INTRODUCTION The process engineer usually is responsible for the design operating philosophy and/or day-to-day operations of a process. Since instrumentation is an integral part of the operation, it is essential that engineers understand the general capabilities of the different types of control equipment available. Many "noncontrol" engineers have become involved with instrumentation for machinery monitoring and control as well as other plant applications. The advent of the microprocessor has led to significant changes in control, both in systems configurations and man-machine interfaces. Today's concept is called simply "distributed control." What is distributed control? Distributed control is exactly what the name implies; the control system is divided into several functional segments and spread out to cover a process. The systems are distributed for physical, functional, and risk reasons. Before delving further into the specifics of distributed control, let's look at the evolution of control systems to see how we got here. Instruments initially were located near measurement and control points in the field. Operators physically had to go to the instrument to change setpoints or take measurements. As processes became more complex, it became evident that a central control area was required. This allowed an operator to monitor and control many variables. The operator's effectiveness was increased dramatically, which resulted in greater efficiency, better quality control, and lower personnel requirements. At the same time, plants became much larger, control applications became more complex, energy became expensive, and the industry became more competitive. All of these factors placed pressure on process and production engineers to get the most for the money. The result was a continuing push to put more instrumentation into a central control room to maximize efficiency and productivity and minimize manpower. This chapter deals in some detail with devices for measuring physical and chemical properties of coal; devices for measuring the weight and weight-rate of flow of coal; devices for the monitoring and control of conveyor systems, solids inventory, fluid flow, liquid level, density, and specific gravity. These instruments have a multitude of uses throughout a coal preparation plant. In relating geology and mineral resources to the nongeologist engaged in planning and zoning, a major hurdle to overcome is often the concept of natural resources. Statements listing such "resources" generally include and often may he limited to such items as "open space", "buildings of historical value", "forest and wilderness areas", and "sites of natural beauty" but seldom mention minerals even where they are of significant economic importance to the area. Unfortunately, mention of mineral resources is often limited to statements calling for tight controls on mining to prevent "ravaging of the land". While, the concept of sequential use involving mining is sometimes acknowledged, it is frequently done in such a manner that this approach is discouraged. In the conflict for land between urban development, recreational open space and mineral extraction, far too often the mineral industry will be the loser. In Missouri, there have long been continuing requests for geologic and resource data for planning purposes from city and county government and from Federal agencies for inclusion in the various river basin studies and Soil Conservation Service projects. These reports vary in detail from concise statements of the geology of an area to rather lengthy reports on mineral and water resources, bed rock and engineering geology characteristics. In most cases, these reports as written were directed to a geologically-oriented reader. Our initial approach to presenting geologic data to the land-use planner was in the area of engineering geology with attempts to show the limitations that bedrock and soil conditions can place on development. Electricity, as normally thought of by a layman's definition, is a man- made force that has no color, no odor, is not visible, cannot be heard, yet man can control it and make it perform his work for him. A person dare not cheat on it, for it then will master him. It has laws, rules, and regulations that must be strictly adhered to if it is to perform in the safest, most reliable, and economical manner. In the early days of coal mining the power source was man himself. Later man employed steam and compressed air to reduce his muscle power requirements needed in the extraction of coal. By the turn of the 20th century, electricity had become the most common source of power for the coal industry. Steam and compressed air are still found in use in isolated cases today for specific applications; however, they are rapidly being replaced by electricity. Electrical laws and regulations are quite extensive and somewhat complex for the proper generation and use of electricity. Man-made laws, rules, and regulations for the care and handling of electricity, designed for man's safety, are rigidly enforced by Mine Safety and Health Ad- ministration (MSHA), as well as the various state departments of mines.

