The physical properties of clay-water systems depend on the complicated system of forces between the clay particles themselves, and between the clay particles and the ions in the liquid phase. The kind and distribution of ions in, on, and between the clay particles and the size and the shape of the particles are the basic factors determining the macroscopic behavior of clay-water systems. Understanding the system requires a knowledge of the nature of the clay particles, their size, structure, composition, and surface properties, and of the manner in which they interact with ions [and molecules] in the surrounding liquid [or other medium]. The validity of Professor Brindley's words (Brindley, 1958), written three decades ago in the context of making pottery, whitewares, and electrical porcelains, transcends time, and the basic message is perhaps all the more important in the considerably expanded use of ceramics for structural, thermal, tribological, electronic, and other applications. Silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and sialons have been studied in the last two decades for high- temperature structural and tribological applications, particularly for using in internal combustion engines. Titanates, zirconates and niobates of barium, strontium and lead, have high dielectric constants, and are extensively used in the formulations for making capacitors. Hexagonal ferrites (molecular formula MO.6Fe2O3) are in use for making permanent magnets for fabricating miniature motors, and for assembling loud speakers, particle accelerators etc. Cubic ferrites such as magnesium-zinc ferrite and nickel-zinc ferrite are used as transformer cores, and for other high-frequency applications. In this context, Richerson's recent book (Richerson, 1984) on the general scope of traditional and technical ceramics is a good starting point for an overview of contemporary ceramics technology. Glasses are a whole class of amorphous materials used widely as sintering aids, and for making glass-bonded ceramics and glass-ceramic composites. Composites are yet another burgeoning field where two or more particulate components are used for improving the performance of ceramics. For all these applications, the inorganic starting materials are almost always submicron and near-micron powders. Understanding the powders' physicochemical properties, and their surface chemical interactions with the surrounding liquid/gaseous medium is-necessary for making reliable ceramic parts at competitive prices. Even though ceramics science and engineering has attained its separate identity in universities and the industry, ceramists themselves would concede that ceramics science is a cross-disciplinary field, having incorporated and assimilated within itself many principles from several apparently disjointed disciplines. Principles of material science, graduate-level physics and chemistry, polymer science, surface and colloid chemistry, transport phenomena, particle technology, unit operations commonly used in chemical engineering and mineral processing, and statistics and applied mathematics are integral part of any ceramics curriculum in universities. Added to this is the fact that all bench-scale successes in making ceramic parts are to be scaled-up for larger throughput operations. Understanding and applying process engineering principles of comminution, classification, drying, calcination, etc. then becomes essential. CERAMIC FORMING: Despite the diversity of the materials and processes, conceptually, the steps involved in making ceramic parts have remained the same over several decades: The different components for making the pan (usually one or more powders plus other forming and sintering additives) are proportioned and mixed thoroughly, and the well-mixed formulations are consolidated into desirable shapes known as "green bodies." Usually binders such as wax, clay, organic polymers and surfactants, whether dispersed or dissolved in a suitable liquid are used during mixing the batch for giving strength for the green bodies. In the dried green state, the inorganic powders typically occupy only 55 to 60% of the bulk volume of the body, depending on the particle size distributions of the powders and the forming history, with mostly inter- particle voids accounting for the rest of the void volume. SINTERING: The formed bodies are then fired in high- temperatures kilns/furnaces during which the parts are exposed to a predetermined temperature profile, and "soaked" for a certain duration at the final high temperatures, typically between 1200 K and 1900 K, and then cooled to room temperature. The gaseous atmosphere in the furnace is controlled (oxidizing, reducing, or inert) when necessary. During the initial stages of firing, volatile liquids evaporate, and during the intermediate temperatures between 400 and 600 K, the the organic polymeric additives pyrolize and oxidize into water vapor, CO, C02, and other gases. "Qatar’s capital Doha is undergoing major infrastructure improvements including a multiphase stormwater management program. Although located in an arid climate, Doha experiences flooding during rainfall events. Dewatering operations and rising groundwater levels add to the management needs. To address those needs, construction of the Musaimeer collection tunnel along Doha’s southern rim is being followed by a marine outfall tunnel connecting a pump station to a dispersion field 10 km offshore. Qatar’s geology is characterized by sabkha deposits, a series of predominantly weak and karstic rock strata that creates challenging conditions for mechanized tunneling, as highlighted by the uncontrolled flooding of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) used on the Doha Metro tunnels. Risk associated with these challenges is magnified for the outfall tunnel by drive length, sub-sea elevation, and a single access point. This paper describes the outfall exploration strategy and design decisions made in light of experience gained during the collection tunnel construction. CONTEXT – STORMWATER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM Qatar has an arid climate with an average annual precipitation of less than 100 mm. Precipitation is mostly confined to the winter months when rare, but occasionally heavy rainfall events easily lead to flooding in Doha’s metropolitan area. Its coastal location and flat topography a few meters above the sea level mean that the depth to the groundwater table is generally shallow. The karstic aquifers in the regional dolomite and limestone series contain groundwater of high salinity, which is not suitable as a potable water source. For supplying Doha’s population of more than 900,000 (2014) with potable water, the Ras Abu Fontas seawater desalination plant is operated about 10 km south of the city. This potable water production capacity is crucial for Doha’s development and – in conjunction with overirrigation and leaking sewage tanks – is also the root cause for rising groundwater tables that have been observed over the past years."

