The catalytic converter industry is composed largely of global multinational manufacturers who supply to vehicle manufacturers (original equipment manufacturers ? OEMs) from facilities strategically located internationally, including plants in South Africa. The South African catalytic converter production facilities were established at the request of the OEMs and commenced manufacture in the early 1990s. This near 100 per cent export focused industry exists in South Africa because of the incentives offered by the Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP), which ultimately provide the OEM with import duty rebates. The South African catalytic converter industry is a complex vertically-integrated supply chain with a local content in excess of 85 per cent, substantially more than any other exported automotive component. The industry remains one of the very few downstream manufacturing industries where South Africa has a significant global footprint. This is even more important when it is considered that this industry is the key end-user for two of South Africa?s most important mineral resources, namely platinum group metals (PGMs) and chromium, and is in an industry which will see massive global growth as the developing nations of the BRICs grow their auto industries. In over 15 years of existence in South Africa, the catalytic converter industry has achieved remarkable growth, averaging compound growth in the region of 14 per cent per annum. The industry is the highest contributor to automotive component export revenue. South Africa holds >8 per cent% of global PGM reserves. During 2011, South Africa supplied 59 per cent, 29 per cent, and 72 per cent of the global demand for platinum, palladium, and rhodium respectively, as well as over 50 per cent of the global chromium demand. Global autocatalyst production remains the largest consumer of PGMs, and South Africa alone beneficiated 15 per cent of locally mined PGMs in the production of catalytic converters ? all is converted from PGM sponge (powdered metal) into PGM solutions for coating onto catalysts. Beneficiation of PGMs also takes place via the production of jewellery and electronic goods; but compared to catalytic converters, this volume is negligible. The industry is also the largest consumer of locally produced stainless steel (>50 000 t/a), exceeding 38 per cent of local consumption. The industry is a substantial generator of highly skilled employment, with over 5 000 direct jobs (excluding OEMs and stainless steel manufacture) and an estimated more than 30 000 indirect jobs resulting from upstream and side-stream suppliers. The industry places a high focus on skills transfer and development, with all companies providing high-tech training and education both locally and overseas. The industry has invested in excess of R5 billion in plant, equipment, people development, and process development over the last 15 years to support transfer of production and new technologies to South Africa. This has resulted in significant skills development in the support industries as well as within the catalytic converter industry. The current projections for local PGM beneficiation via catalytic converters reflect a downward trend as a result of production being moved to other global locations due to uncertainty around changes to government incentive programmes. The industry is currently capacitated to support 23.7 million units per annum. During 2011 it utilized about 70 per cent of this capacity, but forecast projections suggest that this will be at 46 per cent of this level by 2016. At full capacity the industry would represent 19 per cent of global autocatalyst production compared with the current 13 per cent in 2011. The industry believes that there is potential to make South Africa the preferred location for catalytic converters worldwide, given suitable support from the mines and Government.

