"IntroductionThe accumulation of gummy and resinous deposits in consumers' gas meters began to assume serious proportions about 1917. As the trouble developed and spread in the years following, it manifested itself in several ways, which ultimately began to the expressible in distinctly economic terms, more specifically in terms of costs; in 1922 an organized and fundamentally based investigation of this trouble was begun. In an earlier paper*** a short statement of the occurrence and costs of the deposition was given and at the same time an analysis of the problem, as well as well as a general plan of attack, was presented. That plan included two general phases, first, a chemical study of typical was 1 quarry or 2 cosinous content , mauformly consituents, rmln and selected subjects; and secondly, a comparative survey of plants affected and sufficient therewith, attention being paid to construction, operation, meter conditions and related data. The Bureau of Mines has demonstrated a hydrometallurgical method to separate chromium from other metals in a variety of surface-finishing wastes by precipitation with benzoate ion. The resulting chromium salt may then be converted to the hydroxide, and the benzoate may be recycled. Chromium recoveries of 92 to 100 pct are obtained.

"In presenting this list of permissible explosives and blasting devices, the Bureau of Mines desires to call attention to pages 20 and 25 outlining the conditions in use under which, and only under which, the explosive or blasting device is permissible.In view of a recent publication recounting trade practice favoring the use of a blasting device without stemming, particular emphasis is placed upon condition 4 on page 20 and condition 2 on page 25. The thermodynamic properties of synthetic acmite, NaFe3+Si206, were determined by the Bureau of Mines. The enthalpy of formation was determined by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The values of the standard enthalpy of formation at 298.15 K, ?Hf°298.15, from the elements and from the oxides, ?H°298.15, are ?Hf°298.15 = -615.87 ±0.71 kcal/mole, ?H°298.15 (from oxides) = -32.08 ±0.53 kcal/mole. Various experimental data were combined with other data from the literature to calculate all the related thermodynamic properties in the range of 298 to 1,263 K. The standard Gibbs energy of formation is ?Gf°298.15 = -575.8 kcal/mole.

PART A. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT – GENERAL Paragraph 1. Electrical Equipment; Examination. All electric equipment shall be examined, tested, and properly main¬tained by a qualified person to assure safe operating conditions. The examinations and tests shall be performed at intervals not exceeding six (6) months unless otherwise specified in Parts A, B, C, D, and E. When a potentially dangerous condition is found on electric equipment, such equipment shall be removed from service until such condition is corrected. A record of such examinations shall be kept and made available to an authorized representative of the Secretary and to the authorized repre¬sentative of the miners in such mine. Each item of major equipment, in¬cluding substations, switchgear, load centers, and so forth except powered hand tools, shall be recorded separately. The record of such examination shall include all dangerous conditions found, corrective action taken, and name of examiner, and shall be signed by the person responsible for main¬taining the equipment in safe operating condition, who shall also be a qualified person. Paragraph 2. Electrical Work; Qualified Personnel. No electrical work shall be performed on electrical distribution circuits or equipment, except by a qualified person or by a person trained to perform electrical work and to maintain electrical equipment under the direct supervision of a qualified person. Disconnecting devices shall be locked out and prominently tagged by the persons who perform such work, except that in cases where locking out is not possible, such devices shall be opened and prominently tagged by such persons. "INTRODUCTIONRecent investigations at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City indicate that metallurgists have given little attention to the occurrence of jarosite minerals in the oxidized ores of lead and silver. These investigations have also emphasized the importance of knowing when these minerals occur in the oxidized ores, especially those containing lead, silver, and gold, as their presence is a material factor in selecting a suitable kind of treatment. Since the question of the occurrence of jarosites in oxidized ores has come to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, investigation has indicated that plumbojarosite and argentojarosite are quite common. These two minerals appear to be widely distributed and probably escaped recognition by persons who had attempted to treat certain oxidized lead ores in which the jarosite minerals represented a material portion of the metal content.Consideration of the physical characteristics of the jarosites also indicates that in many cases failure to treat some of the oxidized lead ores with success has been directly due to the fact that the greater portion of their lead and silver content was present as plumbojarosite and argentojarosite. The data and the description of these minerals given in the body of this paper indi¬cate that attempts to recover lead and silver from ores in which appreciable amounts of the metals occur as plumbojarosite and argentojaeosite would be unsuccessful if confined to gravity methods of concentration. There are un-doubtedly considerable tonnages of oxidized lead ores in the various mining regions of this and other countries, and it is quite probable that in some of these ores the metal content of lead and silver may be largely anglesite (lead sulphate) and cerussite (lead carbonate) but that they will also contain cerargyrite (silver chloride), argentojarosite, and plumbojarosite. The treatment of such ores therefore presents an important problem, since a product is discarded from ores from which the recoveries of lead and silver have been below 70 per cent which is probably too low-grade to warrant aftertreatment by any process now in use."

