The aim of the present study was to determine the thermal oxidative behavior of materials used in coal mines, with emphasis on the type and relative concentration of the products, in particular the toxic species formed. To supplement this work and to gain understanding as to the type of products possibly formed and also to assess the limitations and advantages of the various analytical methods used a literature survey of the past investigations performed on the compositions of direct interest to the subject program was conducted. The compositions thus covered were cellulose, polyvinyl chloride, neoprene, urethanes, polyamides, polyesters, polyethylene, epoxy, phenoxy, urea-formaldehyde and melamine formaldehyde resins. The results of this review are compiled in the Appendix. The experimental work consisted of thermal oxidative degradation of 36 materials and 4 composites using a stagnation burner apparatus developed in these laboratories which affords a dynamic system approximating somewhat the conditions encountered in underground coal mines. This technique as employed during this program gave only the relative product concentration at specific periods of the decomposition process, The advantage of this approach is that in this manner screening of materials can be accomplished in conjunction with some assessment of the decomposition rate as influenced by temperature and material composition. Limited static tests were performed using a sealed tube method. The materials studied were grouped according to their compositions. The following were the main groups: (a) polyvinyl chloride-containing materials, (b) neoprene compositions, (c) rigid foams (urethanes, isocyanates), (d) miscellaneous materials (including jute, fiberglass, polyethylene and some articles of unknown composition), (e) coal and fluids (phosphate esters, organic esters, oil-water emulsions), and finally (J) composites. The latter comprised a mixture of a phosphate ester fluid with (a) coal, (b) a representative polyvinyl chloride sample, and (c) a neoprene type composition.

Although viscosity is known to be important in processing and handling finely ground urea, its effect has never been fully quantified. This report describes the methods used and the results obtained in the initial phases of a broad investigation of the influence of viscosity of water suspensions of minerals in flotation, thickening, filtering, and other mineral-dressing unit operations. Several types of vis-cosimeters were tested before reliable and reproducible results could be obtained on mineral suspensions. After the viscosimeter used in the research was calibrated and standardized, tests were made on six pure minerals to study the relationship of pulp density, particle size, crystallinity, and cleavage on viscosity. An orifice-type viscosimeter equipped with a mechanical stirrer gave as good results as other types and was more flexible, faster, and simpler to operate. The orifice-type viscosimeter, when calibrated and standardized with glycerin and water mixtures, proved satisfactory over a wide range of viscosities. The accuracy and reproducibility were reasonably constant between 1 centipoise and 200 centipoises, the anticipated range in common mineral-dressing unit operations.

Pressure-drop measurements through beds of granular iron, lathe turnings, steel wool, and parallel-plate assemblies were made at linear velocity and gas-density ranges expected in the Fischer-Tropsch hot gas recycle process.4/ Equations relating pressure drop, linear velocity, gas density, and bed porosity were derived. The results indicate that the exothermic heat of reaction can be removed at a lower cost by using catalyst beds with high porosity. INTRODUCTION The Fischer-Tropsch hot-gas-recycle process requires a catalyst offering low resistance to gas flow as one condition to economic feasibility. Conventional granular or spherical catalysts used during early development of the process in Germany did not meet this requirement. Large pressure drops across these beds made the cost of recirculating the gas excessive. The Federal Bureau of Mines is investigating the process by using novel and unusual catalysts that offer little resistance to gas flow. Pressure-drop measurements across these types of catalyst beds are discussed in this report.

This paper, which describes mining practices at a mine in the Cave- in-Rock, Illinois, fluorspar district, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. Ore deposits in the southern Illinois-western Kentucky fluorspar dis- trict are of two general types (1) the flat-bedded, lenticular replacement and (2) the relatively narrow, rather steeply dipping fault or fissure filling. This paper describes production methods used and results obtained in mining one of the bedded lenticular ore bodies that are prevalent in the northeast portion of the district near Cave-in-Rock.

