The minerals Industry carries out over US$ 2 billion of R&D annually. The R&D is performed at three levels ? in house research facilities; on a one-on-one basis with a research provider; as syndicated (collaborative) research. The key to a successful R&D programme is project selection. It is suggested that at this time of ?bounty? for the minerals industry the research portfolio should contain some ?blue sky? but potentially long term significantly beneficial projects. This said, the projects should align the technical concepts with the business imperatives. AMIRA has found the ?Road Map? concept has assisted in defining areas for R&D. Examples of this methodology using a Copper Road Map developed by AMIRA for the copper producers operating in South America is presented. The benefits derived from syndicated research are also discussed.

"This paper develops themes explained at two SAIMM platinum conferences. Optimization techniques can be used to significantly increase the value of mining businesses by enabling better long-term planning decisions. Open pit and underground mine design, mine scheduling, cut-off grade and blending, stockpiling, and the linking of these to flexible elements of the metallurgical recovery processes are all evaluated together. Transport or sale of intermediate products and the requirements of the product metal markets can also be considered. Experience shows that net present value (NPV) can be increased significantly, usually even before the expenditure of significant amounts of project capital. Recent studies of NPV have aimed to simultaneously evaluate the impact of the optimized financial solution on the non-financial features of a project or operation.The case study presented comprised a commercially orientated review of the prefeasibility study designs and cost estimates of a platinum group metal (PGM) project in South Africa, followed by value chain optimization and sustainability studies of the project carried out simultaneously to identify potential value uplifts to be gained and guide the owners’ team going forward into the feasibility study phase. Some of the major aspects of the project that were found to have significant potential to add value included enhancement of the business model by the application of activitybased costing and theory of constraints, focus on the highest net value portions of the orebody in the early years of production, enhanced and optimized scheduling of the underground mining operation, application of dynamic grind and percentage mass recovery from ore to flotation concentrate (also known as percentage mass pull) to optimize revenue, application of elevated cut-off grades early in the life of mine, matching of the mining and processing capacity, expansion of the operation subject to capital availability, and installation of downstream processing facilities subject to regional third-party capacities.The investigation of non-financial project features focused on demonstrating that a financially optimized solution could also have a number of other benefits. These are mentioned briefly in the paper, which aims to present the status of the project at an early stage of its development."

A number of myths and misconceptions are widely held, especially regarding: the age of the technology, the use of a hollow electrode, arc stability and shape, arc and bath radiation, interaction between the arc and molten slag, electrical behaviour of arcs and slags, a comparison between AC and DC furnaces, DC reactors, the lifespan of bottom electrodes, and the applicability of DC arc furnaces to various metallurgical systems.

Phase equilibria have been determined experimentally for pseudo-ternary sections of the form ?MnO?-(CaO+MgO)-(SiO2+Al2O3) with a fixed Al2O3/SiO2 weight ratio of 0.17 and MgO/CaO weight ratios of 0.25 and 0.17 respectively for temperatures in the range 1473-1673 K. The primary phase fields present for the MgO/CaO weight ratio of 0.17 include manganosite (Mn,Mg,Ca)O; dicalcium silicate a-2(Ca,Mg,Mn)O?SiO2; merwinite 3CaO·(Mg,Mn)O·2SiO2; wollastonite [(Ca,Mg,Mn)O?SiO2]; diopside [(CaO,MgO,MnO,Al2O3)?SiO2]; tridymite (SiO2); tephroite [2(Mn,Mg)O?SiO2]; rhodonite [(Mn,Mg)O?SiO2] and melilite [2CaO?(MgO,MnO,Al2O3)?2(SiO2,Al2O3)]. For the section with MgO/CaO weight ratio of 0.25 the anorthite phase (CaO·Al2O3·2SiO2) is also present. The liquidus temperatures of ferro- and silico-manganese smelting slags have been determined. The liquidus temperatures at low MnO concentrations are shown to be principally dependent on the modified basicity weight ratio (CaO+MgO)/(SiO2+Al2O3).

