A unique partnership between the Colorado Mine Safety and Training Program (CMSTP), the Colorado Rock Products Association (CRPA) and the Higher Education and Advanced Technology (HEAT)Center resulted in a video CD-ROM training program for new miners entering the aggregate industry. Cooperation from everyone involved, including the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA),made this the product against which other training materials in the mining industry will be measured in the 21stcentury. This product’s versatility and wide application make it a tool that is as critical to a mine’s success as any earthmoving machine. The state and federal grant money involved allows this product to be affordable to small operators and independent contractors. The quality of this two CD-ROM set rivals any commercially made CD-ROM training.

The Galena mine is located astride the Polaris fault in the Coeur d'Alene district of northern Idaho. The surface installations are about a mile up Lake Gulch, the mouth of which is about 2.4 km (1 112 miles) west of the old town of Wallace. The mine had its beginnings when the first claims were located in the early boom days of the district in the 1880s and when the first underground ore bodies were opened up in 1917. During the ensuing 14 years, ore was mined from which were recovered 5.4 Mkg (12 million lb) of lead and almost 14.2 Mg (112 million oz) of silver. Workings consisted principally of a vertical shaft from surface to the 800 level and an offset underground shaft to the 1600 level, together with extensive lateral openings. High-grade silver-copper ore was discovered near the Silver Standard fault in the Sunshine mine, a few miles to the west, on the 1700 level in 1930. By 1937, the Sunshine and adjacent mines were producing silver-copper ore on a regular basis. In 1943 additional ore of a similar type was found along the Chester fault, to the east of the principal Sunshine workings. The interest of American Smelting and Refining Co. (renamed ASARCO in 1975) was aroused and the company's geologists determined that the Galena mine, idle since 1931, provided a geological environment in which similar ore might be found. After negotiations were initiated with the owners of the property, Callahan Zinc-Lead Co., the property in question was deeded to Callahan's wholly owned subsidiary, Vulcan Silver-Lead.

Since its formation in 2004, the Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf (EMEPC) has been collecting hydrographic, geological and geophysical data to support the extension of the continental shelf beyond 200 NM. In 2008, the EMEPC acquired a 6,000 m rated ROV named "Luso" and has been cooperating with several national and international institutions to increase and improve its operational capabilities to conduct research on deep-sea minerals. The Portuguese continental shelf corresponds to a broad area of the seafloor encompassing different physiographic domains: the mid-Atlantic ridge system, abyssal plains and numerous seamounts. From 2008 to the present, the mid- Atlantic ridge and seamounts have been the most visited sites with the ROV "Luso". Several hydrothermal vent sites are known to occur along the mid-Atlantic ridge to the south of the Azores archipelago and mostly within the Portuguese EEZ. Vent fields were also discovered in the extended continental shelf, namely the Rainbow and the Moytirra sites located to south and to the north of the Azores archipelago, respectively. The most studied seamounts correspond to those forming the Great Meteor chain and the Madeira- Tore rise. All these visited sites are related either with the occurrence of polymetallic sulphides or cobalt rich Fe-Mn crusts and the opportunities to further pursue their exploration will be discussed.

Technical problems associated with the cleanup of historic mines are not new. Nor are they unique to the mining industry or the governmental agencies addressing them. Both face the same issues and challenges of defining the problems, evaluating remediation options and finding the most economic and effective solutions.

"Since 1984, there have been 39 fatalities involving striking and pinning of the operator and other workers by the continuous mining machine (CMM). In January 2015, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) finalized a regulation to require proximity detection systems on all continuous mining machines except full-face machines (MSHA, 2015). Proximity detection systems are designed to stop machine motion to protect miners from striking/pinning hazards. Several MSHAapproved proximity detection systems are commercially available.NIOSH researchers have been involved in the development and testing of proximity detection technology since creating the HASARD system (Schiffbauer, 2002) and have recently conducted research intended to develop more advanced proximity detection technology for CMMs (DuCarme et al. 2013; Jobes et al. 2012; Carr, DuCarme et al. 2013 and Carr, Li et al. 2013). In addition, NIOSH has also conducted research investigating how the signals of a proximity detection system propagate (Li, Carr et al. 2013 and Li, Jobes et al. 2012) and have developed a novel method for determining the location of a personal wearable device (PWD) relative to the magnetic field generators (Carr et al. 2010 and Jobes, et al. 2012).To evaluate the performance of proximity detection systems implemented in industry, NIOSH researchers conducted tests in 2013 on three systems installed on CMMs at three underground mines in Illinois and West Virginia. The results of these tests indicated that, while generally consistent performance was observed, there were opportunities for improving performance. These results were presented at the 2014 SME Annual Meeting (Carr, Lutz, et al. 2014). Since that time, second-generation systems have become available to the industry and are becoming more commonly used.Beginning in early 2014, NIOSH researchers conducted underground testing of these secondgeneration proximity detection systems installed on CMMs. Five tests were conducted on four installations of second-generation proximity detection systems, with one installation being tested twice. The tests were conducted at mines located in Illinois, Virginia and Kentucky with seam heights ranging from 137 cm (54 in.) to 213 cm (84 in.). These tests were conducted using the same test protocol used during first-generation testing, which is summarized in the following section."