There are a number of factors, including mine geometry, local geology, geotechnical properties of overburden materials, surface topography, sequence of overburden strata, and extraction rate, affecting characteristics of surface subsidence imposed by large underground excavation. Among the factors, the first three have the major impact on magnitude and area of influence of final subsidence. Hence, a model has been developed, considering mine geometry and geologic and geotechnical properties of the associated area, to predict maximum possible subsidence and subsidence profile at any cross-section within the subsidence influence zone. Based on extensive field measurements and mechanics of strata behavior, under the action of overburden pressure in the vicinity of the large underground excavation, the vertical plane of influence zone has been divided into five areas: 1) excavated, 2) caved, 3) fractured, 4) highly deformed but continuous, and 5) subsided zones. In the final state of subsidence each area maintains a certain volume expansion/contraction, i.e. a factor which depends on geologic, geotechnical properties of overburden strata and state of stress within the subsidence trough. The cumulative volume expansion and contraction partially compensates for the extracted volume and the difference between the two is reflected as the subsided area in the form of the area within a curve defined by a probability function. The input parameters for the model are mine geometry (i.e. length and width of the panel), depth of cover, and geologic and geotechnical properties of overburden strata (i.e. percentage of hardrock, sandstone and limestone, and soft rock, shale within the overburden strata and Rock Quality Designation). The model calculates angle of draw for the site, expansion factor for each zone utilizing empirical relationships, maximum possible subsidence and plots the subsidence profile curve. The model is developed for a longwall excavation with unique characteristics of prediction of angle of draw and maximum possible subsidence for a given geologic and mining condition at any cross-section within the influence zone of subsidence.

Introduction The need for water is fundamental to every minerals processing operation. Though this may sound rather elementary, it is one area that cannot be over- looked. Frank C. Quinn in his paper entitled "Water Is Water Is Water" (1967) said, "but it isn't as simple as that. Very often research is slowed down and production is hampered because of a lack of appreciation for the behavior of water." The quantity of water needed for any operation is determined from bench and pilot plant testing. The quality required by the process for both fresh and reuse water is also established during these two testing phases. Quinn's statements are true whether the process involves the paper industry, the minerals industry, or any other industry. It is not the author's intent to cover water quality, quantity, or re- cycle in specific terms, but to provide the reader with a general outline of the topic with reference to several valuable sources of information. The first part of the chapter will cover several of the areas that have been de- tailed by others and also provide a list of reference sources. The references at the end of the chapter are not all inclusive but will provide a good starting point. In the second part of the chapter, a detailed description, with flowsheet illustrations, is pro- vided on the evolution of the reclaim (reuse) water system at the Tilden concentrator. Mineral Industry Water Needs Beresford and Edler (1978) surmnarized the minerals industry's need for water this way: "minerals are necessary to a modern complex technological society. The minerals industry, while its water needs are relatively minor compared to large users such as agriculture, nevertheless requires a large quantity of water to carry out daily operations from mining to final product refining." In 1973 total water use in the United States was estimated at 15.14 billion cubic meters (4 trillion gallons) for the minerals industry. Of this, about 69% was recirculated within the system. In 1982 Watt and Horton stated that the percent of recycled water in the minerals industry had improved to 73%, showing the minerals industry is an efficient user of water and that steady improvement in water recycling is something the minerals industry can look to with pride. The percent of water needed by the United States' minerals industry was estimated in 1962 to be about 2% of the total water required by industry

The potential health effects of quartz-bearing airborne dust in mine and mill atmospheres point to the need for the quantification of quartz content in the source material for determining the source-sink relationships and for choosing applicable control measures. While a standard method exists from a regulatory point of view for the sampling of coal mine atmospheres for determining (i) respirable dust concentrations and (i) the amount of quartz in thesamples, there is no generally accepted standard method for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rocks. Generally, the bulk sample is reduced to a powder for producing quartz analysis samples. Extensive controls are necessary to ensure representativeness of the analysis samples when these are very minute fractions of the bulk samples. Since the amount of analysis sample is not limited, alternative methods for quartz analysis may also be tried. It is, however, necessary to adopt a procedure which will satisfy several statistical requirements to guarantee representativeness of the quartz analysis samples. In this paper, the important factors in the preparation of quartz analysis samples from the host rocks and bulk samples are discussed. The method developed to prepare the analysis samples is outlined. The results of application of the procedures are presented. The procedure developed for quartz analysis sample preparation is based on sound statistical foundations. The procedure has been validated for reproducibility and homogeneity.