It is most appropriate that this work which is leading to a better understanding of the capabilities and efficiency of the human body under the arduous conditions encountered underground should be reported to this forum. In this way our members, who are actively engaged in the job of mining, can firstly learn something of this research and secondly, can, with their practical knowledge of conditions underground, contribute to what has been learnt and possibly pose new problems for our scientists in the laboratories. The scientist should always have the opportunity of subjecting his research to the scrutiny of people engaged in practical operations. By the very nature of our gold mines we are unfortunately heavily dependent on a large labour force and while mechanization has been introduced wherever feasible, we are likely to continue to be heavily dependent on this labour. In accepting this fact we can be proud in this country of what has been achieved, not only in obtaining the best efficiency from labour but in ensuring that their working conditions are reasonable and that their health and well-being are adequately cared for. When one visits our gold mines, one cannot help being impressed with what is being done to ensure that we have a satisfied, happy and healthy labour force. The Human Sciences Laboratory with its scientific approach has assisted greatly in promoting a better understanding of the problems associated with labour under the conditions experienced on our mines. After Dr Wyndham had presented the paper the President said: "Thank you Dr Wyndham for so ably describing the work associated with the acclimatization procedures on our gold mines. It has certainly been an eye-opener to those of us not familiar with this work and I believe it is very important that everyone and not only people in the gold mines should know about it. It is fortunate that all industries do not have the same arduous heat conditions experienced on our mines but other industries such as our chemical and metallurgical industries do have other problems relating to the adjustment of labour to the work situation. INTRODUCTION To prepare the reader adequately, reference should be made to the paper 'The Pioneering of Fully Mechanized Longwall Coal Mining in South Africa' by R. T. Naude and M. J. Deats, published in the February, 1967, edition of the Journal. At the time mechanized longwalling had been proved operationally feasible with encouraging results since its inception in South Africa in mid 1965. Subsequently, further top seam panels were successfully extracted with improved productivity and with some modification to equipment. In 1968, after an overseas visit by mine officials, equipment specific to suit local conditions was acquired and lower seam trials commenced. Despite initial obstacles and difficulties the first panel was successfully mined. Modification and improvements to equipment and techniques resulted in the second lower seam panel being extracted economically during 1969-1970 and with productivity exceeding even that of top seam faces. During extraction of the second lower seam panel, gradual and complete surface subsidence occurred over the panel without affecting face operations. Rock mechanics investigations had originally indicated some uncertainty regarding adverse dolerite sill behaviour which could have caused longwall mining to be hazardous. All such doubts have now been removed. RESUMÉ AS AT FEBRUARY, 1967 Mechanized longwalling was introduced in 1965 on an experimental basis in an effort to improve productivity in the newer area of the mine and to increase the quality of the comparatively dirty run of mine feed to the washing plant. In addition advantages could be predicted in the long term by better utilizing reserves of straight coking coal and increasing the life of the mine. The top seam unit was obtained on a rental basis and by the beginning of 1967, two panels, the first having a face length of 215 m, a panel length of 345 m, seam section of 1 219 mm, and the second the same face length, a panel length of 453 m and a seam section of 1 067 mm had been successfully longwalled. At this stage a best month of 24 602 metric tons with an average of 17 364 metric tons per full working month could be reported. Results were sufficiently encouraging for the company to exercise its right to acquire the equipment as its own asset and from 1967 onward, the unit has operated on this basis. From the point of view of rock mechanics, the dolerite sill over the first two panels was known to have 'bridged', only the material below the base of the sill having truly 'goafed'. No adverse pressure effects had significantly affected face operations except for two 'bumps' towards the end of operations in each panel. Gate road maintenance presented no problem. The strong inflows of water experienced on the first face were now known to be associated with an isolated water bearing fault plane and were not experienced on the second face. TOP SEAM EXPERIENCE - MAY, 1966, TO DATE Panel 2 (February, 1966, to November, 1966) The operations in panel 2 (see Fig. 1 for location of panels) continued uneventfully until the final month in this panel. At this stage, the chocks behaved most inconsistently often lowering under the weight of the canopies alone. Roof trouble became so severe that the unit was unable to produce adequately and blasting of chocks became a daily occurrence. Finally 24 m short of the planned limit it was decided that a complete overhaul was the only solution and the extraction operations commenced. At this time, the only fatal accident associated with longwalling occurred when a Non-White