Conventional Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS) installations for monitoring CO, CH4, O2 and air-velocity throughout underground mines are usually relegated to a modest 3-5 mile extent and with data communication speeds confined to a ponderous 1-5K baud range. New US-MSHA and state regulations require fast reporting of unsafe conditions, and the old 20-30 minute updates are no longer acceptable. To communicate farther and faster has always been a problem, because data reliability degenerates with excessive distances and high speeds. Because of this, very large mines often resort to costly optical-fiber media, using expensive OF cables and repeaters to obtain the necessary coverage. This entails high initial cost, as well as high maintenance and downtime costs to repair or replace broken optical fibers. Rel-Tek has pioneered with its DX-Bus communication data highway, which uses inexpensive twisted-pair telemetry cables, which can now communicate well into the 20-mile extent of the largest mines -- normally a brick wall for low-tech AMS systems. This extended range, enables the use of twisted-pair cables and provides a low cost alternative to OF systems. This paper discusses the DX-Bus, and its latest accomplishment, the ?B-LINK,? a unique high-speed communication repeater that maintains the 19.2K-Baud data rate. On-going innovations to our workhorse Millennia-DX computer software have kept pace with this extra speed/distance phenomenon, resulting in a dually-optimized AMS package: both hardware and software. Cost savings are substantial, and at no sacrifice of reliability ? nearly always at 100%. Sensor updates are measured in seconds, not minutes and hours. Twisted pair copper cable is cheap to purchase and install and a breeze to maintain. Rel-Tek uses the B-LINK's wide branching capabilities to enable the AMS to extend 20-miles both far and wide. Actual experience in large US coal mines -- both longwall and continuous mining operations -- confirms the large mine performance. The ventilation and safety benefits to the mining industry are immeasurable.

The Toulon South Tunnel in France is the second part of a project started 20 years ago. After the problems and delays suffered during the construction of the North Tunnel, due to a complex geologic context of highly fractured and soft rocks under a highly urbanized environment, a very dense automatic monitoring system was implemented to control the settlements of surface (more than 1000 points), the structures adjacent to the tunnel alignment and the underground galleries being constructed. The latest automatic instrumentation systems were installed, using for example AMTS capabilities in terms of ?automatic prismless settlement monitoring?. All the data (geotechnical, structural and geological) was gathered in a global automatic data acquisition system and continuously available on a web based interface. Three different threshold levels (notification, anomaly, alert) were set up, each one with a differential and an absolute value for settlements. Depending on the actual geological site conditions and the actual monitored settlements, different supporting systems and excavation techniques were used. Furthermore, the monitoring data was also used to predict and anticipate the future settlement, by comparing it continuously with the theoretical Peck settlement curves. This method allowed a better risk management by limiting the settlement on existing structures and helped to secure the Works progress schedule, for a project that lasts from July 2007 to March 2011. The implementation of this observational method application is presented in this paper.

