In underground stopes that require more than minimal support, backfill is almost universally used. The term cut and fill stopingis used in a broad sense in this section, which describes underground mining methods requiring support. Support in stopes can be classified as local or short-term and general or long-term. Local support for the back of a stope, for example, can be accomplished with rock bolts or timber stulls. General support for the walls of the stope is provided by backfill. Local support provides a safe working place for the stope miners. General support, provided by backfill, preserves the access way to the stope and prevents large scale dilution of ore. If it had not been for the almost unbelievable adventures that came before and after, the last ten months of 19 15 would have been exciting enough for anyone. As it was they were a cheerful interlude. I spent most of the time on our Warren operations catching up on a lot of underground work and visiting Ajo every few weeks to see if my Chuquicamata visit might help solve the New Cornelia problem. While the difficulties were finally solved, at times they seemed almost hopeless. About all I could do to help was to make sure that the ore sent to the pilot plants represented the average ore that must be treated in the final 5000 tpd mill. Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway worked tirelessly with the best consulting advice they could obtain. Credit for the final success was due chiefly to their efforts. Since our old group had given up its "Merry Widow" home in Warren, a few of us got rooms in the company-built Cole Building over the Warren grocery store. This included Jim Lewis, Roy Mitchell, Steve Landon, Paul Stevens, and Hubert d'Autremont who came from Duluth to join our legal staff. Later we rented a small house two blocks from the Calumet and Arizona office. With the now flourishing country club only a 10-min walk away, and an electric car running to it every half hour or so, we were able to give parties in return for the hospitality of our friends. One of the most pleasant episodes came by luck a few days after I got back from Chile. Chester Congdon, a leading director in Calumet and Arizona, with his wife and their daughters, Elizabeth and Helen, spent a couple of days at the Greenway house before making an auto- mobile trip across the desert from Tucson to Ajo. At the same time I arranged to examine the small but rich Bush and Baxter copper mine a few miles from Tucson. The capacity calculation of complex transportation systems involving variable activity times such as encountered in the mining industry are often worked out by means of simulation, which reconstructs waiting times and cycle times. The queuing theory, which mathematically calculates waiting times, has been used mainly to describe the, phenomena. This is due partly to the difficulties encountered in modelling complex systems and partly to the difficulty of reconciling the required time distribution laws with the real phenomena by means of the queuing theory. It is, however, obvious that formulas for capacity calculations would be preferable to simulation procedures because of their higher calculation speed, shorter and more flexible programs and shorter programming work. The calculation procedure presented in this paper is composed of some rather simple models, which are based on the queuing theory, and on some probabilistic and some deterministic considerations. The models are supported by observations, and to some extent by simulations. It has been attempted to find all the components of the cycle time and to include them in a comprehensive model. It is the intention to demonstrate that even quite complex mine transportation systems can be treated by means of the queuing theory with the advantages mentionned above and, without sacrificing the precision of the estimates. The speed of calculation of a wide range of parameter combinations is such that the procedure can be used extensively by a project engineer in the search for optimal modifications of the entire transportation system.

Machine manufacturers’ recommendations on maintenance strategies of capital-intensive draglines are not always based on real data and therefore lead to losses from downtime. This paper proposes a preventive maintenance strategy for a dragline deployed in an opencast coal mine based on reliability-centered maintenance and failure-mode-effects analysis using real operational data. Reliability-centered maintenance replaced a cluster of critical failure components of the dragline while satisfying two specific conditions: (i) the components should be replaced at the earliest mean time to failure (MTTF) within the group and (ii) the time taken to replace all the parts should be equivalent to the maximum downtime within the group. Estimated threshold weightage factor identified twenty-six critical failure components for the preventive maintenance strategy, and clustering of components divided them into nine groups. In a group, the loss that is expected to occur by replacing some of the components before their failure, and the gain by reducing the overall maintenance downtime, has been explained through a cost-benefit analysis. The total net profit generated is calculated as US$200,178. This clustering activity also led to a reduction of annual downtime by 231 h, whose approximate market price as equivalent coal production costs $295,365.

