The paper industry is an $80 billion/year business that is the largest consumer of industrial minerals. Paper industry generally refers to paper and paperboard products, including pulp mills. Grades and uses of paper and paperboard are very diverse, including such things as napkins, paper plates, corrugated boxes, magazines, newsprint, currency, and copier paper. Only about 40% of paper utilizes industrial minerals as fillers or coating materials. Minerals are used for both functional and economic reasons. Most often, minerals such as kaolin clay and calcium carbonate are used to improve print quality, brightness and opacity of paper. The minerals can be added as fillers into the paper in the wet end of the papermaking system, or can be applied as part of a coating to the paper. Coated papers are the highest quality paper, being used for magazines, advertising brochures and annual reports. Common uses for filled uncoated paper are books, copier paper, envelopes and many of the Sunday newspaper advertising inserts.

There are three definite steps in the making of a mining industry in any country. These are as follows: Step A - Geological Mapping This step covers the basic geological mapping of the country at scales of 1/250, 000 up to l/50, 000. This step eliminates territory and directs the exploration teams to the areas of potential interest. Step B Prospecting This step includes all phases from detailed geology through geophysics and drilling up to the point of proving that an economic ore body exists. Step C - Mine Development This is the expensive step, involving the creation of the mine, including shaft-sinking, ore treatment plant, etc.

Twenty-five years ago, when I began my sales life marketing minerals, there was little or no contact between sales people and production people. In those days, it was not uncommon for me, as a salesman, to learn of production problems existing in my company from my customers. Today, in my opinion, any successful mining company must keep production people fully aware of circumstances that effect service to the users of the product. Basically, feldspar is presently consumed by the glass and pottery industries the same as 100 years ago. The consuming public little realizes the origin of so many things they use daily and take for granted. Feldspar is utilized in the glass that contains our Coca-Cola, Pepsi, wines, liqueurs, beer and the assorted gob¬lets from which we drink these lovely brews, the industrial glass upon which all industry depends, the bathroom plumbing fixtures that make life so different from the days of the out-house, the beautiful and durable china we enjoy at mealtime. The electricity we use requires insulators that demand feldspar. In our home ap¬pliances, automobiles, toys and airplanes, we find feldspar. I could go on and on, hopefully soliciting your help in making our taxpaying and non-taxpaying fellow man aware of the burdens he may acquire when unthinking, over-enthusiastic environmentalists foist unnecessary hardships upon the mining industry. Feldspar is marketed primarily sized from 20 mesh to 325 mesh. The glass industry requires feldspar ground 20 mesh to 40 mesh size; the pottery industry requires material from 150 mesh to 325 mesh size. One large glass plant may require up to 100 tons per day and more, whereas a small plant may use less than 5 tons per year. Introduction The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy and the Institution of Mining Engineers organized the Third International Mine Ventilation Congress held in Harrogate, England. Sixty-one papers were presented and about 300 participants registered. About 30% of the participants came from Great Britain, 20% from South Africa, and about 5% each came from Australia, Canada, China, France, US, and West Germany. The remainder of the participants came from 18 other countries. Eleven of the papers presented dealt with methane, three with diesel exhausts, four with dust, four with radioactivity, 18 with heat, and 15 dealt with main and auxiliary ventilation. Six of the papers dealt with mine fires, which is a boundary region between main ventilation and gas concerns. Ventilation Congress proceedings are available. See ME, December 1984, page 1687, New Books page. With CH4 and radioactivity topics, the Australians dominated since they are becoming large coal and uranium producers. With diesel exhausts, the most important problem in highly mechanized mines, the North Americans were prominent. The South Africans, working in 90% SiO2 in their gold deposits, were preeminent in presentations on dust. They also led in topics related to heat, joined by the West Germans whose mines are getting deeper. In main and auxiliary ventilation, Great Britain and West Germany provided the majority of contributions. Methane The large number of methods for the precalculation of CH4 liberation in longwall mining all contain three elements: gas content of the coal, gas