This paper, one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining at various mica mines in the United States, describes the methods now in use in the principal mica mines of the Southern Appalachian States. Those papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

The Buckeye manganese deposits are in Stanislaus County, Calif., about 33 miles south of Tracy. From 1917 to 1919 the deposits produced 13,370 tons of ore reported to average 46 percent manganese and 14 percent silica. The deposits are confined to two areas of' development, known as the north mine workings and the south mine workings, about 700 feet apart horizontally. Mineralization occurs chiefly as rhodochrosite and psilomelane interbedded in cherts of the Franciscan formation. As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a development project was started November 25, 1940, and completed June 27, 1941. The Federal Geological Survey cooperated by mapping the topography and geology and logging the drill cores. The program included road and. trail building, trenching, underground excavation, diamond drilling, and sampling. The following pages mention the location, brief the history, and note the physical .features of' the district. Mine workings are sketched, the deposit is described, and the plan of the project is noted. The work performed by the Bureau of Mines is explained in the concluding pages with a summary of the drill-hole logs.

This investigation was conducted to obtain data on optimum conditions for chloridizing metal sulfides . Salt- roasting galena at 450° C for 8 hours chloridized 75 percent of the lead ; in an equal time of treatment at 750° C , the process chloridized 42 percent of the zinc in sphalerite . Hydrogen chloride at 500° C completely chloridized galena in 15 minutes , and at 600° C converted all of the zinc in sphalerite to the chloride in 4 hours .

Samples of clays , shales , and argillites from 21 locations were subjected to preliminary bench- scale tests for bloating properties , and several samples were tested for ceramic properties . Samples showing favorable bloating properties were further tested in a pilot - plant - scale rotary kiln . Physical characteristics and concrete -making properties of the bloated products were determined . The Decorah shale from one area made a suitable material for a lightweight aggregate ; however , the limestone layers in the formation must be eliminated or the resulting activated lime must be controlled by quenching .

This Bureau of Mines report presents results from experimental studies on wood crib fires in an intermediate-scale fire tunnel. Gas concentrations, smoke particle characteristics, heat release rates, and ventilation rates were determined. These measurements form a data base for wood, which can be used with previous analyses for coal and future studies of other mine combustibles, to comprehend the potential hazards of these materials in underground mine fires. A knowledge of the combustion products emitted from these materials will benefit fire detection and control. Results show the changes in burning rate and heat release rate produced by different crib configurations and ventilation rates. Also included are the effects that the burning rate has on smoke characteristics and gas production.

The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars arc characteristically of the 'fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public, and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes arc added to the face equipment machinery for which they arty required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in "Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brakes" by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. I. Judy (our consultant), etc:

The petroleum industry has recently shown sucks great interest in the evaporation of crude oil and of gasoline, and in the prevention of evaporation losses that almost daily there is being developed and placed on the market equipment designed especially to reduce these losses. Among the recent developments is a new type of tank roof known as the "floating roof," which practically eliminates the vapor space over the surface of the oil, thus removing one of the chief causes of evaporation. There are at the present writing at least two types of floating roofs which, while similar in fundamental principle, differ mainly in the method of making contact with the inside shell of the tank. One type of floating roof is known as a floating tank deck, and has on its circumference flexible metal baskets containing gravel that .rest against the inside shell of the tank. In the other type of floating roof contact with the tank shell is made by the use of movable buffers or shoes. These are attached to the outer ring of the roof and are pressed against the tank shell by means of springs.

The results obtained in a study of the stress conditions existing in a drill bit-point area and in the underlying rock, when the bit was in full but nonpenetrative contact with the rock, are presented. This investigation by the Bureau of Mines was the preliminary exploratory phase of a long-range program of research on rock drilling to establish criteria for the maximum economically feasible rate of rock penetration. The photoelastic technique of experimental stress analysis was the principal method used to obtain the data. Transparent models and transmitted light were employed to investigate patterns in drill-bit models and isotropic materials under the bit when subjected to a concentrated static load. Comparative stress data for anisotropic rock were obtained by the reflective photoelastic technique. Brittle lacquer and an extensometer were used obtain supplementary information wherever substantiating data were desired to check photoelastic results. The zone of maximum shear occurs along an arc near the contact face of the bit. The stress distribution pattern in an isotropic model rock near the area contacted by the bit was nearly a mirror image of that exhibited within a similar areal zone of the bit. The stress pattern in granodiorite specimens was similar, though not symmetric, to the pattern in the isotropic model rock. The asymmetry of the stress pattern in the granodiorite was attributed to the anisotropic characteristics of the constituent minerals of various sizes.

