The pyrometallurgical industry plays a vital role in producing metals for our modern life. With growing demand of metals and declining grade of mineable ore, innovations become critical for many mining companies. It is necessary to conduct a review of recent improvements to the pyrometallurgical industry on analytical measurement techniques, process and equipment improvements, and computer-based modeling/simulations. Many of those innovations tend to be applied to wider metals, and not be restricted by a specific metal. Therefore, we tried to cover the wide applications of many improvements to wider range of metals to reflect this trend. The challenge of a lack of robust measurement techniques under high-temperature conditions within a furnace hinders optimization of a pyrometallurgical process. Some future opportunities in the pyrometallurgical industry on analytical measurement techniques, computer modeling, and processes and equipment have also been outlined and discussed.

"In 2008, the world quietly hit a milestone that did not receive much fanfare or publicity, but it hit one that marked a turning point in the history of mankind and the way the planet is and will be inhabited in the future. It was in 2008 that, for the first time, more than half of the world’s population, an estimated 3.3 billion people, resided in urban areas. The world’s population had moved from being a majority of agricultural and rural society to an urban society. Andrew Whalley, deputy chairman for Grimshaw Architects, said this change in where and how people live will continue to increase urban populations and, by 2050, it is estimated that more than 6.4 billion people will live in urban areas. To meet these needs, Whalley, speaking during the keynote session of the 2105 Cutting Edge conference in Denver, CO, said future cities will have to be reimagined and redesigned to be more efficient. A large part of that design will be in the infrastructure of those cities.At the Fourth Annual Cutting Edge Conference, Sept. 21-23, much of the discussion was around how the tunneling and underground construction industries improve cities in a number of ways, including societal, environmental and in overall efficiency. There was talk, not just about the improvements that society enjoys at the completion of such projects, but also about the challenges faced by the owner and contractor in the construction of such projects.The conference, titled Urban Tunneling, brought together some of the top minds in the industry to not only discuss the issues faced today, but also those that will shape the industry in the future.For his part, Whalley spoke about a number of projects around the world and how they have impacted society in ways beyond simply providing a better means for transportation of people or water. Notably, he spoke about the Crossrails project in London.London is a city of 8.6 million people and a history that dates back nearly 2,000 years. It is a great example of the challenges the industry faces in bringing modern efficiencies to an established city.Running more than 100 km (62 miles) with more than 42 km (26 miles) of tunnels passing through 40 stations, including 10 new stations, the project is the largest in Europe and will transform the way people move about the city."

Mining investment decisions are difficult since decision analysis is often based on scarce information. The sources of uncertainty in large mining investment projects are particularly numerous and are present in all evaluation stages. Hence the feasibility decision for projects of this nature will largely depend on how well these sources of uncertainty are managed to achieve bankable risk levels. The risk associated to the construction stages of a mining project is particularly difficult to quantify, mainly because the large number of variables affecting constructive yields, and the complex interactions among constructive resources. This investigation focuses on developing quantitative simulation models and tools to increase the value of a mining project by means of an optimization of the preproduction equipment fleet. The models were validated through their application in the Chuquicamata Underground Mining Project.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of fluorspar from 35 domestic and 50 foreign, mines and deposits in 13 countries. Only 6 domestic properties are considered to be economic reserves, as 29 domestic deposits were found to have an average total cost of production that was uneconomical at a breakeven (0 pct) DCFROR. The 50 foreign properties evaluated were selected to represent at least 85 pct of the known demonstrated fluorspar resources located in market economy countries and China. All evaluated foreign operations were found to be economic to marginally economic in January 1984 dollars. World demonstrated ore reserves of 344 million metric tons (mt) containing 123 million mt of CaF2 were evaluated for the 56 operations. Average total costs needed to cover all costs over the life of each operation were determined for all recoverable fluorspar products. Comparisons of mining, beneficiation, and transportation costs per mt of fluorspar concentrate illustrate advantages between countries. Of the three largest producing countries, China, with its high-grade, low-cost operations had the lowest weighted average total cost of production ($38/mt concentrate). Mexico was next at $54/mt concentrate, and South Africa needed an average of $90/mt of concentrate to cover all costs of production for its low grade deposits.

Archean supracrustal rocks of the South Pass greenstone belt of western Wyoming have been the State's most prolific source of gold and iron ore. Actual gold production statistics are incomplete, but as much as 400 to 500 thousand ounces may have been mined with some silver and tungsten as a by-product. Iron ore was also mined from the greenstone belt for 22 years, and production totaled more than 90 million tons. Immediately south of the exposed greenstone belt in the Oregon Buttes area, Tertiary boulder conglomerate, which has been eroded from the granite-greenstone terrain, may contain a gold resource of 28.5 million ounces (Love and others, 1978). The amount of gold placered from stream alluvium derived from these Tertiary conglomerates is unknown.