Organisms living at hydrothermal vents are adapted to catastrophic disturbances in their environment caused by processes such as tectonic activity and mineralization that shift the locus of fluid flux and volcanic eruptions that pave over active systems and reset the hydrothermal cycle. The scientific community appreciates this risk of natural, local loss of species, genetic, and habitat diversity. The risks of more profound loss of diversity and ecosystem function and health as a consequence of additive commercial activities in hydrothermal systems are unknown, and are not the same across all deep-sea hydrothermal systems. Vent communities differ from one ocean basin to another, as do the geological settings and geochemical dynamics of vent systems. Communities on the East Pacific Rise represent one end-member in the catalog of hydrothermal vent communities. In these systems, the life cycle of a hydrothermal field is on approximately the same time scale as the lifespan of the species that live there. From studies of the 1991 and subsequent eruptions at 9N on the East Pacific Rise, we understand the rapidity with which new vents are colonized when nearby brood stocks are available to repopulate the system. Almost instantaneously, microbial biofilms and mats form, followed quickly by invasion of mobile opportunistic organisms (especially crabs, copepods). In a matter of a few months, a predictable succession of sessile organisms recruits, grows, and reproduces. Within two to three years, the system returns to levels of species diversity that begin to match those of the pre-eruption condition. Vents on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) represent a different end-member, with catastrophic disturbance rare relative to the life span of the organisms that make up the bulk of the biomass. We have no experience with an eruptive event or other major transformation of venting activity on the MAR and thus have no knowledge or insight regarding the time it would take for the biological diversity to return to pre-cataclysmic levels.

The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency(MIGA) is part of the World Bank Group, and has as its mission the facilitation of foreign direct investment by providing political risk insurance (guarantees) to foreign investors and lenders. As a development institution, MIGA is required to ensure that the projects that it insures will bring development benefits to the host country. Demonstration of this includes review and analysis of the environmental and social soundness of a prospective investment. Environmental guidelines and policies developed by the World Bank Group are important components both in analyzing the environmental and social soundness of a prospective investment and in risk management. MIGA has recently formalized and adopted environmental assessment and disclosure policies. The approach taken by MIGA to environmental review of investments and implementation of these policies is described in this paper.

Few departments of mining, metallurgical or petroleum engineering in the United States have critical mass. Cost per student credit hour (SCH) in departments across the country are usually the highest among engineering departments, which are the highest on campus. Almost all departments are operating at fixed costs and enrollments could easily double without incurring much additional cost. However, the cost per SCH would remain unacceptably high and the probability of doubling enrollment is nil. Declining enrollment is a more likely future. The pressure to reduce SCH from university administration is unrelenting. And it has the potential for doing serious damage to program quality when standards and requirements are lowered in attempts to maintain enrollments and increase retention.

Although salmonid fishes (including Pacific salmon and trout) have only intermediate sensitivity to copper (Cu) for traditional toxicity endpoints (survival, growth, and reproduction) and thus do not ?drive? the freshwater Cu criteria (e.g., see species-sensitivity ranking in US EPA 2007), Cu concentrations as low as 1 to 2 µg/L have been reported to impair olfaction (the sense of smell) in salmonids in laboratory experiments using dilute fresh water (see references in Meyer and Adams 2010 and DeForest et al. 2011). Olfaction is crucial to predator avoidance, recognition of kin, and reproductive synchronization (Baldwin et al. 2003); and Cu is of general ecotoxicological concern because it can be present in acid/mine rock drainage, industrial and municipal effluents, agricultural runoff, and urban stormwater runoff (Meyer et al. 2007). Therefore, there is public concern that the current regulation of Cu in surface waters is not stringent enough to protect salmonid fishes against olfactory impairment (e.g., OSU 2007; Pearson 2007). Because the toxicity of metals to aquatic organisms is a function of water chemistry [e.g., acute toxicity of Cu generally decreases as pH, water hardness (Ca2+ + Mg2+), alkalinity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations increase; Meyer et al. 2007], hardness-based freshwater criteria for metals are lower at lower water hardness. The recently-developed biotic ligand model (BLM) explicitly takes into account all four of those water chemistry parameters and the concentrations of other major inorganic cations (Na+, K+) and anions (Cl-, SO42-) to predict the acute toxicity of cationic metals (e.g., Ag, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) to aquatic organisms; and the BLM has been adopted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) to calculate acute and chronic national freshwater criteria for Cu (US EPA 2007). Consistent with observations of Cu toxicity to aquatic organisms, BLM-based Cu criteria generally are lower at lower pH, water hardness, alkalinity, and DOC concentrations. Therefore, although threshold concentrations for olfactory impairment by Cu can be low in dilute fresh waters, the corresponding hardness-based and BLM-based Cu criteria for the same waters also tend to be low. This leads to a logical question: Are Cu criteria already protective against impairment of olfaction in salmonid fishes, thus obviating the need to decrease those criteria even lower to protect against adverse effects to this physiological/ecotoxicological endpoint? Herein, we demonstrate that in all studies conducted to date, the US EPA?s BLM-based freshwater Cu criteria would have been protective against olfactory impairment in salmonid fishes, but the US EPA?s hardness-based criteria would not always have been protective. This distinction is important because all 50 States in the USA still use hardness-based Cu criteria in their water quality standards, and only some of the States allow use of the BLM to calculate site-specific Cu criteria. Additionally, in the absence of empirical results for calibration of a saltwater Cu-olfactory model, we demonstrate that a proposed unified freshwater-saltwater Cu-olfactory BLM predicts the US EPA?s current saltwater Cu criteria would be protective against olfactory impairment caused by Cu in sea water.