inadvertently fell into the panzer conveyor transfer point at the main gate. Some gate road difficulties in this panel were overcome by bolting tapes to the roof as decking and allowing them to pass over the gate chocks and collapse into the goaf. Two cribbed roof falls were also negotiated by the gate chocks at the face ends without undue difficulties. It was decided in the light of maintenance problems encountered on this face that the best solution would be to appoint a foreman solely in charge of face maintenance crews. This step has to a large extent contributed to success achieved subsequently. Panel 2-face length 213 m panel length 456 m cutting height 1 092 mm average monthly output 16 443 t best month 19 130 t Panel 3 (December, 1966, to June, 1967) By the end of 1966 results were sufficiently encouraging for the company to exercise its right to acquire the equipment. This was negotiated and the unit has operated as such to the present date. Prior to installation in panel 3, all face equipment was thoroughly overhauled underground and the chocks boost-tested to yield-load. The costs of overhauling, including almost complete hose replacement, were much higher than anticipated. Advice had been received that complete hose replacement was common practice after +/- 18 months' operation. Shortly after commencement of operations in panel 3 the chocks again failed as they had towards the end of panel 2. At this stage, the suppliers advised that the valve gear should have been repaired during the overhaul as the needle and seat seals could no longer be relied upon. This operation was impossible to carry out on the face and would have been e1ttremely time consuming. Fortunately a new type of valve gear was then available from the suppliers, termed the capsule-type valve, and a complete change over could be made on the face. Most of the Au and PGM ores in Russia are characterised by a thin mineral impregnation of noble metals in sulfide minerals, and a large variety of mineral forms that lead to high loss of precious metals with fine fractions during flotation. In modern flotation technology, the rational choice of reagents is one of the main trends for selective separation of minerals and effective metals recovery. New data on the selectivity of the thermo-sensitive polymer with specific functional groups (TMPPh) as a flocculant and collector of Au and Pt fine fractions are available. The selective modified collector (DEDTCm) for the recovery of Au and Pt from complex ores is discussed in this paper. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEAM), laser SIM and AFM microscopy, UV and IR spectroscopy were applied to study the adsorbed layer of new reagents on the mineral surface. Flotation tests of TMPPh on the gold-bearing ore of the Olimpiada deposit showed an increase in Au extraction and Au content in the concentrate of the rougher flotation. Using a combination of reagents TMPPh and ButX, the quality of the Au and Pt concentrates increased in 1.7 time with an increase in recovery up to 15 % compared with the traditional reagent mode. Testing of TMPPh polymers in flotation of Pt-Cu-Ni ore at Norilsk Nickel has shown the ability to obtain a concentrate with a higher Pt content. Recovery of platinum is 17% higher than recovery in an experiment without polymer. Application of DEDTCm helped to achieve higher technological parameters in flotation of lowgrade Rt-Cu-Ni ore. Compared to the basic mode Pt recovery was plus 13%, Pd recovery was plus 9% and the content of precious metals in the rougher flotation concentrate increased in 2,5 - 4 times. In order to remove heavy metal ions from a large volume of wastewater with a low ion concentration, ion flotation appears to be promisingly effective. In the ion flotation process, because of the high ion removal percentage, the amount of water recovery percentage is a very important factor which determines the process efficiency. However, ion flotation suffers from relatively high collector concentration to achieve the high removal percentage to the desired limit, which subsequently increases the water recovery. In this study, functionalised graphene oxide (FGO) was synthesised, using a chemical method in the ion flotation process, applied as a collector for increasing process efficiency by reducing the collector consumption and water recovery. The high ion removal was achieved with both collectors of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and FGO, while the water recovery with a collector of SDS was 3.4% higher than that with a collector of FGO. The results indicated that the FGO could be effectively used for high ion removal and low water recovery in the ion flotation process. The vertical stirring mill’s fine grinding equipment is affected by the operating conditions during the grinding process. The grinding media has a great influence on the energy consumption and particle size distribution. This paper investigates the fine grinding performance of nano-ceramic balls and steel balls of the same weight for magnetite by a wet grinding process in a vertical stirring mill, where 15 mm nano-ceramic balls and 12 mm steel balls are used as grinding media to carry out batch grinding tests. We have observed that the newly qualified particle content of the nano-ceramic balls is higher than steel balls of the same weight at the same specific energy. The reason may be the advantage of a greater surface area and volume filling rate with the nano-ceramic balls. Moreover, the specific energy of nanoceramic balls is less than steel balls of the same weight under the same grinding fineness. In addition, energy efficiency indicates that