"Understanding the influence of slurry particle size on wear is essential to maximising the life of centrifugal pumps operating in mineral processing plants and for hydrotransport duties. Particle size influences not only the wear rate but also the wear pattern in pumps. Complicating the situation is the different relative wear rate for different pump parts depending on particle size. A simple Slurry Wear Type (SWT) number based on particle size and size distribution is proposed as a means for categorising slurry pump wear patterns and optimising pump application and material selection. INTRODUCTION The wear of centrifugal slurry pumps in mineral processing and hydrotransport can be quite severe and is one of the major cost concerns of plant operators. Some typical worn slurry pump parts made from high chrome white iron are shown in Figure 1. Erosion wear rates of up to 2 mm/day are not uncommon [1].Centrifugal slurry pumps are required to handle solid-liquid mixtures with a very wide range of particles extending from sub-micron size clay through to 200mm and larger cobbles. Particle size distribution can also vary widely from uniform and narrow (such as graded sand) through to very broad (such as grinding circuit slurries). Slurry particles may also undergo size change due to attrition during the pumping process. The major wearing parts in a slurry pump are the impeller, side liners and casing liner. These are shown with reference to a Warman® MC centrifugal pump in Figure 2. While many particle properties (including size, shape, hardness, density and concentration) influence pump wear, this work will consider only the effect of particle size as it is the major determinant of wear characteristics. Particle size influences the wear pattern, material performance and relative component wear rate in centrifugal slurry pumps. INTRODUCTION Perspective The phrase "minerala resource appraisal" is widely and loosely used to refer to any quantitative description of a naturally occurring source of fuels, metals, or nonmetals. This leads to confusion when mineral resources are so conceived, for the term refers generically to information on stocks-mineral endowment, resources, reserves, and potential supply-that differ in ways that are important in economic analysis. Mineral resource and other stock measures- these are not flows, e.g., the supply of minerals-have precise technical meanings, which are presented in this paper. Quotation marks are used to separate the nontechnical use of mineral resource from the technical. The term appraisal also leads to some con- fusion because it too is loosely used. When an appraisal employs probability and statistical methods, the appropriate term is estimationb, not appraisal or assessment. This paper presents a conceptual framework or mineral resource information which renders technical, or well defined, relationships of mineral endowment to physical attributes of the earth's crust and earth processes, as distinct from economic values, and identifies estimation approaches that lead to different economic measures of stocks and flows. An important result of this approach is the distinction between the relevance of mineral resource information to economic and policy issues about potential sup- ply (stocks) and dynamic supply (flows across time). With regard to policy analysis, this paper recognizes that mineral resource information has a cost as well as an imputed value. Such a treatment implies that there is an optimum state of resource ignorance, or enlightenment, for a given policy issue and that the relevant economic issue is the selection of that information strategy and appraisal methodology that is indicated by the optimum state. Until the initiation of the OPEC oil embargo, the demand for information on mineral re- sources and potential supply was limited to occasional studies commissioned by Congress or the President of the United States. In these, mineral and energy resources remained loosely de- scribed. When quantitative estimates were supplied, they were not rigorously made, and the estimates and the methodology accordingly escaped close scrutiny. Usually, neither the geo- logical nor economic bases for estimation were carefully described or critically examined. The imposition by OPEC nations of the embargo on oil caused a sudden change in the public and scientific demands for specific 'resource" appraisals, especially of oil and of uranium. These

INTRODUCTION The maximum recovery of cleaned coal at the required quality is of major concern to plant operators. However, the quantity and quality of products of coal cleaning, predicted by theoretical calculation based on washability studies and determined in the operation of actual commercial cleaning plants, will be different for each coal. Therefore, during the last half century, coal preparation engineers have repeatedly sought methods for evaluating the technical and economical efficiency of separating coal in coal cleaning equipment and for predicting the quantity and quality of cleaned coal produced, as well as profit- ability for the entire plant. Many formulas have been proposed by investigators to evaluate the efficiency of various coal cleaning operations. Performance criteria in use today are capable of defining all of the important aspects of a given concentrating operation; however, each criterion has certain restrictions or limitations. It is important, therefore, to understand how such formulas can be used and the problems involved in their construction. Technical Measures of Equipment/Plant Performance Conventional measures for evaluating the performance of a preparation plant are generally the same as those used to evaluate equipment performance. Measures involving separation efficiencies are influenced by the following three broadly encompassing primary factors: (1) density