Tight control of electrode paste additions, hard and soft paste levels, baked zone position and electrode temperatures are integral to superior Söderberg electrode management practices. Paste addition is typically effected through briquettes, cylinders or large blocks. Each electrode paste form has its advantages and disadvantages, but probably a more crucial element from an electrode control perspective is the frequency and amount of electrode paste addition into a Söderberg electrode column. The detrimental effects of excessive soft paste levels leading to Stokes? Law segregation of paste in the electrode column are well documented, while several operators have effectively implemented the use of electrode thermocouples to monitor paste temperatures and automated slipping algorithms to control baking conditions within electrodes. Somewhat less well appreciated are the negative influences of inadequate soft paste levels, especially when coupled with excessive paste cylinder or block additions and resulting high hard paste levels. The alternative of insufficient hard paste levels and associated overheated electrode paste must also be considered, and can contribute to paste segregation directly. This condition also has the potential to generate gas mixtures in the electrode column that are concurrently a potential health hazard, while being prone to spontaneous combustion. Results of industrial trials on electric furnaces using Söderberg electrodes in a variety of applications from ferrochromium, to ferromanganese and even platinum-bearing base metal sulphides smelting are presented to illustrate the influence of paste loading practices on the dynamics of hard and soft paste levels. Possible electrode failure mechanisms attributable to inadequate paste level control will be discussed through some industrial examples. Suitable paste loading practices to mitigate the risks of inappropriate paste levels and associated electrode incidents are presented.

Recently, a new kind of filtration has emerged, namely nano-filtration (NF). It is a membrane-based process which exhibits totally unique separation characteristics for dissolved salts as well as for many non-charged species. By exploiting the particular separation characteristics of this new membrane type, many unique and novel separations have been made possible. The basis for separation by nanofiltration is the negative surface charge of the membrane. This results in rejection of multivalent anions, whilst associated cations are also rejected to maintain electro-neutrality. This peculiar property enables separation of dissolved ions such as sulphate and copper from acid, whilst the acid may be purified for reuse. This paper aims at providing an overview of the principles of nanofiltration, illustrated by particular examples.

The genesis of Simrac?s technology transfer practices and future initiatives are discussed in this report. Simrac produces a relatively large volume of research-based health and safety outputs that must be communicated to its tripartite stakeholders and to other interested and affected parties. The wide spectrum and complexity of the transferables, together with the diversity of end-user needs and skills of the recipient population, necessitate customizing of technology transfer practices. In an attempt to optimize this process, a variety of practices are employed. Information is transferred by means of publication and dissemination of a variety of reports (paper, website and CD).Knowledge transfer is directed to health and safety practitioners by means of workshops, seminars, best practice booklets, handbooks and textbooks. Promotion of recently completed projects is directed at targeted recipients by means of project launches. Only isolated cases of piloting and implementation of technologies have been undertaken due to lack of resources and past organizational focus. It is anticipated that Simrac?s new organizational structure and management system, together with end-user involvement by industry champions, from project inception to implementation, will enhance the effectiveness of the technology transfer process.

The South African Coal Industry had its beginnings in the Eastern Cape in 1859 when coal was mined to satisfy the fledgling settlements in the Eastern Cape. The growth in the industry was relatively slow up to the early 1970s when, firstly, the export business was expanded coupled with a major increase in the quantity of coal converted to liquid fuels and utilized for power generation. To meet this increased demand the industry developed many new operations employing the latest mining technology and systems. Coal production in South Africa reached 204 million tons in 1996 and revenue from exports reached R8 billion making it the second-largest foreign exchange earner after gold. In his address Rick P. Mohring describes the role coal plays in the international energy scene and outlines South Africa?s position as a producer and consumer of coal, and the challenges facing the industry. A wide range of steam-coals are produced to satisfy both the local market (power generation, coal conversion and the metallurgical industry) and the export steam-coal market. South Africa is in a unique position regarding the export market as it is still a relatively low-cost producer and is geographically well-placed to play in both the European and Far East markets. There are, however, a number of challenges facing the industry. To retain our competitiveness in the international market, ways of minimizing the cost pressures caused by high-cost inflation, increased environmental protection obligations and a decreasing quality resource base need to be sought. Locally the coal mining industry has a major role to play in Eskom?s goal of reducing the real cost of electricity by 15% in the next three years. Safety and health, productivity and the adaptation of the latest technology are issues being addressed by the industry to maintain its dominant position within the South African economy.