As a part of a program to promote conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum resources, Bureau of Mines engineers are studying secondary oil-recovery projects in the United States. Published reports that set forth the pertinent facts of these operations help others to profit by the experience gained. This report presents the results of a study of secondary-recovery methods used in Kentucky by the Cumberland Petroleum Co. on its L. C. Bailey lease, Oil Springs pool, Magoffin County, Ky. This is believed to be the first water-flooding project in eastern Kentucky (fig. 1).

A geologic study of Mines 32 and 33 in Cambria County, Pa., was conducted as part of a methane control research program. Areas of high methane emission and roof instability are encountered which are related to the structural and stratigraphic features that characterize the geologic setting of these mines. Locally the folds trend N 20° E ±2°, the direction of the butt cleat in the Lower Kittanning coal. The face cleat strikes at N 69° W ±2° and the systematic rock joint in the surface bedrock strikes N 67° W ±2°This suggests that a directional stress oriented N 70° W produced the folds and influenced the directions of coal cleat and systematic joint sets. Analysis of SLAR indicates three directions of prominent regional lineation: N 39° E, N 31° W, and N 70° W. Little gas was encountered during development mining; large volumes of gas are encountered when roof falls. Most of the gas comes from strata above the mined coal; therefore, to control methane, roof instability must be controlled. Roof falls and high rates of methane emission are most likely where less than 30 feet of many thin layers of limestone, shale, and sandstone occurs between the Lower Kittanning coal and the next coal and in zones along the margins of a sandstone channel.

In its role to provide technology to prevent or limit adverse environmental impacts associated with mining or minerals processing, the Bureau of Mines has conducted research at its Tuscaloosa Research Center to asess the environmental impacts of phosphogypsum produced by the Florida phosphate industry. Over the years, stockpiles containing 335 million tons of phosphogypsun have accumulated and the industry continues to generate an additional 33 million tons a year. Samples from approximately 1,000 feet of drill core, obtained from nine stockpiles were characterized using chemical, X-ray diffraction, emission spectrographic, radiological, and physical means. The data developed indicated that phosphogypsum is not a corrosive or toxic hazardous waste as defined by Environmental Protection Agency criteria. Radium concentration averaged 21 picocuries per gram and its content was inversely related to particle sizes. Thirty-nine elements were detected in phosphogypsum; concentrations of these elements did not vary with depth within the stockpiles.

The U.s. Bureau of Mines is conducting research to optimize the utilization and design of mine roof support systems. This report describes methods to evaluate resultant loading on longwall shields, defined as external resultant vertical and horizontal force acting on the canopy and base. Four models are considered: two rigid-body models, an elastic model, and a numerical model. The rigid-body models equate measured internal shield forces to unknown external resultant shield forces (loads) through rigid-body analysis of static equilibrium requirements. The elastic model develops a solution to shield mechanics by evaluation of the load-displacement relationship and stiffness characteristics of the support structure. The numerical model is a two-dimensional finite-element representation of a shield structure. Model determination of resultant shield loading is compared to controlled loading of a shield in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. Parameters investigated are shield height, canopy contact configuration, canopy and base horizontal constrainment, and boundary conditions imposed by vertical and horizontal shield displacements. It is concluded that rigid-body models are most applicable to in situ measurement of shield loading. Applications requirements and potential error sources are discussed.