When a solid-liquid mixture is conveyed through a pipe,' four hydrodynamic conditions may develop depending upon the properties of the transporting medium, the properties of the transported material, the properties of the pipeline and the flow characteristics. They are classified as homogeneous flow, heterogeneous flow, intermediate flow and saltation. Heterogeneous flow, which is the subject of the present analysis, occurs when solid particles are coarse, of high density, and the mean velocity of the flow is relatively low, such that the combination allows the establishment of a pronounced concentration gradient in the cross-section of the pipe. In this type of system the suspended matter does not change the rheological properties of the conveying fluid, and solid and fluid phases behave somewhat separately. In recent years much work has been directed toward gaining more insight into the hydrodynamics of heterogeneous flow (1,2,3,4,5,) However, almost all knowledge obtained is empirical in nature and limited in scope. Much effort has been extended to collect experimental information on the energy losses associated with systems of slurry flow (6-13) The work of Durand and Condolios(14,15) represents one of the most extensive experimentations in this field. Through systematic test runs, the effects of the major flow-parameters were studied one at a time. From the results, they concluded empirically that:

The Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has partnered with a narrow vein, hard rock underground mine to research the effects of the binder content on the elasticity and post-peak ductility of cemented hydraulic backfill (CHB). This is part of a larger study to enhance the long-term integrity of ground support in underground mines. As mining advances deeper and stresses increase, CHB mix designs will benefit if they can be modified to handle higher levels of strain which are induced by an increased stope closure, typically affected by a reduction in stope width and increased mining depth, or through dynamic loading resulting from a local seismic event. This portion of the research examined the impact of reductions in binder and their impact on Young’s modulus, peak strength, and post-peak ductility.

The low-shear viscosity of kaolin slurries is one of the principal characteristics that determines whether the clay can be utilized for paper and ceramic applications. In this work, causes of poor low-shear viscosity and methods of improving rheology have been investigated. The presence of fine-grained smectite impurities within the kaolin was shown to detrimentally affect the low-shear rheology of slurries produced from these clays. It was also shown that mechanically working (i.e., pugging) a crude kaolin followed by desliming to remove these impurities can reduce the low-shear viscosity.

The leaching behavior of copper powders recovered from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) was investigated using electrogenerated chlorine and aeration in a sulfuric acid solution with added NaCl and CuSO4. Various parameters were studied to understand the mechanism of the copper leaching. When the current density increased from 0 to 0.1 A/cm2, the temperature from 30 to 60° C, agitation speed from 100 to 400 rpm, and the size ranged from below 75 to 150 µm, the leaching ratios of copper powders increased. The leaching kinetics were analyzed using a shrinking core model: 1-(1-X)1/3 = kt, and the leaching process was chemically controlled with an activation energy of 14.7 kJ/mol due to Cl- ion catalysis. The ratios of [Cu+]/[Cu2+] at various temperatures (30, 40, 50, 60 and 70° C) showed a periodic variation with the increasing of the leaching time. The redox potentials of the leaching solution and copper leaching ratios in different conditions were measured. The result indicates that dissolved oxygen achieved the dissolution of coppers and electrogenerated chlorine can promote the dissolution of copper powders and improve the reaction rate of kinetics in the presence of oxygen.

The exploration geologist is frequently confronted with the problem of allocating his resources, i.e., exploration effort, among various areas. Although geologic, financial and logistic considerations influence the allocations, no objective criterion is usually given which determines the optimal allocation. Maximizing the gain in information, subject to the constraint of a limited exploration budget, is used as the objective criterion to allocate reconnaissance effort. The information function, I(x), quantifies the expected gain in information, where x is the scale of exploration. To calculate the information function the following data are necessary: 1. The probability that an area contains a target must be estimated. 2. For each scale of exploration, four probabilities must be estimated: the probability that an anomaly is produced by the target; the probability that an anomaly is not produced by the target; the probability that an anomaly is produced by a barren area (false signal); and the probability that an anomaly is not produced by a barren area. Alternatively, the barren area can be replaced by other targets. To illustrate the allocation model, the optimal number of line kilometers/line spacing per area is determined for an aeromagnetic survey for iron in Egypt.

