The U.S. Bureau of Mines has long recognized the hazards associated with rock burst activity in underground mines. Concern over lost lives and resources prompted this study to further characterize rock burst occurrence as related to microseismicity and mining. A period of over 1,079 days of mining with 101 bursts, where microseismicity rates and blasting were recorded, was used in this study. Statistical analyses investigated relationships between (1) rock burst occurrence versus blasting, (2) rock burst size versus damage, (3) rock burst occurrence versus average micro seismicity rates, and (4) rock burst occurrence versus local mine geometry. Statistical analyses showed that 91% of all rock bursts occur with blasting while only 3% of all rock bursts occur, apparently, independent of blasting. Additionally, the long-term average daily micro seismicity rates appear to dictate when blasting will trigger rock bursts. Time series analysis on the daily microseismicity resulted in model equations that may be used to forecast the daily microseismic activity.

This report summarizes the results of a hydrologic research study conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in cooperation with Energy West Mining Co. at the Deer Creek and Cottonwood Mines, near Orangeville, UT. The USBM evaluated hydrologic and overburden failure data to assess the response of local ground water to underground coal mining in single-and multiple-seam conditions. Fourteen springs located over the two mines were investigated in the study along with overburden failure response caused by longwall panel extraction. Spring discharge was compared to climatic variation and time of undermining to quantify response to undermining. Spring discharge had been reduced owing to below-normal precipitation during the period evaluated. The response of springs to mining in the vicinity was influenced in part by the thick overburden present at the study site the presence of hydrophilic clays and mudstones in the overburden stratigraphy, and elevation of the springs above mine level, which buffered the effects of undermining.

"INTRODUCTION The potash mineral receiving the most attention in the newly discovered. New Mexico-Texas potash district near Carlsbad, N. M. is sylvite (potassium chloride). Sylvite contains more potassium than any other mineral. Merchantable high-grade deposits have been found, and those of lower grade may be enriched to a high degree of purity by refining methods. Deposits containing sylvite were the first to be developed and axe the only ones being mined.However, many other minerals that contain potash occur in the salt beds of the Carlsbad District. Of these the more important are polyhalite, carnallite, langbeinite, leonite, and kainite. The nature of the deposits and their mineralogy have been described in detail by members of the United States Geological Survey. 4/Langbeinite, although not so abundant in these deposits as carnallite and has particular interest because the potash is in the form of the sulphate and as such commands a premium in terms of K20 unit. In laboratory tests using reconstructed soil columns, rubber latex showed good sealing efficiency when applied at a rate equivalent to 4000-5000 pounds per acre. Results of field testing, however, were inconclusive. The ideal situation in which latex would coagulate in a narrow zone two to three feet below the surface by reacting with acidic or metallic constituents of the soil was not attained. Rather, the latex was deposited progressively as it passed through the soil (most of it remained in the top foot), the rate of deposition being dependent on soil structure and composition as well as on properties of the latex such as particle size and emulsion stability. Latex stability appears to be a more critical property than latex particle size in controlling penetration. Addition of excess anionic or nonionic surfactants to latex improved its penetration into the soil. A styrene-butadiene (SBR) rubber latex of 2400 Å average particle size with high mechanical stability gave the best balance of penetrating ability and sealing capacity in laboratory tests and this was confirmed in tests on a 5 x 5 foot test plot at Lanse, Pennsylvania. This latex was subsequently applied to three one-quarter-acre plots at Lanse by sprinkler irrigation, and compared to adjacent areas that were sprinkled with water only. Soil moisture measurements did not enable us to judge the effectiveness of the seal because differences between sampling positions were greater than differences between treated and untreated sections, but permeability tests showed that water flow was much slower (90-99% reduction) within the top ten inches of soil in the latex- treated sections. This sealing effectiveness was reduced after wintering. There was no deleterious effect on the vegetation as a result of sprinkling the areas with latex. A laboratory study conducted in a 5 x 5 x 5 foot box containing uniform reconstructed soil from a New Jersey source suggests that latex penetration into the soil in the field occurs mainly through natural macro openings and not through the capillaries of the soil structure. Dilute solutions of ammonium hydroxide or sodium carbonate (with no latex present) were found to seal effectively in laboratory soil columns as well as in field applications. However, since these chemicals are water soluble, the seal is temporary. Raw material costs of latex at the application rates used in the field testing are in the order of $1000 per acre. This report presents the results of a study of water injection in the HX sub-pool fault block V-B, in the Upper Terminal zone, Wilmington field, California, and is based on data obtained to May 1957. An earlier report3/ describes the results of gas injection in part of the field. The principal purpose of the pilot flood was to determine whether a sand having a permeability of 1,200 millidarcys and containing oil having a viscosity of 17 centipoises could be waterflooded effectively. The results of a preliminary study by engineers of the Long Beach Harbor Department of oil recoveries from areas where encroaching edgewater was active and the results of an independent study by a consultant retained by the Long Beach Harbor Department were favorable to a trial waterflood. After these preliminary studies, a detailed petroleum-engineering exam-ination was made of the technical details. As a result, a peripheral flood was started in June 1953. The peripheral flood was deemed desirable because the producing wells are bottomed a short distance from the edgewater. The HX subpool was selected for the pilot test because it is an isolated section of the Upper Terminal zone and is separated from the adjoining pools by faults on the east and west and by edgewater on the north, south, and west. Several petroleum-engineering methods were applied to evaluate the performance of the waterflood, and all showed that injecting water stimulated oil production.