In deep level hard rock mining the rheological behaviour of the rock is important as time-dependent aseismic processes can lead to a stable dissipation of energy thus reducing violent outbursts. Underground closure measurements, observations of time-dependent fracture formation and siesmic data indicate that the rock in deep South African gold mines shows significant time-dependent behaviour. The objective of this work is to quantify the time-dependent rock behaviour for laboratory specimens and underground conditions. Laboratory experiments indicated that lava and quartzite specimens undergo measurable creep strain at stress magnitudes below the failure stress. Quartzite is however prone to more significant creep at lower stress levels. A viscoelastic analysis showed that laboratory creep results can not fully explain the behaviour observed underground. The in situ behaviour is governed mainly by the rheological behaviour of the fracture zone and the resulting time-dependent formation of new fractures. A viscoplastic discontinuity model implemented in a boundary element program is used to simulate this behaviour.

ABSTRACT: The paper is devoted to two major aspects related to the abandonment of salt mines: 1)- Long-term risk associated with the mechanical instability of surface and its consequences for public security and properties. 2)- Long term dissolution and transport of salt resulting from its communication with groundwater. Basic characteristic features of salt deposits and mining methods are presented through the studies already undertaken on French mines. This analysis allows to identify major hazards encountered in different traditional salt mines and solution-mining cavities. In particular, the role of overburden (presence and thickness of salt layer in exploitation roof, presence of clayey rocks or hard rocks e.g. dolomite or anhydrite), presence of water-bearing strata and possibly natural brine levels, discontinuities, etc. are discussed. In the second part, the main features of mechanical behaviour of salt (creep, damage) as well as transfer processes of this material are presented. The influence of these aspects on the long term evolution of abandoned salt mines is then analysed. KEY WORDS: exploitation, abandonment, salt, mechanical, stability, transport, solution, brine. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Artikel bezieht sich auf zwei bedeutende Aspekte beim Salzabbau: 1)-Das langsfristige Risiko zur Bodenoberflächeunbeständigkeit und sein Einfluss über Mensch= und Gütersicherheit. 2)-Die langsfristige Auflösung und Beförderung des Salz beruhen sich auf Studien über französiche Bergbauen. Diese Analyse emöglicht es, die bedeutendesten Risiken in verschiedenen Salzgruben zu identifizieren, bzw. Traditionellen oder durch Auflösung abgebauten. Insbesondere wird die Rolle des Deckgebirges (Vorhandensein und Dicke von Salzschicht am Dach des Grube, Beisein von Tanlager oder hartem Gestein wie Bitterkalk oder Anhydrid), Beisein von wasserhaltigem Boden und/oder gesalzenen Wasserflächen, Trennflächen, usw… erötert. Im zweiten Teil werden die haupsächlichen Eigenschaften des Salzverhaltens (Kriechen und Beschädigung) beschrieben. Les principales caractéristiques de gisements et d’exploitations de sel sont présentées en s’appuyant sur les études antérieures réalisées sur les exploitations en France. Cette analyse permet d’identifier les risques majeurs rencontrés dans différentes mines de sel traditionnelles ou exploitées par dissolution. En particulier, le rôle du recouvrement (présence et épaisseur d’un banc de sel au toit de l’exploitation, présence de terrains argileux ou de roches dures telles que la dolomie ou de l’anhydrite), présence de terrains aquifères ou de nappes salées éventuelles, discontinuités, etc. sont discutées. Dans la deuxième partie, les principaux traits du comportement mécanique du sel (fluage, endommagement) ainsi que les processus de transport de ce matériau sont présentés. L’influence de ces aspects sur le comportement à long terme d’exploitations abandonnées de sel est ensuite analysée. This paper is based on a study to determine the potential beneficiation opportunities for marble from Griekwastad in the Northern Cape Province. The marble was characterized mineralogically by X-ray diffraction. Major and trace elements were determined using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy. The sample was crushed, and the crushed material beneficiated by tumbling and polishing. The resulting beads were incorporated into a variety of jewellery and other decorative items. It is concluded that the beneficiation of Griekwastad marble presents a good opportunity for value addition and job creation, provided that an effective marketing strategy for the products can be developed..

The Q-coda method for estimating the quality factor Q(f)= Qo(f)n was used to characterize seismic wave attenuation in a region of the Kaapvaal Craton that includes the mining areas of the Bushveld Complex and Witwatersrand Basin. Seismic waveform data, collected by locally distant stations of the South African National Seismograph Network (SANSN), consisted of mining-related events with magnitudes ranging from ML 1.8 to ML 4. Q was calculated for nine different source-receiver pairs spanning the study region. A weighted average Q based on the number of available data gave an estimated attenuation relation for the study region of Q(f) = 327 f 0.81.