Mining managers trying to rapidly reduce production costs tend to implement a traditional set of top-down managerial practices: layoffs of employees, renegotiation of supplier contracts, cancellation of employee training, restrictions on travel, reductions in office supplies, and so forth. While these practices do reduce costs, the benefit is often limited in both magnitude and duration, and the workforce is usually left demoralized. Successful cost-cutters take a different approach. They make the continuous reduction of costs a priority for all members of the organization, whether managers or workers. The culture of these firms emphasizes the commitment, voluntarily given, of individuals and work groups to this goal. Cost cutting practices often reject all of the traditional methods mentioned above, but are far more numerous, innovative, and successful. This culture of cost reduction is the result of a set of leadership competencies that establish direction for the organization, align the organization’s various constituencies with this direction, and motivate and inspire the organization. Dramatic cost reduction then becomes a routine task rather than a heroic achievement.

For the first half of the 21st Century the USA will rely on the same mix of fuels as for the past 50 years: Petroleum will cost more and availability will decline as developing nations modernize. Increased use of natural gas for electric power generation will result in severe stress on gas supply. Coal will be the fuel of last resort. More than half the petroleum used is imported, about the same amount as used for transportation. Only coal can provide relief by fueling railroads through electrification while encouraging ‘piggy-back’ trailer haulage, co-generation for manufacturing and expanded passenger service.

Vermiculite is currently mined from shallow (less than 25 m or 80 ft) surface deposits throughout the world. The largest producers are Palabora Mining of Phalabowra, South Africa (ore stock is a phlogopitemica), Xinjiang Yuli Xinlong Vermiculite of Korla, China, and W.R. Grace of Enoree, SC (ore stock is a biotite mica). Smaller operations are in Australia, Brazil, Russia and Zimbabwe. They also produce vermiculite on a continuous basis but do not export any significant amounts of product to North America. Intermittent and poorly documented production on a minor scale is reported from Argentina, Egypt, India and Uganda. Worldwide vermiculite production in 2004 increased1.7 percent to 432.8 kt (477,000 st). North American production declined, while African and Chinese production continued to increase.

Minerals contribute to U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels ? from mining and processing to the manufacturing of Anished products. In 2009, the estimated real GDP of the United States decreased by 2.4 percent compared with, and the estimated nominal GDP was about $14.2 trillion (Table 1). Trends in various sectors of the domestic economy are often reflected in mineral production and consumption rates. In 2009, the continued decline of the housing market was reflected in reductions in the production and consumption of cement, clays, construction sand and gravel, and crushed stone (those mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction). Production of mineral commodities associated with the manufacture of goods for the housing market, such as ceramic tile, heating and air conditioning equipment, paint, plumbing and sanitaryware, roofing, wiring and wallboard also decreased. Focusing on relationships between severity measure versus productivity and other factors, this paper presents a comprehensive study of injuries for U.S. underground coal mines in 1996 by mine size. Based on analyses of data, generally the larger the mine, the more productive it is (in tons per employee-hour), but the more severe is its injury experience (r = 0.65). Within very large, large, and medium mine sizes, however, the more productive the mine, the less severe is its injury experience (r =-0.43, -0.36, and -0.26, respectively). For small and very small mines, a more deeply nested analysis is required to understand relationships. Other interesting relationships and comparisons are presented.

