton Basins. These rocks are being characterized as part of the DOE’s CORE-CM (Carbon Ore, REE, and Critical Minerals) program. The New Mexico coal, humate, and clinker deposits are relatively low in REE (<325 ppm TREE), Li (<90 ppm), V (<168 ppm), Co (<51 ppm), Ni (<108 ppm), Zr (<557 ppm), and many other critical minerals compared to normal economic deposits. Some of these rocks are enriched in Al2O3 (<40%) and Sr (<3740 ppm), both critical minerals. Common minerals hosting the critical minerals in these rocks include clay minerals, zircon, and rutile/anatase. As the demand for some of these elements increases because of increased need and short supplies, the dollar value per ton of ore rises, enhancing deposit economics. Ultimately, economic potential will most likely depend upon production of more than one commodity, maybe even from coal, humate, and clinker deposits.

Each year more than 400 coal miners are injured (fatal and non-fatal) by rock falling from between or around roof supports. Many of these injuries could be prevented by the installation of roof screen (wire mesh). However, many coal mines may be reluctant to use roof screen because of the added cost. The goal of this study was to determine the potential saving in workers? compensation (WC) premiums that could be achieved due to a reduction in rock fall injuries after roof screening. The WC rate-setting methods utilized by IL and KY were investigated in this study. Using actual data obtained from MSHA, national and state WC bodies and individual insurance companies (e.g. average cost per injury, loss cost rate, number of injuries per year, number of injuries preventable each year with roof screening), hypothetical mines (representing two mine sizes: 67 and 150 employees) were constructed with realistic ranges for estimates of injuries and WC premium costs. Using each state?s actual WC rate-setting formulas, total savings in WC costs after a three-year period were determined. Across both states, savings in WC premiums ranged from 1.8% to 14.6% when injuries were reduced by 10% to 20%. Additionally, an economic analysis was performed for an existing mine consisting of 67 employees. For this mine, the annual cost of a roof screening program was estimated at $240,000. If the screening prevented 13 ?struck by? WC claims over a 3-year period at this mine, the reduction in WC premiums alone could pay for the entire screening program.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), with the assistance of cooperating underground mining operations and state agencies, has conducted research exploring devices and technologies that could be used to assist miners navigating through smoke and dust resulting from a fire or explosion. Recent events in mines confirm that smoke and dust can enter and contaminate mine escapeways, creating an atmosphere with severely reduced visibility. This reduced visibility results in substantially increased escape times, possible disorientation or confusion, and increased stress levels, and may prevent evacuation altogether. Tools or devices that assist miners in navigating through smoke-filled areas void of lifelines could make the difference in successful escape from the mine. This paper presents the results of OMSHR research to identify and evaluate tools and devices that could provide meaningful information to evacuating miners in areas with limited visibility and without the benefit of a lifeline.

The Purpose of the Paper It is fitting that the first paper of a session on the Financial Aspects of Mining should be on the basic data upon which any financial discussion of a mining project must be based. The history of a mining project starts with exploration in an area considered geologically favorable for mineralization and culminates in the discovery of a body of valuable mineral material commonly known as a mineral deposit. Subsequently more detailed exploration establishes the approximate size, shape, tonnage and average grade of the deposit by surface and/or underground drilling, -surface trenching and/or underground workings. Some preliminary metallurgical testing and other studies, as required, are made at this time. Development work is then carried out to provide representative samples for determining flowsheet and metallurgical balances, preparing the deposit for production and establishing more firmly the grade and mining characteristics of the deposit. A feasibility study is then made of the engineering aspects of the project including the estimation of operating coats, the capital required to place the deposit into production, profit and return on investment. In this study, recovery of copper from solid material (obtained by leaching of chalcopyrite with oxalic acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide) with a copper oxalate structure was carried out selectively using HCl. The chemical composition of the solid was as 29.3%, 9.7%, and 13.3% for Cu, Fe, and S, respectively. Selective recovery of copper by degrading the copper oxalate structure with a low-solubility product (Ksp = 4.43 × 10−10) was performed by conventional leaching in the presence of HCl. The optimum leaching conditions were determined as 5 M of HCl concentration, 318 K of leaching temperature, 120 min of leaching time, 25 ml/g of liquid–solid ratio and 400 rpm of stirring speed. Under these conditions, approximately 77% of copper and 3% of iron were taken into the solution. According to the characterization of the leach residue that was obtained, the oxalate structure was degraded. Moreover, the results of XRD analysis showed that the sulfur (S) and cubanite (CuFe2S3) phases were mostly observed in leaching residues, and this was supported by the SEM-EDX data. Based on the results, it may be stated that selective copper extraction can be obtained from a chalcopyrite concentrate by a two-step leaching method using a conventional hydrometallurgical technique.