This report gives the results of an experimental study of the progressive changes that occur in particle size and size distribution when a homogeneous and isotropic mineral is subjected to crushing by impact. The mineral used in the study was uniformly sized quartz, which was crushed in a simple drop¬-weight machine that applied impact energy up to about 100 kg-cm per g. Screen analyses of the crushed products were analyzed by the method of moments to determine the mean size, variance, skewness, and kurtosis. Analysis of the data from these experiments shows that the mean size of the crushed product is a function of the energy input and the initial size. The size distribution is functionally related to the degree of size reduction. As the mean particle size is decreased, at first there is a corresponding increase in the variance and decrease in the skewness, But, as size reduction is carried further, each tends eventually to approach a steady value, and the form of the size distribution becomes stable.

A mineral survey of a 12,350-acre portion of the 13,150-acre Juniper Creek Wilderness Study Area (WSA) in southwestern Idaho was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1984. The area is entirely underlain by thick flows of Banbury Basalt. Rhyolitic tuff of Little Jacks Creek is exposed in the walls of the Owyhee River canyon beneath the basalt. Minor units of lacustrine sediment occur between the volcanic layers. No mines or claims occur in the area, and no mineralized zones were found. The study area is covered by oil and gas leases or lease applications; there has been no known exploration.

From time to time the Bureau of Mines has interpreted and applied certain provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act and Federal Mine Safety Codes, primarily for the guidance of Federal Coal Mine Inspectors. Although interpretations of the Act have appeared in the Federal Register, the Code interpretations and practical applications have not been published. In response to many requests from representatives of the coal-mining industry, the Bureau is publishing this information to promote better understanding of those provisions that may be misinterpreted or misapplied. INTERPRETATIONS AND APPLICATIONS Two Federal Mine Safety Codes are discussed in this report, namely the Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous-Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States, Part 1, and the Federal Mine Safety Code, Anthracite Mines of the United States, Part 1. In this circular the word Codes refers to both directives; Code* refers to the code for bituminous-coal and lignite mines; Code? refers to the one for anthracite mines. Act* refers only to bituminous-coal and lignite mines.

This paper describes the methods and equipment used by the Utah Copper Co. in constructing a vehicular tunnel at Bingham Canyon, Utah, Completion and use of this tunnel for vehicular and pedestrian traffic permitted abandonment of the long-used county highway connecting Bingham and Copperfield. Expanding- operations of the Utah Copper open-cut mine, necessitated construction of a vehicular route away from the ore body. The site Of the tunnel is well beyond ultimate nit slopes and future mining operations. The tunnel not only diverts vehicular and pedestrian traffic is but also carrier, creek water, copper water, sewage, pipe lines, and. power and telephone cables between the two communities. The dimensions of the tunnel permit one-way traffic only. Traffic-control lights have been installed. Owing to the possibility of accumulation of carbon monoxide gas from automobile exhausts, automatic gas detectors has been installed at various stations. These detectors control the operation of a large exhaust fan situated at the upper portal of the tunnel.

