Cooperative efforts by the Bureau of Mines and Agapito & Associates, Inc., Grand Junction, CO, achieved the research objective of showing that data from measurements of the rate and change in rate of mine roof movement can be effective in detecting roof instability. Several instruments and techniques have been used to monitor roof movement and to detect imminent roof caves during pillar robbing. Early detection of unstable conditions can provide time either to withdraw personnel and equipment or to allocate supplemental support to prevent injury or down-time. Critical convergence rates were determined both manually and electronically. The detection of critical rate of movement has been shown to be an effective tool in ground control efforts.

Thermodynamics is a powerful tool for investigating rotational isomerism in substituted ethanes and related molecules. Accurate calorimetric data can be interpreted to give information, not only about the energy difference between conformations, but also about the shape of the potential barrier hindering rotation from one conformation to another. However, a deterrent to this use of thermodynamics is the labor required to calculate the contributions to the thermodynamic functions for assumed potential functions. Tables of thermo-dynamic contributions for appropriate potential functions can eliminate that labor and greatly facilitate the thermodynamic study of rotational isomerism. In this research, tables of contributions to the thermodynamic functions were compiled for two potential functions typical of some commonly encountered examples of rotational isomerism. TYPES OF POTENTIAL FUNCTIONS Potential function 1, illustrated in figure 1, A, has two equal minima higher than the third. It has the general shape of the barrier to internal rotation in n-butane, for example. The trans conformation of n-butane has the lowest energy, and the two skew or gauche conformations have equal but higher energy. Potential function2, illustrated in figure 1, B, has two equal minima lower than the third. It has the general shape of the barrier in 2-methylbutane, for example. The two C1 conformations of 2-methylbutane have equal energy much lower than the assumed Cs conformation, which has not been observed spectroscopically.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted experiments on electrowinning of neodymium metal by using a molten-metal cathode at 650° C and an electrolyte of 50 mol pct NdCl3 (neodymium chloride) and 50 mol pct KCI (potassium chloride). The molten-metal cathodes were alloys of magnesium and zinc or magnesium and cadmium. Current efficiencies were 90 pct with a Mg-Zn cathode and 80 pct with a Mg-Cd cathode; The Mg-Cd cathode was easily separated from the electrolyte. In contrast, the Mg-Zn cathode tended to mix with the electrolyte, making separation difficult. The cathode metals were separated from the neodymium by distillation at 1,100° C under a vacuum of 10-3 torr. Neodymium metal of 99.9+ purity was recovered from the Mg-Cd alloy cathode after 30 min distillation time. The neodymium recovered from the Mg-Zn system contained almost 2 pct Zn after vacuum distillation. Continuous operation using the Mg-Cd alloy cathode was demonstrated.

"INTRODCJCTJONPlatelet activating factor (PAF) is a glycerophospholipid (1-0-alkyl-2-acctyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphoryl choline) which has been shown to mediate a broad range of biological activities. 1·3 Its pulmonary actions include contraction of pulmonary tissue,4 secretion of leukotrienes from leukocytcs,5 airway constriction,6 pulmonary edema,7 and enhanced migration of neutrophils into the airspaces of thelungs.8-9PAF can be released from several different cell types, such as, basophils, neutrophils and alveolar macrophages, in response to a variety of particulates or membrane stimulants which include zymosan, calcium ionophore, phorbol esters, chemotactic agents, and endotoxin. 1~1 3 Therefore, PAF may play an important role in the development of pneumoconioses by mediating pulmonary responses of lung cells to a variety of occupational dusts. To investigate this possibility, we determined the effects of P AF on several physiological parameters of neutrophils, alveolar macrophages, and alveolar type Il epithelial cells.METHODSIsolation of CellsNeutrophils were isolated from human blood by dextran settling and centrifugal elutriation.14 Isolated neutrophils (93% pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium (145 mM NaCl, 5 mM KCI, 10 mM HEPES, 5 mM glucose, and 1 mM CaC12; pH = 7.4). Cell number and volume were determined with an electronic cell counter equipped with a sizing attachment.Rat alveolar macrophages were obtained by pulmonary lavage with ea2+, Mg2+-free Hanks balanced salts solution. 15 Alveolar macrophages (94% pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium, counted, and sized electronically.Rat alveolar type Il cells were isolated by enzymatic digestion for 35 minutes at 37°C with 40 µ/ml type I elastasc and 0.1 % collagenase and purified by centrifugal elutriation. 16.17 Type Il cells (92 % pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium for measurement of membrane potential, oxygen consumption, and trypan blue exclusion. Type Il pneumocytcs were resuspended in 0.1 M NaCl plus 0.05 M HEPES (pH = 7.8) to measure cytochrome P450-dependent activities and aggregation. Cell size and number were determined electronically."