the nano-ceramic ball has a higher energy efficiency than a steel ball of the same weight. This is due to the light bulk density of nano-ceramic balls. The application of a nanoceramic ball in a vertical stirring mill will improve iron ore grinding performance. India is devoid of coking coal resources, which is a vital raw material for coke making. As a result it has to import about 80% coking coal for steel making. Indian National Steel Policy, 2017 has envisaged crude steel production around 300 million tonnes Mt) by the year 2030-31 and forecasts coking coal demand of 161 Mtpa (million tonnes per annum). One way of improving the indigenous resources is to study the performance of existing washeries and to improve the clean coal recovery by adopting suitable technology. A study was carried out, mainly to focus on the fine coal circuit of an existing coking coal washery, to generate the desired quality of clean coal. The operating coking coal washery being studied is presently feeding coal from nine different sources with varying feed ash contents. The coal fines varied in ash content ranging from 19.5% - 43.6%. For treating the coal fines, the washery has operated a spiral for the past few years. Performance studies were carried out, and it was found that the spiral is not efficient in recovering the cleans. Detailed investigations were carried out on the coal fines using flotation techniques, and it was found that to achieve a low ash clean coal, the froth flotation is a much better beneficiation option than a spiral, The studies showed that the recovery of clean coal through a spiral is 67.7% at ash content of 27.0%, while flotation tests showed a recovery of 68.1% at 16.5% ash content. With the continuous increase in ore mineralogical complexity coupled with decreasing head grades, there is a need for mining industries to process large tonnages of material to meet global metal demands. Smarter, cheaper techniques are required to better map ore mineralogical variations proceeding to pre-concentration (flotation) stages for higher performance and metal recoveries. This paper is aimed at briefly reviewing previous studies on different selected ore mineralogy, with the focus on their pulp chemistry, to identify relationships which aid quicker flotation feed variation monitoring. Very little published work exists linking pulp chemistry parameters to flotation feed mineralogical variation. A successful application implies maximising grades at higher metal recoveries and reducing the cost of reagent for a better performing flotation circuit. This paper is based on the Townlands Ore Replacement Project whereby the concept of conventional sinking of one large diameter shaft was declined and replaced with three smaller raise bored shafts. A wire line geophysical survey was done and the results indicated that a single shaft larger then 4 m diameter unsupported would not be suitable. The shafts were placed 28 meters apart measured from centre to centre. To ensure that the skin to skin pillars between the shafts remained regular and to minimise any deflection, the pilot holes were drilled with the Rotary Vertical Drilling System. The different shaft sinking methodologies are discussed explaining the risk associated with each method.

The Decar Nickel District is a greenfield discovery by FPX Nickel Corp., of nickel mineralisation located in central British Columbia (BC), Canada. The Baptiste deposit is part of the Decar Nickel District and is a unique deposit containing a nickel-iron alloy mineral called awaruite, with over 2-billion tonnes of inferred resource grading 0.12% Davis Tube Recoverable (DTR) nickel. This deposit represents a significant nickel resource. Awaruite is a high density and ferromagnetic mineral, which could be recovered, along with magnetite that is also present in the samples, using magnetic separation. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the properties of the awaruite and its metallurgical response. This information is imperative for the set-up of the variables involved in its concentration. The aim of this paper is to show and discuss the effect of magnetic field strength for the recovery of nickel from Baptiste deposit samples. Magnetic separation at bench and pilot scale with different magnetic field strengths is evaluated as a concentration method for awaruite. Mineralogical information is provided to support the results and also to briefly assess the variability of DTR nickel within the deposit. The Baptiste deposit is unique and will benefit from a sound scientific understanding of the process solution as well as other ongoing work. If successful, the outcome will lead to the development of a mine. With greater than 2-billion tonnes of inferred resource, the mine would represent a significant new source of nickel globally. Flotation reagents play a vital role in mineral flotation. In the past century, most studies focused on the modification of anion or cation collectors and the synergistic effect of mixed collectors, which have contributed to research. In this study, we reviewed brand-new reagents, metal-organic/inorganic complexes, with the functional group of metal ion, which are totally different from the traditional anion or cation collector and show absolute specificity for some minerals. For example, Pb-BHA complex collector was developed to realise the atmospheric flotation of scheelite due to the absolute specificity for calcium minerals. Calcium oleate collector was found to be the effective species in the flotation of calcium minerals, and has been employed to selectively separate fluorite from calcite. Selective adsorption of Al-Na2SiO3 