Perhaps no other mineral commodities in this volume have as many uses as limestone and dolomite. These carbonate rocks are the basic building blocks of the construction industry, the material from which aggregate, cement, lime, and building stone are made. Carbonate rocks, and their derived products, are used as aggregates, fluxes, glass raw material, refractories, fillers, reactive agents in sulfur-oxide removal, abrasives, soil conditioners, ingredients in a host of chemical processes, and much more. Although the use of limestone and dolomite goes back before recorded history, new uses and products are continually being found. Carbonate rocks form about 15% of the earth's sedimentary crust and are widely available for exploitation. Found extensively on all continents, they are quarried and mined from formations that range in age from Precambrian to Holocene. Reserves of carbonate rock are large and will last indefinitely, although high-purity deposits may be absent or have limited availability in certain areas. Limestone and dolomite are so useful and so abundant that in 1989 about 798 Mt were produced in the United States. In fact, about 75% of all stone quarried or mined in the United States was carbonate rock. Sand and gravel was the only mineral commodity produced in greater quantity. In this chapter we have sought to provide the general reader an overview of carbonate rocks, their composition, distribution, production, and uses. The literature on the limestone and dolomite resources of the United States and Canada is so vast and diverse that one can easily become mired in print. We tried to list those references that are easily accessible and that provide the economic geologist with a starting point for more intensive study. The table listing selected references on limestone and dolomite resources in Canada and the United States reflects our attempt to be selective rather than exhaustive and to direct the reader to the best sources of detailed information.

"The north segment of the Zizhi Tunnel that consists of twin tunnels was excavated at a shallow depth in soft ground using the Shallow Tunneling Method. Based on continuous field measurements, the development histories of surface settlement were analyzed first. The observed development process could be roughly divided into three stages and the influence of river was evidenced. Transverse and longitudinal surface settlements above the twin tunnels were then fitted with empirical models. The obtained trough width parameters in transverse and longitudinal direction (it and il) and the volume loss (VLs) were presented and discussed. Additionally, surface settlement was compared with the crown settlement. The relationship between surface and crown settlement behaved in two different ways inside and outside the river-affected region. The findings in this project give references for predicting surface settlements in similar tunneling condition. INTRODUCTION Nowadays tunnel construction has become a major way of utilizing underground space in many large cities. The ground deformation will be inevitably induced in the tunneling process. Engineers should always be careful about excessive deformation that may damage adjacent structures. For shallow tunnels, controlling ground deformation turns to be more risky. Since soil arching is not completely formed in the shallow tunneling, settlements can easily develop from tunnel crown to ground surface.A conventional tunneling method named Shallow Tunneling Method (STM) has been developed and widely applied to constructed shallow tunnels in China. The major difference between this method and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is whether considering self-supporting capacity of surrounding ground or not. In order to reduce the disturbance of surrounding soils, several guidelines are highlighted in this method, including advanced pipe forepoles, strict grouting, short excavation length, strong support, quick closure and frequent measurements (Fang 2012). Nevertheless, the ground deformation is still hard to control and becomes a concerned problem, mainly because ground settlement has some regional features and largely depends on the detailed excavation methods (bench cut method, multiple heading method, etc.) and ground condition (sand, clay, decomposed rock, etc.)."

The process engineer is frequently requested to select equipment to separate brine from solids, In many cases, this is a more difficult task than the selection of most other pieces of process equipment because quite often the operation of the various types of debrining equipment cannot be predicted by calculations, One must rely to a great extent upon experience or empirical test work to predict performance - that is to say one must use a practical rather than a theoretical approach. This is not to say that the solutions to liquid-solids separating problems are wholly an art but rather it is to emphasize that the approach demands a fair knowledge of commercially available liquid-solids separating equipment, some background on the advantages and limitations of each type and in many cases might necessitate a fair amount of test work, or at least, a study of performance of equipment on similar applications.