composition of the feed coal, (2) design characteristics of the cleaning unit, and (3) relative density of the separation. Since separation efficiencies are dependent on factors involving the nature of the coal, they are termed dependent criteria and represent a very broad technical indicator of an individual process or plant performance. Performance measures known as independent criteria are influenced mainly by quantitative errors inherent in the design and operation of the processing equipment. Economic Measures of Plant Performance True assessment of coal cleaning methods require reference to economic measures such as profitability. During the years in which technical efficiency criteria for characterizing plant performance were being improved, coal preparation engineers were also seeking appropriate economic criteria to assess plant performance. Technical and economic effectiveness of plant performance are important parameters for coal preparation flowsheet design. INTRODUCTION Manufacturer sponsored research over the past three years has proven the suitability of styrene-butadiene/ asphalt membranes in many waste disposal seepage control applications for the mining industry in general and uranium mining and milling in particular. The class of membranes that have been tested are SBR/asphalt blends containing up to 68 weight percent asphalt, the balance being elastomeric polymers, fillers and phase compatibility promoters. These membranes are classified as thermoplastic, elastomeric materials and can be hot spray applied to any moderately dry substrate at 177°C (350°F), and placed in service within one hour of application. The properties of this membrane that make it suitable for use as an engineering_ material in these applications are discussed. These properties include chemical resistance, bacterial resistance, UV light resistance, permeability, stress/strain characteristics and bonding data. The favorable economics of the system are also discussed. The preliminary raw test data on the above properties were reported in a previous paper, (Chambers, 1980) and most will not be repeated here. Instead, this report considers the original data in relation to subsequent data and concentrates on interpretation of the trends for engineering purposes. However, several of the pictures contained in the original paper are reproduced in this report for illustration purposes. BACKGROUND Asphalt alone has a long history of use as a water-stop material. Its limitations of becoming brittle when cold and soft when hot, however, are well recognized. The service temperature for common grades of asphalt is usually in the 4° to 49°C (40° to 120° F) range. Modifications to the base asphalt can generally improve its performance at the high end of the temperature range by raising its softening point, but only the addition of one class of modifiers, elastomeric polymers, improves low temperature flexibility as well and also adds resilience. Both of these properties are of extreme importance if the waterstop material is to maintain its integrity when used on substrates which are unstable, non-cohesive, discontinuous or have significant expansion/constraction coefficients. INTRODUCTION Today, flotation is clearly the dominant mineral concentration method. Since it is a relatively selective process, it is used for almost all sulfide minerals. A recent U. S. Bureau of Mines study indicated that approximately 225 million metric tons of sulfide ore was processed in 67 plants in the United States in 1980 (USBM Staff, 1981). There were over 100 plants processing copper ores in the world (Bassarear, 1985). Sulfide ores containing lead, zinc, copper, molybdenum, precious metals, cobalt, nickel, and iron are generally separated and concentrated by flotation. This chapter briefly reviews the plant practice related to the recovery of the above-mentioned sulfide minerals with emphasis on chemical reagents used for the production of marketable-grade products. PROCESSING OF SULFIDE ORES It is beyond the scope of this chapter to review the milling data for operating plants which have been extensively covered in literature (Tveter and McQuiston, 1962; Rausch and Mariacher, 1970; Weiss, 1985; Crozier, 1979). However, the following generalizations can be made regarding the processing of sulfide ores: 1. The primary grind is targeted to produce as coarse a product as necessary to provide an economic degree of liberation. 2. The concentration process, generally flotation, is designed to produce a concentrate consisting predominantly of valuable minerals and a middling fraction which may require further grinding to produce an optimum release of minerals. 3. The chemical reagent suite (collectors, frothers, etc.) for the separation of sulfide minerals from gangue minerals is generally complex. Total reagents used in the flotation process can be as high as six to eight, as is the case for lead and molybdenite separation from complex sulfide ores. 4. Chemical reagents are generally expensive because of the high selectivity for sulfide minerals. The process flowsheet is dependent on several factors, including ore grade and mineralogical composition. Generic process flowsheets for processing different sulfide ores have been developed for discussion in this chapter. However, there appears to be a consistent relationship between the reagent combination choice and the mineralogical composition of the ore (Tveter and McQuiston, 1962). These are covered in detail in the following sections. LEAD AND ZINC Galena (PbS) and sphalerite (ZnS), which commonly occur together, are the only minerals of lead and zinc, respectively, in most primary deposits. Feed ore grades are typically 1 to 5 percent Pb and 1 to 10 percent Zn. Very often economic quantities of copper and precious metals, silver and gold, also occur with these base metals.