emitting zone (or influence zone of face), and degree of gas emission. Determination of the gas content, commonly accomplished by taking coal samples, does not pose much difficulty. But this is not the case with the other two factors. Most existing approaches rely on rock mechanics observations. Some only rely on intuition or speculation. The West German coal mines conducted a large research project between 1977 and 1982, in which gas pressures around longwall faces were measured. Gas pressures and gas contents can be related. Therefore, influence zone and degree of gas emission can be determined simultaneously. The precalculation of CH4 liberation in room-and-pillar mining is simpler. Since foot and hanging walls remain essentially intact, gas pressure distribution and gas flow can be calculated using hydraulics equations. A key to these calculations is permeability. A group of Australian researchers reported that the permeabilities of rock under three dimensional stress differs from rock under destressed conditions. This fact was known, but no systematic observations existed. These were provided. Methane drainage has been practiced for more than 40 years. It is used with great success in longwall operations. Some of the West Germans think that methane drainage from the footwall is neglected. Under certain geological conditions, they claim this is as important as drainage from the hanging wall. A research project was presented in support of this claim. Considerable efforts have existed for more than 10 years to use methane drainage in room-and-pillar mining. A paper described the accomplishments of Consolidation Coal Co. Since coal and rock are not fractured as much as in longwall mining, gas transport takes place by the slow diffusion from micropores into the cleats. Then, it is transported by laminar flow along the cleats until a drainage borehole or the mine workings are reached. Boreholes about 300 m (1000 ft) long can reduce the gas content of a band of coal 100-m (330-ft) wide by 50% in one year. A paper from India described methane drainage from gob areas. A French paper reported that especially high methane concentrations can be drained from gob areas if the face ventilation is descensional. Methane buoyancy and ventilating pressures compensate each other, and little air dilution by leakage takes place. Another French paper described a newly developed gas and air velocity monitoring system making use of a microcomputer. Four papers on methane dealt with gas outbursts. Two Australian contributions described the problems encountered with CH,-CO2 mixtures and the attempts to solve them with drainage boreholes having 10 to 20-kPa (1.5 to 3-psi) suction pressures. A Hungarian paper described problems and attempts to reduce the risks of gas outbursts in Hungary. Prediction of gas outbursts in coal seams was the focus of an English paper. Automation and mechanization in mining has no value of its own. It has to be measured in economic terms or in Increased safety or in the utilization of deposits which otherwise were unavailable. The mechanization and automation of workphases in the mining and rock construction process has led to the decrease of manual work. This has had a very essential importance in the countries where the labor is expensive or where there has been difficulties in the availability of labor. The work has become much more efficient. We would like to argue that the need of mechanization has been initiated mostly from the above mentioned reasons. The origin has seldom been the "process" approach or the real need or will to change the way mining is done. Through mechanization bigger unit sizes of machines and operations have become possible and better efficiency is achieved. This has led to new problems as well, but in most cases they have been solved so that better and more economic outcome than before has been the end result. The changes have thus been justified. It is perhaps feasible to state already at this stage that we see that the mechanization andautomation steps in the difficult conditions of mining have been remarkable. There is not a slightest underestimation of the achievements and importance of this development in our mind. Where we are to- day is the result of the experience, know-how and technological excellency of all the parties involved. The natural approach to automation has been through mechanization and automation of individual unit operations and machines. This has been the way as well in manufacturing industry as in mining. There may not have been any other way. The other presentations in this session tell us very clearly of the approach .which the machine manufacturers have taken. They have not done it alone but 'most of the initiatives have come from them. A good use of their present achievements gives many possibilities to increase the, efficiency in mining. We would, however, like to extend the view one step further to the future:

A computer-oriented systems simulator (CMHS) has been developed for analysis of continuous materials handling systems. Special emphasis has been placed in the model on several features which are unique to these systems. These features include periodic pattern of material arrival from several sources, several types of material to be transferred, material dispatch processes, intermediate storage capacities, and multiple material destinations. Both the deterministic factors of the continuous material handling system such as the physical decomposition of the system and the scheme and schedule of its operation and the stochastic factors such as variations of material arrival, material pattern on the conveyor, and avail-abilities of the system elements are considered in the simulator.

The valuation of known mineral re-serves entails the economic evaluation of the mining enterprise and the valuation of other assets employed, including mining and processing plant and intangible assets. A case study approach analyzes two reserve situations: ownership of reserves (phosphate rock), and leasing of reserve lands (kaolin). The appraisal of the physical property is outlined, along with the economic analysis of the operation. The discounted net cash flow approach is used to value the enterprise, leading to value of the reserves after correlation with other assets employed.

The 71st Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Section of SME and the 59th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held jointly April 14-16, 1998, in Duluth, MN. Registration was estimated at 450 people, about the same as last year's attendance. A short course on mine productivity and a trade show that included about 75 exhibitors were also held in conjunction with the SME meeting. This year's theme was "Iron ore and integrated steel - where are we going?" Although generally optimistic in the near term, the general feeling among the attendees is that the industry faces serious competitive challenges. The iron mining industry in Minnesota experienced a tremendous rebound from the devastating downturn of the 1980s. Today, however, all seven of Minnesota's taconite plants are operating at full capacity. And these high production levels are expected to continue during the next several years. Longer-term, however, Minnesota's producers face an increasingly competitive worldwide market, including stiff competition from Canadian operations. Because of the increasing competition, industry representatives in Minnesota believe that it is critical to strengthen their operations. To accomplish this, companies are looking to: ? Further reduce production costs. ? Bring new technologies into their operations. ? Develop value-added facilities such as direct-reduced iron. ? Expand their markets. The industry is also seeking more collaboration between industry and government. The National Steel Pellet Co. and Minntac are looking at using ported kilns, which would reduce energy consumption significantly. Cleveland Cliffs, EVTAC, Northshore Mining and Minnesota Iron and Steel are all looking at building value-added plants. One such project that received attention among the attendees was Minnesota Iron and Steel's proposed $1.2 billion combined mine, taconite plant, direct reduced iron facility and steel production facility. If the operation is built, it would produce about 3.4 Mt/a (3.39 million ltpy) of direct-reduced iron pellets. Financing is pending. An announcement is expected in the fall of 1998. The pellets, containing 70% iron, would be processed into steel in electric arc furnaces. The steel produced would then be processed into hot-rolled coil, which is used by the appliance and automobile industries. The keynote addresses and technical sessions focused on these issues as well as on environmental issues.

The modern era of mineral exploration in Panama began in the late 1960's, resulting in porphyry copper discoveries at Petaquilla, Rio Pito, and Cerro Colorado. In contrast, Panama's early mining history (1503 to the early 1700's) was associated with gold. A single mine, Cana, in Darien Province, produced more than one Million ounces of gold in the colonial period. Except for episodic exploration activity by British and French interests, Panama's gold potential since the 1700's has been largely ignored.

"Design of effective mine water treatment plants depends on the ability to reliably predict treatment outcomes, but systems with multiple chemical and physical treatment processes and recycle loops can be difficult to model. GoldPHREEQC is a modeling framework that integrates mass and flow routing capabilities of GoldSim software and water quality calculations provided by PHREEQC, and is well-suited to modeling parameters of interest in the mining industry, especially metals and sulfate. Physical processes such as membrane separation and greensand filtration are modeled by defining mass rejections for each parameter and flow routing based on vendor projections and bench- or pilot-scale equipment testing. GoldPHREEQC models chemical precipitation processes such as HDS metals removal and gypsum precipitation by (1) performing surface-aging and solubility calculations in PHREEQC and (2) using the GoldSim framework to direct supernatant and precipitate to subsequent process steps. Users can apply this modeling framework to predict effluent water quality, chemical requirements, sludge production, and required equipment capacity to support design, troubleshooting, and cost estimating. FMC's Paradise Peak Mine was discovered in July 1983. The deposit at discovery contained 11,340 ,000 tonnes (12,500,000 tons) of ore grading 3.71 glt (0.108 oz/ton) Au and 120 glt (3.5 oz/ton) Ag. A feasibility study was completed by Davy McKee in May 1984, with detailed engineering starting in June 1984. Construction of the facility started on January 2, 1985 with plant start-up taking place on April 14, 1986, two and one half months ahead of schedule and more than 10% under budget. This paper describes the status of the operation approximately 1-1/2 years after start-up including revisions and additions to equipment and process.

An investigation an4 analysis of slip/fall accidents specifically pertaining to underground coal mines was conducted. From a population of 751 accident reports, three major sources of injury which account for over 80% of the incidents have been identified. The specifics of this study are presented in this paper. Based on the results, several recommendations are made to reduce such accidents in underground mines. In addition, a brief discussion of the slip-hazard analysis laboratory at the University of Utah, which will be useful in future analyses of these accidents is presented. Work in this facility includes the simulation of certain mining activities in a controlled setting. Foot forces are measured and work methods subsequently developed to minimize the slip potential of these activities.

The folded Appalachians are a physiographic province of eastern North America extending from Nova Scotia to Alabama. The province strikes through the state of Pennsylvania (see Fig. 1) comprising roughly 20 percent of the state and it is here that the focus of this paper will attend. The province is a thick sedimentary sequence which was compressed into a folded mountain belt by the Appalachian Orogeny which terminated at the end of the Permian. The stratigraphy contains both carbonate and non-carbonate rocks as a reflection of the depositional environment at any specific time and place during the Paleozoic geosynclinal accumulation. Although a great deal of variety and difference exists in the geology from one end to another, a common thread of structural and stratigraphic style exists. Carbonate rocks, limestones and dolomites, comprise a substantial percentage of the total Appalachian stratigraphy and are interbedded with clastic materials such as sandstones, siltstones, and shales. The carbonate rocks are extensively mined and collectively represent a vast economic resource.