A Mineração da Trindade (Samitri) is a major Brazilian iron ore producer. Founded in 1939, privately owned Samitri operates six mines with a total production capacity of 14.5 Mt/a (16 million stpy). The mines are located in southeastern Brazil in the state of Minas Gerais. They are operating in the iron ore quadrangle, Brazil's primary iron ore-producing region. In addition to iron ore production, Samitri has the capability to produce 350 kt/a (386,000 stpy) of ferruginous manganese ore from two mines, also located in the iron ore quadrangle. Historically, about 70% of Samitri's production of lump ore, sinter feed and pellet feed is exported. Destinations include Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Trinidad and Tobago, China, Turkey and the United States. Alegria Mine In September 1989, Samitri started a new processing plant to treat itabirite, a low-grade iron ore. The goal of the plant was to produce sinter feed (coarse fraction) and pellet feed (fine fraction). Primary separation of sinter feed from pellet feed was accomplished with conventional vibrating screens making a 0.4-mm (40-mesh) cut. The screen oversize was stockpiled as sinter feed. The undersize was deslimed with hydrocyclones and upgraded by conventional froth flotation. Resulting pellet feed grades ranged from 3% to 3.5% Si02. A change in pellet feed requirements by Samarco Mineração SA, a Samitri subsidiary, called for Si02 levels below 1 % and increased production levels. Moreover, market demands called for a change in sinter feed size distributions. Unfortunately, lower pellet feed Si02 levels could not be achieved with the existing process. This was because of the presence of 35% +0.15 mm (+100 mesh) in flotation feed. Flowsheet development. Laboratory and pilot-plant studies conducted at Samitri's research facility found that to achieve lower Si02 levels, the +0.15 mm (+100 mesh) in flotation feed must be kept below 5% to 10%.

Introduction Bulk commodity prices are ever increasing. This forces buyers and sellers in world markets to look more carefully at methods for obtaining an accurate accounting of commodity transactions in commerce and materials utilization in processes. Weighing and sampling inaccuracies can result in loss of income, product quality, and cost controls. So weighing and sampling accuracies are extremely important. They are the key components of managing the quantity and quality control aspects of bulk materials handling. This article will confine itself to the weighing systems and will deal with various aspects of system design, calibration, and operations. Emphasis will be placed on new developments and requirements in this field. Weighing methods To measure the gravimetric pull on a body being weighed (the load), the gravimetric force must be countered by an opposing force. Measuring this counter-balancing force thus becomes the measurement of weight. The conventional even-arm balance shows the concept of balancing an unknown mass with an equal known counterbalancing mass. But the loads encountered in industry generally range up to many thousands of pounds. So it is obvious that the even-arm approach is not practical. Thus, with the exception of direct load-bearing load cells, most of the weighing equipment uses some form of lever system. This is usually a combination of first- and second-class levers, to gain a mechanical advantage. These levers permit the load force to be counter-balanced and hence measured within a practical range. Lever systems not only perform this force-reducing action, they also serve to focus the load force at a single point, for convenient measurement. They align the force vertically in one direction so that measurement accuracy will not be affected by unrelated side forces. There are five basic methods of gravimetric weight measurements. That is, there are five basic types of opposing forces. • The first is the standard weight counterbalance. It uses a known weight to counterbalance the load directly or through a lever system.

Introduction There continues to be a large economic opportunity associated with improving process performance through advanced process control systems within the minerals industry. The basis for this opportunity lies in the inherently low efficiencies of many of the unit operations found in mineral processing plants as well as the continual variation that is present in the ores being processed. The ageless target of such control systems is improved recoveries and concentrate grades, higher processing rates and lower unit costs. Many plants are enjoying the benefits of modem, well functioning process control systems but few if any have achieved plant-wide optimization in an economical sense. As new process modeling and control technologies, such as neural networks, continue to evolve and develop, the potential for plant- wide optimization is becoming a closer reality. Neural network technology appears to have a significant potential in the general field of process control and control of mineral processing operations. Neural networks are an emerging technology that have been evolving out of the study of biological systems since the early 1940's. The first software simulation of neural computing networks was reported in 1956 by Nathanial Rochester of IBM Research during the first conference on artificial intelligence which was sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation. Neural Networks Neural networks can be considered to be a class of computer program that perform their problem solving functions based on a rudimentary model of the human brain and how it solves problems. Traditional computer programs and even computers themselves solve problems or process data sequentially and in a deterministic manner. The human brain, on the other hand, processes data and solves problems in a massively parallel fashion. We think of computers normally in terms of having a single processing unit, sometimes a co-processor to assist in certain activities such as mathematical functions or communications, bytes of memory, processing speed and program/data storage size.