The STG integrated method of grouting can be divided into the several phases as outlined in preceding chapters. For convenience in describing technical procedures, they can be grouped as: 1. Investigations in non-geotechnical, exploration bore¬holes. 2. Drilling the holes necessary for geotechnical investiga¬tions and for grouting. 3. Conducting appropriate hydrogeologic tests in those holes and consequent calculations. 4. The preparation of a clay mortar. 5. The preparation of a clay-cement grout with additives. 6. The injection of the grout. 7. Checking the quality of the grout curtain. Items 2, 4, 5 and 6 are discussed below. These activities contain the procedural aspects of grouting. 7.1 DRILLING GROUT HOLES Grout holes belong to a very select class of drillholes. The necessary drilling equipment must enable the operator to drill the holes in inclined, twisting directions. In addi¬tion, the equipment must permit drilling under structurally and hydrogeologically complex conditions. The equipment must permit the operator to conduct specific testing activi¬ties in the drillholes. These activities include hydrodynamic analyses, flowmetric analysis, and the installation and re¬moval of deflectors, packers, grouting plugs, casings, lin¬ers, pumping facilities and other work. As explained in Chapters 5 and 6, the grouting of sat¬urated rock is conducted both through holes drilled from the surface and through holes drilled from the face of a shaft, drift, or tunnel. The drilling of grout holes from the surface can be carried out by an aggregate of equipment that can be the same equipment used for drilling exploration boreholes. Depending on the projected depth of the holes, the STG ZIF- 1200MR and ZIF-650 drilling rigs (or modifications of them) are used. The SKB-4, SKB-5 and SKB-7 high-output drilling rigs (workover rigs) have been used in recent years. The STG BMP-24 drilling rigs are used for carrying out the descent-lifting operations for drilling holes from the sur¬face. In a number of cases, the UKB-500C, URB-3AM and URB-2A power-fed drilling equipment is used for drilling holes from the surface. It should be noted that the drilling of grout holes usually requires an electric drive assembly. Drilling with diesel drive assemblies would be used only to preclude the possi¬bility of losing electric power during drilling operations. Turbine drilling would be used only for appropriate techni¬cal-economic reasons. The selection of the grout hole design is determined by the hydrogeological and structural geological conditions at the site as interpreted in Chapters 2 and 3. The design of grout holes must be as simple as possible in order to min¬imize costs. Hole design guidelines can be adopted as a basis for this purpose, unless site-specific conditions require otherwise. The mouth of the drillhole must be outfitted with a guide-pipe having a length of at least 2 m and an outside diameter from 219 to 234 mm. The upper part of the hole must be attached by a jig consisting of borehole casing that has a diameter ranging from 108 to 146 mm. The length of the jig h is determined by the equation [ ] where k = 1.1 to 1.2 is the load factor; P,, is the injection pressure of the grout into the mouth of the drillhole; D is the external diameter of the jig pipe; m = 0.6 to 0.7 is the work condition factor; T[ ].1 MPa is the bonding value of the rock cemented to the jig. The grout hole is drilled from the jig shoe to the de¬signed depth using a rock-crushing bit with a diameter of 93 mm or more. However in complex hydrogeological condi¬tions when the shaft intersects unstable rock, other hole designs can be used. The diameter of grout holes must permit an aggregate of investigations to be conducted in them using down-hole borehole geophysical and flowmetric logging instruments. It is necessary to cement the casing strings reliably in the grout holes, thereby permitting the injection of the grout under high pressure through the pres¬sure tight mouth of the borehole. Technological details for drilling grout holes such as the rotational rate of the drill bit, the axial load on the rock¬crushing bit, and the drilling fluid flow rate are optimized for the specific rock-hydrogeological conditions largely by experience. The hole diameter and type of rock crushing bit are important variables in these details of drilling. It is advisable to drill holes using water as the drilling fluid. However in those cases where the hole walls are unstable or under very high ground water pressure, the use of a well¬ engineered drilling mud should not be precluded. Unfortu¬nately, drilling mud can influence test results. When steeply dipping fractures with inclination angles of more than 60 to 70° are encountered, it is necessary to drill guided, inclined grout holes. "Highwall miners continue to be implemented by operations to increase recovery, improve margins, and justify higher stripping ratios as high quality surface reserves become increasingly rare. Many times, operations facilitate projected underground operations by leaving an intact highwall for development purposes. These facts result in larger highwalls that are left standing for increased periods of time prior to reclamation. As a consequence, worker exposure and risk is also elevated, resulting in higher potential for accidents or fatalities relating to surface highwalls. Highwall stability is a complex issue, dependent on both geologic and mining factors. Dynamic numerical modeling offers the capability to assess possible stability issues related to blasting-induced ground vibrations. Research has been conducted to evaluate the effect of highwall stability due to ground vibrations from blasting events. Additionally, the relationship of amplitude and frequency, and their impact on highwall stability is investigated. The results of this modeling indicate that amplitude has little impact on stability. However, frequency has a significant impact on highwall stability. INTRODUCTION The number of mining fatalities has declined since 2010, and 2016 is currently on pace to continue this trend (MSHA 2016). This decline can be directly correlated to the decline in surface mining activity and the overall decline of the coal industry. However, since 2002 the percentage of surface coal mine fatalities associated with highwall activities remains relatively high, constituting approximately 15% of all surface mine fatalities. 2014 was the first year with a highwall failure fatality since 2011. Most recent surface coal mining fatalities are associated with machinery and haulage. Table 1 provides a summary of the total surface coal mining fatalities, and the number of highwall failure fatalities dating back to 2010.Highwall stability is a complex issue, dependent upon geology and geologic discontinuities within the rock mass, along with highwall geometry, standing time, and applied stresses. Another possible concern that has not been previously investigated is the effect of blasting-induced stresses on highwall stability and the stability of web/barrier pillar systems as a result of ground vibrations from blasting events. Many modern surface coal mines employ numerous extraction fronts that rely on blasting for primary rock breakage. This results in highwall and highwall pillar systems experiencing blasting-induced stresses of many different types and magnitudes."

