One highly relevant challenge in flotation is the recovery of fine particles. Due to their low inertia, these particles are mostly pushed aside by rising bubbles. Consequently, they typically exhibit low probability for bubble-particle collision and thus, a poor recovery rate. In this work, the trajectories of fine particles in the vicinity of rising bubbles were investigated. The measurements considered a chain of millimetric bubbles in a rectangular container filled with deionized water. The flow field near the bubbles was measured by tomographic particle image velocimetry (TPIV), employing fluorescent tracer particles of 33μm diameter. Subsequently, trajectories of larger particles and bubble-particle collision events are recorded with 4D particle tracking velocimetry using a high temporal and spatial resolution. The results reproduce the well-known collision of particles on the leading edge of a rising bubble. Additionally, collisions on the tailing edge were observed in cases with a low Stokes number. The TPIV results demonstrate, that the high turbulent kinetic energy in the bubble wake allows particles to divert from the fluid streamlines and collide with the tailing edge of the bubble. The tailing edge collision probability increases with the bubble Reynolds number and decreased particle inertia. Overall, the investigation shows that the collision of fine particles in the bubble wake should be considered for the development of further collision probability models. Furthermore, the importance of turbulence on the fine particle flotation was demonstrated. The concept of underground ore processing, in which valuable ore and waste are separated at a coarse particle size to improve the economics of operations and minimise the environmental impact, seems attractive from a sustainability perspective. Perceived benefits of such an operation include energy and cost savings due to a reduced hoisting load, a reduced footprint of surface operations, and using material for backfill that has not been contaminated by process chemicals. Progress in the South African mining industry in this area has however been below expectation, and opportunities for underground processing in deep, narrow reef operations were therefore explored by an Excel-based simulation with sensor-based sorting (SBS) as concentration technology. Various PGM mining scenarios incorporating factors such as the mining rate, depth of operation, and effects of dilution and particle size on the metallurgical efficiency, were compared. Whilst these initial results can be regarded as indicative only, they have shown that the economics of such an operation are driven by selective mining at significantly higher rates than achievable with conventional methods. Also, the cost of preparing, conveying and placing rock backfill will need to be lower than that of hoisting waste and depositing it on a surface dump. Another aspect to be addressed is whether ore sorting machines would be able to operate under harsh conditions underground and what provision would need to be made to ensure their efficient operation. Further investigations should focus on refining costs, incorporating environmental considerations in the modelling of economics and sustainability, and compare greenfields with brownfield scenarios. Introductory remarks Dr N. G. W. Cook: This paper was published in your Journal in May of this year and you will, therefore, have had the opportunity of reading it over the past six months. I can state that experience has shown that the paper is substantially correct, but a number of questions have to be answered. The first question, Mr President, that I would be happy to answer, is how is it that one is able to cut hard, abrasive quartzite with a strength some six times greater than that of good concrete? The essence of the answer is that there is a tremendous difference between abrasion, or scratching, and cutting, or chipping. For example, it is well known that a diamond will scratch or abrade almost anything. It is also relatively easy to chip, crack or crush a diamond. As a demonstration I have here an ordinary bench grinder, and with the bench grinder I also have a piece of tool steel. The wheel on this bench grinder is a silicon carbide wheel, which is an extremely hard material, and the tool steel is much softer. In rock-cutting we use tungsten carbide for cutting the quartzite. The quartzite and the tool steel have roughly the same hardness. You can sharpen tungsten carbide with a silicon carbide wheel. In fact, this is done. It won't surprise any of you, therefore, when I show you that tool steel can be sharpened with silicon carbide. Now, what I propose to do is to change the configuration of this experiment and use the soft tool steel to cut silicon carbide, and if I can do that, I think you will agree that I have gone some way to being able to cut quartzite, which is about as hard as tool steel, with tungsten carbide, which is harder than quartzite. Let me do this. (Demonstrates.) That, I think, is a very clear demonstration of how it is possible, with a metal, to cut an extremely hard and brittle material. What, essentially, is the difference that we have here? In the first case, I held the tool with a relatively low force against the hard silicon carbide wheel. This generated a relatively low average stress, which was insufficient to fracture the carbide wheel. Nevertheless the protuberances on the silicon carbide wheel indented the tool steel and abraded it at a multiplicity of points, and quickly reduced the section of the tool steel that I held against the wheel. By changing the configuration and clamping my tool steel in a firm post, against the silicon carbide wheel, I changed these conditions very extensively. I now had a high force. I had to exert a considerable moment on that lever. The tool was anchored so that it could sustain these high forces, and they generated high stresses, which were adquate to fracture the silicon carbide. Now, what about wear? It so happens that, in these two experiments I have just done, the power I was using was about the same-a small fraction of a horse power.