Mr. Garrett brings up several interesting points with respect to the proposed API specification for "nontreated bentonite." However, although not explicitly stated, these specifications are being written based strictly on bentonites from the Wyoming/South Dakota area. Other sodium bentonites may be suitable for use as drill mud but will be unacceptable since the specifications are designed for Wyoming bentonites. Regardless of the API's intent that its specifications are intended only as guidelines, they are generally adhered to on an international basis and, for practical purposes, might as well be chiseled in stone. Estes (1986) notes that the quality of bentonite available from Wyoming producers has steadily declined since the early 1960's. The plastic viscosity: yield point (PV:YP) ratio was included in the current API 13A specification primarily to prevent excessive polymer treatment of lower quality bentonites to make drill mud. However, with development of polymers designed to control YP, this specification cannot ensure that only high-quality bentonites are used for drill mud. Nor will the new specifications for untreated bentonites. Other sodium bentonites are available. Bentonite produced in southeast Oregon demonstrates superior performance characteristics without addition of polymer or other chemicals. However, the exceptionally high purity of these deposits leads to a relatively high YP:PV ratio since the naturally high YP probably results from the higher purity and smaller particle size of this bentonite (Rath, 1986 and personal communication). These bentonites typically have a smectite component exceeding 90% (Rath, 1985), compared with 70% to 75% smectite for typical Wyoming bentonites, as determined by X¬ray diffraction and tests for colloid content. As evident from the accompanying table, the untreated Oregon bentonite has excellent rheological properties, though different from Wyoming bentonites due to the high purity. Additionally, this bentonite reacts well with polymers typically used in the oil industry, making it eminently suitable for use in a low-solids mud system. The extremely low grit content, less that 0.5% on a 75 mm (200-mesh) wet sieve, greatly exceeds the standards set for Wyoming bentonite. Optimum rheological properties are obtained at a higher moisture content than Wyoming bentonites. At 10% moisture, API 13A maximum, the clay is overdried, again reflecting the high smectite content. Design of the ultimate pit limit to direct long range mine planning has been a celebrated problem in the mining industry, and in mining academia, since 1965. Although many papers have been presented on this topic, even today, there is not a single solution technique which is widely accepted and considered universally best. Many philosophical differences exist among the pit planners concerning the use of different methods and it appears that resistance is very strong towards accepting other techniques if you are a believer in one. Whatever the case might be, the pit parameterization technique for the ultimate pit limit design is the latest and takes a different approach than its predecessors. There are already a number of papers which discuss the concepts involved (Francois-Bongarcon, 1976; 1978; 1980; 1981); however, the aim of this paper is to fill in some of the gaps which are thought to be missing in the previous discussions and, in addition, to present the recent research done on the subject at the Centre de Geostatistique de l?Ecole de Mines de Paris in Fontainbleau, France. This paper is divided into two parts. The first part will discuss practical aspects and interpretations of pit parameterization concepts with- out using mathematical or theoretical arguments; the reader who is interested in the theory should refer to Francois-Bongarcon (1978). The second part will present an approach to obtain a complete double parameterization of reserves using an inexpensive (computer costs) single parameterization algorithm. A case study of this approach is also included.

At least one US senator believes that the events of Sept. 11, 2001 made many citizens see the need for the country to become more self-reliant on its growing energy needs. Even before that tragic day, however, the Bush administration was making a strong push to open up more public land for energy and natural resource development.

MINExpo INTERNATIONL 2000 was a good place for companies to introduce new products, technologies and services to the mining industry. Caterpillar took that a step further. The company hosted a one-day preview of its mining products at its Tinaja Hills Training and Demonstration Center near Tucson, AZ. About 30 members of the trade press spent the day at Tinaja Hills before heading on to Las Vegas for MINExpo INTERNATIONAL 2000. Dozens of Caterpillar professionals provided the editors with a first-hand look at Caterpillar’s mining trucks, loaders, excavators, road graders, water trucks and engines. In addition, these Cat experts explained the intricacies of each piece of equipment, the latest technology that led their improvement and their value to the company’s mining customers.

Sustainable development has brought social, environmental and energy efficiency concerns together with management and governance of natural resources. Cement manufacturing, an energy- and natural resource-intensive industry, is adapting to meet sustainable development goals. Emission standards for cement plants and increasing energy costs have lead to changes in the use of natural resources and recycled materials. Utilizing pozzolans or supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as mineral admixtures in blended cement or as a substitute for cement in concrete lowers energy costs and CO2 emissions. Although the western U.S. is rich in natural pozzolans, artificial products, particularly fly ash, have greater use as mineral admixtures. Pozzolans and SCMs have many beneficial properties, such as preventing alkali-silica reactivity, a common problem in the western U.S. Barriers exist for mineral admixtures in the cement and concrete industries because of past inconsistencies in quality or availability. New environmental regulations on the primary industries producing artificial mineral admixtures could adversely affect the quality and quantity of these materials in the future.