The VERTIMILL has proven itself to be a reliable performer in heavy duty industrial applications. Applications have been extensively used in the mining industry, flue gas desulfurization applications, and industrial minerals field. The machine is a vertically stirred machine that utilizes a screw operating in a grinding media. Grinding media types have ranged from several sizes of steel balls as the most common to pebbles or ceramic media. Mesh-of-grind and final product size are the determining criterion for the selection of the media size used. Product size consists have ranged from very coarse to super-fine grinds of less than 25 microns. Savings in consumption of power, grinding media, and liners when compared to a conventional ball mills, have been realized. Savings in consumption of reagents have also been demonstrated.

INTRODUCTION Run-of-mine (ROM) coal generally falls into two major groups: that from underground mining (continuous mining machines) and that from strip mining. Continuous miners produce a finer product and strip mining a coarser product that is crushed to produce the desired size. Further size reduction depends on the proposed use or uses for the coal. For example, for pulverized coal power plants as a rough general rule, the coal is ground or pulverized to 80% less than 200 mesh (0.075 mm) before it is blown into the boiler furnace as a coal-air suspension. For solvent-refined coal processes, the desired size is about <30 mesh (< 0.60 mm); in fluidized bed uses, the coal is typically < 8, in. (< 1.6 mm); for Lurgi pressure gasifiers, the desired size is 1 to 2% in. (25 to 63 mm). Coal preparation plants typically work with a coarse size fraction of 6X 1/14 in. (150X32 mm). The past decades has shown a steady increase in the tonnage of coal cleaned, 1 but it seems probable that the next decades will produce much wider applica- tion of deep coal cleaning before use and that the stages of crushing and pulverization from ROM coal to end use will be integrated with coal cleaning processes. Since different cleaning processes work better with different ranges of coal size and the degree of cleaning possible is intimately connected with the size of coal, a systems design engineer will need as much information as possible concerning the size distributions produced by different types of machines and how these can be modified by different ways of operating the machines. In general, the following questions will be of concern: 1.What type of crusher or grinder is best, or most satisfactory, for reducing a given feed size and type of coal to a desired product size? Frequently, the desired product is smaller than some nominal size, but with as few fines as possible, or the fraction in some size range has to be as high as possible. 2. How big does the machine have to be for a given throughput rate? 3. How much electrical energy (or its equivalent) is required per ton of product? 4. How does the size distribution vary with change in throughput rate, and is a control scheme necessary or desirable? 5. Can the size distribution be readily varied if desired? 6. What is the optimum way to operate a machine in a given system? This section will emphasize certain general principles which guide us in answering these questions. This article could be entitled "The Rediscovery of the Windfall Mine," since it was originally discovered early in this century. The "Rediscovery" was made by personnel of Idaho Mining Corp. during the course of an investigation of the Windfall mine beginning in 1967. There had been historic production from the Windfall mine sporadically from 1908 until 1951 and there was present during much of this time a mill that vat leached crushed ore. Mining was underground to a depth of 91 m (300 ft). Prior to Idaho&apos;s activities, the mine had been inactive since the early 1950s. Idaho Mining Corp. was an "exploration company," privately owned and based in Reno, NV. The writer was at that time manager of exploration for Idaho Mining. The company held interests in the Cortez Gold mine, then being readied for production, and had conducted exploration for various mineral commodities in Nevada for several years. Idaho&apos;s attention was first directed to the Windfall mine in the Eureka District, Eureka County, Nevada (see Fig. 1, Nevada map) by a search of published geologic literature of the state of Nevada. An attempt was made to acquire a library consisting of all of the published geo-data for the state of Nevada as well as to obtain as much of the unpublished material as could be acquired. A study of these data, and in particular Tom Nolan&apos;s Professional Paper 406 (1962), indicated that the Windfall mine was anomalous for the Eureka District in that it contained deposits of disseminated gold. This source and other sources indicated that the Windfall had produced from underground operations approximately 59 kt (65,000 tons) grading 12.6 g/t (0.368 oz per ton) gold ore that was processed in a vat leaching operation and that the gold was "invisible" to the naked eye and could not be panned. It was ascertained that there were no active operations near the mine and a geologic reconnaissance was made and a few samples were taken to attempt to determine if the mineralization was indeed disseminated. The initial group of samples around the mine area averaged 1.25 ppm [11.5 g/t gold (0.036 oz per ton)] and the mineralization did appear to disseminate into the wallrock. The next step involved researching the ownership of property in the immediate area of the mine, and [ ] a property map was constructed that showed six or seven different ownerships of patented and unpatented claims, as well as some open ground, in the target area. The siting, grading and fill usage for leach pads are important aspects of leach pad design. A method is presented that optimizes the cut and fill quantities (i.e. minimizes the cost) required to grade a leach pad with parallel cells; given the desired pad characteristics of maximum and minimum pad slopes, maximum cut and fill depths, etc. and the cut and fill costs. The method allows the variation of the cut and fill costs with depth, which allows the accurate modeling of the cost savings practice of using cheaper fill towards the bottom of a thick fill. This optimization could be incorporated into a CAD package, enabling a designer to simply draw a desired pad shape on a site plan, input the pad and heap characteristics (required heap volume, heap height, heap sideslopes, etc.) and then have the computer report both the adequacy of the pad area and the optimum grading for the particular pad shape. Using this, a designer could quickly and accurately assess the optimum, or cheapest, grading of many shapes and positions for a leach pad. This would be especially useful for large pads that need to be sited on rough terrain.

