Avoid accidents that can occur when applying belt dressing from an aerosol can, particularly when can pressure has dropped or when spraying against wind. Approach Use a garde-type sprayer. How It Works Commercially available garden-type sprayers can be used for applying conveyor belt dressing from 12 feet away, or more. Pressure is easily raised and maintained at about 50 psi. Most sprayers have a hand pump, but a battery-powered cordless model is also available. Garden-type sprayers are available in various sizes from 11/2 to 18 gallons, with the larger models wheel mounted. The 3-gallon model evaluated by the Bureau has a shoulder carrying strap, which gives additional safety advantages. Use of the strap frees both hands for climbing ladders or holding onto catwalk rails. When spraying, one hand can remain on a handhold to lessen the chances of touching a moving belt.

Stabiity analyses of fractured and faulted rock masses require delineation of the position, extent, and orientation of geologic discontinuities. The size of the smallest active discontinuity that may potentially be resolved using the spatial distribution of microseismic event locations is limited by the accuracy and precision of the location methods. At a hard-rock mine in the Coeur D'Alene mining district of northern Idaho, two data sets consisting of calibration blast signals from a known source site and origin time and microseismic event signals were recorded using a stope-wide accelerometer array. These seismic signals are used to quantify various sources of error in event location. Five factors influencing source location errors are examined in this US. Bureau of Mines study: (1) biases of the numerical source location techniques, (2) receiver array geometries, (3) uncertainties in receiver positions, (4) errors in picking arrival times, and (5) uncertainties in seismic velocity structure, including the effect of mine openings. In addition, synthetic data (accelerometer positions, travel-time picks and wave velocity) are used to determine the effect of known systematic and random errors on source location calculations. It is shown that the commonly accepted association of minimum travel-time residuals with the best location solution does not necessarily hold true when there is a systematic error in seismic velocity. Recommendations are made for increasing the accuracy and precision of locations of microseismic events detected under similar field conditions.

Compare the fire endurance of paneled steel stoppings with that of traditional concrete block Stoppings. Background Permanent stoppings or partitions arc used in mines to separate ventilation airways. The ability of stoppings to retain their structural integrity for a minimum length of time under lire conditions and prevent the spread of flame and toxic combustion products to an adjacent airway is critical. The success of miners in reaching safety during a fire depends largely on the presence of uncontaminated airways. Traditionally, permanent stoppings for coal mines are constructed of concrete blocks. Recently, paneled steel stoppings that satisfy many of the requirements demanded of permanent stoppings, such as incombustibility and strength, have been introduced. Their use also introduced concerns such as the ability of a steel stopping to maintain its ventilation control function when exposed to a fire and the potential that the fire could transmit enough heat through the stopping to ignite combustible materials on the unexposed side. To address these concerns, the Bureau of Mines investigated the fire endurance of galvanized steel and concrete block stoppings.

Provide respiratory protection for escape in a toxic or oxygen-deficient atmosphere with a device small and light enough to be belt-worn. Approach Combine a 10-minute, belt-worn respirator with a stored, larger, long-duration (60-minute) attachment that can be plugged into the 10-minute unit without removing the mouthpiece. How It Works The 10-minute device will be carried by the miner at all times, and the 60-minute canister or attachment will be stored near the miner. In the event of a disaster, the 10-minute device would be donned immediately. The miner would then proceed to the stored 60-minute unit and plug it into the 10-minute unit. For the 10-minute unit, a breathing circuit was developed in which air is passed through the KO2 bed twice per respiration. Provide low-cost fire protection for big bulldozers. Approach A fire protection system, previously used on mobile logging equipment and adapted to surface coal augers, has now been adapted for use on large mining bulldozers. How It Works Heat sensors mounted in the engine compartment and hydraulic hose areas detect the fire, usually before the operator does. This causes the system to automatically discharge A-B-C class dry chemical extinguisher through a fixed piping system. The system can also be manually activated from either the opera-tor's cab or ground level. Location of the principal components of the system are shown in the drawing The heat sensors of the sys-tem consist of bimetallic strip switches which operate at about 10000F temperature. Switch operation results in release of compressed gas from a small storage cylinder. The gas expands to blow the dry chemicals out of the nozzles, in a spray that lasts about 15 seconds. The compressed gas used is usually nitrogen, although carbon dioxide is also used.