Thunder Basin Coal Company received the 1987 Wyoming Excellence in Surface Mining Award for construction of the State's first major sediment control reservoir to be designed using the new settleable sol ids standard. Use of this standard resulted in construction cost savings of more than $250,000; reduced water quality monitoring; enhanced downstream channel stability because of more natural sediment loading; allowed simultaneous establishment of permanent waterfowl and fisheries habitat; and provided a quality recreational site. This article will address factors associated with the design and construction of that sediment reservoir and the benefits that were realized. Retreat mining is one of the most hazardous operations conducted underground. One of the keys to miner safety and an efficient recovery of the reserves is to design adequately sized production pillars to prevent pillar squeezes, excessive pillar spalling, severe floor heave, roof falls, and pillar bumps. Currently, few pillar design approaches are available which consider the abutment pressures generated by the gob. The Bureau of Mines is developing a method called Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) to aid in the design of retreating sections. Back analysis of 42 case studies indicates that ARMPS can be helpful in predicting stability during retreat mining operations.

Mineral Resource Technologies(MRT) and Michigan Technological University (MTU)finalized an agreement that permits MRT to offer an advanced carbon removal technology process for coal fly ash from an ash residue generated by utilities. The agreement encompasses the dominant existing US patents using a wet process for fly ash enhancement. The wet process for coal beneficiation of a fly ash product involves four steps. First, a slurry mixture is formed of a fly ash material and a liquid. Second, gravity is used to separate and collect a first-material fraction of the fly ash, having a density less than the liquid. This is done by skimming off the flotation slurry material.

By its nature, seismology has been a data intensive field since the first digital computers were introduced in the 1950s. The first empirical models were developed in the same period and are still widely used today, for instance, the Gutenberg-Richter frequency-magnitude relationship (Gutenberg and Richter, 1956). Machine learning (ML) methods make it possible to redefine these empirical models using large datasets and examining considerably more parameters, where their significance to the problem being addressed is methodically and repeatably evaluated using robust statistical methods. In this paper we develop a simple logistic model for the short-term prediction of seismic events above a threshold magnitude from a mine’s event catalogue comprising more than a million events with 14 basic parameters from which a pool of over 830 derived parameters was developed, covering a series of 11 precursory time windows. The logistic model was fitted stepwise using SAS with α = 0.025 for both entry and acceptance. 25 variables from the pool met the acceptance criterion. The findings were surprising in that parameters a rock engineer or seismologist might have expected to be the most significant in the logistic model were not; instead, it was an increase in standard deviation of the immediately-prior seismic magnitudes that carried the most weight, followed by the average maximum source displacement and median apparent volume change. These findings make intuitive sense because the increasing scatter of the magnitude shows an increasing number of large events being recorded that could be indicative of instability in the system that could lead to large events. The model is rudimentary and enormous scope exists for more exploration in terms of data pre-processing, model types, and response variable definitions.

Stillwater Mining Company is developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine approximately 21 km (13 miles) west of their existing Nye operation in south central Montana. A 5650 meter (18,550-foot) tunnel is required to gain access to the ore bearing horizon (J-M Reef). Access and primary mine development can be accelerated through the use of two 4.6 meter (15-foot) diameter tunnel boring machines (TBM). One TBM was purchased new while the other was purchased used. Machine specifications, site support facilities, portal/launch chamber construction, TBM assembly, startup and operation are discussed in this paper.

"There is certainly no argument that LED lighting systems have taken a strong foothold in the lighting marketplace over the last several years. This has even proven true in the world of transportation and transit lighting, for which new LED cobra head style luminaires are replacing traditional HID cobra head luminaires on North America’s roadwaysand linear LED light fixtures are replacing conventional linear fluorescent light fixtures in North American rail transit facilities. However, LED technology has taken a while longer to penetrate the very specific market of vehicular tunnel lighting in this continent. Though both the New York/New Jersey Holland and Lincoln Tunnels have recently been retrofitted with LED lighting, and an LED Lighting RFP is currently out for Boston’s Central Artery Tunnels, very few vehicular tunnels in North America to date have been illuminated with LED light fixtures. This is largely because cost effective LED lighting, that met our typically stringent tunnel lighting standards, was until recently simply unattainable. However, with the rapid advances in LED technology over recent years, owners and specifiers of North American tunnel lighting projects have finally begun to adopt LED lighting systems as the norm. In fact, a recent Lux Fit/Yole Development “LED in Road and Street Lighting Report” stated that “LED luminaire growth will be driven firstly by tunnel lighting, and then relayed into highway, road, residential and amenity lighting applications starting in 2014.” 1 Our highways are continually becoming more congested. As a result, Provincial and State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) are constantly looking for innovative ways to improve traffic flow. One way DOTs are now helping to ease congestion is by expanding the use of tunnels and long underpasses in large interchange reconstruction projects. With less available right-of-way to work with, and the high costs of maintaining elevated bridge structures over the years, it often makes more sense to “go under” (rather than over) the traffic congestion points. With the addition of these new tunnels and long underpasses comes the issue of proper illumination within these structures, for a safe and efficient driving task. DOTs use recommended lighting practices and guidelines for highway lighting, which include specific criteria for tunnels, set by either the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) or the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). However, both IESNA and AASHTO point out that these recommended practices and guidelines are not a mandate, and DOTs are free to make their own decisions about lighting criteria. Accordingly, effectively illuminating tunnels is often times a challenge. This paper will examine the key considerations of the tunnel lighting application in generalas well as what LEDs now bring to the table and how, accordingly, traditional lighting technologies will be phased out in the future illumination of tunnels."