Disposal of mine tailings in "waters of the United States" is presently prohibited even though case studies indicate that the practice may be environmentally viable. To simulate disposal in the natural environment, nine containers of tailings and sediment were instrumented and placed on the ocean floor near Juneau, AK as were ninety-six biosample containers. Pore water concentrations of five metals were determined, and biota populations were characterized for both materials. After 500 days of exposure there were no statistical macro scale differences between tailings and sediment biota populations or Cu, Pb, and Zn pore water concentrations. Tailings released slightly more Fe than sediment, but sediment released significantly more Mn than tailings. Disposal of mine tailings in marine waters may be environmentally safe.

Mining-related wastes, which are increasing, are being utilized more and more as valuable resources in Virginia. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) divides mining-related wastes into two categories: those generated from mineral extraction and beneficiation and those generated from mineral processing. Materials from both categories are produced in Virginia, where waste (by-product) materials are present at a variety of mining sites and processing plants; some of which have been exploited for various uses in the past and/or present. These materials include: used concrete recycled for roadbase material; pyrite coated with magnetite for use in portland cement; minor amounts of fly ash for use in concrete block, lightweight aggregate, and flowable structural fills; granite and diabase quarry fines for use as agricultural and asphalt filler; lime kiln dust for use in neutralizing and stabilizing coal refuse; soapstone aggregate for use in terrazzo heat retention panels; kaolin for use as a filler product and as an ingredient in white cement; slate quarry fines used as landcover and combined with aggregate for crusher run and as a filler in asphalt; and coal refuse for use as fuel in a lightweight aggregate plant. There are some materials available that have never been utilized, although several ideas were investigated to turn them into usable commodities. One such material is a high-alumina scrap produced as a by-product at a ferrovanadium processing plant. However, large quantities of waste materials from metal mining, industrial mineral, and fossil fuel operations remain to be disposed of in an environmentally safe and economic manner. In 1989, almost one million tons of fly ash were produced from burning of coal at eight coal-fired power plants in Virginia. Present uses for this waste such as an ingredient in concrete block, concrete aggregate, and in structural fills cannot dispose of all the available material; however, increased use of fly ash as a soil/rock substitute for structural fills and embankments may solve the problem of its disposal. Another waste material is calcium carbonate precipitate paste produced at a lithium carbonate processing plant and presently being used for back filling an on-site inactive underground limestone mine. Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastes in the form of CaS04 will probably increase threefold. If this material contains a minimum of 95 percent gypsum and negligible chloride, it may have a value to a wallboard manufacturer as we move toward the year 2000. Thought must be given how this increasing waste can be disposed of in an environmentally safe manner.