To protective devices, the Bureau of Mines has established five schedules of minimum performance requirements for the approval of respirators. The current revisions of these schedules include 13D for self-contained breathing apparatus, 14F for gas masks, 19B and the amendments to 19B for supplied- air respirators, 21B for dust, fume, and mist respirators, and 23B for chemical cartridge respirators. Copies of these schedules may be obtained from the Bureau of Mines, Publications Distribution Section, 4800 Forbes Avenue, Pitts- burgh, Pa., 15213. Approval tests on respirators are performed only at the request of the manufacturer of the respirator and at his expense. If the device meets the approval requirements, a certificate of approval is granted on the complete respirator. This certificate states that as long as the respirator is manufactured as originally approved, or in accordance with any changes covered by an exten- sion of the original approval, the manufacturer may advertise and sell his respirator as being approved by the Bureau of Mines. Many industries and regulatory agencies require that respirators approved by the Bureau of Mines be used where respiratory protection is needed. The Bureau of Mines, how- ever, has no regulatory power over the use of the respirators that it approves. It acts as an impartial testing agency to insure the availability of suitable and safe respirators. At frequent intervals, the Bureau of Mines purchases approved respirators and replacement parts on the open market. These are examined for conformity to the approved status, and are checked to insure that the manufacturer's pro- duction facilities are maintaining a satisfactory quality control.

"Researchers at The Pennsylvania State University are engaged in a project to understand the mechanics of respirable size fragment formation in coal. The project is based on the premise that a thorough understanding of the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation may lead to techniques for reduction and better control of coal dust problems in mines. Presently, it is believed that the mode of fracture propagation which can range from pure tensile to pure shear or any mixed mode in between and the loading or displacement rate can influence the amount of respirable size fragments that are generated on new fracture surfaces during the fracture propagation process The essence of any coal cutting process is one of mixed mode fracture propagation. To study the crack propagation process, a unique mixed mode testing rig was designed and fabricated. This rig is capable of applying loads to a prenotched test specimen that range from pure Mode I (tensile mode) to nearly pure Mode II (shear mode) or many mixed mode loading combinations. It is also possible to apply different loading or displacement rates to the test specimen. With this rig, it is possible to create new fracture surfaces via the different fracture modes and under various loading conditions.These new fracture surfaces are examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to characterize the amount of structural damage and respirable size fragment formation that occurs during the fracture process. Initial observations suggest that the amount of fine fragment formation and the new fracture surface appearance is related to the fracture initiation conditions, particularly the fracture mode and the loading rate. Mode II loading and higher loading rates seem to generate more structural damage and respirable size fragment formation that Mode 1 loading at slower rates.With the mixed mode test rig, the mechanics of fracture initiation for a single crack can be controlled to better understand its influence on respirable size fragment formation. Such understanding may lead to methods which characterize the tendency of specific coal seams to produce undesirable fine fragments during the fracture process, or it may lead to rational recommendations and design guidelines or coal mining machines which inherently produce less dust.IntroductionAs part of a larger effort to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung) in coal miners, researchers at The Pennsylvania State University are engaged in a project to understand the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal. This project is part of a com¬prehensive research effort within the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust which is jointly administered by The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University.The principal source of the coal dust in underground mining is the cutting operation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and various European research organizations have conducted investigations into the mechanics of coal cutting for many years. These studies of airborne respirable dust (ARD) formation have concentrated on empirical studies of the various cutting parameters and their effect on ARD for¬mation. The parameters study include depth of cut, cutting speed and bit spacing.(1,2) Other studies investigated the effect of symmetric and asymmetric bit wear and various bit geometries and designs (3-5) Roepke(6) summarized the principals of proper coal cutting to minimize dust formation by recommending to ""cut at maximum depth (maximum advance rate) at all times, at minimum RPM, with the fewest possible bits, having the lowest possible included tip angle."" Footnote references are given to the publications so that further details on the work may be obtained. Bureau of Mines research on the mining, preparation, and utilization of coal is directed toward developing and encouraging safer and more efficient mining practices and preparing and utilizing coals to the best advantage.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coals in Dickenson County, Va. It is one in a series planned to determine which coals are suitable for the production of metallurgical coke either as mined or after beneficiation. Nearly 4 million tons of coal was produced in Dickenson County in 1955, of which approximately 2.7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in 5 cleaning plants. The Federal Geological Survey has estimated that nearly 1,300 million tons of measured and indicated coal reserves remained in the county as of January 1, 1951.

