Discussion: L. T. Campbell Pitt: When Mr Garrett and I discussed the design and construction of plugs and bulk head doors to resist great water pressures in mines about ten years ago, we visualized an emeregeny when there would be no time for site preparation. We could not however, anticipate a problem of such magnitude and urgency as the one described in the paper under discussion. The paper very clearly describes the flooding and the measures taken to save the mine. The complete flooding would have been a national disaster. The account of the combat between man and water reads like the account of a military operation. It was an endeavour which achieved success because there was a master plan, tenacity and, in fact, heroism. The paper is of necessity a long one. In my contribution I will mention some historical facts and factors that I believe have relevance to the flooding and the saving of the mine. It is of great satisfaction to me to have been one of the two initiators of a new approach to underground plug design and construction. The investigation was taken over by a Chamber of Mines Committee which combined our early work with further research and the resulting data had a significant bearing on the West Drie emergency plug designs. The final plug length was correctly based on the requirements to obviate leakage. A plug to have structural strength only would have been very much shorter but so ineffective as to have become a waste of labour, material, and in consequence, wasted the limited time available to prevent flooding of the whole mine. The figure of 75 lb per sq in. sheer stress provided a very ample margin, in my opinion, but under the very difficult site conditions and the limitations of plug material suitable for the very unusual construction, justified such a figure. There must have been considerable temptation to reduce the safety margin due to the urgency to complete and commission the plugs, but it is much to the credit of the directors of this operation that nothing less than a safe design was permitted. In about 1945 Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mining Company, which was then mining in to the West Driefontein area to assist in early development, decided to protect themselves from a possible inrush of water from the latter mine. A bulk head door was accordingly designed and installed on 2 level between 1945 and 1948 at 4,218 ft below surface. Since West Driefontein paid for it, Gold Fields consulting mechanical engineers collaborated with their colleagues of Rand Mines who completed their design after a few modifications were agreed. This door was never used to prevent an inrush into Blyvooruitzicht but the exercise was very useful to Gold Fields when the high pressure doors initially installed on 10 and 12 levels between Nos. 2 and 3 shafts to enable isolation of one section of the mine from another were designed. At that time the capacity of West Driefontein to cope with an inrush of water was comparatively small because the storage in stoped areas and the installed pump capacity were much less than in later years. These doors together with others of the same design were later moved to the lower levels served by sub vertical shafts. In addition, doors to prevent flood water entering the pump chambers on 18 level were installed at each end of that level, and designed for a head of 360 feet so that water would have to reach 16 level before the pumps were flooded. All these doors were called upon to hold water and it is reported that only a small plug in one of the doors and a 4 in. dia flanged pipe joint failed. The lesson is that in these cases the smallest details warrant as much attention as the major ones. That these were the only equipment failures when so much depended on equipment, is very much to the credit of design engineers, both of the Gold Fields head office and companies who supplied both mechanical and electrical equipment. Until I had read the paper I wondered why the policy of isolation by bulk head doors was not continued as the development moved eastward towards the Bank Compartment and particularly when it pierced the Bank dyke. The reasons have been given in the paper. It was unreasonable to expect provisions to be made to counter the remote contingency that the large installed pumping capacity and mine capacity to store water would be exceeded during a peak inrush. When pumps were being considered for West Driefontein, it was decided that the Gold Fields standard underground main pumps at that time of 1 million gallons per 24 hours would be too small. Three alternatives were considered. 1. Very large units that would require underground sub assembly and dismantling of both pump and motor. 2. The largest pump and motor that could be conveyed as a complete pump or motor from surface to the pump chamber. 3. Pumps of higher speed to reduce dimensions and weight. It was decided to adopt alternate 2 because of avoidance of transporting pumps in parts and assembling underground. Alternative 3 was not favoured because high speeds would have introduced problems of more exact rotor balancing. I believe the decision was correct and in the crisis enabled comparative easy transport of pumps and motors to surface for overhaul and, if required, transfer to other pump stations. The standard pump thus became a 10 stage 1,500 rpm pump with a capacity of approximately 2 million gallons per 24 hours against a static head that varied