The subjects to be examined in my portion of the session entitled "Technology of Aluminum.. Recovery" will be twofold. 1. Economics of the basic aluminum economy--supply-demand-price. 2. Specifications of aluminum products produced from municipal waste--from the secondary aluminum standpoint. It is the object of this speech to first impress everyone with the excellent long-run markets for the aluminum products from municipal waste and then to acquaint everyone with the rather liberal scrap specifications that the recycling industry can tolerate. The most important statement that can be made about the recycling of aluminum is that it is now and will be an economic necessity. This is true far many reasons; one which hit the headlines recently was Interior Secretary Rogers Morton's statement "Third-world nations could use mineral wealth not to achieve political ends but to jack up economic positions. The result could be sky-rocketing prices and dwindling supplies on world markets." There is no reason why the group of countries that supplies most of our bauxite can't get together the way oil-producing countries got together on the price of oil. (Jamaica and Surinam, are original sources of two-thirds of the aluminum used in the United States.) The worry is not so much that we will end up without the basic raw material but rather that the price might be so high that we could not afford it. So much for the blackmail reason for recycling aluminum; the supply and demand picture in both the primary and recycling sectors of the aluminum economy is far more meaningful.

The McKinley Mine is located in the northwest New Mexico, in McKinley County, approximately 25 miles from Gallup. The mine is operated by The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. (P&M), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Chevron Corporation. P&M is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado. Since the McKinley Mine began operations in 1962 a total of 83,391,000 metric tons of coal have been sold through 1990. The 1991 production was approximately 5.000.000 metric tons. The mine operations are contained on a 109.000 square kilometers lease area of which 44.000 square kilometers are on the Navajo Nation. The present customer base consists of four utilities and one industrial account, all of which are located in Arizona. The utility customers are the Arizona Public Service Co. Cholla Station at Joseph City, The Salt River Project. Coronado Generating Station near Joseph City, and The Tucson Electric Company, Irvington Generating Station in Tucson. The industrial customer is the Stone Container Corporation, Snowflake Paper Mill.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines develops technology to help ensure that the Nation has an adequate and dependable. supply of minerals at reasonable economic, human, and environmental cost. Our research programs seek improvements for almost every aspect of the mineral production cycle--from evaluating the availability of minerals, removing the ore from the earth, to enhancing the performance of mineral materials. The health and safety of the men and women who work in the Nation's mines and minerals processing plants and the environmental impact of mining and mineral processing are major Bureau research concerns. In recent years, the U.S. mineral industry has found it increasingly difficult to compete for a share of world markets. Many foreign producers benefit from lower production costs and higher grade deposits. Some foreign governments subsidize their mineral industries and impose fewer restrictions with respect to environmental controls and health and safety regulations. If the United States is to compete in world mineral markets, innovative technology must be found to lower the cost of recovering and processing minerals. Mining and mineral processing research by the Bureau identifies ways to help the country maintain a sound, competitive industry and a dependable mineral supply, so vital to economic growth and the national security. This work includes efforts to improve existing techniques and procedures; but more and more of the Bureau's resources are being focused on long-term, high-risk research directed at developing new approaches to mining and mineral activities--approaches like in situ mining. Bureau scientists are studying the mining applications of computer assisted mining and investigating a variety of "high tech" approaches to extractive metallurgy. Such cutting-edge research will be necessary if major advances in health and safety, environmental quality, strategic and critical minerals availability, and overall U.S. competitiveness are to be achieved. It is just such high-risk research that the industry cannot afford to conduct itself, but--in the long run--cannot afford to be without. It is this type of research that will help us arrive at a revolutionary breakthrough rather than small incremental changes in health and safety technology as well as recovery methods. Our mining and mineral processing research is also directed at reducing the Nation's dependence on imports of minerals that have key defense and industrial uses. Some of these strategic and critical minerals are particularly vulnerable to supply disruptions. We are working on technologies that would allow the United States to take advantage of domestic sources of these minerals--sources consisting primarily of deep or low-grade ores, ores with complex mineralogy we do not yet know how to process, and small deposits that are now uneconomical to mine and process. Other research activities focus on ways to reduce the Nation"s consumption of key minerals and increase the recycling of these minerals. The opportunities in this area include coal. The current middle eastern crisis reinforces the need for a stable energy supply--preferably a domestic supply. The extensive reserves of coal in this country are well documented. Perhaps what is not as well recognized is the impact that the price of coal can have on its competitive position both for domestic fuel selection considerations as well as for the ability of this country to compete in the coal export market. Today, the role to the United States is as a reliable, but high-cost exporter of high-quality coal. U.S. export coal competes with supplies from other major suppliers, including Australia, Canada, Poland. If U.S. mining costs were lowered by at least $8 per ton in the year 2000, then coal exports would surge by a projected 46 percent, and U.S steam coal displaces significant quantities of foreign coal imports in Europe. Two porphyry copper orebodies, the North and Central MM orebodies, have been found through regional and structural geologic works, about 5 Km south of Chuquicamata, under a gravel bed of approximately 100 m and in the west side of the West Fissure. The mineralization is emplaced in a coarse granodioritic porphyry, predominantly with sericitic alteration. In the North MM ore-body, with 200 million metric tons of 1.0% Cu, the mineralization is mainly chalcopyrite, bornite, digenite and molibdenite. In the central MM orebody, with 700 million metric tons of 1.3% Cu, there are large veins of enargite, chalcocite and bornite, the last one increasing in depth, separated by chalcopyrite and pyrite zones; in these veins there are interesting gold and silver values. Both orebodies have an upper enrichment of chalcocite and covellite, with pyrite envelope. According with these characteristics, the MM orebodies could he the upper part, with sericitic alteration, of the Chuquicamata porphyry copper system, displaced by the West Fissure system movements, but we couldn't eliminate the possibility that MM can be a new orebody, different of Chuquicamata.