The Bureau of Mines conducted preliminary beneficiation studies of a gold-bearing graphitic schist from Blue Hill, Tallapoosa County, Ala. The average analysis of the material was 0.08 oz/ton gold. Tabling of minus 35-mesh material recovered 83 to 94 percent of the gold at grades of 6.925 to 2.165 oz/ton, respectively. A combination of jigging and tabling resulted in a concentrate assaying 24.3 oz/ton gold and contained 87 percent of the total gold. Treatment of the material by jigging, tabling, and amalgamation recovered 86.5 percent of the gold.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the Ketchem Dome tin prospect in east-central Alaska to evaluate the tin resource. The studies included field investigations, mineralogical characterization, and concentration of the tin-bearing minerals. The tin mineralization consists of cassiterite (Sn02), which occurs as grains disseminated in a greisen (quartz-mica) matrixo A bulk sample from the largest and best-developed greisen vein exposed at Ketchem Dome contained 0.51 pct Sn. Concentration of the cassiterite by gravity table methods resulted in a product that contained 56 pct of the tin at a grade of 41.4 pct Sn. The mineralization exposed at Ketchem Dome is typical of greisen found in the area and elsewhere in interior Alaska.

Horizontal displacements and ground strains induced by mine subsidence are significant information needed for calculating damage and developing precautions against subsidence effects on surface structures. To devise a simple method for determining the surface horizonal displacements and strains simultaneously with the subsidence prediction, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the significance of the tilt number, which is the proportionality constant in the relationship between the horizontal displacement and the slope of the subsidence profile. The ratio of the tilt number to the critical radius of the subsidence trough is identical to the ratio of the maximum possible horizontal displacement to the full subsidence, which is found to be constant in most European coalfields. If this ratio is known for a particular minesite in the United States, then horizontal displacement and ground strains can be readily obtained from the primary subsidence data.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes a system to determine the position and heading of a mining machine during maneuvers in the face area of an operating mine section. The system is the first step in the development of a guidance system for automated mining machines. The position and heading algorithm is described, and a preliminary error analysis is performed. The sensors employed were linear position transducers mounted on a mining machine with their cables attached to points on a stationary reference. Four linear position transducers were used to provide a data redundancy that increased the reliability of the guidance system. The linear position information obtained from the transducers was processed mathematically via the position and heading algorithm to provide the desired position and heading information. The algorithm takes advantage of sensor redundancy to continually test the accuracy of the sensor data. The major sources of error were determined to be the linear position transducers, the analog-to-digital (A/D) converter used to interpret the data, and the sampling frequency of the measurement system. These sources of error were evaluated to determine their inaccuracies for use in calculating the overall system accuracy.

The effect of comparatively low concentrations of carbon monoxide for short periods and under normal air conditions.of temperature and humidity , with the subject at rest , was studied by Dr. Yandell Henderson and his co -workers . In making recommendations to the New York and New Jersey tunnel commissions * he advised that , if the New York New Jersey vehicular tunnel be so ventilated that persons passing through the tunnel would be exposed to not more than 4 parts of carbon monoxide in 10,000 parts of air for not longer than 45 minutes , they would experience no ill effects . supplementary experiments , carried out by us in connection with our studies at the Bureau of Mines experiment station at Pittsburgh, substantiated this advice . ** In continuing our studies on low concentrations of carbon monoxide , we made a few experiments in a gas chamber where the conditions could be accurately controlled . The factors investigatel were : ( 1 ) The effect of long exposure in low concentrations of carbon monoxide ; ( 2 ) The effect of strenuous exercise ; ( 3 ) The effect of high temperature and humidity in low concentrations of ccarbon Lonoxide .

This paper is the fourth of the current series issued by the Bureau of Mines on lime- plant problems . It is hoped that the information presented in these reports will develop sufficient interest among lime- plant operators to prompt them to discuss with the Bureau their own experiences , for it is believed by such an interchange of ideas conclusions will be reached that will be of practical benefit to the entire industry . Much valuable information has been obtained from replies to the papers already issued , but a more general response is greatly desired . It is hoped that many operators will contribute additions to the information on transportation systems now at hand by answering the questions on the final page .

