The spillage that accumulates under conveyor belt lines presents a possible fire and explosion hazard fomiinqjetsoruiel, especially to those who must clean up the spillage. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to reduce this hazard by identifying and investigating the parameters affecting the efficiency of conveyor belt cleaning. The amount of material carried back under the conveyor and the wear rates of metal cleaning blades decreased with increasing blade-to-belt pressure to a limiting value, after which the carryback and wear rates remained essentially constant. The optimum blade-to-belt pressure was found to be 11 to 14 psi for the research conveyor system. Greater pressures increased the blade-belt friction without improving either cleaning or blade life. The modes of blade wear were three-body abrasion and slurry erosion caused by the sand-lime test mixture. Wear rates were reduced by increasing the metal hardness, opti-mizing the pressure, and removing conveyor belt imperfections. Corrosion was not observed to affect the wear of various steels in tests of less than 34 h. The results of this study should allow mine operators to run their conveyors under conditions that will maximize cleaning and minimize equipment wear.

In recent years the interest in rare-earth compounds as refractory materials has exceeded the available literature on the subject. While some basic properties, such as density and melting point, of the more readily available rare-earth compounds have been reported in the literature, relatively few papers can be found that deal comprehensively and primarily with high-temperature refractory properties and applications of rare-earth oxides, carbides, sulfides, and nitrides. Therefore, this bibliography has been pre-pared for the use of the ceramic industry as a guide for locating and utilizing the scattered and frequently fragmentary information available. The term "rare earths", as applied in the literature search for this bibliography, is understood to include the following elements: cerium, dysprosium, erbium, europium, gadolinium, holmium, lanthanum, lutetium, neodymium, praseodymium, samarium, terbium, thorium, thulium, uranium, and ytterbium. (On the periodic chart, these elements appear as numbers 57 through 60, 62 through 71, 90, and 92.) It is emphasized that many of the abstracts included are from papers in which the rare-earth compound or compounds are treated along with several other ceramic materials, are mentioned only secondarily, with primary interest placed on a more commonly used refractory material, or are used as part of a mixture of materials formed experimentally and reported on in the paper. As the better known rare-earth materials, such as the oxides of uranium, thorium, and cerium, appear more frequently in the literature, they also appear more frequently in this collection. Articles abstracted include only information on the basic properties that are of interest to the refractories investigator. References to crystal lattices and related topics are generally excluded from this publication. The temperature 1,500° C. has been set arbitrarily as the lower limit for reported data on thermal properties. However, because of the scarcity of information, some reports are included in which data are limited to those obtained at lower temperatures. Many of the articles abstracted include lists of references that will be of additional assistance in pursuing specific lines of investigation.