Shale gas wells drilled in longwall chain pillars are influenced by longwall mining. Longwall mining on each side of the chain pillars can create overburden movements and induce deformations in gas well casings. If the deformations result in a casing breach, intrusive shale gas could leak into the longwall mine with serious safety consequences. This study concerns five shale gas wells in the chain pillars between two adjacent longwall panels in the Pittsburgh coal seam under a cover depth of 670 ft and a mining height of 7 ft. The gas wells were constructed with typical casing design, but a casing cementing alternative with uncemented production casings was practiced. Four production casings were uncemented, and one production casing was unintentionally cemented with good quality cement to a 535-ft depth and low-quality cement stringers from a 444- to 535-ft depth. The longwall faces passed by the shale gas wells as each adjacent longwall panel retreated. Production casings were surveyed by a multi-finger caliper after each panel was mined. No deformation was detected in the four uncemented production casings, but small deformations were detected in the partially cemented production casing. The maximum measured deformation in the cemented production casing was 0.05 in. after first panel mining and 0.06 in. after second panel mining. The casing deformations were also predicted by the FLAC3D model set up on site-specific overburden geology. The predicted deformations were in good agreement with the measurements in terms of deformation locations and magnitudes. All five shale gas wells resumed normal production after being temporarily plugged during the period of mine-by. This study provides a successful demonstration of the effectiveness of a casing cementing alternative for decoupling production and intermediate casing, and thus minimizing the influence of longwall mining in the shale gas wells drilled through longwall chain pillars.

INTRODUCTION From the first historical records of the discovery of uranium as an element and the attempted classification of its minerals in the early 18th century-through its first uses in pigmentation and the coloring of glasses and ceramic glazes-until 1939 when it was discovered that the isotope U235, was fissionable, uranium oxide in the form of pitchblende ores and concentrates (produced mainly in Bohemia, Canada, and the former Belgian Congo) in recent times was the source of uranium compounds incidental as byproducts to the recovery of radium from this invariable associated source. In 1938 this byproduct production from pitchblende concentrates was about 471 st of U3O8, with over 90% from Canada and the Belgian Congo and only 25.85 st from carnotite ores in the United States.1 Under the impetus of the Atomic Energy Commission&apos;s (AEC now part of the Energy Research Development Administration) domestic and foreign production incentives and buying programs, and as an initial assurance of atomic armament capability of the United States and the Free World, the growth of the uranium mining and milling industry burgeoned from 1952 to 1962. After a short period of decline, in the second decade and in large commitments beyond, it has again extended its capacity to meet ever-increasing fuel demands of atomic power generation by the electric utilities industry. In 1961 the peak production in the United States alone was 17,758 st of U3O8. Peak aggregate domestic and foreign deliveries of 34,581 st of U3O8 to the AEC occurred in 1960.z Canada&apos;s maximum delivery of 13,506 st of U308 was made in 1959. These peak and continued productions in the Free World are largely from: the Mesozoic (Jurassic) and Tertiary (Eocene) sandstones in the United States; the quartz pebble conglomerates of Canada and the Witwatersrand; pegmatites, Jurassic limestones, and Precambrian complexes, with less but significant production; the phosphoria, where byproduct production is minor. This uranium production in the form of precipitated concentrates has come from the milling of ores from these sources, both directly and by retreatment of gold cyanidation tailings on the Witwatersrand. Milling of crude ore has followed these processes: conventional crushing and size preparation, ore drying when required, salt roasting for high vanadium ores and byproduct vanadium recovery, carbonate or acid-leaching processes, classification sand-dine separations or countercurrent decantation (CCD) circuits and complete liquid-solids separations, resin-in-pulp (RIP) or liquid-liquid (solvent) ion-ex- change extractions, clarification of pregnant liquors, precipitation, filtration and washing, sodium and vanadium removals, and drying or roasting and packaging of the high-grade, high-purity uranium concentrate commonly referred to as "yellowcake." Coupled with the hazards and control of dust generation incident to conventional crushing and milling operations, more stringent control of airborne respirable and ingestible radioactive particulates and the protection of personnel against definitive external radiation are inherent to uranium milling. Impoundment and control of tailings and other effluents of uranium milling are more restrictive than in conventional practice, be- cause long-term disposal and containment of the uranium series of radionuclides, whether in solution or in solid form, are requisite to uranium milling and are made manadatory under regulatory agencies of government. 2. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY OF URANIUM Early Uses and Byproduct Production of Uranium Uranium was discovered by Klaproth in 1789 but had little commercial importance until the discovery of uranium fission by Hahn and Strassman at the close of 1938. The well-known uranium ores of Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, the Congo, and the Colorado Plateau were early sources of radium. Minor quantities of uranium were used for small-scale technical and industrial applications, particularly in coloring glass and ceramics, but most of the uranium was discarded. The Colorado ores were also mined later, chiefly for vanadium. Impetus of Armament Capability and Fuel Demands for Atomic Power Following the discovery of atomic fission, uranium became critically important for military applications and, more recently, as a nuclear fuel. Prior to 1966 uranium was acquired in the United States almost solely for use in the weapons program of the AEC. By 1970 the AEC had procured approximately 325,000 st of U3O8 from domestic and foreign sources. Current and future marketability is primarily dependent upon commercial demand for reactor fuel. Iron, cobalt, and nickel in waste ferric chloride solutions were separated from each other by solvent extraction. The iron was extracted from the cobalt and nickel by the use of methyl isobutyl ketone, and then the cobalt was separated from the nickel by the use of a high-molecular-weight quaternary amine dissolved in a solvent of high aromatic content.