polymer on calcite surfaces proved the self-assembly of H2SiO3 polymer using Al3+ had stronger selectively adsorption ability than Na2SiO3. Also that Fe3+-starch complex was a better depressant for iron minerals than caustic starch and contributed to a more efficient reverse flotation. In conclusion, metal ions are good templates for molecular assembly and can be used to control the structure of metal complexes and exhibit special properties, which provide possibilities for the design of new flotation agents. "This article is devoted to the introduction of a new technique of electrical resistivity data processing called residual resistivity (RR). We define RR as measured resistivity minus background resistivity. To determine the background resistivity, the data acquired from electrical resistivity measurements along a given survey line is evaluated, and then an equation is fitted to the data corresponding to a chosen measurement station as a function of current electrode spacing (or array length). The RR technique was applied to several synthetic models to compare the conventional resistivity inversion of each model with its RR-based inversion. A case study was carried out in a karstic area in Zarrinabad, Lorestan Province, western Iran, to detect the location and geometry of probable cavities by conventional resistivity inversion and RR-based inversion. The results showed that the anomalous zones are better highlighted in the RR-based inversion images in comparison with the conventional inversion images. In some cases, anomalies detected by the RR-based images were hidden in the conventional method. IntroductionThe geoelectrical resistivity method has been widely used since the early 20th century, and plays an important role in several fields such as groundwater and subsurface mineral exploration, geotechnical and environmental investigations, and archeological studies (Bayrak and Senel, 2012; Candansayar and Basokur, 2001; Fehdi et al., 2011; Hee et al., 2010; Osella et al., 2003; Wilkinson et al., 2010). The goal of geoelectrical resistivity surveys is to determine the distribution of subsurface resistivity by measuring the current-potential difference on the ground surface (Aizebeokhai et al., 2010). In the electrical resistivity method, an electrical current is injected into the ground by two electrodes, called current electrodes (AB), and the potential difference is measured between another pair of electrodes, the potential electrodes (MN). Several methods of interpretation are available for application to electrical resistivity data, the simplest being the graphical interpretation of the apparent electrical resistivity pseudo-sections along each survey line. A second method, electrical resistivity inversion, has been developed to create relatively accurate two- and threedimensional computational resistivity models of subsurface sections (Loke and Barker, 1996; Niwas and Mehrotra, 1997; Nordiana et al., 2014; Oldenburg and Li, 1994; Papadopoulos et al., 2009; Yilmaz and Narman, 2014). The BIOX® process was developed for the biological pre-treatment of refractory gold ores and concentrates ahead of conventional cyanide leach gold recovery. Rights to the process are currently with BIOMIN Technologies SA, a subsidiary of Gold Fields Limited. There are currently eight operating installations worldwide employing the process on a commercial scale. EKATO is a company specializing in developing new or optimizing existing mixing applications. EKATO has acquired a vast amount of expertise in agitation over its 75 year history. In a joint research project the reactors of the BIOX® process were characterized from the aspect of their mixing performance. BIOMIN is constantly testing new mixing solutions and reviewing potential vendors to increase the efficiency of the BIOX® process. EKATO?s intention was to qualify as an approved vendor for supplying agitation equipment to the BIOX® process. A two step approach was planned: In phase one of the project EKATO would develop an alternative agitation solution to the established option, exhibiting at least similar performance levels. In phase two potential possibilities to improve the overall design would be developed. This paper focuses on phase one and addresses the systematic approach applied by EKATO in characterizing the mixing processes. Mixing tasks were assessed individually applying basic theory and scale-up and -down rules to the individual tasks. Testing with model systems was done at the EKATO technology center in Schopfheim, Germany, on scales of 50 liters and 1 m³. The results showed that the ISOJET-B impeller design showed promising performance under BIOX® reactor conditions. Scale-up with the ISOJET-B was done in order to apply it in the 21 m³ live volume test reactor at Fairview mine in South Africa. At Fairview tests were performed using model systems and eventually under real plant conditions with BIOX® slurries. The results were a success and confirmed that the scale-up factors determined during the testing at EKATO?s technology center could be substantiated in the ?model scale? 25 m³ reactor. Testing under the actual process conditions showed that all design parameters were within the desired range to be considered an excellent leaching performance. This successful joint development shows the importance of a close cooperation of technology licensors or end-users and equipment suppliers. It is vital for understanding all factors influencing the mixing performance of processes. Exercises such as this will provide equipment suppliers and plant operators more confidence in managing further scale ups at ever larger engineered plants.