Particle morphology is a term that is used to describe the overall external shape and appearance of particulate solids. From the physical point of view, a precipitated solid is characterized primarily by the size and morphology of the particles (Sohnel andGarside, 1992). If the morphology of the crystal structures is to be related to the processing conditions, then the morphologies need to be quantified in some way. This can be achieved by using surface area measurements as well as fractal dimensions. The key idea is that rugged and indeterminate systems can be described by using a fractional number that describes the ruggedness of the system (Kaye, 1989). In other words, when the complexity of a structure, such as an agglomerate, increases with increasing magnification, it is useful to employ fractal dimensions to describe the structure. Fractal geometry proposes that, instead of attempting to measure the length of an irregular boundary, the rate at which the length of the boundary approaches infinity with increasing resolution should be calculated. Cross-sectional profiles of rugged particles can thus be quantified using the fractal dimension, and a measurement of the ruggedness of the morphology obtained. One of the additional uses of measuring the fractal dimension is that the measured value can be related to the physical properties and formation characteristics of the particle (Kaye and Trottier,1995). The morphology of nickel crystals was quantified with fractal dimension calculations of particle cross-sections. Particle cross-sections were obtained by mounting the particles in resin and polishing back. These were then photographed using Scanning Electron Microscopy and the resulting profiles analysed using the structured walk technique.

Mining method selection is the first and most important problem in mine design. In this selection some of the parameters such as geological and geotechnical properties, economic parameters and geographical factors are involved. The mining engineer must balance the input parameters and select the method that appears to be the most suitable; mining method selection is both an art and a science. Distinguishing all parameters that have an effect in mining method selection and in the determination of weighting factors of any parameter is a difficult task in an ordinary environment. This paper attempts to determine important parameters that impact on the mining method selection and demonstrates the calculation of the weighting factors for each selected parameter. This study has been directed to the research of a methodology for the selection of an optimal mining method. Different fuzzy methods are presented as an innovative tool for criteria aggregation in mining decision problems. Two methods of fuzzy multiple criteria decision making are used for selecting the optimal method with which to mine anomaly No. 3 of the Gol-Gohar iron mine. This paper finally presents a comparison of the selection methodologies and further discusses the most appropriate method investigated.

Support system design for tunnels and underground excavations has for many years relied heavily on the use of rock mass classification systems and the Hoek-Brown failure criterion as a means for characterizing rock mass behaviour. Because of their development, both the GSI system and the Hoek-Brown criterion admirably characterize most ?normal? rockmasses from the viewpoint of their behaviour for rock excavations. They, however, run into difficulties when applied at the two ends of the rock competence scale. This is largely because block size and incipient strength are such that rockmass behaviour in these domains tends not to be controlled by interblock shear strength but rather by material strength. At the low end of the rock competence scale (UCSi <<15 MPa and GSI generally <30) discontinuities play less of a role and rock mass strength tends to matrix strength. Similarly, at the high end of the scale (GSI >>65, mi>>15), because discontinuities are now widely spaced, block size becomes so significant that again, intact material behaviour rather than the fracturing becomes the dominant factor controlling rock mass strength. In this paper several case examples are presented to illustrate the application of the high-end (spalling) and low-end (weak ground) transition Hoek-Brown relationships proposed by Carter, Diederichs and Carvalho (2007) as a basis for better defining rockmass behaviour at the extreme ends of the rock competence scale.

The Kwaggashoek East pit is one of the four production areas of Thabazimbi Iron Ore Mine. The Kwaggashoek East Open pit mines through the abandoned sublevel caving operations of the Kwaggashoek East underground workings. A risk assessment indicated that the primary risk is the occurrence of surface subsidence. Based on local knowledge, a hypothesis, that most of the cavities were filled with broken rock as a result of roof collapse and bulking of failed material was formulated. To test the hypothesis a number of geophysical methods as well as probe drilling was utilized. The results of the resistivity, gravity and ground penetrating radar surveys were inconclusive in determining the position of voids. Either there were no voids present or the resolution of the surveys was not high enough to pick it up. It is accepted that only small voids remained, and that the supported roof hypothesis is valid. As a precautionary measure all the production blast holes within the caving area were over-drilled by forty percent. This would collapse the roof of any small voids or tunnels immediately below the block. This operation proved to be successful as two of the three underground levels have been mined out with no subsidence occurring in the pit floor.