"The determination of the oxidation state(s) of an element present in a solid sample may be required for a number of reasons, including the assessment of the degree of reduction which has taken place during a multi-step production of a metal. In addition, possible flaws in a metal may result from small amounts of oxides included in the solid. The analyte of interest may be present as a major component of a sample of interest, or as a minor impurity - beneficial or requiring removal - in another matrix.Numerous methods have been established for the analysis of species in solution samples - for example, Fe2+ and Fe3+ by titration, Cr6+ by colourimetric means, etc. With appropriate knowledge of the solution being analysed, many of these methods are fairly straightforward, extremely reproducible and accurate. In those instances where the analyte in a solution is known to be in only one form, the analysis is even more straightforward, since it can be achieved instrumentally (by AAS, rCP-OES or rCP-MS, for example).However, the situation with respect to the analysis of solids is not as simple. Various techniques - such as X-ray diffraction - are routinely used by our mineralogists to obtain information about the various minerals present in solid samples, and thus about the oxidation states of the analyte elements present. However, these techniques usually give results that are qualitative, or semi-quantitative at best. They are also usually time-consuming and expensive. One of our colleagues at Mintek, Deshenthree Chetty, has done extensive work in developing a method for the quantification of manganese species in solids using mineralogical methods, and this is no small achievement."

This research involves the investigation of phase transformations in the platinum-chromium coated system. Single-layer 0.1 µm platinum coatings were deposited via electron beam deposition on 99.98 percent pure chromium substrates. Specimens were subjected to systematic heat treatment in a vacuum furnace at 900°C for up to 20 hours. Phase formation and the changes in surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Both CrPt and Cr3Pt phases are formed during heat treatment for different times at 900°C. Significant changes in the morphology of this coated system were detected after heat treatment at 900°C for 20 hours.

JoughinProduction planning is a subject that lies at the interface between the computing centre and mine management. Discus¬sion during this session was thus largely concerned, directly or indirectly, with communication between computing and mining personnel, and as such was relevant to the symposium as a whole.Mr A. Weiss set the tone of this discussion by referring to `user-orientated systems'. He congratulated Mr Burne in this regard, pointing out that his long-term production scheduling program, as a computer system, was similar in approach to the manual system it replaced, and was therefore easily understood by planning engineers. He asked whether the schedule engineer had his 'hands on' the system, to which Mr Burne replied that the engineer did in fact spend several days running alternative schemes through the computer. Mr Weiss commented on the advantage of having terminals on site for this sort of engineer-computer interaction. He also commented on the flexibility of Mr Burne's approach to scheduling and how preferable this was to a one-step optimization package. This was brought home by a question from Mr H. D. Small: Mr Burne's program sometimes found it necessary to temporarily halt an advancing face, and he asked whether the logic of the program could be altered to avoid this (e.g. by suitably slowing down the rate of face advance). Mr Burne replied that it was in fact easier for the planning engineer to sort this problem out manually. The way in which the computer results were presented made it particularly simple for the production engineer to see how to avoid or remedy a stopped face.On the technical side, both Mr Weiss and Mr H. M. Wells questioned Mr Burne on the handling of grade control by his program. From answers by Mr Burne and his colleague Mr K. H. Thomson it emerged that a spot-check on grade every now and then was all that was necessary at Mufulira, and that the idea of actual grade control was more a question of short-term than of long-term planning."

"Based on the complicated geological production conditions and abnormal strata behavior of the fully mechanized caving face No. 102 in the Xinyang Coal Mine, we analyze the breaking and forming process of distinguishing key block structures in close spaced coal seams. This analysis establishes an integrated mechanical model of these distinguishing structures. Furthermore, the horizontal force TAB generated by downward key blocks A and B is quantified, as is the Pressure PG exerted by key block B on caved gangue. Finally, the interaction mechanism is revealed. Analysis of the results using Mathematica reveal the following: 1. Both TAB and PG exhibit approximately inverse relationships to coal pillar width b; 2. TAB exhibits an approximately exponential relationship with mining height M of which the base is greater than 1; 3. PG exhibits an approximately arctangent relationship with mining height M. Combining these results with field observations, we conclude that the area in the vicinity of supports 100#–120# in the upper area of working face No. 102 is the likely zone of abnormal strata behavior. Thus, this area was classified as a key control area. Based on these results, the graded support control technique is proposed. Application of this technique in the field resulted in a reduction in the rate of hydraulic support system malfunction from 47% to 7% in the key control area. In addition, during times of periodic mining pressure, the roof caving height value never exceeded 0.3 m and the maximum spalling depth never exceeded 0.2 m. Overall, the results indicate that this new technique has markedly increased the stability of surrounding support rock material. IntroductionClose-spaced coal seams are widely distributed in China, and mining proceeds from the uppermost to the lowermost seam (Zhang et al., 2008). In the case of coal seams in close proximity, a particular set of risk factors becomes pertinent. These include disturbance of lower seams during the mining of overlying ones and the decrease in mechanical stability of lower coal seams following repeated movement of key blocks in main coal seam roofs. This inevitably results in behaviour such as heavy wall spalling and support damage to fully mechanized caving faces in lower-lying coal seams, which necessitates a significantly increase in the measures to support surrounding rock material (Zhang et al., 2010; Huang et al., 2013; Xie et al., 2013)."