Accelerometers and pressure transducers, mounted in suspension components, can be used to monitor the ride of haulage trucks. Presently, it is difficult to tell what caused a jolt to the truck using either pressure or acceleration data alone. When information from a global positioning system (GPS) is recorded at the same time as shock pressures or acceleration data, the exact location of an event can be determined. Mine management can then determine what caused the jolt to the truck. This research is part of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) project called "Engineering controls for reduction of jolting/jarring injuries in surface mines." NIOSH is investigating how the work environment of haulage truck drivers can be improved. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) notes that, between 1986 and 1995, 60% of the back injuries were to haulage truck drivers in metal/nonmetal surface mining. Personnel from Phelps Dodge suggested that combining acceleration data with information obtained from a GPS could generate results with a variety of uses. Therefore, researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) began investigating how to tie acceleration and GPS data together. It was originally thought that this tool would be used primarily for road and truck maintenance. However, as research progressed, it became apparent that it would also be useful in providing feedback about equipment operations and identifying unusual causes of jolting. Experimental approach Available components that function well by themselves were linked for the purpose of proof of concept. Using a Modular Mining Systems (MMS) product called Vital Signs, SRL researchers took an Aero-Marine Products (AMP) acceleration recorder and hardwired it to MMS Dispatch equipment already installed on a truck. AMP is one of several manufacturers of acceleration recorders frequently used to monitor freight during shipping. MMS Dispatch is used for production accounting and truck dispatching and uses GPS tracking. Through Vital Signs, an analog or digital alarm signal can be recorded. Steve Rhoades, of MMS, wrote unique code that links the Vitals Signs data and GPS location and stores this data in an ASCII log file. SRL researchers installed the equipment in a Caterpillar 793 haul truck. The result was a working prototype. Figures 1 and 2 show the instrument installation in the truck. One aspect of a program to improve the chances of survival following coal mine disasters is the development of a communications sys tem which will allow surviving miners to make their circumstances known to rescue teams. At present, it appears that an electromagnetic system may be most practical. The development and design of an effective electromagnetic communications link for signalling between mine workings and the surface requires knowledge of pertinent physical properties of the rocks overlying the mine workings and the characteristics of the ambient noise against which a communications signal must be recognized. Knowledge of the overburden electrical transmission properties is useful not only for determining a practical operating transmitter frequency at a given mine, but also for ensuring the best possible electromagnetic coupling for routine or emergency communication purposes. Field studies of the electrical transmission properties of the overburden of coal mines in Colorado, Illinois, and Pennsylvania generally show that a relatively uniform and unimodal electrical conductivity distribution exists provided that the region has not been subject to considerable structural or metamorphic deformation such as that observed in the Gary District of West Virginia. Measurement s of ambient surf ace electromagnetic noise levels at several mines in Colorado, Illinois, and West Virginia were taken and analyzed and are presented in the form of amplitude histogram plots both as a function of frequency and time of day. These amplitude histograms may be used in conjunction with overburden resistivity data in implementing an uplink communications beacon system which will yield a specified signal- to-noise ratio at the surf ace. Numerous C .W. field transmission tests were made in various coal mining environments with use made of either a buried vertical-axis transmitting loop or a short insulated grounded current line. These transmission tests were made from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz in frequency and at several geographic surface receiving sites. The results of these field measurements show, in general, good agreement with theoretically calculated results. Since the produced surf ace magnetic field from a buried vertical-axis loop source or the produced surface horizontal electric field from a buried horizontal current line show better agreement with theoretical results, they could be used for beacon location system. One criterion would be in detecting the equatorial and polar null lines of the horizontal electric field component which is normal to the direction of emplacement of a buried transmitting line current source. A second criterion would be in the surface mapping of the maximum in the vertical magnetic field directly over a vertical-axis loop transmitter and the associated null is the vertical magnetic field at a horizontal offset distance which is about 1.4 times the depth of burial of the transmitter. Finally, a third criterion would lie in the surface mapping of the null in the horizontal magnetic field directly over the vertical-axis beacon and the associated maximum in the horizontal magnetic field at an offset distance from the transmitter axis of half the depth of burial of the loop transmitter. In mapping the vertical magnetic field over a buried vertical-axis loop transmitter, the size effect of the transmitter loop must be taken Into account when the separation distances between the transmitter and receiving sensor are less than ten times the effective radius of the source loop; increasing the size of the transmitting source relative to the source-receiver separation distance shifts the null in the vertical magnetic field to greater offsets. In mapping either the vertical or horizontal magnetic field over a buried vertical-axis loop transmitter, care should be exercised in ascertaining that measured nulls and maxima are along radials through the axis of the buried source loop. For the main part, coupling experiments show that ambient electromagnetic noise in coal mining districts is less of a problem above 1000 Hertz. But secondary and perhaps undesirable maxima and null phenomena (as well as penetration problems) would occur in many coal mine provinces in the behavior of the surface horizontal magnetic field (over a buried vertical-axis loop transmitter) if transmission frequencies as high as 10 kHertz were used.

Experiments were conducted al temperatures of 480° to 800° C. and hydrogen pressure of 6,000 p.s.i.g. to determine the effect of coal residence time on the conversion of a high-volatile bituminous C coal to liquid and gaseous products when using a semicontinuous apparatus designed fur rapid heating and cooling of reactants. The objective of the studies at high temperatures was to determine if appreciable quantities of coal could be converted to gaseous hydrocarbons and low-boiling liquid hydrocarbons. Experiments at lower temperatures were designed to indicate shifts in product distribution with respect to temperature and to learn more about the general mechanism of the reaction when using close control of coal residence time. One percent molybdenum, based on m.a.f. (moisture-and ash-free) coal, was used throughout this investigation. At 800° C., 6,000 p.s.i.g., and "zero" residence time) the yield of gaseous hydrocarbons was about 38 percent and the yield of oil about 4.5 percent, based on m.a.f. coal. With IS minutes residence time, under the same conditions, the yield of gaseous hydrocarbons was approximately 80 percent with no increase in yield of oil. Apparently at 800° C., and hydrogen pressure of 6,000 p.s.i.g. coal was rapidly carbonized to char with expulsion of volatiles. Char was then slowly hydrogenated to gaseous hydrocarbons without production of oil.