This study was aimed at determining the effects of industrial action on profitability in the South African platinum mining sector. We compared companies where employees engaged in industrial action (affected companies) to strike-free companies (competing companies). Industrial action refers to strikes by rockdrillers, as these strikes typically result in the shutdown of production at the mines affected. A t-statistics analysis of significant differences in revenue and earnings of affected and non-affected platinum companies was conducted using data from platinum mining companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange from 2011 to 2015. Contrary to international studies, which suggest that the spillover effects of industrial action positively affect competing companies, our findings show that profits in the platinum sector decrease significantly during strike periods for both affected and competing companies. The results indicate industrial action is a threat to the profitability of all companies, and that employee demands should be prioritized and negotiated before they result in industrial action. Improved dialogue between management, labour unions, and employees in the platinum mining industry is recommended. The study contributes to the scanty literature on the effect of industrial action on the profitability of mining companies in a developing economy.

On 24th November, 1982, Mr L. W. P. van den Bosch was inducted as the President for 1982/1983 of the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa, which represents more than 40 scientific, professional, and technical bodies. Lynne Wilson Pearson van den Bosch was born at Senekal in the Orange Free State on 11th February, 1921. He was educated at the Hoer Volkskool, Heidelberg, and the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained the B.sc. degree in mining engineering.

The construction of one of the world's largest goldrecovery plants to treat run-of-mine ore is progressing on schedule at the President Brand Gold Mine in the Orange Free State. Designed to treat 390 kt per month, the plant will recover 96 per cent of the gold from the ore at a capital cost of 160 million rands in terms of January 1983 money. It will replace the existing gold-treatment installation, as well as provide a 30 per cent increase in capacity. This paper describes the metallurgical aspects and properties of a duplex austenitic-ferritic steel SAF 2205. As well as having high yield strength and hardness, SAF 2205 combines the high resistance of ferritic stainless steels to chloride-induced stress-corrosion cracking and the excellent resistance of austenitic stainless steels to hydrogen-induced stress-corrosion cracking. Its alloying elements contribute to its mechanical and corrosion properties as follows: nitrogen increases its pitting potential and improves its strength, nickel increases its resistance to pitting and its toughness, chromium and molybdenum give improved resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. SAF 2205 has better resistance than steel types 316 Land 317 L both to pitting corrosion and to stress-corrosion. This makes it a very good material for pipes, tanks, and pumps in harsh environments such as those in petrochemical and desalination plants.

There is a set of settled ideas in the field of the mechanics of rock mass joints, that need a deep revision, after the last experimental works of several authors. In this paper, this theme is approached under several viewpoints, like the following ones: the essential influence of the mating or mismatching of rock joints on their strength (different strength models are applicable to these two situations, one leading preferably to normal scale effects, and the other to inverse scale effects); Patton's model is a bad formulation of the joint strength, whenever there is a dilation effect in the slidings (actually, the essential consideration of the amplitude of the roughess isn't made by any limit equilibrium model, like Patton's model); the joint strength increases as the width perpendicular to the sliding direction is reduced (previous works of other authors suggested the independence of the strength on that width); the reduction of the anisotropy of the roughness, as the sample symmetry and sample dimensions increase; there is no scale effect in the discontinuity mechanics, if there is no roughness heterogeneity; when only the same roughness and undulation orders are involved in the tests, shorter samples have larger peak displacements and lower shear stiffnesses than larger samples (usually, the contrary is admitted). For all these reasons, there isn't an easy correlation between the small scale tests and the natural large joint scale. Only "in situ" large scale tests have some representativeness. All the above mentioned questions are correlated to each other. Mr P Smith, educated in England and the former Southern Rhodesia, joined Gold Fields of South Africa in 1966 as a Metallurgical Learner Official. After obtaining a BSc Eng at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1972, he returned to Gold Fields. Mr P D K Robinson was born in Zimbabwe, and was educated at Dale College in Kingwilliamstown, matriculating in 1952. He holds a Mine Surveyor's Certificate obtained in 1961) and a Mine Manager's Certificate (obtained in 1966), as well as an EDP from the University of the Witwatersrand.