Future haulage cost projections led Foster Yeoman Limited into developing a fully mobile crushing and conveying system at its Torr Works quarry in Somerset, England. The purpose-built system has an effective throughput of 2,500 tonnes/hour and features an Orenstein and Koppel (O & K) manufactured walking frame, a Fuller-Traylor type 54 X 74 TC gyratory crusher, and unique mobile conveyor modules designed and manufactured by Foster Yeoman. Used in a single-bench operation in this 6 million-tonne per annum limestone aggregate quarry, the system is fed at the production face by 2 Caterpillar 992C loading shovels. The entire system is moved on a daily basis following production face locations.

Introduction In 1967, Tenneco acquired Kern County Land Co. The primary reason for the acquisition was to obtain Kern&apos;s agricultural, manufacturing, and oil interests. Included in the Kern portfolio were the core of Tenneco&apos;s present sodium leases in Sweetwater County, WY. This lease base has been ex¬panded and now consists of 62 km2 (24 sq miles). Beneath this property lies more than 500 Mt (550 million st) of economic trona ore. Following the Kern acquisition, Tenneco continued exploration and feasibility studies concerning the trona leases. The effort was accelerated in 1976. Tenneco was attracted to trona because of the favorable lease position it held, the growth rate of the Wyoming industry during the 1960s and 1970s, and the prospects for a long-term, stable business enterprise. The reserve picture was certainly attractive to a company long accustomed to the never-ending struggle to replace oil and gas reserves. In 1978, Wyoming was a boom area that had experienced rapid growth for a number of years. Unemployment was very low and vacant housing nonexistent. The prospects for soda ash were somewhat different in the 1970s than now. But it was recognized even then that a new producer would have a challenging task to compete in this business. Tenneco knew the capital burden required to build a grassroots facility during inflationary time, would have to be offset elsewhere Since labor and energy are the dominant direct costs in mining trona and producing soda ash these factors have always received a great deal of attention. Contracting and permits Environmental monitoring on the site began in late 1977. With the already mentioned considerations in mind, engineering began by mid-1978. Brown & Root Inc. was selected as the general contractor for the project. S. A. Scott & Co. was the engineering subcontractor for the mine shafts, hoists, ventilation system, and miscellaneous mine facilities. Frontier-Kemper was awarded the contract for sinking the two mine shafts. Acquisition of numerous federal, state, and local permits occupied all of 1978 and 1979. The Wyoming Industrial Siting Permit, which addresses socioeconomic issues, drew the most public interest. Siting issues were all satisfactorily resolved by negotiating reasonable stipulations with various local governmental units, school districts, and the like. Site location The Green River project location is not truly remote. It is located within 5 km (3 miles) of Interstate 80 and only about 32 km (20 miles) west of the city of Green River. Nevertheless, a substantial investment had to be made in communication and utility links to the site. These included: • A 14-km (8.5-mile) rail spur connecting with the Union Pacific Railroad at Bryan, WY. This spur has four bridge structures including one crossing Interstate 80. Most soda ash is shipped by rail, and coal is received over this line as well. • A paved 5-km (3-mile) roadway connecting to Interstate 80. • A powerline extension of about 27 km (16.5 miles), along with two new substations. • A 24-km (15-mile) waterline connecting the plant to a pump station on the Green River. The site is located on gently sloping terrain at an elevation of about 2.1 km (6800 ft). Ground conditions are good for construction. Weathered bedrock lies near the surface in most places. Geology The general geology of the Green River Basin has been well described previously. Tenneco&apos;s ore is in several superimposed evaporate beds. To solve the problem of time-consuming and low precision in updating the open-pit vehicle transportation network, a high precision road network model construction method for unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines is proposed. This method can be divided into two steps. In the first step, an improved deep learning image processing model named DeepLabv3 + C (DeepLabv3 + Concat) is presented. Then, the road information extracted by the DeepLabv3 + C network is used to construct a three-dimensional model of the open-pit mine road network. In the second step, aiming at the time-consuming problem of unmanned vehicle meeting in open-pit mines, a vehicle meeting strategy was proposed. This strategy is used to guide the navigation of unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines. Besides, the DeepLabv3 + C network is verified by comparing the mIOU (means Intersection Over Union), accuracy, and continuity of road image extraction with the mainstream networks. The road network model constructed in the first step is quantitatively analyzed, and its performance is compared with GPS trajectory clustering methods. At the end of the paper, vehicle running simulation is carried out on the road network model by using Unity (a 3D visualization simulation software). The results show that the road network model constructed by this method can meet the navigation requirements of unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines, and the feasibility of the vehicle meeting strategy is proved.