"Chairman: Professor E. P. PFLEIDER Rapporteur: Mr P. R. JANISCHPapers:Optimum design of an open pit by D. A. PhillipsAn open pit design system for stratiform ore bodies by L. A. J. Pronk van Hoogeveen, J. R. Cutland and M. WeirAn open pit design model by R. H. Robinson and N. B. PrennThe Chairman in opening the session highlighted the current situation in the United States of America where some 85 to 90 per cent of all mining (except for coal) is done by open pit methods, and where some 40 per cent of the coal is mined by open pit. The South African industry is, of course, dominated by the deeper level underground gold mines; however, with the aid of an extensive open-pit technology developed in other countries, South African companies arc continuing to explore possibilities of open-pit exploitation of base mineral, coal and diamond deposits. Several successful ventures are already in operation at Phalabora, Optimum Colliery, Kimberley and elsewhere, and South Africa is undoubtedly benefitting in this regard by drawing on the experience of others.The papers of this session were therefore particularly pertinent, particularly when viewed in conjunction with those presented at an earlier South African conference devoted specifically to open pit mining.Two themes dominated the discussion which followed presentation of the three papers at this session. The first related to the practicability of using the reported techniques as a tool for management, and their acceptability as such to mine management. This was, of course, not peculiar to this particular session, but rather the major point of debate over the entire conference.The second theme concerned the reliability of the initial drill hole data on which any open-pit design must necessarily be based. This gave added emphasis to the problem of practicability, for no management is likely to accept an elaborate pit design unless confidence can be placed in the ore reserve assessment.In noting these two features of the discussion, it should be remembered that all the three papers dealt largely with design and pre-planning; there was an unfortunate lack of papers or discussion on the subject of controlling the day-to-day mining of open pits, and this is an area where the potential impact which can be made by the computer is even greater.In introducing his paper, Mr D. A. Phillips pointed out that it was concerned only with optimization, and that it therefore assumed, firstly, an adequate subdivision of the orebody into ore blocks characterized by grade, rock type, structure, etc., and, secondly, an acceptable forecast of costs and mineral prices in order to generate a suitable profit matrix. However, programs dealing with these problems for both massive, disseminated and stratiform ore bodies are available to Roan Consolidated Mines. The method of optimization which he had described had been used on a region split into 28 000 blocks, for which the program used three hours of C.P.U. time on an IBM 360/40 computer. The computer design had provided a three per cent improve¬ment on a normal design of the same area."