"Cyclic voltammetry experiments were conducted on copper and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) in the absence and presence of ethyl xanthate, and compared to mass-balanced EH–pH diagrams. The results for copper duplicate those found in the literature and confirm xanthate chemisorption. However, the, results indicate that chalcopyrite oxidizes to chalcocite (Cu2S) and only afterwards is chemisorption observed due to small currents appearing with xanthate. This phenomenon suggests that the mineral's hydrophobicity is induced by more than dixanthogen and copper xanthate. Hydrophobicity was found to be pH-dependent over a range of alkaline conditions (pH 7–11) at narrow potentials (0 to –200 mV). An EH–pH diagram for chalcopyrite with xanthate is presented to illustrate the conditions under which chalcopyrite would be hydrophobic and thereby more thoroughly explain the results in the literature. IntroductionSulphide minerals are generally concentrated from ores by froth flotation, a physiochemical process that induces separation based on differences in hydrophobicity. In this process, a gas is bubbled into a slurry and the minerals that are hydrophobic (water-repelling) adhere to the bubbles and float to the surface while the hydrophilic (water-loving) minerals remain in the slurry. With sulphide minerals, the hydrophobicity is generally established in two ways. The first is by the addition of a collector, which is a heteropolar molecule with a reactive inorganic head group and an inert organic tail. Typically, the head group bonds with the sulphide mineral surface by adsorbtion either chemically (chemisorption) or physically (physisorption) or by complexing with atoms that solubilize somewhat at the surface (surface precipitation). These interactions leave the organic tail protruding from the mineral surface, thereby inducing hydrophobicity. The second method is by oxidation of the mineral surface to form a layer that is metal-deficient/sulphide-rich or comprised of elemental sulphur. Because the layer mimics naturally hydrophobic sulphur, this enables ‘collectorless’ flotation. Furthermore, this oxidation phenomenon adds an electrochemical dimension to the understanding of sulphide mineral flotation."