In the Bureau of Mines study, a filter with a 20-by 20-inch-square cross section was inserted into the exhaust ducting of a 4-stroke-cycle, 90-hp diesel engine, and the efficiency of removal of total particulate was measured gravimetrically as a function of time. Removal efficiencies were close to 90 pct during the main portion of several extended runs employing several combinations of filter beds. Variations in engine load had little effect on collection efficiency. Particle size as measured by a Bureau-developed online instrument centered on 0.07 m based on number count. Removal efficiency increased rather sharply for both larger and smaller particles.

This paper presents the results of research undertaken to recover titanium and columbium by low-temperature chlorination of low-grade columbium-bearing ilmenite concentrates, and to simultaneously remove chlorinated impurities from the volatile chlorides without resort to distillation. Coke-reduced ilmenite was chlorinated at 400° to 500° C., and the resulting TiC14 was free of most impurities before condensation. A heated purification column was used wherein various packing materials reacted chemically or physically with the impurities which passed through them in the vapor phase. A nearly water-white TiC14 product was obtained directly. The principal impurities in the titanium tetrachloride were: 0.02 percent Fe, 0.01 percent V, 0.05 percent A1, 0.04 percent Si, and 0.07 percent Cb. This is a less pure product than commercial TiC14. Most of the columbium was recovered as crude CbC15, requiring further refining.

The Anaconda Pintlar Wilderness has a significant mineral resource potential. Five deposits have resources totaling about 180,300 tons (163,600 t) containing silver, copper, lead, gold, and zinc. Another 11, not sufficiently exposed to allow resource estimates, may have additional mineral potential. No placer deposits are indicated. There is little potential for the production of sand, gravel, or stone; alternate sources are closer to markets. No oil, gas, uranium, or geothermal energy sources are known to be present.

Curtailment of bauxite importation by enemy activities during World War II focused attention on the necessity of developing domestic deposits of aluminous materials. Large quantities of aluminum ores such as kaolin, siliceous bauxites, high-iron bauxites, anorthosite, and diaspore clays are available but not readily amenable to Bayer processing because of excessive impurities. The Bayer process, which is the only commercial method in use in the United States for producing metallurgical-grade alumina, requires a high Al2O3 bauxite relatively low in SiO2 and Fe2O3. The Bureau of Mines was charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of alumina from these low-grade ores. One part of the program was an investigation, in the laboratory and pilot plant, of the recovery of alumina by the lime-soda sinter process. Ores comprising kaolin, diasporic clays, anorthosite, and siliceous bauxites have been investigated and studied in the laboratory and pilot plant, and a series 'of reports covering these investigations has been prepared.

The Bureau of Mines investigated hydrometallurgical procedures for concentrating precious metals from a mechanically processed metal fraction of obsolete military electronic scrap. Feed material for the leaching procedures described in this report was the high-tension-separated metal concentrate obtained as a fraction from mechanically processing partially stripped electronic units. Initial pretreatment with a 20-wt-pct-NaOH solution solubilized most of the aluminum. After washing, the resulting residue was incinerated to destroy any organics attached to metal particles. The incinerated residue was leached with 20-vol-pct H2S04 solution using two methods, countercurrent pressure and ultrasonic-aided leaching to solubilize the base metals, predominantly copper. Silver was recovered from the base metal leach residue using 50-vol-pct HN03, and gold contaminated with several percent palladium was recovered from the silver leach residue using aqua regia. The impure silver and gold plus palladium products represent about 1.5 wt pct of the high-tension-separated metal concentrate. Included is a three-step process evaluation study of mechanical processing of general electronic scrap and two hydrometallurgical procedures for leaching high-tension-separated metallic concentrates obtained from the mechanical processing step. Process evaluation concluded that only mechanical processing is economically viable.