The fundamental properties of dielectric separation were studied to provide insight into the design and operating characteristics of a dielectric separator. Force equations on mineral particles were derived and evaluated experimentally. Responses to variations in the electrical voltage and frequency, feed rate, particle size, dielectric fluid, and dielectric constant were tested theoretically and experimentally, using a 5-cm-diam dielectric separator. High-dielectric mineral recovery was proportional to the calculated effective dielectric force volume (EDFV) that surrounded each drum-electrode wire. Electrode spacing was the most sensitive design parameter; spacing of less than 0.4 cm was required for a good separation. Dielectric separation was effective for separating minerals with dielectric constants that differed by approximately 2 or more.

[Apparent progress in fuel economy at petroleum refineries, as measured by the average amount of .seat units required to refine a barrel of crude oil, received a set-back in 1935, when the average rose to 562,00 B. t. u., compared with 562,000 B.t.u. in 1937 (see fig. l). The primary factor in the rise in average heat requirement's per barrel of crude oil refined in 1938 wan the decline in total runs to Invariably the average requirement increases when crude ins to stills decline, and vice versa. In other words, annual gains in fuel efficiency at refineries arc masked by the degree to which the capacity is utilized. The rapid depletion of known high-grade ore deposits of the Tri-State district and the recognized need for development of additional reserves, together with increased interest in open-pit mining of low-grade zinc-lead ores led to Bureau of Mines examination of several abandoned mining areas for possible deposits adapted to strip mining. Examination of the North Empire tract in Cherokee County, suggested that mineralized zones contiguous to previously mined 2e deposits presented probabilities of meeting the requirements for an open-pit mine - hence the tract was selected for further investigation by churn drilling. The zinc-lead deposit on the property is in a sink-hole structure that has been subjected to intense deformation and silicification. Numerous shafts, mine dumps, and surface caves are evidences of exploitation of an extensive area. The reported active mining period was 1895 to 1905. No production records are available, but it is generally stated locally that the value of the mill products exceeded $2,000,000 which represents considerable production, considering the low metal prices of that epoch.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of research to develop a process for recovering additional beryllium from a commercial mill waste product, fluoferrate leach residue. Forty-five percent of the total beryllium in the leach residue was recovered in a beryllia product assaying over 98 pct Be0 by a process comprising (1) leaching with 1 N sulfuric acid, (2) adjusting the acidity of the leach liquor to pH 2, (3) extracting the beryllium with di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (EHPA), (4) stripping the loaded extract with sodium hydroxide solution, (5) boiling the sodium beryllate strip solution to precipitate beryllium hydroxide, and (6) calcining the beryllium hydroxide. Calculated reagent requirements per pound of Be° recovered by a proposed flowsheet were 28.1 lb sulfuric acid, 0.04 lb flocculent, 0.15 lb EHPA, 0.06 lb isodecanol (IDA), 0.22 gal kerosine, and 6.3 lb sodium hydroxide.

This report describes investigations by the Bureau of Mines designed to establish the noise level and spectrum of various types of pneumatic rock drills and to furnish information that would be useful in conducting sound measurements in mining environments and in reducing the noise generated in pneumatic drilling. These investigations show that (1) the noise generated by the drills in the frequencies below 100 cps is caused by the impact of the piston and drill steel, in the frequency range between 100 and 2,000 cps by the exhausting of air from the ports, and in the frequencies above 2,000 cps by the resonant frequencies of steel drill parts and of drill steel; (2) satisfactory instruments and instrumentation systems are available for field and laboratory measurements; (3) reliable sound measurements can be made in mining environments; and (4) devices can be developed that will abate the noise.