INTRODUCTION The selective sensitivity of plastic nuclear track detectors (PNTD's) to low energy 4He particles in an environment which also contains gamma and beta radiations has made these detectors prime candidates for the dosimetric measurement of the concentrations of radon and its daughter products in mine air. Their passive, integrating mode of measurement, small size, low weight and inexpensiveness are attractive characteristics for large scale personnel dosimetry. The detectors can be used in either active or passive dosimeters. In active devices, the PNTD is placed in close proximity to a sampling filter. The filter collects, from a calibrated air flow, all the daughter nuclei which are in suspension. As the daughter nuclei pass through the decay chain, through 214Po, a fraction of the 4He particles emitted are registered as latent tracks in the plastic. In passive devices, the PNTD is placed in direct contact with the ambient air containing the radio-nuclei concentrations to be determined. The active dosimeters have the advantage of excellent sensitivity, and the measured track densities yield very close approximations to accumulated Working Level (WL)** exposures. They have the disadvantage that the simplicity of the passive PNTD is lost, since a battery-driven constant flow-rate air pump is a necessity. The passive dosimeters are simple in construction and use, but they have the disadvantage that WL exposures are not directly measured and certain assumptions concerning radon and daughter equilibrium conditions must be made in determining WL exposures from the measured track densities. Also the sensitivities, in track densities per Working Level Hour (WLH) exposure, are much less than for active dosimeters. Dosimeters of both types have been investigated. Passive devices have been tested extensively both in the laboratory and in mines. Active devices have been laboratory tested. In our earlier measurements, cellulose nitrate plastic detectors were used exclusively, since this material had the highest sensitivity of the PNTD's then in use. When the properties of CR-39 plastic were discovered (Cartwright, 1978; Cassou and Benton, 1978), this material was used, where possible, to take advantage of its superior sensitivity. The results of our earlier work have previously been published (Frank and Benton, 1977). * Research sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of Interior, under Contract No. JO-188003. ** A Working Level is defined as any combination of the short-lived radon daughters containing 1.3 x 105 MeV of potential 4He-particle energy per liter of ambient air. PASSIVE DOSIMETRY In the earliest testing of PNTD's for passive WL dosimetry, a single strip of cellulose nitrate plastic was used to determine the total cumulative 4He-particle activity in the air of simulated uranium mine and uranium mine environments (Rock, 1968; Rock [et al], 1969; White, 1969). The measurements yielded a close relationship between track densities and WL exposures in a controlled, static environment, but poor accuracy in the active mine tests. It was assumed that equilibrium differences contributed largely to the variations found. The response of PNTD's to airborne 4He-particle emitters, derived by Lovett (1969), demonstrated that detectors such as cellulose nitrate, which has a sensitivity cutoff at 4He-particle energies below the emission energies of radon and its daughters, are equally sensitive to the activity concentrations of radon, 218po(RaA) and 214Po(RaC'). Since radon does not contribute to WL as it is defined, and since, under normal ventilated uranium mine conditions, the radon activity constitutes about 40% to 70% of the total 4He-particle activity, the WL exposures calculated from measured track densities are very sensitive to the particular radon daughter equilibrium conditions. Also, the detector does not weight the individual daughter activities in proportion to their importance to WL. The equation for WL is WL = 0.00103C2 + 0.00507C3 + 0.00373C4 (1) where C2, C3 and C4 are the activity concentrations of RaA, RaB and RaC-C', respectively, in pCi/[L]. The detector leaves C3 unmeasured and weights C2 and C4, equally. [This problem has been approached by Domanski et al (1975, 1979), for some non-uranium mines, by measuring equilibrium conditions throughout the mines to determine a mean value for A, the inverse of the Working Level Ratio (WLR = 100 WL where C1 is the activity of radon-222 in pCi/[L].) The distribution of values allowed Domanski to determine probable errors in calculating WL exposures from track densities. However, measurements of equilibrium conditions in U.S. uranium mines (Breslin et al, 1969; Holub and Droullard, 1978) indicate that this method would not be accurate enough for uranium miner personal dosimetry.] A two-element dosimeter was designed at our laboratory to compensate for equilibrium variations. The first element is a radon detector; the second is a detector for the total 4He-particle activity in the ambient air, just as in the single element dosimeters cited above. The addition of the radon detector allows the equilibrium conditions for the individual nuclei to be determined, given certain assumptions concerning the interrelationships between the nuclei concentrations in mine air. The two detectors and the problems involved in calculating WL exposures from their measurements are discussed below.