A petrographic approach to studying the organic matter in ore deposits is advantageous in that direct observation of sample heterogeneity can be made, organic constituents (macerals) can be identified, and valuable information about the geological history of the sample (such as thermal history, oxidation, and reworking) can be obtained. Thermally immature bitumens are compositionally and structurally heterogeneous, and optically isotropic. The end product of thermal alteration, graphite, is compositionally and structurally homogeneous, and optically an isotropic. One route by which thermally immature bitumens can approach the graphite structure Is by an aromatic intermediate phase, termed mesophase. The development of optical anisotropy and a thermal mesophase has been observed In several high temperature deposits. Textures in bitumens are described from the thermally-altered Mississippi Valley-Type deposit at Nanisivik (Northwest Territories), the silver-vein deposit at Kongsberg (Norway), and the gold deposit at Carlin (Nevada). Textural evidence for multiple generations of bitumens, supportive of a pulsing model for incoming brines, is shown. Petrological evidence for the introduction of bitumens as an immiscible phase or possibly as micelles is shown in the Carlin and Kongsberg deposits.

An understanding of the Florida Phosphate Industry, the mining practices and extraction processes and the historical development of the Industry, is essential to any consideration of reclamation. In the earliest days of the Industry, phosphate rock was produced by screening the phosphate pebble from the matrix. The waste, which consisted of overburden, clay, sand and fine phosphate, and was called "debris", was disposed of onto, either the adjacent surface area, or into mined-out pits. Since the Central Florida area was sparsely settled in those early days, there was no complaint from residents about contamination of streams or the resulting spoil piles - environmental concerns were non-existent. The development of the flotation process in the 1930's and the implementation of the flotation process in the early 1940's was a significant technological breakthrough in the Industry. This technique made possible the extraction of fine phosphate particles, and doubled the recovery of phosphate values from the matrix. However, the implementation of the flotation process produced a new waste disposal problem.

