Tertiary calc-alkalic to alkalic rocks of the Little Rocky Mountains in north-central Montana host low-grade heap-leachable gold-silver deposits being mined by Pegasus Gold Corporation. Total production from 1884 through 1985 is estimated at 22,625 kilograms (727,414 ounces) of gold. This includes 10,774 kilograms (346,400 ounces) recovered by Pegasus between 1980 to 1986 from 20,318,000 tonnes (22,396,000 tons) of ore grading 0.960 grams of gold per tonne (0.028 ounces per ton). Silver production during this latter period was 24,556 kilograms (789,500 ounces), but reliable silver statistics prior to 1980 are not available. Ore reserves as of January 1, 1986, were estimated to be 35,380,800 tonnes (39,000,000 tons) grading 0.720 grams per tonne (0.021 ounces per ton). Present ore production is 5,533,920 tonnes (6,100,000 tons) per year at a 0.45 to 1 waste to ore strip ratio. Current annual metal production is about 2,644 and 5,288 kilograms of gold and silver respectively (85,000 and 170,000 ounces of gold and silver respectively). The Little Rockies were formed by a calc-alkalic to alkalic magma penetrating through the Precambrian basement into the overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. This intrusive center is Dart of the Central Montana Alkalic Province, a region comprised of twelve separate intrusive centers aligned in a northeast trending belt measuring 200 by 400 kilometers (124 x 248 miles). The ore deposits are structurally controlled epithermal systems which vary from deeper narrow veins to shallow, wide, low-grade stockworks, breccias and intensely fractured "sheeted" zones. The shallow types are now being exploited. Primary mineralization consists principally of gold and silver associated with pyrite, native gold and silver, sylvanite, calaverite, and hessite. Alteration is broadly classified as weak argillic. Pyritization, kaolinization, silicification and feldspathization are the dominant forms of alteration. Fluorite is a common hydrothermal gangue mineral.

"Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project is located in South West Sri Lanka. This project, among many components, involves a 14 km headrace tunnel in very hard and abrasive igneous rocks. The tunnel is under construction by a 4.4 m diameter double shield TBM. The headrace tunnel has already reached 5km milestone and has passed through some reaches of tunnel in very strong intact rocks with no joints. Low penetration at high thrust load has caused frequent stoppages for cutter change leading to low utilization and advance rates due to low cutter life. The original machine was dressed with 27, each 432 mm (17 inch) diameter, 19 mm (3/4 inch) tipped disc cutters. However, various cutter diameters of 432-457 mm (17-18 inch) and cutter tip widths 13 to 19 mm (0.5-0.75 in), have been tried to see if cutter life and penetration rates could be increased. This paper will review the history of the project, the geology of the site, along with TBM performance and cutter life. It will focus on frequency of different cutter failures encountered in various ground conditions. Also, results of using variation of cutter diameter and tip width to cope with the hard rock conditions and their results in increasing machine productivity will be discussed. This allows for better understanding of parameters controlling disc wear/life and leads to better cutter management for more efficient operation of hard rock TBMs in similar conditions. INTRODUCTION The Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project (UOMDP) lies in the south-eastern part of the central highland region of Sri Lanka. The Multi-Purpose Project Of Uma Oya is planned to convey water from Uma Oya to Kirindi Oya Basin for hydroelectric energy generation includes Puhulpola RCC Dam on the Uma Oya river, Dyraaba RCC Dam on the Mahatotilla Oya river, a conveyance tunnel from Uma Oya to Mahatotilla Oya (L=3750m), a long feeder tunnel from Mahatotilla Oya to Kirindi Oya river. The feeder (or power) tunnel Lot consists of a 15554 m long headrace tunnel (HRT), the surge shaft and tank on the upstream of the vertical shaft, a 650 m vertical shaft with steel lining, and an underground powerhouse and a 3650m tailrace tunnel (TRT)."