"INTRODUCTION The Congress theme ""Improvement of Mine Productivity and Overall Economics by Modern Technology"" is probably beat: addressed by the subtheme allocated to this Plenary Session. It is appropriate that .Theme 1 emphasizes the simple point that effective use of geotechnical information is the key to improving mine productivity. In essence, this means that: (1) geological and geomechanics, (rock mechanics) data must be collected in sufficient quantity and of high quality; (ii) data interpretation must be performed specifically for purposes of engineering design; (iii) innovative design approaches should be used to bring about Improvements in productivity and safety.While, each of these three aspects .may: seem obvious to any mining engineer it is a fact that the above sequence is seldom followed and as a result, mining engineering not infrequently lags, behind other branches of engineering when it comes to design creativity, efficiency and safety.. . After all, mining is still-one of the most hazardous occupations and we are gathered here to discuss, at the highest world professional forum, how to use more effectively the modern technology. This however, does not mean that mining engineers are less capable than other engineers or that their achievements are any lesser; far from it! Mining engineers are the cream of the engineering society on whose efforts depends the welfare of mankind. Moreover, they have produced minerals and coal evergrowing quantities against evergrowing difficulties. Yet, we must and can become even better because we are not making full use of the modern technology and rock mechanics knowledge already at our disposal, and. we are not being innovative enough to the full extent of .our capabilities."

This Bureau of Mines report presents a method for combining the distribution curves at different specific gravities of separation, for a given piece of coal-cleaning equipment and a given raw coal feed, into a single, generalized distribution curve normalized with respect to specific gravity and, therefore, independent of the specific gravity of separation. Illustrative generalized distribution curves, based upon Bureau of Mines collected data on industrial operations, are presented for five different types of coal-cleaning equipment. The well-known concept of probable error is extended to the generalized distribution curve. It is shown that the conventional probable error is directly proportional to the specific gravity of separation. A number of sample calculations, illustrating the use of the generalized distribution curve and generalized probable error, are presented in the appendix.

This report describes procedures for using a high-speed camera to study blasting phenomena. Both quantitative and qualitative information can be obtained, provided that proper interpretations of the projected two-dimensional images are made. Geometrical relationships between object and image displacements are given in terms of horizontal and vertical angles of the camera optic axis with respect to the quarry face. Correction factors are given for obtaining true object displacements from image displacements in the camera film plane. The time of initial rock movement also is considered, and the control-ling factors of camera speed, scale factor, minimum increment of projection measurement, etc., are evaluated in terms of minimum time intervals. The high-speed camera and associated equipment are described, and field measurements and laboratory data analysis techniques are outlined. An analysis of a typical high-speed motion picture is made, and the application of the necessary correction factors is illustrated.

Pittsburgh bed and Lower Freeport bed coals were tested in the U.S. Bureau of Mines two-stage froth flotation pilot plant, which utilizes a new flotation process to remove pyritic sulfur. The process consists of a first-stage coal flotation step to remove coarse, free pyrite and other refuse in the tailings. The clean coal froth concentrate is then repulped and treated with a coal depressant, a pyrite collector, and a frother to selectively float the remaining pyrite in a second stage. Results in the pilot plant were excellent, comparing well with those obtained in laboratory batch tests. That is, about 70 percent of the pyrite present in the Pittsburgh bed coal and about 90 percent of the pyrite present in the Lower Freeport bed coal were removed with excellent final clean coal recoveries.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines determined the effect of common sulfide minerals on the corrosion rates of various types of ferrous alloy grinding media. Data obtained from this study will aid in determining the contribution of any electrochemical reactions between sulfide minerals and grinding media to the total grinding media consumption. Common sulfide minerals used in this study were chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite. In the presence of oxygen, chalcopyrite was found to increase the corrosion rate, galena was found to decrease the corrosion rate, and the effect of sphalerite was dependent upon the type of grinding media. Possible electrochemical reactions of these minerals in the presence of grinding media are suggested.

Interesting data on electric blasting and sinking of the Montreal No. 5 shaft of the Montreal Mining Co., Montreal, Wis., were obtained during the sinking of the last 877 feet of this shaft. Several unusual features and safety practices are also to be found in the Montreal mine. The Montreal shaft was sunk 2,156 feet from August 16, 1921, to May 1, 1924, and 877 feet from October, 1927, to June, 1928. The first section of the shaft was supported with steel sets spaced 5 feet on centers; and instead of lagging the walls were covered with three-eighths of an inch of gunite where Greenstone was encountered, and where quartz-slate was found (from the surface to the 12th level) the walls were lagged with tamarack lath treated with carbolineum, a preservative.