Background: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently investigated ignition incidents resulting from drilling holes into sealed and filled plow frame sections. A farmer and farm worker were seriously burned in two separate incidents that occurred in the same county in New York under similar conditions. They had just penetrated sealed sections of their plow frames with electric drills when a roar of escaping gas at high pressure was heard, and the victims were thrown back by the gas jet and engulfed in flames. The flames were quickly extinguished ,but the victims suffered burns. NIOSH experts were asked to help find the cause of these hazardous incidents.

This paper, describing the mining method at the Black Butte quicksilver mine, is one of a series of papers being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various districts of the United States. It is presented to show the mining practice and costs in the successful treatment of low-grade quicksilver deposits. The operation discussed is an excellent example of w1-pat can be done in working a limited tonnage of low-grade ore under sound management. The Black Butte mine is situated at Black Butte, Lane County, in the southern part of the State of Oregon, 17-1/2 miles from Cottage Grove -- a station on the Siskiyou branch of the Southern Pacific Co. The Black Butte mining district lies in the foothills of the Calapooia Mountain Range, which connects with the Cascade Range on the east and with the Coast Range on the west. The elevation at '.lie reduction plant is 1,000 feet above sea level. The apex of Black Butte Mountain, or which the mine is situated, has an elevation of 2,700 feet. The district possesses exceptional natural facilities infrequently met with elsewhere for the mining and reduction of cinnabar ores. Objective To accurately measure very low air velocities (0-100 ft/min) in U.S. large-opening underground metal/nonmetal mines. Background Hundreds of metal/nonmetal underground mines operate throughout the United States. They extract commercial products from deposits such as limestone, salt, and gypsum. Mining generates a wide variety of gases and dusts, such as silica, diesel exhaust, radon, blasting byproducts, and perhaps even methane. If these substances become airborne, they can adversely affect the health and safety of underground workers. Many metal/nonmetal mines have large cross-sectional airways that could be 60 times larger than an average underground coal mine entry. These large airways require adequate volumes of fresh air to dilute, make harmless, and exhaust the toxic and, at times, explosive byproducts. However, in some underground mine sections, air movement is barely perceptible. The technology of measuring very low air velocities will become increasingly more important for operators of large-opening stone mines in order to monitor miner exposure to diesel particulate matter. Conventional anemometers (e.g., vane) are capable of accurately measuring air velocities only above 100 ft/min. Thus, it was necessary to investigate other anemometry technology to detect low air velocities in the range of 0-100 ft/min. Two different portable ultrasonic anemometers were tested. Actual testing was done in an underground limestone mine with openings about 51 ft wide by 29 ft high. Ultrasonic Anemometers Vane-type anemometers are commonly used by engineering personnel throughout the underground coal mine industry. They work well in measuring air velocities >100 ft/min. However, a separate technology, e.g., portable ultrasonics, is needed to measure air velocities much below 100 ft/min at various places within the large mine opening. Laser-doppler technology was also considered for this application, but was ruled out because of its high cost and other technical limitations. With no moving parts, the portable ultrasonic anemometers are claimed to be accurate down to about 1or 2 ft/min. The first type of ultrasonic anemometer that was examined underground is manufactured by Gill Instruments Ltd., Hampshire, U.K. The U.S. distributor is IN USA, Needham, MA. The Gill Instruments Solent Volometer (figure 1) is a battery-powered, single-axis anemometer meant for measuring low to medium air flows up to1,999 ft/min. It uses the ultrasonic "time of flight" principle where pulses of high-frequency sound are transmitted along the air flow path and the time taken to reach the receiver is measured. The faster the air speed, the quicker the pulses reach the receiver. The second ultrasonic anemometer that was examined under-ground is manufactured by Airflow Developments Ltd., Buckinghamshire, U.K. The U.S. distributor is Airflow Technical Products, Inc., Andover, NJ. The Anemosonic UA-6 (figure 2) is a battery-powered, handheld instrument with digital display. It measures air velocity (0 to 9,999 ft/min) or volume flow, flow turbulence intensity, and air temperature. Neither device is considered to be intrinsically safe for use in underground gassy coal mines. A comparison of salient specifications of both instruments is shown in table 1. The total suspended weight includes the instrument (Gill) or instrument probe (Airflow) plus about 35 ft of connecting cable attached to the pole. This combination of instrument plus cable length allows two operators to measure air velocities up to about 30 ft above the mine floor. Figures 1 and 2 show how each unit would be attached to an extensible, graduated fiberglass rod in order to position the sensor probe at a certain spatial point (centroid of the quadrate) within the underground large opening.