Iron oxides are unique in that they are the only significant colored mineral found in a natural state suitable for use as a pigment after being pulverized to pigmentary size. The world production of iron oxide pigments is estimated by the authors to be between 350 and 400 kt. The fact that highly colored natural deposits of iron ore are found throughout the world accounts for its use in prehistoric man's artistic cave paintings. These early artists did not realize that they had established man's first paint test which now has some 20,000 years of exposure. In addition to abundance, iron oxides (about 7% of the earth's crust) have the advantage of low cost, permanency, and are non- toxic. Through the centuries, succeeding civilizations have utilized iron oxides as a major source for decoration and protection when these properties were desired. In the last century the chemical industry has improved on nature by developing a complete range of synthetic iron oxide pigments which surpass the pigments produced from natural iron ores in uniformity, color quality, and chemical purity. In the United States, the combined production of natural and synthetic iron oxides produced sales of over $97 million in 1980 (Spimad, Jr., 1980), increasing to $138 million by 1990 (Templeton, 1990) NOMENCLATURE With the increasing importance of the synthetic iron oxides it is necessary to make a distinction between the natural or mineral pigments and the synthetic pigments. Natural pigments are those products that are derived from selected ores and should not be confused with iron ores mined for steel production. Iron ores that are mined for steel must be capable of being mined and reduced to iron on a competitive commercial basis. These ores are selected on the basis of iron content and processing economics. It is therefore unusual when iron ores for steel production are suitable for use as mineral pigments. Natural pigment ore sources are selected for their special physical-chemical properties and are able to command a premium price over iron ores used for steel manufacturing. Synthetic pigments, and in this instance iron oxides, are those pigments produced from basic chemicals. Through chemical synthesis pigmentary particles are produced as opposed to the use of comminution, the major procedure common to all natural iron oxide pigments.

Bacterial leaching of copper and uranium is practiced in environments containing available sulfur and iron and having a strong acidic reaction. However, many mineral deposits do not have these conditions; the chalcocite and native copper ores in Michigan's Upper Peninsula are examples. Bacterial and fungal populations were observed in samples taken from the White Pine Copper Company tailing pond and mine, and isolates were prepared of the dominant species. The isolates were then screened for solubilization of copper from tailing, ore, and concentrate during incuba¬tion in a carbon and nitrogen supplying medium. Certain Penicillium fungi solubilized significant amounts of copper under neutral to slightly acidic conditions. Leaching apparently was accomplished by release into the medium of metabolites which chelated with the copper.- The process was found to be highly dependent upon the medium and the concentration of copper in the source material. The paper describes sampling and screening techniques, presents the results of experimentation to standardize procedures and maximize the yield of copper, and discusses the nature of the leaching process. This preliminary research reveals a biological process which may find use in mineral extractions but whether it can be applied economically remains to be determined.

INTRODUCTION During a recent panel discussion on the topic of millwater antiscalants, the question was posed: "What would you like to see in the future?" Answer: 'We need an antiscalant that: can be fed without a pump (no maintenance), functions on residual basis (no fault), can be tested for colorimetrically in sub-part-per- mi 11 ion concentrations (no guessing) and will recycle back to the mill from tailings (no cost).” Impossible? Based upon today's level of technology, such a product does not exist. However, a few of the qualifications listed above are certainly food for future thought. Meanwhile, progress is being made in upgrading three essential elements in this critical area of ore processing. They are: 1. Antiscalant reagent research and development. 2. On-line monitoring programs. 3. Reagent storage and feed systems. The objective of this paper is to out- line the current direction being taken in each of these areas and to present case histories as examples of how theory has been applied in field situations to better improve operations. LABORATORY SCREENING TESTS Recent technical papers have explained the various generic chemical raw materials which are available in the marketplace. While the merits of each chemical component are open to debate, the processes used by most major reagent suppliers to evaluate products in the laboratory are fairly standard. Common techniques incorporate both static and dynamic conditions in the search for the most cost effective product. Static Test Perhaps the most common test procedure used is based upon NACE Standard Test Method 03-74, which is "a laboratory screening test to determine the ability of scale inhibitors to prevent precipitation of calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate from solution." The objective of this test is to measure the change in calcium ion concentration in a container of saturated stock solution prepared from calcium chloride and sodium carbonate which is heated in a water bath. After 12 hours at constant temperature (160°), the mother liquor is pipetted into a beaker and a titrated for gm/l of unprecipitated calcium ion. A simultaneous test is performed on stock solution with antiscalant added. The results are then charted to determine the most effective antiscalant (with respect to preventing precipitation of calcite). It should be noted that this procedure examines only the ability of a chemical additive to retain calcite in a saturated solution where thermal stress is applied. This is commonly referred to as sequestration or stabilization. It has been documented that products which act in this manner (i.e., inorganic and organic phosphates) are good scale inhibitors. However, low molecular weight anionic polymers function in a much different manner by distorting calcite crystal size, shape and charge density, thus preventing scale formation. Because of this different mode of operation, static tests may not prove conclusive where polymers and sequestrants are being compared. The simplicity of this test makes it easily adaptable for field use, although modifications are often made.