The paper describing the raining operations at the Mt. Hope mine, Mt. Lope, N. J., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs of various mining operations in the United States. Mt. Hope mine produces magnetite ore. It is situated in the general northern part of the State of New Jersey. The towns of Rockaway, Wharton, and Dover lie within a radius of 4 miles from the mine. Dover is 40 miles from New York City.

"SUMMARYThe J. D. Price property is in Crittenden County, Ky., about 5-1/2 miles west of Marion. The Levias-Crittenden Springs fault system traverses the property. Mines on 3 miles of the same fault system immediately northeast have produced about 250,000 tons of fluorspar ore. The Keystone property, adjacent on the northeast, has produced about 150,000 tons of ore. 3/About 1934, lessees, sank a shaft upon the Price property to a depth of 111.5 feet and crosscut from the bottom of the shaft to the principal fault. No ore was found. Later, in 1942-43, they explored the same fault by core-drilling, but this project also was unsuccessful in finding ore.The author visited the property in September 1944, and subsequently the Bureau further explored the property by core-drilling three holes. No ore was found.ACKNOWLEGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Bureau of Mines recently initiated a study of geologic features that contribute to roof instability in western U.S. underground coal mines. The purpose of the study is to provide information for use in ground control planning and safety hazard reduction in that region, where mining activity has been increasing. Hazardous geologic conditions were surveyed in selected underground coal mines in Utah and Colorado, and both depositional and structural features were identified as potential ground hazards. Although the conditions found do not differ in kind from hazardous geologic conditions in the Eastern United States, they do differ in intensity of occurrence and relative importance. Three depositional features dominate where unstable roof occurs in western underground coal mines: paleochannel deposits, crevasse splay deposits, and flood basin deposits. Three structural features identified as hazardous, but not so widespread or common as the depositional hazards, are faulting, jointing, and igneous intrusions. This survey establishes a foundation for future studies aimed at reducing and preventing ground control accidents in western coal mines.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) awarded? a contract to Foster-Miller, Inc. to develop guidelines for designing, constructing, stocking, and maintaining rescue chambers in underground mines. This report develops information and recommendations which could be used by a mine operator who desired to install a rescue chamber. Volume I covers the following major areas: atmospheric life support, configuration and construction, chamber location, power and lighting, equipment and supplies, communications, and psychological aspects and training. Volume II contains the following appendices: History of Barricading, Chamber Pressuriztion Considerations, Diffusional Infiltration of Gas, Compressed Air Storage, Location Examples, and Psychological Aspects.

For the past several years, the Bureau of Mines has conducted laboratory and continuous process development work on weathered mica pegmatites and micaceous schist ores to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. The research has resulted in the development of two processes for flotadon of mica: an acid cationic method for recovery of coarse mica, and an alkaline anionic-cationic method for recovery of fine mica. The research indicated that the two processes may be effectively utilized separately or in combination for flotation of mica from weathered pegmatites and micaceous schists. Concentrates containing over 98 percent mica, with recoveries ranging from 77 to 92 percent, were obtained from the pegmatite ores. The micaceous schist ores yielded concentrates containing 95 to 98 percent mica, with recoveries ranging from 70 to 83 percent. Part 1 of this report summarizes the process development work and demonstrates the feasibility of producing commercial- grade mica concentrates. The report also includes details of commercial beneficiation and grinding of .mica.