The efficiency of high capacity SAG mills which consume large amounts of energy depends on the grinding and slurry discharge systems. A 9.7 m × 4.8 m SAG mill with radial pulp lifters is used at the Sarcheshmeh copper complex grinding circuit. The process audit indicated that the pulp discharge system was not efficient, judging by the amount of slurry flow back and carry over. These events limited the discharge rate and increased the wear rate of the lifters and grates. With the objective of finding a new design for pulp lifters, a 3D DEM software (KMPCDEM ©), along with the plant operational data and photographic evidence was used. The KMPCDEM © software was used to compare the efficiency of the radial and curved pulp lifter design based on the material flow. The slurry flow was analysed in terms of ease of discharge and lifter wear rate. It was found that changing the radial pulp lifters to curved pulp lifters could improve the discharge efficiency,and decrease wear rate of the pulp lifter in particular at the base of the pulp lifters. The simulation results showed that if curved lifters with a radius of 0.3×mill radius are used, the amount of slurry flow back and carry over will be negligible. It is predicted that by installing the curved pulp lifters, the capacity of the mill increases by 10% and the pulp lifter service life improves by at least 20%. To optimize the flotation of Ca-minerals, their separation contrasts were investigated by coupling experimental and theoretical techniques. We showed that they mainly rely on structural properties such as the Ca-Ca distance on their exposed surfaces but also on the ability to control the intermolecular interactions. An optimized composition of the carboxylic collector by calculating the collector-mineral and the intermolecular interactions was developed. Blending the saturated acids and non-ionic molecules with a fatty acid collector significantly increases the flotation selectivity between scheelite (CaWO4) and fluorite (CaF2). The theoretical results were validated by experimentally improving the separation contrast between Ca-minerals. After the tests of several depressants and collectors, the best depression of gangue Ca-minerals (fluorite, apatite and vezuvianite) was found by combining sodium silicate and sodium carbonate. Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, operates the Kidd Creek Mine, a 10000 tons per day base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different types of ore are mined and milled: copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous on-stream X-ray analysis. Recently this system was automated further by the addition of computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery by 1.1 per cent, zinc recovery by 1.4 per cent, and have reduced reagent costs by 16 per cent. Although not expected, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved slightly as well.

Main haulage roads play an important role in the performance of underground mines because of the cost of transportation of the extracted ore, equipment, and workers. During mine development, these roads are designed through manual tools or CAD-based software. However, the optimisation of these roads is still a complex problem due to some constraints such as minimum turning radius and maximum gradient. By utilising Dubins path theory, three elevation cases; namely low, medium and high are defined, considering gradient constraint as well as the minimum turning radius in a three-dimensional space. The shortest path between two points can then be found by the three-dimensional Dubins path algorithm with elevation constraint. As a further step, a three-dimensional Dubins path algorithm with elevation constraint for multiple points is also developed for multi-point cases. The effectiveness of these algorithms is tested through case studies in order to determine the optimal path between different points.