Computers have revolutionized the collection of data on modern mines. Never before has it been possible to collect data from all aspects of the mining value chain at rates now common. With this has come a new challenge. Deriving information from these copious amounts of data and disseminating it. This problem is being exacerbated by technical software systems, which use proprietary and binary data formats that severely inhibit the flow of data and information both across departments and the larger organization. Generally this had led to data duplication and data redundancy. The Gemcom Enterprise Mining System (GEMS) makes use of industry standard, secure and open databases for all its data objects. It manages multiple users accessing the same bits and bytes in the database, preventing data duplication and redundancy. Developed in the Microsoft BackOffice ® environment, GEMS is also able to leverage the enormous amount of tools available in this environment, whether it’s for e-mail notification, reporting or data capture. Microsoft’s® Active Server Pages are one of these tools. These are standards used to create dynamic and interactive web pages with links into databases and many other objects. The real example outlined in the text, demonstrates how a user anywhere in the world is able to login to a web page and run a query that returns a report with vector plots of performance for the user-selected time frame. As integration is tightened between the various components of the mining value chain, the importance and reliance on ASP pages will grow as the need for management information tools develops. The Norwegian ferroalloy industry has high ambitions regarding environmental standards. Basic research work has been performed to improve the fundamental understanding of ferroalloy processes and the environ-mental aspects. This paper will present work dealing with the understanding of formation and control of NOx, PAH and dioxins. During this work various techniques and methods have been applied, such as comprehensive industrial measurements, laboratory experiments, model development and application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The main goal has been to reduce the environmental impact of ferroalloy plants, by means of improving the combustion processes done by introducing new charging routines and optimized furnace operations, instead of installing expensive gas treatment systems. The Norwegian obligations in accordance with the Gothenburg protocol are to reduce the NOx emissions by 30%, compared with the 1990 level within 2010. Measures developed in this work have resulted in 40-60%reduction in NOx emission, and major reductions in PAH and dioxins for ferrosilicon and silicon metal plants. This has been achieved by introducing semi continuous charging and improved furnace operations. Semi continuous charging and optimized furnace operations are shown to reduce the blowing activity (i.e. emission of large quantity of SiO over the charge by direct channelling from the crater zone). It also reduces variation in off-gas temperature and dust production. To understand the processes and to achieve our results we have used online equipment, with fast sample rates and response times, to measure the off-gas compositions and temperatures. Most of the measuring techniques used are based upon optical principles making use of the absorption- and emission spectrum of the gases. In addition a new prototype instrument is developed for continuous measurement of off-gas characteristics, total dust amount and off-gas temperature. The presented work is a result of a long term co-operation research and development teamwork, between the industry and the research community, and has improved both the process and reduced the emissions. The work has introduced new process design and operation standards, and has resulted in ferroalloy production with better environmental standards.

Labour protection, that is prevention of occupational disease and reduction in the frequency of accident, has always been a matter of major concern of mining industry. Management and the government should promote and maintain high safety standards through some measures to reduce accident frequency and occupational disease. This can be achieved by using the science and technology for improving the working conditions, educating workers and managers about accidents and prevention techniques. The detailed analysis of an accident requires knowledge of many factors such as location, time, type, cost of accident, victim, nature of the injury, personal and environmental factors etc. that can be obtained from the standard coded accident report form. There is a need to prepare safety data in a common format to produce a common safety reporting system and ‘Occupational Health and Safety Management Tool’ is being designed to manage this by using database and Internet technology. Precautions should be taken according to results from database queries by providing comprehensive and accurate national data. To have an accident is unfortunate, however, to have an accident and learn nothing from it is unforgivable. The current commodity boom is depleting the ore bodies at a rate not seen in the past. As the existing ore bodies get depleted, only the more inferior bodies are left for exploitation. This places an emphasis on beneficiation to upgrade the lower grade ore to high-grade feedstock for downstream processes. This paper discusses the role of dense medium separation in this quest for high-grade feedstock for the future. It covers the production and utilization of ferrosilicon and gives a future perspective of the technology. It concludes about the way ahead and the challenges facing the processing fraternity and mining industry.