Objective To reduce equipment operator exposure to respirable dust in enclosed cabs by examining the effectiveness of retrofitting air pressurization and filtration systems on existing cabs. Background Many types of heavy equipment are used in mining, construction, and agriculture. Most have enclosed cabs to protect the equipment operator from excessive dust and noise exposure. When the equipment is new, controls are normally implemented into the cab to keep these exposures at acceptable levels. However, as this equipment becomes older, many components of the enclosure deteriorate, such as gaskets and seals. This causes the effectiveness of the enclosed cab to be greatly reduced. Once this occurs, the equipment operator's dust exposure can increase to hazardous levels. In surface mining operations, elevated exposures to crystalline silica have caused an excessive incidence of silicosis. Approach A cooperative research study with a mining operation and a cab filtration company was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of retrofitting an older surface drill with two controls to lower the drill operator's respirable dust exposure. These two controls were: (1) A good air filtering and pressurization system to ensure that clean air was delivered into the enclosed cab. Ideally, the incoming air filter should be 99% efficient in removing particles with an aero- dynamic diameter of 0.3 pm or greater from the airflow. (2) Sufficiently sealing the cab to develop a positive static pres- sure and ensure that dust was not leaking into the cab. This was done by plugging all holes and cracks and maintaining good gaskets and seals. To prevent wind from forcing contaminated air through holes in the cab, the cab's static pressure must be greater than the wind's velocity pressure. During the course of this research, it was found that a floor heater fan used in the drill during the winter months greatly increased the operator’s Respirable dust exposure. Problem Identification Four days of background dust levels were measured as a baseline for this research. These baseline measurements were taken in May 2000 when air temperatures ranged from 60° to 70° F. When this was completed, the two controls were implemented. The first control was to install an improved air filtering and pressurization system on the enclosed cab. This was composed of a two-stage prefilter, a blower, then the respirator-medium secondary filter. Since the secondary filter was on the positive side of the fan, all air delivered into the enclosed cab had to pass through this secondary filter. After the filtering system was installed, the cab was pressurized to a static pressure of0.01 inches of water (w.g.), which is still very minimal. The second control was to seal the cab. New door gaskets were installed, and all cracks and holes in the shell of the enclosure were plugged. This increased the cab pressurization to approximately 0.1 inches w.g.

This paper, which is one of a group presented by the United States Bureau of Mines covering mining practice in different districts, deals in particular with the methods employed in mining the horizontal type of zinc-lead orebodies of the West Baxter area of the Tri-State zinc and lead district. These orebodies, locally termed "sheet-ground" bodies, with their relatively low working faces and low tenor of zinc and lead, require changes in the mining practice which is used in the balance of the district. In addition to the general mining methods, this paper also describes the system of hand sorting employed prior to the direct milling of the ore. The Hartley mine is situated mile west of Baxter Springs, Kans., as indicated in Figure 1. Its general outline and the location of the shafts with respect to the milling plant are shown in Figure 2.

In the past few years the advance of the Sunshine mine to national prominence as the chief silver-producing mine of the United States has revived interest in the area in which it is situated. Although this area lies between the great lead-Zinc-silver mines at Kellogg and those in the vicinity of Burke and Mullan it was generally presumed to be almost barren, as little ore had been found there until substantial ore bodies were developed on deep levels of the Sunshine mine. In early days it was called the "dry belt" because its ores were siliceous and contained little lead; but the classification of ores in smelting as wet or dry, although once customary, has long been obsolete The area will therefore be referred to in this paper as the silver belt of the Coeur d'Alene district because the value of its ore is due chiefly to silver, the current production of which is large, providing over 60 percent of the silver output of Idaho. Silver Belt - Its Limits and Character With a daily production of half a ten of silver or more from the Sunshine mine, the silver belt has become the scene of extensive exploration at many properties, and the outlook for its future seems promising enough to warrant the lively interest now being displayed in the area by the public.