Most Japanese copper smelters are located in areas of concentrated industrial activity and high levels of atmospheric pollution. A review of unofficial sulfur dioxide emission control data from major Japanese smelters shows capture of 91 to 99.7 percent of the sulfur in the smelter feed. The bulk of Japanese smel ting capacity was constructed in the last 10 years. Six of the major sme lters use flash furnaces, and two use reverberatory furnaces. A prototype three-furnace continuous system is in use as a parallel train with reverberatory furnaces at one smelter. Most of the sulfur dioxide is manufactured into sulfuric acid. The remainder is captured by gas scrubbers that yield gypsum and sodium salts. Ready markets exist in Japan for the acid and other su lfur byproduc ts.

"As part of a Nation-wide program of the United States Government to develop natural resources, funds were made available to the Bureau of Mines for the investigation of the ""Reduction of Iron Ores by Solid and Gaseous Fuels."" These investigations are concerned with the direct production of iron from its ores without the use of a blast furnace. Many processes have been proposed for the low-temperature reduction of iron oxides, but few have been developed to commercial use. High-quality sponge iron is produced com-mercially only in Sweden.The cost of iron production depends in part on the grade of the ore and increases with decrease in grade. The substitution of cheap natural gas in a sponge-iron process for expensive coke in smelting in the blast fry pace would partly compensate for the use of low-grade ores. If a process can be developed in which inexpensive natural gas can be used as fuel and reducing agent, the large deposits of low-grade iron ore and the natural-gas resources of east Texas may be utilized in the commercial production of sponge iron.Sponge iron may possibly be used to supplement scrap iron, pig iron, or, in special instances, wrought iron. Sponge iron will vary but slightly in composition and will contain little or no nickel, cobalt, manganese, copper, and other allowying metals. It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain choice scrap iron of nonalloy composition. Pig iron contains 1.5 to 3.0 percent silicon and 3.0 to 4.5 percent carbon. Sponge iron generally contains less carbon than pig iron.The Madaras Steel Corp. in Longview, Tex., built a set commercial-scale sponge-iron plant which was intended to be operated in connection with a steel foundry. The process is based upon the reduction of preheated iron ore, with hot reducing gases under pulsating pressure. Although the Madaras Corp. had previously experimented with the production of sponge iron by reducing the ore with pure hydrogen, several attempts to use a re-formed natural gas as the reducing agent in this pilot plant were unsuccessful. The Bureau of Mines leased this plant and conducted an extensive investigation of the Madaras process on a semicommercial scale.The experiments were not entirely satisfactory, partly because of mechanical difficulties and partly because the reducing gas was not of the best quality. However, much information on the production of reducing gas by re-forming natural gas and on the reduction of iron ore with re-formed natural gas was obtained.The sponge iron produced contained approximately 0.1 percent phosphorus; and, after melting in an electric furnace, the iron contained approximately 0.15 percent phosphorus. The results of attempts to improve the ore by ore-dressing methods were not encouraging."

"The National Safety Competition conducted by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior for the promotion of safety in mines and quarries, has just been closed for seventeenth consecutive year. Enrollment covered more plants than in any previous contest. Moreover, a larger volume of employment was represented than in the contests of previous years, and several new plants were enrolled for the first time. Six safety trophies are awarded annually in these competitions one to the leading plant in each of six groups. An anthracite, mine in Pennsylvania, a bituminous-coal mine in West Virginia, a metal mine in Tennessee, a nonmetal mine in Virginia an open-cut mine in Minnesota, and a quarry in Alabama won the 1941 trophies.To be eligible to win a trophy, a mine or quarry must have had at least least 25 men working under ground or in the pit for not loss than 100 days. The number of man-hours worked must total 30,000 or more. Mines or quarries having no accidents during the year are rated according to the number of man-hours worked. If there are no plants with accident-free records, the mines and quarries in each of the six groups are rated according to their accident-severity rates; the plant having, the lowest rate is declared the winner.The Sentinls of safety trophies presented to the winning mines and quarries in the six groups were donated by the Explosives Engineer magazine to promote safety in the mineral industry. They are held by the winning companies for 1 year or until won by other mines and quarries."

A system to continuously measure the concentration of radon in mine ventilating air has been developed and tested in a uranium mine. In use, the air/radon mixture to be monitored is pumped through filters into a scintillation cell where nuclear decay of the radon produces flashes of light. These are electronically counted, giving a quantitative measure of the radon present. Air is continuously drawn from the mine atmosphere into the radon sensor box. This air sample passes through two filters into the detector cell as shown in the schematic diagram. A portion of the radon in the detector cell will experience nuclear decay, producing polomium 218 and an alpha particle. The alpha particles from the fraction that decays strike a zinc-sulfide coating on the inside wall of the cell and produce flashes of light. These enter a photo-multiplier tube which records each flash as an electrical pulse. An amplifier increases the voltage of each pulse, allowing electronic screening to remove noise and other undesirable pulses. The remaining pulses are counted by a conventional data acquisition system.