A highly undesirable side effect of the mining of coal is the release of acid forming chemicals into the ground water system. The disturbance of the ground during mining allows water to flow through the coal bearing strata and mine refuge where it absorbs iron and sulfide ions and thus becomes highly acidic. The highly acid mine water can then contaminate water supplies and can destroy many of the recreational uses of Pennsylvania's waterways. A great deal of effort has been expended to develop methods of controlling groundwater pollution from mine drainage. At the Pennsylvania State University there has been an ongoing effort to under- stand the chemistry of acid mine water formation and the hydrologic environment in which the acidic water migrates from the mine source into the ground water system. As a support to the hydrologic studies, geophysical studies have been used to help determine the geologic structure of the areas under study which are contaminated by acid water. In addition, the geophysical work has been used to define the type of information geophysical methods can give to determine which geophysical methods are most useful and to develop geophysical field procedures.

The immediate roof at the test site consisted of laminated clay shale that is likely to be susceptible to weathering. With seasonal dry-wet cycles in the mine ventilation air, the roof in the intake air would deteriorate and lose integrity over time. In many instances, the weathering-prone roof would gradually scale off piece by piece between bolts and over the entry corners. In some long-term entries, roof weathering could develop up to 2-3 ft deep with columns of bolted roof hanging under the upper intact roof. If wire mesh is used, the roof bags down and reduces the entry height, and the weight of the bagged roof tends to pull the bolts out and poses a safety hazard. An effective measure is always sought to support this type of weak roof that is sensitive to moisture degradation. One solution is to seal the roof shortly after entry development to prevent moisture penetration so that roof integrity can be maintained for the long term. In this application, a polymer-based sealing material was tested in the Rockspring mine for weathering protection and reinforcement. The material is a one-component polymer powder for spray application onto the roof and rib. The sealant material is mixed with water in the spraying nozzle to apply to the roof and rib as a paste. The product sets within 5-10 minutes and forms a membrane as thin as about 1/8-in. The membrane will quickly develop tensile and bonding strength within minutes and completely cure within a few days. Through sealing, bonding and lateral reinforcement, the integrity of the weak roof can be maintained. The material has been tried in a long-term evaluation over several months in a set of main entries in the Rockspring mine owned and operated by Rockspring Development, Inc., affiliate of Foundation Coal. Preliminary evaluation has shown that the material is an effective and economical solution to ensuring the long-term stability of weathering-prone roof.