Improve the safety of salt mine workers by providing a means for quickly identifying areas within the mine that?s how an increased potential for gas and salt outbursts. Approach Outbursts occur in salt mines when a high-pressure pocket of gas is intercepted during the mining process, resulting in a sudden and sometimes catastrophic expulsion of gas and salt. In one case, the amount of gas released through such an event caused an explosion that resulted in five fatalities. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has designed and developed a gas outburst prediction system that can quickly determine the potential instability of areas within rock salt mines. The determination is based on noise measurements obtained from samples of the salt as they are dissolved in water. This system improves upon technology currently available because it provides information in only a few minutes instead of in several days. In addition, present prediction systems are not only time consuming, but expensive because they require laboratory conditions and highly trained personnel to operate them and determine results.

The gravitational pressure gradient (GPG) in porous sandstone containing free gas was determined to define the proper GPG to use when calculating the rate of downdip flow of oil in the Sub-Scalez No, 1 sand, Elk Hills field, Naval Petroleum Reserve 1. The GPG was determined at several gas saturations using long, artificially consolidated sandstone models that were mounted vertically in some tests and horizontally, with rotation, in others. Also determined by laboratory and field tests were relative permeabilities, capillary pressure relations; critical gas saturation, water sensitivity, and depletion drive performance. The critical gas saturation in the models having an absolute permeability of 1 to 2 darcys was about 2 percent of pore volume. The GPG with the critcal gas saturation was that due to the weight of the gas-saturated oil. The GPG in the upper part of the models was reduced as gas saturation increased to a value considerably larger than the critical. The exact gas saturation at which the GPG became less than that due to the weight of the oil could not be determined but was estimated to be of the order of 10 percent of pore volume. Tests indicate that the rate of oil production is not permanently reduced by exposure of the sand to fresh water but that the rate of injection of fresh water will be considerably less than that to brine, Methods for determining the factors mentioned above are discussed.

The instrumentation specification in the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) report of March, 1970, set forth some rather general guidelines that the seismic surface system should follow. The fact that there was no comparable equipment in existence at that time, and the need to produce a system from presently available equipment, was spelled out in that document. The features that the system should include were listed, and included: • Quick and simple deployment • Portability • Battery-powered operation • All-weather operation • Computational simplicity and speed • High reliability and long shelf-life • Dual service for location and communication • Adaptability to widely varying seismic velocities. topography, and geologic structures • Minimum maintenance • Capability of continuous operation for extended periods, and • Reasonable cost Since that report, there has been a substantial amount of field work addressing the trapped miner detection and location problem carried out by Westinghouse Corporation under contract with the Bureau of Mines. Two complete surface systems have been designed, built, and field tested and substantial documentation has been produced on the mine environment and background noise using these systems. These systems, built from off-the-shelf equipment, have been designed with maximum flexibility in mind in order to explore what con¬figuration a field unit should have.

Reduce the number of conveyor-related accidents in the mining industry by providing recommendations for effective operation of conveyor belt cleaning systems. The Problem Troughed belt conveyors provide effective, and efficient materials transport and their use has increased throughout the mining industry. Carryback, the spillage that accumulates under the belt, is a problem even with belt cleaning systems installed. Mining personnel are exposed to safety and health hazard; as they attempt to clean up this spillage. Approach To investigate the influence of metal-segmented-blade belt cleaners on the amount of carryback spillage, the. Bureau identified and tested the following parameters: (1) amount of pressure applied to the cleaner blades, (2) friction between the blades and conveyor belt, and (3) wear rates of different metal blades. The test parameters were quantified by recording the amount of carryback material passing the metal cleaner blade, and the weight loss of the blades. The data collected were used to identify the following critic d operational parameters of a segmented-blade conveyor cleaner system: (1) the existence of an optimal operating pressure for the conveyor and cleaning systems and (2) elimination of recessed patterns on the working side of the conveyor belt.

Control dust generated during overburden drilling at surface coal mines using either wet suppression or dry collection systems. Approach For the wet suppression systems, a range of water flow rates was tested over a number of holes. Each hole was drilled at a specific and constant flow rate. A recording flow meter was mounted in the water line near the control system pump. For the dry collection systems, each drill was tested with the front of the shroud set at different heights above the ground. Because of the irregularity of the ground surface, all height measurements were taken at the front of the shroud. Background Wet drilling systems consist of a water tank mounted on the drill from which water is pumped into the downhole air line. The water droplets in the bail air conglomerate dust particles as they travel up the the annular space of the drilled hole, thus controlling dust as the air bails the cuttings from the hole.

Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for AN-FO haulers. Approach An automatic fire sensing and suppression system for AN-FO haulers was developed and on-vehicle tested. How It Works The system works in two ways to protect personnel from dangerous and unpredictable AN-FO fires. First the system senses and suppresses fires on the truck before they spread to the AN-FO in the bunker. This design was chosen because AN-FO truck fires generally start when combustible liquids (such as diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid or lubricating oils) are ignited by hot surfaces mainly on three areas: the engine, the transmission or the power take-off. These fires are quickly sensed by a linear temperature sensor strung throughout these three areas. The system then warns the operator and automatically suppresses the fire by discharging 30 pounds of multipurpose dry chemical extinguishing agent through a network of fixed hoses and nozzles. Second, this system includes six spot thermal sensors mounted inside the bunker on the truck to monitor the AN-FO temperature in case a fire does spread to the bunker area. In this report, the Bureau of Mines presents a theoretical solution for the stresses and displacements in an infinite elastic plate containing a circular hole the boundary of which is loaded by applied radial stresses over four separated arcs. The problem solved is a two-dimensional approximation of the stresses and displacements developed by a large tunnel-boring machine anchored in a circular tunnel. Analysis of the solution shows that the tangential tensile stresses induced on the boundary of the circular opening can be minimized in the roof and maximized in the floor of the opening by proper spacing and loading of the four arcs.

Rank the dust knockdown (airborne capture) ability of six different types of water spray nozzles, Approach A fixed quantity of dust is released into a large, closed chamber in a laboratory. Water sprays are turned on inside the chamber and their effectiveness on the dust cloud is evaluated from the rate at which the dust disappears. This method better simulates dust suppression underground than methods tried earlier. The results of the laboratory test were confirmed by conducting tests on a full-scale mod-el continuous miner face where dust levels were measured in the return airway. Results of the Closed Chamber Tests The graph indicates that atomizing nozzles provide the best use of water for dust scrubbing. However, use of these nozzles is limited by their susceptibility to damage and clogging. Hollow-cone nozzles perform almost as well as atomizing nozzles. Test results also indicate that full-cone, venturi-assisted, and flat-fan spray cones are about two-thirds as effective as hollow-cone nozzles. The least effective were venturi nozzles designed for moving air. The most significant advantage of hollow-cone nozzles over other nozzles tested is reduced clogging due to larger orifice size. The hollow-cone nozzle used in the test and depicted by the graph was type BD-3 manufactured by Spraying Systems Co., Wheaton, IL. This nozzle is already used on many continuous miners. One of the most difficult and longstanding engineering problems associated with coal mining is the catastrophic failure phenomenon known as coal mine bursts (known in the United States as bumps). For more than 70 years, researchers and practitioners have attempted to determine whether this destruction observed underground is caused by stress conditions within the coal pillar or from distant seismic sources in the mine roof and floor strata. The role of confinement and the extent of failure in solid pillars and panels have also proven difficult to define. These are important issues, since control solutions need to be based on a fundamental understanding of the problem. Obsenations by U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers over the last decade have helped to clarify certain aspects of these issues. Microseismic sensors and geomechanic field measurements have located areas of excess energy release, identified stress conditions in coalbeds close to failure, and recorded the response of mine structures prone to bursts. In the present study, data available for a range of U.S. bursts were considered in an effort to evaluate both common and distinctive features. Although the attempt revealed little commonality, encouraging results were produced by categorizing coal bursts by source mechanisms. When a coal burst is thus categorized, differences in environmental factors-such as geology, stress fields, and mining methods-are highlighted, and viable control strategies are readily recognized.

Subsidence data gathered by the U.S. Bureau of Mines over a series of longwall panels in the Pittsburgh Coalbed were studied to obtain insight as to the role of time in the subsidence process. It was found that subsidence began essentially with undermining and was completed within 1 year. The progress of the subsidence was dependent upon location above the panel. Subsidence in the central area of the subsidence trough, where subsidence is the greatest, was about 90 pct complete by the time the face had progressed a distance equal to one overburden thickness beyond a particular surface point. For a point over the rib of the longwall panel, the subsidence was only about 60 pct complete at this time. Data from three other sites in the northern Appalachian Coal Basin were analyzed to determine if an anomaly or the true characteristics of the subsidence process had been observed. All sites behaved similarly in the central portion of the subsidence trough. However, the subsidence of points over and adjacent to the ribs of the longwall panels was site specific. The fact that movement across the width of the panel was not uniform should be taken into account in assessing damages or the potential for damages resulting from mining-induced subsidence.