"INTRODUCTION A positive workplace environmental, health, and safety (EHS) culture affords organizations and corporations many benefits, including increased trust and employee morale, sustainable EHS performance improvements, and reliable productivity and profit margin growth. Unfortunately, many leaders and EHS professionals struggle daily to achieve and maintain positive workplace cultures and consistent business results. While lack of management support, corporate or employee buy-in, resources, and time are common factors that conflict with an EHS culture and safe work behaviors and processes, there are many other actions that threaten the positive attributes of an organization’s culture. Often these culture killers are not recognized, or worse yet, ignored because they are considered taboo. For example, voicing observations or questioning long-held management practices or process that were initially designed to promote EHS values, but no longer do so. Unfortunately, this could be viewed as challenging authority, not being a team player or even not valuing EHS. And for those that speak up, the potential for negative consequences can be real impediments to positive change. Having an open mind, constantly striving to identify culture killers, and putting forth the effort to eliminate them are the first steps to begin reaping the benefits of having a sound workplace culture. This paper helps readers to: • Recognize culture killers that negatively impact fostering and maintaining sustainable EHS cultures in the workplace. • Understand how to prevent, avoid, and respond to culture killers, before they wreak havoc in your organization. • Assess EHS culture strength, and implement plans to continuously improve it. The desire to draw boundaries around concepts, put things into boxes, and nail down requirements for something that is virtually impossible to solidify for any length of time is quite fascinating! These desires can pose challenges when trying to define what the perfect EHS culture should look like. The very act of trying to define our culture tends to create silos, and these silos, in turn, can become “culture killers”. The following is one of the most common culture killers. UNBALANCED ORGANIZATIONS TRIGGER CULTURE KILLERS Unbalanced organizations occur when an organization’s constantly shifting focus forces other important needs to take a back seat--until the focus changes again. This balancing act can be detrimental and lead to catastrophic results including low morale, lack of trust, employee dissatisfaction, high turnover, increased incidents, poor profit margins, loss of market share, and ultimately into organization-wide failure."

The process of froth flotation as a means of upgrading the quality of coal by removing ash/pyrite and of separating selected mineral(s) from undesired gangue materials is certainly one of the most common unit engineering operations in use today. Flotation has been successfully practiced at the industrial scale for well over 50 years, and if anything, its use is increasing due to the ever decreasing feed grades of the coals and minerals being processed. Flotation, as a process, has also shown itself to be an extremely flexible process that lends itself well to a wide variety of solid/solid separations. Thus separations can involve very different particle sizes, particle densities, relative weight ratios of materials to be separated, etc., with surprisingly little modification in equipment and operating philosophy required.

For the past five years, Small Mine Development has been involved in the development of small grade underground projects. These projects have been in tough environments where solutions have been found by placing emphasis on creative collaborations by small work forces and selected specialists. This has created an environment where constant innovation and change have become standard operating practice. The cornerstones of these efficient operations have been formed using pneumatic backfill, creative shotcreting, specialized equipment, and highly motivated people. The results realized have served to turn interesting properties into productive operations.

The concept of sub-aerial tailings deposit.ion using a managed rotational deposition system to form a deposit of partly-saturated tails for North American conditions was introduced by Knight and described by Knight and Haile (1983). The application of the sub-aerial technique, together with continuous removal of all surface waters and underdrainage outflows from the Key Lake uranium mine I s tailing storage facility in Northern Saskatchewan, Canada, has been documented by Knight and Haile (1984). Since then, the concept is being applied in the United States to tailings facilities in California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Idaho and South Dakota.

A belt drive attendant was working underground during his shift at the junction of two belt drives. He worked alone, but communicated with others at the mine by underground phone. At noon his shift foreman stopped by his workstation. At 2:00 p.m. he was contacted by phone by a fellow belt drive attendant. At 5:00 p.m., he was found dead by the oncoming evening shifter.

The Newmont Boddington Orebody (NBO) is a large, diffuse Au/Cu orebody in Western Australias South-West corner with approximately 20Moz Au in current Reserves. The current sulphide Resource is reported after calculation with the non-linear estimation technique Uniform Conditioning to account for the mining selectivity being smaller than the average drillhole spacing. Simulation of Au grade is also run over the entire orebody reviewing risk and uncertainty. There are differences in results from the two methods. These have been investigated and the lessons learned of the influencing parameters and effect of technique alone, are helpful for applications to other orebodies.

The first form of a surety bond was an honest handshake between two or more parties, agreeing to a decision and their personal guarantee of following through to completion. This has all changed. In 1895, the United States Treasury Department disclosed that $35 million worth of personal surety guarantees on file had become worthless. At that time, a law was passed, requiring all surety bonds, in favor of the United States, must be corporate surety bonds. Today, a surety bond is one of the nation's leading financial instruments used to guarantee the completion of an obligation.