Historically, this area produced gold and silver from many well-known vein deposits, like Tayoltita, Topia, and San Jose de Gracia. Modern exploration identified three categories of deposits: 1) low grade porphyry golds in shallow level dacite porphyries; 2) batholith-related deposits; and 3) those formed in volcanic sequences of Late Cretaceous to Late Tertiary. At least four porphyry golds have been identified, of which Metates is best known. These are formed by and within dacite porphyries, associated hydrothermal breccias and sometimes within surrounding metasediments. Their ages are from mid-Cretaceous to Early Tertiary. Precious metal deposits associated with batholiths occur as veins, contact haloes in metasediments or volcanics, skarns, tectonic breccias, hydrothermal tourmaline breccias, dacite dikes or as disseminated or stockwork deposits such as La Fortuna. Several new gold discoveries were made in older Early Tertiary Volcanic Sequences and in the younger Tertiary volcanics within prominent structures exceeding 3 to 5 km in lengths. Some of these are open-pittable but most have to be mined by underground methods.

INTRODUCTION Increasing a miner's chance of surviving a disaster requires advance planning for emergencies, adequate training of personnel, and the provision of proper survival equipment. It is extremely important that fires and toxic gases be detected early, and that warning systems such as stench, audible and visual alarms, and communications systems be provided to allow timely escape. However, situations do occur where timely warning is not provided and immediate escape is not possible, regardless of the precautions that are taken. Under such circumstances, a combination of new per¬sonal protective devices and old techniques can provide protection that is adequate to save a miner's life. SELF-RESCUE EQUIPMENT Self-rescuers are devices which provide a short-term supply of respirable air under the potentially lethal con¬ditions following a mine disaster. Functioning either as filtration devices for the elimination of carbon monoxide (CO) or as oxygen supplies, self-rescuers allow an endangered miner a limited amount of time in which to effect an escape or reach a place of temporary safety. Carbon-Monoxide Self-Rescuers For almost 50 years, filtration self-rescuers have protected miners' lives following explosions or fires. Designed to eliminate carbon monoxide from inhaled air, the first of these devices was approved in the 1920s and has evolved into the two units that are approved today-the Mine Safety Appliance (MSA) W-65 and the Draeger 810. Both of these units rely on the cata¬lytic conversion of very toxic carbon monoxide to rela¬tively safe levels of carbon dioxide (CO,). As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, both of these filtration self-rescuers operate in the same manner. On inhalation, the mine air passes through both coarse and fine filters that remove the dust, preventing the dust from coating the chemical beds or entering the miner's mouth. The air then passes over a drying agent that removes water vapor; this is required to prevent the water vapor from poisoning the catalyst. Subsequently, the dried air passes over the Hopcalite catalyst, where carbon monoxide is converted to carbon dioxide. Then, the air passes through a heat exchanger that reduces the temperature of the inhaled air. Finally, the air is inhaled by the user. Air exhaled by the user passes through the heat ex¬changer and exits the device through an expiratory valve. Both units of this type are subject to certain limita¬tions: 1) The units do not protect the user against oxygen¬deficient air; when air is inhaled through this type of self-rescuer, the device only removes the carbon mon¬oxide. If the mine air contains less than 15% oxygen, anoxia is inevitable. Symptoms of anoxia include dizzi¬ness, shortness of breath, quickened pulse, and deeper and more rapid respiration while the victim is at rest. During heavy exertion such as would be expected dur¬ ing escape efforts, a 15% oxygen level can cause loss of consciousness. 2) The units do not protect against excessive levels of carbon dioxide. Available data on carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide concentrations following explosions or fires are limited, but there are indications that the carbon monoxide concentration can rise to 2% and the carbon dioxide concentration can reach 5 or 6% of the mine air (by volume). In some situations, the in¬haled air could contain up to 6 or 7% carbon dioxide. At a carbon dioxide concentration higher than 2%, breathing patterns can be affected adversely. At a con¬centration of 6 or 7%, the effects include severe respira¬tory distress, with unconsciousness resulting from exer¬tion such as that needed for escape activities. 3) The units do not protect against high inhalation temperatures. The catalytic oxidation of carbon mon¬oxide to carbon dioxide is an exothermic reaction that evolves a large amount of heat. As the carbon monoxide concentration increases, the temperature of the inhaled air also increases. Available data show that above 1.5% carbon monoxide, the air inhaled through some self¬rescuers can be as high as 90°C (194°F). At those