This paper investigates the effect of chemical and physical operational parameters on the reverse flotation of Timbopeba itabirite iron ore in a pilot-scale pneumatic flotation cell. Operational parameters include collector and depressant dosages, feed rate, superficial gas velocity and solids concentration. Results show that increasing collector dosage results in an increase in quartz recovery, particularly for the coarser quartz where recovery increases by nearly 30%. Increasing depressant dosage results in a decrease in both quartz recovery and hematite loss, for the coarser hematite particles. Increasing the feed rate has no effect on quartz recovery or hematite loss, suggesting that the pneumatic flotation cell is not residence time constrained. Increasing the superficial gas velocity results in an increase in quartz recovery to an optimum at a Jg of around 0.6 cm/s after which it decreases significantly, particularly for the coarser particles where recovery decreases by as much as 50%. Decreasing the solids concentration does not affect quartz recovery but results in significant decreases in hematite loss. Here, fine and coarse hematite loss decreases from around 25% to 12% and 10% to 2% respectively. Superficial gas velocity and solids concentration are operating parameters which have the largest effect on the flotation performance of the pneumatic flotation cell. Results suggest that this flotation cell should be operated at relatively low superficial gas velocities and solids concentrations. However, these are pilot-scale findings and would need to be tested at an industrial-scale where different operating conditions may be optimal. In recent years, the grade of silica in zinc concentrate has increased due to the degradation of zinc content and the increase in impurity content in natural ores. It implies that the development of silica removal technology from zinc concentrate is necessary to solve problems in the smelting process caused by the high content of silica in zinc concentrate. In this paper, the authors investigated the silica removal processes from silica-rich zinc concentrate by mineral processing approaches such as re-grinding and flotation. This study focused on the pulverisation process as a pretreatment for the investigation of individual minerals' liberation from the silica-rich zinc concentrates using different kinds of pulverisers. Flotation experiments were performed to separate silica and zinc concentrate from the pulverizsd feed sample using a pH regulator (NaOH), activator (CuSO4), collecting agent (PAX), and foaming agent (DOW froth 250). Results showed that the liberation rate of silica (SiO2) was reached 75% from 13% by pulverisation in an attritor with a 2 mm ball in diameter, while silica accumulated in a fraction over 20 mm in size. Flotation experiments indicated that silica removal efficiency was achieved by 44% from + 20 mm fraction obtained from pulverisation whereas the grade of silica in froth reached 1.85 mass% from 4.5 mass%. Results indicate that silica could selectively separate from silica-rich zinc concentrate, and 99.8 % zinc recovery is achieved under the studied conditions. Nanobubbles (NBs) flotation separation can be an indicator for improving the efficiency of fine particles through the conventional process. Since flotation reagents such as frothers can reduce bubble size, they can potentially be used for the generation of NBs and develop a selective NB flotation separation. This study explored the flotation separation of fine phosphate particles from their associated minerals in the presence of NBs, which were generated by using a phosphate flotation reagent (Flo-YS: collector-frother). The results of flotation tests showed that in the presence of NBs, the flotation efficiency was significantly improved. However, in the presence of NBs, surface chemistry analyses (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) illustrated that the collector adsorption on the surface of phosphate particles decreased. A comparison between outcomes of various phosphate flotation conditions indicated that increasing the flotation efficiency in the presence of NBs may be due to the aggregation of fine particles by the generated NBs, and also selective adsorption of NBs (hydrophobisation) on the surface of particles. In other words, generating NBs by selective collectors may increase efficiency and decrease the collector consumption of a flotation process. "Through the application of the Rietveld method, X-ray diffraction analysis has developed into a fully quantitative method for phase analysis. The Rietveld method itself has progressed from an unstable method that required constant operator intervention to a stable and robust method suited even for routine analysis. The method however, requires a good initial calibration and periodic checks on its precision and accuracy.Several examples from minerals processing, pyrometallurgy, and materials science show the strengths and applicability of the method. The limitations and sources of error are also discussed.1. IntroductionDiffraction of X-rays by matter has been used for more than 80 years, initially to elucidate the structure of crystalline matter, and to investigate the bonding between atoms. The first development of powder diffraction cameras and the later development of X-ray diffractometers saw the development of methods to identify phases and to try to quantify them in mixtures. A comprehensive database and search-match techniques have been developed over the ensuing years. Effective and accurate quantification had to wait for the so-called Rietveld' analysis where the total diffraction pattern is used and where the crystal structure data for the constituent phases are needed as input. Overlapping of diffraction peaks of different phases is handled without difficulty and reliable results can be obtained in spite of this occurrence.The development of methods for structure analysis from powder data has also progressed rapidly and more and more complex structures are being solved from first principles, i.e. without knowledge of unit cell or space group data. Because of the ease of use of the Rietveld method, it is finding increased application in metallurgy, especially in the quantification of phases of importance in minerals processing, in pyrometallurgical processes, and in materials characterization. This study will examine the principles of the Rietveld method, its application in metallurgy, and finally also the common pitfalls that need to be avoided.2. This should have good resolution and high diffraction peak intensities. With modem X-ray detectors, this can be achieved in minutes rather than hours.•,Instrumental parameters such as goniometer radii and slit sizes are needed. These are the so-called ""Fundamental parameters"". They are used to calculate the shapes of the resultant diffraction peak profiles that are caused by the instrument. The parameters are used to correctly separate the instrumental effects on the diffraction pattern from the sample effects."

A wide range of drill holes and process streams are sampled for resource estimation, grade control and contractual purposes in the minerals industry. However, despite the availability of training courses, conferences and both national and international standards on correct sampling practices, it is still surprising how often little attention is given to ensuring that representative samples are collected for analysis. The reason for this is that the responsibility for sampling is often entrusted to personnel who do not appreciate the significance and importance of sampling, with cost being the main driving force rather than whether the sample is representative of the material from which it was extracted. This seriously undermines the precision and accuracy of the analyses subsequently generated and can render the analysis process a total waste of time and money and expose mining companies to serious, potential, financial losses. Company management needs to reverse this situation and ensure that sampling is given the attention it deserves to generate representative samples for analysis.