This list of organizations that conduct research and development programs on coal has been compiled by the Bureau of Mines with the thought that such a directory may provide a useful guide to worldwide research efforts in the areas designated and may facilitate communication between organizations with similar interests. This list includes government, university, private, and commercial organizations. Many of these groups are conducting comparatively modest but often particularly interesting or specialized investigations. The areas of investigation have been defined in a broad manner--these include analysis and constitution, mining and geology, preparation, combustion, briquetting, high- and low-temperature carbonization, gasification, hydrogenation, Fischer-Tropsch, and health and safety. In some instances such information is not available, but the names of the organizations themselves often indicate immediate arias of interest. Special publications issued by and describing the work of each organization have been cited, when known; almost all of the organizations also publish results of their investigations in the technical press. Several foreign technical and trade publications that include such information and are not published directly by any of the organizations listed are cited in the pages following the list of organizations in each country. This list is not complete. Information that would improve coverage and/or accuracy will be welcomed by the Bureau of Mines.

Methane and other hydrocarbon gases, byproducts of coalification, are emitted from coal at widely varying rates and often present ventilation problems during mining. The air in some coal mines apparently contains no methane. To determine if coals from mines which had no history of detectable gas emission contained adsorbed methane, samples of coal at the shaft bottom and at an active face were obtained and placed in sealed metal cylinders. The atmosphere around the coal was sampled and analysed by gas chromatography. Methane, ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, and butane were found to have been desorbed from these coals. Hydrogen and helium were also detected. An estimate of the amount of residual gas per ton of coal indicated that coal samples from the active face generally contained more adsorbed gas than coal samples obtained from the shaft bottom, although in both instances the total amount of gas was relatively small.

Longwall roof behavior is characterized by strata displacements in both the face-to-waste (horizontal) and roof-to-f1oor (vertical) direc-tions. The roof support structure provides resistance to this motion by translation of these displacements into vertical and horizontal support loading. Observations indicate that the shield reacts with both a vertical and horizontal force to uniaxial convergence (displacement). However, there are different magnitudes depending on whether the displacement is vertical or horizontal. This makes it possible to use supports as monitors of strata activity and loading. The Bureau of Mines examined this behavior using a linear elastic model of the support structure with two degrees of freedom. Vertical and horizontal load reactions were related to associated displacement actions of the strata. This was done by determining the stiffness of the shield under controlled vertical and horizontal displacement motions in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. This report provides example predictions of strata convergence and isolation of horizontal support loading due to vertical roof convergence using the linear elastic shield model. The report also examines efforts to determine strata behavior by direct measurement of support displacement.

In connection with the purchase of coal under specifications for Government use, the Bureau of Mines in this report has compiled data on 81 mines located in 15 States. This annual report lists analytical data on the composition and quality of tipple and delivered samples of coal collected during fiscal year 1973. Tipple samples were collected by Bureau of Mines engineers at tipples as coal was being loaded into railroad cars or trucks. Ultimate analyses are given for most of the coalbeds listed. The deliveries were sampled at destination in accordance with instructions issued by the Bureau of Mines. All samples were analyzed in the Bureau laboratory at Pittsburgh.

The Bureau of Mines has completed an underground degasification project in which an underground piping system was used to transport methane from the coalbed to the surface. In a 10-month period four horizontal holes were drilled to an average depth of 1,450 feet. All four holes were surveyed vertically and azimuthally. In 991 days of degasification, 255 MMcf of gas was drained from the coalbed. The underground piping system proved to be a safe and effective means of transporting methane from the coalbed to the surface.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research to devise substitute corrosion-resistant materials by using ion implantation to form alloyed regions near the surfaces of metals. These alloys were prepared by implanting 25-kev Cr+ and/or Ni+ ions into iron. Their resistance to corrosive attack was evaluated by determining their anodic polarization behavior under potentiodynamic conditions in a solution containing sodium chloride, boric acid, and sodium borate. These electrochemical studies have shown that the general corrosion resistance of ion-implanted alloys was comparable to nominally equivalent bulk alloys. The pitting-corrosion resistance of the ion-implanted alloys was superior to that of iron, although not as good as that of most of the bulk alloys tested.