The structure of a mine ventilation network (M.V.N.) can be represented graphically using either the mine plan (map) itself or a number of other types of diagrams. In the U.S., the two most common approaches are the line and the schematic diagrams (see Figures 1 and 2). The purpose of this paper is to introduce another type of diagram, called the canonical diagram (6). The method of M.V.N. representation which uses canonical diagrams is used extensively in Europe, and especially in Poland, where it was developed. The canonical diagram is a noncalibrated topological image of a ventilation system. It gives a simple representation of the ventilation network, allows for the classification of currents within it and enables rapid computer analysis and computation, as well as the representation of the results. It is especially useful in studying and controlling the air flow, and it may be a life saving tool in conducting rescue operations during and after mine fires.

Status of ISO 14000 standards. The ISO 14000 are voluntary international standards providing a frame-work that allows a company to integrate an effective environmental-management system (EMS) into its operations. The purpose of an EMS is to provide a systematic procedure to identify the environmental aspects of a company's activities, evaluate any significant impacts and use the information to set objectives and targets toward continuous improvement of the company's environmental compliance and performance. In addition to the specifications for certification, ISO 14000 can be used as a guide to develop an effective environmental-management system or for self-declaration. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a worldwide federation founded in 1947 to promote the development of international manufacturing, trade and communication standards. The organization is now represented in 118 countries, with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) representing the United States. The principal goals of the ISO is "to promote the development of standardization and related ac¬tivities in the world with a view toward facilitating the international exchange of goods and services and to develop cooperation in the sphere of intellectual, scientific, technological and economic activity." ISO develops standards with input from government and industry. Because the standards are voluntary, there are no legal requirements to pressure countries to adopt them. However, many governments, industries and US agencies are adopting the ISO standards as a requirement for business trans¬actions, thereby, compelling suppliers to adopt ISO standards. These business and market forces, which are likely to be strategic business issues in the 21st century global marketplace, are imposing the need to develop a systematic approach to environmental management. The ISO 14000 series evolved from a United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. It includes a broad range of elements: the basic environmental management system, environmental auditing criteria for internal and external auditors, criteria for environmental performance evaluation (EPE), environmental labeling criteria and life-cycle assessment methodologies. The standards comprise two categories: organization evaluation standards and product oriented standards (Table 1). The ISO 14001 specifications contain the requirements for developing an environmental-management system that may be objectively audited for certification. The ISO 14004 standard provides guidance on interpreting the ISO 14000 specifications for the development and implementation of the EMS and for coordination with the management system of the company. On Sept. 1, 1996, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Registrar Accreditation Board (RAB) signed a formal agreement to create a new entity called the National Accreditation Program (NAP). To obtain certification, a company must fulfill the requirements outlined in ISO 14001. It is required that "a third party give written assurance that a company's EMS meets all the requirements of ISO 14001." Preparing for ISO 14000 can include subscribing to voluntary environmental initiatives; learning from ISO 9000 quality-management experiences; and utilizing information from recognized training courses, publications and numerous Internet resources. Once committed to an EMS, the management should provide sufficient resources to achieve continuous environmental-performance improvement, as outlined in an environmental policy. A thorny issue now being debated concerns the potential liabilities of documenting the environmental performance of a company. General impact of the ISO 14000 EMS standards. With increasing stakeholder awareness, costly end-of-pipe pollution-control approaches and the success of ISO 9000 quality-management standards, the ISO 14000 EMS standards are being adopted by companies and governments worldwide. The United States and Canada have well-established programs. In Europe, countries differ but are firmly committed toward environmental-management standards (BS 7750, EMAS and ISO 14000). The Department of Environmental Protec¬tion of the State of Pennsylvania is using ISO 14000 as a vehicle to develop a closer working relationship with industry, and it is anticipated that this policy will eventually lead to fewer environmental site inspections for those companies with ISO 14001 certification. Normal process development for pressure preoxidation treatment of refractory gold ores starts with laboratory batch autoclave tests, followed by operation of a continuous autoclave pilot plant for confirmation of the various process options. This scheme will generally provide good information showing the effects of such variables as grind size, time, and temperature, and will indicate whether autoclave preoxidation will produce solids that are amenable to cyanidation for gold recovery. However, several recent test programs conducted over the last three to four years have shown that the cyanide leaching responses of treated solids from the batch tests can differ considerably from those achieved by the continuous pilot plant autoclave. Examples are provided to demonstrate these differences and to show the importance of extending the laboratory investigations to include the use of a semicontinuous autoclave test procedure. A test case is cited in which this procedure provided data that could not be obtained from batch tests.

