"Acid mine drainage (AMD) is produced when exposed pyrite (FeS2) reacts with air and water to form an acidic solution that usually contain contaminant levels of heavy metal ions. AMD can potentially contaminate surface water and soil if not treated. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the removal of dissolved aluminum, iron and zinc metal ions from natural AMD using water treatment residue (WTR), a low-cost adsorbent. WTR sorbent generated as waste material in drinking water treatment plants (WTP) was characterized and utilized for the sorption of Al, Fe and Zn in AMD collected from an abandoned coal mine site in southern Illinois that generates approximately 20 gallons per minute of AMD. Sorption experiments were performed using batch technique to obtain rate and equilibrium data. The effects of various parameters on sorption capacities of WTR were observed by varying contact time, pH of the AMD and WTR dosage. The adsorption studies showed rapid uptake in general for the first 80 minutes for Fe and Zn but much earlier for Zn. Further increase in contact time did not show significant change in equilibrium concentration indicating the onset of adsorption equilibrium. After the batch treatment of the AMD water with the WTR, the removal of Al, Fe and Zn were 99.8%, 99.85% and 95.5% respectively. The pH of AMD increased from 2.64 to a near neutral point of 6.74 after treatment. The laboratory results show that the low-cost WTR, which is an abundantly available industrial waste, has proven potential to significantly reduce the high metal ions in acid mine drainage. INTRODUCTION Mining activities provide the basic raw materials needed for infrastructure development and economic growth world-wide. However, it is well recognized that mining activities have been the cause of a variety of environmental pollutions, including AMD. Water seeping out of an old abandoned mine is generally characterized by low-pH with heavy loads of dissolved sulfates (SO4) and metal species such as Fe, Al and Zn among other dissolved elements categorized as toxic metals. The Bureau of Land Management’s Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) program reported the existence of about 46,000 abandoned mines in the United States. Several environmental problems have been reported to be associated with these mined out sites such as heavy metal poisoning, loss of vegetation, air pollution etc. (Boulanger & Gorman, 2004)."

Efficient design of grinding circuits for efficient production of ultrafine material requires rapid feedback of information concerning the fineness of material leaving the grinding device. Generating this information requires efficient sampling and adequate rapid characterization of the material leaving the grinding machinery. Recent developments-in electrooptic inspection of dry end wet material leaving a grinding device are critically reviewed. New methods for characterizing ultrafines are discussed. A rapid operating automated cybernetic (intelligent) permeability device for automatic control of grinding circuits using Blaine index and other fineness indices is described.

Top-down constructed large-diameter (up to 90 m or 300 ft) shaft design and constructability issues present an interesting suite of challenges and opportunities highlighted in this paper. The study covers 2D and 3D finite element models used to analyze various failure modes, evaluate the shaft liner and internal structures' response to seismic loading, assist in segment design and assess final structural design tradeoffs. Efforts to achieve economic advantage over conventional heavy civil practices have prompted innovative solutions for ring and segment design, ring build assembly and annulus backfill grouting. The paper introduces a new rock mass cuttability classification (RMCC) system for roadheaders used in coal mines. It includes performance prediction models for both axial and transverse roadheaders, based on six parameters: uniaxial compressive strength, Cerchar abrasivity index, volumetric joint count, strike and dip of joints, joint aperture, and groundwater condition. The study validates the RMCC system through field and laboratory measurements, showing high correlation coefficients between net cutting rates and RMCC indices.

The movement of solid particles in a liquid represents an area of interest in many fields of science and technology. Knowledge of the behavior and characteristics of solid-liquid suspensions is of great importance to many areas of mineral processing. In order to characterize a solid-liquid system, the following factors must usually be considered: a) density of the liquid b) rheological properties of the liquid c) density of the solid particle d) size and shape of the solid particle e) volume fraction of solid particles f) relative motion of solid particles and liquid phase Other variables such as the effect of the containing vessel walls, Brownian movement, inter-particle friction, fluid slip and electrostatic effects, are important in special circumstances. Thus it is evident that a complete theoretical treatment is not possible covering all situations. Studies of the kinematic behavior of solid particles in a liquid have been approached by two methods: 1) Assessing the movement of a single particle and extrapolating to a multi-particle system; 2) Modifying the continuum mechanics of single-phase liquids in such a way as to account for the presence of solid particles. The first approach in general utilizes the method of particle mechanics. Extension to a multi-particle system gives rise to very complicated mathematical computation. The creeping motion equations do, however, furnish a practical, useful basis for achieving a uniform treatment and a better understanding of the phenomena. This approach is useful in the study of sedimentation and hindered settling processes.