Fatigue in mining operations is a serious issue and a significant contributor to incidents and accidents. While mine operators are using or introducing new technology to monitor operator fatigue, there is little work that focuses on the subjective experience of fatigue and the use of fatigue monitoring technology. To investigate this issue, eight focus groups with a total of 44 operators of heavy haulage equipment working for two mining companies in the Mountain West of the USA participated in 1-h focus groups. The topic of the focus groups was the experience of operator fatigue and issues surrounding fatigue at the workplace. The results of the content analyses suggest that operators are well aware of the signs of fatigue, and that they understand the severity of these signs as well. In addition, they are aware of the effect of fatigue on driving performance and are using a wide range of methods to manage fatigue. Finally, based on participants’ assessment, current fatigue monitoring systems lack face validity and reliability and are perceived as not being effective. The results of this study emphasize the importance of a socio-technical systems perspective in the context of miner health and safety management. Only such a comprehensive perspective can result in improvements that are sustainable.

Mineral exploration is a key factor for success in the mining industry. However, exploration best practices are often ignored in small-scale mining. This works presents the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a methodology that measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small-scale mining with the industry best practices. The matrix has been applied to three projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the state of Pará, a small-scale manganese project in the state of Bahia, and a small-scale manganese project in the state of São Paulo. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that represent the level of maturity of the exploration program in each project and indicate priority actions for reduction of the geological uncertainty. Therefore, the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix has shown potential to be a useful tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. As a risk indicator, it may contribute to promoting investment in small-scale mining and development for communities that depend on this activity around the world.

Passive treatment of mine drainage using constructed wetlands has been employed on coal and metal mine sites since about 1985. The technology has advanced significantly since then; there are currently over 600 of these systems treating coal mine drainage in the Eastern U.S. at flow rates of hundreds of liters per minute. Passive treatment performance at three metal mines discussed in this paper has been positive for a wide variety of flows, water chemistry, and climates. The sites include a high-altitude underground copper mine, acidic seepage from a gold heap leach pad, and pumped effluent from an active underground lead mine in Missouri.