As the search for new sources of energy and minerals leads to more remote areas of the country - and the world - the need to plan for adequate housing and community facilities for the construction and operations workforces and their families takes on an importance equal to the mining and processing facilities themselves. A corollary to the need for planning is the increasingly crucial need for development companies to devise effective strategies for dealing with the local communities impacted by these projects. Experience has amply demonstrated the high price to be paid for failure to learn this lesson, a price measured in lost productivity, confrontation with local communities, labor turnover, mental health and other social and eocnomic problems. In Sweetwater, Wyoming, a new industrial activity caused the population to double from 18,000 to 36,000 between 1970 and 1974. During that period industrial productivity fell 25 to 40 percent, cost overruns on the principal new industrial facility exceeded 33 percent, annual employee turnover rates climbed above 100 percent, the local mental health clinic workload increased nine times and complaints to the local law enforcement agency increased 60 percent.

Next year, in 1964, Butte will celebrate its Centennial. It was in May, 1864, that the first recorded mining activity took place. During that summer, several rich placers were found on Silver Bow Creek and its tributaries, and a gold rush followed. As placer mining proceeded in the creek beds, the quartz lodes on the hillsides were located and the veins were prospected. Mining in Butte entered its second phase when the rich silver mines, the Alice, Moulton, and Lexington, were opened. The silver boom lasted until the decline in the price of silver in the early 1890's forced the closure of many of the mines. An indication of the beginning of the copper mining era in Butte was in 1866 when it was noticed that green copper carbonate discolored some of the, lode material. It was not until ten years later, however, that the Anaconda and St. Lawrence claims were located by Michael and Ed Hickey. The claims were sold in 1880 to Marcus Daly and in 1881, Daly obtained financing and organized the Anaconda Silver Mining Company to exploit the vein The silver venture was a failure because of the predominance of copper which diluted the bullion to only 400 fine.

Many utility fuel choices 1990-95 defied expectations, with utility decisions and coal market developments ever more closely linked. The Central Appalachian coal boom never occurred; clean-enough coal was developed in the hard-hit Midwest; Colorado-Utah coal surged; Pittsburgh seam production strengthened; utilities embraced Powder River Basin coal; and emission allowance prices collapsed. Competition drove productivity gains, but the future is not a simple repeat. Phase 2 brings fewer viable compliance options. Mega-railroad pricing has become a key risk factor -- will this be countermanded by merging utilities and power market competition? Revenue losses from vintage contracts are problematic. Uncertainty also plagues natural gas, in spite of unanimity across major forecasts, since recent experience has been so heavily influenced by the gas bubble.

The past four years since the 2008 MINExpo have been a roller coaster ride for the mining industry, with highs and lows and everything in between. One of the natural consequences of this uncertainty has been a number of significant consolidations and mergers, and this trend has trickled down into the crushing industry. And while there have been some significant changes to this sector of the mining industry, many of the big players have weathered the storm. The following is a look at some of the mineral processing companies that will be at MINExpo. McLanahan Corp. McLanahan Corp. is an example of the changes in the sector. Editor's note: The subject of mining on the moon can generate a wide range of strongly held opinion, from those leaning toward the view that, ultimately, such activity is the destiny of mankind to those who believe that all suggestions for moon mining to date are unrealistic, wildly expensive and in the hands of people who 'know nothing.' MINING ENGINEERING herewith publishes some of the basic pros and cons on the subject of moon mining by writers who are among those holding strong views on the subject, with the hope that some of our readers may be interested in joining this debate. Every mineralogist and most mineral industry people were keenly interested in the examinations of the first moon rocks brought back by US astronauts in 1969. Suffice to say that the examinations revealed nothing exotic in the mineral makeup of the very limited rock samples. The rocks were generally of igneous type, dark-colored and contained some common, Earth-type minerals. There was, in Earth terms, above average TiO2 content, but they contained nothing of commercial significance by Earth standards. Therefore, interest in moon minerals rapidly faded. Years later, on Sunday, May 4, 1986, living in Reno, NV, this author was shocked to read a local newspaper article by the Dean of the Mackay School of Mines, University of Nevada, Reno, headlined, "Moon Mining Not Far Off." Considering that the announcement more or less coincided with a slump in our domestic mining industry, the immediate questions in a reader's mind