The rapid decay and disfiguring of stone monuments in urban and desert rural areas has challenged conservators to protect stone surfaces from premature decay. They attempt to halt the natural process of stone decay and possibly to restore the original strength lost mostly by chemical weathering and the loss of binding cement. Ageneral solution is not possible because the physical and chemical characteristics must be considered for different stone types. The failures of stone preservation and restoration are greater in number than the cures. The need for repair of stone decay goes back to evidence of Roman replacement of decaying stone. The presence of excess water in buildings has long been recognized. Moisture tends to enter masonry from air in humid climates, a most important but often underrated factor (Fig. 1) suggesting that sealing should be the answer. Undesirable staining and efflorescence result in accelerated scaling. Today, the great variety of chemicals available to the modem conservator for sealing. consolidating, or hardening stone fall into two very different categories: surface sealers and penetrating stone consolidants, or a combination of both. SEALERS Sealers develop a tight, impervious skin which prevents access of moisture. Surface sealing has saved monuments from decay by eliminating the access of atmospheric humidity. Pressure tends to develop behind the stone surface by moisture escape. Efflorescence, crystal growth action, and freezing can cause considerable spalling (Anderegg, 1949). Flaking results when moisture is trapped behind the sealed surface. Yellowing and blotchiness are also frequently observed. The following sealants are in common use today: linseed oil, paraffin, silicone, urethane, acrylate, and animal blood on stone and adobe. Extensive cracking and yellowing has resulted soon after application. In the past many such treatments have created more problems than cures: 1. Linseed oil and paraffin have been in use for centuries. Embrittlement and yellowing occur rapidly because these are readily attacked by solar ultraviolet radiation. 2. Animal blood as paint has temporarily waterproofed adobe mud and stone masonry. The origin of blood paint has a religious background rooted in the Phoenician and Hebrew cultures. Instant water soluble dried blood can substitute for fresh blood. Winkler (1956) described the history and technique of the use of blood. 3. Silicones have proven very effective and are long lasting. In contrast, acrylates, urethane, and styrene are generally rapidly attacked by UV radiation (Clark et al., 1975). Sealing of Different Rock Types Granitic rocks have a natural porosity traced to 4.5% contraction of quartz, during cooling of the parent magma, compared with only 2% contraction of all other minerals; protection against the hygric forces may require waterproofing of granite in some in- stances. The Egyptian granite obelisk in London is an example. Soon after its relocation from Egypt to London, Cleopatra's Needle was treated, in 1879, with a mixture of Damar resin and wax dissolved in clear petroleum spirit; surface scaling became evident after half a year of exposure to the humid London atmosphere. The treatment of the ancient granite monument from Egypt has denied access of high relative humidity (RH) in London to the trapped salts inherited from the Egyptian desert and has protected the monument from decay (Burgess and Schaffer, 1952). The sister obelisk set up in Central Park, New York City, has fared less favorably because similar treatment was done too late, only after the salts hydrated and hundreds of kilograms of scalings disfigured the obelisk surface (Winkler, 1980). Surface coating of other common stones may be needed. Crystalline marble absorbs moisture from high RH atmospheres: dilation may ensue when curtain panels bow as the moisture starts to expand during daily heating-cooling cycles. A good sealer may prevent the moisture influx provided that no moisture can enter from the inside of the building. Limestones, dolomites and all carbonate rocks are subject to dissolution attack by rainwater, especially in areas where acid rain prevails (Fig. 2). The interaction of sulfates in the atmosphere with the stone can be halted by waterproofing to avoid the formation of soft and more soluble gypsum. The stone surface attack can be diminished if nearly insoluble Ca-sulfite crusts can form, instead of Ca-sulfate. Replacement of fluorite or barium compounds at the stone surface acts as a hardener, rather than a sealant. Sandstones have generally high porosity and rapid water travel can occur along unexpected routes and from any direction. Any surface sealing may do more damage by scaling and bursting than if the stone is left without treatment. Sealing of sandstones is therefore not advised at any time. Testing the efficiency of sealants: Several authors discuss waterproofing materials, silicones, urethanes, acrylates and stearates, as to their water absorption, spreading rates of water on the treated surface, water vapor transmission, resistance to efflorescence, and general appearance (Clark et al., 1975). De Castro (1983) measured the angle of contact of a microdrop (0.004 cm3) on a stone surface as characteristic of the wettability. Nearly 30 estimates of the minimum earth stress were obtained from hydraulic stimulation tests in 5 boreholes at depths varying from 0.6 to 4.3 km in jointed granitic rock near the Valles Caldera in New Mexico. This site is located within the transition between the Colorado Plateau and Basin and Range provinces. Stresses were determined from open hole hydraulic fracturing experiments conducted with water at pressures up to 48.3 MPa (surface). The virgin bottomhol e temperatures ranged up to 327°C. Pressure records show no evidence of rock breakdown, indicating injection into pre-existing joints. A typical pressure response consists of an early wellbore storage period followed by linear fracture flow, which then evolves into a steady pressure, fracture extension mode. Shut-in behavior is characterized by a sharp pressure drop followed by a more gradual decay. The minimum earth stress shows a general linear trend with depth, increasing with a gradient of 19 MPa/km. A low stress anomaly occurs from 2490 to 3100 m where the minimum stresses are as much as 28 MPa lower.