The International Tunnelling and Under-ground Space Association (ITA) is a nonprofit organization that represents all aspects of the tunneling and underground space industry worldwide. The United States has had a prominent role in ITA since its 1974 inception. ITA was formed as a result of a worldwide survey conducted in the early 1970s by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Bill Lucke was in charge of tunnels for the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration and was a member of the organizing committee that created ITA. He became a vice president of ITA. Jack Lemley served as President of ITA from 1983 to 1986. Dick Robbins was very active in ITA and served for many years both as a member of the Executive Council and as First Vice President. Harvey Parker has served as President of ITA for the last three years and will serve as Past President for the next three years. Moreover, there are many individuals and companies from the United States that have contributed significantly to the activities and the success of ITA. There have been several active Working Group Animateurs from the U.S. and there have been significant contributions from many individuals as well as companies from the U.S. Several engineers from the U.S. are currently serving ITA in a leadership role. The Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA of SME) is the official organization representing the U.S.. SME Executive. [ ] Director Dave Kanagy and UCA President Tom Peyton were instrumental in the U.S.?s role at ITA during the last few years. Peyton has been the official delegate to ITA. Henry Russell and Christian Ingerslev are both Animateurs of ITA working groups. This article will introduce ITA and its activities. A subsequent article will describe the ITA in more detail and will discuss the significant role the U.S. has played in the development and success of ITA.

The Zuni Mountains, located in Cibola County, New Mexico is an uplifted area that exposes Proterozoic igneous and metamorphic rocks overlain by Permian and younger sediments. Sedimentary-hosted Cu deposits and fluorite veins in the district have recorded production, but other deposits exist. Proterozoic ultramafic rocks may host Ni and PGE. A recent regional stream sediment survey collected 76 samples as part of an exploration geochemistry course at New Mexico Tech with the goal of assessing the critical minerals potential of the district. Whole rock and trace element chemistry of the sediment samples (<2 mm) show a variety of critical minerals possibly worthy of future targeted exploration including up to 700 ppm As, 2100 ppm Ba, 26 ppm Bi, 25 ppm Co, 640 ppm Cu, 145 ppm Ni, 110 ppm Sb, 170 ppm V, and 500 ppm Zr. Positive correlation between Bi, As, Cu, and Sb suggest that these critical minerals are found together within copper veins related to shear zones in the district. Samples collected from streams that drained outcrop of mafic and ultramafic rocks were found to generally contain more Ni, Co, and V. Samples elevated in Ni will be reanalyzed for PGE.

The critical surface tension of wetting (?c) of Cu2S, FeS2, PbS, and MoS2 were determined by plotting flotation recovery versus YLV which was arranged by methanol, and Extra-polating to % R = 0. ?c values ranged from 26 dyne cm-1 for MoS2 to 49 dyne cm-1 for PbS and elemental sulfur gave a value of 31.5 dyne cm-1. Minerals exhibiting natural flotability of different extents, could be separated from their mixtures in the absence of conventional flotation reagents, but controlled ?LV. Correlations between non-stoichiometry and degree of natural hydrophobicity for MOS2 are also reported in this paper.

Traditionally, chromite ores are regarded exclusively as a monomineral raw material for extraction of chromium. The results of the investigations indicate a wide range of PGM in the Ray-Iz chromites, amounting to 1-3 ppm PGM. The study of products of primary gravity concentration from heavily and lightly disseminated ores (Tsentralnoe deposit, Ray-Iz block), showed that the platinum-group minerals are concentrated in the tails and slimes of the processed products, containing 10-30 ppm total PGM. Preliminary data make it possible to conclude that an in-depth study of the platinum mineralogy of the Ray-Iz block chromite ores is necessary to develop a process that will produce both chromium and the PGM.

Maximum fan efficiency can only be obtained when the fan has the correct combination of size, speed, and blade setting to provide the required flow of air against the mine resistance. As the mine grows older, resistance decreases unless old workings flow is restricted, and new combinations of speed and blade setting or different fan sizes may provide greater economy.

As part of the 3RPORT and NEBT Projects, 5-mile Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnels were excavated with a 19 ft diameter Slurry and 26 ft diameter EPB Tunnel Boring Machines. Due to the difficult geological and hydrogeological conditions, both tunnels were excavated maintaining a ground support pressure between 2 and 5.5 bar imposing significant challenges to the projects. The first part of the paper describes the general characteristics of both projects while the second part focuses on the challenges and technical details of the pressurized breakthroughs that took place in deep shafts excavated in urban environment as part of the projects.

The Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) features two 20 TeV counter rotating proton beams which will be housed in 87 km (54 miles) of tunnel. Four additional lower energy particle accelerators will be housed in 26 km (16 miles) of tunnel and underground structures. Physics experiments will be conducted in two underground detector halls approximately 67 m (220 feet) deep with footprints measuring about 30 m (100 feet) by 100 m (330 feet). Definition and design of underground facilities is advanced with construction of approximately one-third of the SSC program underway. This paper presents an overview and status of the SSC project.