The present status of the National Bureau of Standards program is that many magnetic tapes of analog data have been recorded in four major mines. Each mine uses different types of equipment. In addition, some surface measurements of noise have been made at two additional mines. Two types of recordings have been made: (1) broadband measurements for spectral plots and (2) narrowband measurements for amplitude probability density (APD) plots. Only data from one mine (Robena #4) has been processed and was, presented at this workshop. The short-term goals are: (1) finish processing data from the other mines, (2) establish or reduce measurement system uncertainties, (3) put Robella report into final form for distribution, and (4) hold a review to determine what has been done, to distribute and to interpret the preliminary data, and to determine what still needs to be done. Long-term goals are: (1) complete final reports on each of the mine trips, (2) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines already visited and establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions, and (3) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines that have not been visited (but that use similar equipment to those visited) and also establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions. Specific factors or formats to be presented include: (A) For underground broadband measurements: 1. 300 Hz to 100 kHz spectral plots 2. 300 Hz to 384 kHz spectral plots 3. 300 Hz to 192 kHz spectral plots 4. 300 Hz to 6kHz (subject to change to 3 or 12 kHz) spectral plots (B) For surface broadband measurements: 1. 300 Hz to 6 kHz (or 12 kHz) spectral plots 2. 300 Hz to 3 kHz spectral plots (C) For underground narrowband measurements : 1. "This paper was the subject of a cross-disciplinary presentation under the chairmanship of Dr A.M. EdwardsManagers need quality information for effective decision making. This demand, at the present time, is being fulfilled by the increased use of computers via information systems, decision support systems and management information systems. The idea of incorporating intelligence into computers to aid decision-makers has been evolving for over two decades. In recent years, significant progress is reported on applications to business and sciences. In engineering functions, the Artificial Intelligence approach that seems to have great potential is the application of Knowledge Based Systems.The primary objective of this paper is to identify domains in mining engineering where application of knowledge based systems could be beneficial. Incorporation of the expertise required during the analysis and interpretation stages of an engineering design problem through knowledge based systems is recognized as an area of significant benefit. To this end, the components of knowledge based systems for mine ventilation and strata control design are described. The potential applications and limitations of knowledge based systems are outlined. IntroductionCorrect decisions are the key to success in any enterprise. Scope of decisions varies with the echelons of management hierarchy. The decisions of top management are strategic, relating to the long-term future of the organization. In a mineral organization, these deal with such issues as the acquisition of a new mineral property or the diversification of the business to exploit additional markets. At the operational level, a manager is concerned with decisions pertaining to day-to- day eventualities related to production activities and other short-term needs. In either case, the prerequisite is the timely availability and use of information. The difficulty involved in decision-making depends on the situational aspect. In. many cases, the decisions to be made under given conditions are fairly straight-forward and standard. This may be due to experience gained from decision-making in similar situations in the past. In fact, many decisions in operations management are either repetitive or routine."

A mineral purvey of 40,000 acres of the 42,213-acre Little Humboldt River Wilderness Study Area was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. There are no identified mineral resources but anomalous gold, silver, mercury, and arsenic concentrations were found. The study area is located in Elko County, NV, in the Owyhee Upland geomorphic subprovince. It is underlain by mid- to late-Miocene-age rhyolite, basalt, tuff, vitric ash, and tuffaceous siltstone. On the south side and partly within the study area, a mining company recently (January 1986) located 125 contiguous claims over an area of hydrothermally-altered volcanic rocks that have anomalous surface concentrations of gold, mercury, arsenic, and silver. Anomalous gold-silver concentrations in altered rocks were encountered at several other widely scattered localities in the study area. These elevated metal concentrations and associated hydrothermal alteration indicate gold resources may be present in the study area. A 20-ft-thick bed of diatomaceous earth, which contains 60 to 85 percent diatoms, crops out 0.3 mi north of the study area. Elsewhere, three samples of altered volcanic tuff taken within the study area contain from 46 to 70 percent zeolite (clinoptilolite). The diatomaceous earth and zeolite sampled are not of sufficient quality to compete with materials presently being marketed. There has been no mineral production from the study area, but a caved adit, about 25 ft long, and six prospect pits were found.

To develop a quick, safe, and effective method that allows workers at mineral processing operations to clean their dust-soiled clothing periodically throughout the workday. Background Reducing workers' respirable dust exposure to silica and other harmful dusts and contaminants is an ongoing goal in the U.S. mining industry. One area of known worker exposure is from contaminated work clothes. A U.S. Bureau of Mines report documented a number of cases where a tenfold increase in a worker's dust exposure was measured from contaminated work clothes. In these cases, the dust emitted from clothing caused the worker's dust exposure to exceed the permissible exposure limit in less than 2 hours. The most effective way to eliminate this dust source is to have workers clean or change their work clothes. There are two federal regulations that impact the clothes-cleaning process. The first states that at no time shall compressed air be directed toward a person, but that when compressed air is used, then all necessary precautions shall be taken to protect persons from injury. The second regulation states that compressed air should only be used for cleaning purposes when it is less than 30 psi and used along with personal protective equipment. For the mining industry, by default, the only approved method to perform clothes cleaning is to have workers vacuum their clothes using a HEPA filter system. This is very difficult and time-consuming and, in most instances, not very effective. Most workers would prefer to use a single compressed air hose to blow dust from their work clothes. However, not only is this method prohibited by law, it usually creates a significant dust cloud in the work environment and contaminates coworkers.