This paper presents one of a series of digests of foreign mining legisla- tion and court, decisions which is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the right of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the laws of Latin America has been prepared from the best available information in Washington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consular officers, to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. Individual abstracts of the laws of each of the countries herein discussed have been prepared and published separately. This general summary is presented for the use of mining engineers and investors whose interests extend over the borders of a single country. It is also designed to bring out certain general principles of mining law and, so far as feasible, to indicate the trend of mining legislation in South and Central America. In order to gain perspective, the details of legislation are not com- pletely covered in this paper, but an effort has been made to bring out essential differences as well as points of similarity in the laws of the various countries. The course of legislation is first traced chronologically and the points discussed are then arranged in tables in somerhat greater detail. .Si. With a very few exceptions the existing mining legislation of Spanish America is a development, of the Spanish "Law Decree of Bases" (more briefly referr- ed to as the "Decree-Bases") of 1868. This in turn was influenced, particularly in its classification of minerals, by the French law of April 21, 1810.

The Bureau of Mines designed, fabricated, and is using an in-seam tester (1ST) for in situ determination of coal cutting forces. This re-port describes the results of field tests conducted in the Pocahontas No. 3 and Upper Freeport seams to obtain peak and mean cutting forces during coal cutting with several bit geometries, including radial and point attack bits currently used on drum-type machines. Comparisons were also made between new and worn bits, and using data obtained from a Bureau-modified chisel bit. The test results show that longwall plough cutting (horizontal cuts) in bony coal bands (shale) requires >3 times the cutting force for the same cuts in a vertical direction. When no bony coal is present, the cutting forces required to make horizontal and vertical cuts are equal. Worn bits require 4 to 5 times more cutting and normal force than new or undamaged bits. Normal force increased drastically for the worn chisel bit. Peak force encountered in making independent cuts was found to be ~3 times higher than that required to make interactive cuts using a spacing-to-depth-of-cut ratio of 2. Both rake and clearance angles were found to have a significant effect on normal and cutting force.

One of the common methods of increasing recovery of oil from partly depleted oil sands is to inject natural gas, air, or air-gas mixtures into the sand, thereby supplying energy to move oil. into the well bore. Where natural gas is not available, air or an air-gas mixture is used as the repressuring medium. Air-gas mixtures are obtained from the casingheads of oil-producing wells in the areas repressured with air or air-gas mixtures and consist usually of varying amounts of the hydrocarbon gases, nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. Laboratory experiments have been conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effect of air on crude oils.4/ In these experiments the crude oils were oxidized by the air, and the degree of oxidation depended not only upon the chemical composition of the crude oil but also upon the duration and method of contact between the oil and air, the temperature of the fluids and the concentration of the oxygen. A revolutionary development in blasting materials has occurred in recent years. Ammonium nitrate, sensitized by the addition of a small percentage of No. (class) 2 diesel fuel or other suitable petroleum product, has been adopted as a low-cost, efficient blasting agent2 in a wide variety of mining, quarrying, and heavy construction operations. Moreover, the ready availability of the component supplies throughout the Nation, together with the ease of formulating them into effective blasting agents, has made it possible for the blaster himself to prepare the mixes at the site of use. Recently, most established explosives manufacturers have begun supplying premixed AN-FO (ammonium nitrate-fuel oil) or a comparable product to various mining operations. However, many individuals and small business establishments are marketing premixed products prepared in facilities that are often poorly constructed and poorly located. Although these blasting agents have partly or wholly displaced explosives such as dynamites in many applications, there are some blasting operations in which the fuel-sensitized ammonium nitrate agents do not appear to be well adapted. As long as the hazards they present are clearly understood and respected, ammonium nitrate-based blasting agents have important safety characteristics when prepared under competent factory control or field-mixed under equivalent close control. This publication attempts to summarize the knowledge of those hazards and to incorporate practical ways to cope with them.

Lower Sunnyside seam coal from Utah was blended with various proportions of char and high-temperature coke to improve the quality of the coke obtained from carbonizing this coal. The Hanson 5-pound carbonizer was used as a "screening test" for the larger scale Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) tests, which were correlated with industrial production. Eighteen carbonization tests were made in the BM-AGA 13-inch retort, with a coal charge of about 90 pounds; the cokes were evaluated by the standard ASTM tumbler test. Carbonization of blends containing char and coke breeze yielded less fissured and blockier cokes of significantly higher ASTM I-inch tumbler indices as compared with the value for the straight Sunnyside coal. It was found that the simultaneous addition of char and coke breeze yielded stronger cokes than that obtained by the addition of either one of these additives. Addition of a small proportion of Pocahontas No. 3 or Sewell coal to an optimum blend improved the resulting coke strength further.