4.1 INTRODUCTION There have been numerous methods developed for predicting the final subsidence and final displacement profiles (Voight and Pariseau, 1970; Brauner, 1973a; Kratzsch, 1983). But for discus- sion purposes, they can be classified into six categories: theoretical, profile function, influence function, graphical, physical, and numerical modeling. The theoretical method employs mainly continuum mechanics theories and attempts to explain the mechanisms that lead to sur- face subsidence. Many models using nearly all kinds of material behavior have been developed. These include elastic (Salmon, 1963; Berry, 1964), plastic (Pariseau, 1968), viscoelastic (Iman, 1965), and elastoplastic (Dahl, 1969). The Profile Function Method is essentially a method of curve-fitting against the measured subsidence profiles in a particular mine or region. There are more than 20 profile functions developed empirically for nearly all major coalfields in the world. These include, to name just a few representative ones: Hungary (Martos, 1958), Japan (Hiramatsu and Oka, 1968), Russia (Avershin, 1947), United Kingdom (Wardell, 1965), and USA (Peng and Chen, 1981; Karmis et al., 1984). The NCB's graphical method in the subsidence Engineers' Handbook (1975) also belongs to the profile function method. The influence function method was first proposed by Bals (1931/1932). It was further developed in various periods and stages by Knothe (1957), Liu and Liao (1965), Brauner (1973a) and Marr (1975). This method is now widely used in various parts of the world. The physical models include sand (Litwiniszyn, 1959; Pariseau and Dahl, 1968) and gelatin (King and Whetton, 1958; Khair et al., 1986). They are used mainly to study the parameters that control subsidence behavior. The most popular numerical method is the finite element technique. It can simulate nearly every conceivable material behavior, inhomogeneity, bedding planes, anisotropy, and various boundary conditions. This versatility is absolutely necessary considering the ever-changing geologic and mining conditions encountered. In the following sections, only those methods that have been applied to US coalfields will be discussed. Furthermore, the methods for prediction of several key parameters such as maximum subsidence, maximum possible subsidence, and maximum displacement are discussed first, because they are the key parameters to be used in the profile function, influence function, and graphical methods.

To reduce the number of injuries resulting from fires on mobile, diesel-powered mine equipment, it is crucial to promptly suppress a fire once it is detected. The focus of this research was to determine the effectiveness of fire suppression agents. Large-scale tests were conducted using five different fire suppression systems based on: dry chemical, wet chemical, dual agent (dry and wet chemical), carbon dioxide, and water mist. Suppression nozzles were placed around the diesel engine where diesel fuel, engine motor oil, and hydraulic circulating oil spray fires were ignited. The results of this study can help mining companies and manufacturers by providing scientifically based data on the capabilities of the different fire suppression systems.

The Romanian mining and especially the salt mining industry is going through a restructuring phase; among others it has to respect the European Environment Act. One of the most important deficits of the salt mining industry is the implementation of monitoring systems for geomechanics phenomena, in order to develop an important information database and form a real base for salt mines stability, prediction and prevention measures. Monitoring system solutions, involving discontinuous and continuous measurements of displacement / deformation fields, around underground excavations, are presented and discussed. In addition, a case study for the stability prediction of an experimental salt off-set, located in the Praid salt mine, using DKRControl method, is presented. The two monitoring systems use different tools, namely measuring tapes (to determine distance between markers in T-D station) and ultrasonic transducers (SM-TDA equipment).

Conventional zinc concentrates generally contain 5 to 10% Fe, while bulk concentrates can contain up to 20% Fe. As a result, the disposal of iron bearing residues is an integral part of zinc refining operations. The quality of iron residues must comply with ever changing and increasingly stringent environmental legislation. Zinc has been recovered from sulphide concentrates by a hydrometallurgical route for almost one hundred years. The disposal of iron was a major difficulty for the industry for many decades and was directly responsible for low overall zinc recoveries. The introduction of the jarosite process in the mid 1960's allowed for the treatment of neutral leach residues and the precipitation of iron in an easily filterable form. Subsequently, three additional iron precipitation processes have found commercial application in the zinc industry: the goethite process; the paragoethite process; and the hematite process. The Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leach Process has been developed for integration with existing roast leach electrowin zinc plants, or as a stand alone facility for the treatment of a wide variety of zinc bearing feed materials. It is essential that these processes allow for the disposal of iron residues in an environmentally acceptable form. This paper describes the integration of the Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leach Process with commercially proven iron precipitation processes. The results of laboratory testwork and data from operating plants are presented.