According to critical statistical studies, antimony is one of the rarest elements in the world, and global resources could be exhausted by 2050. In light of these observations, its extraction will be costly due to poor-quality ore, deep mining, remote locations, and high energy consumption. In the present study, an alkaline leaching process was carried out on stibnite concentrate to evaluate the effect of reaction parameters on the percentage of antimony extraction. The leaching efficiencies of different sulfur and hydroxide sources were studied and compared to one another to create a better understanding of the reaction process. Kinetic models were investigated to identify the reaction pathway and calculate the activation energy. The activation energy of the stibnite dissolution was assessed as 19.13 kJ/mol using a two-dimensional diffusion-reaction model. The value of activation energy indicates the quantity of energy necessary for a reaction to proceed. As expected, potassium hydroxide leaching was significantly more successful than was sodium hydroxide; however, in terms of economics, the use of sodium hydroxide was found to be more cost-efficient. Interestingly, this finding indicated that caustic leaching is still the most effective method for stibnite extraction.

Central Mexico's mining districts, opened centuries ago during the Spanish conquest, still form the backbone of metal mining in the country today. Beginning at Chihuahua City, the Second Mexican Mining Rail Excursion traveled southeast from camp to camp through this major mining area to Taxco. Improved exploration, exploitation, and beneficiation methods have permitted continuous mining of many old deposits, and led to the discovery of new ones. Minerals not sought by early miners-lead, zinc, copper, and fluorite-now contribute substantially to mining activity in central Mexico. Of Mexico's five physiographic provinces, the rail excursion passed through two: the Mesa Central, and the Sierra Madre Occidental. The Mesa Central province is a wide tableland with basin and range topography, containing important base metal deposits. Mining in this region is primarily of limestone replacement ore bodies. Massive deposits form horizontal mantos or vertical chimneys. In northern Zacatecas, the Santa Eulalia and Naica mines demonstrated this character. The Sierra Madre Occidental lies west of Mesa Central in northern states, then widens to almost the entire width of the country from outside Mexico City to the southern border. The area consists of volcanic beds, several kilometers thick. These intermediate volcanics are primarily andesitic, of Tertiary age. Resting on older strata of adjoining physiographic divisions, the volcanic beds are overlain by a thick series of acidic flows and tuffs. Economic mineralization in the Sierra Madre Occidental is vein-type, primarily gold and silver. Mines at Fresnillo, Guanajuato, Pachuca, and Taxco contribute to the claim that this region is the center for precious metals in Mexico. A third type of mineralization, contact metamorphic deposits, is commercial at Santa Eulalia. First Stop, Santa Eulalia Mine tours began with the Santa Eulalia unit, located 25 km east of Chihuahua City. Mining in the region dates back to the early 1700s. The oxidation zone was worked until 1790, but mining declined until Asarco arrived in the early 1900s, building a selective flotation plant for treating primary sulfides. Asarco still owns 34% of Industrial Minera Mexico, S.A. (IMMSA), operator of the Santa Eulalia mine. Santa Eulalia currently has a milling capacity of 850 t/d. The San Antonio and Buena Tierra mines provide feedstock. Head grades at San Antonio, the mine participants toured, average 80-120 g/t of silver, 1.5-4.5% lead, 4-16% zinc, and 0.1-2.5% copper. Tin and vanadium were also recovered between 1930 and 1940. Estimated proven and probable reserves total about 7.6 Mt, although 1.8 Mt of reserves are located in areas of high water pressure and volume, which makes extraction difficult. Water is a significant production problem at the San Antonio mine. In one area, an AX drill hole encountered 2.6 m3/min (700 gal/min) at a pressure of 2.5 kPa. The study investigates the segregation of iron and titanium in iron sand concentrate pellets reduced using coal under an isothermal-temperature gradient profile. The results show that metallic iron migrates to the surface while titanium and other oxides move to the center of the pellet. The study provides insights into the reduction process and the behavior of iron and titanium during heat treatment.