PerlmanDynamic control of a mining enterprise by R. G. CoyleAn economic model of the mineral sands industry by G. P. A. HoweMr M. Splaine, in opening the discussion on Mr Perlman's paper, asked whether the model, as fitted by data up to 1963, predicted the rise in the price of copper in 1967, and whether the model could be used to capitalize on short-term price fluctuations.Answering the second question first, Mr Perlman said that the horizon used is six months to one year. In the very short term the activities of speculators obscured the effect of the fundamental econometric variables. This effect, however, was removed if one moved to a longer term, say, quarterly. In 1963 the model had predicted a price rise in 1964 and 1965 and a drop in price in 1966. The rise in 1967 had been caused by a strike, and imponderables such as large strikes were difficult to include in the model since they were unpredictable. Model simulation can be used to show the effect of strikes on price and the effect of small strikes is small.Mr B. R. van Rooyen said that because models are both calibrated and tested on historical data a bias was introduced which gave rise to an overoptimistic estimate of the accuracy of the forecasts. To this Mr Perlman replied that there seemed to be no alternative to the use of historical data for calibrating and testing models, and thus little hope of avoiding the bias. A second point made by Mr. van Rooyen was that manage¬ment tended to be suspicious of complex models and that frequently more heuristic models were sufficiently accurate and preferable for investment decisions. He added that if management were not involved in the model building the econometrician might easily go astray, Mr Perlman replied that symbiosis between data analysts and users of the model was essential and that the experience of the practitioner must be reflected in the model.Mr M. R. Fuller-Good remarked that a clear understanding of future price trends was essential for effective capital planning, and asked, first, how one went from the compiled data on supply and demand to the determination of their effect on price, record, whether necessary data, for example, capacities, could be obtained timeously, and, third, when strikes restricted supply, whether stockpiling by consumers induced large price fluctuations."

Reduced downtime and maximized availability of mining machines are the key factors in optimizing production rates. As technology moves industry towards an age of ?intelligent machines? it sets the foundation for change in mining equipment design, functionality, and maintenance. Recent mining machine designs are integrating more and more electronic components into the core functionality of individual piece of equipment due to regulatory and legislative requirements, such as TIER rating, as well as from a safety aspect such as personal detection systems. This paper describes the use of existing on-board electronic equipment to increase machine availability through automated maintenance planning and diagnostic fault-finding capability. The automated maintenance planning takes place on the machine itself in order to be independent of the mine?s infrastructure, while the diagnostic capabilities allow for reduced downtime. The paper also presents a concept to transfer operational data to surface to be able to optimize planning of maintenance and to reduce downtime. Case studies are presented where such systems have been commissioned and are currently in operation, the possibilities of this technology application for the future are examined.

Significant political and economic changes have taken place in our society in the past year that are going to impact on our minerals industry, and therefore also on our members. Surely, it is not coincidence that the economic and political changes have occured simultaneously? South Africa, by virtue of its infrastructure and technology, is strategically placed to develop the potential of Africa's mineral wealth. In this address, I give my personal views on the ability of the mining industry to participate in the wider mineral resources of the African continent.

Historical Background. South Africa's industrial history began with the discovery of gold and diamonds during the last century, and the mining industry was the first chief component of our technological development. During the past six decades, quantum leaps were made in other fields, too, when other industries and research bodies such as Escom, NDC, Iscor, Sasol, Foskor, Alusaf, Mintek, cs I R, SA B S, and A E C were established. These meaningful additions have two outstanding characteristics. Firstly, they were linked mainly to primary activities such as energy and minerals and, secondly, their establishment was to a large extent due to the driving force of individuals such as Van der Bijl, Van Eck, Rossouw, Schonland, and Roux, rather than to impersonal government policy. Encouraging signs of the evolution of such policy has emerged during the past few years.