The market prices received by producers of internationally traded commodity metals have been, and continue to be remarkably volatile and unpredictable compared with most other traded goods and services. This volatility results in an erratic financial performance on the part of producing companies, disruptive and often inflationary cost changes for consumers, unreliable tax revenues and export earnings for host governments and severe social and economic pressures on local, sometimes remote, communities which are dependent on the activity in question. Generally speaking, price volatility appears to be associated with the inability of the metal producing side of the industry to regulate the volume of supply in a manner that is consistent with metal demand, which in turn reflects broad macroeconomic and industrial developments around the world. This statement does not purport to apply to all metals or to all instances of volatility of course. Price movements may occur as a result of pure speculation or even illegal manipulation of the commodity markets. Embargoes, boycotts and other politically induced supply changes may contribute. Threatened or actual strikes also cause artificial swings in sales volumes and prices. How- ever, most of these developments are of a short-term nature. Yet metals price cycles may last for several years, as demonstrated by the extended copper price trough from 1981 to 1986. This paper deals with price volatility which reflects long-term economic cycles and the adaptive processes that exist within the industry in response to such cycles. Special emphasis is placed on the role of forecasts and forecasters in these processes. It should be said at the outset that this reflects the personal experience of one forecaster working in private sector commercial consulting practices that are independent of producers, consumers and host governments. However, the experience does cover the entire period since 1973 and has involved working with a substantial majority of the major companies that supply high volume commodity metals. By way of background it should be stated that the post-1973 world economy has provided a challenging environment for forecasters. One cannot be precise about the forecasting record of either industry insiders or outside consultants, financial analysts and academic forecasters because comprehensive records have not been kept, or if they have the results are too embarrassing to be published. Institutions such as the World Bank have published forecasts of the prices of major commodities on a regular basis and these have, presumably, had some influence on financing decisions in the industry. This record along with our own experience and numerous discussions with metal producers, major consumers and host governments permits certain generalizations to be made. The most important of these is that during the early 1980s. from about 1980 through 1985/6, the forecasters system- atically and substantially over- estimated metal prices. While some fore- casters did correctly anticipate a recession in the early 1980s and some consequential decline in prices, the magnitude and duration of the decline was far greater than anyone foresaw. This systematic forecasting "failure" appears to have occurred independently of the forecasting methodology employed. Moreover, its extent cannot be explained by obvious factors such as incorrect macroeconomic assumptions. A preliminary study of the performance of a 4-inch Krebs cyclone at near rope conditions and different feed slurry temperatures was completed. Results suggest that temperature influences the x50c size which, in turn, did not depend upon spigot diameter. The bypass correction to a reduced efficiency equation incorporating the concept of a critical size xo was a function of fractional water recovery to underflow and may depend on feed size and feed percent solids. Further experimentation is required to develop an accurate model at near rope conditions.

The Cigar Lake project, located in northern Saskatchewan (Figure 1), is one of the world?s largest high grade uranium deposits, with reserves of 150 million kilograms of uranium in a deposit averaging 430 metres below the surface. The Cigar Lake project is being developed by Cigar Lake Mining Corporation (CLMC) which is owned by Cameco Corporation (48.75%), Cogema Canada (36.375%). Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Ltd. (12.875%) and Korea Electric Power (2%). Mining the Cigar Lake orebody is presenting a very real challenge due to the high grade and the ground conditions in and around the orebody. Presently, an underground test of various mining methods is underway.

Data on sulfonate adsorption by silicate minerals are very scarce in the literatures. Perhaps the only comprehensive paper written on the topic was done by Fuerstenau and Bhappu (1); this work dealt exclusively with quartz but included many important suggestions as to the form and nature of the hydroxy-sulfonate species of some cations formed during the conditioning step and their effect on the flotation response of quartz. Another paper by the same authors (2) contains additional data on the role of hydrolysis in sulfonate flotation of beryl. As postulated by Fuerstenau and Bhappu, a solid form of cationic sulfonate functions as the collecting species to produce flotation of quartz and beryl. According to the authors, the solid compound is a hydroxy-sulfonate of a given cation, where the hydrogen of the hydroxyl part provides a means for bonding of the species to the mineral surface; thus, the presence of hydroxyl in the neutral precipitated compound is of primary importance to produce flotation. Although the preceding examples illustrate the effect of a sulfonate collector in silicate systems other than plagioclases, they are important as examples of processes of hydroxy-sulfonate complex formation. Since the plagioclase minerals con¬tain Ca(II) and Al(III) cations, which are very reactive in sulfonate media (1), the formation of hydroxy-sulfonate compounds with these cations released from the solid phase may well prove to be the cause for their flotation.