The DC Graphite Melter has been shown to be capable of processing radioactive waste materials. The process is characterized by its high temperature capability and operation in a closed system. From an environmental perspective, the control of emissions coupled with destruction for hazardous organic materials is mandatory. These same characteristics may be applicable to the minerals processing industry. Under normal operation, the system reaches temperatures for nominal operation of 1600°C, with an arc temperature in the order of 5000°C. The system temperature is determined by the melt temperature of the material being processed. In testing of a 750 lb/hour unit, temperatures of 2200°C were reached. Current focus is on finding waste treatment and metals recovery opportunities in the metals processing industry for his innovative technology.

"INTRODUCTIONEdilmac dei F.lli Maccabelli (hereinafter referred to as Edilmac) has recently developed a special civil engineering application using the Raise Boring technology with the assistance of Inrock MGS (Magnetic Guidance System). Applying the Paratrack Magnetic Guidance System coupled with a directional mud motor to the drill string allows a better accuracy compared to standard drilling, as showed in our tests. This is the first time the Paratrack System has been applied to the Raise Boring technology. RAISE BORING METHOD STATEMENT The Raise Boring technology was born in North America during the Sixties. In 1962, Ingersoll and Robbins were the first companies to produce Raise Boring Machines (RBM). The technology was first used in the underground mine industry, in order to bore ventilation shafts and passes through different levels, thus reducing the cost of haulage. The Raise Boring method is only feasible in stable rock conditions. The Raise Boring method consists of drilling a small diameter pilot hole that reaches a tunnel located at the bottom of the drilled hole. Once the pilot hole reaches the tunnel, a reamer head is installed at the end of the drill string and pulled up, creating the hole with the designed diameter (Figures 1 and 2). The main equipment, which is required to perform Raise Boring activities, is the following: •,An RBM; •,A tricone bit; •,Drilling rods; •,A reaming head; The standard mucking of the pilot hole is done with water or bentonite mud. For the last 30 years, Edilmac has developed a mucking process, which uses compressed air with the addition of foam or a small amount of water for dust control.Pilot hole tricone. The drilling of the pilot hole is usually performed with a tricone bit having a diameter between 11” (27.61 cm) and 15” (38.10 cm) (Figure 3). High strength rods. They generally have a diameter ranging from 10” (25.40 cm) to 12 ?” (32.70 cm) (Figure 4), depending on the length and the final diameter of the shaft."

"Since the mid-19th century the River Emscher in the German Ruhr District has been used for disposing of wastewater. In the early 1990s, it was decided to replace the existing open wastewater system with a sewer system and to restore the River Emscher to its natural state. The major Emscher conversion project is divided into a large number of individual schemes, with construction phase 30 being the largest. By applying the pipe jacking method, interlinking tunnels with section lengths in excess of 1,100 m are constructed. USAGE OF THE EMSCHER OVER TIME The 85-km long river Emscher flows right through the Ruhr District. It has its source to the east of Dortmund and flows into the river Rhine near Dinslaken (Figure 1).The Emscher has been used to dispose of wastewater since industrialization began about 200 years ago. Intensive coal mining over the years led to considerable subsidence causing stagnant sewer areas which in turn led to typhus and other deceases. Thus in 1899, the Emschergenossenschaft was founded to create an efficient interceptor system for a catchment area of 865 km² through lining, raising and Emschergenossenschaft decided to free the waterways of the Emscher system from sewage and to improve them in ecological terms by 2020. A budget of 4.5 billion euros was earmarked for this purpose.The construction of sewer conduits began in order to no longer transfer the wastewater into the Emscher. The currently ongoing construction of the “Emscher Interceptor” - the main sewer - represents the heart of the Emscher conversion project. The interceptor will run along the river over a length of 51 km. Three pumping stations are required to confine the sewer’s depth to elevations between 15 and a maximum of 40 m below the surface. Since early 2012, the Emscher has been free from wastewater east of the Dortmund-Deusen clarification plant. There are two further clarification plants situated along the Emscher, which treat the still contaminated river water down-stream. Once the Emscher Interceptor is in operation, they will receive wastewater solely from the tunnel system."