Discussion J. de V. Lambrechts (Fellow): The author's paper is a brilliant follow-up of an earlier paper by Starfield and Dickson.1 I have no quarrel with Dr Starfield's computerization of a complex problem, but I do not believe that he is getting quite the right answers from his programme. My impression is that his predictions about wet bulb temperature increases in very deep mines are over optimistic; in other words, that it will be hotter than Dr Starfield predicts. This is putting my views in a nutshell. This is not the occasion on which to indulge in lengthy argument about the original paper by Starfield and Dickson, but the present paper is, after all, based directly on that earlier paper and if the one fails, the other cannot succeed. I did level certain criticisms at the first paper and cannot say that the authors' replies were very convincing. I do not think it is a sin to admit that I belong to the old school which believes in thorough field experimentation and practical trials and no amount of mathematical manipulation or physical theorizing, no matter how excellent, can make up for inadequate practical confirmation. This, as I see it, is still the crux of the matter. The original paper by Starfield and Dickson still rests on somewhat scanty practical evidence and I would be much happier if Dr Starfield's computer programme, based on the Starfield-Dickson model, had been checked against a large mass of observations in the practical mining situation. This is what both Wiles2 and myself3 had tried to do previously. What we lacked in mathematics and/or computer aids, I think the present paper by Dr Starfield lacks in practical substantiation. This is no condemnation of the author's paper which, taken by itself, is excellent but I think the final stage is still lacking, namely the bringing together of theory and empiricism in a manner acceptable to all. This may be wishful thinking on my part but I hope, within the next year or so, to come up with a modified Starfield-Dickson model in such a way that the computer answers will agree in the majority of cases with the few hundred field observations which are already on record. Hemp (Visitor): Dr Starfield's paper has very effectively rounded off one particular aspect of the general problem of heat flow in mines. The ease with which this computer programme can be used to calculate temperature increases in horizontal airways must lead to its wider use in ventilation planning and, in developing this rapid method, Dr Starfield has indeed rendered a valuable service to the mining industry. One could consider further instances of heat flow in airways in which the availability of a rapid computer method would be desirable, e.g. the flow of air down a shaft, where there is an increase in temperature due to adiabatic compression, as well as an increase in virgin rock temperature as the depth increases. However, this particular case would not present any new problems and would merely require an extension of the exisitng work. I should like in this contribution to talk about an aspect of environmental control in mines which, I think, will become more important in the future. It is well known that wet bulb temperatures are subject to fluctuations underground. In some instances, particularly in stopes, the fluctuations, both with time and position, can be considerable. The theoretical work which has been carried out on temperature increases has been aimed at the prediction of mean temperatures, and no account has been taken of fluctuations around this mean. It is questionable whether this approach will, on its own, be sufficient, particularly when temperature increases in stopes are considered. The fluctuations in air temperatures underground arise from two causes. The first of these would be the fluctuations in surface conditions, and here one could list random, diurnal and seasonal fluctuations. The second cause is the multitude of things which vary in a mine and here one could list variations in air flow quantity, sources of evaporation, heat transfer from pump and compressed air columns and, particularly in the stope, variations in air flow patterns. Fluctuations arising from surface temperature variations should be amenable to calculation, and here one envisages figures relating the decay of temperature variation with distance to factors such as air flow quantity. Fluctuations resulting from changes in the mine are perhaps more difficult to tackle theoretically and the best approach could well be to analyse underground observations. In this connection, there is a good case to be made for the increased use of statistical methods in the analysis of underground temperature measurements, and it might be of value to look at current air-conditioning practice. Submerged arc furnaces (SAF) are used extensively in the production of ferrochrome, where charge material – consisting of mixtures of carbonaceous reductants, fluxes such as silica, and ore in the form of pellets – is fed through chutes into the vessel. The feed typically forms a thick bed or ‘burden’ of solid particulates above a bath of molten material below. This burden layer surrounds three electrodes, which are typically arranged in a triangular configuration in circular SAFs. A major challenge in the industry is the availability of sought-after reductants, volatile market conditions, and increasing electricity tariffs in South Africa. A good understanding of the physical properties of the raw materials in the charge is therefore of great value in order to best deal with the reductants available at any given time, and thereby maximising furnace throughput. This paper presents a study of the effects of different particle properties on particle flow behaviour relevant to SAF operations. Discrete element model (DEM) simulations were used to estimate the sensitivity of the particulate flow of beds of charge material to properties such as the coefficients of friction, particle shape and size, and others. The present study lays the groundwork for the development of full DEM models of the SAF that will greatly improve understanding of the flow of complex mixtures of solid particles in the submerged arc furnace, and how the relative physical properties of each component in the charge can influence electrical behaviour of the burden.