Mining of a bedded barite deposit exposed highly pyritic siliceous sediments which have weathered and degraded subsurface and surface waters. The ph, sulfate, and total dissolved solids are the most seriously affected parameters. Several solutions were tried and eventually horizontal holes were drilled into the mine wall to draw down the water table and decrease the movement of groundwater through oxidizing zones opened up by the mining operation. Areas of surface disturbance were capped with layers of soil, bentonite, and gravel to decrease the infiltration of water into the disturbed areas. These actions have begun to decrease sulfate and total dissolved solids concentrations and increase ph values.

Introduction Laboratory studies were carried out at West Virginia University to investigate the rock-fragmentation mechanism of continuous miners using an automated rotary cutting simulator. The primary factors influencing the fragmentation process were found to be bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut and cutting-drum rotational speed. This paper presents a discussion of the effects of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation. The removal of rock ridges/walls between adjacent grooves is analyzed with three hits mounted simultaneously on the cutting head, while the bit tip angle was varied from 600 to 900. Bit spacing was varied from 25.4 to 50.8 mm (1 to 2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Respirable dusts generated during the course of the experiments were analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism of continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation. A review of the literature revealed that a considerable amount of research has been carried out on rockcutting processes. Many authors agree that the mechanical cutting efficiencies of mining machines (e.g., continuous miners, shearers and road headers) are affected by a host of parameters. Some of these parameters are machine controlled, some are operator controlled, while others are uncontrollable. Efforts were focused on understanding the influence of parameters such as bit spacing, cutting depth, attack angle, bit type, drum speed, bit geometry (i.e., tip size, shape and tip angle) and rock type on the cutting process efficiency in terms of specific energy consumption and respirable dust generation (Strehig?? et al., 1975, Hanson et al., 1979, Khair et al., 1989). Roepke et al. (1976) in an attempt to study the dust and energy generated during coal cutting using point attack bits found that the dust and the specific energy consumed both decrease as the depth of cut increases. The four fundamental stages of dust generation luring rock fragmentation are identified by Zipf and Bieniawski (1989). Coal breakage by various types of wedges was assessed by Evans and Pomeroy (1966) in an extensive experimental study on British coals. Yet the industry today requires further attention and guidance to optimize the energy consumption and dust generation during the rockbreakage process. This paper attempts to give a better understanding of the influence of some of the parameters listed above and focuses on further improvement in the rock-cutting process. The specific energy consumed for different types of bits used and the respirable dust generated are analyzed in the context of the variation of a few other parameters. Laboratory investigation The experiments were performed in the Rock Mechanics Laboratories located at West Virginia University. A rock-cutting simulator designed and fabricated by Khair (1984) was utilized for this purpose. The details of this machine are available in the literature (see Khair 1984). For this study, a series of preliminary experiments was carried out to determine the optimum cutting frame advance speed. This was intended to facilitate a maximum cut depth of 31.75 mm (1.25 in.) at an advance rate of 0.525 mm/s (0.0207 ips) for all types of bits being used and various bit spacings being considered. To look into the cutting-process efficiency of a continuous miner in the laboratory, several parameters of influence are being considered. Besides the bit-geometry parameters, machine- and operator-controlled parameters, such as spacing of bits on the cutting head, the cutting head rotational speed and the total cutting depth during an experiment, are varied. At the time this paper was written, only part of the completed experiments were ana¬lyzed, and a number of experiments were still being carried out following an orthogonal fractional factorial experimental plan to assess the effect of all of the above¬mentioned parameters on the cutting efficiency in terms of energy consumption and dust generation. INTRODUCTION The Chimney Creek Gold Mine (Gold Fields Operating Co. - Chimney Creek) is located 47 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada, at the northern end of the Osgood Mountains. The operation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Fields Mining Corporation, the North