Important quantities of gold, silver, platinum-group metals, selenium, tellurium, and arsenic are recovered in the processing of copper concentrates. The objective of this Bureau of Mines study was to determine the occurrence of these elements in copper ores and to trace their distribution during subsequent processing steps. The study describes the important areas supplying concentrates, precipitates, and unrefined copper to the copper smelting and refining industry in a composite of the years 1971-74. The relative importance of these areas as a source of the respective byproducts is assessed. The lack of certain quantitative and assay data, recycling of dusts and slags, and the addition of scrap to the feed often complicates calculations and estimations of the byproducts in the smelter-refinery throughputs. Such volatile or low-boiling point elements as arsenic, selenium, and tellurium may be lost in gaseous and other emissions in various processing stages, or they may be concentrated in slags and residues for which samples were not available. The effects of antipollution legislation to improve control of sulfurous and other emissions that may affect recovery of certain byproducts was noted. A section on newer technology illustrating hydro-metallurgical techniques that may affect the recovery of minor metals is included.

The purpose of this effort was to investigate the feasibility of employing a piezoelectric transducer for seismic communications applications in mine environments. The transducer, a government furnished device incorporated a high Q, spring-mass resonator to load the air side of the piezoelectric crystal. The resonant frequency was seismic load dependent and fell in the range of 300 to 340 Hz. The effort included a mathematical analysis of the transducer, with corroborative laboratory tests, together with actual communications experiments performed first in an open-formation limestone quarry and finally in an operating iron mine. This work showed that the transducer could be coupled efficiently to hard, competent rock media with power conversion efficiencies of 70 to 80 percent (electrical to mechanical) in typical installations. In the iron mine, when radiating peak power was about 30 W (acoustical) in a gated pulse mode, signals were received at a distance of 760 ft through a massive rhyolite porphyry formation. This represents a 15% radiation efficiency with an input of 200 watts. Despite the high ambient noise level due to operating mine machinery, a signal-to-noise ratio of about 20 dB was achieved using a very narrow band filter to process the received signal, and a data rate of about two pulses/sec was demonstrated.

So far as is known , there is no complete bibliography on sampling, therefore , this one should be of value . In it are nearly eleven hundred references , some dating back 30 years , on sampling at mines , mills , smelters , power plants , pumping stations and refineries . For convenience , there are included a few references to methods for sampling such materials as leather belting in mills , salt impregnated soils , and mine waters . All the important technical journals , - including some in foreign countries- and engineering society publications , also mining and metallurgical text - books , have been studied for anything concerning sampling , and while it is not claimed that every important reference has been listed , the bibliography is fairly complete . The arrangement is alphabetical by authors ' names , and the references are numbered serially in the crder that they appear in the bibliography . Anonyous references are listed under the name of the journal in which they appear , and are numbered like the references bearing an author's name . Patents are grouped in their numerical order , without index nu.bers . Under the heading , " U.S. Bureau of Mines Publications " , are listed all publications of the bureau that deal with sampling . While the serial number is omitted , these same references , of course , have serial numbers where they appear in the list arranged alphabetically by authors .

This contract is concerned with the construction of a Time Resolved Audio Dosimeter System consisting of one readout unit and several dosimeter units. The Time Resolved Audio Dosimeter System was designed and developed by the Bureau of Mines with the purpose of this contract aimed at obtaining additional units for further field testing and evaluation. All construction was in accordance with the Bureau of Mines design and/or Bureau approved drawings produced during the course of this contract. This report contains a summary of the construction efforts, problems encountered, recommendations and all drawings produced under this contract.

As part of the Bureau of Mines program for conserving domestic mineral resources, a survey was made of the methods used for identifying scrap metals. Because of the large number of alloys currently being scrapped, correct identification of these materials is essential if they are to be recycled effectively. The methods and instruments used to identify scrap metals are described and evaluated. These include object recognition, color, density, magnetic testing, spark testing, chemical spot testing, thermoelectric measurements, eddy current measurements, and elemental analysis by chemical and instrumental methods. Other potential techniques are discussed also.