The Hishikari Gold Mine consists of epithermal vein type Au-Ag deposits, each of which has several veins standing almost in parallel each other and inclining 70 to 90 degrees. The veins have 1 to 3m widths and are extracted mainly by drifting and bench stoping with waste rock fill. The Hishikari has tried to optimise the stope dimensions by the Potvin’s Stability Graph Method, which is well known as an easy and effective tool to design appropriate stope dimensions. The method, however, has some limitations of application due to its simplicity so that it has been used only in limited cases. The authors developed a new numerical approach, based on 2D FEM solu-tion for the stability analysis. As a result, it has been possible to solve the Hishikari situation. The authors also introduce the concept of the design approach and compare the results obtained by us-ing the approach with the database of the Stability Graph Method for validation. La mine d’or Hishikari se compose de gisements d'Au-AG avec des types de filons épither-maux dont chacun a plusieurs veines qui sont presque parallèle les unes par rapport aux autres et sont inclinées de 70 à 90 degrés. Les veines ont de 1 à 3 m de largueur et elles sont principalement extraites en creusant et en abattant des bancs de roches encaissantes. Hishikari a essayé d’optimiser les dimensions du chantier d’exploitation avec la méthode de graphique de stabilité de Potvin, bien connue comme un outil facile et efficace pour avoir des dimensions de chantier d’exploitation appropriées. Hishikari hat versucht, die Abmessungen des Abbauorts durch das Potvins Stabilitätskurvenverfahren zu optimieren, das als einfaches und effizientes Mittel für die Erzielung angemessener Abmessungen des Abbauorts bekannt ist. Das Verfahren weist jedoch aufgrund seiner Einfachheit einige Anwendungsbeschränkungen auf, so dass es nur in einigen Fällen benutzt worden ist. Vor diesem Hintergrund haben die Autoren einen neuen numerischen Ansatz entwickelt, der hinsichtlich der Stabilitätsanalyse auf der 2D-FEM-Lösung beruht. Over the past couple of years, Anglo Platinum has made extensive use of technology within the core disciplines (geology, evaluation, survey, and planning) that collectively form part of mineral resource management (MRM). While these technologies were primarily developed to enable geology, evaluation, survey, and planning to carry out their daily tasks, with the main objective of supporting the mine?s production effort, they have also enhanced the disciplines? ability to produce the required outputs within the annual business planning cycle. Anglo Platinum has developed a very comprehensive business planning process, and these technologies play a vital role in enabling both the quality and quantity of inputs into the process, and also the value-add of the final product. This prompted a question regarding the practical application of the CADSMine software. If we changed our thinking in how we applied the software, would it be possible to further improve on the time taken to deliver a business plan? In changing the current planning approach, would we be able to further simplify the process? Is there a way to reduce the data generated in order to enhance the time taken to do reporting, as the CADSMine software is totally network dependent? Less data should equal faster reporting. This paper focuses on the practical application of the CADSMine software, and demonstrates the value-add to the business planning process that can be gained if the mine design methodology is changed from individual panels to bigger blocks representing a raise line.

"SynopsisSlime coating is one of the most common ways for serpentines to contaminate metallic mineral concentrates during traditional flotation of coarse sulphide particles. This could pose quite a complicated and challenging problem in the case of some types of low-grade and finely disseminated Cu-Ni ores bearing high serpentine contents. This is the case for the copper and nickel sulphides from the Yunnan Mine, China. Previous batch flotation tests of this ore resulted in satisfactory recoveries of 86.92% Cu, 54.92% Ni, and 74.73% Pt+Pd, and concentrate grades of 4.02% Cu, 3.24% Ni, and 76.61 g/t Pt+Pd. However, the MgO content in these concentrates was more than 19%. In the current study, microflotation tests and settling rate tests were introduced to investigate the effects of a combination of strong collectors (a 2:1 weight ratio of butyl xanthate and butyl ammonium dithophosphate) on entrainment of serpentines in metallic mineral concentrate, as well as visual observations of the concentrates in suspension using still photography. All test results indicated the presence of serpentines entrapped in the hydrophobic flocs that resulted from these collectors, even with the use of effective gangue depressants. These strong collectors are used to flocculate the ultra-fine sulphides by forming loose and ‘fluffy’ hydrophobic flocs. However, these hydrophobic flocs may also be able to load or entrap some serpentine slimes into the concentrate, and this entrained serpentine could be harder to remove by using depressants or intensified conditioning than serpentine slime coating on the particle surfaces.IntroductionSerpentine minerals, which have the generalized composition (Mg,Fe)3Si2O5(OH)4, can be easy to crush and grind due to their convoluted and bent layered structures. These serpentines can hinder the enrichment of some metallic minerals and dilute their concentrates by entrainment during flotation. The resulting high pulp viscosities, slime coatings, and high content of dissolved ions adversely affect the flotation recoveries of copper and nickel sulphides, and high levels of MgO entrained in the concentrates lead to heavy penalties from smelters. Since the quality of nickel flotation concentrate depends heavily on its MgO content (generally less than 6–7% for No.1 or 2 grade nickel concentrate according to the standard requirement from National Nonferrous Industry), reducing the entrainment of serpentine during flotation is becoming more and more pressing. Previous research has focused on the collectors and depressants that are commonly used in copper-nickel flotation, as well as their interaction mechanisms."