In one form or another, almost all the known elements have been experimented with and tested for various electrical applications. The two major areas for which minerals are used in electronics are as conductors and semiconductors. Conductors provide the means to transport and distribute electricity, while the main application of semiconductors has been to manipulate electricity. Silicon is the most widely recognized semiconductor material, but gallium, indium, and germanium are rated as the most important metals to the semiconductor industry for future and near future technologies.

Low-grade iron ore received from the West Singhbhum area of Jharkhand state in India was used to develop a beneficiation flow sheet to remove alumina (Al2O3) and silica (SiO2 ) from the ore to get iron (Fe)-rich product for steel plants. Mineral characterization showed that the main mineral constituents present in the head sample are goethite, limonite, hematite, quartz, clay and gibbsite. The head sample contained about 49.2 percent Fe, 8.79 percent alumina and 12.01 percent silica. The received iron ore sample is amenable to upgradation through beneficiation to get pellet grade concentrate. The beneficiation process was established, involving crushing, screening, jigging, spiral separation, size reduction, desliming and magnetic separation. The process showed significant enrichment in Fe values to 63.5 percent Fe in concentrate, from 49.2 percent Fe. From the developed flow sheet, it is possible to obtain pellet grade fines with 63.5 percent Fe, 2.92 percent SiO2 and 2.61 percent Al2O3 with 50.6 percent weight recovery. The overall tailing loss is 49.4 percent with 34.3 percent Fe, 21.28 percent SiO2 and 14.64 percent Al2O3

Today’s mining occurs in a dynamic world of conflicting objectives. Mining companies have to look further than a traditional cash flow analysis to determine the potential value of developing a mine. In particular, proposals for new mine developments undergo rigorous scrutiny by a variety of stakeholders including regulators, NGO’s, and the local communities. From a business risk perspective, how mining companies address stakeholder concerns can have a dramatic impact on the success of the project. In today’s mining environment mining companies must continue to ‘walk the talk’ to stay in business, particularly during downturns in the business cycle. Falconbridge’s Raglan Mine is an example of a project that was successfully developed in a region that is sensitive from many perspectives, including environmental, socio economic, and regulatory. Close working relationships with local stakeholders along with strong environmental management systems are necessary elements of continued success for the project.

Stimulated by current $0.80 to $1.20 per pound price tag of copper, considerable interest and activity have been generated in the copper mining camps throughout the world, and especially in the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico copper belt. Under these economically favorable conditions, many of the marginal oxide-copper deposits, as well as newly discovered prospects, are under scrutiny for possible exploitation. For both the known deposits and new prospects, the big question facing the mine operator is the selection of the best method for processing these economically attractive oxide-copper deposits. Several variations of the hydrometallurgical processes are currently available for treating oxide-copper ores which can be mined by the open-pit method. Basically, these processes involve preparing the ore for application of an acid solution, applying the solution to the ore, and recovery of the metal from the pregnant solution. Dump leaching, heap leaching, vat leaching, agitation leaching and, in more recent times, in situ leaching or solution mining in combination with well established cementation process or the newly developed solvent extraction-electrowinning system have all been employed or have been investigated for the recovery of copper from oxide ores. Of these processes, dump, heap and vat leaching have been successfully practiced for treating oxide-copper ores. Agitation leaching is a relatively newcomer and has been adopted from the experiences of uranium and gold processing. Finally, the inplace leaching technique is the latest process to be suggested for possible treatment of oxide-copper ores.