The present rapid growth of coal stripping in the United States is a curious reversal of the tendency of mining to proceed from outcrop to depth. A combination of technical and economic factors bas stimulated the use of stripping methods until today many million tons of coal We being recovered by open cuts from sites that an earlier generation of engineers would have passed by as not commercially mineable or, if workable at all, only by underground methods. The total quantity of bituminous coal and lignite mined in the United States by stripping in 1928, the latest year for which detailed figures are available, was 19,789,000 short tons. Of this, 71,000 tons came from small workings not equipped with power shovels and 587,000 tons from properties in which stripping and underground work were carried on at the same mine; but as neither of these types is representative of modern stripping practice, they will be omitted in the discussion that follows. The total from strip pits proper in 1928 was 19,131,000 tons, produced by 176 pits employing 385 steam or electric shovels.3 Figures by States are given in Table 1. Detailed statistics will be found in Economics of Strip Coal Mining; a study by O. E. Kiessling, to be published by the United States Bureau of Mines.

This study traces the development of the bucket-wheel excavator, points out the differences in the German- and American-type wheels, and gives the major design criteria and the advantages and disadvantages of bucket-wheel operations. A computer program, written in FORTRAN IV for use with an IBM 360 computer, simulates the operation of the digging components of a bucket-wheel excavator. By supplying certain mining dimensions, soil characteristics, and machine design specifications, this program will print out a time study of the various components of an operation, power calculations for the operation, and production data. This program, when combined with a truck, belt, or rail program, should be helpful in planning a complete mining system In material suitable for a bucket-wheel excavator operation.

This report presents a complete coverage of results from Bureau of Mines preliminary research and the field application of explosive fracturing techniques to prepare oil shale for in situ recovery of shale oil. Small-scale surface tests were conducted to determine the feasibility of using a nitroglycerin-base explosive for creating rock fractures. Prior to underground testing, surface and near-surface tests with liquid explosives showed that explosions in sheetlike layers simulating underground fractures would propagate effectively. Successful surface experiments were conducted using layers of explosive placed between glass plates and explosive-saturated sand confined in small-diameter metal tubes. The tests in glass-plate reservoirs and metal tubes demonstrated that nitroglycerin would detonate and the explosion would propagate in cracks as thin as 1/32 inch and through distances up to 12 feet. In a shallow field test, nitroglycerin was detonated in a vertical crack in limestone and produced extensive fracturing. Explosive fracturing tests were performed in oil shale formations on seven sites near Rock Springs, Wyo. The procedures included (1) displacing and detonating nitroglycerin in natural or hydraulically induced fracture systems; (2) detonating nitroglycerin in wellbore shots; (3) displacing and detonating nitroglycerin in induced fractures followed by wellbore shots using pelletized TNT; and (4) detonating wellbore charges using pelletized TNT. The research on oil shale formations demonstrated that nitroglycerin displaced in a natural or hydraulically induced fracture would detonate, and the explosion would propagate through the explosive-filled fracture. Shooting a pattern of wells in oil shale at 100-foot depth with wellbore charges of pelletized TNT developed a satisfactory interwell fragmented zone. Tests performed on other sites at depths to 385 feet caused fragmentation of rock around the wellbore and provided interwell communication. Fourteen methods used to evaluate the extent and degree of fragmentation in the explosive fractured oil shale are discussed.

Shafts into coalbeds usually produce the most methane, so the information in this chapter applies primarily to shafts at coal mines. Nevertheless, much of the information is relevant for noncoal mines that have methane in the mine or in the overlying strata. Shafts excavated by conventional means are ventilated with a fan on the surface connected to ductwork that extends down into the shaft (Figure 9–1). Shafts into coalbeds should have ventilation systems designed to handle the higher gas flows to be expected as the shaft excavation passes through any over-lying gas-containing strata and nears the coal-bed to be mined. U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine mineral resources and resource potential in and adjacent to the North fork Smith RARE II study area. Most mineral resources identified in this area are in laterites, highly-weathered residual soil zones. In the RARE II area, resources of nickel, cobalt, chromium, and magnesium were identified at 15 laterite properties and chromium resources at one chromite mine. Other commodities include copper, gold, silver, and mercury (fig. 1). Approximately 1,100 lode and 1,200 placer claims have been located in or adjacent to the area. Most placer claims are for literites. There are no patented claims or mineral leases. Forty laterite deposits on 15 ,properties within the RARE II area (fig. 2) contain about 16 million tons of identified marginal reserves and subeconomic resources containing nickel, cobalt, chromium, an magnesium (table 1). Most deposits have keen explored and are currently claimed. California Nickel Corporation is developing laterites on Gasguet Mountain, within and adjacent to the southeastern and western parts of the study area. If this project proceeds to production, a laterite processing plant on Gasquet Mountain would enhance the minability of other deposits in the study area. The Climax, PFM, DF, and Stone Corral properties (fig. 1, nos. 1, 6, 9, and 23) have deposits of sufficient tonnage and grade to attract mining interest; resources at these properties are in and adjacent to the RARE II area.