The Bureau of Mines studied the feasibility of producing copper matte in an electric furnace from blends of copper concentrate similar to those currently smelted in a gas-fired reverberatory system at an installation in Tacoma, Wash. A 800-kva electric-arc furnace was used to determine the distribution of constituents when arseniferous concentrates are being smelted in an electric-arc furnace. Test results from smelting 40 tons of materials indicated that electric smelting is more like a conventional gas-fired system than originally expected. Although gas composition over the molten bath is much different in an electric furnace, the secondary constituents such as arsenic, lead, zinc, and antimony behaved the same as in a reverberatory furnace. The results established that an electric furnace would be compatible with sulfur and particulate recovery facilities that are being used.

A system for measuring amplitude probability distributions (APD’s) of electromagnetic noise in coal mines is described and typical APD’s from an underground coal mine are presented. The APD is a basic statistic required for the design and analysis of communication systems, especially those intended for use in noisy environments, and where neither overdesign nor underdesign is acceptable. The rms and average field strengths are obtained by integration of the APD, and examples are shown at several frequencies. All field strength levels are given in absolute units. Selected frequencies cover the range from 10 kHz to 32 MHz.

The program objective was to conduct surveys of respirable dust concentrations in coal mining operations at locations outby the working face. The results of these surveys were directed toward 1. identifying outby dust sources, 2. evaluating the severity of the major dust sources, 3. establishing dust sampling frequency, 4. establishing dust sampler locations, and 5. assessing the? areas of influence of the dust sources. The study included dust sampling of only nonhigh risk personnel and areas at six dif-ferent mines. Thirteen continuous mining, four longwall and two conventional mining sections were sampled. The severity of outby respirable dust sources such as load points, runways, dump points, beltways, transfer points and main haulage operations were characterized and areas within the mine were ranked according to severity. Information on engineering controls was also acquired. Guidelines for implementing a dust sampling program are presented and include sampler locations, ventilation surveys, dust surveys, effects of shift-to-shift variations, and sampling frequency.

"One phase of the Bureau of Mines' work in the field of health and safety is the promotion of the use of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respiratory protective devices. To promote the development of such devices the Bureau has established schedules of minimum requirements for oxygen breathing apparatus3/ gas masks/, supplied-air respirators5/ (hose masks, airline respirators, and abrasive blasting helmets, hoods, or masks), and mechanical-filter respirators6/.Manufacturers of respiratory protective devices may submit their equipment to the Bureau for approval under the requirements of these schedules.As a prerequisite to such submittal, the Bureau requires a statement that the device is completely developed and of the design and material the manufacturer believes suitable for a finished marketable device; that the device has been subjected to inspections and tests such as described in the schedules, and that it met those requirements when tested by the manufacturer or his testing agency; and a. statement regarding the nature, adequacy, and continuity of control of the quality of the respirator. If the manufacturer can satisfy these requirements, and if the device, when tested by the Bureau, meets its requirements, a certificate of approval is granted by the Bureau of Mines. The approved devices bear distinguishing marks that indicate that they have been approved, the purpose for which they are approved, and the limitations of their use. If it is found at any time that approved devices purchased in the oven market and tested do not meet the requirements of the schedule, the Bureau may rescind that approval. Lists7/ of approved devices are published periodically for the convenient information of the public.Respiratory equipment may be divided into two main groups: (1). Those that afford protection by removing atmospheric contaminants and (2) those by which a respirable atmosphere from an uncontaminated source is supplied to the wearer.The devices that protect by the removal of contaminants may be divided into two subgroups: (1) Those that protect against gaseous contaminants and (2) those that protect against particulate matter. There may, of course, be combinations of these two.The devices by which a respirable atmosphere is furnished to the wearer also may be divided into two subgroups: (1) The self-contained type, by which the supply of oxygen, or material from which the oxygen can be generated is carried by the wearer, and (2) the hose type, by which air is supplied to the wearer through a hose or tube."