Optimum Coal Mine comprises numerous defunct, active, and future mining sections. The mine is primarily a large opencast coal mine; however, underground mining activities will be increasing steadily over the next five years. Opencast and underground mining activities have a significant impact on surface and groundwater resources. To ensure that the mine will be able to continue with its mining operations in the catchment, the extent of this impact requires that substantial intervention and mitigation measures need to be implemented to ensure the environmental integrity and economic use of the catchment's water resources. In developing a sustainable long-term mine water management strategy, numerous scenarios had to be analysed. The various scenarios are a combination of water and land management activities. The main components of the mine's integrated water management strategy include: ? Management of water recharge by continual and appropriate rehabilitation of disturbed land ? Beneficial re-use of impacted mine water for coal plant process water and mining operations ? Reclamation and desalination of remaining excess impacted mine water to potable standard. From the mine's long-term water balance, it is evident that the continued implementation of numerous water management actions is required to mitigate the water resources impact in a sustainable manner. In addition, the installation of a water reclamation plant at Optimum Coal Mine (15Ml/day) is a key step for the mine to achieve a zero impact target.

Dr T. F. Muller (Honorary President): "Mr President, gentlemen. May I congratulate the Institute on its 75th birthday, and your President on his comprehensive review of the Institute's 75 years. It is an interesting commentary on the affairs of the Institute that your President should refer to a speech made by a founder member 25 years ago on the occasion of your 50th Anniversary and then say there is no need to repeat what was given there, but that he would confine his remarks to bringing the Institute's history up to date. To me this suggests a remarkable continuity of thought and ideals-a welcome island of stability in an ever-changing world. One can somehow picture another future President, perhaps one of the younger and tougher members here today, doing the same thing in 25 years when you celebrate your centenary-and again someone doing the same in the year 2094 when your Institute is 200 years old! I hope they will recognise their debt to the early pioneers of the Institute gathered here today. In any event, this review of the fine achievements of the past 75 years is certain of an honoured place in the annals of the society. Here is a record of the onward march of technology in South Africa and a tribute to a long line of mining engineers, of chemists, metallurgists and geologists who made a greater contribution to the well-being and the prosperity of South Africans than South Africans generally are aware. Your Institute started off as a 'gold and cyanide club', peopled largely by chemists and metallurgists who made a signal contribution to the industry from the earliest times. Despite the addition to their ranks of ever-growing numbers of mining engineers, the metallurgist members have continued to make notable contributions. One recalls, for example, the manner in which they rose to the occasion to resolve the problems associated with the establishment of the uranium industry in this country. The creation of a major industry based on the existence of low grade uranium ores in the conglomerate reefs of our low grade goldfields is a classic example of the manner in which a new large industry can be rapidly created through the combined endeavours of all concerned. I noted with pleasure your remark, Mr President, that members of the Institute would like to keep up to date with recent progress in nuclear fuel matters and that members should be given the opportunity to study developments in their journal. I am sure that the National Institute of Metallurgy which conducts fuel research on behalf of the Atomic Energy Board and of the Uranium industry, and NUFCOR, which co-ordinates the uranium research programme, would be glad to co-operate if invited by the Institute to make periodical contributions to its journal. You have referred to the building up of our research organization and its dynamic approach to mining problems. I understand that the expenditure of the mineral industries on research exceeds one-third of the entire research expenditure of the private sector. South Africa is in the forefront of mining development and the focus of world attention is on the achievements of our scientists and mining engineers. We can look forward to continued advances in mining technology based on their vision and expertise. I share your disappointment, Mr President, that the Base Metals Division has ceased to exist; and that there is a resultant dearth of papers offered to the Institute on these important sections of mining and metallurgy. We are seeing some remarkable developments in the mining and beneficiation of base minerals, and it is in this area that I see the greatest potential for future expansion.