Soapstone commonly is associated with talc , and reports on either commodity usually contain a discussion of the other . From a geological or mineralogical standpoint the combination is justifiable , for soapstone essentially is impure talc . Commercially , however , the relation between them is remote . About 95 per cent of all talc sold in the United States is in ground form, whereas practically all soapstone is sold as furnace blocks or as fabricated structural slabs for many and diverse applications .

The material requirements of carbide cutting tools for machining steel and cast iron are dependent on WC bonded with Co, with additions of TaCand TiC. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to devise substi-tute materials, based on Ni-alloy-bonded TiC, for C-5-grade cutting tool applications. This substitution would result in less dependence on foreign sources for Co, Ta, and W, and use of lower cost materials. In this preliminary study, the Bureau investigated the effects of composition and processing variables on the transverse rupture strength and hardness of Ni-alloy-bonded TiC to identify compositions that exhibit promising mechanical properties. Further systematic modification of these compositions by soild-solution strengthening additions would subsequently be evaluated to obtain cutting tool materials with requisite properties and performance for C-5 applications. Compositions for evaluation were prepared by a powder metallurgy method of cold-pressing and liquid-phase sintering. Complementary analysis of compositions included chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectro-scopy, and density measurements. Based on results of this investigation, promising compositions were determined to be 59.37TiC-25Ni-5Mo-lO.63Mo2C, 59.68TiC-25Ni-3.33Mo-1.77Mo2C-6.67W-3.55WC, and 59.35TiC-25Ni-l.67Mo-3.54Mo2C-3.33W-7.1WC.

An economic evaluation of the Bureau of Mines process for the separation of raw urban refuse into its metal, mineral, and energy components is presented. The process recovers ferrous metal, mixed nonferrous metals, aluminum, mixed-color glass cullet, and refuse-derived fuel products from raw refuse. Data for this evaluation were obtained from selected runs at the Bureau's pilot plant in Edmonston, Md. A cost estimate was prepared for a plant capable of processing 1,000 tons per day of raw urban refuse operating two shifts, 6 days per week. The fixed capital cost, based on second quarter 1976 equipment costs, is approximately $14.5 million excluding land and shipping containers. The estimated operating cost is approximately $8 per ton of refuse processed. This does not include credit for the products, transportation of the products, a tipping fee, or a dumping fee for wastes produced. No finance charges or taxes are included in the operating costs.

A lignite from Milam County, Tex., has been oxidized by air at temperatures from about 27° to 300° C. for varying lengths of time. The oxidized coal was carbonized at 500° C. in a laboratory assay unit, and the products of carbonization were measured and analyzed. The data presented suggest that, as lignite is progressively oxidized, tar yields are decreased and gas yields are increased in a ratio approximating 1:1. It is surmised that tar-yielding structures in the nonoxidized coal produce gas, principally, when the coal is oxidized. Char-yielding structures of the nonoxidized coal give rise to additional water of decomposition after oxidation and pyrolysis. As lignite is subjected to greater oxidation, the gaseous product evolved on pyrolysis becomes almost entirely carbon dioxide. Tar yields decrease with an increased degree of oxidation, so that the reduction in tar yield may be used as a qualitative measure of oxidation. Pilot-plant drying and carbonization, where air is used as the transport gas and where some air is included in the drying and carbonizing gases, induces some oxidation of the coal particle. The short residence time in a fluidized system with reference to the oxidation environment limits the oxidation.

A numerical proceeding of corrections with respect to topography is worked out for places near the station and a graphical one for the remote parts of the terrain. The description is clear and very detailed. The numerical proceeding is very similar to that of the Eötvös and Schweydar methods which are in use already. In both methods the levelling is accomplished in certain circles and fixed azimuths around the station. While, in using the Eötvös method, the height differences are directly inserted into the final formulas with regard to the foot of the instrument and in case of accurate formulas derived by Schweydar the height differences are calculated with respect to the center of gravity of the attachment, Numerov introduces functions A and B, the heights, of the terrain and of the center of gravity, which are to be inserted into the formulas.