Though the use of continuous mining machines consolidated the operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading in one machine that would theoretically provide uninterrupted production, it was soon realized that the face haulage and roof support operations remained as major impediments to continuous production. The ability to provide not only continuous cutting and loading, but also continuous haulage and roof support (see Fig. I), was the basis for the introduction of mechanized longwall systems in this country from Europe in 1951. The early systems employed friction props for roof support, but were to become obsolete shortly after introduction of the first hydraulically powered, self-advancing supports in 1960. Since then, use of the longwall technique has grown to the point where it is currently providing more than 5% of the annual output of underground coal mines in the United States. The shortwall system had its origin in Australia, but was first introduced into this country in 1962 following the development of powered roof supports. It, too, provides for continuous cutting, loading, and roof support (see Fig. 2), but has not experienced the widespread popularity of longwall due to its inherent inability to easily provide for continuous haulage. While there are in the neighborhood of 100 longwall systems currently in operation in this country, there are only a handful of short- wall operations providing production of slightly more than 907 184.7 t/a (1,000,000 stpy) Both of these systems provide uninterrupted roof support for face operations by means of hydraulically powered steel roof supports. In each case, the coal removal consists of open-end cuts made from the narrow end of a large rectangular pillar (panel) which has been blocked out by continuous miners developing entries around its perimeter. However, this is the extent of the similarities between the two systems. It is hoped [ ] that the information presented in this chapter will enable the reader to better understand the two mechanical systems and the mining concepts involved in their employment.

The solvent extraction of vanadium (V) from Na2CO3–NaHCO3 solution was attempted using Aliquat-336 (methyltrioctylammonium chloride) extractant dissolved in sulfonated kerosene as diluent with 2-octanol as phase modifier. The influence factors, such as Na2CO3 concentration, NaHCO3 concentration, temperature, extractant concentration and impurity P, on vanadiumextraction were investigated. The results revealed that the single stage extraction efficiency of vanadium reached above 89%from 20 g/L Na2CO3 – 20 g/L NaHCO3 solution under the following conditions: extractant concentration of 15%, room temperature of 20–30 °C, 2-octanol of 6%, phase ratio (O/A) of 1:1, and oscillation time of 1 min. The addition of NaHCO3 into Na2CO3 solution could lower the pH value of the Na2CO3 solution, improve extraction efficiency of vanadium, and not introduce other impurities. The phosphate anion did not interact with the vanadate anion in the Na2CO3–NaHCO3 solution. The P in the Na2CO3–NaHCO3 solution had little influence on vanadium extraction.