Recently. researchers at The University of Alabama have developed a two-step method for the treatment of phosphorus sludge that includes bulk removal of phosphorus by physical separation techniques followed by remediation of the residual P4 in the sludge using a novel wet air oxidation technique known as "HSAD", Tests made on samples of the electric furnace phosphorus sludge have demonstrated that essentially complete and fast removal of the P4 in the sludge can be achieved by the HSAD wet oxidation treatment, Further studies were made to determine the applicability of the two-step process on sludges of various origins. P4 contents different pre-treatment and storage conditions, The present work discusses the mechanisms and factors controlling the HSAD wet air oxidation remediation approach.

Rib brows present a significant safety hazard in underground coal mines in the United States. To address this issue, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST) are developing a practical tool to assess both the potential of rib brow formation and the stability of any formed brows. As part of this effort, a monitoring study was conducted to assess the potential for rib brow formation in coal pillar ribs. This study was conducted in a room-and-pillar coal mine where coal pillar ribs are prone to developing rib brows. Although no rib brows formed in the instrumented pillar, data from monitoring and visual observations provided valuable insights into the loading mechanisms impacting the instrumented pillar. These findings helped identify factors that may reduce rib brow formation, including the cavability of the roof in mined areas, the applied rib support, the strength of rock partings, and the overall integrity of the coal seam. The scientific findings published in the case study aid in assessing the potential of brow formation, offering additional evidence for the need to improve rib control methods in underground coal mines.

The idea of using apron feeders for in directly feeding crushers is not a new one, it has been used for many years. To the best of our knowledge, the first apron feeder was used for bulk material handling in 1893. Since that time many design innovations have been introduced, with perhaps the most effective one being, the application of crawler tractor components in the feeder construction. This design was first introduced to the mining industry in 1954 by, national iron company. These feeders were used in the handling of run-of-mine iron ore on the Minnesota iron range, at the rate of 1,000 ltph. The material was fed over a grizzly to a jaw type of crusher. The crusher output was also handled by an apron feeder. Today, the apron feeder is being used in hard rock surface mine operations feeding crushers at rates of 5,500 ltph and over.

The lanthanon compounds are becoming increasingly more important for ceramic and allied applications. As the supply increases and the cost decreases, further development of these interesting materials will undoubtedly lead to new applications and an increased demand. Recent improvements in separation processes have lead to high purity in the individual lanthanon oxides. This report includes short discussions on the mineralogy of the ores as raw materials, and on the separation processes required to produce the pure individual lanthanon oxides in useful quantities. To discuss the presently known applications of lanthanon oxides, this general review is divided into the following categories: A. Glasses, Glazes, and Porcelain Enamels. B. Refractories and Abrasives. C. Electronic Ceramics. D. Nuclear Ceramics.

Mine worker exposure to respirable coal dust and silica dust can result in coal workers’ pneumoconiosis and silicosis which are occupational respiratory diseases that have no cure and are ultimately fatal. In 2021 the Mine Safety and Health Administration reported just over 11,000 operating metal/nonmetal mines with the potential for silica dust exposure for just under 200,000 miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts respirable coal and silica dust research associated with mining through its Office of Mine Safety and Health Research. NIOSH respirable coal and silica dust research began under the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), which initially examined silica dust, progressing to include coal dust, with a stronger focus after 1969 with the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act. A review of extramural research to develop real-time respirable silica dust monitor is presented along with a brief history of silica dust regulation.