American branch of Consolidated Gold Fields PLC, London, England. The plant started up in November, 1987, less than three years after discovery of the orebody and three months ahead of schedule. Ore is mined in an open pit and is processed by combined dump leaching and milling techniques for gold and silver recovery. The mine is set to produce approximately 150.000 ounces of gold and 50,000 ounces of silver per year over a 12 year life at current reserve estimations. The mine was designed and constructed at a cost of $79.3 million with engineering and construction services provided by Davy McKee Corporation, San Ramon, California. Key Gold Fields operating staff were involved in the design of the facility from the start of the project: The Mine Manager, Plant Superintendent, Plant General Foreman, Maintenance General Foreman and Chief Metallurgist were all involved full time on the project within 5 months of the first ore discovery. Emphasis was directed at optimizing operating efficiency and in particular minimizing labor costs in the plant. It was recognized that a high level of instrumentation and control would be required to achieve this. The risk associated with the instrumentation and control systems implemented was to be minimized by using equipment and systems that had been proven in industry while utilizing the most cost effective, state-of-the-art technology available. The reliability of the overall control system was considered to be critical in view of the cost of downtime associated with the gold extraction plant. BRIEF PROCESS DESCRIPTION The dump leaching process treats approximately 1.2 million tons per year of low grade ore at an average grade of 0.035 oz/ton. Run of mine material is dumped on a lined leach pad and weak cyanide solution is applied by drip irrigation. Pregnant solution run off is pumped to carbon columns in the milling plant for gold recovery and the barren solution returned to the dump leach circuit. Average gold recovery is 60%. This process has little instrumentation and control associated with it. The milling operation treats 700,000 tons annually of higher grade ore (0.200 oz/ton initially, dropping to an average of 0.135 oz/ton after first two years). Recovery is directly related to head grade (fixed tail assay effect) and currently averages 96%. A single pass through a jaw crusher reduces run of mine ore to minus 12 inches. The ore is stockpiled and reclaimed by loader for grinding in a two-stage milling circuit consisting of a SAG mill and ball mill, the latter in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. Cyanide and lime are added into the SAG mill to start dissolution of gold as early as possible in the circuit. The ground product leaves the milling circuit at approximately 78% minus 200 mesh and is fed to an unique "double thickener" leaching-recovery circuit. This circuit has been discussed in detail in a paper by J. G. Mansanti et a1 (1). Two thickeners are arranged in counter- current configuration with three leach tanks. Overflow solution from the first thickener is treated by carbon-in-columns (CIC) for gold recovery with 85% of the soluble gold recovered onto this carbon. Underflow slurry from this thickener is pumped to the leach tanks, with a total retention time of 12 hours, and then gravitates to the No. 2 thickener. Overflow solution from the second thickener is used as a wash in the first thickener. Underflow slurry from the second thickener is treated in a carbon-in- pulp (CIP) scavenging circuit to recover the remaining 15% dissolved gold. Gold-loaded carbon from both the dump leach and milling circuits is stripped in batches using the Zadra hot caustic- cyanide elution process. Gold (and silver) is recovered from the hot strip solution by precipitation with zinc dust and the product recovered on Funda pressure filters. The precipitate is retorted to remove any mercury and then smelted into buttons. The buttons (approximately 80% gold, 15% silver) are shipped to an independent refiner in Salt Lake City, Utah, for further treatment.

Anorthosite is an abundant, domestic source of alumina with reserves in individual deposits ranging from a few billion to hundreds of billions of tons. While anorthosite contains less alumina than does kaolinite, its CaO and Na20 contents are significantly higher (Figure 1). Alumina can be produced from anorthosite by alkaline, soda-lime sinter or acid processes. CaO and Na20 are advantageous because they are reactants consumed in alkaline processes. Acid processes require high calcium plagioclase feldspars (bytownite-anorthite) to obtain high alumina extraction because the lower calcium plagioclase feldspars (andesine-labradorite) are not as readily dissolved during digestion. The layered Raggedy Mountain Gabbro group in the Wichita complex in southwest Oklahoma is a high calcium anorthosite that could be processed by acid, sinter, or alkaline methods. Chemical grade limestone in the Arbuckle Group is located within 45 km of the anorthosite (Figure 2).