A 1/20 scale experimental dozer push test rig was designed and constructed to quantify the expected production rates (loose cubic meters per hour) for dozers operating in hard-rock bulk push applications. The particle size distribution of the material employed in the test rig was modeled on a fragmented muckpile representative of that for a typical surface copper/gold mine overburden. Buckingham Pi theory was applied to mathematically develop factors for scaling up dozer productivity parameters, including blade loads and push times. Dozer production rates were investigated for various dozing distances and slope angles. A series of instantaneous productivity curves were produced which are applicable for use in hard-rock dozer push operations. The productivity curves produced demonstrate that dozer productivity declines rapidly over the range of 10 to 40 m.

"One of the most common emissions from detonating explosives are nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are potentially deadly if inhaled. Lab studies estimate emission quantities, though great variation is shown based on site-specific conditions, and lab tests may not fully represent field results. Field VALUES (have not been measured due to the vast area affected. OSMRE recently promised to release a ruling regarding surface mine NOx production. Once the ruling is implemented, it may eventually be necessary to monitor site-specific NOx production from blasting. A small unmanned aerial vehicle system (sUAS) is able to carry a NOx gas monitor, rapidly travel to the blast location, and to follow resulting clouds of dust and emission gasses. This project will perform laboratory tests to expand on current estimations, determine an optimal method for collecting data, and evaluate the ability for this unique application of sUAS to assist in health risk assessment for mine employees and nearby communities. Additionally, large initial NOx concentrations do not necessarily correlate to unsafe conditions, and this project will be ground breaking in observance of surface blasting emission dispersion. The project is still in early phases at the time of submission for this paper (Nov 1, 2017). Therefore, this paper focuses primarily on summarizing background research related to the project and a description of the project plan. INTRODUCTION Nitrogen oxide gases (NOx) are common emission by products of surface mine blasting. These gases can potentially cause risk to human health and safety, both for mine workers and communities near the blast site. However, these emission quantities are largely unmeasured and no attempts have been made to relate these VALUES (to human health risk. The primary objectives of this project are to determine actual quantities of emission gases produced during surface blasting, to evaluate immediate and long-term risks to nearby people, communities, and ecosystems, to develop a system for mine employees to easily monitor emission and risk levels, and then provide guidelines for mitigating health risks based on a location’s emission results. BACKGROUND Current research regarding health risk produced by surface mine blasting NOx emissions is extremely lacking. Estimations have been made based on laboratory research, though these same test results show wide ranges of possible gas quantities produced based on site-specific conditions. Even if these estimations are accurate, no method has been created to relate gas quantity produced to human exposure concentrations. To further understand this field, background research was studied pertaining to blasting emission gas formation, laboratory and field measurements, harmful effects of blasting emission gases, and relevant government regulations. Economical dewatering of ultra-fine (minus 74 m) clean coal slurry produced in column flotation to a 20 percent or lower moisture level will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced fine coal cleaning processes. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of three dewatering techniques, namely, hyperbaric, vacuum and screen bowl centrifuge, in dewatering of ultra-fine (D50 -25 m) clean coal slurry produced by the 'Ken-Flote' columns operating at the Powell Mountain Coal Company, St. Charles, Virginia. he hyperbaric filter using 3 bar pressure and 1650 cake formation angle, provided a filter cake with 23.6 percent moisture with a throughput of 800 Kg/m2-h and air consumption of 868 Nm3/t (460 scfm/t). The vacuum filter with 30 percent submergence provided a filter cake with 27.8 percent moisture with a throughput of 122 Kg/m2-h. The screen bowl centrifuge provided a dewatered product containing 32.9 percent moisture at a feed rate of 450 Kg/hr, however, the solids capture was only 65 percent. Addition of 1 Kg/t of a cationic surfactant provided filter cakes with 19.1 percent, 23 percent, and 34 percent moisture using hyperbaric, vacuum, and centrifuge, respectively. Similarly, addition of 0.5 Kg/ton of copper chloride lowered filter cake moisture to 20.7 percent and 24.8 percent, using hyperbaric and vacuum. With the centrifuge no improvement in filter cake moisture was noted. However, use of 80 Kg/ton of 'orimulsion' in the centrifuge provided dewatered product containing 26 percent moisture, and the solids capture increased from 65 to 95 percent. The dewatered product appeared dry and was easily handleable.

Breakthroughs in software technology and in computer hardware capabilities have opened new opportunities to develop more accurate process simulators and to reduce the operating time to reasonable levels. As a result, there are several new simulation packages being commercialized for modeling coal preparation plants and pulverized coal-fired power plants, and the users of these packages are reporting significant improvements in process efficiency and operating costs by implementing the simulators' results. This paper provides an overview of some of the models currently in use at CQ Inc., including the ASPEN PLUS"" Coal Cleaning Simulator, the Ultramax® process optimization software package, and EPRI's Coal Quality Impact Model?. Case histories of specific applications are also presented.