Green River oil shale previously extracted by benzene was heated at 150°, 200°, 250°, 300°, and 350° C for 0.5 to 360 days to determine the rate at which kerogen degrades to thermal products, the types of thermal products formed, and the effect of prolonged low-temperature heating (preheating) upon subsequent assay yields. Thermal decomposition of kerogen at 150° to 350° C is treated as a first-order reaction. The specific reaction rate for kerogen decomposition increases from 2.2 X 10-4 per day at 150° C to 2.0 X 10-1 per day at 350° C. The calculated kerogen activation energy is 19 kcal. Variations in the rate of formation of individual type components of the pyrolytic products were found. Carbon balances show an increase in the amount of kerogen converted to bitumen and oil (from assay of preheated oil shale) as the temperature of preheating increased from 150° to 350° C. Total product from shale preheated at temperatures of 150° and 200° C gave less than 100 percent of Fischer assay yields while the total products from shale preheated at temperatures of 250° to 350° C gave greater than 100 percent of Fischer assay yields.

APPENDIX A - PNEUMATIC TRANSPORT OF FLY ASH 1. Introduction Two types of pneumatic transport of fly ash are critical to the success of (1) Transport of fly ash from the fly ash truck to the entrance to the borehole. Depending on the surface topography, this may be horizontal, decential and ascential. (2) Vertical downflow of fly ash through the borehole. All fly ash trucks have limited pressure with which they can pump the fly ash. Thus, the pressure drop in the fly ash hose will define the maximum length for pumping and consequently the maximum distance that the fly ash truck can be parked from the auxiliary blower. The same relationships describe the flow of the dilute fly ash-air mixture produced by mixing with the auxiliary air from the blower and thus define the selection of the pipe diameter. These are im¬portant considerations in the proper selection of the location of the passages to be sealed and the type of surface preparation required. The flow characteristics of fly ash down the borehole determine the selection of the minimum borehole diameter and the blower pressure. This appendix presents theoretical analyses of these flow regimes and summarizes the limited experimental data obtained during the field tests at Grant Town, described in Section 8.4. The analysis for the borehole flow is presented first as it is of greater interest to the program. This is followed by a discussion of the horizontal flow.

Metal production rates of 42 to 45 tons per day were obtained with hollow-core anthracite briquets in an experimental blast furnace. Tuyere pressures were about the same for both coke and briquet operations, but from 150 to 175 pounds more of briquets were required per ton of metal than were needed with coke. Furnace operations were comparatively smooth, furnace hanging occurring less often than in previous tests with anthracite briquets. Dust production was substantially higher than with coke, however, and metal quality could not be controlled by corrective burdening and moisture control.

Economic growth in Cameroon was restricted during 1987 owing to a decrease in oil prices during 1986 and the falling value of the U.S. dollar in 1987. The yearly budget reflected a significant drop in revenues and expenditures. Taxes on imports and some exports were increased to raise revenue. The shortage of revenue and the lack of liquidity had restricted the Government's operation and investment programs. External public debt reached an estimated $3.2 billion2 representing 20.8% of the estimated gross domestic product (GDP) of $12.3 billion. The Government operated at an 8.7% deficit in 1987. The GDP growth rate had fallen to 0.6% in 1987 and was projected to remain at that level in 1988. Economic planning was managed through a series of 5-year plans. The country was under the sixth 5-year plan, which would end in 1991. The plan stressed balanced development as one method to achieve the desired results. Sources of revenue for the year included direct and allied taxes (31.2%). customs collections (31.0%), and oil royalties (28.0%). The oil royalties in 1987 represented a larger part of the budget than in 1986. In January 1987, eight African oil exporting countries, including Cameroon, formed the African Petroleum Producers' Association (APPA). The eight countries represented about 80% of the total African oil production of 5.2 million barrels per day in 1987. Cameroon produced approximately 3% of total APPA oil production. Cameroon produced approximately 68.5 million barrels of crude oil in 1987, slightly less than that produced in 1986. Earnings also fell in 1987, not only from falling production, but also from declining oil prices and the fall in value of the U.S. dollar on world markets. Oil had been the main stimulus of Cameroon's growth throughout the past decade, and a key generator of export revenues and financial resources for the economy.