Pipe canopies continue to gain momentum as a reliable methodology for construction of excavations below critical facilities with minimal surface settlement tolerances, such as railroads or roadways. Two tunnel projects designed by Kilduff Underground Engineering in the Salt Lake City, UT area, each at varying stages of completion, had project design criteria for selection of a tunneling methodology to minimize surface settlement. Both projects consist of a pedestrian tunnel, one crossing beneath a major roadway in downtown Salt Lake City and the second beneath UPRR tracks. Both projects were in difficult, coarse alluvium/fan ground conditions with project criteria that resulted in minimal cover above the tunnel. For each project, a pre-support pipe canopy was designed, requiring the placement of steel, canopy pipes driven the extent of the tunnel length. The pipe canopy is installed using a trenchless technology and then excavated with SEM tunneling and shoring provided by traditional support of excavation methods. The pipe canopy pre-support method offers a low-impact method to install an underpass beneath critical structures by adding significant stiffness to the subgrade to mitigate surface settlement during the main tunnel excavation sequence. These case studies seek to communicate the challenges associated with pipe canopy installation in site-specific ground conditions and explains how these challenges were overcome. This paper aims to define the project risks and describes the pipe canopy methodology as a viable solution to mitigate surface settlement in low cover tunneling scenarios.

Geologically and commercially, the term diatomite is applied to the nearly pure sedimentarv accumulation of diatom frustules- the microscopic skeletons of unicellular aquatic algae belonging to the class of golden brown algae, bacillariophyceae. The sediments are fine-grained, siliceous, and consist primarily of amorphous opaline silica with only minor amounts of organic residue, secondary minerals, and co-deposited non-diatomaceous or crystalline clastic debris. In the geological sense, the name diatomite implies sedimentary accumulations that have reached appreciable thickness and when thick enough, such accumulations consequently may have possible commercial potential. Although the term diatomite is popularly and inappropriately applied to any sediment in which there is an abundance of diatom frustules, alternative terminology is more correctly employed to describe the less pure diatomaceous sediments, for example: clay-bearing diatomite or diatom-bearing clay. Synonyms in current usage include diatomaceous earth and kieselghur. More antiquated and obsolete terminology includes tripoli-powder, tripolite, and infusorial earth. Worldwide, diatomites occur within Tertiary to Recent lacus- trine and marine sedimentary facies. Although diatomite is wide- spread throughout the world, deposits that contain high purity, commercially versatile ore are uncommon. Physical properties of the diatom and of processed diatomite that provide unique commercial value in a broad spectrum of market end-uses include ornate fine structure, low bulk density, and high porosity and surface area. Properties of equal importance are mild abrasiveness, high absorptive capacity, insulating ability, relative inertness, and high brightness. End-use markets are diverse and range from insulating brick and absorbents through quality sensitive filter aids and premium quality functional fillers. Notwithstanding both the economic attractiveness of the specialty markets and the commercial versatility of the high purity deposits, deposits of lesser purity are mined in nearly all parts of the world for less demanding uses. Mining costs are minimized through open pit quarrying, but in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America underground mining methods are also employed. Blasting is not required because diatomite is soft and easily broken loose with mechanized equipment. Following gentle crushing, the ore is dried, milled, and processed into one of three broad categories of products: naturally milled, straight calcined, and flux calcined grades. Each of these principal categories is further subdivided into additional grades through particle size adjustment of the powders. Agglomeration of particles, alteration of fine structure, and color change are achieved through calcination. Flux calcination further accentuates these changes. Production throughout the world is dominated by the United States, followed by Romania, the former Soviet republics, and France. Other major producers include Spain, Mexico, Iceland, Korea, Japan, and Germany. Denmark is a major producer of Moler earth products, which consist of a diatomite-clay mixture. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The first industrial use of diatomite can be traced back some 2000 years to the Greeks and to the use of diatomaceous earth as a component in lightweight building brick and in ceramic pottery. It was not until the mid-1800s, however, that the unique properties of diatomite were first recognized and the market end-uses explored and developed. One of the most important of the early uses followed the development of dynamite by Alfred Nobel in the mid-1860s, whereupon diatomite was used as a component of the explosive to improve stability and safety. Other early uses included low temperature insulating and refractory bricks and as a component in insulating and fireproofing construction panels. During the 1920s, processing technology underwent a very rapid evolution with the development of calcination, flux calcination, and air classification technologies. Through these technologies, innumerable different size and grade classifications could be made for market applications and for rapidly diversified end- uses. Today, the application of processed diatomite for filter aid is the largest of the quality sensitive end-uses. Specific filtration uses include the clarification of beer, wine and liquor, vegetable oil, syrup and sugar, pharmaceuticals, and swimming pool water, to name a few. As a functional filler and extender, processed diatomite is ideally suited for application in paint, rubber, and plastic formulations. Other filler applications include use as an anti-blocking agent in plastic film, anti-caking agent for fertilizer, thermal insulating material, catalyst carrier, polish, abrasive, pesticide and fertilizer carrier, and chromatographic supports. Throughout much of the world diatomite is still used as a component of insulating brick and as an absorbent.