The release of fluid inclusions has a strong potential for the unintentional activation of pyrite during flotation. The present study aims to characterize fluid inclusions in a natural pure pyrite. The results indicate that a certain amount of fluid inclusions exist in the pyrite. The fluid inclusions assume a variety of shapes, including long strips, oval shapes and irregular shapes, with sizes that range from a few microns to dozens of microns. From the EDS results of hollow positions that resulted from the fracture of the fluid inclusions on the pyrite surface, certain amounts of Al, Cr, C, O, Ag and Cu were clearly detected; these elements were not detected in FeS2 pyrite itself. The contents of the inclusions were released into solution when the sample was subjected to a grinding process. Under experimental conditions of 2 g of pyrite cleaned in 40 mL of pure deionized water under an inert atmosphere, the concentrations of Cu, Fe, Cl- and SO4 2- released from the inclusions reached concentrations of 3.29 × 10-6, 32.52 × 10-6, 51.57 × 10-6 and 75.90 × 10-6 mol/L, respectively. These values are significantly greater than those from the experimental nonoxidative and oxidative dissolution of the pyrite. The fluid inclusions of pyrite were, therefore, concluded to represent the dominant sources of Cu, Fe, Cl- and SO4 2- in the aqueous solution. The present investigation provides a new understanding of the source of the unavoidable metal ions in the pulp and may benefit understanding of the flotation theory and environmental geochemistry.

Bureau of Mines researchers developed and tested equipment to measure corrosion rates on a commercial-scale mill. Bench-scale experiments were designed for duplicating ore grinding conditions closely enough that realistic rate determinations can be made in laboratory tests. Rates measured in a laboratory system compared favorably with those measured in the field. Cast steel was found to have corrosion rates in a copper mill and laboratory test cell of 22 and 21 mpy, respectively. Corrosion was found to account for less than 5 pct of the total grinding media wear in the operations studied.

Recent three-dimensional surveying techniques have opened up new opportunities for the registration and monitoring of underground cavities. There are essentially two main methods available: Laser scanning, which is used both above surface and increasingly underground, and photogrammetry, which is also experiencing a renaissance with techniques like structure from motion through the algorithm-based orientation of high-resolution images. Both methods provide the capability to reconstruct reality by various 3-D products like points clouds and meshed models. However, they differ significantly in the steps of registration and calculation as well as in the resulting evaluation options.

Interactions between human beings and their work environment require the body to regulate its temperature by balancing heat production and loss. Comfortable environmental conditions are crucial for keeping workers safe and healthy and to maintain a suitable level of productivity. However, achieving a proper core body temperature may become challenging under different conditions, especially in high heat-generating workplaces such as hot underground mines. Because hot underground mines have the potential to expose workers to heat stress, compliance with standardized and regulated indices and criteria is distinctly required. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the current research on heat stress and strain in hot underground mines, collected from published and specialized literature. General definitions, statistics of heat-related accidents in mining, overview of the indices, standards, and recommendations for heat stress are provided herein.

Lidding over or tunneling existing transportation infrastructure is currently under review in several U.S. cities. The main reasons for this are the use of the created space for urban development, the reduction of noise and exhaust fumes for the residents, and, thus, a significant increase in the quality of life. The main aspects to be considered during the planning process are (1) total investment and operational costs, (2) impact of construction works on current traffic, (3) safety and fire protection, and (4) socio-environmental issues. The paper presents some basic planning principles, and experiences of recent urban highway coverages are shared.

The AMAX of Canada Limited Kitsault mine is located approximately 150 kilometers, by air, north of Prince Rupert, British Columbia at the head end of A1 ice Arm, just east of the southern tip of the Alaskan Panhandle. It is presently only accessible by sea or air, although a road is being constructed by the company which will provide access to Terrace, a commercial centre with a population of about 15,000. The topography is typically coastal mountainous with peaks rising to 2,100 meters around the head end of the inlet. The concentrator is at an elevation of 515 meters with the mine at 630 meters. This open pit molybdenum mine was previously operated between 1968 and 1972 by British Columbia Molybdenum Limited, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation. AMAX of Canada Limited has spent $194 million to refurbish and expand this operation.

Sandstone escarpments surrounding western coal-bearing plateaus serve as critical habitat for animal species. Effects of mining subsidence on escarpment stability are not well documented; therefore, regulatory agencies may limit extraction of coal reserves underlying escarpments. Because millions of tons of this coal exist on Federal Lands, associated public revenues from Federal royalties, and valuable coal reserves, risk being lost. The U. S. Bureau of Mines is using numerical modeling techniques to analyze effects of subsidence on escarpment stability. Finite element models that incorporate bedding plane slip, gob formation, and movement along joints simulate escarpment subsidence observed in the field.