Engineers face significant challenges when determining what geometry provides the most profitable and safe stope for extraction. Several techniques and optimization algorithms have been developed in recent years, but most fail to find optimal solutions because they are heuristic or LP-based without efficient geometric constraints. This paper presents a two-dimensional binary linear programming (BLP) model for determining the optimal combination of blocks in a stope that maximizes the economic value of the layout of stopes for a sublevel deposit. The work draws from Queyranne and Wolsey’s (2017 & 2018) formulations of tight constraints for bounded up/down times in production planning problems to formulate novel and efficient geometric constraints along with geotechnical and grade constraints for the BLP stope layout optimization problem. Results from the model indicate that it is possible to formulate efficient shape constraints in LP-based approaches. The model used for the numerical example contained 144 valuable blocks out of 774 blocks, which translates into an economic value of $53.21M. The BLP model selected 60 valuable blocks and 13 waste blocks that met all constraints translating into a maximum economic value of $34.4M in 1.83 hours within a gap tolerance of 0.00%.

Lime has been produced for many centuries. The simple pot kiln was one of the first devices used in this process. It was constructed of stone often on the side of a hill to reduce construction efforts and provide easy access to the top for feeding of limestone. It was fired from below with wood and coal. The pot kiln was very small and operated on the batch principle. The kiln being cooled between each batch, the fuel consumption was horrendous. The lime quality was poor with perhaps only one half of a batch being lime of suitable quality. Of the remaining half one part would be over burned and another part underburned. For centuries the lime burning technique was improved at a barely recognizable rate. One of the first major steps forward was the introduction of the continuous process vertical lime kiln. Although at first crudely constructed, the kiln had a refractory lining. It was charged with alternate layers of limestone and solid fuel usually in the form of coke. Continuous mode of operation, larger unit size and better heat distribution resulted in greatly improved fuel economy. However, quality of lime produced still left much to be desired. One problem was contamination by ashes from solid fuel.

Magnetic metals are the granddaddy of products which may be recovered from municipal waste. Aside from hand-picking of newsprint and corrugated boxes, magnetic metals are usually the first items a resource recovery facility considers extracting from the solid waste stream. Magnetic metals from incinerator residues and from municipally mandated source segregation programs were first used in significant quantities by the Copper Industry. The ability of the Copper Industry to consume metals from the municipal solid waste stream raised everyone&apos;s hopes that there would be more markets for municipal scrap when more of it became available. Somehow something has gone wrong. It is widely acclaimed that scrap is an environmentally sound and economical source of iron. It is greatly in demand for Its contained energy. The prices that the steel industry has been willing to pay for the scrap during the past year are all the proof anyone should need that scrap Is desirable and sought after. But the very fact that I&apos;m speaking today on the markets for magnetic metals recovered from municipal waste indicates that something Is wrong. Clearly the problem is not that we do not need the scrap. The problem is we have not produced the kind of scrap that consumers are willing to buy - either through ignorance of what the consumers wanted or through a conviction that ferrous scrap is so obviously a good thing somebody will surely want it no matter what. Dr. Harvey Alter of the National Center for Resource Recovery has said "You can&apos;t sell garbage". In a sense that is only partly true. It really should be "You can&apos;t sell garbage for very long". The Steel Companies, in an effort to prove that steel is an environmentally desirable packaging medium, have bought some scrap that can only be described as garbage. They are to be commended for doing so. The fault lies not with the Steel Company for taking and paying for "garbage" but with the producer of that poorly prepared scrap. Far every instance where the steel industry has purchased the often undesirable product from resource recovery facility there are several magnetic installations sitting Idle because someone forgot the most essential part of producing the magnetic product - selling it to someone.

A prototype expert advisor was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to systematically offer advice on the control of a Florida phosphate operation. The PC based system receives input from remote sensors for circuit parameters such as feed rate, reagent addition, and pH and from operator entered information such as the quality of the concentrate and tailings in each of the coarse, fine, and amine flotation circuits. The computer evaluates the information using rules obtained from industry representatives and Bureau flotation experts. Recommended actions and questions are displayed to quickly guide the operator to a problem within the flotation circuit and suggest a solution. This process control system could provide more uniformity among the flotation operators and also serve as a trainer for new operators. In addition, it represents a step toward fully automated systems for phosphate flotation.