Although gold's market price dropped considerably from 1980's all time high, exploration for the precious metal remained a particularly bright spot last year, especially in the western US. For example, in Nevada-the nation's largest gold producer-further exploratory drilling at Louisiana Land & Explorations Co.'s deposit at Round Mountain and Newmont Mining Corp.'s find near Carlin resulted in sharp boosts in estimated reserves at both sites. Louisiana Land said its deposit is well on the way to being one of the largest gold reserves in the US. Based on further drilling, Newmont said its Gold Quarry property near Carlin could now produce 4.7-6.2 t/a (150,000-200,000 oz/ year). Reserves at Newmont's two properties near Carlin and a third property in southeast California are reportedly at least 218 t (7 million oz), up from the previously announced 128 t (4.1 million oz). Gold exploration activities were brisk in many other states, including a noticeable effort to explore and reopen dormant properties. Although the return on investments didn't appear as favorable last year as they did in 1980, the gold price was apparently sufficient to spur healthy exploration activity. Outside precious metals, market conditions, and subsequent exploration activity, appeared much more bleak. In the molybdenum market, for example, prices continued to slide, and Amax Inc. tightened its exploration budget. (Amax supplies 60% of the domestic market and 45% of the world demand for molybdenum.) The company spent 16% less on exploration during the first six months in 1981, compared to the same period in 1980. Copper and many other base metal producers appeared in similar straits throughout the year. Uranium exploration activities continued to suffer last year also due to depressed market conditions. Among others, Gulf Minerals Resources and Amoco Minerals Co. suspended uranium exploration activities in the West. Despite current unfavorable conditions, some companies continue uranium searches, confident that market conditions will rebound. On a brighter note, interest in exploring for some industrial and strategic minerals appeared on the upswing last year. Minerals used for oil and gas drilling, such as barite and special sands, were especially noteworthy. In geophysical activity, significant developments were achieved for electromagnetic techniques in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Geophysical logging activity declined due to decreased uranium exploration, and computer hardware continued to impact the way mining geophysical data are being acquired. Many presentations and papers were given last year to help exploration geochemists develop new techniques to locate concealed ore bodies. Among techniques described were statistical and computer modeling for enhancing anomalies over blind deposits.
